#the art of fiction no. 239
🔹2023 Wrap Up🔹
I've never really done an end of the year type of post, but I got inspired somehow. Maybe because this year has been in many ways slower and filled with rest more than any other year in my life so far (which is a good thing), but I started looking back, wondering if I'd really done "anything" this year, and I can see there's still a decent amount of things I've accomplished that are meaningful to me. So, this is almost diary type self-reflection. But I'll post it because I would like to see other people do this type of thing too. ✨
This is mostly work and hobbies related.
Original writing published
Rummuttaja (Drummer)
My third published novel and the first book in my first fantasy series. I'll talk about it more in its own post but it's about an island where people can control earthquakes with music, and musically gifted children are brought up as heroes to be. I spent about half of 2023 editing this book and I'm probably more proud of it than anything else I've published.
Sydäntekniikkaa (Heart Techniques)
A short story, or a novella, with a spin on the innocent girl meets heartless boy trope. Discusses politics, environment, prejudice, ignorance and disability in a fantastical setting. It was published in a steampunk anthology Rautasilmä ja muita steampunk-kertomuksia (Iron eye and other steampunk stories) with three other stories. Here's a drawing of my main character.
A book review I wrote on Sankareita ja shakkinappuloita (Heroes and chess pieces) by Heidi Torn, appeared in a Finnish SFF magazine Kosmoskynä. I very rarely make time to help with this magazine I've subscribed to for many years, so I'm glad I did. The book was about Greek gods in modern day Finland, so as a Percy Jackson fan I was obviously intrigued.
Original works written
2023 wasn't the most active writing year since I spent so much time editing, but I managed to write
about a half of a fantastical murder mystery in a ballet school told from the perspective of seven students with very different views on the school and the people in it
a short story about a magical doll maker student attempting to manipulate another guy to be less full of himself
Editing work
I've just started as one of three editors for a magic school story anthology. It is my first time so I'm learning from the other two who are more experienced and actually have their university degrees in Finnish language which I don't. I was asked along as more of the magic school expert since most of my published work so far is set in them. We are only just starting to go through the submissions since the deadline was the end of the year, so I haven't done much yet but I really love helping other people make the most of their writing, so I'm very excited. ✨
Fan fiction
Words published: 225 239
Words written: 263 315
Not including a few 100 word drabbles, and fake chats which are actually from past fics anyway just in visual form.
My fics were mostly KagaKuro, as they usually are, but I also wrote one AoMomo. My plans for 2024 have more diverse focus characters, though!
Illustration/Graphic design
I got more work for cover design than before this year. I'm still such a newbie on this, but I'm fairly happy with many of them, and I've discovered such passion for this art. Only writing books is more satisfying than getting to be the one to bring out the book's core in a visual form. And some of the authors have really loved the covers and felt like I got them, which of course feels amazing. I always wanted to do my own covers but now that I get to do other people's too I just want to do it more and more.
Drawings/Paintings
This was definitely a KnB heavy year! Which I enjoyed a lot. I didn't do that many original things but I was really happy to get back to traditional art after several years now that I think my digital art skills have improved to pretty much the same level.
Comics
I didn't really complete anything but in June I got about half way through this KagaKuro comic (with female Kuroko) based on my own fic Kuroko's Fairytale.
This is definitely one of the things I want to finish the most in 2024! I felt so high drawing it. It was such a strange experience because female Kuroko was not supposed to be a thing for me... (it was supposed to be just one funky fic that happens in a dream, never to be revisited again, because my brain is so much work it beats itself up about even the most minuscule changes I might like to make on existing characters, like, my brain just has no chill about fiction, everything is death serious, it's fucking annoying even to me) But. BUT. B U T. When I was drawing this comic. Oh. My. God. I have no words for how good it felt. Like, I obviously knew you can experience love on behalf of fictional characters (hello, shipping) but I had never before experienced gender euphoria on behalf of a fictional character. There's no other way to describe it, girl Kuroko absolutely destroyed me in the best of ways. So she's here to stay, I can't push her back anymore.
