Met Gala 2023: My Top 10 Women’s Looks

Here we go, this is my 10 women’s looks from the Met Gala 2023. Just to remind everyone that my opinions are mine alone, so feel free to agree or disagree with me as much as you like. However I will not tolerate any hate personally aimed at me if you disagree with me to the point where you want to start an argument. So let’s keep it respectful, clean (language wise) and more importantly let’s have some fun with this. Like I said, if you’re looking for an argument, then you’re following the wrong fashion blog. 

1. Kim Kardashian wearing Schiaparelli. This was the first look I saw this morning when I switched my phone on and I was blown away by it. I honestly didn’t know what to expect from Kim after her look from last year that got a lot of people talking. So I was pleasantly surprised to see her in an original design that shows off her body in all the right places and I love the draped pearls across her breasts (which are actually covered by a nude bra). Overall it was another Met Gala and another show stopping moment from Kim Kardashian.

2. Doja Cat wearing Oscar De La Renta In comparison to Jared Leto, Doja Cat understood the theme and took it to a whole other level that was both unexpected but not at the same time. I loved the use of prosthetics that complimented her simple yet stunning crystallised gown. Plus who doesn’t love a gown with a hood that has cat ears coming out the top that makes you look like a fashionista rather than someone attending a Halloween party?

3. Gigi Hadid wearing Givenchy I’m a sucker for a black gown that comes not just with a corset but a lot of tulle draped perfectly in all the right places as well. Gigi just looked stunning in this and considering a lot of attendee’s were also wearing either black or white, her Givenchy gown stood out when I was scrolling endlessly through all the looks earlier today. Simple, yet perfect sums up her look that I couldn't not add to my top 10 favourites. 4. Cardi B wearing Chenpeng Studio  I just loved the edgy yet alternative bridal look that also incorporated a masculine energy through the shirt and tie design blended with a corset that still made the overall gown look and feel feminine as well as beautiful. I’m not a fan of Cardi B as a rapper but like Kim Kardashian her Met Gala looks have never disappointed and I think this look was one of her best yet. 

5. Devon Aoki wearing Jeremy Scott Even though it’s yet another black & white gown, I just love the cartoon styled wings on the bust line of the corset. To me it made this gown stand out in the sea on monochrome that plagued the Met Gala 2023. Without that unique design, this gown would’ve gone unnoticed and it would’ve easily become another gown that was worn to the wrong event.

6. Florence Pugh in Valentino Florence has been killing it with her red carpet looks in the last 18 months or so, so it was no surprise that she would turn heads at the Met Gala. Whilst I'm not a fan of Valentino since Pierpaolo Piccioli took over as creative designer when Maria Grazi Chiuri left for Dior back in 2016, I can’t help but love this look. A simple white gown paired with a huge feather crown just looked stunning on Florence and it’s another reason why we love seeing show stopping numbers like this one.

7. Glenn Close wearing Erdem Moralıoğlu Similar to Florence Pugh’s look, Glenn Close just looked phenomenal in her Erdem Moralıoğlu design. Once again it was simple yet stunning and I loved the colour on her. It suited her to a tee and what better way to pair a simple gown that with a huge pale blue cape and the sparkliest jewellery of the night. It just goes to show that anyone of any age and can look amazing when dressed perfectly for the Met Gala.

8. Liu Wen wearing Tory Burch I just love how simple the gown is yet at the bottom it’s filled with white flowers that make the Tory Burch gown stand out amongst hundreds of Met Gala looks. The whole look screams red carpet but it’s also the ideal gown for a bride who doesn’t want to wear white to her wedding. Liu Wen just looked stunning in it and it’s why her look has made it into my top 10. 

9. Salma Hayek wearing Gucci I just love that it wasn’t black or white and the sharpness of the red looked phenomenal on Salma both in the PVC corset and the long tiered skirt. Plus the subtle draping of the pearls as straps just topped the look off altogether. Once again I loved everything about it and I can’t fault it at all. It was perfect.  10. Tems wearing Robert Wun This gown was a standout for all the right reasons. Tems looked absolutely gorgeous from head to toe and I love how all the feathers are perfectly placed on both the gown, the gloves and the headpiece from stepping over that line from haute couture into a costume. The shape of the gown also compliments her body to her a tee and I couldn’t think of anything better that Tem’s could’ve worn to the Met Gala.  So this concludes my top 10 looks from the Met Gala 2023. I have to say picking this list was hard because there were so many another amazing designs worn last night, however these 10 stand out to me the most. Hi, just resending a request idea I had for Florence where the reader has their tonsils removed and Florence is taking care of them, and also uses it as an opportunity to try some new Cooking with Flo recipes that the reader could eat while they are recovering. Soup, ice cream, etc. Florence is constantly reminding the reader not to speak, and gives them a white board to communicate, but the reader just uses it to draw little doodles for Florence. 🥰😅

Sweet Honeycomb

Pairing: Florence Pugh x Reader

Summary: Florence takes care of you after you’ve had your tonsils removed, even doing a little special cooking with Flo to make you smile.

AC: I decided to combine two requests that are similar, I hope that’s okay!! Xx 

Florence sat by your bedside as you began to wake up from the anesthesia, she smiled softly at your tired state before she buzzed for a nurse to come check on you. A few hours ago, you had your tonsils removed. An hour's surgery and a few hours rest in hospital before the nurses and doctors were confident to send you home. Flo was given a list of things that you could eat, things to avoid doing and a script for pain killers that were to be taken when necessary.

You slept in the car on the way home, your body unable to stay awake for any more than 30 minutes as the anesthesia began to wear off. Once home, Florence made sure you were comfy in bed before she got you bottled water and your pain killers within arm's reach. 

"Get some rest darling, I'm just going to be downstairs if you need anything" Florence smiled softly once more before placing a kiss on your forehead. 

