Intro
Hi!
I'm worldbuilding for a fantasy setting I'm developing to write a story in.
It started out as a writing exercise. It's now complicated enough that I've got at least 50 pages of general backstory, a timeline, a conlang for the lingua franca, and a lot of time wasted spent on developing this world.
This Tumblr is basically a means to post my notes for this, both to organize my thoughts and also in case some poor fool aspiring reader discovers this rabbit hole.
So before I get into the complicated bits, let me introduce myself. I'm Womgi. I'm 33 years old as of 2024, and I'm an Indian citizen from the city of Kochi in India. I work in a housing finance company, which for our American friends basically means I work with mortgages. In my free time I dabble in fanfiction, and poetry. And I daydream of retirement because I'm also a millennial waiting for the proverbial mushroom cloud to sweep over me and put me out of my misery. English is actually my second language, my first being Malayalam, and my third being Hindi. I'm fluent in English and Malayalam, passable in Hindi, and I can understand Tamil if I squint.
Whit that done, let's move on to the actual setting!
So, short backstory time!
We have our basic fantasy magic world with people, magic and nations. Magic has existed basically forever, but actually using it was very difficult. Emphasis on was.
And back when magic was rarer than common sense, that's where your mages came in, people with enough magic to use magic in a meaningful manner, aka people who can cast at least some spells.
And then you have the real heavy hitters, the og legends in a time of sword and spear, the battle mages, who were basically able to use magic on themselves and become tiny unstoppable murder machines. Just saying, nothing says I win more than being strong, nigh invulnerable and super fast for a while. Especially when your opponents consider the spear and shield the height of military power.
The great nations of Trakia mostly came about due to these individuals, doing a lot of heavy lifting in "uniting" large areas into large nations. Thus you go from hundreds of small tribal territories to actual kingdoms and small empires, nations which have vast land, people and resources.
And the way these nations stayed united is that they figured out non mage magics, stuff that you could train the average guy to do. Basically, a mage might be able to light up a hand with their own magic. A magician would study and be able to do actually useful stuff, like a magic telegram, or repairing a house. But the point is, once you have communication in place, even if it is magic telegrams, you start to be able to consolidate in a way that you couldn't before the use of such magic. Communication allows for coordination, and homogenization, keeping a country together as opposed to having distant regions that will eventually feel estranged and eventually get ideas....like becoming independent. No, being united is all about a collective "us" that can then be used as an excuse to look down upon "them"
This is what I'd like to call the pre isekai period. When things were....okay-ish. sure you had your wars and fighting, but the world was nominally at peace, and most people didnt really have to worry about anything more than themselves and their immediate surroundings. Politics was something for rulers to worry about. Everyone was happy!
But everything changed when the fire nation attacked!
And then things....changed.

Independence Day
Today is India's Independence Day, so I thought I'd take a bit to gush about my country.
Warning, I'm not taking much time to compose this. It's unscripted.
India is among the ancients of ancient civilization, with some ruins of the famous Indus Valley dating back farther than 5000 BC. Evidence exists of its trade with faraway Egypt And Mesopotamia, and although their writing still hasn't been deciphered (and may never be) some of its pantheon (a pastoral version of Shiva) as well as elements such as a ritual fire pit (yajna kund) show that parts of its old old culture were assimilated into it's successor-- the Vedic culture, which exists to this day.
But the Indus Valley is only one part of ancient India.
There are cities submerged under the sea in South India, drowned when water levels rose. These settlements are also at least as old as the Indus Valley, and South India itself has also boasted a long and colorful culture, which at once is similar to that in North India, yet different too. For instance, there are a different family of languages in South India, which might be indigenous to India: Tamil (probably the oldest language in India, and maybe the oldest still-spoken language of the civilized world), Kannada, Telugu, and Malayalam, to name a few. Their ancient architecture was distinct, with tall tiered roofs adorned with painted statues and reliefs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
South Indian people also look very different from North Indian people. Darker of skin, thick and curly hair more aboriginal in
And there is a third ethnic group of Indians too, a group one does not quite associate with India: the Naga peoples of Northeastern India. In physical appearance as well as cultural, traditional, and aesthetic, they look Tibetan, or even Chinese
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Naga are known more for their intricate weaving, jewelry, and distinctive art than temples and monuments like South and Central India, but that doesn’t make them any less an integral part of Indian heritage!
I’ve saved the most famous for last: the Empire-builders of Central India, called “Indo-Aryans” (problematic much?) by some scholars to this day. Normally when someone says “Indian”, they are closest to the image that pops up in most minds.
The basic theory of the Indo-Aryan Migration is sound (though hotly contested in India, probably because of the ‘Aryan’ bit, something which even Hitler was known to have endorsed); it proposes an Indo-Iranian lineage which migrated in from—you guessed it!—Iran during the Bronze Age Collapse. Our languages certainly do share a root with Iranian cultures, though some argue that the migration happened from India, not to. There are other counter theories to the Migration theory too, but that’s a rabbit hole I’d rather not crawl into.
