“You’re being way too loud, mate, you’re going to wake her up.”

There’s too much rummaging through cabinets as Daniel asks Lando if he can get his sifter out from the cabinets. It sure as hell would be a lot easier to find if Lando actually knew what a sifter was, but as a boy who’s gotten most of his meals delivered to him and has become a creature of habit for the select few that he does make on his own, it’s safe to say that he is an absolute menace in the kitchen.

After your boyfriend Lando had last minute decided to go to Australia to visit Daniel, you received enough facetimes and text messages from him begging for you to come visit that you had finally caved to spontaneity and flew into Perth the night before.

Lando was nothing but a gentleman, and he wanted to do something special to show his appreciation for you going out of your way to spend time with him. Every sacrifice that you make definitely does not go unnoticed, and in the little time that he has during the offseason Lando likes to make sure that you know how much he loves everything that you do for him.

And somehow that led to his master plan of wanting to cook breakfast for you. He knew that he was no masterchef, but Lando had hoped that having his former teammate help him out in the kitchen would be enough. It started as a plan to make a full English breakfast. Then Lando realized that Daniel’s fridge looked like he hadn’t gone grocery shopping since the two of them were teammates, so the plan got switched to just eggs and homemade biscuits. And after two failed attempts at making dough for biscuits that had only led to a colossal mess on the kitchen countertops they finally settled for making just eggs.

“There’s a really great breakfast cafe down the road, Lando. I’m sure Y/N would like that just as much as..” Daniel’s voice trails off as he looks at what he used to be able to recognize as his own kitchen “whatever this is that you’re doing.”

Meanwhile, Lando is at eye level with his bowl of freshly cracked eggs as he is carrying out what he can only describe as a “rescue mission” to fish out the pieces of eggshell that have fallen into the bowl.

“Shut up Daniel, it’s a labor of love, you wouldn’t get it.” He continues to pick out a concerning number of pieces of shell.

“More like a labor of salmonella” Daniel snickers as he leans against the counter.

The Aussie is quick to jump out of the way when Lando throws a piece of shell at him and misses, only adding to the mess in the kitchen. Luckily, he’s saved by the bell when you finally stumble out of the bedroom, sleep still clouding your eyes.

“Good morning sunshine!” Lando yells from the stove as he’s finally gotten into action cooking said eggs.

With the promise that in 2 minutes there would be fresh eggs for breakfast, Lando guides you to sit at the table. You hadn’t realized until this moment that you’d never seen Lando cook at all, let alone cook for you. He was a great sous chef when he asked you to be, but you weren’t sure of his abilities when left to his own devices.

“Breakfast is served!” Lando says as he lays the plate in front of you. You raise your eyebrows in surprise, biting your tongue to keep your initial reaction from slipping out.

“They’re poached!” your boyfriend exclaims with a smile.

Lando looks so proud and there’s no way you can break his heart over what is certainly a non-edible, definitely not poached egg that he has placed in front of you.

“Thank you, baby” you smile as you pinch his cheek.

You can see Daniel posed behind Lando wildly shaking his hands and mouthing “DO NOT EAT” as he watches you toy with the runny eggs in front of you. You would do anything for Lando, including eating an icky egg, so you pick up your fork and dig in.

It’s definitely still raw, which you expected from its appearance, but there’s subtle hints of vinegar and sugar and something spicy that feels especially vile on your tongue. Your best attempt at a poker face cracks near the end as you try to swallow, but you’re quick to try and cover it up.

“Wow, you did something really special with these Lan” you say, choosing your words very carefully as you try to wash out your mouth with a non-suspicious amount of water.

Lando offers to try them and you figure there’s no point in stopping them as he piles some egg onto a spoon. You swear it barely even touches his mouth before he spits it back out right onto the plate.

“Oh my god - you swallowed that??” The British boy doesn’t even dare to put his tongue back into his mouth as he tries to brush the taste off his taste buds. You can’t help the giggle that bubbles up inside you as you and Daniel start to keel over in laughter.

“Mate - you let me serve this to my girlfriend?? I could have killed her or something with this!” Lando turns to Daniel in his rage.

The Aussie is laughing and is trying to rationalize that the egg is probably not deadly as he continues to gasp for air. It’s Lando who makes the next move to grab the plate and dump it in its entirety in the garbage.

“That’s a porcelain plate, Lando!” you exclaim from where you’re sitting.

“”Please, it’s probably a biohazard at this point. I think I owe Daniel an entirely new kitchen at this point anyways, so he can just add this to my tab.” Lando jokes as he pulls you towards the bathroom, gesturing towards the mess on the counters as you both walk away.

“Lando, she’s so in love with you because you couldn’t pay me to eat that shit.” Daniel says as he watches the both of you share the bathroom trying to brush the vile taste off your tongues with your toothbrushes.

Lando keeps the toothbrush in his mouth as he goes to wrap his arms around your waist, something that has you shrugging away since you’re pretty sure he’s drooling on your shoulder, and you tell him exactly that. From the side Daniel can’t stop laughing as he stares at you two.

The British boy stays attached to you as he leans over to spit out his toothpaste, mumbling something you can’t quite understand.

“ I sdflksnjo sdlkgsnd”

You almost choke on your spit listening to Lando’s babbling as you hunch over to do the same in the sink.

“I was trying to say that I’m so lucky to have you baby. I love you.”

You can't help but smile against Lando’s lips as you pull him in for a kiss. There’s still a vague taste of vinegar and egg that you know will linger for a little too long, but more than anything, he tastes like love.

You were healing.

With the help of Kerstin of course.

You didn’t realize until the recent international camp where Australia would vs Uzbekistan when Courtney walked in and instead of a feeling of heartbreak washing over you, you finally saw her as a normal teammate, a friend almost.