Anyway, have a sneak peek. I still struggle a lot with consistent anatomy as I have my whole life, but there are a few frames I love already, my favourite probably being the one which is also my icon.
Not that I'm not also in love with stupid prince Kagami, but I was never fighting that so it's a little different.
Books read
Not an especially good reading year in quantity. In quality it was, though. I don't think there was one book that I disliked. My problem these days is that every time I try to take time to read a book, about a half an hour into it my brain goes like... You know what? You could be working on your own writing. But it's also very important for a writer to read, so I have to retrain my brain to stop feeling like it's wasting time when I read.
Total: 29 (or 35 if you count KnB as two volumes each since it's double edition)
New books: 17
Rereads: 12(/18)
Several of these are books I did covers for, and I started a KnB reread to check for ideas I haven't covered in my fics yet, so if you take these "business" reads out of the equation, I didn't read that much for just pleasure. That's something I want to improve in 2024.
The most memorable book was probably The Song of Achilles (a damn difficult read since I saw so many of my own relationships patterns in Patroclus to a painful detail, ugh. And yeah Achilles definitely reminded me of some specific people too. Kind of destroyed all my blissful surrealist separation with this story and made me disillusioned with it, but in the end it might have been good for me).
Fics read
Ok, this is downright shameful to me. I read so little. But go give some love to these fics I've read which were obviously made with love.
Reap What You Sow (one-sided (??) AoMomo) by @vespersposts
summer drabble (Kagami) by cempasuchil_03
Noodle Kiss (KagaKuro) by @myndless88
The Art of Self-Pillage (Haizaki, OC) by @lylakoi
Let's Have a War (Kise, Kasamatsu, OC) by @lylakoi
Tastes of Cinnamon (KagaKuro) by @lilypheria
Nail art
A new hobby for me! I hadn't even owned nail polish before. And couldn't stand long nails either. I have no clue what inspired this, to be honest. I'm very new to it, but here are my favourites.
The text print on blue nails was definitely the most me, but I think I particularly enjoy prints in general. I made the star ones for Christmas.
I bet I've forgotten something obvious but this post is pretty long already and it looks like a pretty good summary. Definitely helped me sort out my thoughts on what I want to do in 2024 and what priorities I should have.
Good luck to everyone on all your future plans. ✨💙

im reading "the art thief" by michael finkel rn (i don't typically read a ton of non-fiction but every once in a while one will catch my eye) and this art thief stole 239 art pieces in a 6 year span and idk, call me weird, but for some reason i don't really feel anything one way or another about him stealing all this stuff (actually now that i think about it, it's bc i went into this book knowing he got caught and assumed all of it got recovered), until i looked him up on google to find out what he looks like and found out his family destroyed most of the stuff he stole

“WHY did that alien ambassador just call me ‘peasant’??”
“Sorry, sorry, it’s a problem with the translation software.”
“What kind of problem? Am I about to insult him by accident too? I want it to be on purpose.”
“No, it’s just that the software had trouble with root words and etymology, comparing our concepts to theirs. They don’t have a word for ‘god,’ you see, and—”
“What the blazes does that have to do with it?”
“Look. The word ‘human’ can be translated as ‘person who lives on the ground, or the dirt, or the Earth, and who isn’t a god.’”
“So how did that—”
“It turned into ‘person who lives in the dirt and has no power over others.’ The closest they had when repeating it back through the translator was ‘peasant.’”
“That is the stupidest thing I’ve heard all week.”
“Why do you think I’ve been pressing for everyone to actually learn the language, instead of relying on the translator?”
“Well, if I make it through this meet-and-greet without having to throw or take a punch, I might take you up on that. Stick close. If somebody says something else dumb, I’m turning to you.”
“Don’t look now; the ambassador’s coming back.”
“Great.”

A friend of mine had this idea, and I’d love to see it in an urban fantasy: magic is real and it stays secret because it looks like bad CGI. The fakest thing ever.
People who witness magic in person can always have their minds clouded, as they have been for most of human history, but all this newfangled technology has to be handled a different way. A video camera records exactly what it sees.