"Th-"

"Uh, Uh darling. No talking, you heard the doctors" she interrupted you, "I got you a mini white board for this reason, I'll go get it" she added before leaving the room for a few moments. Florence placed the small whiteboard with colored markers next to you, "if you need to talk, just write it down, okay?" she looked at you as you nodded slightly before grabbing the whiteboard and the blue marker. 

"Thank you, baby" you wrote down then turned to it to face Florence. "You're welcome my love" she smiled, "get some rest".

While you caught up on some rest, Florence decided to try her luck and cook some of the foods you'd be able to eat. She knew how much you loved honeycomb ice cream but knew you wouldn't be able to eat it due to the honeycomb pieces throughout the ice cream, so, she decided to make her own homemade ice cream for you! Using honeycomb syrup for that flavor you loved so much. Of course, she was doing all this while keeping herself company with a special Cooking with Flo! She explained why and what she was making and even to her fan's surprise, she went live instead of using her stories for the popular trend. 

"While the ice cream is doing its thing, let's make some mashed sweet potato and pumpkin! I'm going to use the leftover pumpkin that we didn't use in the roast dinner we had a few nights ago and of course, there three beauties were grown in my own garden!" She held up the 3 sweet potatoes to the camera with a proud smile on her face before she started to peel the skin. 

You could hear Florence talking to herself downstairs and instantly knew she was doing another Cooking with Flo. You grabbed your trusty whiteboard and blue marker before getting out of bed and making your way downstairs. "Hi honey, you're awake!" Florence looked up and smiled at you, "I was just making you some mashed sweet potato and pumpkin for dinner" she added as she chopped up the pumpkin. 

"That sounds so good! Do we still have any yoghurt left?" your message on the whiteboard read. "We should, I'll get some for you" Florence smiled as she finished up with the pumpkin.

The rest of the afternoon you spent watching Florence cook the mashed sweet potato and the ice cream which you couldn't wait to dive into! "Awh! You gave Billie a little tutu!!" Flo coo'd at your little doodles of Billie. As much as Florence tried to keep her focus on cooking and giving her viewers some attention, it was hard for her to ignore you and how cute you looked sitting behind her phone unable to speak. Anytime you tried to speak she would hush you and point to the whiteboard as a reminder. 

"Baby, come say Hi to all these jammy, jammy tarts!" Flo looked up at you as she checked the ice cream. It wasn't often that fans would see the two of you together but always loved it when you were. You grabbed your whiteboard and wrote "Hello" with pretty little doodles before walking in front of the camera and smiling as you showed the viewers your little greeting. The comment section went crazy with so many comments causing you to chuckle. 

"Guys!! Don't make my baby laugh, they are meant to make as little noise as possible" Florence playfully shook her head at the camera as she came up behind you and wrapped her arms around your waist. "You're stealing the show darling" she added with a kiss on your cheek as you smiled softly and lent into her hold as you wrote on the whiteboard again. 

"I love you, thank you for looking after me honey!" you wrote. Florence smiled instantly, "I love you too my darling" she replied and kissed your cheek once again. The comments on the live were blowing up as Florence kept you in her arms and began to sway left to right slightly as you both read the comments you could. You draw more little drawings on the whiteboard which leads to Flo into a laughing fit. You did your best not to laugh but a few chuckles slipped out. 

After a few more moments Florence said her goodbyes to her viewers before shutting off the live stream and putting her phone in her pocket. "Are you hungry my love?" she asked you as she grabbed two bowls from the cupboard. You nodded with a pout before writing another message on your board. 

"How much longer do I have to be mute for?" 

Florence chuckled, "honey, it's hasn't even been a day. We'll see how you're feeling in the morning, but the doctor said you might sound a little different for at least 2-4 weeks" she replied while she served you a bowl of the mashed sweet potato and pumpkin that was mashed to zero lumps so it would be smooth enough for you to eat. You frowned at the news, "don't worry my love, it'll be fine. We'll worry about tomorrow when it comes but for now, let's go watch some TV and cuddle" she smiled as she handed you your bowl. 

Even though you hated that you couldn't speak right now, you were so thankful for Florence and how she was there for you. The food was so good! It gave you no pain at all and the ice cream was even better, you had two bowls of ice cream after you were able to convince Flo that the coldness of the ice cream was a relief on your throat. 

"It's going to be a long 2 weeks but I'm glad I get to spend it with you" you wrote on the white board and showed your girlfriend. "You're adorable baby, come here!" she opened her arms wide for you to crash into, which you did. There you lay, cuddled up on the sofa while Florence ran her fingers through your hair while watching TV until you drifted off to sleep not feeling any pain, not when you while you were in her arms.

💗 Ramble a bit about this character!

Prince/Wesley

I have way too many ideas for this guy I’m so obsessed with his situation! He really wants to see as much as he can of the world after being stuck in one room for so long, he is super fascinated by nature! Eventually he starts journaling about his life and the stuff he’s been able to do since leaving his sir :3 he really yearns to know who he was before, and would do anything to get his memories back! He has a lot of inner turmoil about loving his sir, and how he actually feels about him. He’s very shy until he breaks out of his shell, and then he has a very happy and playful personality! He has a tough time with his appearance and deciding for himself how he wants to look, which takes a while for him to get comfortable choosing clothes and styling his hair.

Mutt/Graham

I love him. So much. I don’t even know what to ramble about… I don’t want to spoil anything for him either!! He’s a hugeee softie, and tends to feel terrible about letting his emotions get to him so easily :( he doesn't often give himself the same compassion he gives others, and has a hard time loving himself. He wants to be friends with everyone at the safe house, but doesn’t think any of them would want to be friends in return! He hates being vulnerable, and hides his emotions as much as he possibly can, just like he was trained to! He’s always been very loyal to those he cares about, which was only amplified by becoming a pet! He’s extremely touch starved, and would do anything to be treated tenderly! He really refuses any memories trying to return, and that’s something very difficult for him.