“Media duties!” Macca called out with a grin as she held her phone and the tiny microphone which had some of the girls groaning.

“Partner up!” Allanna yelled from behind her she yelled and you were at the food table putting spaghetti in your bowl, meaning that when you went back to your table everyone was partnered up except for Courtney whom you both made awkward eye contact with another and Kyra coughed to save you both from it.

“I could switch” she offered to you but you shrugged your shoulders “It should be fine” you smiled and made your way over to her “Hey,” she said softly “Hi” you smiled, excited that you were finally feeling like her teammate again and not her ex.

“Excited for the games coming up, going to your homeland soon” she pointed out and you smiled “I haven’t seen my family since the break so I’m pretty excited, I’m giving my mum about 10 seconds before she starts to cry” you laughed and she joined you.

After a few seconds Courtney turned towards you “This is nice” was all she said and you nodded “Yeah” you breathed out and the two tall girls from your team walked over to you both with whiteboards “You have been chosen” Macca said in a weird voice you could only hear in star wars and you tilted your head “sorry I don’t speak Chewbacca”.

“C'mon” Allanna sighed and grabbed your hand, walking a bit faster so you were out of earshot of the other two “Are you okay?” she asked and you nodded “I’m okay” You smiled “Yeah?” Allana asked with a smile “Yeah” you confirmed and hugged into her side where she left a chaff kiss on your head.

“You know I didn’t like the idea of Kerstin taking you after what happened at the World Cup but you and her are really good together, even on the field,” she said to you and you blushed “C'mon let's just do this interview”.

You and Courtney both sat down together in the media room as a camera guy cleaned the camera Mackenzie held a script behind it and Allana held the mic. “Why did we need to clean the camera?” Courtney asked “Raso and Ellie did a try not to laugh challenge” the guy piped up and you laughed at the idea “oh that is chaos”.

“So you’re just gonna do like a ‘who’s most likely to’ kind of thing yeah?” Kenzie asked and you nodded and the camera started rolling.

“All right, who’s most likely to forget a teammate's birthday?” she asked and you wrote down Kyra’s name and turned it around at the same time as Courtney as the room erupted in laughter “Y/n” Courtney nudged your shoulder “what” you turned to her as your faces were close.

“It’s only out of us two”

Mackenzie and Allanna’s laughter filled the room again as your eyes bulged “Sorry Kyra!”.

“Who did you write anyway?” you asked as you rubbed Kyra’s name out “Me, you were always good with dates” She shrugged, and you nodded with a smile.

“Most likely to end up on Broadway?”

You both turned around your whiteboards to reveal your name “Me” you smiled “Fun fact: before I went into footy full time, I was always in my school musicals and local ones”

“And was even good at them” Courtney chimed as she remembered going to them.

“Most likely to go on Love Island?”

You thought about it for a second and then wrote down Courtney’s name, not sure if she would take it offensively but when you turned it around she laughed and you saw your name on hers “What?” you asked “Pretty people do well on Love island” Courtney pointed out with laughter and the comment went straight over your head “no you would do well in all like the challenges they do, you and your partner would dominate” you pointed out as everyone in the room was now laughing.

You both waved to the camera still laughing at each other as the cameraman turned it off.

“Well, at least I didn’t get water all over me this time”.

That night after dinner you laid on your bed with the phone in hand where Kerstin was “So how was tonight?" she asked after having a conversation all about her first couple of days "Good we did some media shots and I was with Courtney" you explained

You were too busy explaining your story that you didn’t see Kerstin's eyes when you mentioned your ex-girlfriend. “I miss you,” she told you with a smirk “Babe it’s been a week” you laughed but her stare didn’t change “I miss you too” you admitted with a smile.

“You getting a tan up in Spain?” you teased, and the girl smiled “Actually I was thinking we could come up here next break” she admitted and your smile widened “I’d love that”.

When you both hung up the phone for the night you saw that the admin had posted the video of you and Courtney, but you paid no mind to it, knowing what had happened in real life.

Kerstin sat in her bed and watched it, her eyes traveling to Courtney when her arm grabbed you and swivelled you around and told you that you were playing the game wrong. Then it went to her staring at you for a reaction whenever she turned her whiteboard around.

“Pretty people do well on Love Island”

Kerstin's eyebrows shot up at the blonde girl's (her words to her girl) words, she tried not to but her finer swiped up to see all the comments that had already flooded the video.

‘did they get back together?”

Kerstin shut off her phone and put it on her bedside table with a groan.

She trusts you with every bone in her body and she knows you would never ever cheat, especially with Courtney but right now all she wanted was to push the blonde Australian away so people would know you were hers.

And hers only.

Tony took you off after 60 minutes, scoring two goals and assisting Mary for hers, you had the win in for sure and you helped your team make your way into the Olympics, jumping in joy from the sidelines when Caitlin scored her hattrick.

The game finished 7-1 and the Matilda’s team were singing random songs in the change rooms to celebrate. “Congrats” Courtney said as you walked in “thanks for the assistance” you smiled as you thought back to the first goal of the match.

You were on the wing, free as your defender got slightly confused and ran onto Raso. Courtney caught your eye as she dribbled and kicked with her right foot from their square to you where you hit it from your chest back down to your foot, giving you a clear way for a boot, which you did and thankfully the ball went in.

You jumped around in excitement as the team jumped on you, Courtney as well who lent her hand out to pick you up.

You walked away back to your cubby as Courtney watched you.