So, what it sees is … something that looks laughably fake. For any time period. The various secret magicians of the world make a point to keep their spells up to date with the current mundane trends — some of them even have running contests for who can make the most fake-looking spell.
I imagine they have a great time doing it. I sure would.

Is anyone else more entertained than they should be by the vintage 1990′s straight-to-VHS, home shopping network aesthetic of the pinned ad for “Tumblr Ad-Free Browsing”?
Staff 1: “We should advertise this.”
Staff 2: “I can put together something slick and modern.”
Staff 1: “Are you new here? They’d hate that with the power of a thousand suns. No, our only options are retro tackiness or off-the-wall bonkers.”
Staff 2: “I don’t have any ideas for bonkers.”
Staff 1: “Retro it is.”

PoliZ’s WIP Update - 21 Feb 2024
Yet another busy IRL week, which cut into my writing time/energy. I touched 2 fics (1 new work & 1 WIPs) for a total of 1658 words.
On Ao3, I posted:
A Time to Rest - omegaverse platonic Stony ficlet.
Chapter Three of The Sultan’s Gifts - Stuckony Dom/sub PWP.
On Tumblr I posted:
Shooting for the Moon - POV-swapped remix of A Hairy Situation - werewolf!Bucky/no powers!Clint
I’m juggling 17 😬 active/semi-active WIPs with my current deadlines being the Captain Bottom Bingo which wraps at the end of the month.
See below cut for what I’m working on/planning to work on - arranged more or less by bingos/challenges/etc. As always, feel free to send me prompts or plot bunnies as well as asks regarding any of these projects or any other WIPs I’ve got out there. Interaction really helps feed the Muse and keep me motivated!
Tony Stark Bingo Round 7 - [TSB_R7] (ends 15 Feb)
Twenty-eight fills for an assisted blackout plus, thanks to a couple of adopted squares! Masterpost forthcoming!
Stony AUniverse Bingo [SAUB_R1] (ends 15 Feb)
Final count - twenty-one fills for five bingos - hoping this event comes back so I can carry over a couple of squares! Masterpost forthcoming….
* O2 - Omegaverse - posted A Time to Rest as a platonic omegaverse Stony fic inspired by @kandisheek’s lovely art piece that crossed over with my SRB Alpha Steve square. It came in at 333 words.
Captain (America) Bottom Bingo - Round 2 [CABB] (ends 28 Feb 2024)
I signed up for a 3x3 card for this bingo and have six fills, two WIPs and a couple of crossover ideas.
* B2 - FREE - Filled this with Chapter Three of The Sultan’s Gifts which also filled my SRB Multiple Submissives square. It came in at 1033 words.
* B3 - Royal Knight - possibly match up with SRB A5 - Red Skull - jousting competition? (oooh - Steve vs WS!Bucky?)
Post July Break Bingo [JBB_23p] (Ends Apr 2024)
One fill on my 2x3 non-fandom-specific card - still working on potential crossovers.
* A1 - “It’s you. It’s always been you.” - throw into the CABB Royal Knight fic?
* B2 - Character’s personality is split into two different beings – I’ve never played with Bucky & the Soldier being two different people, but this seems like the perfect opportunity! Will see what might be a good crossover on one of my open cards.
* C1 - Touch Starved – another good fit for a Bucky-centric fic. (Steve or Tony or Clint).
* C3 - Bath/shower sex - try matching this up with BaBB February prompt: Morning sex. We’ll see if the Smut Fairy visits within the next week!
Steve Rogers Bingo - Round 3 [SRB_R3] (ends 15 Jun 2024)
Seven fills and one WIP - need to ponder possible crossovers, especially with CABB.
* A1 - Steve can actually dance just fine - Matched this up with the Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF238 Take My Hand] for Finding a Partner - where Steve & Natasha go dancing (potential pre-slash). It came in at 239 words and will post to Ao3 before the event is over.
