Fic: The Day-Drinking, Sugar-Baby Detective Agency

This unrepentant piece of crack is for @ellebeesknees​ for her birthday.  Based on a convo about these assholes:

And how they’d fuck their way to the top and then get bored without mental stimulation.

"Can I be offended if I think she's cheating on me?" Bucky asked, balancing his phone between his ear and his shoulder as he poured a splash more rum into his mojito.

"Rum makes you maudlin," Loki reminded him, his voice tinny over speakerphone.  There was the sound of water sloshing in the background, so either he was taking a bath, already by the pool, or his drink was larger than Bucky's was.

"And vodka makes me paranoid."

"So drink a beer."

"I haven't had vodka today," Bucky pointed out.  "What I've had is no sex in 13 days and one obligatory phone call.  If she's not cheating on me -- and her husband -- then she's rapidly losing interest."

There was a shhhhlct sound over the phone.

"Are you shaving?" Bucky asked in disbelief.

"Maybe some of us have let ourselves go," Loki pointed out in a dispassionately catty tone.  "But not all of us have the luxury of not putting in the effort daily."

"Ok, whatever," Bucky rolled his eyes. "You know half of it you do for your own exacting preferences."  It was an odd friendship between them borne from a game of 'younger relative or paid entertainment' played during a tediously monotonous party.

"Not all of us can get away with just trimming our pubes so our dicks look bigger and more uniform."

"Yeah, but not all of us get to just lie there and take it."

Loki was silent for a moment and then changed the subject, more of a sign that he was acknowledging the accuracy of that statement than verbally agreeing would be. "Do you have a back up plan if this goes south?"

"I have three.  Lady Platten thinks I'm sweet."

Loki snorted.  "All her wealth is tied into her late husband's estate."

Well. Not everyone could have a back up plan that included moving back into their childhood bedroom and still maintain their lifestyle.  If Bucky was on his own he'd have to rely on his one published book to support him. He'd be living in a studio apartment and eating ramen in no time.

"Maybe I'll see if your mom wants company,” he told Loki.

"It'd be good for her," Loki agreed.  "I will pay you to seduce my mother from my own trust fund."

Bucky made a face. That backfired.

Loki called Bucky often, but he rarely called Bucky and demanded that he come over immediately for an emergency.  Loki might be dramatic but he also liked his space, and he definitely wasn’t the type who needed suggestions on what to wear, so Bucky found himself responding by driving over to the large house in the richer part of town.  Where they lived, parts of town were rich.  

"What is it?" Bucky hissed after Loki gestured for him to be quiet the moment he opened the ornate door.

"Shut up," Loki said in a normal voice and then pulled Bucky through the door. He hadn't been to Loki's lover's house often.  It was a huge monstrosity that made Bucky think of dick comparisons. His girlfriend's dick was smaller than Loki's boyfriend's.  Loki's family had the biggest dick of all.  It wasn’t really a secret that most of society figured Loki was slumming.  "He's dead," Loki said, slamming the door behind him.

"Who?" Bucky asked in concern, his tone softening.  Loki didn't get along with his family, but Bucky thought it was because he cared too much in an odd way.  If someone was dead then Loki would be distraught, and it definitely explained why he’d call Bucky over.  “Your father.”

"No," Loki corrected him impatiently.  "He's dead."

Then he gestured across the open marble entryway into the living room, where there was a dead body very visible even from this distance.  It took Bucky eighteen steps to cross over and look into the room. Then he stared at the body lying face down on the ground, completely naked.  Blood had soaked through into the lush carpet, and it was dark as though it had time to dry.  "Oh." Bucky said, and thought about how he could use this for his next book. "Gross."

“Gross?” Loki echoed, incredulously.  “You’re the one who wrote about someone being impaled.  I figured you’d be better with blood.”

“I didn’t realize you read my book,” he responded, walking around the body, careful not to touch the blood.  “Did you check for a pulse?”

“Be more helpful,” Loki snapped.  

“I didn’t even realize he could die,” Bucky pointed out, skirting the blood splatter. “He always seemed like the kind of asshole who could live forever.”

“I was here,” Loki said, his wringing his hands in that subconscious way he did when he actually was upset.  “We fucked this morning, and when I finished showering he was gone, so I took a nap.”

“For 8 hours?”

“I know what it looks like,” Loki answered.  “I didn’t do it.” He grabbed Bucky’s arm.  “I’m not lying.  You need to help me hide the body.”