Florence

He’s another great one… I especially love him because of his past! Lots of whumperflies from that one :3 When he first came to the safe house he was a lot like Prince, eager to join in but still very wary! He was dettered from having any speck of character from his old owners, but now he’s got a big personality, very humorous but kind of snarky at times. Has a load of self depreciation issues… he does not really like himself :( he’s working on it though! He often feels like if he’s not being of use, he’s automatically worthless, like a lot of domestics, so he still spends most of his days doing and begging for chores. It’s difficult for him to relax! He worries a lot about becoming who he was before being a pet.

Joey

I love her soooo much!!! She’s very quiet and pretty much likes keeping to herself (with her being a companion she definitely knows how to play up her personality and be more social) and can often get very tired of being in a house with so many people after it just being her and her lady for so long. She’s super duper besties with Florence and Otis, and would absolutely love for Agnes to come over more often! I can’t wait to eventually reveal the situation with her radio :] She’s a big reader in the safe house after relearning, her lady used to have a big library where she would read her books from.

Otis

Their ma’am was very elderly and in need of company and aid, and so Otis was bought for her by her daughter! Otis was rescued after she passed away, and taken to the safe house!! I’m still developing their personality as I write this, but I know that they are still working on a lot of stuff, and before Wesley and Graham was the newest to the shelter! They do their best to get along with everybody all of the time, and along with Florence are always itching for some kind of chore to do around the house! They are always polite and respectful, just like they were trained to be… Isaac absolutely loves when they say no to or complain about something!

Isaac

She’s trying her best!! Admittedly I sometimes worry that I make her unlikeable when I do want people to know that she really is trying to help the rescues so if anyone likes Isaac lmk… I would be very excited to hear that :] She hasn’t helped out nearly as many rescues as Edith and Oscar, so she’s still new to figuring out what works! She really wants to help out and do good in the world :3 she’s at her happiest when the rescues are at theirs, and she truly believes in every single one! She’s kind of like an older sister to all of them, very much a mom friend type. Her and Agnes tend to butt heads often, and so their relationship is a bit rocky, but they love each other to bits!!

Agnes

She is genuinely like my favorite to write I can’t wait to introduce her… her personality is inspired by a couple other characters from some other whump series here on tumblr!

She’s a very chill go with the flow kind of person, and hates any semblance of strictness or rules! She originally rescued herself from life with her mistress, and would never go back. She was at the shelter at the same time as August from my other series!!! They are fairly good friends :] she has a continuous history of losing and breaking stuff a lot, but she always keeps her most valued possessions safe. She definitely has a temper, and is fairly stubborn. She can never seem to keep a job for long, so tends to jump from one to the next. She’s still very much struggling after being in the shelter, but is still hopeful to make it out in the real world <3

Edith

Edith!!! I adore her!!! She’s very gentle, and treats ever rescue as if they were her very own kid! She used to have a very good job in IT work, before finding out more about pets and becoming more interested in pet liberation groups!! That’s actually where her and Oscar first met <33 she’s always trying her best, and tends to beat herself up about making mistakes with the rescues :( she is a very skeptical person, and does not trust people easily!! She’s always been a sort of anxious person, and was never good at making friends. Oscar is her best friend!! They love each other sooo much. She’s very good at communicating her feelings and helping other with boundaries :]

Oscar

Love him!!! He’s always been interested in pet liberation since he was in high school, and his dream for a long time was to start a safe house for them! He went to a very wealthy school which had kids who like. Actually had pets :/ he met some as a kid, and was always put off by it. His parents wanted him to go to college and be very successful, but he dropped out after realizing it just wasn’t for him! They were never supportive of his real calling, so never really talked to him after that :/ he loves Edith with his whole heart and would do absolutely anything for her or anyone else in the safe house. He keeps in touch with all of his past rescues!!

Atticus

Ohhh I hate him so much… I still need to show more about how he treats Prince and Mutt, but it’s not fun :( he’s a very put together guy who’s also great at lying! He is very intimidating, and knows well how to manipulate people. He always wanted pets since his parents had them, and eventually got his wish…

Clementine

Clementine is actually the one who helps rescue the two boxies!!! In her free time she gets really into pet liberation groups, and soon enough calls in to help Prince and Mutt saved :3 she’s always felt something was off with the whole pet thing, and after getting the job as Atticus’ maid her suspicions are set in stone.

Eloise

She is very strict with her views. She has a big judgmental side, and sees herself above a good amount of people. She’s a big rule follower and always looks for order in every situation. She takes a lot of pride in her work, and views it as her purpose! Is very critical of other people and not herself :/

Here is a spotify playlist of all the music I used, most of which fit the stories or characters in them. They do not flow into each other at all and there's an over-abundance of BRMC (they're my favourite band, shoot me), but these are all songs I really love. Apart from Let it Snow. That's there because I didn't plan any of this.

Final thoughts

Whumpuary2024 is the first month-long challenge I've undertaken, and it was extremely hard and really rewarding. I aimed to average a thousand words a day and blew clear past that most days, and a few times I barely stumbled across the line as beaten and bloodied as the people I was writing about. I'm incredibly glad I did it and I will probably try again next year (though maybe not a prompt a day next time!). Thank you @whumpuary for the fun event and for randomly crossing my dash at a moment when I was feeling creative enough to sign myself up

+ If you let Jeremy Renner actually act and give him a script, he's fucking great. + Kate Bishop is a perfect mess and I love her, I love she's young and excitable but also takes things seriously, she feels like she's a work in progress, I love her. + MAYA. Holy shit the gravity well of this character, how her presence dictates any scene she is in. Truly stellar. + This entire miniseries is like an extended apology for Hawkeye in every other appearance. "Sorry we dropped the ball with this character so consistently, we will bring the A game here." + The importance of disability. I'm among the ppl who was upset that Hawkeye's disability was dropped, so the way it is centered over and over and over in this, how its practical, how it's funny, how it's sad, how it gives us the most devastatingly emotional scene in all of the MCU yes I am talking about the phone call scene, finally. Fucking finally. + Florence fucking Pugh and her entire charm offensive. + The car chase scene.

- The first episode is unfortunately REALLY slow. - Nah that's all I got. I love this one.

