The trope tier list thing made me realise that I like soulmates AUs far more than the actual soulmates trope. Which sounds a bit contradictory, but it's because those AUs usually explore the implications of being soulmates, while--if it's not really the focus of a work--it often feels like it's just there to make the love "more special✨"

ok. i need to compare Astraeus (Lovestruck) to Blade (WIP - Shepherds of Haven) bc as i was trying to make them on Black Desert Mobile i noticed they r pretty similar in... looks
both black haired / eyed with a sort of cropped hairstyle (one is 5'9 and the other is 6'3" tho)
both swordsmen
both given an east Asian... design. I mean Astraeus downright uses a katana as his main weapon and his theme is cherry flowers (which...i still don't know why as he s a Greek mythological figure but *shrug* im used to it now), Blade less so I suppose, i mean his last name is apparently a Welsh name but its just... here and there you get the sense that's the main inspiration for his culture - food, words, style whatever - which i dont like, tbh, making the emotionless, brutal species Like That but I can head-canon around it all I like its the canon (for now) world-building
this i like :D 1 is from an app that shut down.. like 2 years ago and the other is from a WIP work, not all out yet
both have older brothers, though Astraeus surely suffered more in his hands, having served him for years if not decades and it ends with a death... We dont know what that particular thing gonna go with Blade but I think it wont be that brutal.
Both sort of leaders, Astraeus is to titan army (or whats left of it more like) and Blade to Shepherds militia.
THEIR RELATIONSHIP W THE MC: Astraeus pretty much starts in love with the MC, he's low-key a stalker (i mean high key he did kidnap her...) and they have this... connection. Immediately. With Blade... it's... so not that. It's a slow process. Just as strong but slow and steady against.. whatever the fuck was up with Astraeus at one point (and yall kno he s my #1)
Astraeus is very chaotic, the MC says at one point chaos 'thrives within him' (or around him) he's a titan god after all and Blade is.. once again. Not that. Astraeus wears his heart on his sleeve. That's my favorite thing about him actually, he's one of the closest examples I saw to the male femme fatale idea. He's seductive and emotional and acts according to his heart. Blade falls a bit dull against that because we just have…. too many of the emotionless warrior guys, though I gotta give its due, he does his category well - say.. compared to Adam from Wayhaven Chronicles (and there I do love Ava, I know they are the same person but listen almost no female character is Like That) and you can tell he starts caring for the mc - obviously, which makes him much more appealing then the rest of the so called macho guys.
Astraeus is a poet. Blade points out he likes reading poetry. Does he write? I don't know but its surely not a corner of his personality I feel
They also both like gardening, once again Astraeus is more passionate about it, growing a tree in a land where nothing grows (Tartarus) Blade mentioned it but it's not like.. his thing - so far
Overall this made me realize maybe we don't know Blade well, despite the countless asks n everything or that he needs a certain.. something. Not everyone has to be passionate and emotional of course but like uhm... He's a bit too perfect and bland, WHICH is maybe his flaw I mean other characters do call him boring and dour and again the story is far from over so we'll see!

(sleep wake hope and then)
fandom: the wayhaven chronicles characters/pairing: felix hauville/f!detective (delaney keaton) wc: ~1.2k notes: set in book 2, after the sewer encounter with the trappers, if Del had saved Sanja instead of Felix. (not totally decided yet, but I think this would be an au route? I think her canon route is saving felix because she's not a monster). this is just straight, plot-less softness (and lots of giggling). title taken from “anyone lived in a pretty how town,” by e.e. cummings.
[also on ao3]
--
Sunlight filtered through the cracks in Felix’s drawn curtains, the skinny beams of light almost as bright as the DayGlo fabric he’d chosen for his room at the warehouse. Behind him, a drowsy grumble of an exhale that he felt more than heard, the soft warmth of breath along his spine, skin-searing even through the fabric of his shirt. Breath and sleep-warm bodies, almost as warm as the sun nosing at the curtains, which was almost as warm as the ember of Something shimmering in his chest.
She’d stayed.
She’d stayed, she’d stayed, she’d stayed, and he was going to shout about it as soon as it didn’t mean waking her, as soon as Elidor confirmed he’d healed, confirmed this strange ache he felt was the Shimmering Something under his ribs and not the remnants of whatever contraband weaponry the Trappers had managed to get hold of the night before.
Another warm mrfph against his shoulder blades, then cool air as Delaney pulled away from where she’d been curled against him, stretching and yawning. She blinked at him as he turned to beam at her, sooty remnants of slept-in mascara smudged beneath her patchwork eyes, and Felix felt the warmth in his chest simmer again happily, in response or recognition of something in the sleepy answering smile that stretched across Del’s face.
