Trapped Towers Dev History ~ How We Got Here (Final Part)

CORRECTION FOR PART 2: THE TRAPPED TOWERS REBOOT ANNIVERSARY IS IN MAY. I THOUGHT IT WAS JUNE. NO IT IS MAY 15TH. I GASLIT MYSELF FOR OVER A YEAR WHAT.

Hey again everybody !!

So we reached the beginning of the current stage of Trapped Towers last time, the official beginning to the reboot in May 2021. This final part will cover a bit less I do think, mainly because a lot of the old/scrapped content I think I'd like to go a bit more in-depth with in seperate posts. However, there's still stuff to go through. It's gonna be a lot less story of Trapped Towers and a bit more sappy emotional though, hope you all don't mind.

So, for the final time in this mini series - lets hope into it shall we?

May 2021 - Present ~ The New Trapped Towers:

I will always remember those first few months of the new TeamT VERY VERY fondly. It wasn't perfect, we weren't all fully motivated, but we sure were making progress slowly. TeamT was always very chaotic - and sure some of it hasn't aged great and isn't the best to look at, I should have cut some stuff instantly and cut ties with others quick - but nights like staying in voice call with some of the best team members I could have asked for just screwing about, playing video games and screensharing it in about the worst way, and coming up with some amazing ideas for the project. I'll remember those fondly.

Stuff like this is what makes projects like this worth it. The memories and friends - as corny as that is.

But hey, you're here for the story, not for the sappy "the real trapped towers was the friends we made along the way" schpiel. So, what happened in the months from the Trapped Towers reboot beginning? Well, we worked. We made songs. We made new concepts, new art, and more. The story I'd written made - and I won't say who and if they out themselves AGAIN it's their own fault - made somebody CRY. Have you ever made somebody cry from a story you've written. The initial thoughts is "oh no they're crying, that's sad I didn't wanna make them sad" but very quickly the giddyness hits.

Emotional aspects of storytelling are one of the things I've been wanting to hit for ages. To have somebody connect to a character and their story to a point where it brings genuine emotion - it's the best. Not only for the reader's attatchment and immersion, but to you. To know you managed to create a story that compelling that it caused that. I won't drag this out much longer, but it's really something I'm aiming for with Trapped Towers and I do hope to get you all with some of these plot points.

Back to the timeline though, things began to slow further around November, with most things basically halting in December - though shoutout to the artists and musicians who carried us that whole time. January was a break month, February we hoped to be back in action but things didn't quite resume for a while. April picked it up a little more, with new art and concepts and writing happening, but not much else.

It's not a satisfying end to this story is it. We just kind of... died off.

But it's not the end, is it?

This was something I said in the team general channel in February 2022 and I still hold by it to this day. Trapped Towers has been a major part of my life since the day it was first made, and it always will be. I'm forever grateful for how things have turned out, even if it feels like the project never gets anywhere.

So until the day comes where I can release this, I'll keep posting, writing etc. I will keep working until it happens no matter how long it'll take. That's the end of the timeline and sappy stuff for now though. Lets go through some content.

Content Highlights:

(TO NOTE A LOT OF OLD CONTENT IS MADE BY VARIOUS OLD TEAM MEMBERS AS WELL AS MYSELF. @/evilredyoshis like usual, JackInASack who I believe does not have tumblr, Mojo, StellarDee, and many many more names I wish I could list. A full Trapped Towers credits list will happen one day, every name who was involved will be respected and honoured <3)

Y'know instead of "old content" this time, we've got highlights instead. Some of it will be old yes, but there's too much overlap with yesterday for me to just show old content because then there'd be barely anything.

Y'know I put that a lot of this was made by old team members, and yeah especially in the soundtrack more people appear but a lot of this art is done by Madeline PFFTT. Shoutout to her once again @/evilredyoshis she was actually the goat of TeamT. Did so so much.

There's SO SO much content I could share here and I would love to share it ALL. Unfortunately I don't want to ram this post with too much. If we do get a game out of this, I'll be sure to include a gallery with EVERYTHING.

There's also a lot of great animatics done. You can guess who by at this point. I have already got permission from her to use her old work for all these posts, so I'll likely do a post dedicated to the relevant/appropriate ones and explaining a bit behind them.

But seriously to end this off, I just want to say again how grateful I am for everyone and everything that has happened to Trapped Towers in these past 6 years. To anyone who sees this if you were a part of TeamT, still (technically) are a part of it despite how nobody is really doing anything besides me lol, or if you've just been following the project. Thank you. Thank you so much.