* B4 - Fix it - See SAUB AU: Canon Divergence
* C5 - Exes to Lovers - crossover with CABB - "B1 - "All I wanted was for you to be happy." – Bucky or Tony as the Ex?
* D1 - Multiple Submissives - see CABB: FREE
Bucky Barnes Connect Four - Alt Jun-iverse [BBC4_R2] {Ends June 2024}
The good folks over at @buckybarnesevents have opened this event up early! You sign up for a single row card of four squares and the challenge is to see if you can combine any/all into a single Bucky-centric AU fanwork - although you can also create 2-4 separate fanworks if you want.
The combo of prompts on my first card [Reality Show, Omegaverse, Talent/Manager, Royalty] sparked an idea that I’m about 230 words + misc notes into already - Alpha!Bucky as a technical prince who gets talked into joining a reality show that is supposed to match him up with an omega… but there’s a twist! Planning to pick this back up in the next week or so.
Hawkeyes Bingo [HB_R2] {Ends TBD}
Just signed up for this fun Tumblr event - got a 3x3 card and and am looking forward to creating more Clint-centric content and trying my hand at a bit of Kate Bishop fic as well!
*A1 - Werewolf AU - wrote Shooting for the Moon - Werewolf!Bucky’s POV on the second half of A Hairy Situation. It came in at 811 words and will get posted to Ao3 sometime in the next couple weeks.
* A3 - Awkward Flirting – this might be a good entry into my first femslash fic with Kate/Yelena?
Build-A-Bucky Bingo [BaBB_R1] {Ends Oct 2024}
Another fun year-long event from the folks at @buckybarnesevents! Each month there’s a list of prompts and you choose (at least) one each month for your card!
* November: Crackfic - DONE
* December: Wingman - DONE
* January: Wingfic - DONE
*January: Polyamory - DONE
* February - Fingering - DONE
Warm and Fluffy Bingo [WFB] (no end date)
Four fills on my card, courtesy of @warmandfluffybingocards - need to try for another crossover or two!

On other creative fronts: I am working on a Hades (disney) figure as a commission; I finished my last Marvel Trumps Hate figure: Captain Rambeau aka Photon.
If you’re looking for one of a kind gifts for birthdays or other celebrations, check out Stuffed With Character over on Facebook for a full list of my designs (now over 150!). These soft stuffed figures are mostly Marvel and monsters, but I have some Star Wars, Star Trek, DC and Disney figures as well. Plus I love to take custom design requests for any fandom!

CYL 7 results reaction time!!
✨Congrats to darling Soren✨, he’s high up on my personal list of fictional characters that have moved me the most and this’s a dumb little thing that’s making me very happy :’)
1 - I have no strong feelings about Robin (and Corrin), good for them, I know they’re beloved by many
2 - Genuinely...not sure who was voting for Gullveig? Like she hasn’t...done anything yet. But ok.
4 - I do genuinely send condolences for people who wanted Felix to get a spot, he’s even in top 4, and actually he’s another character I like an awful lot. I’ve just spent so much time actually playing Three Houses I care less about 3H characters getting spotlit in FEH. But I’ll bet out of everyone he’ll hold his own next year against the new Engage characters.
9 - Azura’s the next highest up character I’d actually want to have win, but she’s already got a bunch of good alts, her winning cyl doesn’t feel urgent
12&13 - will the Askr sibs ever get their due
16 - ...yeah I do actually care about Yuri too
25&26 - I felt like Shez had a real shot at taking a top spot. Their success might bode well for the FEW twins tho? Maybe? I can dream
27 - I’d be pretty chuffed in Lyon won next year, but he’s been consistently in a spot like this
34 - Nino hangin in there, nice, nice
41 - (Bingo pick) SHOCKED this is the highest of my bingo picks on the list, but I do think Sonia’s a very well-written and compelling character, so, yay? I put her on my bingo card cuz I want a resplendent to replace the art I don’t care for, but...an alt would be cool too I guess. Morph rights?
49 - Mercy made it to top 50!
54 - Lin not doing too bad. Honestly if he were a bit higher I might vote for him...