“If I weren’t so relieved at how much better you look,” she mumbled around a swallowed yawn, her voice low and husky with sleep, “I’d be a little annoyed that you can bounce back from major injury this quickly.”
“Not to mention look this gorgeous while doing it, right?”
She giggled, though a valiant attempt was made to turn it into a noise of exasperation. “Don’t gloat.”
Felix sat up, a quick smooth movement that he was pleased to note felt sleek and fluid. No trace of last night’s stiffness, the taut protests of knotty muscles, the tenderness in his rib cage not pain but instead all sparking warmth, curling and stretching somewhere well below the surface. He found her hand on the blanket between them, curled his fingers around the tips of hers with a gentle tug.
“You stayed,” he said softly, eyes shimmering with the same banked embers glowing under his ribs. “Thank you.”
Del’s smile softened, lips parting with a little flash of teeth and a quick sharp exhale. She looked down at their fingers, wiggled hers underneath his without pulling away.
“Yeah, well. Figured you’d need to preen for somebody about your quick healing and I didn’t wanna subject Elidor to it. I want him to keep liking me.”
She lifted her gaze to his with another quick flash of teeth,  a wicked little grin that matched the glimmer of mischief dancing in her eyes. “I mean, have you seen him? He’s like three of me! I’ve got, like, a whole collection of tall friends now. To think I’ve spent all these years thwarted by high shelves and just needed to figure out my mom’s got a secret cabal of giants at her office.”
Felix snorted, still laughing as he leaned down to press a kiss to her temple, his huff of laughter sending a fan of coppery tendrils wafting into Del’s face, which sent her into fresh peals of laughter as she tried to both blow and swipe it out of her eyes. And then they were both shaking and gasping, each almost-caught breath released in a new bubble of giggling as soon as their eyes met.
When they’d finally, finally managed to take a full breath without tripping over fresh laughter, Felix leaned back against his headboard, letting his head flop back, then to the side as his fingers found Del’s again. He gave her a wide, slow smile.
She smiled back, tilting her head with a new, more contained little huff of laughter. “What? Is it the impeccable slept-in makeup? Have I progressed from baby raccoon to full-on panda face? If you’re gonna be my boyfriend, you’re like, ethically obligated to tell me when I resemble a zoo creature.”
Felix laughed again, too, but his was as contained as hers now, fading into a hum of contentment as he looked at her. Next to him in the dreamy, watery haze of not-morning light, sleep-rumpled and in yesterday’s clothes because he’d asked her to stay and she had, curled atop the duvet, arms encircling him, chin resting on his shoulder while he fell asleep. Everything about her seemed to gleam, Felix thought. Every part of her radiant and alive: the burnished copper of her hair, her rosy moonstone skin, her whiskey-colored eyes, one colored with patches of light blue. As if some ancient god of fire crafted living flame in human form.
“Your socks don’t match,” he said solemnly, though his smile remained. Widened, if anything.
Del flexed her feet as she looked to confirm that, indeed, they did not: her left foot bore a baby blue sock while her right, lime green, sported what appeared to be bananas on skateboards.
“They never do,” she said sadly as she grinned back at him, then wrinkled her nose. “Were you really thinking about my socks just now? Because there’s no way yours always match, my dude. Yours don’t even all make it into your own laundry.”
“I just buy all rainbow socks. Poof! Problem solved,” he boasted, as though he’d unlocked the secrets of the universe.
Then his smile flickered a little, turned almost bashful as he said,“I was thinking of how many giants I could convince Rebecca to let you meet if an endless supply of tall friends means I can keep you around all the time.”
Del didn’t say anything for a long moment, her smile widening as she looked at Felix, a manic little bubble of surprise and delight rising in her throat. It came out as another bubble of laughter and she shifted, bending her knee to press it into his leg in a gentle shove.
“Oh my god, that was so soft, Fee. It’s almost like you like me or something.”
He laughed once more, too, and whether she was right or not, Del thought it might be from the same crazed delight that had welled up in her. “You called me your boyfriend,” he teased back.
“Don’t make it weird,” she drawled, another hiccup of a laugh escaping out of her as she leaned forward and pressed her mouth to his, a soft, sweet caress that ended too quickly as Del pulled back, one hand on his chest as she looked at him, face grave.
“Hang on. When you say ‘giants,’ do you mean actual, beanstalk-inhabiting, grind-your-bones-to-make-my-bread, live-in-the-sky giants?”
Felix didn’t even try to mask the smile threatening the corners of his lips, sheer mirth spreading over his entire face as he covered her hand with his.
“I would never lie about giants, Delaney,” he said, and managed to sound almost serious despite his clear amusement before pulling her back to him.
