"As black America approaches the 21st century, our capacity or our failure to build a solid bridge . . . of works will determine whether millions of young blacks already with us or yet unborn will cross over into the new century, or fall into the abyss."
Another name you almost certainly didn't know: M. (Moses) Carl Holman, civil rights activist, writer, and poet. Born in 1919 St. Louis, Holman showed an early gift for writing, and at the age of 19 won a scriptwriting award from a popular syndicated radio program. He graduated magna cum laude from Lincoln University and went on to acquire Master's degrees from the University of Chicago and from Yale. While at Yale he published his first collection of poems, and began regularly writing articles for various newspapers and magazines on income inequity, urban poverty, literacy, and other issues important to Black Americans. In 1962 he taught English at Clark College in Atlanta, giving him a front-row seat to key events in the earliest days of the civil rights movement. As some of his students participated in sit-ins and the Freedom Rides, he found himself appointed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, of which he eventually became deputy director in 1966.
In 1968 Ebony magazine named Holman as one of the 100 Most Influential Black Americans. That same year Holman published what is probably his best-known work: The Baptizin', a play which won first prize in the National Community Theater Festival. In addition to multiple collections of poems, Holman also published a definitive overview of the civil rights movement in the U.S., from 1965 to 1975.
Perhaps most significantly, in 1971 Holman was named Vice President of the National Urban Coalition. This organization had re-formed in 1967 in the wake of the so-called "long, hot summer" of racial strife and injustices. During this time Holman's singular talent for delivering quiet and polite, but still powerful, speeches came to the fore and he jumpstarted a great many local housing, education, job training, and economic development programs aimed at disadvantaged Black and Hispanic communities.
In his later years Holman forcefully addressed the issue of "dual literacy" for Black children --emphasizing that such students not only needed to be well-versed not only in the fundamentals such as reading, writing, and public speaking; but also in math, science, and technology. His 1988 obituary notes that Holman "had an uncanny ability to form a coalition out of the most diverse elements, and it was often said that the key to his ability to do this was the fact that he never appeared to have an agenda for himself."
(Teachers: Need some resources to engage your students this Black History Month? I'll send you a pile of these trading cards, no cost, no obligation. Just give me a mailing address and let me know how many students in your class. No strings attached, no censorship, no secret-relaying-of-names to Abbott or DeSantis or HuckaSanders.)

I've been so excited for this book, and now it's here, just in time for Thanksgiving! At last, a story of Thanksgiving written by a member of the Wampanoag people, telling real history in a way that is accessible to little ones. This book tells the often-fictionalized tale from a Native perspective, creating the character of Weeâchumun (corn) to tell the story, along with Nokomis (grandmother), who unfolds the events to her grandchildren. It shows the generosity and caring of the Wampanoag people, and the mixed feelings of welcoming and wariness they felt for the people who needed help, but did not listen to the land. It tells the accurate account of the "first Thanksgiving," where settlers prepared a feast and fired muskets into the air, which alerted the Wampanoag (they didn't invite them to the feast). It notes how for settlers, the day is called Thanksgiving, but for many native people, it is a day of mourning. Yet this book is not somber, but thoughtful, a prelude to learning more (the back matter is particularly helpful). I strongly recommend this to all teachers, parents, and anyone wanting to show kids a "true" Thanksgiving story. #socialstudies #keepunumuk #thanksgiving #kindergarten #wampanoag #firstnationspeople #firstpeople #nativeamericans #americanindian #thanksgiving2022 #americanindianheritagemonth #nativeamerican #nativeamericanheritagemonth #teachinghardhistory #teacherlibrarian #teachthetruth #teachtruth #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #librariansfollowlibrarians #librariansofinstagram #schoollibrarian #librarian #historyforkids #history #childrensbooks #ownvoices https://www.instagram.com/p/CkrjQryMd-q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