What I can say for certain is that some of the most famous Emperors of India originate here, including Ashoka the Great, who was possibly the biggest factor in the spread of Buddhism.
youtube
And while Dravidian peoples also have a rich tradition of poetry and literature, the most iconic of Indian texts come from Central India: the Vedas—are our socio-religious texts, and Ramayana and Mahabharata—our great epics.
Science and Math were not too shabby in india either, though that’s perhaps too vast a discussion for anyone but a better read person to dive into.
Indian Religion is largely Hinduism, though Christianity, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and others also exist here. As with the science bit, I think the specifics are too much to talk about without a few months of research first.
India was a center of trade of the world for millennia, exporting spices, incense, textiles, precious stones, herbs, and exotic animals. Not to mention skill. Indeed, Carthage once imported Indian elephant handlers, and used their expertise to build their own army of elephants, which would later be used famously by Hannibal Barca. All this in exchange for gold and silver, so much that Pliny the Elder once complained about it
India, China and the Arabian peninsula take one hundred million sesterces from our empire per annum at a conservative estimate: that is what our luxuries and women cost us. For what fraction of these imports is intended for sacrifices to the gods or the spirits of the dead?
— Pliny, Historia Naturae 12.41.84.
Small wonder then, that India grew wealthy over the centuries; and that this wealth made it a prize for invaders and colonizers. Most famous of which would be the British Raj.
Much of India’s wealth and prestige was lost under colonial rule, and misrule by East India Companies and later the British Empire saw a rich land slowly sucked dry. Small wonder that India was fighting for its independence since 1857. Didn’t happen until much later; India was a colony during both World Wars, sending people and materials. But once the Second War ended even Britain had lost the power to hold on to India and in 1947, they granted us independence. Grudgingly. On the way out they generously forgave their own massive debt to us, divided the country into India and Pakistan, and left with a wink. The India then stood on a precarious position, but since then we have recovered well. India is again home to a major economy today, and a hub for science and technology; most recent accomplishments include landing a craft on Mars, and a failed probe to the moon.
Today we are celebrating our 74th Independence day, and despite a shitty 2020, things aren’t looking too gloomy. Unless this year has some even more painful surprises in store for us yet, I think our nation will continue to grow and change.

Pookkalavum, pooviliyum, onakkodiyum, onasadhyayumayi oru onam koodi~ “ONAM “HAS COME !
Tumblr media
Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of the Indian state of Kerala. Onam is the most revered ancient festival of Kerala. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by people of all communities.  It is also symbolic of King Mahabali’s annual home-coming as well as celebrates the Vaman avatar of Lord Vishnu. This ten day long festival brings in the best of festive spirit among the local people there and is celebrated with much splendor. This year the festival is being presently celebrated in kerala from 25th august,2017 to 6th september,2017. ”Thiruvonam”- The main festival day will be celebrated on 4th septemeber.
Tumblr media
Onam is celebrated in the beginning of the month of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam Calendar (Kollavarsham). This corresponds with the month of August-September according to Gregorian Calendar. The Festival  of Onam lasts from four to ten days. First day, ‘Atham’ and tenth day,’ Thiruonam’ are most important of all.
HISTORY & the esscence of the festival ~
The word Onam is believed to have been originated from the Sanskrit word Shravanam which in Sanskrit refers to one of the 27 Nakshatars or constellations. Thiru in South India is used for anything associated with the Lord Vishnu and Thiruvonam is believed to be the Nakshatra of Lord Vishnu who pressed the great King Mahabali to the underworld with his foot.  It is believed that Onam celebrations started during the Sangam Period. Record of celebrations can be found from the time of Kulasekhara Perumals (800 AD). At that time Onam celebrations continued for a month.
Tumblr media
Onam carnival continues for ten days, starting from the day of Atham and culminating on Thiru Onam. Atham and Thiru Onam are the most important days for Onam festivities. The day of Atham is decided by the position of stars. Onam festival commences from lunar asterism (a cluster of stars smaller than a constellation) Atham (Hastha) that appears ten days before asterism Onam or Thiru Onam. Atham is regarded as auspicious and holy day by people of Kerala. Thiru Onam corresponds to the Shravan day in the month of August or September, hence it is also called Sravanotsavam. At this time sun is in the Zodiac sign of Leo (Simha rasi), which happens to be the sun's house as well.
THE MAIN FESTIVAL DAY  : THIRUVONAM
Tumblr media
The biggest and the most happening day in the carnival of Onam is “Thiruvonam”. Festivities begin as early as 4 am. People clean up their house, take early bath, wear new clothes and perform elaborate prayers to seek divine blessings. A massive and most exquisite pookalam is prepared on this day to welcome the spirit of King Maveli. Highpoint of the day is the enormous lunch called Onasadya. People of Kerala are extremely passionate about this. Even if they cannot easily afford, they will anyhow prepare the meal inclusive of all the 11-13 prescribed dishes. This has lead to the saying in Malayalam, "Kanam Vittu Onam Unnanam" which means, "We should have the Thiruonam lunch even if we have to sell all our properties".
