5. Hi, I need help finding a fic I’m pretty sure I’ve seen recommended on here a couple years ago.

I don’t remember the title or the author. It was on AO3. It was an Alternative Universe fic where WWX is an art student (and lived in a dorm with the Wen siblings) and LWJ has a very active but discreet sex life. WangXian know each other but they’re not together. Eventually they start sleeping with each other (WWX doesn’t realize LWJ actually likes him and he’s not just another hookup). There is also a secondary plot about one of LWJ’s past hookups stalking and tormenting them at a club or party at some point? T

10. Hello!! I love this blog, where I find fics to read!! A few days ago, I asked someone to find me a fic, but I'm here again because I remembered med and another fic that I loved reading, but currently can't find.

The things I remember: Wangxian has an spiritual connection, which is why the golden core transfer does not occur (and it is qing who informs Wei Ying of the connection, as Madam Yu knew and gave tea to undo the connection but it did not work ) and if I'm not mistaken Yanli is the one who told Wei Ying that the spiritual connection no longer exists (which is obviously wrong)

If you can't find it, I ask you to recommend something similar.

14. Hi! For next fic finder, could you help me find a modern wangxian au with combination of arranged marriage, marriage of convenient (i think it is), and contract marriage. YZY arranged a marriage between WWX and LWJ for a bussiness cooperation. WWX agreed to that so he can get away from the Jiang (especially YZY) and to make his own carrier. Then LWJ and WWX make a contract to make the marriage last until 2 years and decided if they want to keep the marriage or not. Hi, im #14. Unfortunately its not the fic that iam searching for. The one that iam serching for focused on wangxian, other characters barely appears. Even the jiangs only gets mentioned. Wwx didnt work for Jiang, i think he is graphic design freelancer? The agrement for divorce is between the two of them, their family didnt know about their agreement. They choose how long they stay together before divorce after they think that the project between their family is finished so their divorce wont effect the project. WWX even has a plan after their divorce to open his own office. If i remember corectly, WWX realize he didnt want to get divorced is a few days before the day of their divorce. Like he is in his room and thinking that after their divorce, he cant listening to LWJ playing his guqin and spend their days together and he didnt want that.

20. Hello! I’m looking for a fic where during the Sunshot Campaign, Wei Wuxian was able to tame the Xuanwu, resulting in victory. However, he wasn’t fully able to control its bloodlust so it was sequestered onto an island in Lotus Pier.

However, he leaves one day for a brief visit to Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli, JGS paid a child to visit the island and the child is killed. This causes WWX to go with the Xuanwu into the water surrounding the island and he disappears for many years.

Later on, Jin Ling ends up trying to prove himself by going into the forest surrounding this island (which has since filled with resentful energy). And finds that WWX has come back and the Xuanwu has been purified.

Deleted Scenes from new look!

As promised, here are the deleted scenes from my brand-new wlw Wangxian fic, new look! Heads-up that there's some nsfw text behind the cut.

The fic itself is pretty short, so there’s only two deleted scenes – both false starts from the beginning of the fic. Once the train got rolling, it stayed on its track pretty well, thankfully.

The finished fic begins with what’s really a prologue, laying out Lan Zhan and Wei Ying’s shared history through makeup. But my preference, always, is to show rather than tell (that’s a preference, not a rule – telling is essential sometimes), so my first crack at beginning the fic was this:

There’s a noise of dismay from the open door of their shared bathroom. “Lan Zhan!”

“Mn?”

Wei Ying pokes her head out of the bathroom doorway, looking apologetic. “My makeup is taking over your bathroom counter again – you should have said something! I’ll dump this crap somewhere else.”

Lan Zhan walks over to lean against the doorway. She surveys the vanity, which is indeed now home to assorted brushes, palettes, bottles, and cylinders of mysterious provenance. Good.

“Wei Ying,” she says gently, taking her girlfriend’s hand. “No.”

Wei Ying blinks. “No?”

“Wei Ying. You live here,” Lan Zhan reminds her. She understands why Wei Ying needs many reminders. “It is not my bathroom counter. It is our bathroom counter. And you may strew it with as many cosmetics as you desire.”

“Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying mumbles, folding herself into Lan Zhan’s chest; Lan Zhan’s arms come up to hold her with the ease of instinct. She should always be holding Wei Ying.

Wei Ying’s face is tucked into the curve of Lan Zhan’s neck, because sometimes Wei Ying likes to pretend that Lan Zhan is taller than she is. Into that hollow, Wei Ying mutters, “’Strew it’? Who says strew it?”

“I do.”

“You fucking nerd,” Wei Ying says. “I love you. And I’ll prove it by ‘strewing’ my makeup all over y—our bathroom counter.”

Lan Zhan holds her a little closer. “See that you do,” she says, comfortable.

So cute!!! If I do say so myself. But it just was not conveying as much information as I needed to convey. So then I wrote up the current, prologue-y beginning, which was originally going to be followed by this:

And now that Wei Ying’s palettes and brushes have taken over half the bathroom vanity—now that the kitchen table is stained with stray drops of nail polish—Lan Zhan likes knowing that, when people see Wei Ying in her crimson-lined lips and mascara-darkened lashes, long hair spilling out of her high ponytail, holding hands with clean-faced, short-haired Lan Zhan… they think it means something about what she and Wei Ying do in bed.

She likes knowing that they’re full of shit.

People think the careful penciled arch of Wei Ying’s eyebrow means that it’s Wei Ying panting underneath her, elbows giving out, moaning high in her throat when she’s not whining, “Lan Zhan, how could you, ah – have mercy, have mercy on your poor Wei Ying, ah!”

Which it is, sometimes.

But it’s this, too: Lan Zhan on her knees, no thought in her mind but please her, please her, face upturned in worship as Wei Ying uses her mouth, one hand clenched in her hair, murmuring, “That’s it, just like that, my good Lan Zhan – always so good for me.”

It had surprised Wei Ying, too, in fact, when they first talked about it.

“Really?” she had asked – Lan Zhan didn’t miss the hope hiding under her disbelief. “But you’re so…” She waved her hand at Lan Zhan: her square shoulders; her undercut; her bra meant to contain rather than display.

“Is it so hard to believe?” Beat. “That I might want to give you everything I am – put all of it at your service? That I might want to worship you as you deserve?”

Wei Ying swallows. Her eyes have gone dark; hungry. “No,” she says, rough, “that sounds like you.” Beat. She looks vulnerable. “I always wanted to, but no one else—” Beat. “They only wanted the—the other stuff.”

“They were fools,” Lan Zhan says, serene. Wei Ying admitted early on that she likes it when Lan Zhan is mean about her exes. Lan Zhan is all too happy to oblige.

