So I have two tabletop characters (Sial I haven’t actually played yet but I’ve worked a lot on his backstory) that are trans men and I thought it might be kind of neat to talk about their trans experiences?

Long post under the cut, with mentions of body parts, genitals, reproductive organs, and surgery that might be uncomfortable for some folk. 

Ashdale’s pronouns are he/him. He’s a fetchling ranger from a Pathfinder campaign. He was raised by ghosts and has a ghost boyfriend and also his companion is a ghost ferret. Ashdale’s got a thing for ghosts. 

Though he experienced some dysphoria when he was younger, he really only started identifying as male as a young adult. He worked as a fur trapper in colder parts and often wore a bulky cloak that made him look like a blob of a person–that, plus his tall height and people’s preconceptions, meant that he was often referred to as ‘he’ or ‘sir’. Ashdale had a responding feeling of “Ah. That feels correct.” whenever that happened. He started purposefully presenting as male. 

Ashdale has had top surgery and is on a sort of HRT process from a different surgery. Also he gotten a lot of nicks and scars from his adventuring life. 

This is Adleweiss (she/her), an old gnoll with bad cataracts in one eye. She was once a renown surgeon–technically what we’d consider a cosmetic surgeon–but for some reason is alone in the woods. Ashdale strikes up a friendship with her and she’s who preformed Ashdale’s surgeries. 

Adleweiss uses a combination of surgery and different types of Polymorph (check that spell out here) to alter appearances or the nature of things. Polymorph generally doesn’t work the best on people–usually people are too complex for the spell to be permanent, and you have to deal with how the individual’s will power will affect the spell. But Adleweiss realized it works better on parts–on smaller portions of a complex thing, rather than the whole complex thing itself. So instead of just polymorphing Ashdale into a body more true to what he feels and having that wear off or such, she removed his breast tissue and got down into his ovaries and polymorphed them to basically start producing testosterone. 

The effects of this are very similar to someone in real life injecting testosterone–Ashdale got more body hair, deepened his voice, had his clit grow, got greasy and got acne, had muscle mass shift, etc. This is an ongoing process and in game he was just starting to hit the height of these changes.

I’m not the best with tabletop mechanics and there’s probably some loose ends with how polymorph would work in that setting–but I think it’d work, and that’s part of Ashdale’s transition.  

(And then in game Adleweiss started using her skills for some real immoral shit and Ashdale broke off their friendship but that’s another story.)

Sialodil Witherwoe’s pronouns are he or they. For this post I’m going to use mostly he/him as his preference leans just slightly more towards that, but he enjoys when they/them pop-up too. Sial is a drow warlock who was ‘gifted’ a spiky slashing gauntlet from his patron (more like ‘accidentally got’ as their relationship is like him being a barnacle on a whale that doesn’t know he exists). Sial is for a Curse of Strahd D&D campaign planned for the future and he likes putting silver flakes on his face to feel pretty. 

Sial has not medically/surgically transitioned like Ashdale, but instead uses a vest that functions similar to how one might use a binder in real life–with some differences. 

For the sake of comparison/explaining the vest, let’s first look at a Bag of Holding. (There’s also a Handy Haversack and Portable Hole, which honestly the vest is closer too, but the Bag of Holding is more iconic and easier to draw. All those items are clickable if you want to learn more about them.) The Bag of Holding’s opening is essentially a portal to a larger interior space than what just a bag would have, it can hold a ridiculous amount of items–and even living creatures for a very short period of time (no air, as I understand it). 

And this is the Vest of Holding! There are two pocket-sized openings on the inside of the vest that lead to that ‘larger than the exterior’ space. A user would slide their breasts into these pocket-openings wherein they’d be hidden from this plane (technically no longer existing on this plane) to achieve a flat-chested look.

Unlike the Bag of Holding, the Vest requires a lot less space–both for the pocket and inside the pocket, so it’s not a great place to store anything besides the intended body part. It also has a lot of benefits as opposed to regular binding! Like the fact that you can be flat-chested regardless of how large the breasts actually are, you can wear it for extended periods of time, can exercise no problem with it on, and little to no stress on the ribs without the need for actual binding/constriction. 