Bucky considered that, rationally.  He looked down at the body. He looked at the stained white carpet.  He thought of the amount of staff wandering around the building. “We need to call the police.”

“No,” Loki said.

Lieutenant Steve Rogers had a soft, sympathetic face.  He didn’t blink when Loki bluntly said that the dead man was his sugar daddy, a term neither of them particularly used often because they weren’t into the kink of the term.  He also didn’t treat either of them differently afterwards as he took their statements.  His partner was a lot less respectful.

“I’ll be honest,” he told Loki after closing his notebook.  The body had been removed from the room by the ME’s office. Bucky had heard someone mention that it looked like a poker from the ornate fireplace was missing.  “It doesn’t look good for you.  It would be wise if you started looking for a lawyer. A good one.”

Loki started laughing.  He stood and paced over to the wetbar and poured himself a healthy sized drink, downing it in a few smooth gulps.  “A good lawyer,” he repeated, and poured himself another glass.

Officer Rogers raised an eyebrow towards Bucky.

“His brother is Thor Odinson,” Bucky inserted.

It was the first time Lieutenant Rogers reacted to anything outwardly.  “I know Thor,” he said.

“I imagine all of you know Thor,” Loki answered, saluting both of them with his half-full tumbler before drinking that glass down as well.

Loki showed up at Bucky’s condo holding four shopping bags and wearing a scowl. “I just came from Odinson’s office,” he said, pushing his way through the door.  He continued walking across the living room and down the hallway, dumping his bags in the spare room he sometimes slept in while drunk.

“It looks like you just came from Macy’s,” Bucky said.

Loki sneered like Bucky had said ‘Walmart’. “Yes, well, half my credit cards are currently frozen, and I’m not allowed back in the house.  I’ll need clothes, and excuse me but I’m not wearing your spare pyjamas.”

Bucky had thought Loki would go home, not squat in his spare bedroom.  “What did your lawyer say?” he ventured, sure Loki’s black mood couldn’t get any worse.

“After he finished laughing?” Loki snapped. “He told me I was screwed in a cheerful tone and then told me he’d save me in trial.”

Thor Odinson was one of the best defense lawyers in the country.  Every time they were in the same room as each other, Loki verbally decimated him.

“Which means,” Loki continued in his sly, but stubborn tone.  It was the same voice he used when he was plotting out which rich person he was going to seduce next.  Bucky had a bad feeling about this.  “I’ll have to make sure this never goes to trial.  The police are useless, so I’ll have to solve it myself.”

Yep. There it was.

Being Loki’s roommate in a one-bathroom condo was an arduous experience.  He had a nightly routine and a morning routine, and in between both Bucky had been sleeping.  Bucky felt like he was going to spend his life in a perpetual state of needing to piss and getting beat to the bathroom.  He may as well be living with Becca.

“Ok,” Bucky said, uncapping the top of a whiteboard marker.  He wrote “poker?” on the glass door leading out to his balcony.  He’d been using the surface to plot out his second book, but it had been 6 months since he’d looked at it.  “Did you notice it was missing?” he asked.  Loki was just finishing making a batch of mimosas for their breakfast.

“Of course I did,” Loki said.  “Someone gets stabbed and the first thing people do is look around for a weapon. There weren’t many other things in the room that could break skin.”

Bucky wrote the word Weapon on top of poker. He then stepped a foot over and wrote Motive? on the glass.  Then below that he put Money? and then Enemies?

“Rich people always have enemies.  I didn’t pay that much attention.”

“Ok,” Bucky said, and circled the word poker.  “How are we going to find this, then?”

“I have some ideas.”

Bucky had to call Lieutenant Rogers after the two of them found the missing poker in a dumpster two miles away from the house.  Bucky couldn’t smell anything but garbage, his pants were covered in something noxious, and his white sneakers were stained with muddy water and grosser things.  He’d probably need to take 8 showers and bathe in tomato juice just to smell normal again.

Loki looked just as awful as he did, but he also looked unbearably pleased with himself. Bucky had no idea how Loki lived the kind of charmed life that meant stubborn perseverance and a half-witted idea actually payed off.

“I’d ask how you knew,” Rogers said, observing the two of them as someone wrapped the poker in plastic behind him and started processing the scene.  “But the two of you look like you’ve spent the day poking your heads in dumpsters.”

