Hey about that SVTFOE Rewrite...

I know it's been a fairly long time since I finally threw in the towel on that old thing, but me and @full-moon-phoenix were discussing that whole thing where making Eclipsa and Toffee a thing would have solved a whole lot of problems with the story.

...and that actually gave us enough inspiration to start thinking about trying again with the rewrite.

It has everything.

A chance to give the two most lore important yet underwritten characters in the show an excuse to stay in the foreground that gives them both more to work with!

More opportunities for a stronger conflict that ties together the plot lines about Mewni, the monsters, the queens, and the magic!

Ship drama that actually matters to the narrative!

As you may remember, I’ve been teasing a second fic for some time. However, I hit a lot of snags on the road--some of it had to do with the pandemic, some of it had to do with looking back on SPOP and realizing it wasn’t as good as I remember. Either way, I ended up getting distracted with personal business or other fandoms that I felt more comfortable in.

GODZILLA: CHAOS THEORY

(an independent Godzilla AU writing project by The Dapper Critter and Iamthekaijuking)

“Any sufficiently evolved biology is indistinguishable from divinity” – Ryoichi Mafune (1968 - 2011), Macrozoologist, Theoretical Naturalist, Occultist

 It is the 2nd decade of the 21st century. The kaiju crisis is getting out of human control.

 Tomoko Yamane, a morose behaviourist with confidential psychic powers and a troubled upbringing. Akira Nakajima, her partner, a macrobiologist with a shaky sense of optimism working for a better future. Yumiko Satsuma, their military liaison, a headstrong woman who rose from the ashes of tragedy to become the most adept combat pilot alive.

 These three are tasked by KAMI—a specialized environmental agency—to track, study, and if necessary, neutralize the monstrous lifeforms that have appeared across the world at an increasingly alarming rate, affecting our planet’s environment and our society in unbelievable ways. Their first target is the infamous apex predator whose species marked the beginning of the kaiju crisis in 1954. The one who changed their lives forever in one, fateful day over 20 years ago: Godzilla.

 Utilizing an unusual mix of science, technology, the supernatural, and some unusual outside help, the trio strives to unlock the many mysteries of the monsters they encounter. Though they have some differences to work through, the farther they come in their endeavours and the greater the hardships become, the closer they become as people. But the more startling their discoveries become, the more they realize the ruthless Godzilla may not be what he seems…

 …nor the true threat to their world.

A Long Overdue Critter Update

(*nervously pokes my head around the corner like a scared rat*)

Uh... Hey guys.

So, it’s been a while since I gave you any updates on my writing or my life. Guess I’d better give you an update before you think I died or gave up or turned into an altruistic reblog bot. (Is that a thing yet? Whatever.)

I’ve been going through a really tough time for the past few months. Realized that someone close to me was in fact being toxic and abusive, and in doing so, realized that’s were most of my mental health problems came from. Had those mental health problems--specifically my old friends depression and anxiety--spike in response to learning this. And trying to take care of this loved one as they went through health issues with the knowledge that they’re largely the reason I ended up with as many problems I did, AND that I’m not going to get away from them anytime soon. Also the world’s still burning and the little things are getting more and more exclusive, and I recently found out I’m horribly allergic to some of them now. So that’s not very fun either if we’re being honest here.

But I’ve been adapting to life’s challenges as best I can, still got my friends and fandoms to give me a boost, and for all the difficulties I’ve been having I’ve managed to get something good out of it. With the loving support of some of my closest friends (including my awesome mom!), I’m learning healthy coping strategies to mitigate the emotional damage done by This Person, how to get through my everyday life without feeling closer to the brink and prioritizing taking care of myself over making others. Not only that but that lesson has extended to my writing as well.

For a long, long time, I was a people-pleaser. Between the influence of that certain loved one’s toxic behaviour and the equally toxic behaviour of the average fanbase(’s outspoken minorities) on the internet, I felt like my success and my worth was tied to my ability to keep the people I cared about happy.

At all costs.

No matter how unrealistic their expectations got.

So if you’re wondering why my writing went nowhere it’s because of two big reasons (that don’t have anything to do with my equally helpful ADHD): 1) I stopped writing for myself and started writing to try and impress as many people as I could for no reason other than ensuring my long-term success. (If that sounds dumb, IT SURE IS!) 2) I got preoccupied trying to keep this loved one happy on a daily basis, running around doing chores and fetching things to keep them happy. (He can be kept happy for a time, thankfully. But I usually end up too tired from everything to write.)