Though… there’s probably some cons too. If a Bag of Holding is torn or pierced it ruptures, everything in it spills out, and it becomes useless. I think that could be dangerous and the Vests are probably made with a very durable leather padding over the Pocket openings. But because of that, wearing leather that close to the body with extreme adventuring probably means there’s a greater chance of overheating and such. 

But yeah, I think they would have been invented by a trans NPC for trans folk. Sial got his hands on one and loves wearing it–sometimes with a packer too, and sometimes not. He prefers the Vest to usual binding for the sole reason of it being easier for him to wear lower cut shirts but still feel masculine.

Shi Jin and Dae Young are then deployed to the fictional war-torn country of Urk on a long-term assignment of helping the United Nations keep peace in the area. After repeatedly being passed over for a promotion because of her lack of connections, Mo Yeon gives up performing surgeries, loosening her principles somewhat to become a celebrity TV doctor and caring for VIP patients at the hospital. But when she refuses the sexual advances of the hospital chairman, Mo Yeon is picked to lead a medical team to staff a clinic in Urk! There, Mo Yeon unexpectedly reconnects with Shi Jin.

Years later, Joo Won is an architect who is working on a new project to replace the former S Mall. With her keen eye for detail and sturdy building construction, Moon Soo ends up working for Joo Won on the project. Kang Doo works odd jobs to get by and ends up working at the new construction site.

How will they each deal with their respective pains as they are reminded of the event that changed all of their lives so profoundly?

6. Father Is Strange

This is one of those things that can disrupt a seemingly normal family. Byun Han Soo (Kim Young Chul) lives on the outskirts of Seoul with his selfless wife, Na Young Sil (Kim Hae Sook). Song Shi Ho (Kyung Soo Jin) is a fiercely competitive rhythmic gymnast who won a silver medal at the Asian Games when she was 18, but the pressures of her sport drive her to break up with Joon Hyung. Jo Ji-ah (Chae Soo-bin) is a woman who is trying to make it in life by creating her own businesses. However, after an encounter with Min-kyu, she ends up pretending to be a robot in place of the supposed Aji 3 robot. The Aji 3 robot was developed by Ji-ah's ex-boyfriend, professor Hong Baek-kyun (Um Ki-joon) and his team. The robot was meant to be tested by genius Min-kyu, however an accident caused the robot's battery to malfunction. As Baek-kyun modeled the robot after Ji-ah, the team ends up recruiting her to take the place of Aji 3.

finally finally got to have a happy apartment experience!!!!! tried out tea drops which are dope. there was a fair amount of stress revolving around APO induction and the musical rehearsal, but we made it!!! partied hardy (the infamous tess in the washing machine incident) kelli was watching always sunny more often than not. i wore some arguably bad clothing but ya know. gays. we tried to take off my closet door (it did NOT work). the beginning of the goose saga! there was a sleet storm so kelli and i made some popcorn and watched mike birbiglia’s new special. darci, kelli and i went out to eat and then ended up in babcock playing air hockey before watching videos with kai who was on duty. PEP BAND???? some good memories formed there. dogs in the library! got bullied by my library boss to put gas in my car and i sent her a video of proof that i did it “daddy long legs” “stop. what?” “the musical” (i do love timothy) i actually practiced my instrument lol wild. WE (becky, celeste, timothy and i) WATCHED SPIRIT and got wildly drunk -- the origin of “[redacted] [redacted] who???” which is my favorite joke.

MORE PEP BAND im actually really glad i spent my last few college months dicking around with the band. one man drumline!!! kai made some good tiktoks in our apartment! miss hanging with them it was really fun. oh i hung out with sam and celeste watching movies “he was a boy, she was a dolphin, can i make it anymore [strangled dolphin noises]” OUR MICROWAVE HANDLE BROKE OFF while kelli was gone man that entire apartment was falling apart (hey dumbass grab from top) -- a list of things that were broken in our apartment: fridge light, front entry light, showerhead, phone. the birth of the beans insta!!!! got hit on when i was at taco bell with timothy by being accused of being trans (taco bell guy was not far off to be fair). oh the improv posters as compared to the posters i built for an organization fair. went out and got daRUNK at what appears to be wandas. really struggled with my period. cut hair with kelli n darci. BAGPIPE CORPS INTERNATIONAL. virtual band wreaked havoc on my animals mental health. my grandmother would always bug me while i was working which i understand now was misplaced love but it was so irritating at the time. we had library meetings once a week or so that was vital to mental health. hosted a really fun “panel” about queer identity for my queer lit class that was able to educate a lot of people. having a capstone class with am*lia was a nightmare. watched a cirque du soleil show for free and lost my mind. wrote a comedic monologue that i suffered through. suffered through papers and projects. worked on a project with celeste and kelli and we had SUCH a good time. i hosted several jackbox nights for both apo and kpy. that was SUCH an exhausting experience. also uno and drawful with the uno group (kelli would win 100% of the time). ranted about group projects lol i struggled. OH THE MOVE OUT DEBACLE i really went off the deep end. kelli’s virtual birthday!!!!