“Fascinating,” Loki replied in a deadpan.  “You have basic observational skills.” Then his eyes narrowed at the alley entrance where an attractive man in an expensive suit was loitering. “Excuse me.”

“Don’t mind Loki,” Bucky told Lieutenant Rogers.  “That’s just his personality. It grows on you.”

“I’m glad you called me,” Lieutenant Rogers said, and his handsome face looked so earnest that Bucky couldn’t take the words as anything other than genuine.  “I didn’t expect you to keep the card.”

That had been one fight Loki lost, and Bucky figured the only reason he’d capitulated to calling the cops was how bad it would look if he took the poker himself. The cops had access to fingerprint databases and the like.  “A handsome man like you?” Bucky asked and grinned.

Lieutenant Rogers blushed.  “If I warned the two of you off of investigating this on your own, would you listen?”

Bucky didn’t bother denying it.  He looked at Loki, who was leaning close to his brother and had his ‘mean and baiting’ expression on his face.  Bucky had seen Loki in action when he’d been trying to secure himself a boyfriend higher in society the year before.  He’d seen a lot of expressions. “No, sorry.”

Bucky returned from visiting his girlfriend to find Loki sitting on the couch looking at printouts from something that was clearly pictures he’d taken from his phone. Mentally, Bucky sighed, and wondered if he wanted to ask.

“What are those?” he asked.

“The Grandmaster’s ledger,” Loki said, sipping at his drink and crossing his legs casually.  “He wasn’t very good at keeping records.  I’ve already picked out four discrepancies, and I’m only on page 13.  I think his accountant was stealing 0.5% a month. Not enough to really raise red flags, but enough to afford a nicer apartment.  Good for him.”

Sometimes Bucky forgot that the reason they got along was that they were both more intelligent than the people around them, but then Loki never really let anyone forget that he was singular.  “Did you break into the house?”

“I have a key,” Loki pointed out in a clear ‘these incompetent idiots didn’t change the locks’ tone.  “It’s hardly breaking in.”

God, they were both going to go to jail.  Bucky sighed out loud. “We should tell the police.”

“You can tell Lieutenant Sexy if you want.” Loki gave him a knowing look and took another sip from his drink.  “I haven’t found anything that points to a reason for murder.  If anything, I’ve just found a lot of reasons to keep the man alive for as long as possible.”

Bucky pulled out his phone so he could give Lieutenant Sexy a call.  That name was definitely going to stick.  “It hardly points to murder,” Rogers said once he heard Bucky out.  Loki’s face did his insufferably smug expression that made Bucky grit his teeth. “But there might be something there.  Can Loki provide me with the combination for the safe?”

Bucky looked at Loki.  “Numerical representations on a keypad of the words Purple Rain,” Loki said in a bored tone.

“I’m on speaker?” Rogers inquired, and Bucky could almost hear the raised eyebrow. “Stay out of the house, Loki.”

“Absolutely, Lieutenant Sexy,” Loki said.  “Best behaviour, cross my heart.”

“Goodbye, Bucky,” Rogers said, and it sounded like he was trying not to laugh. Bucky liked him a bit more for that.

“So that’s your type,” Loki mused once Bucky hung up the phone.  “Rich women and men who know how to use their guns.”

Bucky made the unfortunate discovery the next day that Loki’s type was Thor Odinson. The sight of them making out on Bucky’s couch would forever be seared into his eyelids.

Bucky didn’t think it was a good idea to go to the funeral, but Loki lived for drama, and Bucky secretly enjoyed drama, and so the two of them put on their nicest suits and went to the party.

The night was kind of a blur of the two of them being side-eyed, alcohol, and Loki elbowing someone so hard in the solar plexus it sounded like a rib cracked. After that, he had no idea how he ended up pressed against his best friend’s side in the back of Lieutenant Sexy’s police car.  Bucky feared he might have called the man.  His crush was becoming detrimental to his lifestyle.

“It’s natural to be upset,” Lieutenant Rogers said to Loki.  “Just stop maiming people who call you a murderer, and everything might be ok.”

“I’m not upset,” Loki corrected.  “I’m inconvenienced.  The old bastard had to go get murdered before I could move on.”

“We’re considering money as a motive.”

Loki visibly rolled his eyes.  Bucky could feel it.

“Which means,” Lieutenant Rogers continued with a sharper tone.  “You’ve moved down the suspect list.  Your personal net worth is only about ten million less than your boyfriend’s had been.”

Only? Christ.  How rich was Loki?