THOR: RAGNAROK

+ "Asgard isn't a place, it's a people" is maybe the most poignant message any MCU film has ever managed. + Literally the funniest movie, but also basically a repair job of character building for everyone in it. + The camerawork in this one makes me so happy. + Tom Hiddleston is given so much to do and he's there with heels on, spectacular. + The giant turret/pegging visual pun, god bless. + Cate Blanchett can kill me.

- uuuuuuuuh. It's not as good as Hawkeye. Yeah.

GOTG Vol 2

+ Sorry but I am a GOTG Truther, I really do think its the one storyline in the MCU that is allowed to get away with really fucking intense character drama because it's not considered "main line." There is a reason ppl rioted when they tried to remove Gunn, and I'm with them. + The only good thing Chris Pratt has done since Parks and Rec. + The way this storyline centers on death and grief is devastating. + Rocket Racoon is the best character in the MCU and we all know it.

- I think the initial treatment of Mantis is REALLY rough even though in the end I think it works, but that's a hell of a hump to get over.

A-TIER, AKA the Great for a MCU Flick Tier:

BLACK PANTHER

+ My biggest problem with the MCU is the creative desert of its set and costume design, the way it feels like nothing is given time to breathe in the creative process. BP is the antithesis of that. I would watch a four hour documentary just on the visual design of this movie, from the architecture to the costumes to the make-up, everything. I don't want to hear from the director or writers, I want to hear four hours of just the craftspeople talking about their work. It's monumental. + Best Villain in the MCU, bar none. + Only MCU film to move me to actual tears in the movie theatre.

- I loved this movie! For the life of me I could not tell you the plot. I understand the plot of every Mission Impossible film but I don't know the plot of this movie. - If this movie was allowed to cut, like, 20 minutes of action and replace it with more character drama, it'd be the best MCU film.

IRON MAN 3

+ The MCU Movie That Pulls Exactly Zero Punches About Being About Mental Health And PTSD Holy Shit + Rhodey and Pepper get so much to do and I like an ensemble piece so much + Shane Black is in love with RDJ and I'm so happy for him + Pepper gets to be a lil monsterfied and that's hot

- Doesn't have Sam Rockwell. - The plot is kinda fully secondary to the character work, which imo is fine, but yanno.

GOTG Vol 1

- It's not Vol 2, which benefits from having all the bedrock foundation built by this movie to spring from.

B-TIER, AKA It's Fine I Guess:

IRON MAN 1

It's good! It invented the wheel! Part of it are fucking agonizingly painful to watch in 2023 but it also has more heart than 80% of the franchise so.

IN A CAVE. WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS.

LOKI

Okay it feels shitty of me to judge this one on its technical faults bc apparently it was shot during the pandemic and that causes a lot of the issues with the camerawork, the awkward editing, and just how Weird everything was put together. But also it's REALLY stilted and awkward, which butts up against the good script and the better acting, so IDK man.

Owen Wilson is amazing. Even my mother thought the way they canonized Loki being bi was a cop-out. And the final twist pissed me off. I hope Season 2 is better.

THOR 1

I DUNNO WHAT TO TELL YOU, BUT KENNETH BRANAGH UNDERSTOOD THE ASSIGNMENT.

DR STRANGE AND THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS

This movie is a mess but once i figured out it was trying to be The MCU Does Gothic Horror, I was a lot more on board. It has all the flaws of the original Dr Strange and is hard to visually follow like most MCU films, but also has America Chavez, who I adore.

IRON MAN 2

It has Sam Rockwell, I don't give a fuck.

C-TIER, AKA I wish I cared but I do not 8C

DR STRANGE

I dunno I like the actual character of Strange weirdly, I like what a complete fucking asshole he is, I like his god complex and how he reacts to his disability as a surgeon. On the other hand what the fuck is Tilda Swinton doing here, this is just awful. My biggest issue with this film is that it didn't have to be this terrible but every decision made about it feels so fucking thoughtless and myopic.

WANDAVISION

yanno. i cannot even explain why i fell off this so hard. Like, this one Had Me all the way up to and including the Agatha reveal, but like the final episodes after that reveal somehow left me completely cold and uncaring. it's genuinely weird.

D-TIER, AKA Oh my god no thank you

AVENGERS

I hate the writing. Like, I haaaaate the writing. I feel like the only likeable relationship in this is Tony and Bruce, and that does not carry this movie. The quip-driven writing, the way the need for a joke supercedes naturalistic voices and dialogue making sense, it pisses me off. I hate the writing. Heartless movie.

BLACK WIDOW

oh my god i'm actively angry at this movie okay because for the first 20 minutes, I was like "wait, is this going to be a real movie," because it felt smaller, the action felt more realistic, that fight between the Widow and Yelena in the beginning felt like it could have been out of MI: Fallout, and the other fight between Natasha and Yelena in the safehouse was also good, I really thought for a few moments that this could be Good

and then it just took a hard right into The MCU Tries And Fails To Make MI: Fallout (They Even Stole The Mask Gag, What The Fuck Was That) and not only was I disappointed, I was like retroactively pissed for the 20 minutes when I had hope in my heart. If not for David Harbour's character, I would have just left in the middle of this movie.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME

Its not at bad as Infinity War! Nebula and Rocket carried this movie on their fucking backs. But what do I know, I liked Renner's mohawk of sadness.

F-Tier, AKA Fuck This Movie

INFINITY WAR

Fuck this movie with a rusted steel dildo, fuck this entire fucking movie, I despise it. The writing is so actively fucking terrible I want to fistfight whoever is responsible. I fucking hate the attempts to humanize Thanos over how sad he is about the daughter he abused and then murdered, boo fucking hoo, I hate the joylessness of the superhero combinations, I hate the quip-driven writing, I hate this movie with a burning passion. This might be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Soulless and destitute.

