Materials science and engineering career fair connects students with industry opportunities

Students in the MIT Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) got to mingle with potential employers interested in their specific skills this fall when the department held its first DMSE Career Fair.

More than 20 companies, organizations, and laboratories set up booths in Walker Memorial on Oct. 20 while undergraduates and graduate students streamed in wearing collared shirts and dress slacks and carrying resumes and business cards. Giants such as Corning, IBM, Intel, and ThermoFisher Scientific, as well as startups — including MIT and DMSE spinouts — were on hand to discuss job and internship opportunities.

“We are always hiring,” says Dina Yuryev PhD ’17, senior research engineer at Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a fusion power company with MIT roots.

Yuryev earned her PhD from DMSE in 2017. She shared that when she first looked for jobs, many were in computer science; fewer were materials-focused.

“Materials is such an important field and really critical for technology development both in fusion but also just in clean energy,” Yuryev says. “So it’s really cool to see all of these companies here who really care about materials.”

Tailored opportunities

Career Fair attendees appreciated the enthusiasm. One was Christian Duessel, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering. He plans to declare a double major this year in materials science and engineering.

“It’s nice that it’s smaller and more directed at us. If you’re going up to a company, they’re here because they want to hire Course Threes,” Duessel says, using the MIT naming convention for the major.

The event was hosted by DMSE’s academic office and FORGE, the department’s professional development and alumni relations program. Bringing together companies and organizations looking for materials science and engineering skills in one place is exactly what the organizers were looking to do — something that MIT’s annual Fall Career Fair, with hundreds of recruiters and thousands of attendees, can’t.

“This targeted approach ensures that our students have access to opportunities that align closely with their academic background and interests,” says Rebecca Shepardson, undergraduate administrator in DMSE.

Also, materials science and engineering is a rapidly evolving field with applications across industries, Shepardson says. “A specialized fair like this lets us showcase the breadth of hiring and internship opportunities — and it lets us connect students with employers that are really at the forefront of innovation.”

That diversity of application was not only evident in the recruiter roster, which included companies in energy, mining, health care, manufacturing, and more, but also the career goals of attendees.

Duessel, who is taking class 3.17 (Principles of Manufacturing), wants a process engineering position in semiconductor manufacturing.

“I’ve always been interested in manufacturing — how things actually get made,” Duessel says, “but then also I get to apply materials science principles and with a communication side to it — it’s a very people-focused job.”

Mrigi Munjal, a PhD student in DMSE who studies the supply chain for nickel in battery production, has a few years left before graduating but wants to see what jobs are out there.

“I’m just trying to understand what work culture is like for PhD students in startups and then maybe contrast that with the big companies to see if there’s a difference in roles and responsibilities,” Munjal says.

“Smart, passionate people”

On the other side of the booths, recruiters were equally interested in exploring the applicant pool. Tom Kalantar, senior research-and-development fellow at chemicals and plastics manufacturer Dow, was at the fair to talk to people about onsite interviews the company does at DMSE starting each August, as well as a digital internship program for scientists and engineers.

“The skills that the students bring or are acquiring here, and the creativity that they show in doing their work here, are the kinds of things that we are looking for broadly at Dow,” Kalantar says.

Kyle Dominguez ’20, a DMSE alumnus and research scientist at Sublime Systems, said his startup is hiring every kind of engineer — mechanical, chemical, materials science, civil. Sublime, which uses electrochemistry to make low-carbon cement, was founded by former DMSE postdoc Leah Ellis and Professor Yet-Ming Chiang.

“The biggest skill set that we’re looking for is smart, passionate people who want to change the way the world makes cement,” Dominguez says. The company is now expanding into its first commercial production phase. “There are a lot of problems to solve to get to the point where we’re actually at scale.”

While recruiters sought diverse talent, students like Kim Cheng had other reasons beyond an immediate job search for attending the DMSE event. The DMSE senior has a job lined up after graduation — she’s moving to Chicago to work at a 3D printing startup. She was at the fair mainly to show departmental spirit and support.

“If it was last year, I would have come fully prepared with my resume,” Cheng says.

Still, Cheng sees value for any student, with or without a post-graduation job, to visit career events and talk to recruiters, especially at one as targeted as the DMSE fair.

“It’s important to know your options and know the scope of the field,” Cheng says. “Just getting a better idea and getting more comfortable talking to representatives, I think, is an incredibly helpful skill.”

Calling all advice

I received the following message: 

Hi! I'm a junior molecular bio major at UCLA and I was wondering if you knew anything getting jobs in research out of undergrad? I'm going on my second year of working in a lab, and I've learned that while I really enjoy the actual lab work (bench work, trouble shooting problems, learning and perfecting techniques) I don't so much enjoy the writing and issues that come up with the academia part. To be honest, I feel like getting a PhD for me would be unnecessary for what I want to do. I would love to just work a standard lab junkie job that gets me by, allows me to pay the bills and live my life comfortably. I can't help but feel embarrassed by it because I feel like there's a big emphasis on passion in science. I am passionate, I love doing it, but I just don't think all the critical thinking and writing that comes with a PhD is what I want. Also, I've had a rough time the first two years of undergrad, I was working full time and had some family/relationship issues I was working through which seriously affected my GPA. This quarter is the first quarter I feel I learned to be a student and actually got okay grades. My GPA is sitting at a 2.79 and I don't think I would be able to get into any good grad programs anyway. I don't want to commit 5-6 years of my life to something I'm pretty sure I won't enjoy and will probably regret. What are your thoughts? I wanted to ask this as a questions just in case others gradblrs you know had any input, you are free to post this if you think this is the case! Thank you for any advice you may have for me.