Lieutenant Rogers and Bucky’s eyes met in the rear-view mirror and they shared a ‘can you believe that ridiculous sentence?’ moment.

On day seven of staring at the whiteboard, Bucky had an epiphany.  Loki had just emerged from the bathroom, and the living room smelled of steam, his shampoo, and enough body lotion to drown a small child.

Bucky had ended up pissing in the kitchen sink, and he was pretty furious about it. Not that he ever washed dishes, but that wasn’t the point.

“Maybe we’re thinking about this wrong?” Bucky suggested as he stared the murder board with a scowl.  The word Weapon and Motive were blurring together.  “What if Jeff Goldblum wasn’t the target?”

“Who do you suggest, then?” Loki asked, pursing his lips.  The drink in his hand went mostly untouched.  “Me?”

Bucky raised his eyebrows.  “To ruin you and get you sent to jail? Yeah, that could be a motive.”

“Ah.” Loki considered it.  It looked like he was doing complex math in his head, like the meme.  “Call Lieutenant Sexy.  I know who did it, then.”

“I’m single,” Bucky blurted out over the phone when Lieutenant Rogers personally called him to let him know Loki’s suggestions had panned out.  “I mean, I have a girlfriend who bought me my condo and who expects me to service her once a week, but for the rest of the time I’m single.”

“Oh,” Rogers answered, sounding surprised.  “I didn’t realize you were interested in men.”

“I’m more nuanced than that,” Bucky said.  Mostly he just liked people who could protect him.  It wasn’t that nuanced at all.  “Do you want to go out sometime?”

“Sure,” Rogers answered, which also surprised Bucky, because he’d basically outright outlined the fact that he wouldn’t be giving up his lifestyle in order to date and Lieutenant Sexy was ok with that.  “Do you like mini golf?”

“I’m crap at it,” Bucky said.

“Me too, but the place here has the best ice cream and a nice view of the ocean.”

“I love ice cream,” Bucky replied with a grin he could feel in his cheeks.

“I’m off on Tuesday,” Rogers replied.

“Tuesday it is, then.”

“I’m moving in with my brother,” Loki told him, throwing all his new clothing into a plastic bag.  “Give these to charity,” he said, then looked Bucky up and down.  “Or keep them.”

Bucky rolled his eyes and wondered: Was Thor the love of Loki’s life or another sugar daddy to piss his family off?

He also wondered if Loki even knew.

“Don’t think about it too hard,” Loki replied.  “I’ll pick you up tomorrow at 4pm—” which was practically mid-morning for them.  “We’ll go see who else your girlfriend is up to.”

“I’ve never been on a stakeout before,” Bucky mused.  “And we are good at this.”

“If we can solve a murder, an adulteress should be simple.” Then Loki grinned, sly and like he was enjoying himself.  “Bring drinks.”

like in my baby sister hcs, you’re still the most important thing to him period

the two of you got picked up by dazai and kunikida when he was 18 (obviously) and when you were 12

for a 12 year old, you were a bit small bc of malnourishment (which makes atsushi feel so bad) so both dazai and kunikida thought you were a bit younger than you actually were

they assumed you were about 9-10ish

you and atsushi both share a favorite food !! chazuke :)

so when kunikida treated the two of you, he made sure you got more bowls bc like i mentioned above, he feels really bad that you were malnourished and under weight

(don’t bring this up but kunikida felt bad too hehe)

when dazai went with your brother to the warehouse, you were with kunikida

imagine the surprise of the other ada members when kunikida came in with a little girl dressed in rags that popped out from behind him

kenji was the one who vocalized his thoughts 

“kunikida-san you have a daughter?! wow! i didn’t know that! :D”

when you found out your brother was a tiger, you were a bit concerned but you were actually kind of excited

you were even more excited when you found out the two of you were going to be taken in by the agency

anything was better than the stupid orphanage

and besides!

you got a tiger for an older brother and a bunch of other super powered agents to take care of you! who could want anything else?