This is very close, actually, to what we get in the final version, especially toward the end. But the beginning, with Lan Zhan thinking about how other people perceive them as a couple, didn’t really fit with where the fic was going – the focus is and should be pretty tightly on perceptions of Lan Zhan specifically. That said, I do wish I could have found an efficient way, in the finished fic, to signal that they switch. Not for any story-serving reason, just because it would make me happy. ☺️

Hello! Welcome to the MDZS fandom! It’s a really interesting place to be.

I do think you are perhaps misunderstanding my fight, and it’s understandable, there’s a lot of history behind it. But I don’t actually hate Jiang Cheng the book character at all.

He’s a fantastic antagonist, one who has enough happen to him that he’s understandable without justifying his actions. His anger and bitterness make him incredibly active, which can help move the plot along well, and the fact that he is also Wei Wuxian’s personal antagonist makes him very fun and relevant as you need the antagonists that can make a character hurt personally for stories of this type.

As his general character archetype, I think he’s done really well. I quite enjoy him in the context he is supposed to be seen as, the younger person who grew up with the hero who instead of attempting to better himself, tore down those around him in an attempt to put everyone on the same level.

My problem (and my fight) is that the character of Jiang Cheng in Modaozushi is not the Jiang Cheng that is in the fanfics and the art and the meta and discussions.

The Jiang Cheng that you see in fanfics and metas that isn’t under the Not JC Friendly on Ao3 or #canon jiang cheng tag on tumblr is one that is no longer an antagonist or in character, but someone else entirely. Someone who no longer slots into the world of MDZS as if he were actually the person they posit him to be, the events that he is responsible for would have never happened. Quite simply they take the character I enjoy, erase all of his actual traits and then show up to scream at me for writing him wrong, or lying about the book, or not knowing how to read.

Or they are gleefully celebrating classism and homophobia with him. I can’t tell you how many posts I’ve seen that are basically “he’s right to be homophobic because Wangxian are annoying and he should hate them for that”. In a danmei fandom. About the lead couple. I already have dealt with more than enough homophobia in my daily life, why do I have to deal with it in a fandom for a novel in which the leads are a happily married queer couple?

I have been in this fandom for a year and a half. I tag my posts appropriately. When I was requested to not put character hate in the main tag (and novel quotes qualified as character hate), I did as they asked and invented my own tag. Sure it’s a little snarky, but it’s also an easy one to block and allows others like myself who enjoy the character as he is in the book to find my stuff. On ao3, I’ve written a few fics that use him in it as he is in the book and tagged it not for JC fans as they requested.

Do you know what I got?

I have anon hate for using my tag, the very tag I created in response to their request. On my fics that use him, I have people showing up to cry that he’s out of character and I can’t write. When I did all that I could do to try and enjoy a character as he is in canon and as they continually say is what they want. “You don’t have to like him, just tag your stuff so we don’t have to see it.”

I do stand against his stans. I have blocked many of them and gotten in arguments with many others. You are new to this fandom so you wouldn’t have seen this, but a year ago one of them wrote a fanfic about Lan Wangji murdering Wei Wuxian because they were mad about the very existence of the not for jc fans tag, and tagged it with romance and fluff tags so that fans of wangxian would click on it and read a horrible, deliberately hurtful fic and gleefully celebrated it on Twitter.

Why should I not stand against them? They have bullied so many people out of this fandom for not writing Jiang Cheng in the way they want. That is not okay. This is a massive fandom in places where it is very easy to filter and tag, and they try to bully and chase us out of the whole fandom because we don’t like their made up version of a character, or the fact that they are homophobic and shitty to the leads and to me and my friends and my followers.

Welcome to Modaozushi fandom, new reader. It’s a very volatile place with a long history. This is my section of it. And that is why I tag with canon jiang cheng and do not take any shit from people who have umbrage with that.

I asked google bard for fanfic reccomendations and one of your fics turned up lol

You know what's been amusing (horrifying) me about all this AI stuff lately is just how wrong it all is? Which, if it was all just wrong, it would be a funny failed experiment. But it's even worse. On the surface it gets just enough right to lend it some false sort of legitimacy, but I have never once seen any AI answer a question where it gets everything right. There is always one big error or many big errors. And it's one of the scariest things about AI produced "knowledge" because there is nothing here that tells us about it's certainty of the various "facts" it is providing. These answers put solid facts right next to complete misinformation. It places information from peer-reviewed sources right next to internet rumor and group-think conspiracy theories. So what skills do we, the average reading and knowledge seeker, need to be able to engage with technology like this in a way that can counter this harm? Especially because I know this sort of thing isn't going to go anywhere? I'm pretty sure it's here to stay.

Like, let's be real. I couldn't give less of a crap that google bard clearly has no idea what my fic is about. That's not the point. My ego will survive perfectly fine. But what if people start turning to AI for real knowledge that will influence and form truths for people around real issues in the world? What happens if these sites are where people go for knowledge?

Let's look at some silly examples that we can easily fact check, just to get a sense of how wrong all this stuff can be.

I went to chatgpt and asked it "tell me about the fanfiction author Annerb". This is what it spewed out:

It's like that old game two truths and a lie here. Or more like one truth and ten lies and five misunderstandings. Hope all those other hardworking authors don't mind that I've stolen credit for all their fics! (I regenerated it a few times, and it claimed I wrote for fandoms I've never even seen the source material for.)

Or how about this one. I asked it "What is wangxian?" (one of my latest otps.)

"Wangxian is a term that refers to a fictional romantic relationship between two male characters named Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian in the novel "Mo Dao Zu Shi" by Chinese author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The novel was later adapted into a popular Chinese animated series and live-action television series.

First two paragraphs? Not so bad. Pretty accurate for the most part. That third paragraph? Really fascinating that it's even there and also completely factually incorrect. While the live-action tv show never explicitly states that it is a romantic relationship thanks to censorship, the original novel includes multiple explicit sex scenes between the two characters and they also end up married? Like, actually married? So why is this "important to note"? Why does the so-called "legitimacy" of the ship even factor in? Is this just a scraped up reflection of discourse? Or at worst, a reflection of larger biases reflected in internet "knowledge"?

I know you probably sent me that screencap just as a fun mention of my fic popping up somewhere, for which I thank you. It was nice of you to think of me.

At the same time, these are the things I just can't help thinking about as truth becomes even harder to see day by day. Walk carefully, my friends.

asking you about... wen qing

I will admit that WQ is actually one of the characters I've thought about the least, because she has minimal impact on the characters I'm personally invested in. That said, of course I've done some close reading because I am a super mega nerd and I do have thoughts.