Tumblr media
Thiruvonam Nakshathram Begins = 09:37 on 3/Sep/2017 Thiruvonam Nakshathram Ends = 11:18 on 4/Sep/2017
The Legend Behind ~
Onam is celebrated to welcome the king back to the land that he ruled which is the present-day Kerala. According to legend, during the reign of Mahabali, Kerala experienced a time of prosperity and happiness and the king was revered by all his subjects. However, Mahabali was an egoist and fought with the Devas to showcase his supremacy. He defeated them and conquered their region and became lord of the two worlds. In order to celebrate his victory he decided to perform a yajna and proclaimed that whoever comes to him to ask for anything, they would be gratified. The Devas asked Lord Vishnu to wage war on Mahabali and get their kingdom back but he refused as Mahabali was his devotee. However, he thought of testing him, so he took avatar as a dwarf (Vamana avatar) and asked Mahabali for three paces of land. Mahabali agreed thinking the dwarf will not be able to ask a lot. But Lord Vishnu in the Vamana avatar increased his size and with two paces covered the entire kingdom of Mahabali, for the third pace Mahabali offered him his head. The God granted him a boon that he could visit his kingdom and people once a year and this visit is celebrated as Onam.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is this visit of Mahabali that is celebrated as Onam every year. People make all efforts to celebrate the festival in a grand way and impress upon their dear King that they are happy and wish him well.
CELEBRATIONS GALORE ~
Popularity and presentation of rich culture of the state during the carnival made Onam the State Festival of Kerala in 1961. Elaborate feasts, folk songs, elegant dances, energetic games, elephants, boats and flowers all are a part of the dynamic festival called Onam. Government of India has taken due notice of this vibrant and colorful festival. It promotes Onam internationally in a big way and celebrates 'Tourist Week' for Kerala during Onam celebrations. Thousands of domestic and foreign tourists visit Kerala to be a part of Onam.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As it is a harvest season, the beautiful state of Kerala can be seen in its magnificent best. Weather is pleasantly sunny and warm calling for mirth and celebrations. Fields look brilliant as they glow with golden paddy grains. It is also the boom time of fruits and flowers. The Best Movies on Amazon Prime Video in India
Tumblr media
Amazon Prime Video's movie acquisitions might not have the same international depth as Netflix, but it's undoubtedly stronger and richer in its local variety, with its titles spanning the Tamil, Telugu, and the Malayalam world of filmmaking in addition to Bollywood. And that's matched with a powerful collection of American imports, to deliver a collection that can more than stand its ground against the world's biggest streaming service. It lacks with its original efforts — a few are present below, for what it's worth — but it's also a lot more affordable at Rs. 999 per year, versus Netflix's Rs. 650 a month. To pick the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, we relied on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and IMDb ratings to create a shortlist. The last of them was preferred for Indian films given the shortfalls of reviews aggregators in that department. Additionally, we used our own editorial judgement to add or remove a few. This list will be updated once every few months if there are any worthy additions or if some movies are removed from the service, so bookmark this page and keep checking in. Here are the best films currently available on Amazon Prime Video in India, sorted alphabetically. 12 Years a Slave (2013) Duped into slavery on the account of a job, Steve McQueen's adaptation of a free New York black man's (Chiwetel Ejiofor) 19th-century memoir is an incredible true story, and an important watch. 3 Idiots (2009) In this satire of the Indian education system's social pressures, two friends recount their college days and how their third long-lost musketeer (Aamir Khan) inspired them to think creatively and independently in a heavily-conformist world. Co-written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who stands accused in the #MeToo movement. Agantuk (1991) In Satyajit Ray's last film, a mysterious and world-weary explorer returns to India after 35 years to see his only surviving relative, his niece, but has trouble convincing the family who he claims to be. Aladdin (1992) Disney puts its animation flavour onto the famous folk tale of a street urchin who disguises himself as a wealthy prince after finding a genie in a magic lamp, in an attempt to impress the Sultan's daughter. Amal (2007) After a poor Delhi auto-rickshaw driver (Rupinder Nagra) is named as the sole inheritor by a local billionaire (Naseeruddin Shah) just before his death, he must decide whether to keep it. American Beauty (1999) A depressed advertising executive (Kevin Spacey) in the midst of a midlife crisis falls for his teenage daughter's best friend, in Sam Mendes' satire of American middle-class that ultimately won five Oscars including Best Picture. Anand (1971) Rajesh Khanna stars as the eponymous happy-go-lucky man, who doesn't let his diagnosis of a rare form of cancer get in the way of enjoying what's in front of him. Told from the viewpoint of his doctor friend (Amitabh Bachchan). Hrishikesh Mukherjee directs. Anbe Sivam (2003) Kamal Haasan and R. Madhavan star in this Tamil cult film, in which the two are stranded over a thousand kilometres from home after heavy rain cancels all flights and strike up an unlikely friendship on their way back. Haasan also wrote the script. Andaz Apna Apna (1994) Two slackers (Aamir Khan and Salman Khan) who belong to middle-class families vie for the affections of an heiress, and inadvertently become her protectors from a local gangster in Rajkumar Santoshi's cult comedy favourite.

