We should start investing in your theory about 8x11 and 8x12 right away. Ryan is already hiking the stakes. I'm not even going to be surprised if they have a first kiss that extends into two episodes (starts as the last scene for one and bleeds into the first scene for the next).

wait wait can you imagine if we got some kind of cliffhanger in 8x11 paralleling the cliffhanger in 4x13? like we get eddie leaning in and kissing buck,and then he panics and takes two steps backwards and we just have them looking at each other and then… boom, end of the episode. and then 8x12 starts and eddie starts apologizing and saying sorry and this time it’s buck that goes all in and grabs eddie’s face and just kisses the life out of him.

The Magicians, season 1-3: You can live with depression and suicidal ideation, even as you realize and have to come to terms with the fact that there’s no easy fix to these problems. 

The Magicians, season 4: Actually, there is an easy fix. It is dying.

And this is a smaller thing but. As someone who enjoys watching romances on-screen, I'm also bitter that every single romance in The Magicians went to a place I disliked sometime between 4x10 and 4x13.

Q/Eliot: downplayed and ignored by the narrative.

Q/Alice: the episodes before 4x12 had me genuinely excited about an exes-becoming-friends plotline which is. Very rare on TV still.

Kady/Penny40: the "all I ever wanted to be was Penny's girlfriend" line made me want to set myself on fire. And I found them a legit compelling tragic romance before, too, so that made it worse that now I have to hate what it's done to Kady.

Julia/Penny23: having Penny make the choice in Julia's place instead of him using his innate powers to just. Ask her. Ugh. I was really shipping them before that, too.

Margo/Josh: I genuinely liked Margo and Josh before the whole fish thing, but giving her the perfect set-up to not have to choose between Eliot and Josh, but then inexplicably have her choose Josh anyway has made me dislike the pairing severely. So.

Marina/nameless girlfriend: I'm just bitter Marina disappeared after being confirmed queer, thanks!

And it frustrates me because I genuinely liked everything that was happening romantically before 4x11.

But you know what really pisses me off about that abomination of a finale? The writers made so much time for every single m/f couple to talk to or about each other and then tried to say there just wasn't time for Queliot to even make eye contact.

Penny got to talk to/make up with Julia at least once after robbing her of agency (great). Josh got a monologue to prove he understood Margo on a soul-deep level (whatever). Alice and Quentin of course had their little "tee-hee-hee, no I want to protect you more" moment on the stairs, (of course there was enough time to make sure Alice's last memory with Quentin was a good one). I guess Kady and Penny 40 didn't get any time together, so they're the one exception, but since Penny is dead, that makes sense.

I mean, I've never in my life talked seriously about having heterosexual relationships shoved up in my face, but damn, if that wasn't kind of what it felt like, watching every single straight couple hash out their issues, wondering when it would be Queliot's turn to at least acknowledge one another, and then not even getting that.

So it's not just that Quentin and Eliot didn't get to even look at each other. It's that it felt like the writers actually went out of their way to invalidate their one queer couple as much as they possibly could by first giving every straight couple ample time to say whatever they wanted to each other, and then not giving Eliot and Quentin any time at all.

And you try and figure out the "why" of it. And it seems too deliberate to just be a careless mistake. So, then, all you can come up with is "well...I guess they just hate us". Though I'm not at all sure what the LGBTQIA audience did to earn that kind of hatred.

Anyway, fuck this show, I'm still pissed.

So, it looks like the never ending shit steam of info surrounding 4x13 isn’t going to stop anytime soon. There’s continuously more info coming from people involved, and with more interviews from comic con and such in the future, you can bet your ass they’ll be more frustrating stuff getting uncovered.

Personally, I like to stay up to date and know how things unfold. But, I know some people are ready to move on. I can understand that, for some people just dropping it for the time being is the most important thing for their mental health.

