#the height of the omgcp fandom and the height of my time in this fandom is something I remember super fondly :)

In late 2017, not long after I finished posting Better With Time, I had a thought similar to the plot of that story: what if Jack and Bitty were childhood friends? I dismissed the idea at first, because it seemed just a reiteration of BWT, but the idea wouldn’t leave me alone. My dear friend @luckiedee and I had just gone to Pittsburgh for the first time, so I thought what if they were childhood friends IN Pittsburgh?

The idea stuck in my mind for a while and eventually got legs. How would Bitty react when his best friend Jack’s left for juniors? How would Bitty react to Jack’s OD? I was sure this was a Bitty POV because I always write his POV, and it’s a default for me. I wrote an outline and forgot about it, because it wasn’t working.

In 2019 I was working out the outline, trying to fix it, when I realized this wasn’t Bitty’s story. This is Jack’s story. I rewrote the outline and got as far as prologue introducing Alicia and Suzie because this started when Jack and Bitty were babies. I wrote half the prologue and abandoned it again, because again, it wasn’t working.

Then the pandemic happened, and my own anxiety and depression reached a height it hadn’t since I was in college. I started medication and while it did wonders for my symptoms, it zapped all my creativity and left me unable to write. I didn’t write or post anything for 2 years. I was left wondering if my time in the omgcp fandom was over and if I’d go the rest of my life without getting this fic out of my head.

And then earlier this year I started seeing a naturopathic doctor who took me off the medication and into some alternative therapy that made me feel better, but more importantly brought creativity back. I wrote Across the Pool in a day, and decided to try the Jack prequel again. It was a rough for a few days until I realized this isn’t Jack’s entire life, this is a novelization of The Hockey Prince with a few of my own ideas thrown in there.

I finished the first draft today. 5 years after I first thought of it and 2 years after I was convinced I would never write again, I got 140K words on paper.

I’ll read it over and make my edits, then start posting once I feel it’s a cohesive piece. I just wanted to take a second and acknowledge this accomplishment. I hope you like it, and I hope if you are in a place you don’t want to be, then you, like me and Jack, can take the step to get yourself out of it.

1. What fandom(s) are you reading these days?

I’m on a Batman/DCU kick– mainly anything Jason Todd related. I’ve read the ParentHood verse, I’ve read Minimum Height Requirement and am working on the verse. Basically fuck Batman, long live Red Hood. 

2. What fandom(s) have you given up?

OMGCP. The fandom is entirely too much. Also Kent character study and Kent/Happiness seem to be in ever dwindling supply, and that was my fandom life blood. 

Otherwise, Merlin, Bleach (I come back to the 8/13 ‘verse at least annually, as well as Breathing Lessons), Naruto (seriously, Dirt and Ashes and Pulling My Weight are my tethers to fandom here), along with a handful of other fandoms that were so small I qualified as a BNF/bitch in fandom. 

7. What kind of fic is your favourite? 

Anything that explores consequences and nuances. Part of why I love Embers is that it looks at the stuff that’s brushed off in A:TLA and takes it to the logical end. Which hurts and sucks and is fucked up enough to create a robust Fridge Horror subpage. The other fics I’ve linked also poke at this sort of handwaving and force actual consequences. I can’t write this stuff myself, which only adds to my love and admire for it. 

12. What makes you recommend a fic to everyone you know?

Ok paragraphs and good grammar/spelling– it needs to be readable

Interesting plotine– either new to fandom plotlines or masterclass versions of the common ones. 

Solid characterization– I’m a little more forgiving in AUs, because different experiences and expectations lead to reactions that differ from canon. Give me enough to understand why and I’ll back your changes.

Not required but– grey areas. Enough of them that on rereading I find my reactions changing. Circling back to Embers, I’ve grown enough that each time I reread it I find a new nuance to appreciate and enhance my enjoyment. Currently, Madam Wen talking to Suyin about lords and Zuko talking to Suyin about how to handle combat fatigue.

the character i least understand - Hmmm probably Dex or Nursey? Or I guess Whiskey or Tango but that’s because we don’t get to know a ton about them. I’ve seen a decent amount of fanon stuff about Dex and Nursey but I still don’t feel like I know them, yeah? 

interactions i enjoyed the most - Ummmmm def the first Zimbits kiss i mean that was ICONIC and I didn’t know about it before it happened so I was so pumped. Also every zimbits moment since then. I love the moments when Shitty and Jack are palling around also the time Lardo destroyed Kent at party games was good. 

the character who scares me the most - Huh this is a strange question but I feel like Coach Bittle scares me. not in the “he’s gonna kick my ass” kinda way but in the “it worries me that he might not be accepting of his gay son” kind of way. And I mean if I saw the SMH coming towards me i’d prob be intimidated ngl but I don’t really hang around with sports boys so that’s that

the character who is mostly like me - Probably Bitty in most ways, though we don’t act terribly similar (and I care way more about making high grades lmao) but I think we both are really worried about what other’s think of us and want to make other people happy

one thing i dislike about my fave character - Hmm I can’t really pick a fav but I’d prob go with Bitty. I really like him as a character in general like I mean he’s flawed but those flaws are relatable. I guess I wish he were more confident in his life direction but i mean there’s tons of people who don’t know what they’re doing at 20 and that’s perfectly fine it’s more like me worrying for him lmfao. I dunno this one is hard. 

one thing i like about my hated character - I also don’t really have hated characters for omgcp, just ones that I’m apathetic towards? Like I don’t dislike Dex, but I don’t super care for him, and I do like that he’s mechanical and he is pretty open to what people say to him, I guess? I thought he was gonna be more close minded than he is. 

a quote or scene that haunts me - I mean it doesn’t haunt me exactly, but I’ve revisited the Parse scenes like 129321749128 times because he really grew on me due to the fandom/fanon version so I’ve developed a lot of my own feelings and opinions on Kent and I’ve had to look back and see what was actually said in canon sooooo many times.