My 2022 summary of art! 🙌 I could not decide to single out any one drawing in November, it was two challenges at once (cowboyvember and comfortember) and Aladdin's 30th anniversary!

It's been a difficult year and not an easy one...

But let me briefly describe my emotions and feelings that I experienced every month while drawing!

January

Here the symbol of the year 2022 is the tiger. Who could it be? Of course Raja

February

I made a drawing-questionnaire of my character back in October 2021. Her name is Taisiya and she is from my humble Hercules au (next post about it, apparently)

March

Those of you who have read the short story about Jasmine's birthday ball that I posted earlier know what I'm talking about. I just love them! This plot (about the birthday) was already realized closer to May, and during March I had one big plot in my head, in which I mixed Anastasia of 1997, Encanto and all this in Aladdin.

Cat-hussar that I drew in my little sister's sketchbook! he's just cute and a hussar, this is it

Feeling the approach of summer, I was carried away to the sea in May. And I drew Ariel, dreaming about it. Also at this time, I learned about the musical by my adored Percy Jackson and this added to my sea attraction

This is my first complete drawing on a tablet. I'm as a half-blood, Poseidon's daughter.

I drew this on my mom's T-shirt! Unfortunately, the picture turned out to be not dense and began to quickly lose its brightness.

September 2021 made me remember and love Hercules again. September 2022 made me remember Back to the Future and how much I love it! I was sad because of school, because of the end of summer, because of the song "The Last Day of Summer" from the musical Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief on August 31st...but then BOOM! 🎶IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TI-AAAAAME🎶 The musical woke up the bttf fan in me!

I started posting on tumblr! Rewatched all parts of bttf, and met @daryfromthefuture ! perhaps the best thing that happened to me this year, I was incredibly happy that I found a person who also loves bttf!!! ANNIVERSARY OF BACK TO THE FUTURE OH YEAH

Challenges time!!!🤠✍🏻🍂 I also got my ao3 account and published the first fic!!! I was invited to the bttf server in discord and oh my god I met amazing people! November - 30th anniversary of Aladdin🧞‍♂️!

December

I still don’t have snow, but the festive atmosphere was created by tumblr and the people from discord. Our secret Santa, Christmas bingo cards, Christmas itself - everything was so cool!!! I thank them very much❤️

There are a couple of days left until the new year, and I expect only good things from it! Happy 2023!

my body has been wracked with grief since the shooting at Club Q on Trans Day of Remembrance, exactly 42 years after the shooting in Greenwich at multiple gay bars. That it happened in the same week a gay bar in nyc has had a brick thrown through their window 3 times. for all the moments we don’t make the news for.

i don’t have anything transformative to say and i’m beyond empty. yet, i still find myself dreaming through death and massacre and criminalization,

of a world we kiss our lovers and friends not worrying it’ll be the last

of a world where you get home safe, a world where you got home safe.

I crocheted this cat-approved hue shift for a friend’s 40th birthday last year.

I’m working on a second hue shift for another friend right now, and after I was done crocheting all the squares, I realized I screwed up the pattern in a way that’s gonna be a pain in the butt to fix and I’m still grumpy about it. So I’m posting this one to remind myself (and you!) that even if something’s not perfect it’ll still be good. 🌈💛

commentary below:

January - I made this when I needed an icon for my new wiz blog. I didn't have a pen though so I did it with my finger lol

February - I was obsessed with the divine paradox look!! I was still learning the ins and outs of digital so I colored all the flats by hand....... but I also remember being very proud of this

March - I drew SO MUCH stuff this month, but some of my favorite works were the little comic pages. I'd do more if they didn't take so long and if I actually had a story to tell

April - Full Mellori hype mode. I had a lot of fun with this even though I had to scrap the first concept and start over

May - Malorn brainrot came out swinging. I did this one on my computer, which has been broken this past year so that everything looks yellow on my screen. So let it be known I genuinely didn't know he was so pale until I looked at the post on my phone 😭

June - A piece from the scrapped wiz calendar. Looking back at this, I'm not sure how well it would do on paper (it seems too dark - i'd have to readjust the values). Tbh I'd still do wiz calendar if other people helped

July - Big art block summer but I wanted to paint something, so I chose pirate aquila. If only the quests were as good as the aesthetics... (hot take: the harpies are worse than the bumballoons)

August - Not much art because my mom was diagnosed w/ cancer and spent the month in the hospital (she is ok now). But i did manage to get some pirate sessions in! A lot of just sitting around and watching people's fits for inspo

September - Quick thing based on a photo i took last November from my old dorm, painted while moving into my new one

October - Trying to get back into the 101 obsession with good old Bonnie Anne

November - Based on a photo I took at school

December - Lowkey cheating because I actually did 95% of this in April, but i fixed it up a little December sooooo I say it counts? There are a *lot* of things I'd change about it now but it's still a vibe, also first time I drew 2 of my wizards interacting I think?