Allanna picked you up as you walked over “Can’t believe Tony took you off right before you got a hattrick” she groaned “It’s fine, he told me he wanted me fit and healthy for the Melbourne game cause he’s keeping me on for the full 90” you smirked and she gasped and smiled “Chicken!” Caitlin cheered over and sat down next to you “Got good news for you”

“What may that be?”

“Viv and I figured out that we and the Netherlands are gonna be at the same airport at the same time!” she told you quickly and you jumped up “fuck yes!” you cheered, ecstatic that you get to see your girlfriend.

“Alrighty girls!” Tony walked in “pack your bags cause we’re leaving bright and early in the morning!”

You weren’t usually a morning person but the idea of you seeing Kerstin again had you waking everyone else up to be quick, you even bought mini a coffee as Harper may have kept her up.

“Thanks, darl” she complimented you with a thankful smile as you walked together, Harper deciding to jump into your arms as you all walked onto the bus.

“Want y/n” she turned to her mum who shrugged “Take her,” she told you with a smile as you and the little one both cheered.

“You are happy,” Harper told you as you both sat down and you smiled “I get to see Kerstin” You smiled and the girl put her mouth in an ‘o’ shape letting out a little sound “I like Kerstin She gave me lollies” she smiled as she remembered when you took Kerstin to a ‘Tillies’ night out.

“That did not make your mummies happy,” you told her as you remember Kerstin apologizing as she didn’t know that the lollies she gave her had so much sugar in them.

The two of you fell asleep on the bus till you were shaken awake by her mother “I can still hold her” you promised her as you all walked in, quickly going through security with the little one stuck on your shoulder.

She didn’t wake until we all put our bags down “Kerstin” she mumbled and pointed before you turned around and indeed saw your girlfriend in all orange walking towards you, a slight sense of dominance as she locked eyes with you.

“You ruined my surprise little one,” she told Harper before wrapping her arms around you, squeezing you tight before pulling back and looking at you holding a child. “I look like a mum don’t I” you laughed

“milf”

“Kerstin” you scolded and grabbed her arm “C’mon let’s take her to her real mum” you smiled.

Although you loved the little girl, you just wanted to be with your girlfriend for the little time you had.

Dropping off Harper to Mini was easy but it was as you walked by your team members that Kerstin looked around for the blonde who was already watching you pass Mini the child, Kerstin didn’t like that.

“I have to go to the toilet come,” she told you, dragging you off.

You lightly scoffed “You need to learn how to control your bladder”.

You watched as Kerstin held you tight, turning from the regular girl's toilet last second to the disabled, throwing you in and quickly closing the doors behind her.

“Kerstin this is the-“ You were cut off by her lips on hers, moaning into her right away from the impact “Kirsten” you breathed out in between kisses, she simply shooshed you and travelled her lips down your neck, pushing you onto the sink “jump” she told you her hands grabbing your ass as you did and lowered you onto the bench top.

“we’re in public” you breathed out as she sucked onto your neck. She took her head away, looking at you with lust “I just want people to know what’s mine” she told you with a shrug as if it was the easiest thing to say in the world but you felt hot at the words, or maybe because it was the way her hands travelled up your legs as she said so.

“I am yours,” you told her and she crossed her head and tutted “Not everybody knows that,” she said and you thought back….Courtney.

“Are you jealous?” you ask as the woman's fingers played with your waistband “I don’t want anyone thinking they have a chance with you” She smiled and started pulling your shorts down, your underwear along with it, throwing it on the floor before her hands went under your thighs, pulling you towards her “so wet” she smiled, kissing up your legs.

“Did she ever make you this wet?”

You gasped at the words of your girlfriend, a new side that you had never seen of her, and you loved it.

“no” you mumbled as her kiss grew closer to where you needed her.

“Good girl”

Kerstin started slowly with a slow lick through your folds, moaning at the sight of her before she went in again, faster

“Oh fuck” you stuttered, your hand now tangled in her hair that she wore out, biting down on your lip to stop yourself from moaning.

But a buzzing sound interrupted your bliss.

“Answer it,” Kerstin told you before entering a finger into you.

“I-“ “Answer it or I won’t go any further” Kerstin looked into your eyes, silently telling you that she meant it.

“fuck” you cursed before pressing answer and lifting it to your ear as Kerstin eagerly watched you from underneath.

“hey” Courtney said on the phone “hi” you responded and Kersten started moving her finger slowly, you bit onto your free finger to stop yourself from any noise.

“Called cause you’ve been gone for a bit and we have to board in like twenty minutes” she said through the line “Lani said you could be with Kerstin but I just wanted to make sure”

At Kerstins name being dropped you looked down to the girl who was pumping her fingers into you, entering a second finger that made you gasp.

“Are you okay?” Courtneys voice rang out

“yep” you answered quickly, maybe a bit too quickly.

“okay uhm I could find you”

At the words Kerstin sped up and you moaned out into your hand so it was muffled “That’s-“ you started but stopped “That’s okay I’m good, be there in five-ten! minutes” you said but the squeeze of Kerstin's hands on your ass told you that you were going to be a bit longer.

Tumblr, today I am giving you a gift. In honour of Stir-Up Sunday, I offer to you my most sacred possession: my world-famous* Drunken Christmas Fruitcake recipe.

I got this recipe from my partner before he was even my partner. He doesn't recall where he got it from originally, possibly his mother. I have made at least one nearly every year since before we got together. Some years I have made up to 8, starting in October because you need a whole weekend. I have made 6 inch square, 9 inch square, and mini 6 inch loaf pan sizes. This year, I am just making one 6-inch square cake, for us. And so now I share my recipe with you.

This is the original recipe. As you can see, my copy is well-loved. I've made some changes over the years, so below is my updated version of this original.