I actually feel bad for WQ as a character, not just within the narrative but in the context of how she appears to be treated by fandom. The yassification of female characters is so depressing to me and she's probably one of the characters who suffers most under fandom's misguided and yet utterly relentless commitment to its own brand of frustratingly regressive progressivism.

Normally all my meta is grounded firmly in MDZS, but I do have to mention CQL here to underline my point. There's an abortive romance arc introduced between WQ and JC in CQL, and while (reasons behind that particular decision aside) I have no issue with that change in theory, it's directly responsible for one of the two main fandom-sanctioned WQ takes.

Take One (thanks CQL)

WQ is a badass awesome lady yeah! She pegs JC all night long because penetration is empowering!

Take Two (actually I'd blame CQL for this too except fandom loves doing this to all female characters regardless)

WQ is a badass awesome lesbian yeah! She's in a lesbian relationship with [insert female character du jour here] because she is a lesbian and that's empowering!

In case you can't tell, I have minimal patience for this sort of thing. Everyone has the right to write and enjoy whatever they like, but in my own space I have the right to highlight fandom trends and interpretations that I feel are unsupported. A lot of my frustration stems from the very fact that they are trends. Individual fics and meta posts are rarely the issue. The issue is that it's so difficult to find anything that is actually textually-grounded.

Anyway, the WQ and JC relationship in CQL is actually quite a mature depiction of two people who have an interest in each other and ultimately recognise that a relationship would not only be impractical, but that neither of them are the type to forgo their other loyalties and responsibilities for each other. Quite a neat parallel to Xiyao and contrast to Wangxian, actually. Overlooking these challenges in favour of centring the question of who is penetrating whom doesn't do either character justice. Pegging is all good fun, but its prevalence with this particular pairing is something that raises my eyebrow. I am deeply wary of analysis that looks at the power dynamic of a relationship, concludes that the woman has the stronger personality, and equates that with the man being the receiving partner.

As for WQ being a lesbian, from what I can tell this originates in theory from WQ being alone with JYL one time in CQL (gasp) coupled with fandom's insatiable need to make every single female character a lesbian regardless of whether the text supports it or not. And I'd be truly interested in a resistant read or a speculative fic that is canon consistent and depicts WQ as a lesbian; in MDZS especially we know nothing about her orientation. And yet what I see  is not thoughtful explorations of gaps in the text. It's muddy hobnail boots all over the text and the result is rarely nuanced or convincing. WQ and her partner du jour are reduced to a superficial collection of traits only tenuously connected to the source at best, and more often than not they are also supporting characters, existing within a fic merely to cheerlead the m/m couple and nominally tick a box on the representation checklist.

This post is quite harsh so I'll reiterate: I'm not speaking about any particular person or fic here. I'm speaking about trends. The problem is one of quantity as much as it is quality. If I could find a reasonable percentage of content with a solid grounding in the source material I would be very happy, but the ratio is just absolutely horrendous.

Getting back to what is actually present in the text, WQ is an incredibly resilient character. She's trying to balance her loyalty to her clan with her own ethics and the wellbeing of her brother and she does as well as anyone can in the circumstances. I like that she isn't necessarily the Actually Good Wen and that she isn't secretly working against WRH. She doesn't really like what he's doing but she understands the reality of her position and she's trying to work with that. I always respect that in a character because I find it much less interesting when someone wearing protagonist armour comes smashing through the plot (WWX, we'll get to you later).

I don't get why there's so much hate for JC. Fanon JC is still JC and there's realism to him too. Realism can be subjective but that doesn't mean its depiction is wrong or unrealistic. It is factually correct and righteous.

Are you new to the fandom? Because let me tell you, no one had a problem with JC until the fanon version of him started to pop up everywhere and people started to indirectly or directly undermine the series protags to lift him up.

And no one bothered to tag it. We don't care if you worship the ground JC walks on or relate with some of his character traits. We just don't want to read a fic for Wangxian only for everyone in the story to lift JC up, who is a canonical antagonist, and bash on WWX. Nothing was tagged. We just ended up being bombarded with fanon JC everywhere.

You know the feeling when you stumble across JC bashing and feel hurt because of it? Well, it happened all the time for us, without warning or consideration.

At some point, people started to rebel against the fanon narrative and started writing fics or seeking fics where THEIR FAVS AND CANON PROTAGS weren't needlessly bashed to just make JC rosy.

Do that if you want. But we reserve the right to create our own space without all of the elements undesirable to us. Which is why we choose to have a separate tag. That's why we generally mark our fics as not jc friendly.

Which isn't a courtesy given to us in return. We are expected to just deal with it because your interpretation of his character is more popular. We tag our posts and fics, you don't bother to do the same in return, and we end up stumbling over shit and have to work harder to keep our space clean because JC fans can't take the extra effort to just label their stuff properly.

The fact is simple. We're not interested in JC. We're not interested in redeeming him or elevating him, or worrying about his woes. In fact, we'd like to be as far away from that as possible.

But this fandom makes it *impossible* by not tagging things properly.

I'm not going to other people's inboxes and urging them to reconsider their stances on JC. I frankly don't care. I have loved bastard characters and antagonists that are worse than what JC can pull off in his lifetime. Itachi comes to mind, so does Aizen and Sesshoumaru, or Sephiroth.

Do your thing. But don't pretend this was started by us just because we didn't quietly submit to the popular stance on JC.

I won't argue on what's canon and what's not. We have done that to death already. At this point, I don't even care. I don't read fanfics directly, I just write them and read the books. There is no chance of me stumbling across a JC positive fic when I am reading only glittering or some other other I trust.

And there's no need to try to explain JC to me. I am a whole ass adult leading a relatively difficult but successful life. I know right from wrong pretty well.

wangxian princess bride au (ch. 1)

so back in 2020 i wrote the first two chapters of an mdzs princess bride au. i came across it randomly and thought it actually wasn't too bad, so i figured i might as well post it

i likely won't continue it since i'm not in the habit of writing (i've actually never written or posted a fic besides this one), but i thought it might bring some people some entertainment. also want to note that this is unedited/beta read, just posting everything as it was written back in 2020 :3

Chapter 1: Sick Day

“A-Ling, your uncle’s here,” said Jin Zixuan, entering the room.

Jin Ling looked up from his bed, where he was playing mobile games, “Didn’t you tell him I’m sick?” he scowled.

“He’s here because you’re sick. I need someone to watch you while I’m at work.”

“I’m 16, I don’t need a babysitter.” Jin Ling’s scowl was starting to become permanent.