at your age, you’re very impressionable and can be influenced easily so atsushi makes sure to teach you more in depth of good morals and the importance of kindness

his heart swells with pride and relief when he catches you being kind to others

pride bc he’s proud that even after all the two of you have gone through, you still ended up being a good kid and having a bright view of the world

and relief bc he hasn’t failed as a big brother

but please, from time to time reassure him that he’s perfect and the only big brother that you’d ever want bc he rlly needs that kind of validation

with his salary and savings, he tries to buy nice things for you

atsushi is your big brother, but kunikida is most definitely some sort of father figure

kunikida scolds you lightly if he thinks your manners need work or if you make a mess in the agency

you listen to him of course and in turn as some sort of a reward, he’ll give you pieces of stationary

he always gives you the nice, good quality kind and you’re over the moon

atsushi adores it when you come running to him showing your new notebook or fountain pen and blabbering what you’re going to do with it

sometimes it isn’t even as a reward for being a good child; he’ll just give it to you and he’ll say smth like “i noticed you’ve used up your last notebook quite quickly, so here’s another one” or “did you run out of ink? here have this then”

he usually has a soft spot for children in general, but he most definitely has a soft spot (or a thousand) for you

yosano is kind of like a motherly figure to you

she gives you the guidance a mother should and goes on shopping trips with you!

atsushi always gets dragged along by you, but he thinks it’s worth it seeing you look so happy

yosano being a doctor also tries to teach the things you should know, or things that would be helpful to you

she’ll teach you the basics of cooking, sewing, how to treat a cold/fever, etc

also gives you excellent advice 1000% of the time

fukuzawa is like a father to most in the agency but you see him more as a grandfather figure

most of the time though, it’s just you talking and him listening to you, but the two of you enjoy it nonetheless

“and then kunikida-san ended up crashing into a pole and dazai-san started to laugh at him and i did too because it was really funny but we ended up getting scolded—”

he’ll let you stay in his office as he fills out paperwork; you’re usually doodling or drawing in your notebooks

sometimes he’ll meditate and you’ll join him, but 4/7 times you’d fall asleep

you always wake up with a blanket over you

dazai is like a cool but a highly concerning and kind of high maintenance uncle

frequently takes you out with him when he ditches work

walks in the park, eating at uzumaki so he has the excuse of treating you so he doesn’t have to pay his tab avoiding kunikida and sometimes chuuya and akutagawa, all that fun stuff

also tries to not talk abt suicide in front of you especially if it’s just the two of you alone

he knows that you mean the world to his pupil and that said pupil would probably hate him for putting suicide inside your brain

he teaches you random but useful things like how to pick a lock, how to steal kunikida’s notebook if you’re looking for some information, how to sweet talk your way out of things, etc.

is also the one to tell you that if you ever get a significant other to introduce them to the agency first

he always wants all of your gossip; some of them work pretty well for blackmail

“dazai-san! dazai-san! did you know that kunikida-san lost his glasses and he was looking for them for nearly an hour when he was just holding them the entire time??”

“woah really (y/n)-chan?! hey hey can you say it again into this recording device so kunikida-kun would believe me when i tell him—”

always ends up giving kunikida a heart attack when he says that you’ve been with him all day

ranpo is also like a cool but a highly concerning and kind of high maintenance uncle

will share some of his snacks, but don’t push it or you might not get anything at all

loves it when you compliment him

if you tagged along with him and your brother on a case, he will show off to impress you

atsushi is lowkey and kunikida is highkey stressed that ranpo’s eating habits will rub off on you

ranpo definitely does stuff like that on purpose 

the tanizakis are like siblings to you!

a weird set of siblings but siblings nonetheless

the two of them adore you and think you’re precious

atsushi definitely knows how to do your hair whether it’s long or short but he got even better at it when he asked the two

hehe braid trains are definitely a thing + kyouka and kenji (and maybe even dazai)

sometimes you have sibling swap days

you’re with junichiro for most of the day and atsushi is with naomi

strange i know

each of the tanizaki siblings try to make it fun bc they know that the two of you did not at all have a happy upbringing

junichiro likes spending time with you by taking you out to different places that naomi likes to frequent

like the mall, different stores and restaurants, the park, places like those

naomi does the same thing with atsushi so if you ever bump into them, you go out and eat together :)

besides atsushi, the next one in line who spoils you the most would be junichiro (and yosano & kunikida both coming in at a close third)

he honestly can’t help it; you remind him of how naomi was when she was younger

and besides

he’s always been a sucker when it came to the happiness of a little sister

“would you really buy this for me junichiro-san?!”

“of course! don’t worry about it” :)

wanna talk abt boys/girls/celebrity crushes things like that? naomi is your girl

you feel a bit embarrassed to go talking to yosano or your brother abt that and kyouka does not know a thing abt them either

“uwahh naomi-san look at all these people in this magazine! they look so good!”