Quantities listed are suitable for 6-inch square tin (bake 4 hours). Use 0.5x for 6-inch loaf (bake 3.5 hours). 1.5x for 8-inch square (bake 5 hours). Double for 9-inch round (bake 5.5 hours). Triple for 10-inch square (bake 6.25 hours).

You will need 3 bowls including one large one, a wooden spoon, a kitchen scale, and a cake tin (preferably square and in one of the above sizes). A spatula, sifter, and mixer are useful but not required.

Allow a whole weekend for this very important task.

Ingredients

(Yes, they're Imperial. Yes, I'm in Australia. No, I haven't converted them. I just use the Imperial setting on my kitchen scales.)

6oz butter

6oz dark brown sugar

1 tablespoon black treacle

2 teaspoons Gravox (yes, really)

2 eggs

2 teaspoons brandy

6oz plain flour

1/2 teaspoon mixed spice

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

6oz currants

6oz raisins

12oz sultanas

2oz candied peel

2oz glace cherries (candied cherries)

2oz chopped almonds

Grated rind of 1 lemon

Sherry, rum, or whisky for soaking

Method

The day before, mix all the dried fruit together in a bowl. Break up the fruit if it's stuck together. Pour a few glugs of alcohol of some kind over it and mix it up. I usually use the same alcohol I'm planning on soaking the cake in but it doesn't have to be. I've used various rums (spiced, black, white, whatever), various whiskies, brandy, port... Whatever you have in the cupboard. Cover the bowl with cling wrap and leave it to soak overnight. Give it a mix a couple of times if you remember.

On baking day, start by preheating your oven to 275F/135C/Very Slow. It should be just on bake, not fan bake. Make sure you have a rack in the middle of the oven. Check that you haven't left any baking trays in there.

In a large bowl, cream the butter, sugar, and treacle using a stand mixer, a hand mixer, or just giving it a really good beating. It doesn't need to be very light and fluffy. This is not a light and fluffy cake.

Add the eggs and the brandy to the creamed mixture and mix well.

In a separate bowl, sift the flour, Gravox, mixed spice, and cinnamon together. Or just mix it with a fork, that's fine too. Just make sure it's well-mixed.

Get the bowl with your soaked fruit and give it another mix. Throw the chopped almonds in there and grate the lemon in too. Give this fruit mixture another mix to make sure it's well-combined.

You will need a wooden spoon for this step. Put the spatula down. I know you think you can just mix it with a spatula but you can't. Listen to me and my multiple broken spatulas and use a wooden spoon. Tip about a third of the fruit mixture into the big bowl with the butter mixture and mix well. Add a third of the flour mixture and mix again. Repeat until all your ingredients are in the big bowl and well combined. You shouldn't be able to see any dry flour bits.

Get your tin and spray it with baking spray or grease it with butter. Line it with brown paper or baking paper, leaving a good overhang. Spray the paper then add another layer. Give the last layer another spray. You don't want this to stick.

Tip the mixture into the lined tin. Push it into the corners and flatten it out. It doesn't matter if the tin is nearly full. It's not going to rise much. It should look like this:

Check that your oven has finished heating and is on the right setting and there are no baking trays in there (I told you to remove them, remember?). Put the tin in the middle of the oven. If you've used this base recipe in a 6-inch tin, bake for 4 hours. Otherwise, check the baking times at the top of the recipe. If your oven doesn't bake evenly, give the cake a spin halfway through. It should look nice and brown and feel solid.

Leave it in the tin on a cooling rack for about half an hour until you can handle the tin. Carefully invert the cake onto a plate and pull off the paper. Pour some alcohol over the bottom. Put it back in the tin (I carefully put the paper back over it like a hat and push the tin back down on top and then turn it upright again). Cover it with a tea towel and leave it to cool completely (24 hours).

The next day, pour more alcohol over the top. Wrap the cake in two layers of cling wrap and then two layers of tinfoil. Store it in a tin until Christmas Day.

Substitutions and notes

You can use molasses or golden syrup instead of treacle - the cake will have a darker or lighter flavour and colour depending on what you use.

Gravox is vegetarian friendly and is there for colour and salt.

Use whatever Christmassy spices you wish and have to hand.

The fruit quantities are guidelines only. As long as you have about the right weight in total, use what you want. I usually add extra cherries and also about double the amount of almonds because one small packet of slivered almonds is just over 4oz.

For the grated rind use whatever citrus you have loitering in your kitchen.

You don't need to coat the fruit in the flour mixture first to stop it sinking because there is So. Much. Fruit.

Use whatever alcohol you have to hand. The quantity in the ingredients list is a guideline. Follow your heart. If you want an alcohol-free cake, find a different recipe. This is a Drunken Christmas Fruitcake, after all.

The cake will keep forever. I've made them up to two months ahead but usually aim for the traditional Stir-Up Sunday for my baking day. Leaving it for a few weeks before eating lets the flavour develop. The alcohol stops it going off. One time I opened my storage tin to put my cake in and found a forgotten one from the year before and it was still fine!

Wetmusik - Mix Up Volume 1 - Live @ Storey Hall by Simon Digby & Will E Tell 2000 Techno / Tribal Techno

Big advantage of being producers and record label owners who also happen to be DJs is that you can lace your own sets with all the stuff that you and your roster have been working on and then gauge a crowd's reaction to it all before officially releasing any of it to the public. That whole tedious process of having to send your music to *other* DJs in hopes that they themselves like it enough to play it is completely eliminated, because you're your own DJ in this situation. No middle man, no waiting on the whims of someone else's taste; you have full control from start to finish! 😎

And such was the case with this live recorded set from February of 2000 by Simon Digby & Will E Tell, a pair of techno dudes from Melbourne, Australia who were running a label at the time called Wetmusik, and were plying their appreciative crowd on the campus of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology with a blend of a bunch of ground-pounding heaters of their own that they hadn't released, along with some great stuff from people who weren't on Wetmusik as well.