So this was the most I've EVER drawn. I took a long break (2017-end 2021), so January was the first time in literal years that I sat down to draw something, let alone post it publicly. The 101 community on tumblr has been so nice + tolerant of my brainrot that I really enjoy putting my stuff out there as a way to tell myself I'll stop messing with something lol.

Stylistically, I took a big leap. I learned with traditional media and I was taught in a more realism-oriented way, so trying to figure out what I wanted to do was super challenging... This explains why none of my stuff really looks the same, even after a year lol (and you can kinda see the traditional vibe in Jan.? Maybe?)

But anywayyy if you read all this, tell me: what fandom do you think I first started drawing for? I am SO curious what vibe I have

I managed to completely forget I posted goals on Tumblr last January (I knew it was on a Discord, where I was pointedly ignoring it since...yeah. well. about that.) but I found it while looking for something else, and I might as well take a glance back.

Goals I set for 2022:

Personal Goals from 2022:

Get My Back Fixed: victory, to the extent that victory was possible. I had back surgery on Feb 7th, and that fixed the primary issue (spinal stenosis caused by a herniated disc). My arthritis still exists and flares every couple months but my doc already told me that's just gonna be the rest of my life. Since that part isn't fixable...well, at least the surgery helped.

Keep Losing Weight: I was up and down throughout the year, and ended up pretty much exactly where I started, at about 180.

Exercise: I maintained a regular stretching/exercise regimen, including a fair amount of walking and even a little jogging, from March through November. I slipped in November, but I started again last week, so...yeah.

Study Chinese: almost 100% success! At least I didn't fall down in every regard, lmao. I study for about 45 minutes every day, across 3 apps. I finished Duolingo's core curriculum and have a streak of over 450 days going atm. I bought a year subscription to DuChinese so I could practice reading and it's really helping my vocabulary. I didn't manage to do much of any translation but eh, I'll take it.

Community Goals from 2022:

Encourage Others to Create: I ran May Trope Mayhem again, and really stepped up the creation/publishing end of my business. I'll take it. I didn't manage to do anything with the kink memes and I've been waffling on just shutting them down tbh.

Keep Up the Destiel Archive: basically a complete fail. Like, the archive still exists and I answer asks and DMs and send people stuff but I've done basically zero upkeep/expansion/work on it.

Duck Prints Press: we managed 3 anthologies (two are technically not published yet but they will be in like a week and a half and all the work was done in 2022 so I'll count it). We didn't manage a novel, but we did publish a novella and like 20 short stories, so I'll call it a win.

Creative Goals from 2022:

Post Every Day: I managed about two weeks, and haven't written anything for myself since June, so yeah, uh. Yeah.

Work on WIP: nope

Make Progress on The Long Road: ...I thought about it on and off, does that count?

Post One Art Piece a Month: I might have technically actually succeeded at this? but not in way I know I intended when I set the goal and honestly, whatever.

Fibercraft: I didn't manage to cosplay anything - we don't really have the money - but I've definitely been doing fibercraft. I did a mess of crocheting last winter (and need to finish those projects now that it's cold again), and I did a lot of cross stitch over the summer and fall, and I'm currently working on a quilted wall hanging, so. Yeah. I'd call this one a success.

So...definitely a mixed bag. My kids ended up needing a lot more of me than I was expecting, especially over the summer and fall when I'd expected things to ease up, so that didn't help. And the business growing is just eating the entire rest of my life. I've definitely semi-intentionally decided to give up on some of the side projects and step back. Like, I don't like that I'm not doing anything on the Destiel archive, but I've basically come to accept it and I don't expect it to change. In my post last year, I wrote "I sacrificed a lot of my personal creative goals to make the business a success and ya know, I'm basically okay with it." And that really resonates, cause I'd absolutely say the same thing is true of this year. The business IS doing well - we earned more money than last year, and from far more diversified sources. I didn't earn enough to take a paycheck...again...but we're also less in the hole for 2022 than we were for 2021, and it really truly feels like things are moving in a good direction and that the work I'm putting in is accomplishing something. 2023 looks bright in that regard.