“Sure,” Jin Zixuan conceded, “But you don’t even have the energy to get out of bed for a glass of water, you’ll need someone to do these things for you.”

“Don’t act like I’m some kind of servant, peacock,” started Jiang Cheng as he entered with an expression that put his nephew’s to shame, “I agreed to keep him company for the day because you never let me see my nephew often enough, that’s all.”

“You visit every week…” Jin Ling muttered as Fairy hopped onto the bed, wagging her tail.

Jin Zixuan rolled his eyes, “I’m off to work, I’ll pick up some soup for dinner on my way back.”

Jiang Cheng tried not to think about how Jin Ling wouldn’t have to wait for Jin Zixuan to pick up soup on his way back from work if A-Li were still here, cleared his throat, and pulled Jin Ling’s desk chair to the side of the bed.

Jin Ling, who had already gone back to his game, gave Jiang Cheng a side glace, before once again staring intently at the screen, “Ah, uncle, you don’t have to stay in here you know... I’m sure the living room is more comfortable anyway. I can just call you if I really need something…”

Jiang Cheng decided to ignore the fact that the expensive gaming chair he was sitting in was infinitely more comfortable than the sleek sofas in the living room, which were undoubtedly built more for style than comfort. “Don’t be ridiculous, didn’t I already say I didn’t come here to be your servant? Besides, I brought you something.”

Jin Ling perked up. It wasn’t hard to see he was imagining a new headset, or a new set of athletic clothes for sword practice, or sweets, or even a new friend for Fairy, which were the type of things his uncle usually bought him. He certainly wasn’t expecting…

“A book?” Jin Ling’s face twisted into something dubious.

Jiang Cheng’s scowl deepened. “Don’t be ungrateful.” His scowl softened to a frown, “Your mother used to read this to me when I was sick. Since she’s not here to read it to you-” His fingers clenched around the spine.

Perhaps it’s not surprising that Jin Ling struggles to find words for a moment. “...Well, if mom liked it, it can’t be too bad. What’s it about? Does it have sword fights?” It looked from the cover to be a xianxia novel, so he was hopeful.

Jiang Cheng scoffed, “Of course. Sword fights, demonic cultivation, torture, revenge, fierce corpses, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…”

Even though Jin Ling made another face at the mention of true love and miracles, he finally set his phone to the side. “Alright, but don’t blame me if I fall asleep, I’m sick remember?”

“If you fall asleep I’ll break your legs,” threatened Jiang Cheng as he turned to the first page. “‘The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation’. Chapter 1. Wei Wuxian grew up farming lotus roots in Yunmeng…”

Interest check: multilingual mdzs creations event

Hey mdzs/cql fandom!

This is an interest check (by @rose-nebulijia and me) for an event that aims to celebrate the diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds of the mdzs fandom.

What we’re proposing

An event aimed at creators of all possible forms of content (fanart, fanfic, edits, gifs, fanvids; to name some examples) that intents to shine a spotlight on the kind of creations that usually get a bit less attention because they are not in English (and consequently might not even get made).

You have a favourite poem in your mother tongue that you really think fits wangxian but you didn’t think if you put it on an edit anyone would reblog it? There’s a line from a song in a language you’ve been studying that makes your heart ache for Jiang Yanli? You’ve always wanted to center a piece of fanart around that very specific word in your favourite language that is untranslatable into English? You have a strong emotional connection to a language and want to recreate your experience studying it in a fic featuring mdzs/cql characters?

Those are just some examples :) Anything mdzs/cql related that is centered around a language you care deeply about would have a place in this event!

Why we’re proposing it

A while ago (cough) @rose-nebulijia and I had a talk and found out that we had many sources of inspiration for fanworks that weren’t in English. Given that this fandom is centered around a source material that isn’t in English and knowing that a lot of people were inspired to study Mandarin because of MDZS/CQL, we hoped that we’d have enough company to center an event around this concept.

With this being a large and diverse fandom, we’d love to see some of that diversity being given an outlet.

Languages, no matter if they are our mother tongue or our second, third or even fourth language, hold a part of ourselves. Our hope is that with this event, we as a fandom can access entire oceans of creativity that, so far, have been relatively unsailed.

Who can participate?

Everyone! With all kinds of original fan content!

Which languages will be accepted?

All of them!

Yes, English, too. Since so much of the tumblr-centric mdzs/cql fandom happens in English, the idea of this event is to give languages other than English a place to shine. This does not mean that we will exclude English language creations. In fact, we will be happy to receive them! As we said, the event is for languages you care deeply about – which can, of course, also be English. This is just a gentle reminder that, if you ever wanted to create something in a language you thought would never get attention on tumblr, this event will the time to do so.

How will the event be structured?

The idea is for this event to run for a week, with each day being under a different theme.

For now, we are aiming for a week in November, since this is after some of the other large fandom events in our orbits are over but before the holiday exchanges start.

Do I need to sign up to participate?

No! :)

All that will be required is that you follow the event blog and post your creations on the day with the theme you created them for, using the tag(s) we will announce once the event is launched.

You can post on as many or as few days as you like.

How will we promote the creations?

We will create a blog for this event where all original creations for the event will be reblogged.

in a ceteris paribus situation aka all other things staying equal: 

1) Lan Wangji 100% still has a resting bitch face, which probably would get her a couple of “Lan-er-guniang 美若天仙 (beautiful as an immortal/goddess) but would benefit from smiling more” comments but nobody is that desperate to die yet so, she’s spared. But damn... imagine the sheer number of thirsty boys who’d try to secure a marriage with LWJ. None of them is good enough for Wangji as far as Lan Xichen is concerned. Okay - maybe in Lan Xichen’s opinion, Nie Mingjue is good enough, but he couldn’t be less interested. I see her as I see Huaisang, Xichen please. 

2) Everything interaction between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian in Wei Wuxian’s first life is now 500% more scandalous. 

Exhibit A) Their first meeting at the gates; Jiang Cheng immediately felt his spidey senses tingling.  —“You’d sooner have immortals flying out of your ass than get with someone like her. The second jade of Gusu? The pearl in old man Lan’s eyes? C’mon.”  —“Shut up, A-Cheng.” —“Uh-huh.”  —“Also, she’s not that pretty. Her brother Zewu-jun is much better. There’s a reason he’s ranked first.” WWX is still a disaster bi.  — “LMAO, you? Zewu-jun? Please.” 

Exhibit B) Just because LWJ is a girl does not mean WWX grew more brain cells. 