But be forewarned: this mix really isn't for the faint of heart. It may have some comedown moments that break the tension and serve as a bit of a brief cleanse—only for things to ramp up again—but for the better part of 70+ minutes, this is relentlessly percussive techno that you better have a couple Advil on hand to take once the set's over. Rattlingly primal shit with some touches of dystopian futurism, all soaked in a constant thooming that simultaneously beats against your chest and vibrates the soles of your feet.

And honestly, this type of hyper-intense techno isn't necessarily always my favorite in the world, but if you can handle all this pummeling percussion, you'll find that this is a style that can really end up yielding all kinds of novelly nutty, thick slabs of rhythm, and Simon and Will have a whole lot of it in store here, which ultimately makes this mix worth a listen, even if there's a good chance that you might be seeing stars afterwards 🫨.

So the best rhythmically unique selections here come courtesy of Will E Tell himself, with his tribally thumping "Teu Teu Haka" as well as "Strange Behaviour," which has manic claps, lots of wood block reverb, and a respirating bit of noise that's hard to describe, but manages to hold it all together.

Favorite track on here of all, though, is one that's not a Wetmusik original and, therefore, is also far less likely to make you feel like eggs being beaten and whisked around in a bowl: the y2k-era techno standard and masterpiece that is Andrew McLauchlan's "Love Story." Around a quarter-century ago, this Scotsman, who's not really known for much else other than this total bop, managed to catch lightning in a bottle with it. A dusty and obscure 1970s rendition of a Brazilian song gets set to some modern dancefloor techno, and out of that combination comes pure fuckin' magic—a wholly unbeatable tune with a delightfully catchy Portuguese-language chorus that'll linger in your head long after the song itself is over. If you've heard your fair share of early 2000s techno sets, then you're already likely to be familiar with this track, but if that whole era ended up passing you by, you absolutely must listen to this song. One of the greatest pieces of dance music ever made, as far as I'm concerned.

But, yeah, the vast majority of this set from this enterprising Aussie pair still more or less teeters on the edge of my own techno sanity, because of how hard and heavy it tends to be, but the experience can still be a gratifying one if the way I've described it here doesn't actually feel too dissuading to you. Plenty of well-crafted and rhythmically inventive techno to be heard here, but only if you really think you've got the stomach for it.

Daphne-Jean was the production of a whirlwind love story. Her mother was a part of a traveling tour group from the US, taking a 32 day trip to go see the world. They were stopped in Australia for 2 days, where she met Daphne’s soon-to-be father and they fell in-love. To make a long story, short, her mother never finished out her trip; cutting all ties from her birth state of Florida to just make roots with this new guy in a foreign country. Wanting to move somewhere more family-oriented than the city of Sydney, they chose to start their family in the small coastal town of Port Fairy. It took a year for them to tie the knot, and another year for Daphne-Jean to be brought into the world. It was a job opportunity that uprooted the Blissett household from Port Fairy and rooted them here in Manoa Bay merely two years after DJ was born.

Growing up in the Blissett home consisted of going to the local roller rink or bowling alley on Fridays, and dancing around on Sunday mornings whilst making a hearty homemade breakfast. Though the town was small, Daphne-Jean was never deprived of activities to do. The beach providing good waves for surfing in the summers, and the local theatre never short of local and global talent on their calendar.

Daphne-Jean was first coined as ‘DJ’ by her father, and though her mother was diligent in calling her by her full name (being named after her grandmother), her mom even eventually caved. The usage of the nickname grew as she attended school and made more friends beyond her dance classes. Her mom always bragged about how DJ danced before she genuinely walked, and as she has always been known for running on her toes because of it. Her younger years in dance classes marked her love for music, and a major bonding point for her and her mother. One of DJ’s favorite memories as a kid was doing jazzercise videos with her mother. They also shared a love for the 80′s aesthetic and music. Still being a huge part of her brand to this day; both fashion-wise and music-wise with influence. DJ always admired the bold color choices, and the upbeat music that just made you wanna breakout in dance.

It was DJ’s charm and outgoing personality that made her popular. Sure, her looks played a part, but the genuine compassion that radiated out of her so easily made her liked even by those who would normally hate the popular kids. Though she was a social butterfly who had no issue with making friends, there was always a struggle in the romance department. Maybe it was a form of self-harming in a weird addiction sense, or maybe it was just the fact she was popular and attracted the attention, that she always seemed to be in a toxic relationship. Even if it was not always the other person, DJ always had a way of shifting blame because there could never be anything wrong with her. At the end of the day, she always had a justification for her actions - and her perception of it would be the only one that mattered. That didn’t mean she didn’t deal with her fair share of assholes; one in particular being a constant through her high school career. It was a toxic circle of jealousy and games, but DJ just couldn’t find an ‘out’ - mostly because she liked the highs so much, that she didn’t want an ‘out’.

During her 3rd year of high school, DJ started drinking and partaking in experimentation of drugs. It was triggered by her toxic flame at the time, but also her parents’ divorce. Her wild side came out as a scream for help, not necessarily wanting to lean on her father or mother because of how hard both were taking it. It was also the fact that both were taking it so hard, that it confused DJ as to why they were getting a divorce to begin with. It wasn’t until she graduated high school, that she became aware of her mother’s BPD and the negative aspects to her respective case that caused the split; overspending, infidelity - it was too much for DJ to see her mother that way. It also was marked as a wakeup call for DJ when her father would state she was ‘acting’ like her mother. It caused her to cut ties and flee, a part of her always unsettled by how easy it was for her to leave her small town and travel to the city with nothing more than $10 to her name.

