Fun Fact
BuzzFeed published a report claiming that Tumblr was utilized as a distribution channel for Russian agents to influence American voting habits during the 2016 presidential election in Feb 2018.
Anyways, The Spiderwick Chronicles was 100% responsible for me being as into fantasy as I am today, and trying to mimic the art of Tony DiTerlizzi was 1000% responsible for my art style, so this is a Tony DiTerlizzi appreciation post.
This is horrible, tho. Imagine all the people who put such hard work into this show…only for it to a frigging tax write off.
And, yes, I know they all still got paid, but it must be so disheartening. Especially for all the child actors who had to take time off from school/leave home for a tv show they assumed would help their long term career.
Same thing happened to the lead girl from the Batgirl film. Her career was on the rise and she turned down a lot of other promising projects to do the film. And look how that worked out.
I love those magical world type stories that are less "oh I got transported into this magical world" and more "the magical world was right under our noses this entire time. It was in our own backyard."
Looking back, something I really liked about The Spiderwick Chronicles was this idea of, like. Magical biological communities. The books were set in New England and Florida, and each region had its own unique magical wildlife; New England was all dwarves and elves and goblins and sprites, and Florida was crawling with dragons and giants and nixies and merfolk.
It was a little thing, but I thought of it a lot because it opened the question of what magical creatures lived in other regions, which is absolutely something I spent too much time thinking about as a kid.
Canada’s full of trolls. I know this to the bottom of my soul. Canada is full to the tits with trolls. You might think there’s lots of trolls in New England, but that’s just peanuts compared to Canada. It’s like the hall of the mountain king up here.