Now though? Things are going to be different. I’m not going to make big promises I can’t keep or try to get you guys hyped up. You’re not just a fanbase I can tease with reveal, and I am not some hot new content creator making a splash (yet). You’re my friends and I am just a silly little guy learning his passion and having fun.

I’m going to start taking better care of myself and when I write, I’m going back to writing for myself. I might not be able to get away from all problems just yet, but I can learn to live with them, and I above all: I can still have fun.

I was going to post updates on my fanfic projects next, but that would make this post even longer. You can look forward to it soon though! For now, I just wanted to get some stuff off my chest and let you all know how I was doing.

Critter Update: THIS AGAIN

Yup, I’m still conscious. Still capable of thought beyond reblogs and memes. You’re probably wondering just what I’ve been up to.

Where’s my next fic? That art blog? When am I gonna draw again at all? Am I ok, actually? Am I doing anything actually interesting? Among others, I’m sure.

Well, I think it’s time to offer some answers to where I’ve been and what I’ve done. However little of it there may be.

-I’ve been trying to work through some of my biggest problems. Namely depression, anger management, health, and disorganization.

-For starters, thanks to some family intervention, I’ve started looking at jobs again. I applied for my first a couple weeks ago but so far it hasn’t gone anywhere. (Nor am I sure it would in the first place.)

-Still got to make time for that art blog. But hopefully I can finally get it started before too long.

-Speaking of art, I have some plans to start making fanart again, and to post some concepts for my long-awaited next Entrapdak fic soon as well.

-I realize that I have been keeping a lot of my friends waiting after I promised to review their fics. (You know who you are. Poor guys.) I haven’t been making the time for it I should have but I have some reorganizing with my schedule and hopefully I should have more time for reviewing your work and giving it the feedback it deserves in the very near future.

-Star vs. The Monstrosities of Magic is making slow but absolutely steady progress. Me and @full-moon-phoenix are making good headway with plotting the overall story, and we’ve even started plotting out some of the episodes from start to finish. We’re always looking for new members to offer a fresh perspective and their talent to our ambitious rewrite.

-The outline for Tales from Beast Island is well on it’s way as well. It’s taken some time, I admit, but I am working to deliver the best continuation of Hordak and Entrapta’s story I can, while also doing justice for their friends and frenemies. Oh, and Beast Island, too of course. On a sidenote, I might just be making and posting some concept art in the near future. (*charming wink*)

-Taking even more of my sweet time with Gamera: Guardian of Hope while I develop the characters, monsters, and stories. I can’t say much about it right now, but I want to make sure I can create the most exciting and endearing story I can with the Friend to Children and Guardian of the Universe at it’s core.

-My Super Electronic Robot Hero Friend, Jet Jaguar will now be the next kaiju fic in line and it might just be getting an outline before long too.

-Godzilla: The Monster Age is undergoing a few overhauls to the story as it sits on the backburner to make it stronger both tonally and logistically speaking.

-Speaking of fanfiction, in the meantime, I’m seriously considering writing a one-shot or a ficlet to keep my writing senses sharp while I’m in between bigger projects like Monstrosities of Magic and Tales from Beast Island. I won’t say anything is set in stone just yet, but I do have some candidates in mind:

-On an almost entirely unrelated note, I started developing my first original story but ended up picking something different to be it. What am I talking about? Eh, you’ll find out. Someday... Eventually... When the time is right... Eventually...

Hiatus Time.

Well, guys, it had to happen sooner or later. A bunch of stuff has come up IRL recently, and it’s pretty important--post-secondary planning, career searching, and driving lessons to be specific.

Despite my best efforts, I am having trouble trying to make time for all that in addition my time on here. Also, as much I hate to admit it, I have let myself get distracted from my real-world responsibilities on here more than once. So in order to curb this, I’m going to take some time to take care of my real-world responsibilities and realign myself.

However, this is not goodbye.

I plan to return in about 3 weeks or so to see how you all are doing and to post the next part of my Starco Star vs. fanfic. You also see a post that I qued for this weekend but that’s different. I will back.

Until I return, I just want to thank all the friends and followers I have found on here for all your support. You guys have given me some much-needed confidence going forward, and I look forward to providing good content and interacting with you again when I’ve had a chance to rest and refresh myself.