I'm honestly trying to move away from big declarative ambitious goals. They just make me feel like I've failed. So I haven't put tons of thought into my 2023 beyond "keep doing the things I'm doing that are working, and try to add in a few things that I haven't been succeeding at but would like to. So, with this entire post plus that in mind, my goals for 2023 are...

Personal Goals

Continue Exercising: I slipped on exercise in November and December. It was definitely doing me good before that so I'd like to keep it up. My goals for a while have been 10 to 20 minutes of stretching/Yoga/floor exercises 5 or 6 days a week, and a minimum of 2,000 steps a day every day, and I hit that very consistently until mid-November, so I think I can resume it now that the holidays are over and the kids are heading back to school on Wednesday.

Study Chinese: just. keep it up. I'd really like to work on a translation project this year. I've been eyeing the Tian Guan Ci Fu manhua (I own volume one in print), continuing my translation of the 2ha manhua (which is online), and/or poking at the Lie Huo Jiao Chou manhua, which is on the Bilibili app and has been taunting me from my favorited comics for ages. But if I just spend another year like I spent 2022, drilling HSK 1 through 3 until I've got them down pat and continuing the slow vocab expansion through DuChinese, I'll take it. It's getting the job done.

Community Goals

Figure out what to keep up and what to step back from: I really haven't been able to do a good job on everything, and I've put some balls down and can't say I'm terribly interested in picking them back up. I'd like to make more of that official in 2023, so I don't feel like I'm being pulled in as many directions, and so that the changes feel intentional and therefore More Okay instead of semi-accidental and accepted with resignation.

Art Sideblog Goals: I'm pretty behind on maintenance of cnovelartreblogs especially; I'd like to really get that organized, and to finally launch the Discord I've been building on-and-off for almost a year. I'd also like to get my backlog of things to blog under 10k, but honestly that's probably ambitious. I had it down a lot this year, but it's surged up since the twitterpocalypse and the holidays (though I'm still well ahead of where I was at the start of 2022, so that's something).

Duck Prints Press:

have 4 anthologies in the works (we already have two in the works for 2023; I expect those two to publish, and I'd like us to have 2 more in the pipeline even though they likely won't publish until 2024)

publish at least 52 short stories (a minimum of one a week)

publish at least 4 novels (I've got two in progress so I'm pretty optimistic on this one)

$40k+ in gross earnings

take a paycheck (even if it's only for royalties on sales of my own work)

publish one story a month of my own work

Creative Goals

Read 12 Books for Leisure: I set this goal in 2022 and while I technically hit it (Goodreads says I read like 70-something books), I only actually read 11 novel-length books because I wanted to. The rest was either manhua, or stuff I read for the Press. So, I've set my Goodreads goal as 72 works, with the understanding that at least 52 will be those short stories I'll edit, and I'm also considering signing up for a book bingo that a friend participates in on Dreamwidth. I don't think I'll have trouble meeting this goal tbh; even if I just read the Seven Seas danmei pubs, which I absolutely intend to, I'll probably hit it (considering I'm several volumes behind on both MDZS and TGCF...). Even if I don't, I'll be close like last year.

Write Something Each Week: I made a list of prompts for myself and ships I want to write for, and I want to try to write something for each prompt each week (in whatever order). Even if I don't finish a single one of them. Even if I hate it all. I just want to keep going on it. I also want to write one short story suitable for publication each month, probably pwp kink fic. (Week 1 is Hualian/were-creature, and I did work out an idea I don't hate...)

Fibercraft: I started blankets for the kids last winter; I'd like to finish at least one of them. And just. Keep making things. It's good for my brain. Much better than the like 6 weeks I spent this year rotting my brain with Merge Dragons at night. *sweat drop*

Anyway, I wouldn't say any of these are resolutions, since most of it is stuff that's already going on. It's really more "I've got the boat sailing the direction I want, now let's just...keep that up..."

Also, it'd be really nice to not be fucking exhausted all the time. That'd help. Just saying. *weary sigh*

Do you think the next time the power goes out at the Wachowski residence Sonic will get freaked out because of his last terrifying experience with no lights? Like he thinks he sees Robitnik’s shadow again and high tails it over to Tom and Maddie’s room but tries to play it cool because he is most certainly not afraid and how dare you even think that—he was just checking to see if Ozzy was scared because we all know what a wuss he is. Right? Right!

given that Ultron learned about the Avengers from the internet I think it would be funny if the “God’s righteous man” comment is about some weird propaganda from a point while Steve was on ice and Steve has literally no idea what he’s talking about. he doesn’t respond to that because his whole brain is just ????????? about it. (the “pretending you can live without a war” bit he at least acknowledges slightly but he genuinely looks confused here.)

