I often think about Snow's conversation with Katniss in CF. He's warning threatening her- but also almost pleading with her. It never made sense that he would ever try to reason with her. He's giving her the chance to fix things. Something he's never done for any other Victor.

After reading Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, that scene reads as Snow trying to convince Katniss the way he couldn't convince Lucy Gray.

In his inner monologue at the end of BOSAS, Snow is trying to figure a way out (of "having" to kill Lucy Gray). He thinks if he could just get her to listen then she'll realize he's right and they can go back together.

But (in his mind) Lucy Gray wouldn't hear him out. He did what he thought he had to do. A choice that clearly fucking haunts him.

So 64 years later here is another Covey girl in front of him. Maybe this one will listen to him. Maybe this one will see reason and help him and herself. Maybe he can cage this Mockingjay.

Am I the only one who, for some reason, can't not constantly think about the memorials Katniss references in the epilogue?

"The arenas have been completely destroyed, the memorials built."

Is there a memorial for all the children who were murdered in the hunger games? All 1,725 of them? Did someone manage to dig up the names of all the past tributes? Can Haymitch go to the capitol and run his fingers over the L in Louella's name? Can Katniss look at Rue's name, engraved in something permanent?

Is there a memorial for all the rebel soldiers who died while fighting the capitol? Does Finnick's name reside right next to Prim's on a big glossy slab of marble or granite?

Can you imagine that fiddler in Mockingjay playing all the songs. They danced for hours. Every single song he could. Finally playing to his hearts content. Trying to remember each and every song for each and every member of the covey that died that was killed.

after the stuff in SOTR, I'm starting to question the other games, much like everyone else. I'm particularly interested in Annie, not just because of the flood being uncharacteristic of the Capitol. Idk the stuff that happened to Wiress seems very similar to Annie being reduced to "the crazy girl". Did they fucking torture this kid?? Because there is a REASON she was reaped in the very visibly rigged 75th Games

i think this scene epitomises katniss’s full feelings for peeta in the movies because she looks exactly like her mum when her dad died. especially afterwards when plutarch was explaining peeta’s hijacking, she looked dead inside and mirrored her mum completely, who throughout the series katniss refers to as “useless” after her dad died and she despises that her mum ended up how she did. but this scene shows how katniss is finally understanding her mum because she’s found someone she loves just as much maybe more than her mum loved her dad and that scares her because she viewed what her mum and dad had as “real love” and it ended with her mum struggling BADLY and she’s afraid that she’ll turn out like her now. after everything that happened to peeta she’s genuinely terrified she’ll be just like her mum - the one person she really didn’t want to turn out to be and that’s probably why she’s so scared of the idea of love and even more scared of the idea that she loves someone as much as her mum loved her dad as she know that their love was (in her eyes) the truest,realest form of love she had ever been exposed to so katniss would be inclined to think what her mum went through was the universal experience of what the after effects of love can do. and that’s what makes everlark so beautiful the way peeta opens up a new form of love for her she never knew existed TWICE.

I just had to get this out of my brain

people call lucy grey the spark, Haymitch the flint striker, and katniss the girl on fire, right? and maybe I'm missing something rn because I spent all day reading sotr front to back and it's 2am BUT. the spark part always stuck out to me. I didn't see how it had anything to do with her story because I don't recall there being anything like that in her narrative, even metaphorically speaking. however, Haymitch's flint striker (made by covey btw) is literally a songbird and a snake. depending on your interpretation of the tbosas title that could represent lucy grey alone or both her and snow (which is super interesting because it draws snow into it but I don't have the brain power to make good thoughts and that rn). so now I see it as: lucy grey is the mold/maker of the flint striker, which doesn't have as good a ring, but again, I'm tired and maybe that could just be refined better. the mold made the flint striker and the flint striker made the fire. PLEASE SEE MY VISION

I just had an evil idea. So you know how I’m the first quarter quell, the districts had to vote for who they sent into the arena? Well, I don’t know how the voting worked, whether it was “vote for who you want to live” or “vote for who you want to die”, but if it was the second option… well.

Imagine if the selected tributes voted for each other.

And then, over the course of the games, they grow to actually like each other.

I don’t know what district they’d be from, or even if either of them would win. It could be romantic or platonic, I don’t mind which, but isn’t that just so tragic? They hated each other enough to vote for the other, but now that they’ve finally realised the other isn’t so bad after all, they know that only one of them can live, and it’s entirely their fault (or at least, they’d think so).

Imagine the angst of going from “I hate you so much I want you dead”, to “I love you, and I want you to live”. Each of them fighting for the other one to win, even though they voted for them to lose.

Do you see my vision???

Just thinking about how in Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes Lucy Gray says, “the show’s not over until the mockingjay sings”

And how at the end of Mockingjay Katniss is mute until she talks to Snow and votes yes for another hunger games.