Is it just me? But I find too that I like to plan my hangouts and outings with friends in advance now lol. When I was in my teens and early 20s, I used to just love to do things last minute and in the spur of the moment. But now, if it's not already planned in my calendar, I'm like..... "I don't really feel like going out.... I didn't plan for it..." 😩😭

Chapter 8

Warnings: Romance, optional smut, murder, blood, gore, slight alcohol intoxication

Preface: Heed the warnings and have fun!

You walk down the stairs into the foyer. “Good evening, y/n.” William greets you with a warm smile. “Evening, William.” You respond. You notice he’s admiring the fresh flowers in the vase. It’s full of burnt orange butterfly weed and vibrant pink camellia flowers. “Thought we needed a change from the usual lilies.” He says, taking one of the pink camellias and offering it to you. You take it and smile at it. "I do love pink camellias, they're so pretty and delicate. But gardenias will always be my favorite." You say, petting one of the petals. A servant walks briskly into the foyer and you both turn. “Master Gracey, dinner is prepared.” The servant says, keeping a distance from you. “Perfect, we’ll be there in a moment.” William says. The servant nods and gives you one last terrified look before leaving. “After you.” You tell William, putting the flower back. “I think we found our target.” Alistair suggests. You nod discreetly and follow William to the dining room. Dinner goes smoothly with light conversation.. William and Madame Leota excuse themselves to go begin their seance when the time comes. You think back to your plan as you sip your wine in the empty dining room. And just your luck, the same terrified servant comes to clear the table. “Ah, hello again…” You say making them jolt. “Uh- Jules.” They respond shakily. “What a lovely name.” You charm and their ears turn noticeably red. “Th-thank you.” They stutter, keeping their attention on staking plates. “Say, Jules, do you mind bringing me a gin?” You ask. “I’ll have it right out.” They say. “Oh, and get something for yourself as well. I’d love to have a little chat with you.” You smile at them. They stop what they’re doing and look at you and you raise a brow at them. “A-alright.” They say, quickly taking in the dirty plates. “This should be interesting. But don’t get too carried away, keep it clean, make it look like an accident or self-inflicted.” Alistair hums. “Yes, yes, I know.” You groan. “Just wish I could have more fun with it.” You circle the rim of your empty wine glass. “In time, my dear.” He smooths down your shoulders and you relax a little. “All good things come to those who can wait.” He kisses your cheek and you lean into it. “Yes… Of course.” You sigh. 

You move your chair so that it faces the chair next to it and angle the other chair to face yours. Jules pops back out with your glass of gin and a brandy for themself. “Thank you, kindly.” You say, taking the gin. You gesture for Jules to take a seat and they awkwardly sit in the chair next to you. “So Jules, how long have you served here?” You say swirling your gin. They look down at their glass of brandy in their lap. “About 3 months now.” They say skittishly. “Really? And what drew you to this place?” You ask, taking a sip. “There are many stories about this mansion. I was intrigued by them.” They say fiddling with their glass. “Hmm. Jules, I can’t help but notice you’re acting very skittish.” You say. They look up at you and clear their throat. “I uhm- there have just been some rumors that the staff have been spreading… about you.” They say, taking a drink for confidence. “Oh? That’s news to me. Mind telling me some? I promise I won’t get you in trouble.” You say. “W-well they say that you…” Jules trails off. “Yes?” You pry. “You k-killed Florence.” They finally let out, taking another drink of their brandy. “My goodness! Such colorful imaginations. How could they think such things of me?” You say with faux shock. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to offend you.” Jules cowers. “No, no, you didn’t offend me. I’m just appalled that someone would say such things about me. I mean can you imagine? Me, killing someone?” You laugh. “I suppose it is silly, isn’t it.” Jules chuckles, relieved. 

“Ah, well,” You sigh, “They are right.” You giggle. Jules looks up at you in shock. “W-what?” Jules says, beginning to tremble. “Oh come now, of course I did it. And I killed that lanky old man too.” You roll your eyes. A snap is heard and all the windows and doors disappear from the room. Jules looks around frantically looking for an exit. “Ooh, marvelous timing, darling.” You beam as his deep laughter echoes in the empty room. “What are you?!” Jules shrinks in their chair. “Your worst nightmare.” You cackle darkly. “But really, I’m just a mortal. That,” You gesture to where the door used to be. “Was all Alistair.” You take a sip of your gin. “A-Alistair? Is that a demon?” Jules looks around the room. “I am not a demon, foolish mortal!” His voice reverberates off the walls and Jules puts their arms up in defense. “He keeps insisting that he isn’t but he’s too devilish for me to believe him.” You scoff. “Don’t patronize me in front of the mortal.” Alistair materializes beside you with his arms folded. “Don’t worry about them. They’re a soon to be stiff anyway.” You dismiss him with a wave. “And how were you planning on doing that when you’re in this state?” Alistair gestures to your slight intoxication. “Oh, this?” You point to your almost empty glass of gin. “This is just my alibi.” You turn back to Jules who is gawking at Alistair. “Eyes front soldier.” You snap at Jules. ”I know he likes the attention but I’m the one doing the killing here.” You say, taking the last drink of your gin. “Right, get up.” You tell Jules while standing. “Are you going to kill me?” They squeak standing up on shaky legs. “Yes, I am, but you’ll be doing most of the work unfortunately. Have to make it look like an accident.” You say. They set their brandy on the table. “Nope, take that with you. You’re going to need it where you’re going.” You tell them, handing them the glass. “Where are we going?” They ask. “You are going to walk over there and face the wall.” You direct them.  They do as you say and you walk over to make sure they’re in the right position. “Hmm. Well done. Well, goodbye.” You say and kick them. They stumble, tripping backwards, striking their temple on the edge of the table as you hear a sickening pop of their neck. Their body thuds on the floor as blood begins to pool around their head, their neck at an unnatural angle. “That went swimmingly.” Alistair says. “At least they’re still holding the brandy glass, more convincing that way.” You kneel down checking their pulse on their broken neck just to make sure. You feel nothing, knowing they’re gone. “Not as satisfying, but I suppose that’s one less gossip around.” You sigh, looking at the clock on the mantel. “I’d hate to interrupt the seance, but waiting would only raise suspicions.” You think. “No time like the present.” Alistair says, snapping again as the windows and doors return. “If I must.” You say walking out as Alistair dematerializes. 

