The Gay Ghost first appeared in Sensation Comics #1 (January 1941). It was the same issue that introduced Wonder Woman.

In his back story set in Ireland in the 1700s, Keith Everet, the Earl of Strethmere, is killed as he is on his way to propose to his beloved. After his death, he encounters his ancestors, who return him to life in return for a vow to fight for justice.

Years later DC Comics retroactively changed his name to the Grim Ghost. Is this another case of corporate America trying to erase LGBT history?

Hmmm so I saw an old, 1940's DC character called The Gay Ghost and immediately found that funny, but then I considered, would I find it so funny if it was The Straight Ghost or some other name that had straight in it? And the answer is no. See, when the word gay gained it's double meaning, it quickly became a weird only used to describe orientation and the previous meaning (happy) got quickly abandoned because straight people didn't want to associate themselves in any way with queerness.

However, when the word straight gained its double meaning to refer to orientation, the previous meanings stayed because there was no such taboo with associating with straightness. And to this day, people laugh when they see old books use the word gay with its original meaning but don't when they see the word straight used in the same way. So why do so many people, including progressives, find the word gay funny? Why are we still stuck in the same mindset as conservatives who go "Haha, gay! It's funny because it's gay!" Something to think about, I guess.
