Cliopher sayo Mdang:
[image description: the "I bring a sort of X vibe to the Y" meme template—a photo of a black man looking out across the grassy shoulder of a highway, turned mostly away from the camera with a serene expression—with the text edited to say 'I bring a sort of "incremental yet inexorable shift towards socialism" Vibe to government of Zunidh that the entrenched aristocracy don't really like.' End I.D.]

It was true that I had become friends with Kip after he and I had had several conversations in which we told each other true things about our emotions, even if both of us retreated quickly thereafter to easier topics, like world governance and the eradication of poverty.

AT THE FEET OF THE SUN (Lays of the Hearth-Fire #2)
Cliopher Mdang has been appointed Viceroy of Zunidh by his beloved Radiancy, the Last Emperor, who has now left him behind in the Palace to safeguard the world during his absence on a quest to find an appropriately magical heir. When he returns, he will abdicate, and Cliopher will at last retire, satisfied with having achieved most of his life's political goals--even if his long-suppressed personal dreams are starting to bubble up.
(Surely he used to have hobbies besides running the government?)
All he has to do is wait patiently for his lord's return... until adventure quite literally hits him from behind, and what was once safely hypothetical becomes intensely real.
Cliopher has always followed the stars of his chosen course: the epic oral histories of his people, the poetry of the rebel poet Fitzroy Angursell, decades of devotion and service to his Radiancy... They were enough to change the world. But are they enough to guide Cliopher home?

not to post about the nine worlds again, but also that scene in “the return of fitzroy angursell” where tor is talking to—i forget if it was the shepherdess or Jullanar—and one of them suggests just talking to his friends about his feelings. and tor considers for a moment and is just like. hmm. kip doesn’t do that. still not sure if my bff has ever actually talked to his family about his job. but maybe it’s worth a try.
and like. poor kip is out here running the government, keeping the emperor sane, writing to each of his 59 cousins and various other relatives on a regular basis, trying to refurbish a house that’s halfway across the world from him… the guy can’t do it all. he’s a model for many things, but clearly not for talking to his loved ones about his feelings before they reach a boiling point

‘Fitzroy,’ he said slowly and seriously, ‘have you ever told someone what you were truly thinking?’
I could had said something flippant, one of those truths that no one ever believed - I could have told them about those truths that no one ever believed - but I was tired, and spoke a hard truth, instead. ‘Masseo, people have committed suicide because I told them what I actually thought.’