WWX, straight up to Lan Qiren’s face, “Lan-meimei and I - we’re zhiji.” (he means it like we’re kindred spirits, peas of a pod, etc)  LWJ: *does not deny* Lan Xichen: ⚆_⚆ Lan Qiren: ಠ╭╮ಠ

Exhibit C) Lan Wangji getting drunk the first time. Wei Wuxian knew he crossed a line the minute he invited Lan-er-guniang for a drink. Really, WWX, even for you, this is inappropriate. When Lan Wangji fell face first onto the table, Wei Wuxian knew, he fucked up. “Hey....hey...Lan....Lan...-er-guniang,” He poked her. “Don’t...don’t sleep here! You can’t sleep here! If your Uncle finds out or if Jiang-shushu finds out...they’ll skin me alive and then...and then they’ll make me marry you! I don’t want to marry you; you don’t talk and I’m too young!” 

WWX, being a dipshit, “Hey Lan Zhan, call me Wei-gege.”  LWJ, drunk as fuck, “Wei..gege.”  WWX *((( heart )))* ??? 

Exhibit D) The Cold Pond. Okay, so I don’t think Zewu-jun would sabotage his sister’s virtue by sending a stupid teenage boy her way while she’s bathing, but doesn’t mean Su She is above all that. Wei “I didn’t see anything I swear!” Wuxian. Lan “I will gouge out your eyes.” Wangji. Somehow they still end up in the cave. Maybe WWX got in the water after LWJ got out and got sucked into the vortex and LWJ heard the commotion, turned around, saw WWX had disappeared. “Wei Ying?!” A panicked LWJ jumps back into the pond, “Stop fooling around, come out!” 

Jiang Cheng and Wen Qing 👀👀 when LWJ and WWX fall out of the cave together. Also the fact that Lan-er-guniang and Wei-gongzi went missing, together, for two days. Who knows what could’ve happened. I mean anything really. I mean... that’s gotta stir the pot a little were it not for the Yin Iron stealing everyone’s attention away from this bit of juicy scandal. 

Oh the whole story... so much to work with, so little time. 

3) Because Lan Wangji is a girl, now suddenly there’s a high ranking member of the Lan Clan who can host the girls at Cloud Recesses. I mean, Mianmian, Jiang Yanli, Wen Qing, Lan Wangji - SISTERLY FRIENDSHIP. Other than Mianmian, none of the girls are really talkers which suits Lan Wangji perfectly. Even Mianmian’s chatter is endearing.

4) Lan Wangji is absolutely still a powerhouse during the Sunshot Campaign. The inherent aesthetics of fem!lwj telling the Wen goons to “kneel” - no one will deprive me of this.  Also she will still cut off your arm if you cross her - Xue Yang and Jin Guangyao ya better watch out still. 

I am TORN between two options: Lan Wangji tol and kickass or Lan Wangji smol and kickass. On one hand, the aesthetics of willowy elf-like LWJ, on the other hand, 5′2′’ of whoop ass who can and will throw an unconscious wwx over her shoulder firewoman-style and toll him to safety.  

And amongst other things: 

A) Lan Wangji still becomes Chief Cultivator, because excuse me who else is left to clean up this mess? Jiang “Short-fuse” Wanyin? Nie “I won’t do what I’m not intended to do” Huaisang? Jin “13 year-old” Ling? Or Sect Leader Yao?  Technically, being a woman means that she was never Lan Xichen’s heir, but at the end of it, it’s not like Gusu Lan is left with a lot of choices.  Just the poetic justice of Gusu Lan pleading for Lan Wangji to come back when she fully intends to 隐居山野 (retreat into the mountains) with the resurrected WWX.

Lan Wangji being Chief Cultivator would echo Lan Yi’s tenure and rectify the fact that Gusu Lan’s only female head of family “failed”. Lan Yi had to face a mountain of prejudice because she was woman; someone has to say “up yours” to that. A woman as not only the sect master of Gusu Lan but the Chief Cultivator? Love that for Gusu Lans. (⌐■_■) ☞ ☞

B) Because of ~ sexism ~ I wonder if Lan Wangji would get titled “Hanguang” at all even after the Sunshot Campaign. Even Lan Yi, the SL Lan of her time didn’t have a title. Chances are LWJ won’t either. (Note: Violet Spider is not a title, it’s a moniker). So — say after the way Lan Wangji is still just “Lan-er-guniang”, and she does not obtain the title “Han Guang” until after she leaves Cloud Recesses and become rogue. Like he literally thinks he orphaned Sizhui before Sizhui is even born. And Lan Wangji would never accept anything from Jiang Wanyin, not that it would stop Jiang Wanyin from trying.

9. Hello. For your new fic finder, honestly at this point I’m convinced I’ve dreamed it or merged two fics together idek. It begins with wwx being hunted down by ppl (this is post canon so after all the sieges and in mxy body) and he is trying to wait for lz but dies anyway (similar to Third Times A Charm by Kyerian and Lily but not it) and then wwx time travels back to his lotus pier time before the lectures at cloud recesses. This is where it gets foggy for me. I remember him being really good at the sword and inventions but that is pretty canon. I think jc wasn’t upset bc wwx was SO advanced he was basically at the end of what ymj could teach him? Idk not too sure. Foggy as I said. But bc he was so good I guess he was idle and more troublemaking than usual (?) so Yu furen ended up putting him in lessons with jyl and he learned to embroider, make clothes, paint, manage a house, how to please your man (lol), etc. Jc joined them at some point cause he was jealous wwx and jyl were spending so much time together but quickly left bc he was blushing ashamed idk. I think after either jyl or wwx stopped their lessons but one continued on (leaning towards wwx cause I feel like I remember yzy being passive aggresively kind about it?). Also nhs, jc and wwx were friends pre gusu lectures. Nhs really liked wwx cause he painted fans with him. Also I think when they were getting ready to go to gusu wwx decided to make robes for himself. Nhs was shocked and jc explained how he knew how to do it trying to make fun of wwx which failed. In the end nhs was all heart eyes cause he loved fashion. This is all I remember. As I said I’ve been trying nearly a freaking year to find this fic. 35. I’m searching for a fic and I feel like I’m going crazy–went through 80  pages of AO3 history with no luck, but I know I read it. Almost sure I  found it through the OG wangxianficrecs  around a year or more ago through one of the ff or itmf posts. I  *think* it goes like this: very BAMF WWX, taking place post-Nightless  City, has a better understanding/control of his powers because of his  2nd death, has godlike powers w/o negative side effects of resentful  energy. Maybe in MXY’s body but not sure, just think there was a scene  of wangxian in bed together in the CR and LWJ is worried about people  knowing he’s WWX and how they’ll react. But it could just be that WWX  didn’t die at all, or came back earlier than canon somehow. Some things I  know still happened (LWJ still got whipped for defending WWX), but  others are fuzzy (like maybe the Wen survive somehow?) I’ve read SO MUCH  I wondered if I was conflating multiple fics like Imperfect Memory by Xantissa and help is on the way  by Vamillepudding, but too many things that just aren’t right about   either. In the one I’m thinking of, WWX remembers who he is, LWJ is   quick to express his true feelings (having thought he lost WWX), and   have them reciprocated. It was definitely M or E, there wasn’t really a sub/dom aspect, maybe some theoretical stuff about mastering death so   it’s unable to take him, being immortal without needing a golden core.   #20 of post

41. Since you found me exactly what i was looking for I came back with  two more fics and to say thanks for finding the two i requested the  first time.

