Tonight after a hard day at work I went out for a drink with a girlfriend of mine. She is a freshly 21, brilliant and beautiful young Latina woman and I am the ugly friend. While she and I were having a discussion on racism, as a mutual friend of ours was jumped this morning in a racially charged incident, a young Hispanic gentleman joined our conversation. He wasn't rude or demanding, he just wanted to understand a little more about our views and put a few words in before going back to his friends. It was a good 10 minutes before he went back to his friends... Within 5 more minutes he had pulled into the chair next to me (we were seated at the edge of the bar with her on the end) and reestablished the conversation she and I were starting to move away from before almost completely dominating it. The conversation had turned from black lives to Hispanic lives (not that one was worth more then the other but that the struggles were similar) and he brought up a lot of latin/hispanic culture and background. While the information was relevant, I as the white one, don't have much information on it and therefore haven't much to say. Either way, I was obviously not the one he wanted to talk to but he had the sense to not be unkind to me especially when I try to interject bits and pieces where I can. My friend, to her credit was clueless. As his friends leave him, because he has abandoned them, he complains that they are ditching him to which we point out that he did so first. When he disappeared briefly to say goodbye to his friends my girlfriend suggested that he was interested in me which was hilarious as I was not included in that conversation much at all. He returns to further insert himself into our evening now completely unimpeded by our company. There was no asking if he could join us, he just joined us. There was literally no opportunity whatsoever for us to turn down his company without having to become a bitch. Pool is offered, us against him, of he wins he gets someone's phone number because we're "cool to hangout with. That's all." We had already told him no on the phone number several times. When I went to use the restroom he apparently made his move onto my friend. For someone who has no talent at gaming I magically played a damn good pool game. I also starting swiping balls into the pocket from the sides when he wasn't looking. I learned years ago that when a guy is trying to win points with your friend by being nice to you, you take that free drink. It got him away for long enough for her to see what I meant when I told her what was happening. He lost and then asked for another game, pressing more for a phone number, mine or hers. She went to pay her tab and to shut him up I agreed I'd take his number. He knew his craft well because he wouldn't say his phone number and I was forced to switch phones with him. He then called himself from my phone (I was typing in a false one) after saving it, took his phone back so I couldn't "accidently" delete it. She had returned at this point and he followed us as I closed my tab, making uncomfortable conversation with her about her phone number, us all hanging out and if we wanted a cigarette, anything to make us stay. It's been hours and I'm still angry. From the first conversation it was obvious that if she or I called him out we would have been gaslighted from there on so our option was simply start a scene or make the best out of it. Why can't men just understand to leave us alone? We have said no. Stop asking. You are being polite but your intentions are still clear and you need to stop. The last time I told a man to stop and leave my friends and I alone he made a HUGE scene. He got the manager of the establishment over and attempted to have me thrown out for "suggesting" that he was hitting on me. So I don't want to hear any bullshit about "speaking up for yourself" or what you would have done. My friend watched while that fiasco happened and said nothing as they were equally shocked as I was. If I say nothing I'm a coward or antifeminist. If I say something I'm attacked further. Being the ugly one is nice because I am mostly ignored. I imagine being beautiful is difficult because these instances would occur more frequently and I already don't like them.
