"So what I think is happening is that they're finding out what being a human really means."
"Which is?"
"That you're not as much in control as you think."

Just finished the annual watching of Hogfather, and of course I thought about Good Omens, and not just because Terry has a cameo role and it makes me think of how he and Neil aren't eating sushi together in S1. 😭
No, I'm thinking of the Book of Life and the Auditors. Because the debate rages (or, at least, grumbles) about whether the Book of Life is even real, or if it's just the Metatron talking out his ass.
The idea of something or someone that can not only kill you but make it so you never were is not unique. I'm sure we could find any number of fantasy/horror/sci-fi tales that incorporate that premise. However (and I could be wrong here, especially since I can't do graphic novels and so am not versed in Sandman), I don't recall it coming up in Neil's work?
But the Auditors in Hogfather have exactly that power. "If they catch him, he won't just die. He will never have been." (From the TV adaptation.)
The biblical Book of Life doesn't seem to have this power. From what I can tell (as neither a Christian nor a biblical scholar), if you are blotted out of the Book of Life, you will be cast into a lake of fire and not taken into Heaven during the final judgement. But not made to have never been. So we're firmly into bible fanfic here.
Hogfather came out in 1996, a few years after Neil and Terry plotted the unwritten sequel to Good Omens. The ideas for that story were likely fairly fresh in Terry's head when he was writing Hogfather. There are a few options for what this all means.
1. The BoL and the Auditors are not related. Neil and Terry both grabbed the same trope independently, down to using similar language in how it's described. Possible, but the least likely in my head.
2. The BoL and the Auditors are related but in the way that Neil borrowed an existing Pratchian idea when writing S2 to bring more of Terry's voice in. This probably wouldn't impact whether the BoL was real or not.
3. The BoL concept was borrowed by Terry based on plans for the GO sequel and used for the Auditors. It is a real threat in Hogfather (or, at least Death claims it is and there's no reason to disbelieve him). If so, that would definitely tip the scales toward the BoL being a real threat that will show up more in S3.

You may think of us as... the Auditors.
Really? What do you audit?
Everything. We maintain the logical order of the universe.

"this old man should assist me because he will die soon in any case.”
There was silence.
“Accurate yet unnecessary,” said Lu-Tze.

The more I read, the more I identify with Unity. Which I'm getting a sense is going to be a little unfortunate for me down the line...

LORD, WE KNOW THERE IS NO GOOD ORDER EXCEPT THAT WHICH WE CREATE...
Azrael's expression did not change.
THERE IS NO HOPE BUT US. THERE IS NO MERCY BUT US. THERE IS NO JUSTICE. THERE IS JUST US.
The dark, sad face filled the sky.
ALL THINGS THAT ARE, ARE OURS. BUT WE MUST CARE. FOR IF WE DO NOT CARE, WE DO NOT EXIST. IF WE DO NOT EXIST, THEN THERE IS NOTHING BUT BLIND OBLIVION.
AND EVEN OBLIVION MUST END SOME DAY. LORD, WILL YOU GRANT ME JUST A LITTLE TIME? FOR THE PROPER BALANCE OF THINGS. TO RETURN WHAT WAS GIVEN. FOR THE SAKE OF PRISONERS AND THE FLIGHT OF THE BIRDS.
Death took a step backward.
It was impossible to read expression in Azrael's features.
Death glanced sideways at the servants.
LORD, WHAT CAN THE HARVEST HOPE FOR, IF NOT FOR THE CARE OF THE REAPER MAN?

If it weren't for the legs and feet, this'd be a picture of The Auditors of Reality. I wonder if Terry Pratchett had this in mind while writing about them?