DJ never took school seriously, and thus she had to fall back on her skills to obtain a job that could support her in Sydney: stripping. It was during this time in her life that she genuinely felt the most alone she’s ever felt, and so she turned to alcohol and drugs to cope. One of her good friends who was a co-worker of hers, hooked her up with a ‘nice guy’. He did wind up getting DJ into a rehab facility, and DJ instantly obtained a therapist to stay clean when she got out of rehab. The issue was, he started to change - expecting way more from DJ because he credited himself fully for getting her clean. It was like clockwork, how the toxicity followed her in such a vicious cycle. She relapsed twice before actually leaving him.

DJ’s therapist made the correlation known to her, between her happiness and music. It was supposed to be a silly little ‘project’ for her therapy session to come up with a song to air out her emotions about her most toxic ex who wouldn’t leave her alone. She wasn’t expecting her drunkenly posting it on TikTok to go viral. It was an overnight sensation, and that had everything to do with how brutally honest she was; her songwriting more like she was speaking to her best friend that just so happened to be the world. She kept her stage name as DJ Bliss, and is known as DJ, Bliss, or just DJ Bliss by her fanbase - her old identity now something she quickly forgot.

A major record deal came into the picture after 3 years of DJ being a pop star in her bedroom. Though she felt hesitance with what the label contract entailed (practically going from home-based to now international), she signed on and moved to NYC. She’s only been signed to the label for 8 months, but her debut EP is set to be launched by this upcoming October. ‘Til then, she’s still learning the ropes when it comes to this music industry stuff; only really used to fully managing and running her stuff, herself. And also just leaking stuff she shouldn’t be, currently. Recently, she came back to Manoa Bay to see how her family is doing as well as hearing the gossip about Hayden's case progressing. DJ’s either in a super good mood, or in the worst mood ever. She’s coded in extremities, and maybe that had something to do with a mental illness in her family history, but she’s not properly diagnosed with anything. She seeks out thrills, and is a sort of ‘yes’ woman when it comes to last minute trips or activities such as skydiving. DJ is a huge partier, though she is over 8 months sober (and counting), she still loves to let loose and have fun; never turning down an opportunity to dance and have fun. She’s quick to make friends, and can be very supportive. The downfall, is that in a romantic sense she is easily bored. So, if it’s not something toxic, she will make it toxic herself just to watch it self-destruct in her face. She is prone to jealousy and will try to make others jealous. She’s also petty in the sense of loving the chase more than anything, and to be chased. DJ is quick to fall into lust and infatuation, but hates being romanticized. Even though, she’s prone to romanticizing things (especially strangers), and this is because she feels everything so deeply but also because the way she sees things is just how they are to her. This also makes her really stubborn, and it’s hard to have her see things from a different perspective other than her own. DJ doesn’t really think things through, but it makes for great stories. She loves fashion with lots of color, even her black clothing having some rainbow-esque or neon accents to it. She also loves her hair curled and she’s coined a hot pink as her signature color: loving how it’s confident yet happy as a color. She’s also almost never in pants. Her go-to is a skirt or dress, and if she has to wear pants then they’re either sheer or short-shorts. DJ is prone to being optimistic to an unrealistic degree, but she means well and for the most part it’s a self-coping way for her to get in a better mindset. She’s currently questioning her sexuality; thinking maybe it’s not her but the boys who’re making it hard for her to build serious meaningful connections with, but she’s keeping that on the down-low as she’s experimenting more with her bisexuality to figure it out. At the end of the day, she’s someone who radiates fun and she understands struggle - so she’s a great person to have in your life if you need some sunshine, just be careful when her storm clouds start brewing.

I think the batting first decision was taken based on the weather forecast, that if rain interrupted England's chase, they'll have the DLS par target in front of them and play accordingly. That's what my feed was saying.

To sum up the combination of that pitch plus a lethal spin bowling attack like the one India possesses plus england being shit at negotiating spin just wasn't ideal.

Personally, I don't understand why England are persisting with the current team combination? Some major changes need to be made, Bairstow needing to go being the first of them. Like this entire T20 world cup, England have won against Oman, Namibia, USA and West Indies. The first three of those are associate nations, and West Indies are a team in the rebuilding phase. Every time England came up against a full ICC member team, be it Australia, South Africa or India, they lost.

Also, we need to talk about how the pitch and the conditions were highly un-ideal for a semi-final. Were that game to get washed out, India would have progressed to the finals based on finishing top of their group! And add that to the fact that India knew that if they qualified for the semi final, they would play at Guyana regardless of where they finished in their group. The pitch at Guyana, and its bias towards spinners is definitely one of the reasons that India picked four spinners in their 15-member squad.

But we had the information about the pitch being spin friendly too and still decided on more pace than spin options in our squad - we could have had more spin available and we didn’t use it.

Ironically because of where they finished their group stage, India played on the pitch they were supposed to play on, so albeit I don’t agree Taney had it predetermined, they did in the end play on the right pitch.

I’ll agree about the associate nations vs full nations for all games bar SA - we gave as good as we got in that game and so nearly brought it across the line. We might have lost, but they were up against a competitive and strong SA and did not crumble when it was required.

I also understand the DLS idea, but I would always pick to NOT allow a strong batting team to set the chase because already the pressure is on you. Unless you’re confident you can take quick wickets which I wouldn’t say we were.

All in all, England didn’t deserve to make finals, the two lossless teams in the competition did and have. We played better than we did in the ODI CWC last year, made it through two group stages (one by the skin of our teeth but the Super8 we were through competitively and comfortably) and showed signs of good cricket along the way.

