all those emotions aside - something i liked about episode 3 was the emphasis on surviving vs living.
you have people like bill who are survivalists. he's resourceful, stubborn, and self-sufficient - bill knows how to survive, he spent his whole life pre-outbreak preparing to survive. he's not a people person, he doesn't like relying on other people, and he can survive just fine by himself.
then he meets frank - and frank is the kind of person who knows how to live. frank eats meals like he's at a fancy restaurant, and spends just five more minutes in the shower, and sings songs out of key on bill's dusty old piano. he repaints the walls, and waters the flowers, and grows strawberries in the garden just so he can watch bill hide his giggle behind his hands when he tastes them. he uses bill's radio to make friends, and throw little garden parties, and he makes a code out of nostalgic old songs.
the reason bill and frank lived as long and as happily as they did, despite the outbreak and the solitude and frank's health - it's because they had that balance. yes, survival is important - you can't survive an apocalypse without bill's resourcefulness, or joel's construction knowledge, or tess and frank's networking - but surviving isn't living. bill lived and died happy because he let frank in past his (incredibly literal) defenses, because he let him paint portraits and grow flowers and hold him at night.
i saw a youtube comment earlier that i think got it right; in the game, bill was an example of who joel would become if he kept shutting people out, if he didn't allow himself to live. in the show, bill is an example of what joel could have, if he just let himself live and love, if he realised that all his walls and defenses mean nothing if he never has anybody to share it with.
for bill, that person was a husband. for joel, it just might be a daughter.

still thinking about how after showing the knife and telling this guy "you're next," Joel then makes direct fucking eye contact with him while stabbing his friend.

thinking about how joel was wringing his hands here. the amount of visible discomfort he felt when maria was offering hot showers, warm clothes, houses to stay in- something he was supposed to be able to offer to ellie
Tumblr media
he was dwelling in such denial over his fear of being an insufficient caretaker and guardian to the point of feeling physical stiffness in his body and over his face. to the point of claiming that they had been “doing just fine” because his mind couldn’t comprehend the antithesis of such. jackson was the physical embodiment of what he longed to give ellie- real comfort and security- and he struggled with this reality hammering into his head of just how self-sufficient this community was as opposed to him. he was responsible for ellie. he was meant to provide the best for her. and here was someone else who had procured and provided the necessities joel hadn’t come close to replicating

joel is ellie’s safety and ellie is joel’s weakness. joel makes ellie feel more safe than she’s ever been and ellie makes joel feel the most vulnerable. ellie cries when joel can’t help her and joel cries because he only fails ellie. i’m on the floor sobbing.

thinking a lot abt tess.
thinking abt her immediately parenting ellie, even when she can't be sure it's real, and even when joel is still ready to shoot her. thinking abt her knowing joel well enough to tell him to put his gun down from the other room, because she just knows he's raised it. thinking abt her treating joel so gently and calmly, even when his pessimism and anger is driving her mad, right up until the end. thinking abt how she was ready to get joel and ellie to the fireflies even knowing she couldn't continue on with them. thinking abt the pure panic when she realises they've gone, the way joel immediately knows something's wrong because tess has always been the calm one, tess is always keeping him from freaking out, what else could be wrong but the worst possible scenario? thinking abt "i never asked you for anything. not to feel the way i felt," right after joel refused to define their relationship to ellie, and right after slipping into bed at night to hold him but still getting up before him so he doesn't have to acknowledge it in the light of day - thinking of the way joel jolts to say something, to reassure her, and she immediately begs him not to. thinking about the terrible, longing look in joel's eyes before he leaves. thinking about "save who you can save", and joel accepting that tess will have to be another person he loved and watched this wasteland tear apart. thinking about the infection kissing her before joel ever did.