57 - Ok I do actually have strong feelings about Ninian, I wish she were higher
79 - Pouring one out for the Scarlet stans. We just got a Fates banner that was all characters we already had, but I think this is the year Scarlet gets in.
80 - Was Desaix a meme? Did I miss something? Does this have to do with us running out of Echoes characters? Where’s Jesse??
94 - If we get Tormod we have to get Muarim, right?
95 - A not-bad Seth would be good ngl
100 - Let’s see who’s at 100...oh Sakura, cool.
104 - (Bingo pick) I think I put Stefan on my 2023 bingo card, but in retrospect I would’ve swapped him for Roland
107 - I’m still pretty fond of Henry and he doesn’t have a unit that I love to use yet
123 - (Bingo pick) Vanessa! Glad she’s even this high
128 - Again would love a Niles unit that’s actually fun to use
168 - Florina does already have a nice alt but I wouldn’t say no to another
172 - (Bingo pick) Not bad Lucius!! I might vote for him next year, just to boost his numbers, since I’m not trying to have anyone else win :’)
186 - Would REALLY like a viable unit for Kaze, wish he’d been on that new Devotion banner
194 - As much as I despise Nergal, it’s in the fun is-a-good-villain way, so I’d be pretty excited if he got in
196 - Abysskeeper meme dropping, you love to see it
199 - I like Dagr a lot, I hope she hangs in there
204 - I defo want Janaff in feh, the more bird units the better
211 - *waves at Canas*
224 - you know me I wouldn’t say no to another Naesala alt
227 - (Bingo pick) Ismaire! I want all the unrepresented moms to get in
227 - gee an alt for Cormag would be nice...
229 - Is this the year that Xane gets a base? almost certainly not
238 - (Bingo pick) if Cormag got an alt at the same time his brother gets in, that’d be pretty cool...
239 - (Bingo pick) Izana...my bingo picks are pretty low down huh
257 - (Bingo pick) Not bad for an NPC, Uther
258 - So Jesse, your thoughts on the Desaix situation?
262 - (Bingo pick) I guess this isn’t so far down for Elffin...
272 - (Bingo pick) And here’s Edain
273 - Wait Valter is lower than Cormag AND Glen??? Why did he beat Cormag in the voting gauntlet then????
274 - (Bingo pick) :( I wish Artur was higher
275 - Man Dwyer fell after getting in. That’s how it goes though.
276 - I guess that staff!Libra dream remains far off...
284 - (Bingo pick) Elena!! out of all the dead moms I want her to get in the most
285 - (Bingo pick) And not too far from Artur we have my other beloved red-haired softboi healer
285 - ...tied with my darling Limstella. I’ll probably spare them at least a vote next year since I won’t be fighting tooth and nail to have a fav take a top spot.
294 - This is the year of a Reyson alt. I’ll just keep telling myself that.
301 - (Bingo pick) aaaand Midir not quite getting into the top 300. Oh well, could be worse...
301 - Two words: Summer Knoll. Let’s make it happen.
311 - (Bingo pick) Oh here’s Ephidel. I’ll consider it a win that Limstella’s already in feh and Eph isn’t and Limstella’s still beating him.
316 - (Bingo pick) hi Harken
321 - Wait...why is Linus so much further down than Lloyd?? Because he’s a hothead? I thought people liked that
327 - (Bingo pick) :( I need any Muarim that isn’t a sad fallen...
333 - (Bingo pick) Let’s see if any of my picks are lower than Ulki...
339 & 340 - kinda weird the two unrelated Arthurs ended up so near each other
357 - Ah here’s Roland, not technically on my bingo card but only because I forgot to put him on.
362 - I’d really like a wyvern-rider Petrine, the fact that she’s on a horse in feh is kinda ridiculous
365 - Please get Saleh out of bunnysuit hell
373 - Huh, I thought Harken was so low because FE7 Karel would be beating him, but I guess not...
376 - As much as I would love to see adorable FE7 baby Guinivere, I don’t trust feh to handle that tactfully
376 - Would love Eliwood’s dad to get in
404 - I think Rafiel was higher than Reyson last year, so...good for Reyson I guess?