Ankhon Dekhi (2014) After an eye-opening experience involving his daughter's marriage, a man in his late 50s (Sanjay Mishra) resolves that he won't believe anything he can't see, which naturally leads to some dramatic complications. Aruvi (2016) A social satire from a debutante writer-director, which follows an eponymous young woman (Aditi Balan), who going through a bout of existential crisis, decides to shine a light on the consumerist and misogynistic behaviours in her society. Back to the Future (1985) Not many films come close to the worldwide appeal and legacy left by this sci-fi entry featuring the iconic DeLorean that Michael J. Fox's character uses to (accidentally) time travel to when his parents were his age. Strange then that it didn't get the green light for years. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) The heavily controversial Salman Khan stars as a devout Hindu Brahmin and an ardent devotee of Hanuman, who embarks on a journey to reunite a mute six-year-old Muslim girl, lost in India, with her parents in Pakistan. Kareena Kapoor co-stars. Salman is a convicted poacher, out on bail, and accused of culpable homicide, pending appeal. A Beautiful Mind (2001) The life of John Nash, a brilliant but asocial mathematician, from his spiral into paranoid schizophrenia and working on a secret project he made up, to regaining control over his life and becoming a Nobel Laureate. The Big Sick (2017) Kumail Nanjiani stars as himself in this rom-com loosely based on his romance with his wife, in which an aspiring comedian connects with his girlfriend's parents after she falls into a mysterious coma. Blood Diamond (2006) Set during the Sierra Leone Civil War at the turn of the century, an arms smuggler (Leonardo DiCaprio) promises to help a fisherman (Djimon Hounsou) find his family in exchange for a priceless diamond the latter found in a river. Bombay (1995) Set during the 1992–93 Bombay riots, writer-director Mani Ratnam offers a look at the communal tensions that cause a strain on the relationship between a Muslim woman (Manisha Koirala) and a Hindu man (Arvind Swamy). The Bourne trilogy (2002–07) Technically not a trilogy, but the first three chapters — Identity, Supremacy, and Ultimatum — starring Matt Damon in the lead as the titular CIA assassin suffering from amnesia were so good that they changed the longest-running spy franchise of all-time: James Bond. Brazil (1985) Terry Gilliam blends social satire with his signature visual inventiveness in this dystopian sci-fi set in a retro-future world, which follows a lowly clerk who becomes an enemy of the state after trying to correct an administrative error.

Known as “the best Hitchcock movie that Hitchcock never made”. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) Frequent collaborators Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are behind this ‘remake' of the 1971 original based on Roald Dahl's 1964 book, in which the title character — a young boy (Freddie Highmore) — wins a tour of an imaginative chocolatier's chocolate factory with four other kids. Chhoti Si Baat (1976) This remake of the 1960 British film School for Scoundrels transports the story to then-Bombay, where a meek young man (Amol Palekar) turns to life-coach Colonel (Ashok Kumar) to battle a suave, bold man for the affections of a woman. Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, and Hema Malini cameo as themselves. Basu Chatterjee directs. Chupke Chupke (1975) Hrishikesh Mukherjee's remake of the Bengali film Chhadmabeshi, in which a newly-wedded husband (Dharmendra) decides to play pranks on his wife's (Sharmila Tagore) supposedly smart brother-in-law, released in the same year as Sholay. Jeffrey Tambor, who stars, stands accused in the #MeToo movement. Dil Chahta Hai (2001) Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut about three inseparable childhood friends whose wildly different approach to relationships creates a strain on their friendship remains a cult favourite. Forushande (2016) Oscar-winner Asghar Farhadi uses Arthur Miller's play “Death of a Salesman” as his story within a story, to depict thematic parallels with the deteriorating relationship of an Iranian couple after an assault on the wife. The husband wants to find out who the attacker is against her wishes, while she deals with post-trauma stress. Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) Inspired by the 2008 Tamil-language film Subramaniapuram, Anurag Kashyap concocts a gangster epic that blends politics, vengeance, and romance as it looks at the power struggles between three crime families in and around the Jharkhand city of Dhanbad, the epicentre of the coal mafia. Kerala UK based writer Karoor Soman novel
“The book as we know is not dead yet. As reading habits have changed, it is appearing on myriad digital platforms like blogs,” says novelist Jaishree Misra. “Hence the future is riddled with post modern angst. The new writers should brace themselves to take on new challenges,” she told a group of young English students attending a seminar on ‘post modern riddles for before Indo-Anglian writers’ at the Institute of English, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram.