we had so many good jackbox nights. academic showcase and honors convocation happened wherein i was name bronco award winner and that really wrecked me too lol. we had a sunday crew hang out for library workers. clarinet game night too! i tried so hard to build community during covid and im not altogether sure i accomplished it but ya know whatever. watsky broke the record! made my “aced it” grad cap which was so FUNNY and still is tbh. becky taught me how to do makeup. took grad pictures at an abandoned farmhouse lol OH MY GOSH BEAUX ARTS AND APO SKIT i was so proud of that night and annette said it was the best one we’d ever had. wish i had done more but we did it boys. also got VERY drunk for it lol completely redid my room. bc it was NASTY. the way i write papers is so SO funny to me. had our last capstones class and then dressed in grad outfits for our last lit meeting . graduated and got all my stuff from college finally. went shopping with timothy, had el puerto with becky (i think?). oh the infamous miller moths UGH shit is nasty. THE FORMING OF BANJO SHRIMPS occurred on may 24 2020 and that was the absolute best thing to come out of this year. started working at my dads agency which was the absolute worst thing to come out of this year. attended my first protest in cos which was good and healthy. started protesting regularly after that. my most poignant memory was laying down in front of city hall and chanting “i cant breathe” for 8 minutes.

went back to hc for a birthday “party” and to see the band. did a lot in that weekend (stayed with timothy’s family, helped becky move, met kelli’s look-alike, saw timothy and karlie’s new house!!! had lunch with kellis family which is closest to “meet my parents” i think i’ll ever get lmao). got my prof headshots and hate every single one of them but more for self esteem reasons lol. neighbors got goats and my mom lost her marbles. got trapped in traffic on the way back from hc. niko had crackhead energy. oooooooh documented gender crisis. ma got more chickens. went to a birthday party for a high school friend and was just... so out of my element. its weird. took off my grandma’s bathroom door bc she had knee surgery. started a full time job as my grandmother’s caretaker (love working for the family business lol).

Some Notes: T Cooper’s “Real Man Adventures”

Honestly, didn’t love this one... it was an experimental structure that could have created a compelling whole, but instead came across as scattered, random, and occasionally... abrasive? I think I just didn’t like the author’s personality very much? Which perhaps isn’t a super fair response, but not liking someone’s personality makes it tough to enjoy their memoir since it’s all about them in their voice.  The overarching theme of the memoir explored constructs of masculinity in American culture and the author’s observations of male social behavior in public/private life. Cooper seemed deeply conflicted about his own sense of masculinity and sometimes poked fun at, sometimes defended his insecurities around his height, passing privilege, whiteness. There were interviews between him and his friends/family, unsent letters, short poetry, some collage/photographs, personal anecdotes, essays, a list of famous men (mostly actors) who are Cooper’s height or shorter, a survey of his male friends’ bathroom habits (specifically, whether they sit or stand while they pee) and a lot of footnotes/asides/tangents. As much as trans discourse has worked to deconstruct a gender binary and emphasize the performative nature of masculinity/femininity, in this text, Cooper seems mostly interested in confirming whether or not he is a “real man,” and discerning whether the people around him see him as such or place him in the category of the “abnormal.” Throughout the work, he gives voice to his frustration at having to “out” himself to doctors, having people ask about the scars on his chest from his top surgery, and generally expresses a desire to pass as male without social scrutiny. Definitely gives voice to an important perspective on how people treat trans people like guinea pigs/don’t respect typical social boundaries and feel like they can ask invasive, personal questions to satiate their own curiosity. I sort of took his conclusion to be that he wishes there weren’t so many thresholds/requirements to being a man. But he also doesn’t use his observations to ultimately critique these limits on masculinity and argue for a more open paradigm. Rather, seems to resent that he sometimes can’t pass muster, just wants to “fit in.” At one point- discusses people who distance themselves from being a “trans man” or “trans woman” and simply want to be a “man” or “woman.” Asks a lot of questions of his family (”am I the same person?” “was I more boy/girl like as a child?”) and friends... analyzes moments where people accepted his gender presentation / apparent heterosexuality (”better go ask the missus”) versus challenged it... talks about how much he resents not having had the chance to play football, etc. So... rather than deconstructing masculinity / gender performance, seems to try and explore whether he personally “measures up” (sometimes literally) to normative standards for men.