“right?! but of course onii-sama is still the best—”

you get along with kenji and kyouka quite nicely being roughly the same age as them; they’re also like siblings!

you’re over the moon when she finds out that kyouka is staying with you and your brother

atsushi is twice as happy seeing you talk your mouth off and finally having a girl around your age to talk to

Dazai: He looks pretty scrawny, and while he is a pretty good fighter fighter through skill he isn't the physically strongest opponent, but you still wouldn't be able to beat him. He'd come up with some sort of plan where you'd probably think you'd won but then you turn around and oop no Dazai won. How does that work? Who fucking knows.

Beelzebub: There is a chance that he would literally eat you, but for the most part while he is a big, beefy demon, he's also a teddy bear; he'd probably let you punch him over and over with a straight face. Stay away from his food and you should be fine.

Mammon: On one hand, he is the second most powerful of his brothers, he could easily destroy you. On the other hand, boy gets beat up verbally and physically by his brothers every damn day and has a mountain of insecurities, poke at those and you could probably win. Or make him even more mad. It's a gamble with the avatar of greed, my guy.

Jae-ha: He's a quick fellow, and his aim with those daggers is pretty spot on, it'd be very difficult and your best chance would be to try and ground him so he can't use his dragon leg. Although, he's a pervert and would probably like getting beat up, so you could win simply by that

Meis and Gueira: I mean they look decently tough with those bikes and the armor and the fire, but everytime we see them in a fight they get their asses handed to them in like two seconds. Best to be equiped with a fire extinguisher or like some ice cubes to chuck at 'em.

Aizawa Shouta: Your best bet is to catch him in the middle of a nap, but please be so careful not to wake him up, he's most likely be so cranky that he'd forget he's a hero and snap your neck.

Idia Shroud: His scrawny ass barely ever leaves his room, he hasn't lifted anything heavier than his phone ever, he's a flaming stick basically.

Sesshomaru: He has very little mercy to spare and has killed a great deal of people and demons.

Annie January: She is capable of blinding and throwing you across the room with a beam of light from her hands and can lift like thirty two times her bodyweight. Unless you also have superpowers, would not recommend.

Byleth: She's a skilled fighter on her own, but she also has an army of feral students ready to beat the shit out of anyone who messes with their proffessor.

Shatina: Her greatest joy is beating people up and watching them bleed, she steps on and torments even her closest allies on a near daily basis. She would crush you and the go right back to drinking.

A combination of phosphorus-rich manure from factory farms and fertilizer-rich water from sugar fields pumped into the lake from the south created a toxic algae bloom that threatens the life in the lake.24

These challenges are not unique. According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), blue-green algae has been present for millions of years, with algal blooms dating back to the 12th century. However, the agency notes,25 “[I]t is possible that the frequency and duration of blooms are increasing in some Wisconsin waters as a result of increased nutrient concentrations.”

This problem has been happening all over the U.S., particularly in agricultural areas where the use of phosphorus-based fertilizers is prolific, as it fuels blue-green algae growth. Another source of phosphorus driving the toxic algae growth to unprecedented levels is glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup.

Health Risks Associated With Nitrates and Coliform Bacteria

Private well water in Iowa was tested in 2016 by Iowa Watch,28 a nonprofit news organization. They estimate 288,000 residents rely on water from private wells. The study tested 28 wells throughout southwest Iowa and found nitrate levels as high as 168 parts per million (ppm) with 11 of the 28 wells registering levels at or above 45 ppm.

The department of public health tested more than 1,700 private wells and found 19 percent at or above the legal limit of 10 ppm. The standard set for nitrate in drinking water was determined nearly 25 years ago to protect infants against methaemoglobinemia, which decreases the ability of the blood to carry oxygen, commonly caused by nitrate in drinking water.29

While the standard has not been reviewed since, recent studies from the National Cancer Institute find nitrate levels at 5 ppm increases the risk of colon, thyroid, ovarian and kidney cancers.30

Animal waste and fertilizer runoff are two of the largest contributors to water pollution and contamination. Rising productivity on industrial factory farms is single-handedly impairing drinking water supplies across the country, polluting with key culprits like nitrogen, phosphate, insecticides and pesticides.