And then the bottom of the list is exactly what you’d expect, a bunch of detestable villains - for once no character who was just kinda tragically sidelined.
So...cool! Based on all that...Next year I’ll probably vote for Lucius and Reyson to raise their stock, since they might actually get alts, while I don’t have super high hopes for Limstella. Although, with Sonia doing this good, who knows? Maybe we could get a full morph banner? Listen I can dream.
All of that is UNLESS: 1) Ninian starts doing unexpectedly well next year or 2) Alcryst and/or Mauvier, and/or whoever I end up liking more long term from Engage, have a shot at a top spot
But it’s nice to think next year I won’t have as much stake in things. Again, wishing everyone the best, even if your fav didn’t win I hope all your favs get cool alts with strong skills and beautiful art!

Headcanon time!
So Byleth and Jeralt share this knotwork design on their clothing, so I decided it was time to make that significant.
While knotwork commonly appears cross Fódlan, the intricacies of the tradition vary across the continent (and to a certain extent Adrestia has abandoned knotwork design over the years, but that's not of import).
This particular type of knotwork is Faerghal in origin and was popular around a century ago mostly in northern Faerghus. It is called "Familial knotwork" and named as such because it was knotwork designed to identify members of families. The theory was that even simple designs would vary enough that families could put them on gravestones or put them on clothes to identify who was who at a glance. They weren't always non-objective as some chose to have their knots within the outline of an animal or making the shape of one. The practice is not dead in Fearghus but it certainly is less popular than it used to be, and mostly that can be chalked up to Faerghal knotwork drifting towards a more free-flowing, complex style.
What Jeralt and Byleth wear is the knotwork style of the Eisner family who were once very minor lords in Charon who had ties to the knights of the Kingdom and the Church. Pretty much the whole family was somewhere in the military, maybe the clergy, or the current head of the house. Jeralt was an only child when Rhea saved him so needless to say the House is either defunct or has passed to extended family.
Jeralt kept the knotwork though and has worn it on his person for his entire life, and sewed it into Byleth's coat himself. Jeralt's Mercenary company is identified by that knotwork. All members have the knotwork somewhere on their person, and people in the know recognize that symbol pretty easily if they spot it. Try to copy it at your own peril because the company treats the knotwork with great respect. They stuck to the old tradition that one has to be gifted the honor of wearing the knotwork by the head of the family. All of the Mercenaries can tell you that they had to earn their right to be fully recognized members, and many didn't have the mark for months if not over a year into joining with the group. It's one of the reasons Jeralt's Company is regarded as a very small but exceptionally skilled group of mercs because the Company truly is a family, and they're very careful with who the accept into that family.

One of the most interesting aspects of long lived mortal races in fiction I think is overlooked a bit is the sheer different understanding of time itself between them and let's say Humans.
If you have a race that lives to even 200 years old that's still a century more than humans are able to live with modern medicine and life expectancies. To put dates on it a character could be born in 1821 and die around 2021, and if they reach maturity at a similar age to humans (around 20 years let's say) they will have experienced everything that has happened between those two dates as ADULTS for the majority of it. This races' cultural perception of time would be completely different to that of Humans. Even different cultures here on Earth have different perceptions of "a long time ago" but living an extra century, at least, would bump that up by 100%.
What would be "a long time ago" to them? What would be "rapid change" to them? What would be their understanding of "generations?" What would be "wasted time?" What would be "experienced" to them? etc etc.
Their perception of time in the eyes of Humans would be incrediblely wonky to say the least. To them someone dying at 70 would be too young and a tragedy, but to Humans it would be around a normal age to die. Someone being in a position for a decade or two would be surprising to Humans, but might be really normal for a long lived race. Things that take multiple years to do may be daunting to Humans, but be understandable to a long lived race and not that long at all to them. Cultural change in these societies may seem to be really really slow from the outside, but to them a cultural shift being done in 50 years would be extremely fast.