You clear your throat as you begin preparing yourself to perform again. You pound your fist rapidly on the portrait door. “William! Madame Leota!” You shout, opening the door. You walk in and notice just in time that a tambourine is flying straight at your head. You duck out of the way and it slams against the wall. “Y/n? What’s happened?” William asks as Madame Leota stops the seance. “Jules, the servant! They fell in the dining room! We were just talking and having a few drinks and they hit their head!” You say slurring your speech a little to play up your intoxication. “Let me see them.” Madame Leota says, surprising you a little. “A-alright, they’re just this way.” You direct them to the dining room. William gasps at the sight and immediately looks away, embracing you and tucking his head into your neck. “Craven as usual. Poor lily-livered Gracey.” Alistair scoffs at the sight. You hold him close and whisper reassurances, ignoring Alistair. “Just as I thought.” Madame Leota says waving a feather over the body. “You’re cursed. Death has followed you twice now and it shows no signs of stopping.” She says, walking over to you and William. “Who could’ve cursed me? A demon?” You ask, keeping a straight face but laughing internally. “You think you’re amusing, don’t you?” Alistair groans. “No, not a demon. Possibly someone you had contact with within the past month.” She says. “I did have a few drinks in a shady place in the quarter a couple weeks ago.” You say, making something up on the fly. “Then it’s possible someone there cursed you. But no matter, I will cleanse you tomorrow night in the seance room after our seance.” She says. “Is there anything I can do now to keep the curse at bay?” You ask. “Avoid stressful situations. It feeds on your fear and takes advantage of it. For now though, we’ll call on the servants to prepare and bury the body tonight and hold a funeral tomorrow.” She says. “What about their relatives? Wouldn’t they want the body, like Florence?” You ask, petting William’s hair. “Jules had no relatives, sadly.” She says bowing her head. “Ah, I see.” You hold William out of comfort. “I’ll let them know, you go get some rest, I’m sure this has taken a toll on you.” She says. William releases you reluctantly and your touch on his arms lingers a little longer, not wanting to let him go. “Good night, y/n.” William says timidly. “Good night.” You say and turn out of the room before you can think anymore about the situation. 

“And what was that about?” Alistair says as soon as you’re out of earshot of anyone. “It was nothing, Alistair.” You groan walking up stairs. “It didn’t look like nothing. And the flowers earlier didn’t look like nothing either! You have feelings for him don’t you?” Alistair prise. “No, Alistair, it's not like that.” You say walk into your room, closing the door behind you. “You love him.” He hisses, materializing and pinning you against the door by your shoulder. “Alistair, I don't love him like I do you.” You say trying to stay calm. “Then what was that, hmm?” He asks. “He’s weak and I like the power I have over him.” You say, shrugging off Alistair’s grip on your shoulder. “So you want something with him?” Alistair asks. “I’m not sure yet. What I am sure of is that he’ll never have what we have. He isn't taking your place or encroaching on your territory. He can't be who you are to me.” You reassure him. Alistair takes a moment to mull over your words. “Then I suppose for now, it’s alright.” Alistair says begrudgingly. “Good.” You sigh.

You walk to your bed and flop down exhausted from the day. Curling up under the sheets as Alistair dims the lights and goes to his usual place. “Hmm, no.” You say patting the bed in front of you. “Come here.” Alistair looks at you a little confused but does as you said. You position yourself and spoon Alistair, nuzzling into his shoulder. “You like this?” You hold him close. “I prefer it the other way, but this is alright for tonight.” He says cozying up to you. You slowly drift off to sleep, hoping to at least have a few hours of dreamless sleep.

I Almost Remember (Once Upon A December) (From "Anastasia") is about when Amelia is reminiscing about her life as the princess of Hamelin. She distantly remembers of her childhood living within the palace, and she feels a strong sense of nostalgia as she wanders from room to room. Later on, she imagines the ballroom coming to life as dancers waltz across the floor. She sings of remembrance, memories, and a sense of forgetting something she once held near and dear to her heart.

This Journey To The Past (From "Anastasia") is about Amelia has just recently wandered the forest and is now making her way to the kingdom of Far, Far Away in an impulsive decision to find her old home. She sings about finding her path through life and making it to her way, where her old home must live and where her past must reside. In other words, she is on a “journey to the past”—the past that she had been her old home before. Pied Piper follows his lead to Amelia's path.

Life's Too Short (From "Frozen") is the hero and villain duet song is about Amelia trying to using Goldilocks to be her sister, and the two former sisters finally being friends now that Goldilocks' secret is revealed. Their opposite personalities keep them away from one another, though.

And This Is The Thanks I Get?! (From "Wish") is the villain song is about the citizens of Hamelin and the people of Far, Far Away are close to revolt as they press Goldilocks (voiced by Judy Kuhn in her singing role) for greater transparency regarding what she is doing with her entire life as she spies on Amelia falling in love with Pied Piper. Goldilocks goes back into the Far, Far Away palace and vents about the ingratitude of her subjects, amid much complimenting herself on her good looks.

I Make This Wish (From "Wish") is about Amelia (voiced by Ariana DeBose in her singing role) has found out that Pied Piper (voiced by Emmanuel Pahud, the flutist when Pied Piper is unable or chooses not to speak) has no intention of not paying the piper that the citizens of Hamelin have fooled to him. Outraged, she finds a high spot outside the castle and sings this song about wishing she had the power to help not only Pied Piper or Goldilocks, but everyone in the town of Hamelin and even the kingdom of Far, Far Away. And she looks up the stars and makes her wish.

Let It Go (From "Frozen") is about Amelia with her struggles to find her place in a world that knows her and a life she’s knew that she too many bad things of.