He also manages to insult a lot of people and communities as he tells his story. Does a weird comparative suffering thing with quadriplegics, alcoholics... And then he brings up multiple times this defensive thing about how even though he’s white, people sometimes think he’s Mexican or Middle Eastern, which he claims gives him insight into what it’s like to be racially profiled in public spaces like airports? Equates this experience to his fear/anxiety around using public restrooms. These were some weird comparisons to me. One of the more egregious moments: insulting / degrading sex workers under the guise of critiquing masculinity. Played a game called “truck driver/hooker” as a kid, and as an adult, concludes that men act like strippers are sexy and exciting, but really what they’re doing is “desperate” and depressing. Lastly, talks a lot about how “masculine” his taste is (categorizing things like clothes, tv shows, sports), expresses pride in enjoying typically masculine activities. Makes a lot of jokes about how he just doesn’t “get” women, and his wife gets upset that he doesn’t understand her emotions. Also jokes (?) about how his wife is so hot that it validates his masculinity. These things felts weird and misogynistic. 

All in all, I really wanted to like this book, especially because I thought the hybridized formal structure was interesting, but it just wasn’t my favorite.  Misc notes -Discusses public nature of so many people’s transitions on YouTube, social media, but his own discomfort with this public paradigm, desire for privacy. Hints that post-top surgery photos may or may not be of him, includes a chapter on sex that simply says he says will not discuss his sex life, talks about everyone’s obsession with whether or not he has a dick and concludes it’s nobody’s business. Which are fair limits. But then, how does his desire for privacy fit in with writing a memoir. Difficult to negotiate these boundaries, especially in this genre; hard to anticipate/respond to reader questions while respecting author’s boundaries. -Emphasis on nuclear/biological family (wife, kids, brother, parents) -Personal coming out narrative: still a fraught relationship about his transition with his parents, with whom he is close but doesn’t discuss gender stuff. Talks about them but not to them, uses a proxy to address them (this object, interviews about them with brother, interviews with trans friends’ parents to see how they reacted to their children’s transitions to get a sense of how his parents might feel.

-Some reviews echo my sentiments. One review: “I didn’t like this book, but I wanted to.” A Goodreads conclusion: “T Cooper comes across as a real asshole. This is everything I dislike about some members of my male identified cohort. The belief in the binary, the reification of bullshit macho behavior as a result of T, and the general embrace of misogyny.”

A detransitioned woman recently conducted a survey of detransitioners (Stella, 2016c). Though the survey was only open for two weeks, more than 200 women completed it. Clearly, there are more than just a handful of people who are coming to re-identify as female. The survey results are compelling.

• 92.5% of those who responded said that their dysphoria was the same or better after detransitioning than during transition.

• Only 8% of respondents felt somewhat or completely positive toward their own transition, whereas 60.2% felt somewhat or completely negative toward it.

Following are quotes from the individual comments included by survey respondents:

• “I used transition as self-harm. It destroyed so many parts of my life.”

• “My seeking medical and social transition led to a deep spiral of depression and lack of identity—and was probably also caused by those things. The social ostracization led to increased anxiety and my grades were devastated.”

• “I was a train wreck waiting to happen and transition fed the insecurities, anxiety and hopelessness” (Stella, 2016c).

The following is a quote from detransitioner and blogger Max Robinson, with her permission:

I transitioned FtM (female to male) at 16, was on testosterone and had a double mastectomy by 17. 

