can’t stop thinking about the form of sacrifice specifically practiced in robin redbreast. the cyclical nature of it is utterly horrifying
#essentially— and don’t read ahead if you’re going to watch it / don’t want spoilers (although it did come out in 1970 so i suppose spoiler#may be a strong term)—#essentially. the ‘bull is brought to the cow’ as norah phrases it in horror every twenty years: a woman is lured to the village somehow and#the chosen ‘young king’ seduces and impregnates her. everything is put in place to ensure she cannot leave or prevent getting pregnant— her#phone is cut off. the bus driver always drives past her. her contraceptives are hidden. she is ultimately left with no choice but to bear#the child to term. the father is killed so his blood fertilises the land. the child— when born— will be given to the orphanage. and in#twenty years? well. the village has another ‘young king’ and more luring to do#it’s terrifying. an utterly self-consuming maw— nothing wasted it’s waste-not-want-not oedipal paganism. it’s exquisite in its horror#the womb churns and churns and churns. and men die. and the women are cast out again and— pointedly— allowed to leave the village. because#the villagers know they will give birth anyhow. and the child will come back to them an orphan. and ms vigo will tell them again that ‘here#am your place’. incredible. terrifying.#no idea what they do if the child is a girl of course. my i suppose they just lure a man instead#god. god. lord summerisle would go hazy-eyed over it