Let It Go (Reprise) (A Fanmade song from "Frozen") is about when Amelia (Ariana DeBose in her singing role) pleads to the people of Far, Far Away and the citizens of Hamelin to change its future and stop Goldilocks (Florence Pugh in her speaking role).

And the final song is I Make This Wish (Reprise) (From "Wish") is about an aftermath of Goldilocks' defeat, Amelia saw Pied Piper statues him to death, she wishes for him to come back alive, promises him to see her as the magic of an act of true love. Amelia hugs Pied Piper and cries. The people of Far, Far Away and the citizens of Hamelin watches in shocked despair and in somber silence. But all of the sudden, Amelia's wish was granted and it came true, Pied Piper begins to thaw, the statues breaks and cracks, he came back alive! And Pied Piper embraces Amelia as the magic of an act of true love.

I mean, the title says it all. He fell first, she fell harder, a little obliviously mutual pining (and everyone around them rolling their eyes) later, they're the embodiment of "this might as well happen." But make it romance.

As in, ‘I want to kiss you because I really like you,’ not ‘I like you because I really want to kiss you.’ He stopped midstep, heart pounding with both joy and terror at the realization that this wasn’t a cut and dry case of having the hots for his coworker. “Well,” he said, putting his hands on his hips, “shit.” What did he do now?

Is it cheating if it's in a different language? Not if the character speaks said language. A song for the spicy Cajun girl who built a huge chunk of her identity on being Not Scared Of Anything, but is deeply terrified of the fact that she's crushing on someone for the first time in her life. (Bonus points because she literally didn't realize it for 3/4 of the manuscript. I'm not getting over that.)

She glanced surreptitiously to the side, scanning Rowan for any hint of how he was interpreting it. He had his hair down, running his fingers through the ends as he watched the alley ahead of them with a residual smile. Evan’s stomach did that weird twisting thing again, and a tiny jolt went through her as something shifted into place in her mind. Something totally foreign to her, a murky, terrifying unknown slowly fading into focus as her eyes traced the angles of his face.

What can I say? I'm a sucker for the scared-of-vulnerability and helpless-descent-into-madness vibes. This one applies to both of them. They're both terrified in different ways and for different reasons-- Rowan because he's usually the smooth talking player who dates around and is always chill, and now he's totally off his game with the facade stripped away. Evan because she's never actually cared for anyone like this, and she also doesn't know how to be the vulnerable, needy one.

Alas, there's not a ton of other quotes I could draw from because Major Spoilers, but have a snippet of a lil heart-to-heart that was particularly fun to write.

“You know,” she said after a moment, “a while back you told me that if the detective thing didn’t work out, I had a future as a therapist.” She looked up with a smirk. “I didn’t realize you were projecting.” “Side effect of your mom having a doctorate in psychology,” Rowan said with a smile. “The analysis, anyway. The awkwardly saying it out loud uncalled for is all me, unfortunately.” “Hey now, you don’t get to give a speech like that and then go calling yourself unfortunate.” With no witty comeback to be had, he just chuckled quietly. “Thank you,” Evan said, quickly and quietly. “I… I think I kind of needed that.” “I meant it,” Rowan said. “You really are incredible.” Their eyes met and lingered in a warm, fragile silence.  “I don’t know why this feels like the time to say it,” Evan said after a moment, “but for all the insanity and general screwed-up-ness of this whole situation… if nothing else, I’m glad it means I got to know you.” “The feeling’s mutual,” Rowan said quietly.

Maybe it's time to get back to focusing on rewrites and shortening this one. I forgot how much fun I had writing these kids.

Welcome home, Darcy!

I adopted a cat from a rescue in Columbia, South Carolina. Of course this meant we had to drive to go get the cat, and it turns out there’s more than one route to go pick up the cat. Let’s take a deeper dive into that and then I’ll tell you how things really went.

Route 1: US1 with a charge stop in Lilesville

This route is more direct, taking a little over 4 hours door-to-door with a charging stop on both the outbound and return legs. This station is run by the Pee Dee Electric Member Cooperative on the ChargePoint network and only costs 14-cent/kWh (about 3-cent more expensive than home charging), but it’s only a 50kW charger. 

Route 2: US1 with a charge stop in Hamlet

This route was roughly the same as Lilesville, however, the Duke Park and Plug stations here are 150kW each (so we’d get the full 75kW if the battery was low enough) but they cost more at 41-cent/kWh (30-cents or 3.7x the cost of home charging). In theory, we’d spend less time here since this system can max the car out -- but it also assumes that we’d need to be at a very low state of charge to achieve that maximum power.

Route 3: I-95 to I-20 with charge stops in Florence

Every single mapping app suggested taking 95 to 20, and at the time the Electrify America app said that all the stations at Florence were reduced to 50kW power -- so no maximum charge rate. It’s also 36-cent/kWh (25-cents more / about 3.2 times the cost of home charging). This route seemed the least attractive as the travel time was at best 12 minutes faster and we’d certainly be charging for longer, however this location does have good food options to chew up that time (har har, I made a pun!).

The Winner is...

My husband wanted to see what taking US1 to Columbia was like, as this is my alternative route to get to our campground in Georgia. So we decided to take the Hyundai down to Lilesville and then to Columbia. We left around 7:00am with a target arrival time of 12:00pm in Columbia (I budgeted 1 hour for charging). With 100% state of charge we set off for Lilesville and arrived with 58% after driving 110 miles. We only had two or three scary downpour moments from the severe storm front that was moving through the area.

As I plugged in I was inspecting the charge handle and noticed the rubber around the button was cracked. When I plugged into the car I did not hear the usual “click” of the latch on the plug locking into the socket on the car. However, the station said “Waiting for EV” and the car engaged the charge lock and the status ring in the charge port went green, followed by the ChargePoint station clicking and delivering power. Turns out the latch was broken, so it was pure luck that the station started charging. We never topped 48kW due to the state of charge, and we charged for 42 minutes to 90%. While PlugShare said this station was a 62kW, the screen said it’s a 50kW -- missing 12kW can make a big difference, but since the battery was over 50% the car wasn’t going to charge faster than 50kW anyway so it was a wash. This stop cost $3.52.