Releasing London-based Karoor Soman’s debut English novel ‘Malabar Aflame’ at the function organized by the Centre for Cultural Studies of the University, Ms Misra said that many parts of the book reflected what she knew of London and the United Kingdom as a resident as well as guest to book fairs like the Daily Telegraph Hay-on-Wye Festival.
“The Number 12 London Double Decker shown on the cover of the book is also very familiar as I used to travel by it while studying in the University of London,” recalled Jaishree. (Since then and after eight novels, she has come to settle down at the ocean front in the Kerala capital at her new home ‘Ocean Spray).Antony the protagonist of the novel who reaches London at the beginning of the post War London and the anti-hero Ali Haji are living legends of the London that I knew. The challenges they face over the years up to the current third generation is as vivid as life in East Ham or Kings Cross.
A writer with deep roots in Kerala, Jaishree is a grand niece of Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai. She feels that but for English that she choose for self expression, she would not have come up for approbation outside Kerala and outside India. In spite of regional languages remaining vibrant, it is an international language like English that nurtures us as a writer of known caliber. Her interactions with the outside world have been a great influence on her, she confessed. She mentioned KR Meera’s Malayalam novel ‘Aarachar’ reaching 50,000 copies especially after being translated into English.
Dr. Jancy James, former two-times vice chancellor of MG University, Kottayam and the first vice chancellor of the Central University of Kerala, Kasargod, who moderated the seminar, said that but for her accidental foray into the world of administration, she would have remained a teacher and a writer, something that she still cherishes. It is not all lost because her son, who is a technocrat, has become a writer (with his second book on its way out) and her daughter, a PhD in Law, is a voracious reader.
“Think aloud to find if you have anything to say. If you find that you have, then only take up the pen,” advised C. Balagopal, an IAS-turned businessman who has lately become a successful writer. His first book ‘On a Clear Day, You can see India’, published by Harper Collins is a n anecdotic recall of his days as a young IAS trainee in Manipur. His second book on his experiences as Sub Collector in Kollam is coming out soon.

Ranam Detroit Crossing Movie Review: Prithviraj-Rahman deliver powerful performances in this gangster saga
After Mumbai Police, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Rahman are back together in this thriller! Nirmal Sahadev's directorial debut 'Ranam', starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Rahman, Isha Talwar and Nandu, is an ambitious, powerful and disturbing thriller. It revolves around an unusual theme - Detroit's underworld. [READ: Mumbai Police Movie Review]
The narrative opens up with gripping questions.
What does Detroit mean anymore to the world?
What hopes and dreams can immigrants have in a city where drug wars are a daily affair and violence is a way of life?
Right from the beginning of the film, the helplessness of Indian immigrants is evident, when Prithviraj's voice over brims with sombre tones about the lost glory of Detroit. You are unknowingly pulled into the gloom and despair the city's dark images evoke.
Ranam Story
'Aadhi' (starring Prithviraj) is Detroit's best known getaway driving champion and he deals with deadly party drugs. I am not entirely thrilled with the sketchy characterisation of 'Aadhi'. We know nothing of his past, we are given hints of a tough guy's vulnerable side through the recurring nightmares he suffers. Aadhi is also cast in the mould of a dangerous Robin Hood, who is doing the bad deed for others such as his uncle Bhaskar (starring Nandhu) but he intends to stop one day. Aadhi almost succeeded walking out of the 'big boss' Damodar's den till his cousin lands up in trouble and he finds himself in bigger trouble.
Despite the sketchy characterisation, Prithviraj Sukumaran is at his impressive best as a 'drug dealer'.
Damodar (starring Rahman) is the villain of this movie. Rahman, as Damodar, is powerful, disturbing and impressive. In the scenes with Aadhi, 'Damodar' not only stands his ground but lingers on after every scene. His Tamil diction is flawless. The dialogue delivery has the finesse and sophistication of a hero.
A particular scene that the seasoned actor pulls off with admirable finesse is where he visits Seema to deliver a subtle threat. He pulls it off with masterful sophistication.
In this movie, Isha Talwar's portrayal of 'Seema' came as a real surprise. Unlike 'Thattathin Marayathu' and 'Bangalore Days', Isha Talwar has a meaningfully layered role in this narrative.
You can view the multi-faceted personality of Seema - as a wife, a dancer, an activist fighting domestic abuse and other women related issues and more importantly, as the strong-and-vulnerable 'hot' mother of a rebellious teenager.
Her poise, strength and grace with which she held up the tattered life of a stricken mother is brilliant.
A minor disappointment remains that some of the choices 'Seema' later makes lack consistency with the 'activist' we are shown at the beginning of the movie.