White people - we have a duty to speak the hell up whenever someone says something hateful around us. It is the LEAST we can do to be uncomfortable for a few moments if it shows fellow white folks that their racism will not be tolerated. Calls for “unity” are a slap in the face. This isn’t a disagreement - this is a malevolent, violent ideology that those in power are doing nothing to actually dismantle. So we have to do it day to day. Arm yourself with facts, and listen to Black/Brown/Indigenous people and follow their lead. We need to take some responsibility for quashing the hate that silence in the face of ignorance allows to flourish. #Repost @zinneducationproject with @make_repost ・・・ It’s not “acting alone” when media and politicians support and feed into white supremacist ideology. #TeachTruth #zinneducationproject #antiracisteducation #antiracist #whitesupremacy #whiteterrorism #fascism #criticalracetheory #silenceisviolence #accomplicesnotallies #dismantlewhitesupremacy #hatecrimes #gunculture #guns #gunlaws https://www.instagram.com/p/Cdn5YSgusI9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

For the past three summers, teachers rallied across the country to speak out against anti-history education bills and to make public their pledge to teach the truth. The teacher-led rallies received national media attention, providing a valuable counter narrative to the oversized coverage of the well-funded anti-CRT movement. Once again, we invite educators, students, parents, and community members to rally across the country and pledge to #TeachTruth and defend LGBTQ+ rights on June 8, 2024. The situation is urgent. Lawmakers in at least 44 states have introduced legislation or pursued other measures that attempt to require educators to lie to students about the role of racism, sexism, heterosexism, transphobia, and other forms of oppression throughout U.S. history. These laws and restrictions have been imposed in at least 18 states. The Right has declared war on teaching the truth about structural racism and sexism and on LGBTQ+ youth.
Although bills and budget resolutions are being proposed (and in some cases passed) in specific states, the threat to teaching — and the need for solidarity — is everywhere. We invite people to participate from all over the United States. You can plan a virtual event or gathering at a bookstore, library, farmers’ market, historic marker, or other public location. From our freedom to vote, to our children’s freedom to learn, to everyone’s freedom from gun violence, certain politicians want to overturn the will of the people and block the policies we need for our students, families, and communities to thrive. By coming together, we can rewrite the rules to ensure safe, affirming, and welcoming schools and the freedom to learn for our children — across race, place, and gender identities — no exceptions.

"The moment that I was questioned as a transgender woman raising a child I became a feminist."
Say hello to activist Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, 82 years old as of this writing and not about to ease up in the fight for trans rights. She faced many hurdles during her life --including homelessness and incarceration-- and it's these challenges that fuel her determination to this day. In 1969, Majors fought the police at Stonewall, right alongside Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson (see Lesson #94 in this series), and to this day expresses doubt that the promises of Stonewall have truly been kept --particularly in this cynical and opportunistic age of "corporate Pride." ("Who invited the motherf**kers from Home Depot?") In the 1970's, having herself been an inmate at New York's notorious Dannemora prison and Bellevue Hospital's so-called "queen tank," Griffin-Gracy provided direct services to trans women dealing with addiction and incarceration. In the 1980's she took it upon herself to care for people impacted by HIV/AIDS.
In 2005, Miss Major joined San Francisco-based Trans Gender Variant and Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP) as a staff organizer, and later as executive director, to lead the group's efforts advocating for incarcerated trans women. She has often spoken out against the prison system, which she says contributes to the incarceration of transgender individuals, particularly trans people of color and those with low incomes.
Now 82, Miss Major, known to many simply as "Mama," resides in Little Rock, Arkansas, where she continues to be a vocal activist. She founded and administers the House of GG, a retreat center for trans people and their families.

The 'Hidden Colors' DVD series is composed of 4 DVDs which encompass history of people of African descent, pre Western Civilization (before the new world) and today, as it relates culturally and socially. I grew up studying all of this as a 5 Percenter. But I recommend this project for all people of African descent. It's a great project for even Caucasians who desire to know the truth, in regards history, and the development of the world, races, and how we've gotten to this point, with racism, capitalism, and the social norms of today. . . . In writing my books, I'm very honest about how I feel about racism, historical truths, etc. Third Eye Awakening, I make no reservations in stating that Black people established civilization on this planet, and created all sciences. In Race & Politics, through this young man's life I lay out the realities he faces, and his awareness of what he faces. . . . The Black artist, whether the writer, singer, rapper, painter, etc has a duty to tell our story through our eyes, because the world is experiencing a false truth, which continues to be taught and lived out. All human life leads back to Black people. . . . #matrix #truth #whitesupremacy #awake #hiddencolors #teachtruth #seer #light #lightworkers #socialartists #blacklove #knowledgeofself #culture #racism #barackobama #socialreform #theroneshellmanmedia #theroneshellmanpromo