We just have thinks we now have to change and we need to start getting some younger players in otherwise we’re gonna be NZ come the next competition.

FMP- Research

I started my research by looking at the Skateboarding Olympics 2020 that happened in Tokyo. Looking at who competed and what it looked like. What did the competitors got marked on and what types of skateboarding disciplines were presented. Also looking at the information regarding the Olympics 2024.

There are 4 different stages. There are Men Skateboarding Park and Skateboarding Street. Then there is Women Skateboarding Park and Skateboarding Street.

The park competition takes place on a varied course combining bowls and numerous bends, which the athletes use to gather speed and perform tricks mid-air.

They are judged by the hight and speed they carry while performing the jumps.

Street competition takes place on a straight ‘street-like’ course with stairs, handrails, etc. set up to resemble the urban environments where skateboarding started out. Athletes perform a range of tricks and are also judged on how they control their board during the two 45‑second runs and five tricks they carry out.

Looking at the olympics has helped me understand the two different skating disciplines and how they are judged. I think this is useful information to know who won gold because they have gained recognition in the skating community and for future I could help me use a skater to be the ambassador for my brand. This will develop my further research looking in depth into street skating and park skating. Which one is most popular and will help determine my target audience.

DEADLINE: Lessons from the fall. You just listed several unscripted series that aired then. CBS’ didn’t have scripted originals at your disposal but made strategic moves by adding NCIS: Sydney as well as Yellowstone and SEAL Team repeats that largely paid off. What did you learn from their performance and did the idea to do more NCIS with Origins come out of the success of Sydney on the schedule?

REISENBACH: I’ll just start with NCIS: Origins. No, that was in development prior to that. And Sydney had obviously been in the works for quite a while.

I think we learned that we can experiment. I’ll just reference Survivor and Race. We actually had decided to turn those into 90-90 min prior to the strikes, but it just showed that we can look at things a little differently than we have in the past, trying to be a little non-traditional when it makes sense.

I think it shows the power of CBS. My big lesson is, when we put something on that speaks to our audience, they’re going to show up and watch.

And, while they didn’t have the full schedule of support around them the way they normally would, they still worked and had great audience support for both NCIS: Sydney and Yellowstone. We’re thrilled with how NCIS: Sydney did. It’s not just a win for CBS but it’s really a win for all of Paramount, for Paramount+, for Paramount International. Same with Yellowstone, I think it just speaks to that the company is working across all different parts right now as much as possible, and we’re all looking for those wins together.

DEADLINE: Obviously this came out of necessity, but is similar windowing of shows from other parts of the company something that you could use to supplement your schedule going forward?

REISENBACH: If the right project comes up, absolutely. We’re thrilled with the success of NCIS: Sydney. I think it’s been wonderful to have these franchise extensions; they’re each its own unique property. NCIS: Origins is really different than any of the other NCIS‘s; it makes me feel so old to say it’s period when it’s set in the 90s, kill me now, right?

It’s a little edgier and grittier than previous NCIS‘s, it’s got a serialized element of it that we’re really excited about. And whereas I would say NCIS: Sydney too really had its own identity, it was very uniquely Australian and told stories that can only be told in Australia, so I feel like they’re both opportunities to gain new audiences while also being true to the DNA and loyal fan base of those shows.

DEADLINE: Can you tease something about more NCIS: Sydney on CBS?

REISENBACH: I feel really positive and there will be news to come soon.

DEADLINE: In terms of NCIS, how long do you think the mothership can go? It is the longest-running CBS scripted series at 20 seasons.

REISENBACH: I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon. It’s a fantastic cast with a fantastic writing staff that’s been there a really long time. They’re just as reenergized today as they were as when I started on the show in Season 8 [as current executive].

So, as long as they want to keep it going, we’re thrilled to be on the NCIS train. Gary [Cole] and Wilmer [Valderrama] and Sean [Murray] and Katrina [Law], all of them, they love doing the show. So we hope to continue on for quite a while.

The Coast Life (Week 1)

Hello and welcome to my first summative blog! I am excited to share my experiences and observations with you as I embark on this Australian journey just a quick 19-hour flight time from my native Chicago.

For some context: I’m staying in a hostel-turned-housing-for-study-abroad-students operated by a company called SemesterInAustralia (SiA), or at least that’s how I describe it. I’m living here with another 13 students from the US and Canada split between singles and doubles, as well as a few older residents from Brazil, Japan, France, and even more places around the world! It was especially nice coming in knowing that two fellow University of Michigan students, Lauren and Caroline, would be staying in the same hostel as me and then meeting three more UM students once here! Even more nice — the fact that you could see Coogee Beach from our front door.

The morning I landed in Sydney, the sun was radiating and the sky was the bluest I’d seen in weeks. The winter I left in the northern hemisphere was quickly forgotten and replaced with sights of countless t-shirts and palm trees. As soon as I got to my hostel, I threw my bags in my room and was eager to start exploring. Lauren, Caroline, me, and Anthony, a student from the University of Buffalo took to the streets. After what seemed like a never-ending 1-minute walk, we were standing on Coogee Beach with our mouths dropped in astonishment at the fact that this was going to be our life for the next 4.5 months.

Coming from a family of beach-lovers, I swore at that moment that I would swim in the ocean everyday, no matter the hour, to take the fullest advantage of the opportunity that lie before me and make my family proud. We proceeded to explore the surrounding beach town, make some headway in the Coogee-Bondi coastal walk with magnificent views of the water and beaches, and try Vegemite, a spread for toast that locals rave about (though I can’t say it was a personal favorite). Throughout our voyage, I couldn’t help but notice how not a single piece of trash littered the streets and how every passersby face exuded a state of relaxation I can only achieve after submitting my last homework assignment of the year. Needless to say, no five minutes passed without one of us uttering, “I can’t believe we live here.”