I absolutely am traumatized by what happened to me, and I'm not the only one. I'm a part of support networks for women who stopped transition that have over 100 members, and that's just the individuals who have gone looking for others with this experience and found us.Early in my transition, I went through menopause. This caused vaginal atrophy and drip incontinence that has persisted for years. I piss myself slowly all day now; it's really not cute or fun. I refused to acknowledge it was connected to the HRT-caused vaginal atrophy that immediately preceded its onset until months after going off testosterone. Yeah, I signed a paper saying I knew that could happen. I also thought this treatment was my only hope for coping with the intense feelings of alienation/disgust with my femaleness. I was wrong. Transition didn't help. It did harm, harm that I now have to learn how to live with on top of all the shit I thought transition would fix.

My double mastectomy was severely traumatizing. I paid a guy, a guy who does this every day for cash, to drug me to sleep and cut away healthy tissue. I did this because I believed it would heal all of the emotional issues I was blaming on my female body. It didn't work. Now I'm still all fucked up and I'm missing body parts, too.

There is no surgery that will undo what's been done… adding synthetic materials to resemble the tissue of mine that was incinerated years ago would not help me. It took 3 years of stuffing down every negative feeling about my mastectomy before I was ready to face that what happened did harm to me. I was off hormones for months before I admitted to myself that I deeply, deeply regretted this surgery. I have lost my breasts and I have lost the chance to reconcile with my breasts. It wouldn't be easy, but it would be work worth doing. Now the work before me instead is reconciling with what I've done and with the chest I have now—flat, scarred, asymmetrical, and nerve-damaged. (Robinson, 2016)

Detransitioner and blogger Cari Stella went on testosterone and had a double mastectomy as a teenager. In a video she made, she lets viewers know that she is not just some statistic. Looking right at the camera, she tells us that “I'm a real live 22-year-old woman with a scarred chest, and a broken voice and a five o'clock shadow because I couldn't face the idea of growing up to be a woman. That is my reality” (Stella, 2016a).

It has been demonstrated that pediatric transition can have serious side effects and comes with the possibility of a high incidence of regret. Now I would like to discuss how social factors and therapeutic practices are playing a role in encouraging young people to transition.

In recent years, young people (tweens and teens) have been presenting with dysphoria “out of the blue” without ever having expressed any gender variance before (https://transgendertrend.com/rapid-onset-gender-dysphoria-research-study/). An announcement of being transgender is often preceded by anxiety, depression, social isolation, loss, or trauma. This now-common presentation was virtually unheard of until a few years ago. The sudden onset of gender dysphoria seems to be correlated with a couple of factors.

One is social media use. On sites such as YouTube, thousands of homemade videos chronicle the gender transitions of teenagers. The Tumblr blog “Fuck Yeah FTMs” features photo after photo of young FtMs celebrating the changes wrought by testosterone. “I finally have freedom!” posters boast under photographs of their scarred chests post mastectomy. “I'm no longer pre-T!” boasts another under a video of someone injecting testosterone. “My name is Cameron! I'm a nineteen-year-old nonbinary/trans person living in Ohio! I'm excited to say that yesterday was my first injection! I am so happy with the person I am becoming.” Almost all of these posters are under 25 years of age.

Young people can find plenty of in-group validation online. There is an incredibly positive climate around being trans in many places on the Internet. On just one of the hundreds of thousands of YouTube videos that document the poster's “top surgery,” there are 48 comments such as:

“Can't believe how far you've come! You are amazing in every way!”

“So proud and happy for you.”

“You are totally rad.”

“By the way, you are totally attractive.”

Young people are also finding validation online for their self-diagnosis as transgender. The blog transgenderreality.com meticulously details the process by which a questioning young person is encouraged to understand his or her symptoms as evidence of being trans. Young people on reddit and other social media sites explain that they started wondering whether they were trans because they enjoyed creating opposite-sex avatars in online games and liked the clothing or hairstyles of the opposite sex. Commentators frequently respond by telling them they sound like a “textbook case” and congratulate them on “finding out early.”

The second correlative factor is having peers who also identify as trans. We are seeing kids coming out together in peer groups. The following quotes are all taken from parent comments on the blog 4thwavenow unless otherwise noted.