So, I’ll be tagging all my future posts that involve talking about 4x13 drama as #The 4x13 Clown Car. (Inspired by those posts with people talking about all this shit like clowns coming out of a car.) I welcome other Magicians blogs to use it too, that way people who just want to focus on positive or fluffy content from happier episodes can do that without having to unfollow blogs. (Or, conversely, someone looking to dig up some quick info on what’s gone down with 4x13 can search the tag.)

Has anyone else noticed that Chris Fisher (widgetfactoryco, the producer who posts the Magicians Noir BTS pics) has been responding to TM fans on his Twitter a lot the last couple of days? There’s a lot more than just these, and I’m not quite sure how I feel about it? His responses at least sound a lot more empathetic than what we’ve been getting from SJH. But he’s stopping just shy of admitting that any mistakes were made by anyone in charge. I don’t know, it’s just that he’s the first one from TPTB to actually wade into the fan conversations in any remotely positive way. It looks like he read @greywash‘s article/dw posts, at the very least.

I don’t know, y’all. It’s certainly not enough, but at the same time it feels like so much since we haven’t even gotten crumbs before this.

I think one of the main reasons why I am so fucked up over The Magicians is that I got into it so late. Like, I only got into it around the time 4x10 aired, so I got to wholeheartedly love it only for three weeks or so. I was still deep in the phase of "omg this show is so good omg I love everyone in this bar and omg the fandom is the best ever" and then my trust got shattered so spectacularly. Usually this happens only after years of liking something. I didn't even get to catch up with the show, I still had like a season and a half to watch.

It feels like I got cheated on while I was on my honeymoon and I'm genuinely heartbroken.

One thing that still manages to surprise me is how The Magicians finale like, actually got me to dislike characters. Like I genuinely liked and enjoyed both Penny 23 and Josh before the end of S4. I found Penny 23′s role in the story interesting, and the tension in his relationship with Julia was compelling. I wanted to know more about him. And I thought Josh was, largely, funny and sweet, and the scene of him giving the music to Margo was so nice. 

And somehow, in a pretty short amount of time, The Magicians writers managed to make me not just apathetic towards these characters, but like almost actively annoyed with them. It’s. Super frustrating.

In the wake of the resurgence of anger after the showrunners' terrible remarks at sdcc, there's also, of course, the people who try to argue that this anger isn't valid - not that loud, not still after so much time has passed, not for the emotional health of the people who are angry - all of which generally boils down to 'sit down and shut up', just dressed up in nicer words.

Meanwhile, John McNamara and the other showrunners are out there actively doubling-down on the pro-suicide rhetoric by talking about Quentin's 'legacy' as if he were a venerable elder, by acting as if this was a brave writing choice rather than embracing some very ugly cliches. Quentin was a twenty-something depressed queer man who committed suicide. Defending that writing choice is an active harm that John and the other showrunners are choosing to continue to engage in, still, three months after the fact.

They still refuse to admit to the damage they willingly caused to the people in their audience- the audience they courted and encouraged to watch - an audience who are already at additional risk of suicide. So, yeah, I'm not particularly inclined to sit down and shut up while they're actively twisting the knife. And just because I feel a great deal of anger and, yes, bitterness doesn’t mean that I don’t feel other things, too.

I love the characters. Hating what the showrunners chose to do, how they chose to adapt a work about recovery from depression and suicidal tendencies and twist it into a work about succumbing to depression and suicidal tendencies... my hate for this choice and how it has ruined the future of the show for me, doesn’t mean that the affection that I do have for the characters and the past and the show that I believed that it was before all this... it doesn’t mean any of that is invalid.

Yeah i mean, i personally really don’t see these reasons, bc neither BT nor Eddie leaving the 118 pose any real threat imo. The time it takes them to actually make something clear might, but patience is a virtue, and this is practically undiscovered territory they are moving into.

Like I said, the clown car's always running in this house xD You could have them be 90, married to someone else for 60 years with 10 children and a million grandchildren each and i'd still be on the buddie clown car ajdklsajd

I just hope 5b lives up to some of the threads they've set down since 4x13!