After returning to the hostel, I met the rest of the students and we set off on a small tour into the city set up by SiA. Seeing the Opera House up close for the first time is something I’ll never forget. The rest of our first day in Sydney was full of name games, mild chaos navigating the transit system with such a big group, and lots of laughs.

The next challenge was finding a place to watch the upcoming Rose Bowl! Another UM student, Aanika, and I set out to a local sports bar to ask if they could show the game which would be playing at 9am on the morning of Jan 2nd. The bar happily agreed and that morning we showed up covered in UM gear. By the end, there were 11 of us students with another 10 locals who had strolled in biting our nails over the possible outcomes. The Michigan win put smiles on our faces and gave us the confidence to go to our orientation while still in our UM gear.

I wish I could say I did more than lie on various beaches, go on morning runs along the coast, and explore Coogee for the rest of my first week, but I didn’t — and I couldn’t be happier. Cheers!

Reflecting on development - a personal note

Memories come back to me from time to time for different reasons. When discussing the elusive topics of the more-than-human and posthumanism, at the same time I think of my distant childhood days, when at the age of twelve I lived in my middle school for about a year. It was not a proper boarding school, just an old classroom with 14 bunk bed / 28 roommates in it. All my belonging was in one big wooden box (like one of those boxes in old days woman get married with filled with marriage deposit by her parents. I wonder where that box is now?). There was no toilet in the building, meaning in the winter days of -5C you have to walk outside of the building to wee. Nor is there water supply. We each had a bucket which we fill with water and carry upstairs each day for brushing teeth and washing face. Of course no hot bath.

It sounds not only old, but like last century (indeed it is last century). But that was the humble upbringing of mine. My parents were distant from the start, maybe because I'm diciplined and too scared / anxious already.

Amid the frustration of finding I'm still not as confident, as outspoken, as articulative as I wish, as what you see young people from top universities naturally do today, I have to remind myself again and again the path I have walked to simply get here.

But what is this experience of any value other than self-content and even indulgence?

This summer I had the chance traveling to Australia and States. Somehow the kitchen and toilet got my attention. The western kitchen demonstrated a standard (or at least expected by airbnb users) - full sets of dishes (one big and one small) and cereal bowls, glasses, mugs, wine glasses. Behind these are their long maintained lifestyles. The form of the kitchen is compatible to (and co-evolved with) the sets of utensils over the period of 1-2 centuries. Even deeper beneath the organization (and diligence put in by housewives) is the aesthetics of order and cleaness. Walking into this kitchen from a chaotic, hot and splashing (dangerous!) Chinese kitchen, one can easily come back feeling ashamed and not "modern". (Let alone the fact that Chinese kitchen has exploded with kitchen appliances catering every particular needs in life thanks to consumerism and its big population base.) I myself has been one of them, coming back and trying to imitate one trick or two for a long time.

But this time I start to ask two things: what is the logic of a Chinese kitchen if it is not purely order and cleaness? And what are the the conflicting forces behind the kitchen that makes it "feeling messy and outdated"?

Memory comes again... not in a linear thread of thinking, but I thought of in my Western China hometown, noodle and potato was the stationary food. The only vegetable supply at the time was Chinese cabbage, and mom works diligently to make tomato sauce of our own each year - not for the sake of special flavour, but for keeping some tomato for the winter that goes to almost every dish. Local food is the manifestation of local produce and local economy. We had so much carb and so little meat and vege, and fish was a once in a year event. That's why hot oil splashed chili is a stationary on the dining table and can be added in every dish. We simply needed some flavours to go with all the carb.

And I remember how, in my teenage years, I bought a Dove chocolate bar, probably a 50 gram one, with 5 RMB (less than a US$). I ate it slowly, wrap it up carefully after each bite, and finished it over a week time.

Rather than thinking of this limited variety of food as a "lack", I'd say I didn't feel that way at all at that time. Lack is only when comparing to another and believing the other is better, being it a spatial comparison (seeing other people in other places) or temporal one (looking back from today). And really a spatial comparison when done in a particular and embodied way doesn't really lead to a feeling of lack. I remember when I was in primary our family visited my uncle's family in Shanghai. Their food was terrible in my then opinion. My taste is coupled with the food I grow up with.

So what does all this lead us to? Development (in postcolonial sense), or the project of modernization, is the backdrop of my upbringing. In a timespan of only 30 years I (and many people around me) in China marched from our humble food and kitchen, weekly hot shower, and 28-people dormitary to a modern life. We opened our kitchen, tore the wall, expanded it to host all the things that were shiny and new that we brought from our trips, that we invented in the same learnt spirit (or we think - I think of the Piet Mondrian style glasses that were in every Chinese family in early 90's, even no one knows his name at all. I think of the italian country style crochet sofa panel that never existed with a Italian grandma).

Is there a thing of our own? Did it exist? Can it be retrieved? Or maybe, among the rich and messy details of reality, among the memories like how I learnt to make noodle from scratch when I was 8 or so, such a "tradition" only exists when articulated and abstracted?

If the whole development project was a messy example of "learning another culture, or way of living", it seems to be an explosive one that bombed the original texture of life into pieces. Were we to do it differently, not in a way that the "advanced" trying to teach the "primitive" and the "primitive" trying to absorb and catch up, but as two strangers getting closer and conversing, both trying to understanding why are the difference there in the first place, to not only take the form of Monderian or crochet, but the logic of order and cleaness and the appreciation of Sicilian sun and time, could the process and result be different?

And what does that teach us to become "posthuman"?