Hi! Thanks for the message. Honestly, I think getting a job with a bachelor's may be a little challenging, depending on what you want to do. I know of people with bachelor's working for places like ThermoFisher and i have two friends who who work in pharmaceutical labs - they primarily operate one instrument all day every day but I know there are a lot of people without advance degrees at both of their companies. 

If you are interested in working in academia, I would really suggest a master's degree. All of the lab techs I know have an M.S. Being a lab tech sounds like something you would be interested in - they do just what you mentioned: trouble shoot problems, perfect techniques, and do actual lab work, in addition to helping to teach/manage students and some administrative type work. Unlike the people I know with bachelor's degrees, lab techs are a bit more open as to what they do each day and aren't limited to one or two instruments. Regarding your GPA, I was literally in the same position (although my goal is to get a Ph.D). Master's programs are easier to get into, particularly if there is a program that will take you at your home institution. It involves some of the parts you don't like- coming up with problems and some writing for thesis programs - but it's a 2-year commitment rather than 5-6. 

In April, the annual Experimental Biology conference is being held in San Diego. I went last year (and am attending this year as well!) and it's a great place to meet both industry folks and academia. It would be a great place to network and ask around about potential jobs, plus the meeting on the whole is just fantastic. I am a member of ASBMB and they will have a full day of professional development the day before meeting begins that you might find helpful as well.

Gov. Baker Congratulates 15 Statewide Winners of MassEcon Impact Awards

BOSTON – Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker congratulated the 15 MassEcon winners of the Fourteenth Annual Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Awards, telling them, “You have competed in all shapes and sizes and played in all kinds of spaces” in the Commonwealth.

“This is part of the incredible embedded intellectual capital of the Commonwealth from one end to the other,” Baker said, addressing a record MassEcon Impact Awards crowd of more than 350 people at a luncheon at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel.

It was Baker’s third appearance at the annual event. “I really enjoy hearing about what is going on at companies honored by MassEcon,” Baker said, adding that he had visited about half of the winning companies and Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Jay Ash had probably toured headquarters of the other half.

Ash joined winners and MassEcon members at a reception before the lunch, which was emceed by WBZ-TV News Anchor Lisa Hughes.

Together this year’s winners have added almost 1,000 jobs to the Commonwealth, invested over $381 million, and expanded their facilities by more than 2 million square feet since January 2016.

Winners in each of five regions of the Commonwealth were selected in Gold, Silver, and Bronze categories, the Gold awards going to ThermoFisher Scientific in Waltham for Greater Boston; Cumberland Farms in Westborough for the Central Region; U.S. Tsubaki in Chicopee for the West Region; Kronos in Lowell for the Northeast Region; and Cold Chain Technologies in Franklin for the Southeast Region.

The winners “represent the backbone of the economy – both local and for export – that Massachusetts has become,” said Brian Cohen, Chair of the MassEcon Board of Directors.

Girard Sargent, President of Citizens Bank Massachusetts, which was a lead sponsor of the event, introduced Baker, commending his regional approach. “We have leadership in New England that is functioning,” Sargent said. “We thank him for investing in the workforce here in the Commonwealth and being a terrific collaborator.”

Christopher Todd, Senior Vice President of Operations and Chief Services Officer for Kronos, accepted the award for his company, which undertook a half-million-square-foot expansion in Lowell and added 200 new jobs. “Great businesses are powered by great people,” he said, noting it is the company’s 10th anniversary.

Cold Chain Technologies, which consolidated three locations with a $10 million expansion, was celebrating its 50th anniversary. Larry Gordon, Chief Executive Officer, said, “We’re both proud and humbled to be the Gold Winner.”

Dan Shine, Senior Vice President and President of the Analytics Instruments Group at ThermoFisher Scientific, noted that the company had its origins at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956. “We enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer,” he said. The company’s new headquarters in Waltham are certified LEED Silver for sustainability.

Mike Tierney, Vice President of Construction and Planning at Cumberland Farms, which invested $15.5 million and added 300 jobs with a new 100,000-square-foot corporate office in Westborough, thanked the company’s 8,000-plus employees “for your contributions to this great state.” He added, “We provide the bare essentials 24/7/365,” referring to filling the needs of emergency responders at more than 200 locations in Massachusetts alone.

All the winning companies were recognized for making outstanding contributions to the Massachusetts economy. The winners were noted for job growth, investment, facility expansions, and community involvement.

The winning companies come from across the state, range in size, and were drawn from diverse industries, including life sciences, medical devices, information technology, food, footwear, advanced materials, and the automotive industry.

The Job requires expertise in either of the Genetic Analysis techniques offered by ThermoFisher- such as NGS (ION Torrent), Capillary Electrophoresis, Real-time PCR, Microarray ( Affymetrix).

Good knowledge of basic Molecular Biology techniques is absolutely essential, as also the use of ancillary equipment for MOL BIO experiments.

The role will comprise of customer interactions in the Lab environment as well as site visits as necessary for Demonstrating and training on our platforms, kits. The candidate will also be part of the team processing samples in projects assigned to our lab for Sequencing or Microarray-based analysis.

The role would need good communication skills for customer-facing activities such as Demos, presentations, training and pre-sales- discussions- either at the customer site or in the Lab.

The candidate should have a good understanding of Windows-based tools for Analysis of data – for the applications or platforms that are stated here. Basic knowledge of biology for various plan and animal / microbial systems will help in the finer aspects of the role.

Experience

M.Sc with 2-3 years hands-on experience in relevant technologies like mainly Capillary Electrophoresis, NGS (ION Torrent) or Affymetrix Microarray OR

PhD. with 1-2 years of relevant experience is also acceptable.

Travel occasional, mostly work will be based in the Lab