But it’s only after she kills Coin and is imprisoned in her old room in the training center that she starts to sing…

nothing can convince me this isn’t wrong.

prim wasn’t even an adult. she had her whole life ahead of her. the poll says tragic ending, not tragic life !!!

finnick and prim suffered the same fate, to an extent - they both tried to save people and ultimately died because of the regime they were fighting against. they were both victims and suffered pain while all they wanted was good.

but the tragedy of prim is that she was killed by a rebel bomb. the rebels, who she had grown up besides and who were fighting to give her generation a better future - heartlessly killing her. another consequence of war. it’s almost better to be killed by the villain and not your own side.

besides, finnick (as much as i love him) knew the dangers of the mission. he knew what he was fighting for, who he was protecting, what he was risking. he knew there was a good chance he would die for this. this undermines the tragedy of his death with heroism. but prim? she was helping the wounded. she was so young, trying to take care of those who needed her, despite the fact she also needed help or salvation. she had so much she could’ve brought to the world of medicine and human morality. she died as a consequence of the horrifying tactics the rebels had to deploy to win.

she was fighting for a side which thought of her as a mere number. a casualty. to be betrayed and killed by the same side you work and fight for meaninglessly is different to being killed by the side you fight against.

also, don’t even get me started on prim’s character being a tragic representation of the impact of the authoritarian government and dystopian system against the children of war. we’ve all heard the story before - everything katniss did was for her, and she ended up dying anyway. that in itself makes it entirely more tragic than any part of the series.

“But ooh, finnick left behind his wife and kids” oh shut up shut up shut up - just because prim didn’t have a family of her own doesn’t mean people didn’t need her or rely on her??? katniss and her mother, for example. all the wounded and injured she tended to daily. surely the fact that finnick had the chance to grow up and feel such love while prim was murdered before she ever had the chance made it worse?

the most tragic thing of all is the slaughter of the innocent. finnick was a soldier. prim supplied humanitarian aid.

Does anyone think about how the other covey members , went with Snow and Lucy Gray to the meadow , to the lake? How he was the man that helped their Lucy Gray survive.

Then one day they find out Lucy Gray is missing , but Snow is also gone. So maybe the ran away together?

Then they see Snow in the capital , rising to power. They watch as he becomes president. And they watch him take 2 of their districts children every year to kill them. And then they watch as their Lenore Dove is also killed because of Snow.

And then they’re finally able to travel again, but at the cost of what was their home for 75 years. And there in the new town , he plays his fiddle. And sees at last how Snow falls.

Say what you will about Sunrise on the Reaping (I myself loved it but I know some people found it a little lacking compared to the other books and I can understand why) but finishing the book has brought me back to this fandom and I'm so so glad and happy about it

I just rewatched The Hunger Games and Catching Fire and made my partner sit down and watch them for the first time and it was so much fun! Seeing him react to the iconic "if it weren't for the baby" and so many other scenes.. and being able to just tell him little bits of lore that didn't make it into the movies aaaaa

And then I realised how Catching Fire came out in 2013 and god damn how did time fly by so fast, I was a teen! It's been 12 years what do you meeeean. The fucking nostalgia of it all. And the freaking movie was such a good adaption, still holds up so well. And I can't believe it's been more than 12 years since I've been an obsessed teenager that loved these freakin books. And now I'm almost 30 and I still love this franchise so much and see so much value in it

never really deeped it but i guess ‘real or not real’ is a lot more than just peeta trying to untangle his thoughts/ his mind after his hijacking, maybe it was a representation of everlarks whole relationship. how after the first games katniss revealed that she was ‘pretending’ for the games and she didn’t really know if her feelings were actually there. so this would’ve probably meant that peeta viewed everything that happened in the first games as fake so therefore he was probably very wary about all of katniss’s actions throughout the victory tour and quarter quell so in a way him asking if things are real or not real is their way of confirming what pieces of their relationship the capitol forced them to have and what pieces were genuinely real to both of them throughout.

౨ৎ annett dawn marrow is the substitute accordionist for the covey's band in district 12, though she takes over fully for billy taupe later on. she is named after a ballad originating years before in ireland. her parents were executed by peacekeepers for rebelling against moving the covey, she doesn't remember them, but she does remember her father teaching her how to use a rifle, which she still carries to this day, illegally.

౨ৎ the name dawn, comes from her fiery locks of wild hair, which resemble the orange sky at sunrise. she is fierce, unadulterated, and protective of the younger members of the covey, since she serves as one of the oldest and almost a guardian of sorts for them. she sews their clothes and takes care of most of the chores, ie. laundry.

౨ৎ annet dawn has caused a few issues with peacekeepers in the past, a few fights one might say during rough bar nights. though, because the covey provide entertainment, most don't end up complaining when a woman beats them up. maude ivory likes to joke that she's like a corn snake, since only lucy gray seems to be able to calm her when she gets her temper going, along with the red hair.

౨ৎ she forms a connection with sejanus plinth when he comes to 12. originally, she distrusts both him and coriolanus, attributing this to the fact they are both peacekeepers and not trustworthy. though once she learns of sejanus's previous district origins, and heavy dislike of the games, she realizes he is able to be trusted.

౨ৎ her ballad goes as follows ;

“in dunlin glen where willows weep, a maiden sang her love to sleep. they called her annet, soft and fair, with foxfire eyes and copper hair. he vowed he'd come when spring was near— but seasons passed, he stayed unclear. she climbed the cliffs in gown of white and vanished with the fading light. now when the dusk is cold and stark, the wind still calls for annet lark.”

I've always had a special place for Mags in my heart as she reminds me of my grandmother and even more now (for many reasons, such as her speech impediment in Catching Fire that we realized it was probably a consequence of Capitol torture, my grandmother suffered the same consequence after years of domestic abuse and I can't explain how much resilience is in these women, the strength they have 😭)