We are a progressive family caught in the teenage transgender wave. It's so scary. I can't even put it into words. What we are seeing are pockets of teens in different towns who are declaring themselves either non-binary or transgender. In many cases, these are teens who showed no gender variance at all, and then they get connected with a group in their high school, and suddenly a large percentage of them are identifying this way. The information they find on the Internet convinces them that physical transitioning via hormones and surgery is not only the only way to go but should also be available to them right now, as soon as they want it. I am very concerned that the medical community is not looking at the sheer number of teens, post-puberty, who are making these kinds of declarations and asking whether this can be genuine or a temporary stop on the process of figuring out one's identity as a teenager. Peer influence is just so huge in these kids. As soon as they turn 18, they are seeking medical intervention, and the model now is informed consent, so we have lots of teenagers and young adults making permanent changes to their bodies when their brains have not yet reached adulthood. Very, very scary.

In my daughter's extra-curricular activity, one of the groups has about 20 kids in it (all teenagers). Seven of those kids are natal females. THREE of those seven females are publicly out as FTM. This does not include my daughter, who has never come out publicly. So four of seven girls have some issue with gender identity. Of the three girls who have socially transitioned, one is on testosterone and has had surgery. All are under 18. All of them made this discovery after puberty.

My daughter befriended some trans kids from her acting troupe. When you look at this group, each year they are something different. There are kids who, upon joining, are just “allies,” the next year they are bisexual, the next year they are gay, and then the final year, they are trans. And at every step of the way, they are being applauded and receiving so much positive support from themselves, each other, the group, the grownups, and the audiences they address (I call this the “echo chamber”). But it's fishy. Why are there so many kids who, the more they hang out, all of a sudden, they are trans too? It doesn't make sense.

My daughter, who is 17, told me last year on Mother's Day that she was now my son. When I began researching this subject, I was extremely concerned with the medical intervention that takes place with these children. Then when I went to a meeting for parents with transgender children, I was shocked about how all of these parents were jumping on the bandwagon of drugs and surgery without questioning. They even complain about wait times for surgeries! Unfortunately, here in Canada, children as young as 16 can make medical decisions for themselves and parents are not allowed to intervene (and surgeries are free).

My daughter decided she is transgender just as soon as she learned of it as a concept, in her senior year of high school. The previous school year she was dealing with a lot of anxiety and stress. She learned of transgender from a small high school group of friends. The university diversity center director took a group of transgender students to a free gender clinic, where my daughter then returned and received, after a single visit, a prescription for testosterone.I am the mother of a young man in his late 20s who, within the space of just a few months of bingeing on reddit and YouTube transition videos, decided that he was transgender, and is undergoing transition at a frightening speed. Obviously, he is old enough to do whatever he pleases, and all I can do is grieve quietly as I watch him from afar as he destroys his physical and mental health.

In my local high school my daughter is in the marching band. She plays an instrument, but she is friends with many girls in the color guard. There are about 25 members of the color guard this year. All of them are natal female. Last year my daughter told me that almost all of them felt they were lesbian. This year, almost all of them feel they are transgender, agender, or, at the very least, are questioning their gender identities. I've noticed that many of them have similar haircuts and that some of them are binding. Many constantly discuss their gender identities and agonize about “coming out” to their parents. Their lives seem to be focused on this subject 24/7, which has driven away certain non-transgender friends. No adults have stepped into help, even though they are aware of what is happening. Biography

Lee is a teenage runaway, his story contains mentions of child abuse, alcoholism, drug abuse, and ghosts...Obviously.

When someone walks the very thin line between life and death, things can happen. So even after the doctors said to expect the worse, after Lee's technical two deaths, and after fighting for weeks----he makes it out alive. Adults passed off the hushed whispers to seemingly no one and the quick glances towards nothing in particular as a sign that Lee held a very ACTIVE imagination. He certainly did, but this certain aspect in his life WASN'T the imagination running wild. Kids were harder to handle, they were brutal towards the weird kid who talked to himself. As Lee grew older, the more he learned how to keep it all in. He didn't converse with the dead in public, he learned to keep his focus on the living----he learned how to act like he wasn't special.