A) So the first fic i want to request is one  where wangxian time travel and at first they think its only them but  later on in the story its revealed that because of something they did  lan xichen, nie huaisang and jiang cheng also come back. but near the   beginning of the story lan wangji helps madam lan escape and she goes to  lotus pier and turns out she knows madam yu and qinghengjun comes out of seclusion i belive cause when they go to the lectures he and madam   lan reunite and then our timetravels tell them what happens and there   are multiple training dummies that are destroyed by madam yu and jiang   yanli

B) the second fic is where after canon ends i belive almost everyone but wangxian and a’yuan were dead but a’yuan was making  his way to deaths door but wei wuxian used this array or talisman yo   send them back thousands of years and a’yuan reverts to his child self   and wei wuxian and lan wangji get to raise him but eventualy become   immortal or already were and i dont know if a’yuan becomes immortal or   not but it doesnt really mention him at all after that except a brief   passing. As the years pass wei wuxian and lan wangji travel and meet a   lot of people including their parents and baoshan sanren. it time skips i  belive and its after the lectures(?) and the sects are invited to the burial mounds where a whole bunch of relevant but not totally relevent people are, along with wei wuxian and lan wangji as their immortal sect  leaders and the sects read the books but it doesnt actually show that part and madam meng and madam jin meet and at first madam jin is   standoffish but eventually get to know each other, i dont know anything after that, most like where the last update was.

I think  it starts with LWJ looking for WWX in a village, then it flashbacks to   him receiving a letter where WWX writes that he has fallen in love with a  farmer and marrying him, if LWJ would come to the wedding and give his  blessing… which obviously catches LWJ off-guard because he’s been kinda  assuming that WWX would come back when he’s ready, so now he’s all  jealous and pining, and needs to see for himself what the hell is going  on.  They do end up meeting and go on a night-hunt together, and LWJ notices that WWX is actually acting weird. The reveal was that WWX was actually under some kind of love spell and that the “farmer” was a rogue cultivator trying to bind WWX’s literal life to him and use his   powers.  #20 of post

Another modern au fic in which WY is accused of a crime when he’s   younger, perhaps in his teens (I don’t remember what he did exactly or   if he actually committed it), but he still ends up getting arrested and LZ is the only one who stood up to him at the time. Then a couple of   years later WY is released, becomes a police officer and works together with LZ at the same police station, probably as partners. I think LZ is  kinda ooc, instead of being shy, quiet and frigid, he’s quite bold and  sweary in this fic. Also I recall a specific part that is set by the end  of the story (it could be the last chapter), a party is happening, maybe a wedding or celebration of some sort, and Wangxian goes to the   bathroom to hook up or have sex. I wanted to make this post to compile some of my favorite fics out there from the CQL & MDZS-verse. Most of these are WangXian-centric, but I’ve included some fics that feature Yunmeng Heroes and other dynamics. Anyway, I hope you can enjoy reading some of these! Post-canon 

Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder by @wangxiians (E, 8k) - A lovely wangxian reunion/getting-together fic in which WWX returns to Cloud Recesses after spending some time wandering. The best part about this fic is the letter that WWX sends LWJ before heading to CR. Its filled with so much yearning and tenderness. (It made me cry.)

Seasons of Falling Flowers by @merakilyy (G, 40k) - Post-canon fic about WWX and LQR reaching an understanding of each other, so its not too heavy on the WangXian ship. I really gravitate toward this interpretation of LQR, which is why I really enjoyed this fic. The author does an excellent job at weaving in some humor, some tension, and wangxian feels into a great story. 

This Time With Lanterns by chaoticandrogynous (T, 6k) - A lovely fic about wangxian’s wedding, and shows how much LWJ loves WWX. LWJ and the juniors plan a surprise wedding at Koi Tower. Very soft and tender with surprise appearances from a couple people. I liked this fic because majority of the actual ceremony is described in “moments” through WWX’s eyes as he wants to remember as much as he can since he has a bad memory (but he’s working on it!). 

What is Left Over by qodqodqod (T, 30k) - A fic about WWX training MXY’s golden core. I always wondered what it would look like for him to regain his core, so this is one fic exploring that. This fic has a lot - wangxian feels, yunmeng shuangjie feels, training, and a teeny bit of angst. I enjoyed it a lot! 

Modern AU

A Stroke of Fate by @puddingcatbeans (G, 60k) - A very soft and fun fic about musician!LWJ going to a small village to reflect after a dispute with his agency. He meets WWX and slowly starts to open up to the village-life while falling in love at the same time. This is a great fic that’s filled with the domestic vibes that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I also appreciate the themes of finding yourself, learning how to accept help, and letting go. (It also feeds my fantasies about running away and becoming a farmer.) 

Blooming Days by atsushiis (G, 7k) - Such a sweet wangxian getting-together fic! WWX picks up LWJ when he’s stood up on a date. An exploration of how LWJ may have trouble dating in modern times due to his personality. Featuring the best big brother Lan Xichen, and protective best friend MianMian. And of course, chaotic but kind WWX who swoops in and saves the day. 

all your sums and your pieces by sundiscus (G, 4k) - So this one is a mixture of wangxian and Yunmeng Shuangjie dynamics featuring A-Yuan. A quick and short fic about WWX reuniting with JC. I really like WWX’s internal and verbal dialogue in this fic because he’s clearly nervous and stressed out with A-Yuan, but JC is there to help!

The Paperman by theinkquiry (G, 4k) - This one is a bit of a sad one...but its also really cute at the same time. Paperman!WWX comes and greets LWJ when he’s mourning, but can only say “Lan Zhan.” I really adored this fic because the paperman has so much of WWX’s personality and energy even though he can only say LWJ’s name. And it provides LWJ a glimmer of hope in his darkest time. The ending is very hopeful, if not completely “happy” so no need to worry for their future! You’ll see what I mean if you read it. 