Here are some aspects of the movie that disappointed me as a viewer:
First, the dialogues are weak. Most characters seem to speak almost in the same monosyllables, unlike the different people belonging to different cultures whom they represent to be living in the same city.
Second, their back story is completely missing from the narrative. Third, everything is predictable except the tragedy involving Seema's daughter.
Fourth, most dialogues in the movie are in English and Tamil. Sometimes I had to remind myself that I am watching a Malayalam movie. Of course, I understand that the setting is Detroit. However, I would have liked to see more elements of the Malayali identity woven into the narrative.
Fifth, some racial stereotyping could have been avoided. For instance, the popular perception of African Americans misbehaving with women is played up. The reference to 'blood' was unnecessary and over-the-top.
The jibe referring to 'Gulf Malayalis' was not lost on me but perhaps the timing was misplaced, so was the tone in which it was delivered.
Last but not the least, I am not thrilled when watching scenes after scenes involving blood-curdling violence and dark, brooding spaces that seem to be larger than reality.
After a point, the lighting begins to hurt the performances of the actors and weakens the visual impact. I understand that this lighting may have been an innovation to add to the mood and theme of Detroit. However, a finer balance may have been required. For instance, the climax of the film could have had a more powerful impact if the lighting had been a little less 'red'.
Some solid performances are worth watching such as Nandhu as 'Bhaskar', Matthew Arun as 'Aju' and Ashwin Kumar as 'Selvan'. Celine Joseph as 'Deepika' is outstanding.
Celine Joseph is impressive, stands on firm ground with Prithviraj as 'Aadhi' and clearly, she got into the very skin of the character she portrayed. 'Deepika' is definitely the boldest Malayali teenager that I have seen on screen.
Planning to watch Detroit spring to life in Prithviraj-Rahman thriller 'Ranam'? Do share your review in the comments section below.

Woman imprisoned for converting to Islam tells Indian Supreme Court: “I want freedom”
WTF! Religious fascism and sexism alive and well in India sanctified in courts! "In 2016, Hadiya, a 24-year old woman from a Hindu household who was pursuing training in homeopathic medicine, converted to Islam. Several months later, she married the man of her choice, Shafin Jahan, a Muslim from her home state of Kerala. Hearing news of his daughter’s conversation and subsequent marriage, Hadiya’s father filed a police case alleging his daughter had been the victim of “love jihad.” Six months ago, the Kerala High Court ruled in favor of Hadiya’s father, declared her consensual marriage null and void, and placed Hadiya — an adult woman — in the custody of her father. Hadiya had been held against her will at her father’s house since May until this past Monday, when the Indian Supreme Court, after finally allowing her to speak, ruled that she could return to her medical college — under the condition that the college’s dean be appointed her “local guardian.”"
On Monday this week, a young Muslim woman faced the Indian Supreme Court, finally allowed to speak after being imprisoned for converting to Islam and marrying a man of her choice. After months of petitions, news coverage, and speeches from everyone but her, she said laid out her demand clearly: “I want freedom.”
In 2016, Hadiya, a 24-year old woman from a Hindu household who was pursuing training in homeopathic medicine, converted to Islam.
Hadiya had been held against her will at her father’s house since May until this past Monday, when the Indian Supreme Court, after finally allowing her to speak, ruled that she could return to her medical college — under the condition that the college’s dean be appointed her “local guardian.”
Feminists across India have been protesting the court’s treatment of Hadiya, and the case has inspired serious debate about women’s autonomy, state persecution of Muslims, and the politics of conversion in contemporary India. I’ve been covering Hadiya’s story here at Feministing in the context of these debates, but it’s not just an Indian controversy. Hadiya’s story sheds light on issues — state regulation of women’s bodies, Islamophobia, and racism — important to us in the United States as we continue to protest American state violence against Muslims worldwide.
“Love Jihad”
As the Hindu right has ascended in India, so have allegations of “love Jihad.” The panic over this non-existent, alleged conspiracy whereby Muslim men seduce and then “forcibly convert” Hindu women, has spread from right-wing propaganda to state investigations policing interfaith marriages between Hindu women and Muslim men. Hadiya’s case has been taken up by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under an anti-terrorism framework.
The stereotype of Muslim men as sexually violent threats to the “purity” of Hindu women has a long history of India and is pronounced in the rhetoric of the Indian right. The Indian government has also used stereotypes about the aggression of Muslim men to deny the agency of Muslim women. For example, while the right-wing government cynically championed the recent Indian Supreme Court verdict against triple talaq (a form of instant divorce previously allowed to Muslim men under Indian law), it was actually Muslim women’s collective power which had brought about the decision.
As numerous feminists have pointed out, the painful irony of the Hindu right’s supposed championing of Muslim women is that these are the very politicians and organizations responsible for horrifying, and deeply misogynist, anti-Muslim threats and violence. The ruling party in India, the right-wing BJP, is known for using anti-Muslim hate speech, including one BJP party worker’s grotesque threats that Muslim women’s bodies should be disinterred and raped.