He's six when his dad first shows him his first HORROR movie and it sparks something in him. Who knew KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE would create an OBSESSION for the dark and gritty world of horror. It was easier to relate to characters because of his abilities and as he'd get older he'd find it as a coping mechanism. No matter how HORRIFYING his own life would seem, there was no way it was GETTING KIDNAPPED BY A SERIAL KILLER AND CUTTING OFF YOUR OWN FOOT horrifying.

His parents get divorced when he's young, their marriage just isn't working out. They spend more time screaming and clawing at each other's throats than anything else. Their YOUNG LOVE spark is gone and it's just devolving into hate at this point. He doesn't quite get it, but he has other things to worry about. He has his grades to focus on and the dead to actively ignore ( it's a full time job ). His mom gets full custody of him, she has a better job and can support the two of them while his dad crashes on his friend's couch until he can save up enough from his shitty job to get his own place.

His mom starts dating. He's fine with it at first, as long as she's happy. He doesn't even realize his mom is drunk, just that she comes home acting weird. It starts a pattern. His mom starts seeing terrible, abusive men and her drinking habits become more and more apparent. He tries his best to help her, but he's a CHILD and she won't accept his help. Her focus on him lessens with time and soon he's just a kid that lives with them rather than her son. His dad gets a new girlfriend and she's jealous of him---he takes up too much of his dad's attention when he's there. She starts to hate him and eventually his dad begins to fade out of the picture. He starts to learn he needs to survive on his own.

Fourteen and things begin to spiral. Ghosts start to become more violent towards him and SCREAM when they can't get him to help. He's just a kid The abuse from his mom worsens as she lashes out at him and he's neglected more often than not. He starts stealing just to eat. Which attracts a VERY BAD group of people his way. They want someone fast and good with their hands to steal for them and Lee was desperate for a friend and was already one of the fastest kids on his track team. So he goes from a good kid with good intentions to doing terrible things just to make sure someone stays for him. He has to be useful for them. The comfort from watching horrors aren't doing it anymore. He's either too numb or too scared to keep going.

Sixteen and a lot happens in a year. He comes out as transgender and his family doesn't approve, he expected that. They mark it off as a phase and go out of their way to remind him he's supposed to be a GIRL. He meets his best friend that year. Haley, someone who managed to see more than some terribly troubled kid. They reminded him he was someone and he was actually WORTH something. It didn't stop him from dropping out of high school when things got TOO overwhelming, but it did help him try and focus on his end goal. Get the fuck out of this horrible town.

Seventeen and the guy he's been off and on with loses his temper. He hits him and Lee snaps. He's not going to let what happened with his mom happen to him. He's not going to be pushed around by some cowardly guy with an out of control anger. So he packs his things and asks Haley to run off to L.A with him. It's hard at first. They're homeless teenagers, finding a job is hard, and there are more ghosts in a big city than there is a small town. He attracted them, they lashed out, he got scared, but it wasn't going to make him run back home. Not yet, not when he knows he can make it. He's a talented kid. They get jobs and eventually raise enough money to get a shitty, cheap ( cheap in L.A standards anyway ) apartment. They barely scrape by some months, going some weeks without power or water. It was a lot more difficult than he imagined it being.

He starts to transition and he lands a part in some small films, lands a few decent roles in some indie movies. It's a dream come true, but it's not enough to live off of. He's struggling and he wishes he would have thought everything out more than he actually did. He's happier, though. He's not in a toxic environment and he can finally be himself. It's still not EASY for a mentally ill kid, but it's better.

Then at the age of nineteen, he gets an audition for a BIG, ANTICIPATED HORROR. The director's well known and is pretty trust worthy with the genre so the chance has Lee's stomach in flips. Then his power finally comes in handy----a nice ghost girl makes a deal with him. She'll take notes of the auditions and the comments their reactions and report back to him, if he got the part he would have to help her move on. Sure enough, he lands it! It's a big part, one of the leads. He still DIES in the end, but it's more than he could have hoped for.

It's his big break. The movie is successful for a horror and the reviews weren't nearly as harsh as he had expected. Some critics even praised his performance! Thank God for that sweet ghost who helped him get what he wanted. He starts to get more offers, land more roles, get more recognized---his dream's coming true. Things are still DIFFICULT for him, but it's BETTER.
