Oh, have you read, "Dear Gene" by Azuma Kaya? It's also one of my favorite BL ever.... (Sorry if you already know it and don't really love them).

I can't put into words how happy it makes me that you liked Love for Sale... I don't think even Dal Hyeonji would feel this happy about someone liking their work SHFKUS but it's just SOO dear to me! Thank you for giving it a chance.

As for my top 5 moments.

The moment Namwoo finally realizes that he's the horndog in the relationship lol. From the moment they met, he's fixated on what he can provide for the money he's taking from Sieon, and since he's so rich and can literally buy anything he wants, there must be one thing and one thing only he wants from Namwoo: sex. Namwoo thinks Sieon must be a pervert for spending so much money on him (thus expecting a lot of sex in return) but it's actuallly him that constantly initiates sex. I kept waiting for the moment of realization!

The night Sieon went up to Namwoo's apartment to try his "toys". This is another favorite of mine because of how casual, funny and sexy at the same time. Still giggle whenever I remember Namwoo's middle finger action xD

Namwoo's realization that his sunbae was actually in love with him as well. I honestly didn't see this coming?! Probably because we never get to see his side of the story, and his "advances" could only be read as friendly invites. I should've been suspicious because I knew he picked up the nature of Namwoo and Sieon's relationship when they've first seen each other at the mall.

Namwoo and his sister Eunjung having a Love Declaration Olympics in the middle of a crowd. I mentioned in another answer that I love Eunjung for several reasons, and that scene is both so hilarious and emotional, I couldn't help but add it to the list. I love all of their interactions but this one probably takes the cake.

Sieon's blush. You know which chapter I'm talking about, right? xD I wouldn't believe you if you were to tell me that seeing a character blush after 70+ chapters would make me cry but here we are. This is top grade story-telling. Building everything up until such a "minor" point AND having a cathartic pay off, I can only bow down.

WHEW. Thank you for giving me another chance to gush about Love for Sale, because I feel self-conscious lol. I keep inserting the series whenever I get an ask or start blabbing unprovoked... Anyways. There were a lot more I liked about it, like our redhead with anger management issues looking back on his relationship with Sieon, or Namwoo's heartfelt convo with the female friend in his friend circle, OR Sieon reuniting with his mother. It's so hard to pick. But anyways, I'll stop here before I list anything and everything that transcribed in the series.

As for Dear Gene. I did read the parent manga, The Scene of My Rumspringa and liked it a lot! You can feel the weight and importance of the theme to the author, because only then you get a delicate story packed with emotions. Dear Gene was recommended to me as well, but I want to wait for the official English release because my Japanese is not at a level where I can comfortably read manga. I can get by with dictionaries and apps when the BL has your run of the mill story, I usually guess what's gonna happen from the very first chapter anyway. But BLs with deeper conversations and topics are hard to get through. I'll leave it to the translators and enjoy when I can. I'm looking forward to it!

親愛なるジーンへ (Dear Gene) by Azuma Kaya

I’m looking back on some of the most memorable BL manga I read in 2023 and copying/ expanding on some of my twitter threads about them to tumblr.

Dear Gene is a spinoff of the pretty well-known Amish themed BL manga The Scene of My Rumpspringa (ラムスプリングの情景) by Azuma Kaya. I know Amish BL might sound like a silly joke, but the series actually treats the subject very thoughtfully.

In Rumspringa we followed a young Amish man exploring the world beyond his community in the 80s. In Dear Gene, we follow another man from the same community, who ended up leaving his family and community for good in the 70s. All the things that made Rumspringa so memorable are present in Dear Gene as well: the nostalgic atmosphere, bittersweet emotions, lively characters and gorgeous art & storytelling.

I really like the story within a story structure: in the 90s, teenager Gene Edwards is sent to spend the summer at his uncle Trevor’s place in NY to help with chores. While cleaning up a room that has not been used in years, Gene accidentally stumbles upon an old diary that records Trevor’s romance with a guy who was also called Gene almost 20 years ago.

Most of the manga follows Trevor and Gene Walker’s story in the 70s, as recorded in the diary. Gene grew up as an Amish in Pennsylvania but decided to leave the community to look for his own place in the world. When he first meets Trevor, he is homeless and has nowehere to go. Trevor, who's a lawyer at the office where Gene works as a janitor, takes him in and slowly they fall in love.