This is sadly not an empty threat, considering the widespread sexualized atrocities committed against Muslim women in the 2002 Gujarat riots, a series of brutal anti-Muslim attacks in which current Prime Minister Narendra Modi was likely complicit. A recent sting operation revealed right-wing Hindu leaders bragging on tape about spreading the myth of love Jihad and using false allegations of rape to terrorize Muslim communities and violate women’s autonomy.
From Family to Court
While all people over the age of 18 are legal adults under the Indian constitution, the legal system has often been a tool of maintaining patriarchal control.
Numerous Indian feminists have critiqued the social conception that a woman is the ward of her father, who passes her to a husband of the family’s choice. Local caste governing bodies, known as khap panchayats, are often criticized for upholding patriarchal control and limiting women’s constitutionally-entitled right to autonomous citizenship. But the legal system, too, is complicit, with recent decisions about rape reinforcing the idea that women cannot be raped by their husbands or deserve rape for pushing socially-defined boundaries. Furthermore, regulations of women’s autonomy and mobility are highly tied to religion and caste, with most honor killings actually being a murderous response to intercaste unions.
In Hadiya’s case, the Kerala High Court violated Hadiya’s rights by citing the”Indian tradition” of patriarchal family control, rather than abiding by the Indian tradition of robust constitutional protections for women and minorities.
The Supreme Court’s decision to allow Hadiya to return to her college is heartening. Still, it’s disturbing that the Court even allowed Hadiya to be imprisoned by her father in the first place; that it’s taking seriously allegations of “mental kidnapping” and “indoctrination” rather than accepting that an adult woman has the right to choose her religion; and that it took months for Hadiya’s voice to even be heard in court.
Most disturbing of all is the fact that, even after returning to her college, Hadiya may still not be permitted to meet her husband. The Supreme Court has placed her under the guardianship of the principal of her college, who has stated to the media that he has the power to decide who she meets — and he is unlikely to permit her to meet her husband. Meanwhile, the college’s housing, like many such dorms for women across India, has draconian rules, including mandatory 10:45pm lights out and only 1 hour daily access to cell phones.
As feminist group Pinjra Tod (“Break the Cages”) writes, this is one more example of how women’s educational institutions in India often reinforce patriarchal authority by severely restricting women’s mobility.
“I need the freedom to meet the person I love,” Hadiya said about the restrictive hostel rules. “I’m asking for my fundamental rights.”
“I want to remain true to my faith”
For many sitting reading about Hadiya’s case in the United States, it’s easy to dismiss the proceedings as the distant happenings of a “Third World” country where women’s rights aren’t as “developed” as in the United States. This, of course, is baloney. The regulation of women’s bodies is a fundamental form of political control across contexts, apparent too in American Islamophobia.
Appeals to white women’s supposed “purity” has long been a tactic of American racism. We see it in the historical use of alleged sexual sleights against white women as justifications for the lynching of black men. Most recently, we saw it in Dylann Roof’s use of white femininity to justify his horrific, racist 2015 murders.
We can see a similar sexualized racism against Muslim men today, as politicians appeal to sensationalized tales of sexual violence to fuel Islamophobic and anti-immigrant sentiment. And of course, anyone who witnessed the American Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is familiar with the racist and infantilizing claim (sometimes perpetuated by feminists) that Muslim women need the American government to save them. Just as right-wing Hindu groups campaign as champions of Muslim women while also sponsoring violence against them, the American government has historically “championed” Muslim women’s rights—while enabling abuse of them at home and dropping bombs on them abroad.
In the war for cultural supremacy, women’s bodies are made into battlefields. That’s why it’s even more important to listen when women like Hadiya, whom an entire state machinery has attempted to silence, speak.  Try as her father might to prevent Hadiya from speaking in open court on Tuesday, and despite the uncertainty of her future, Hadiya’s voice rang clear.
“I have endured mental harassment and been in unlawful custody for 11 months. I want to go back to my college and continue my education…I want to remain true to my faith, ” she told the court in Malayalam, translated by a lawyer. “I want freedom.”

Beyond Bollywood: where India’s biggest movie hits really come from
The global success of fantasy epic Baahubali 2: The Conclusion underscores the power of the countrys billion-dollar regional film industry
The global success of SS Rajamoulis fantasy epic sequel Baahubali 2: The Conclusion has once again brought Indian cinema to the attention of the world. Its forerunner, the $31m-budgeted Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), grossed $100m worldwide but caused little more than a ripple outside India. Within the country, it made waves because the film, made in the south Indian Telugu and Tamil languages, saw the Hindi-dubbed version alone gross more than $20m.