In the Midwest, Iowa is the leader in U.S. corn and soy production and a major producer of hogs, eggs, cattle and chickens raised in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs).1

Over 55 percent of the rivers and streams in the state fall short of federal water quality standards and in the greater Des Moines area, the water filtration system that cost more than $4 million to install in 1991, now costs $7,000 a day to run.2

According to environmental journalist Mark Shapiro,3 water prices have risen 10 percent each year to cover the rising cost of filtration, and the system still can't keep up with a nitrogen in the water supply.

While awaiting the installation of a new filtration system, people in the state have been plagued with an increased risk of cancer4 and birth defects,5 believed to be linked to the nitrogen-contaminated drinking water.

The plight of rural residents dependent on groundwater without city water options was recently covered by the Wall Street Journal, which reported that6 "One in seven Americans drinks from private wells, which are being polluted by contaminants from manure and fertilizer."

Groundwater Contamination Rising Across America

The high levels of productivity in America's food system supply has taken a significant toll on the environment. The industry was not designed to protect the very earth it depends upon. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), agriculture is the leading cause of poor water quality.7

The National Water Quality Assessment8 showed pollution from agriculture was the leading source of impairment to water quality, the third largest source of impairment to lakes and the second largest source of impairment to wetlands.

These agricultural activities generally occur in the absence of a conservation plan and are generated from poorly located or managed CAFOs, overgrazing, plowing, and the improper application of fertilizer, according to the EPA.9

These factors affecting groundwater and poorly managed soil can be changed using regenerative farming practices. Unfortunately, the damage caused by industrial farming and CAFOs to water supplies across America is significant, and will take time to recover from.

America's Polluted Water a Direct Result of Industrial Farming

David Cwiertny, director of the University of Iowa's Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination, says,10 "The worst-kept secret is how vulnerable private wells are to agricultural runoff."

New York Times national correspondent Jack Healy calls rural America's polluted water,11 "Their Own Private Flint." He reported on groundwater contamination in Wisconsin where residents now refuse to drink the water, won't brush their teeth and dread taking showers.

These fears and frustrations are the result of budget cuts for environmental enforcement, inspections and weakened pollution rules. Among some of the factors producing contaminants are larger industrial factory farms producing larger cows, shifting crop mixes and increasing amounts of waste products.

In Iowa the legislature dismissed bills to block new large-scale hog operations,12 while in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin, a judge allowed Kinnard Farms to expand based on the condition they take steps to prevent contamination, already at high levels based on their current rate of production.13

Spreading Manure Over Thousands of Acres Contributes to Runoff

Groundwater contamination is nearly always the result of human activity and is difficult and expensive to clean up. The depth of groundwater from the surface varies from place to place and is affected by factors such as the depth of the topsoil and cracks found in the bedrock. The EPA recommends testing well water every year for Coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH levels.14

EPA testing in Kewaunee found nearly 30 percent of private wells contained bacteria or elevated levels of nitrates. Groundwater is impacted by runoff from fields largely exempted from federal regulation.

This has impacted not only rural water supplies. Close to 500 public water systems have exceeded federal nitrate limits according to EPA data — a 13 percent increase from two decades earlier.15 Scientists believe groundwater contamination could be cut by reducing fertilizer use and reducing the spread of manure across vulnerable fields.

Unfortunately, dairy farmers continue to expand large industrial operations. As noted by Kevin Masarik, groundwater specialist from the University of Wisconsin,16 "it's unclear where all that manure is going to go, and do we have the tools and oversight in place to make sure it's done in a good way?"

In Wisconsin, a state-funded report found over 6 percent of the private wells exceeded federal health standards for nitrates.17 In 2016, farmers founded Peninsula Pride Farms to address complaints about dairy farm impact. Among those residents it helped was Erika Balza, who two years earlier had turned on her bathroom faucet only to be met by muddy brown water that smelled like manure.18

Tests revealed her well was contaminated with E. coli and other bacteria. With the help of state funds, they drilled a new well and 18 months later it also tested positive for Coliform bacteria and elevated nitrate levels.19

Results of a published study in 2008 recognized the necessity for a whole approach to treat the impact on the water system as well as drainage and physical modifications to water catchment. According to the author,20 "The implications for the management of agriculture are far more profound than is currently widely realized."

Agricultural Runoff Spawning Toxic Algae Growth and More

In an effort to get a better sense of how agricultural runoff is affecting water quality, the EPA and U.S. Geological Survey tested 100 streams between Ohio and Nebraska, looking for pesticides and nutrients used in farming. Tests were conducted looking for mercury, livestock hormones and pesticides, including the weed killer glyphosate.21

The results of the study found there are no pristine streams left as the minimum number of pesticides detected in the water at any site reached 28. During the three-month sampling period an average of 54 pesticides were found at each site.