Since we are following the story from an outsider’s perspective, we already know from the start that Gene W is no longer in Trevor’s life in the 90s. Thinking about what might have happened, already feeling sad and bittersweet about this while seeing the characters get together, and then gradually learning the truth about what happened all those years ago make it a very emotional reading experience that is well worth revisiting.

I think what really makes Dear Gene stand out is the way it treats the characters' individual journeys. It's very much a romance story, but the characters' family relationships and personal goals are just as important, if not more so, than the romantic relationship between Trevor and Gene.

That's why their inevitable separation is so impactful. There is no big drama or tragic events, just the simple notion that one person cannot be your whole world, that even though you love someone, your other dreams and goals in life might take you far away from them. And that when you love someone, sometimes the biggest act of love can be letting them go so they can fulfill their whole potential.

The beautiful themes and emotions are enhanced by the vivid recurring imagery: plants in different states of growth, the window view from Gene’s room, the scenes from Gene W and Trevor’s childhood, especially the scenes where older Gene is set inside his memories, looking at the younger versions of himself.

And the scene where Trevor, who was abandoned and adopted as a baby, is shown to sit in the shadows while the rest of his family is bathing in light, showing the disconnect he’s felt even from the people who truly love him… Definitely one of the most powerful parts of the story for me.

Even now, thinking about the characters is making me emotional all over again....

There's Trevor, who has estranged himself from his family even though they love and support him, who desperately tries to show his own love by giving and buying people things and is afraid of pursuing his own happiness.

There's Gene Walker, whose hunger for knowledge and life drove him away from his family and community, who still hasn’t forgiven himself for that and who is still looking for something to believe in and belong to, yet doesn’t want those things chain him in one place.

Then there's Gene Edwards, the cheeky teen who cannot stop reading his strange uncle’s very personal diary, because he’s been trying to figure out his own sexuality and finds something that feels familiar on those pages. I really would have wanted to see more of his story! Maybe there's still room for one more spin-off in the series?

And finally there's Karen, romance novelist and Trevor’s ex-fiancee who becomes a great friend to both Genes and who definitely deserves her spot in the ’amazing women in BL stories’ hall of fame. Cannot stress how much I love her.

Even though I really wish the story would have been a little longer and the ending didn’t make me ugly cry the way Rumspringa did, Dear Gene is still a very beautiful and thematically rich story.

This whole manga series handles topics like family, belonging, growing up and becoming your own person in a very poignant way. Romance and sex are very important to the story (Azuma Kaya draws ero scenes so beautifully I'll never get over it), but they are not the only thing that is important in the storyline or the characters' lives. Azuma Kaya is definitely one of those creators who are showing just how versatile BL manga can be, and how many types of stories can be told through BL!

Dear Gene has not been officially licensed in eng yet. The jp version is available on all major Japanese bookstore and ebook sites, I personally read it on ebookjapan. The eng version of The Scene of My Rumspringa can be read on Bookwalker, Inkr and Comikey.

PS I totally recommend buying the special edition for Dear Gene vol 2 because it comes with a lovely 20 page bonus comic where Gene E comes to visit his uncle for Christmas and we get to meet all the characters one more time!

Did you ever manage to make time to watch A Starstruck Odyssey? The Intrepid Heroes were in peak form that season and I'd love to know your thoughts on it.

This message reminded me to check it out so I started last night and I've been really loving it!

I'm only 3 episodes in so you'll have to check in with me a little later if you want more in depth thoughts but it's so funny so far!

Highlights so far for me are Boss Bitch Ally with the braincells, Murph going full meathead action hero himbo, and Siobhan doing alien rumspringa and IMMEDIETLY getting caught in an MLM.

(Also LOVE Murph and Emily seated next to each other. Gunner Channel!)

WILD choice for Zac to be like, "I wanna be a yeerk," and everyone else is like yeah we like this guy WAY more than the other guy so no questions.

And I cry laughed in ep 2 during the scene where they tried to get a job ("My farts smell AWESOME!").

My school/work life has been VERY hectic recently (which is why I haven't been keeping up w/ recaps) but I will def be watching Starstruck during my breaks as a pick me up. Thanks for the nudge to finally pull the trigger!