It is a common misconception that the Hindi-language, Mumbai-based film industry known as Bollywood is Indias national cinema. The numbers tell a different story. India produces an astonishing 1,900 films a year on average, of which Hindi-language Bollywood accounts for about 340. The bulk of the rest comes from the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi and Gujarati languages. Domestic box office has remained stagnant at about $1.5bn and, while Bollywood might produce more films (Tamil had 291, Telugu 275, and Kannada 204 films in 2016), it contributes just a third of the box office gross. In short, Bollywood has the visibility, but not the profits, with the under-performers far outweighing the hits.
In this context, the numbers racked up by the regional Baahubali 2 budgeted at $39m, made in Telugu and Tamil, with Hindi and Malayalam dubbed versions are astonishing by Indian standards. The film opened on 28 April and grossed $194m in 13 days, making it the highest Indian grosser of all time and putting it on track to become the first Indian film to gross $200m. It easily outperformed the $123m collected by PK (2014), starring Bollywood icon Aamir Khan.
Baahubali 2 consolidated this performance by delivering an extraordinary result in the US, opening in third position at the box office, above The Circle starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson. With $17m and counting, it is the highest grossing Indian film of all time in North America.
Baahubali 2 has the perfect blend of action, emotion and all the right ingredients that a moviegoer wants, says Soma Kancherla, of the films US distributors Great India Films. Baahubali 1s success and the curiosity factor had created a huge hype. The conclusion had lived up to the expectations.
Female empowerment saga Parched, directed by Leena Yadav. Photograph: Brisbane Asia and Pacific Film Festival
Has the film broken out beyond Indian diaspora audiences to a broader audience? Yes, says Kancherla. We factored some of that into our promotion and targeted non-Indians, and to some extent it worked. We have seen many Americans in the theatres who watched and appreciated the film.
The film also collected $2.3m across 66 Imax screens around the world in its opening weekend. This included $1.8m from 45 Imax locations in North America, making it the highest ever opening in the format for a foreign language film.
In the UK, rather than the consolidated figure of the various versions charting as in North America, fragmented versions were listed, with the Hindi version bowing in sixth position, the Tamil one in ninth and the Malayalam and Telugu versions lower in the Top 20.
Creating and maintaining anticipation for the larger-than-life saga of warring cousins and fiery queens was a carefully calibrated task for producer Shobu Yarlagaddaof Arka Mediaworks, the company behind the films. As we started preproduction on the film, we knew that for the kind of efforts we were planning to put into the project, financial and otherwise, it would be sad if we didnt at least attempt to go beyond our regional strongholds, says Yarlagadda.
Global hit Dangal has taken $143m worldwide. Photograph: Disney
Getting a wide release in the south Indian language markets of Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam was simple enough as director Rajamouli is a brand name there, with hits such as Eega and Magadheera behind him. For north India and the international markets, Arka promoted the project on social media platforms, as well as attending comic-cons and university festivals.
The so-called traditional market for Indian films is a block of 50 territories with the biggest being the US, the UAE, the UK, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indias south Asian neighbours, Australia and New Zealand, and North Africa, with some pockets in France, Germany and Switzerland. Elsewhere, Indian films were popular in Russia and China in the 1950s, particularly actor/film-maker Raj Kapoors blockbuster Awara, while dancing action star Mithun Chakraborty enjoyed fame there with his 1982 film Disco Dancer. However, of late, Indian studio majors have been striking out into non-traditional territories with dubbed or subtitled versions of films: Ki & Ka was released in territories as diverse as Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe and Gibraltar; Bajrangi Bhaijaan in Morocco, Tunisia and Poland; and Mary Kom in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Indian producers have utilised every trick in the book to reach overseas audiences. Arka hired Franois Da Silva, former artistic director of Cannes directors fortnight, to sell and market the film internationally. Non-Indian behind-the-camera talent is increasingly common. Leena Yadavs female empowerment saga Parched, in Hindi, boasts Titanic cinematographer Russell Carpenter and The Descendants editor Kevin Tent.
Accessible English-language titles are also on the rise. Pan Nalins Angry Indian Goddesses, billed as Indias first female buddy movie, sold to 61 territories internationally. Nalin says: Based on my past movies and gaining some experience with international distribution one thing I realised is that its not enough to just have a great movie. We also need a great title which is universally appealing. Titling it in English has paid off. Across the world, the moment we utter or read Angry Indian Goddesses it puts a smile on faces.
All the major Hollywood films are released in English and in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil dubs, demonstrating that India loves global tentpoles, provided they speak in their own tongues. (Appropriately, the highest grossing Hollywood film in India is the India-set The Jungle Book, which roared to $28m in 2016.) Nevertheless, the dominance being enjoyed by Baahubali 2 could be under threat. Wrestling drama Dangal has taken $143m at the global box office, while fans of Baahubalis spectacle will be waiting for the big-budget adaptations of epic story cycles The Ramayana and The Mahabharata, which are in the works. Its fair to say that, with Hollywood accounting for just 10% of the local box office, the Indian film industry continues to enjoy rude good health.