Steve has a whole separate list in his notebook for “ugh okay find out what someone said about me in [insert year here] because apparently it was Bad and it’s probably on the list of things I have to publicly denounce at some point.”

can’t believe it’s canon that the games are just based off of the characters ‘real life’ adventures

i now have a hc that sonic does have an apartment in station square but he basically never sleeps there, maybe once a month

he instead uses it as a storage shed for all of the merch people make of him

bc whats he gonna do, turn down a really cool mural the city made in his honor? no. hes gonna put that shit up in his living room. his friends call him egotistical but jokes on them, he looks cool as hell.

he also has

a freezer full of sonic popsicles. the fucked up ones. u know. (ty @sketchjii for reminding me these exist)

a fridge full of sports drinks with his face on the label. some officially sponsored, some knockoffs with 'socin the hengehog', who is a slightly lighter blue hedgehog. he thinks its hilarious

boxes upon boxes of frozen chili dogs, from every brand deal he's ever done who promised him a lifetime supply and are starting to sweat from making good on it

hoodies for humans that imitate his look (he loves the ones with fake ears and fake gloves. they look fucking hilarious on top of his own ears and gloves)

every variation of sonic plushie ever made. especially the deformed looking ones. the ugly ones are usually from knuckles. ("got you this. its like looking in a mirror right?" "hilarious.")

last i'll mention is he's even got a little eggman matryoshka doll that sits on his fridge. he just thinks its funny

if he ever dies young itll be a really fun museum exhibit. he gives one (1) apartment tour to some photographer who's way out of his depth but it's honestly kinda funny how nonchalant sonic is about all the merch of himself he collects

The post I made about Lwaxana Troi showed me how many people like her, which is real because we love middle aged women who don't give a fuck, but honestly my favorite part about her character is the idea of "galaxy's most powerful telepath too self-centered to actually read others' minds"

I've read (very good!) fics where Garak or Bashir try to hide their enormous crush on the other from her, and frankly I don't think they'd need to. She assumes every person in the room is in love with her, and actively ignores all evidence to the contrary. She is possibly the person least likely to notice who others are attracted to because if it doesn't involve her, she doesn't care

What I dislike about Winn's ending: space pope fucks the antichrist

What I like about Winn's ending: Throughout the series, she has maintained her religiousness. We think of her as power hungry and narrow minded, but she gives every impression of sincerely viewing herself as a holy person. Then at the end it's revealed she's not, and she knows it: the prophets are speaking to everyone but her. But she wants to be spiritual! It really bothers her that she's not. She even swallows her pride enough to seek help from Kira.

And Kira tells her, she can have that relationship with the prophets, if only she gives up her power first

And Winn says no.

There's so much power in that moment of stripping away pretence. We and she have to face the truth about her values, that no matter how much her religion means to her, she'd rather have power than the gods she's known all her life.

Got my dad to watch mcc (scar pov) with me, here are some highlights of the occasion

he's colorblind and struggled telling teams apart, but appreciated color indicators on some blocks in games

did not understand survival games until he saw the border and then went "oh it's like fortnite!!"

asked questions about every ten seconds which was actually quite lovely, but included:

asking me how mcc teams are decided

asking me who scott smajor was no less than five times

asking me to explain the concept of hermitcraft.

did not care about the game chat until he realized that's where i was getting stats from and then started leaning as far forward as possible to read it

i don't think he ever really grasped the concept of rocket spleef. he had fun watching though

thought antfrost's skin was a bird

asked me if ace race was only for ace people (definitely trying to connect with me after i recently came out as ace. much appreciated, very sweet)

complained if people punched scar off during tgttos

asked if scar would be interested in coming to our family server to build

desperately wants minecraft slushies. i wouldn't be surprised if i joined the family server tomorrow to find he'd added a texture pack for them

i think his favorite game was meltdown, he got very excited about scar's killer aim

he says that most of the streamers he watches are british and hearing american accents on twitch was weird. ok

got happy every time scar wasn't last in team rankings for a game

guys he got so into dodgebolt. he was jumping up with every hit. he was very disappointed when i accidentally changed the channel during the second round and wouldn't let me touch the remote again. he actually cheered at the final shot

he didn't know anyone playing but he still really enjoyed it. he wants to watch again next time :)
