Did Sibuna’s meddling cause more harm than good?
this got long so I'll put it under a cut
at times for sure. I think it was you that made the really interesting point before of how in season 2 they were actually working for the villain rather than the greater good, not to say that there was a way out of that. in season 1 especially, the adults didn't even know about all the cup pieces and where to find them and got most of them just by confiscating them. if there had been no sibuna meddling in season 1 there would have been no ankh pieces or chosen one at the ceremony anyway and nothing would've happened and no one would've gotten hurt, and joy would end up back at the school at the same time anyway. them getting involved risked all of their lives and scarred them for probably the same outcome.
in s2 it's different because it was meddle or die so like you can't really fault them but working with victor to do it instead of against him when realistically he was never getting the tears without nina anyway would've definitely saved them all a lot of pain stress and drama.
by s3, meddling is so ingrained in them that they just start doing it without even having a cause. there was nothing to get or save they were just so used to being in everyone's business and solving clues that they got themselves in trouble and put themselves in danger without even knowing about great evil. especially in regards later to the ceremony too, if they hadn't tried to perform it themselves or they had just had an actual conversation with victor and sweet about denby being an imposter without first invalidating themselves by being sneaky they could've prevented anything going wrong the whole season by just literally taking the bracelet anywhere else. like if they weren't so used to operating the way they did by meddling and scheming and constantly thinking that they were capable of not messing up the ancient egyptian stuff by falling into the same traps as the adults they could've prevented the whole events of the season by sending a package. and sure once the first sinner was captured they kinda had to finish it to get thing back to normal but it was their own egos and sneaking and constant breaking into the gatehouse that got them captured and made them targets.
in conclusion, yeah sometimes they could be their own worst enemies.

opinion on the victor, vera, rufus triangulation
ooo!! it's something I've always found interesting because when it comes the the adults there's always soo much implied but very little said. I've always assumed that vera was a con woman rufus hired specifically because their minds worked the same way, especially in regards to the art of war, and he knew victor well enough to know that if it had worked before it would work again. he obviously then instructed her on his specific interests too (the stuffed dog) but I very much think that their power dynamic that they fell into very much mirrored the one rufus and and victor had back when they were young.
also I don't know if I read it this way because it was a children's show that didn't wanna gross out kids with the adult's romantic lives but I never really saw victor as romantically interested in vera? like he definitely grew fond of her and wanted to protect her in a way that I think he was like with sarah, but vera was clearly trying to play him in a romantic way and I always found it interesting the way that victor always went back to the book and the tunnels when she tried to steer it away. whether or not I even believe he likes women that way is another thing but I do find it interesting that rufus chose to take down victor and use him by trying to get him to fall in love and the implications that this has about their own relationship and what went so wrong in the past.
I also always really liked the way the show used vera to represent greed in regards to monetary value in opposition to victor and rufus' respective drive towards immortality and power. I think it helped to make them higher stakes antagonists in comparison to a con woman who literally ran out when it all got too weird and mystical

sometimes you. ask an artist what their favorite part of their drawing is and they look at you with a big grin and they point to the tiniest little collection of lines or a brushstroke of orange next to a brushstroke of warm brown and. that’s what it all about really

at the end of episode 3 when joel and ellie are getting their supplies from bill and frank’s house, they find a box labeled “woman’s shirts.”
Tumblr media
tess is the only woman they’re friends with, which means this box was for her. so whenever they’d go to the clothing boutique, they’d find something for her and set it aside for when she visited next time.
i just - they loved tess. they cared about her. they thought about her even when she wasn’t around. they’d go to their little boutique and pick out clothes for her that she could take back home to the qz. “paying attention to things is how we show love.” “i leave you all of my weapons and equipment, use them to keep tess safe.”
and bill talked a bit more about tess in his letter but we don’t get to fully see it:
Tumblr media
“... and she decide you’re...”
also bill’s telling joel some wine pairing for food that he can share with tess, probably because one of bill’s love languages is cooking and he thinks joel should wine and dine her. how cute is that.

There’s something horrifyingly beautiful about Tess’s final moments. In the midst of the most dire chaos, as she waits for her death to come rushing past so she can blow it sky high and give cordyceps a big fuck you one last time, one of the infected stops. It looks at her, really looks. Her own mortality is personified in this infected. It’s death that’s looking at her, and it sees her. She looks her own death in the eye, and the suspense is so high as it approaches. But then, it doesn’t bite her throat out like we all expect it to.
It kisses her. What’s more, it kisses her gently. And I think it was a brilliant choice on the writers part, because it reminded me that the infected aren’t supposed to be evil. Sure, they’re scary as hell, but really, they’re just trying to survive. They’re connected to one another, they can feel each other from miles away. They seek out and want to be close to their own kind, just like the human survivors do. And when they do find each other, they kiss hello.
And after so long apart from a loved one, someone you know and trust with every instinct in your body, wouldn’t you want to kiss them too?