I'm reading BTTTBM ch. 22 and oof this line really gets me...  "And it's hard to come back from killing someone, because you know that it changes the way everyone else sees you too." Could you share some of your thoughts on how each Cullen reacted to Rosalie killing Royce and Co. in 1933?

I think that line from Rosalie is very true, but I also think it's a reflection of a great deal of projection on her part - killing people profoundly changed the way she saw herself.

In my headcanon, Carlisle was both horrified and deeply frightened by what Rosalie did. Horrified by the brutality of it, the elements of both mental and physical cruelty, but also frightened by these and what it might mean for the future. What had he created? Carlisle had known a lot of vampires and must have known that psychological stability is NOT something they're known for - what exactly was this bitter, furious girl who was clearly half deranged by her own rage and desire for revenge going to do once it was over? Was she really going to able to exact her bloody revenge and then go back to reading books and curling her hair and talking to Esme about fashion? And if she didn't, if this wasn't simply about revenge against these specific people and was an actual psychological break...what was Carlisle going to do about it? I don't think he held any negative judgements against Rosalie so much as he was afraid for her - an immortal life filled with hate and revenge and unsatisfied rage isn't a good thought.

I think Esme shared his fears, but not as deeply. Partly because she's not as familiar with all these psychologically damaged vampires that Carlisle was, but also because I think she recognised that a big part of Rosalie taking revenge was about her seeking to regain her own power. Her assault left her powerless, and her vampire transformation didn't help that - Rosalie really needed something to give her a sense of agency and control in her own life at that point. Esme had been that abused woman and she recognised those emotions.

I think both Esme and Carlisle saw Rosalie a little more clearly after this though. I think it made them see that she was not only the pretty, shallow, tantrum throwing socialite that they had been dealing with. It demonstrates a depth of emotion, of strength and tenacity and courage and firmness of mind that could, if developed in the right way, make her into a formidable woman who would be a worthy and welcome member of the family. (Of course, all these can also be negative traits...so you see my endless fascination with Rosalie's dichotomies!)

Rosalie's revenge could have been the key to her and Edward finding some common ground and mutual respect - such a wasted opportunity! Edward could read her mind, and he knew with more confidence than Carlisle had that this wasn't a sign of a permanently damaged vampire who'd wreak havoc on the world for the rest of her immortality. Also, she was only doing what he had already done. Edward wasn't driven by revenge, but he went on his murder rumspringa targeting the exact same type of people that Rosalie was systematically killing night after night. If he'd only TALKED to her, the two of them might really have reached some level of mutual understanding. Rosalie could have known that what she read as judgement from Edward was actually concern and a genuine respect. She would have stopped seeing Edward as the 'perfect' older sibling she could never live up to, and they might have become friends. I've always thought that part of the reason Edward and Rosalie spark off each other is that they're too alike, and they both hate seeing their worst qualities reflected in each other.

(And that's something about the Be The Thing scenario - without Emmett turning up on the scene so quickly, Rosalie and Edward DID have those conversations over the years. Instead of saving all her honest emotion and vulnerabilities for Emmett alone, Rosalie had seventy years where she had to learn to show them to the other family members and accept their kindness. She and Edward only had each other as the 'kids' in the family, and without Emmett there to run interference they simply had to extend each other grace and learn to get along and they're better people and better friends because of it.)

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this on my blog, but I was a bit blown away by the fact that there is a manga about the Amish Rumspringa.  It also a BL award darling and looks pretty dang good.

Wheel of Time Episode 4: The Dragon Reborn

In which there are some fakeouts, some dancing, and a doll. (A reminder, this is spoilery for book stuff.)