Other 

Hop, Skip, Jump by @merakilyy (G, 11k) - A fic to satisfy your Yunmeng Shuangjie feels and needs. Told through JC’s POV, it follows his relationship with WWX at multiple points throughout his life. Its focused on JC being happy, which I love. I also love how the author chose to address their reconciliation. Despite the fact that they are never going to be able to go back to how it “used to be,” WWX still knows how to put a smile on JC’s face. 

Important Distinctions by @nicole-penn (G, 5k) - A junior-centric fic where they discover a book in the Jingshi detailing all of LWJ’s microexpressions. The juniors don’t know who wrote it, but they can tell that this person really loved LWJ. Despite it taking place mostly during the 13 yr gap, it is a light and humorous fic for those who like to see junior shenanigans and also of course shows the love WWX has for LWJ. And don’t fret! WWX does show up at the end. ;)

Kinda on the subject of people not liking wangxian in fanfics. Every once in a while I'm scrolling through trying to find something and I see a description saying "LWJ cheated on WWX!!!" and I'm just like what??? Did they not understand his character or do they just want to write some form of relationship drama and that's all they can come up with??? But what gets me is that it always seems to be LWJ who is the cheater.

Sometimes some fics have a plot where there was a previous arranged marriage or something so WWX should be off the market but he falls in love with LWJ anyway, and I guess that's technically cheating, but it is usually an arranged political marriage and not a love match. Then LWJ comes along, the drama of the fic happens, and true love wins in the end. Definitely an AU but it's at least a bit believable of their characters.

But whenever it's pre established relationship wangxian and someone cheats it's LWJ. Or if they "fall out of love" it's because of how cold LWJ turns toward WWX after a while and then WWX finds someone who actually loves him. And I just don't understand if these people are talking about the same characters I read about. The LWJ I know indulges and loves WWX so much I just don't get it.

(and semi on the topic of "WWX should experiment" because they just want him to find a girl because they are homophobic. My pet peeve is when only one of the characters gets gender swapped.)

So some of it is just people not understanding that relationships don’t need drama to be romantic and fulfilling to read about. Some of it is that people want to tell tropey stories without considering whether or not it fits the characters. Some of it is because people refuse to get to know poor LWJ and decide to do the time honored tradition across thousands of fandoms and lead couples that have more or less chemistry than wangxian, usually less, and demonize the less liked member of the relationship so as to make their preferred ship look better by comparison.

I think the reason why LWJ tends to get more of it than WWX is that he is a bit harder to read at the start and people can more easily take WWX at face value in any of the works and miss the ways in which LWJ is easier to read with time and how WWX deflects and lies to the reader at points too. I notice that most all of these fics tend to consider WWX very differently than the book presents to us too.

They probably aren’t interacting with the characters! At least not anymore. Do any of those fics look in character in the slightest? MDZS is a popular, active fandom and this is often the double edged sword of that fact. Fics like this that are written are sometimes written by people who have never even touched the original works. They see some gif sets, read the wiki and they’re off from there. I figure it’s the price of entry into a big fandom like this and automatically ignore any fic that does that because it will never, ever be in character.

(I have seen it done well, but rarely and I agree that it’s almost always homophobic. Definitely the way it’s presented has always been off putting to me. Especially the stories that do nothing but change the sex and character of just one of a queer couple and refuse to do any other examination of what that changes, same with the insistence on experimentation, a relationship isn’t a hobby and if you find one that makes you happy on your first try, what’s wrong with that?)

I saw a post about asexual!Wangxian headcanons and I adore it?? Like I’ve never needed to be validated about my asexuality but it’s nice that people in the fandom (which has explicit sexual scenes in the novel) have these kinda thoughts about the main characters. I guess I don’t need to be validated but it feels great when I am. Like the thought that Wei Wuxian isn’t sexually attracted to anyone (including Lan Wangji) but still enjoys the sex with his husband and has romantic attraction? I love it. Lan Wangji being graysexual? I can totally see it and love that too. It’s nice being able to see parts of yourself in beloved characters I guess. Also the whole “everyday means everyday” not being JUST about sex, but about loving your partner everyday for the rest of your life? I’d like to sincerely thank people making those headcanons.

i'm happy those headcanons make you feel like so, but you're prob telling me this bc 1) i make it no secret that i'm demi and this is in solidarity and 2) soliciting my opinion

so here's my opinion (after giving this a long, hard think) bc something about this was itching at me in the wrong way.

i've answered an ace/demi jc ask before, and that's basically how i feel about any 'resonant' headcanon on sexuality.

after a decent length's journey through fandom, life, and my own sexuality (that is still ongoing because i'm not dead yet), my current conclusion is that "I don't need fandom to validate my asexuality, and i am ambivalent to others doing it for me". if there's a well-written, non-hateful, compelling work that sells it one way, great! if there's one that goes the complete opposite way, sure! that is the true litmus test, bc otherwise it just feels like a bunch of caricatures/stereotypes being cobbled together.

(i agree there is a bunch of SEX in the fandom. it is a bit refreshing to read something different, along the same personal wavelength)

(a fave is this... uh, incomplete ABO fic where both wwx and lwj are betas that have to wrangle all the hormone-addled disciples around them. it's hilarious, it's amazing, it somehow works)

the thing i'm not overly fond of is the assignation of labels to these characters, esp to characters in the context of the canon setting (with its historical/cultural whatevers words words i'm tired) these labels mean nothing. esp w a fandom that has such a big culture clash between fans of different origins, any headcanon is just... idk it begs careful assessment that it's not an inappropriate imposition of a viewpoint that disregards the origin of the work. and that's not getting into how complicated sexuality and its expression can be, how it can be expressed in its given environment dictating what observers would label it as, and the fact that it's a novel.

idk characters i love don't have to be for me nor represent me. bc if i get annoyed enough that's when i write my own way.

and us being on the ace spectrum doesn't preclude us from homophobia, you know? sometimes people are loud and proud and have tons of sex and want all of that, and that's perfectly ok too. <- a lot of my thoughts on this growing up had to be detangled from "is this learned, unconscious homophobia, or am i rightfully being bothered?"

y'know, like the forever struggle of "is this internalized misogyny or is this woman actually terrible?"

tldr: i don't engage in other people's headcanons unless presented in fanfic format, fictional people written by hobbyists aren't a stand-in for validating any part of my identity, sexuality is not permanent and ever-changing and is a personal thing that cannot be assigned by others.

please tell me everything about yanxiyao. i am invested. nay, i am obsessed. an ot3 made up entirely of people who Deserved Better and they are GETTING IT. i don’t care if it’s deep, agonizing 3AM thoughts that make me question how i think about life and love and the mortifying ordeal of being known or if it’s pointless fluffbits scrounged up from your daydreams. GIVE THEM TO ME

AHA, this delighted me, I’m so glad!! [rubs hands] Okay, you have unlocked the avalanche, stream of consciousness, here we go. Boy howdy this got long, so full rambling under the cut. 