Streams with higher levels of nitrogen and phosphorus found in fertilizer and animal wastes were more likely to have degraded invertebrates and fish communities. Nitrate accounted for the most total nitrogen and was an important stressor identified for fish.22

The devastation in Lake Okeechobee, Florida, that became visible in late 2017 is a representation of the type of damage nitrogen- and phosphorus-rich manure leaking from factory farms can trigger in groundwater. Following a massive hurricane killing nearly 2,500 residents in 1928,23 a dike was built around the lake causing the water to drain east and west via man-made canals and drying up the Everglades.

A combination of phosphorus-rich manure from factory farms and fertilizer-rich water from sugar fields pumped into the lake from the south created a toxic algae bloom that threatens the life in the lake.24

These challenges are not unique. According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), blue-green algae has been present for millions of years, with algal blooms dating back to the 12th century. However, the agency notes,25 "[I]t is possible that the frequency and duration of blooms are increasing in some Wisconsin waters as a result of increased nutrient concentrations."

This problem has been happening all over the U.S., particularly in agricultural areas where the use of phosphorus-based fertilizers is prolific, as it fuels blue-green algae growth. Another source of phosphorus driving the toxic algae growth to unprecedented levels is glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup.

Health Risks Associated With Nitrates and Coliform Bacteria

Blasting well water with chlorine to reduce the growth of hazardous microorganisms, as some rural residents have done,26 creates additional health hazards — but there is no easy fix for nitrate contamination. Without a backup city water supply option, many have turned to buying bottled water in an effort to save their health.

To protect residents from infections caused by fecal bacteria contamination, water treatment plants disinfect the water with chlorine and other chemicals. However, those react with organic matter to produce extremely toxic disinfection byproducts (DBPs), which also carry dangerous long-term health hazards.

DBPs may increase your risk of developing bladder cancer and have been associated with liver, kidney and intestinal tumors in animal studies.27 Pregnant women run an increased risk of miscarriage and giving birth to babies with cardiovascular defects, neural tube defects or low birth weight.

Private well water in Iowa was tested in 2016 by Iowa Watch,28 a nonprofit news organization. They estimate 288,000 residents rely on water from private wells. The study tested 28 wells throughout southwest Iowa and found nitrate levels as high as 168 parts per million (ppm) with 11 of the 28 wells registering levels at or above 45 ppm.

The department of public health tested more than 1,700 private wells and found 19 percent at or above the legal limit of 10 ppm. The standard set for nitrate in drinking water was determined nearly 25 years ago to protect infants against methaemoglobinemia, which decreases the ability of the blood to carry oxygen, commonly caused by nitrate in drinking water.29

While the standard has not been reviewed since, recent studies from the National Cancer Institute find nitrate levels at 5 ppm increases the risk of colon, thyroid, ovarian and kidney cancers.30

Regenerative Farming Practices Help Reduce Environmental Impact

As noted, the implications for management have been far more profound than was widely recognized in 2008.31 Using regenerative farming principles can change the outlook for groundwater pollution and reduce the use of heavy pesticides and insecticides.

In my previous article, "How Regenerative Farming Methods Can Restore Ecology and Rebuild Communities," Will Harris shares how he converted his farm from a conventional farm to a regenerative farm that today has a positive cash flow and supports three families.

The farm no longer uses chemical fertilizers or pesticides and Harris does not till the soil. Organic matter has gone from 0.5 percent to more than 5 percent in 15 years, which is a significant improvement. His farm also boasts the largest bald eagle population in Georgia, a clear indication of the biological health of the farm.

Harris has proven organic and regenerative farming can be done on a large scale that may produce meat with clear, large differences in nutritional content, including higher levels of omega-3 and essential minerals and antioxidants.32

Consider supporting your local organic and regenerative farmers by purchasing their goods at local farmers markets or purchasing your meat and dairy products directly from your local farm. A growing number of homeowners are also converting their yards into edible landscaping using organic and regenerative methods.

If you live in an apartment or have a small yard, consider container growing for some of your produce to reduce the amount you purchase at the grocery store. Certifications to look for, denoting the highest quality foods, grown according to regenerative principles, include Demeter (biodynamic certification) and the American Grassfed Association (AGA) certification.