We get our first glimpse of a man channeling with Logain in the prologue. The weaves have some of the "light" glowy swirly stuff we see with Moiraine...but also streaks of tainted darkness mixed in. Nice. And his "advisors" are also voices no one else can hear, like his "friend" from earlier. They hint at some melodramatic backstory with his parents and sister that doesn't really feel necessary. Now it's Rand's turn to be the paranoid one (with regard to "why are we letting Thom follow us"). "One Warder is never enough" - Alanna in her first scene with dialogue. #foreshadowing Some of the other False Dragons who have proclaimed themselves in the past have included women. Makes sense with the changes for the TV show, but also, some of the Dragons mentioned in the books couldn't even channel, they were just seeking political power/wrongly believed themselves to be the chosen one. So having women in that capacity makes sense. Moiraine talking about wanting Alanna's strength on her side at the last battle :( The Grinwell farm! Else gets namedropped a couple times down the road when people need a false name to travel under. Lan tries to casually sneak up and have lunch with Nynaeve and Liandrin just leaves them alone together. The Tuatha'an start describing the Way of the Leaf. That's not really interesting, what's more interesting is that they didn't do it last episode--last episode I guess was just to be like "where will the wolves lead Perrin? Ooh, nomads with colorful clothing taste, yay!" "Run if we can, endure if we cannot." I may be stretching it a bit here, but I feel like this could be relevant for Egwene (and Rand, although he's not here) in their arcs about embracing pain? Like, sometimes you just have to endure, and you make your peace with that because that's the way of live you've chosen. And Ila uses this conversation to cold-read Perrin, nice. Mat starts throwing up, we see the curse affecting him. Paralleling Logain's taint for a fakeout? Else has a Birgitte doll!!!!!! Okay and then Thom makes the Owyn-Mat parallel explicit. The Warders are all shipping Lan/Nynaeve. "How did you meet?" Lan quickly interrupts so Nynaeve doesn't reveal too much. Then she says "I tracked him" and everybody laughs because who could track the amazing woodsman, al'Lan Mandragoran?! The best lie is a simple truth. The Tinker dancing music is nice, more my style than the operatic vocal stuff. "Are you sure this isn't the Song you're looking for?" -Egwene Nice Ila and Perrin scene, discussing how realistic the pacifist lifestyle is. "What greater revenge against violence than peace?" I didn't really remember anything about Aram's parent/Raen and Ila's unnamed child from the books, but looking this up, apparently in the books Aram's mother gets killed by Trollocs at the start of book two and that makes him wonder "if I had a sword, could I have saved her?" So a different take on that dynamic. "I wanted revenge." -Ila "That doesn't sound very much like the Way of the Leaf!" - Perrin. She's using it metaphorically, but this reminded me a tiny bit of the book 13 scene: "I assume you hope that you saving my life in battle will make me reduce your punishment?" -Galad "It had better!" -Perrin *well, that was less heroic and more honest than I expected from this legendary dude* -Galad, mentally. Tinker youth have an Amish-like Rumspringa period. (Ironic to me because I'm writing this as I visit my aunt and uncle, who are definitely not Amish themselves but live in a region with a high Amish/Mennonite population density.) Liandrin: "What if we 'accidentally' let Logain escape so we could recapture him and then we'd have no choice but to gentle him?" I feel like this is the first of many "accidental" schemes in the series. Nynaeve's backstory gets us another Manetheren callback! But that again raises the question of where exactly she's from--presumably the Two Rivers area because her family knows that quote? Or is she from farther away, just somewhere like Malkier where people happen to know the Old Tongue? I understand that Nynaeve is just hanging out with Alanna and the Warders, but I feel like even though she is a tracking champ, once the battle with Logain's army breaks out they would not let her join the fray. Obviously in the long run Nynaeve is one of the best people to have on your side when battle begins, but rightly or wrongly, I think the Warders would be a bit protective and be like "leave us alone, just take cover." (Maybe if they knew she'd killed a Trolloc...) Moiraine sneaks in on Logain as he's escaping--why? To learn more about saidin from someone with firsthand experience? Again, I think his approach would be just to knock her out and run away. "Why are we reborn? So we can do better next time, right?" Nice dark take on the Tam philosophy from episode 1/book 12. "The Wheel doesn't want anything, it can't. Any more than the river or the rain." Excuse me, missy, I thought the Wheel weaved as the Wheel willed?! Are we just never gonna get that line? "Liandrin, you can't draw that much power, you'll burn out!" -Moiraine. I think this is our first mention of the potential to burn out (as distinguished from stilling/gentling). Also...why couldn't Liandrin just have burned out there, would make a lot of things easier. Nynaeve is so angry she not only heals Lan but also Liandrin and presumably everyone else alive in the room. (Again, why couldn't you have just...not healed Liandrin and saved us some time.) Again, this is obviously a fakeout with the "your power is a candle next to the sun" line from before. Aaaand Logain just quotes that, yep. This is probably the only TV show where I'll be able to say something smart and insightful moments before they make it explicit, and that's because I've read the books so many times :D :D