So I’ve already outlined how it starts with JGY, but you’ve probably seen that and I’m probably going to actually write a getting together fic at some point if the scenes start falling out of the sky into my head, so I’ll skip past that for the time being and start with the beginning of the triad. It begins in a most definite V with JGY as the hinge--Xichen and Yanli are very careful and considerate about each other’s time with him and try very hard not to overlap. Most things are separate--sex times, dates, meals (unless it’s everyone [siblings, et. al] eating together), sleepovers. 

However, something happens. Perhaps JGY starts asking to spend a day with both of them, perhaps the greeting conversations when Xichen visits grow longer and warmer and bleed into sitting together over tea, laughing, and forgetting the days plans. Perhaps the way Xichen delights in holding their daughter and playing so very patiently with her begins to completely charm Yanli.

Perhaps it’s when Yanli and JGY leave the toddler with Wen Qing and Jiang Cheng to go for a nice leisurely trip together to Gusu but the weather turns and they have to stay in an inn in the middle of nowhere overnight and Yanli’s health takes a sharp dive all of a sudden and JGY sends a Jin butterfly to tell Xichen the situation and that they’re going to be late. And it’s only after he’s sent it that it comes to his attention that this rinky-dink village’s doctor actually lives in the next city over and is out of town for his daughter’s wedding or something idiotic and won’t be back for days--he has learned this after a slog through the rain to said doctor’s empty house in said next-city-over and then returned to demand of the innkeeper what exactly he’s playing at, sending him out like that when he knew the doctor wasn’t there. And he’s in the process of not strangling the innkeeper when the door bursts open and it’s Xichen, completely waterlogged and anxious and JGY is appalled that he’s just flown through a thunderstorm but secretly very, very relieved he is here. 

And so they go upstairs and Yanli is incredibly happy to see both of them, especially since her fever has gotten worse and she is freezing. She wants snuggles and JGY reasons that they should both get in on it, because more body heat, y’know (he’s only trying to help, there are limited options, here) but he and Xichen both are completely soaked from traveling in the rain and they hesitate. Yanli is very much, ‘Oh noooo, the 2 hot men who need to snuggle me are covered in wet cloooothes?? Whatever shall we doooo?’ And the both of them are very seriously trying to tell her that Xichen will need to take off his robes if they’re going to be in bed together and is she okay with that and she’s like, ‘WhaAaaAaat? 😲 Holy cow, I guess I’ll suffer through :3c’ And they laugh and snuggle and sleep and the next few days is them taking care of her while she apologizes for getting sick and ruining the trip while they maintain that this is very nice, actually, minus her feeling terrible. They don’t actually visit Gusu and just end up spending time together in the inn while she recovers.

So, after that, Yanli and Xichen’s relationship becomes a lot more physically affectionate--they hug when they see each other, they kiss each other on the cheek, Yanli and JGY both snuggle up to his sides when they sit alone on the pavilion with the curtains drawn. The both of them have talked separately with JGY about whether this is okay, whether they’re overstepping any boundaries, and his response was basically an incredulous, ‘Are you joking? This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me.’ And so the 3 of them spend more and more time together, and maybe there’s a night where they’re all in Xichen’s guest room at Lotus Pier, maybe having a few drinks, and they get onto the subject of how good of a kisser their A-Yao is and he protests saying that they’re biased because they haven’t kissed anyone else, so how could they know. And Xichen flushes and grins, “Aren’t you sly?” and JGY blinks innocently and says, “I don’t know what on earth you could mean 😇!” and Yanli is biting back a laugh and also a little pink but tilts her chin up invitingly and they do kiss and it’s lovely and JGY realizes exactly how much he enjoys that. And from then on, the Xichen’s guest room is more of a formality/decoy than anything else and their suite just so happens to get updated with a bigger bed because, y’know, reasons.

✨Vibes✨:

-WangXian matchmaking happens in earnest when YanXiYao first start their arrangement because now JGY has a concrete reason to find more excuses for more frequent visits from the Twin Jades

-Something about the 2 of them together makes it so that JGY can break down more easily--when it’s just Yanli, he still feels very protective and it’s hard to show his anger. When it’s just Xichen, he doesn’t want to cause him pain, and it’s hard to show when he’s hurting and despairing. When the three are together he is able to let them hold him more easily instead of withdrawing and isolating himself, and it frustrates him, but is also very good for him. 

-Xichen and Yanli have a very intense and deep affection for each other that rides the fuzzy line of romantic and alterous; they enjoy cuddling, kissing, they definitely aren’t averse to having sex with each other but it usually happens when JGY is involved in some way, whether everyone participates or it’s a voyeuristic situation in whatever capacity (though this may be impacted by the fact that he doesn’t live with them and most days, Yanli is pleasantly lukewarm about sexual activity in general, so who’s to say it wouldn’t happen naturally, in time?) 

-Xichen and Yanli have a relationship that has grown beyond just what they have with JGY and have a wonderful time talking together, giving each other gifts, and exchanging letters. There is a shared exasperation for JGY’s treatment of his health and often look to each other as back up (JGY is annoyed. They simply smile.) They don’t feel the need to really categorize their relationship besides the fact that they love each other, consider the other their best friend, are deeply fond of one another, and plan to all stay as they are for the rest of their lives. (Maybe, eventually, this will lead to a secret marriage ceremony, just for the 3 of them).

-It was after the inn/fever incident that she insisted Xichen call her A-Li

-All 3 have a devious streak and it makes for some very sweet 2 ganging up on 1 and showering them with kisses and affection.

-JGY and Yanli write him joint letters as well as individual ones of their own 

-JGY and Yanli view Xichen as an equal status, commuter sort of parent and ask for his opinions and advice on parenting things. Xichen loves the kids like his own and gets to essentially have a kid without the complicated feelings of them being his heir and going through the Lan’s strict practices and corporal punishment. He takes them at Cloud Recesses for a few weeks every year.

-Each of the men have their own guilt attacks, now and again, Xichen about his involvement being selfish (Heirs! Propriety! His uncle!) and JGY over wanting too much (Infidelity! Reputation! A-Li!), and Yanli--who has done enough soul searching and has very comfortably decided that, no, she is quite fine being happy--calmly sits them down, gives them tea, kisses their foreheads, and makes them hold hands with her as they watch their kids play.
