#GROUNDTRUTHINGS “Out with the boho artists, in with the cash-flow-positive ones”. Fine artists (not boho or hobo artists) in a recent and naive article about gentrification are described as “traditional” and commercial tech firms as “cash-flow-positive” LA types. They say the traditionalists can be incorporated into the master plan through murals and commissions to come. They are also describing the units in these new developments as Los Angeles style studios. Sounds confusing! Especially if one has lived and worked in LA and SF, where there is an actual tech and entertainment industry. Strangely enough, there’s a market in these comparable cities for contemporary art. There isn’t anything confusing about what’s happening in the East Village, Barrio Logan, and all over San Diego. Developers, both corporate and independent, are blatantly manipulating the idea of an arts community to lure “LA style” and “Silicon Valley types” to rent “artist style” over priced boxes, in an area lacking any significant tech industry. The fact they’re selling digital media as new media really says it all. The idea is cash-flow-negative for startups, offering no real incentives other than a plethora of bar and grills. Developers do not create industry! Their “idea” is based simply on UCSD’s plans to build satellite campuses in the area. In the end, to take advantage of students as well. These developers are willingly and knowingly applying the models of gentrification used in LA and SF. To engage in this kind business practice is not only irresponsible and unethical, it’s really short sighted!