Like, if a race can live for thousands of years is it really ok to say that if something happened to that race 1,000 years it doesn't matter even though those affected are still very much alive (and may have not recovered) because Humans find that to be an absurdly long time ago? What if they only live for around 300 years, but things that happened 1000 years ago directly affected their parents or grandparents?
If these long lived people lived and integrated themselves into societies where the majority lives far shorter lives than they do, and a few found their way into positions of power, staying in those positions for a longer time than Humans normally do, would that be wrong? Would Humans misunderstand their intentions? What if that long lived person just wanted to help the place they call home and the people they call friends and family, so stayed in that position for as long as they could?
How long would a long lived person or family live somewhere where the vast society around them changes and does far quicker than they do? How would their friends and family living shorter lives honestly affect them? Would they choose to return to the society of their race and to a time scale that makes sense to them, or stay? What if they can't return for some reason even if they wanted to?
What of those born into a society that lives shorter lives? Would they adapt the cultural perception of time of the society around them regardless of how long they live?
What if this race is disparate? Would they form a society with shorter lives races around them? Would they instead form pockets where they are the majority because of the sheer difference in time lived?
I could go on and on because this is just fascinating to me, and unfortunately I don't see many people really engaging with that aspect of worldbuilding a lot. Especially in fandom discussions about things I think we default to our own understanding of time and forget that long lived races would experience it differently than us. Idk maybe I think about this a lot because Manaketes, the Nabataeans, Altmer, etc are often my favorite races, and that aspect of their worldbuilding gets ignored when we talk about characters belonging to those races and their reactions to things that happened "a long time ago" to us. Not saying everyone does but it's easy to not consider because "how does this race even perceive time" is probably not on peoples minds when discussing things.

A Second Decade of Movies
Ten years ago on Facebook, I compiled a list of every movie I watched, in order, from the first decade of the network’s existence. Now, here’s part two, covering the years 2010-2019. There are 754 titles below, though some are repeat viewings. The movie I watched the most? Harold Lloyd in “The Freshman.” My favorite movie from the last decade? “The Tree of Life.”
But I began the 2010s with James Cameron’s mega-hit “Avatar.” I’ll go on record saying the movie is still enjoyable ten years later, as I watched it again in 2019 with my kids to prep for visiting the World of Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But--I also agree with those who say there’s little remembered from the film in the culture today. Can you name the stars? Recount the plot in detail? Mostly what we remember from the film is the spectacle of it all, game-changing when it was released in 2009.
At any rate, enjoy the list below! If a title is hotlinked, it will take you to an essay, interview, or related coverage on the film by yours truly.

Mature
239 words, stand-alone
To be clear, this is NOT mature content! At least not in this universe...
This was written a while back, during flash fiction month, after the mature content bot struck an art reblog on my main (this one if you’re curious). I decided to take inspiration :D
Critique is welcome!
"Outrageous…"
"Has someone called the police?"
"Unbelievable…"
Flick walked down the street, fully aware of the looks they drew. The greenish glow under their skin showed around their ears, eyes, and fingertips, and lit up the roots of their hair. They were done hiding as if it was something shameful. They were done pretending to be like everyone else.
"Don’t look, baby…"
"Has anyone called the police?!"
"Flaunting their magic in public like there’s no other people in the world…"
Flick resisted the urge to pull their hands back into their sleeves, to pull their hood over their head. No, not this time. It wasn’t their fault. There was nothing wrong with it.
They repeated it to themselves, trying to keep their step steady amongst the hostile looks and whispers.
Until someone stepped in their way.
Flick raised their head, their heartbeat picking up. Before them stood a man, at least two heads taller than them, long black hair half-hiding his face.
Flick froze, their breath catching in their throat. It had been a bad idea they should never have why couldn’t they just keep it in like they were supposed -
The man raised his hands.
Pulled off a glove.
Showed his fingertips, shimmering ocean blue.
He pulled back his hair, and Flick saw he was just as afraid as them, and now, just as luminous.
He nodded to them. Flick nodded back, and they walked on together.
