Once upon a time, NRC's Board Game Club decided to organize a chess competition. Thanks to Azul's marketing genius, the event became really popular, with plenty of students from outside the club participating.
However, due to an accident (Floyd was bored and Grim annoyed him, everything is now on fire), most of the club's chess sets were destroyed. To solve the problem, contestants were encouraged to bring one of their personal sets.
This idea made for an ecletic set up, especially since most students are crazy rich. Idia brought the set Leona gave him for his birthday, Malleus found an old heirloom from Briar Valley, Kalim isn't even a competitor, but he still got a set made of solid gold and encrusted with precious gems from the Scarabia storage room, and so on... (Cater took a bunch of pictures of all the different styles).
In an effort to make up for Grim's mishap, Adeuce also decided to help, remembering that Heartslabyul has a room filled with different games that students often used.
There were dozens of chess sets, but they just HAD to choose the pretty one atop of a pedestal, with a sign saying "NO!!" in bold letters (in their defense, Heartslabyul is nonsensical, also they were in a competition with Sebek and that was the best set).
A few days later, right before the event, the game club students began to organize the space for the matches.
Only for the Heartslabyul set to come to life and start fighting people, that is...
Apparently, the Queen of Hearts left a small contingent of her best soldiers to protect the school, just in case. Hidden as a deck of cards and a chess set, those soldiers can be summoned by simply opening their cases/boxes, though they shall only answer to the Heartslabyul housewarden.
She also forgot to tell anyone else about the plan, trusting that a single rule of "When in trouble, get the chess set or the playing cards" would suffice.
So now we have a bunch of gigantic marble statues wandering around campus, looking for hostile forces or their leader...
After a few fights, a statue crashing a dormhead meeting and kidnapping Riddle, and plenty of discussion, the students FINALLY manage to calm the statued down, explaining how it was all a misunderstanding.
All's well that ends well, but now the chess pieces want to watch the actuall chess matches.... something about wanting to know the prowess of great warriors and future leaders...
And that is how we get an chess event in twst, with a few extra cards and special outfits, since this just became a formal event, what with the piqued interest of a bunch of ancient royal guards.
The main event cards would be Leona, Idia, Azul, Malleus, Lillia and Jamil, since they're the actual contestants for the competition, while Riddle also gets an SSR, since he is supervising the gigantic chess soldiers, in a role similar to the Queen of Hearts.
Since the statues insisted on participating in the competition's finale, the last match is held in the school's Coliseum, with a cute twstune to wrap things up.
Then the victor gets crowned and the chess pieces leave.

I have a headcanon for after TaiSui was defeated. I think Xiyun/Lanhua just plain collapsed. From exhaustion, from grief, a combination of both... It doesn't matter, she's just down.
The fairies try to get to her. Because, you know, she was one of them. She's Changheng's almost-wife. They got to see if she's fine.
Except the Moon Tribe has opinions about it. And their opinion is that the fairies should leave their Yuezhu the fuck alone.
Anyway, I want Shangque to go dragon and abscond with the offline Xishan Goddess while Xunfeng bitches at Yunzhong (backed up by Changheng after a bit of coaxing).

Under the cut for length. :D
The door swished open, startling her from her reverie. She managed to not drop her tea.
"Morning, Ensign," Captain Mercer said. "Did you sleep well?"
"Uh, not really," she admitted. "You?"
"Not at all," he said with a shrug. He looked down at the coffee. "You are a lifesaver."
He grabbed one of the mugs and sat down before drinking it down. Once he appeared properly caffeinated, he spoke again.
"Your report?"
Nia swallowed anxiously as she forwarded it to him. Captain Mercer picked up his pad and started skimming through it.
"I have read over Ambassador Crovrel's notes, and everything seems okay," Nia said. "I genuinely cannot tell what she could be doing that would be causing offense to the Za'ari. However, body language is quite important, so there may be subtle cues that she's missing or weird vibes that she's giving off, so to speak - "
"Captain, we will be rendezvousing with the Sarakev in eight minutes," came a voice over comms.
"How are we an hour early?" Captain Mercer asked.
Her stomach dropped through her feet. She hadn't even gotten through the first paragraph. She had no idea if her plans were even acceptable. What if she had made a mistake? Nia felt her heart starting to race.
"We have not altered course. The Sarakev has chosen to meet us here. They must attend to another incident."
"I see," Captain Mercer said. He gave her a look. "Well, let's go meet our guests, then."
Nia nodded in silence. She followed after him obediently, her stomach twisting tighter with each step. Commander Grayson came to join them about halfway there. She had a frown on her face, and her lips were set in a thin line. Nia noticed that her mug of coffee was much larger.
"Did you get a chance to review everything?"
"Nope," Captain Mercer said. "It should be fine."
Nia gave him a look of horror as she trotted along behind them. Commander Grayson sighed and finished the last of her coffee.
"Ensign Hreevan, could you do me a favor?" she asked. "Can you throw this into the recycler?"
"Of course, Commander," Ensign Hreevan said, giving them a curious look.
All too soon, they came to the shuttle bay, where a Krill vessel had just landed. The back ramp dropped, and a group of four Krill stepped off. A few more unloaded some boxes and crates behind them. They exchanged a few words.
Just as quickly, the shuttle left, leaving the four individuals and a pile of crates behind. Captain Mercer stepped forward. Nia shuffled forward a step, trying her best to hide behind Captain Mercer and Commander Grayson without actually looking like she was trying to hide.
"Hello," Captain Mercer said, putting on his most welcoming smile. "Welcome aboard the Orville, gentlemen."
"Captain Mercer," said the Krill who looked like he was in charge. "My colleagues and I thank you for assisting us in our diplomatic mission."
Oh my God. The holographic videos had not done his voice justice, Nia thought to herself.
"It is our pleasure to help," he said. "Please allow me to make introductions. This is Commander Grayson, my second in command." Captain Mercer seemed less than impressed when he realized she was trying to hide behind him. "This," he said, shuffling her forward, "is Ensign Bridges, our resident expert on Za'ar and her people."
Nia suddenly felt tiny as they scrutinized her. She swallowed and tried to give them a welcoming smile.
"Hi," she managed to say.
Their eyes met, and she suddenly felt like she could not breathe, an odd electric feeling starting at her toes and working its way up. He tilted his head in acknowledgement and diverted attention from her. Her heart thudded wildly in her chest. Her hands and knees felt oddly shaky after that brief encounter.
