Gongfu Tea Tools or  Cha Dao
Tumblr media
People who are much more familiar with western tea brewing methods, more then likely have never seen or heard of these special tools. And while these tools make look odd and are likely questioning what their uses are, when performing gongfu cha, especially in a group setting, they are an essential component to the ceremony.
Tumblr media
In your average set you will get one of each of the tools above, although sets can vary. Always included will be some type of decorative vase or holder to store all the tools together. Some of these tools can even be purchased separate, as depending on what kind of gongfu cha you are performing, not all tools are always necessary. An example would be if you were brewing gongfu cha only for yourself, you likely will only require a tea scoop and digger. But regardless, I do recommend having a full set of tools so you are always properly equipped should you decide to do a group gongfu cha.
The function of the tools above from left to right:
Tea Digger or Spatula - This tool is used to transfer tea leaves from your tea holder into your gaiwan or teapot, so as to be respectful of your guest and not handle the tea with your hands.
Tea Pin - This handy tool with a long narrow tip is used for clearing small fragments of tea from the small strainer holes on the inside of tea pots, or leaves that might be clogging the spout.
Tea Tweezers - This tool has multiple uses in a gongfu ceremony. They are used for removing hot teapot lids when refilling your pot. They can also be used to hold hot teapot lids in place when pouring hot water from your water pot into your brewing pot or gaiwan. They are most importantly used to handle the teacups. It is seen as proper etiquette not to handle your guests cups with your hands both when washing the cups and serving your guests.
Tea Scoop - Probably the most self explanatory tool of them all. This tool as you would suspect is used to scoop tea from your canister or jar into your presentation holder or directly into your brewing vessel.
Tea Funnel - This tool is primarily used when using a clay pot as your brewing vessel. The funnel perfectly inserts onto the top of the teapot in order to better transfer loose tea (especially large leaf teas) into your teapot.
These tool sets are super handy and come in a huge variety of designs, from simple and minimalist to extravagant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These tool sets are an essential part of the gongfu tea ceremony, and also add an extra element of beauty and grace to your set up. Choose a set that works best for your layout and price range, and one that comes with minimum a digger, tea scoop, and tweezers.

Tea Newbie Tip #4 - Buying Tea Accessories.
Tumblr media
Once you’ve picked your tool for steeping (infuser mug, tea makers, tea ball ect.) and you’ve picked your first round of teas to sample, the last thing you maybe tempted to purchase is accessories. Now I am primarily gonna touch upon the two most common accessories people often asked for during my time at Teavana. Tea scoops and sweetener options.
Tea Scoop
The tea scoop is a very handy tool for starting out in tea, as it will allow you to follow the brewing instructions on the package much more easily. Can you use a regular teaspoon? Yes, but it’s nice to have an extra, very inexpensive tool to help you get the perfect measurement of tea. Tea scoops generally measure out to a teaspoon, but they are also usually more rounded and deeper in order to better scoop large pieces of flowers, spice or fruit that might be in your tea.
They usually only run a couple bucks, and honestly in the end is well worth it.
Sweetener
Sweetener options vary store to store. At Teavana out primary sweetener was Belgian Rock Sugar, a type of sugar that added a nice sweetness to your cup without overpowering the flavor with a sugary taste. This can still be found in other tea shops like DavidsTea. However DavidsTea also carries natural sweeteners like agave and honey sticks.
These options are completely up to you. They are not something you absolutely need to start out, but might be something to revisit later after you have tasted a few teas. My recommendation though is taste your teas without sweeteners first. I find it allows you to get a better sense of the tea’s natural flavor. If later you feel a tea may need a dash of something to pull the flavor out a little more, then you do you.
Have a question about a tea accessory? Shout it out to me!