As we are pulling out of the parking lot, the foster texts me and says that she won’t be home before 1pm -- I tell her no problem, we will get lunch and see her at 1. The problem with charging at places like the Pee Dee main office is that there’s no bathrooms available outside their Monday-Friday business hours. Right as we went to leave, the urge to pee hit me. I asked Google for a truck stop and picked a Love’s that was on the way -- a little over an hour out. As we snaked our way into South Carolina and over to I-20, we watched as the sun peeked out of the clouds and the rain seemed to stay behind us. 

The Love’s I’d picked was off of I-20, and before we got there I spied another truck stop that also had a Subway -- this would be ideal for lunch. My husband’s like “Subway? Really?” and I told him that I know I can get something from Subway that won’t upset my stomach (remember I take Ozempic and I basically don’t like the “read meat burps” I get if I eat burgers and such from fast food places anymore). We pulled off at the Pilot travel center and hit the restroom, then walked into the Subway where we each ordered a wrap -- $25 later (when did Subway become so expensive?) we headed to the car to continue our trip. By this time we’d decided, since we were arrive around 12pm, that we’d go to the Electrify America and top the car off so we could drive straight home from the foster’s home.

Unfortunately, the Electrify America in Columbia was in worse shape than Florence -- only one station was operational, but it was running at 150kW. That said, it was in use according to the app when I checked about 20m to the exit. I decided to try the Nissan dealer down the road, seems the station works fine but the NAYAX card reader (ugh, I can’t stand these guys) was problematic and it might take a few tries to get the card to read. The Nissan Dealer is a mile or so from the Electrify America, so if it didn’t work we’d just wait for the person at the Electrify America station to finish and then plug in. As luck would have it, it started raining when we pulled up to the charger. I tried using Google Pay on my phone and it was rejected. By the time I got my wallet from the car, it had timed out so I had to run through the steps to start a charge on the screen again. This time I put in my chip card and it said not authorized. I tried swiping, it said to insert it, I put it in and it said not authorized. Then it timed out, so again I ran through the steps and got to the payment screen and I tapped my card. I got an error and then on a whim stuck the card into the chip reader and volia -- it started processing the payment! Third time’s the charm. The station fired right up, and as we were again around 56% state of charge, it never went above 48kW. We charged for about 42 minutes while we ate our wraps (it was tasty) and then drive the 6 miles to the foster house. The cost was around 42-cents/kWh with a $1 session fee, all said it was $9.39 to charge up here.

Darcy was more beautiful in person than any of the photos I’d seen. Her sister, Dixie, was also way more adorable in person. Dixie is blind, and despite that, she was the more social of the two and came up and head butted my ankle and rubbed on me. Now, my previous cat was blind... and I told the foster I’m really torn now. But we both agreed (tho me not 100%) that our household was way too active for her to adjust to, she panicked when she came into contact with any of the other cats living in the house that were not her sister or their room mate in the quarantined section of the house (a bathroom and a hallway that has a few bedrooms -- all doors closed, of course). Darcy was aloof and not really interested in meeting us or letting us pet her, but the foster said she was confident she’d be affectionate after she had time to settle into her new home.

When we brought in the cat carrier, the foster went and got gloves just in case Darcy decided to claw at her (she said she didn’t have a habit of it, but this was safety protocol). We opened the door to the carrier and low and behold Dixie marched right into it and checked it out. She was not scared of it at all, and then Darcy walked into the carrier behind her to check it out. We were both dumbfounded that the cats just put themselves into the carrier -- no cat likes the carrier! The foster put her gloved hand into the carrier and ushered Dixie out (she never bit, but she did growl), and Darcy never made a sound. Once Dixie was outside, we closed the cage door -- not even quickly, slowly. It wasn’t until the door clicked shut that Darcy’s Siamese yowl started. Oh, boy, this ride home was gonna be fun. It was at this time that the foster tells me the cats ate about an hour and a half before we got there... remember that, dear reader.

We spent well over an hour at the foster home before we loaded Darcy into the car and headed back towards North Carolina. About 10 minutes into the drive -- we’d just gotten onto the highway -- the smell hit. She pooped. In the carrier. Then she sat on the poop. We killed the AC and vented the sunroof and opened most of the windows -- it was sunny and comfortable (low 60s) so this wasn’t bad. Once we went nose blind to the smell, we closed up the windows and turned on the AC just in time for another surprise rain shower! We drove straight home with only one stop to pick up Pho for dinner about 4 miles from our house. When John got back in the car after getting the food he commented on how the nose blindness had worn off, and he gagged a little before rolling down his window.

As soon as we got home, Darcy was taken into her quarantine bathroom and let out of the carrier. I set the carrier outside and shouted “someone please take this carrier outside for me” and proceeded to get a wash cloth and my Lush “Honey I washed the kids” bath gel. Poor Darcy, who only made a few peeps on the drive home, was about to yowl like no tomorrow. I turned on the shower and the sound of water immediately made her start scrambling for a place to hide. I scruffed her (grabbed her by the back of the neck) and took her into the shower. Much to my amazement, she didn’t fight me. The only injury I sustained was a small claw puncture to my pinky finger. This cat can jump, though. She got on the shower seat and about cleared the top of the glass shower door. Once I got her soaked and sudded up, I rinsed her and wrapped her in a towel and dried her off. She never fought me, not once. This is a very good sign about her personality, so I was relieved that the worst was over.

After the bath, I moved a small cat tree into the bathroom and used it to prop open the sink cabinet and draped a towel over the opening so she had a level of privacy. I set out food and water, and let her be. Luckily she ate the next morning while I was sitting in the room with her, and she used the bathroom the night before in the litterbox. Now we wait for her to settle into her new home, and I can’t wait to see the look on her face when she sees how big this house is.

So there you have it, folks. We went to Columbia SC and back to Raleigh NC for $13 in charging, about 450 miles in total.
