i was complaining about Rush fans who call Neil a libertarian and their music apolitical and s was like well dear you literally have an encyclopedic knowledge of all of their biographies and you could probably transcribe every album backwards. most Rush fans are not on your level. and I was like oh… yeah

it’s interesting that the transition between 70s prog Rush and 80s/90s heavy pop-rock Rush also coincided with their transition between fantastical/ fictional lyrical themes and overtly political lyrical themes. Peter Gabriel did the same thing in the same period. a lot of “classic”-era Rush fans discount the 80s because the synths take up so much room in the mix and the song forms become standardized pop forms, but some of (to me) the most important and most interesting Rush lyrics are here in this era - red sector a, obviously, as well as stuff like territories, big money, the pass, and for all its hamfistedness we have to add nobody’s hero to this list. you can literally hear Neil’s transition from “the personal is nonpolitical and the political does not concern me” (farewell to kings and hemispheres) to “the political is personal and concerns us all” (red tide! the entirety of grace under pressure!).

a lot of rush’s music was overtly atheist in lyrical theme (and, obviously, Jewish in compositional theme) but clockwork angels really reads as an anti-christian work in totality. also you could pull both a gay and a trans reading out of the anarchist, among many other themes. anyway 69 days until Geddy’s memoir drops, time to go insane again

the "one thousand years i've been roaming these halls looking for that cruel cruel wizard to unslap my balls" post is about xanadu, but it tracks better to tom sawyer

@cheatghost tagged me to post my vecna song. this is one of those times where i realize that fully 200 of you started following me within the last six months so you might not be, like, ~aware~ of my previous psychosis, so this will basically function as an "introduction to the blogger" post!
youtube
i have every single rush song memorized, since i listened to every single rush album in order 3x over the span of two weeks a couple years ago including all released live albums; later that summer i did the same with about 54 bootlegs from various concerts between 1974 and 1996. there are things i love and admire about every rush album and almost every rush song, but the one i come back to time and time again as my favorite is the 1981 exit stage left montreal recording of Xanadu. this one's notable for it's slightly extended play length, slightly sped up tempo, neil utilizing every single piece of his kit, my personal favorite alex solo, and (for me, the best and rarest part) geddy on rhythm guitar! also the fact that the audience stays quiet for three solid minutes while they build the wall of sound before erupting at the kick-in to the main riff: soooo clutch. if i could go back in time and attend one single live performance it would be this.
but, for real, any rush song would work, haha.

Note
which is the rush video where they’re playing footsie onstage
Hi anon! my first thought was this video from the HYF tour:
youtube
but then i remembered this bootleg from rotterdam in '92, where alex sticks his leg between geddy's thighs and they get a bit carnal with it: (skip ahead to 17:00)