She hummed, a happy quiet vibration against his mouth that rippled into a fresh purl of silvery laughter, deep and joyous and rib-scraping, catching like flames until it was impossible to tell whether each sweet brush against the other’s lips was more the product of kisses or the ebullient echoes of delight. If, indeed, there were any differences to be found between laughter and affection.
And if they had to pull apart every few moments because they were still laughing, neither of them seemed to mind the interruptions.

ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP
Love Interest: adam
Why them?: for veronica it’s kind of retroactive. the way i imagine their True Canon, they don’t have any real romantic moments in book 1, so she doesn’t seriously consider that adam might have feelings for her until well into book 2. (the training scene is when she’s like “oh. ok. i get it now.”) even then it takes a few more chapters for her to really process that, figure out how she feels, and recontextualize everything. like realizing that he loves her and then thinking back on their relationship, knowing that, makes her feel so held (sorry i have no better way to say it) in a way that just makes her want to cry.
to give some actual specific reasons, it’s his dedication and his constancy and hidden care/softness. and his very specific brand of... selflessness might be just left of the word i’m looking for, but hopefully you get me.
Bold, shy, or mixed?: neither! in theory it’s closer to bold, but it’s more just earnest.
What were their first impressions of each other?: disastrous. on top of finding him condescending and unpleasant, there are also a few moments where veronica genuinely wonders whether he’s even a good person. or, like, cares about people. but once she learns the truth of things, a lot of her initial anger gets transferred to rebecca.
adam, with the benefit of knowing what’s actually happening, has a slightly more favorable impression of veronica. yes he thinks she’s difficult and reckless and too emotionally driven, yes she’s making his job absolutely miserable, but he does begrudgingly respect that her accusations are always on the right track and she’s good at her job.
What do they find attractive about each other, mentally or physically?:
for veronica: she loooves his sense of humor. and how much faith he has in the people he cares about. physically, dimples <3. but everything about his smile really. and his nose!
for adam: veronica has a very blunt, unadorned sense of kindness to her that he really loves. the way she is kind before she is nice and values directness. physically, her eyes, they’re deep brown and so expressive.
What do they do to spend time together?: they’re both competitive so anything where they can compete on the same team is fun. (competing against each other is fun too, but also like. exhausting. for them and everyone.) maybe puzzles or other things where it feels like they’re “winning” or solving something together. i have spent an embarrassing amount of thought on veronica and overw*tch esp*rts and she would absolutely make adam learn how to play main tank so they could queue as a tank duo. but most of the time i think they don’t Do specific things together; they just hang out. just talk with each other. perhaps snuggle.
What is their favorite memory together?: in current canon... lol. veronica really just treasures any time adam relaxes around her but those moments always get Ruined. even once they’re well into a relationship, i think veronica’s favorite memory would still be something small like a random time he said something funny and they both laughed together and they were outside and the sky was pretty.
What are their love languages?: acts of service for both of them, but especially adam. veronica... probably lots of words of affirmation and physical touch. they’re both bad at blocking out time for themselves in the first place, so quality time can get neglected especially at first.
How do they handle being apart from one another?: pretty well i think! once they’re in an established relationship at least, before that it’s probably harder. but adam can distract himself with work, and veronica is good at focusing on whatever’s in front of her (whether that’s work or she’s away on vacation or something). if neither of them is too busy, veronica calls every night and they stay on a while, half talking and half just keeping each other company.
Do they argue? How do they handle arguments and disagreements? How do they make up?: i think arguments are fairly rare! yes they’re both insanely stubborn, but they also understand each other pretty well (especially once in a relationship) and are very sympathetic to where the other is coming from. unless both of them are extremely stressed, one of them crumbles when they start genuinely arguing like "i don't want to fight ok, let's take a second."
What does their future look like?: who knows! i haven’t decided whether veronica will turn. i think she probably will, just because i do not want my main pairing for this IF to make me very sad all the time, but like. i’m not fully committing until i see a reason pop up in canon. as of book 3′s final demo, it’s not on her radar at all; she knows she loves adam and wishes they could Talk, but ultimately doesn’t expect or even want a relationship right now (because she doesn’t want to deal with dating one of rebecca’s agents OR with the logistics of being in a committed relationship with an immortal being). it’s just all so foreign to her current state of mind that it’s really hard to say!
Anything else you'd like to share: do you know how hard it was to answer some of these considering veronica wasn’t sure they were even, like, on decent terms for such a large portion of the canon content
BEST FRIEND RELATIONSHIP
Best friend: morgan and farah are essentially joint besties but i’ll go with M
Why them?: i think they appreciate each other’s no bullshit attitude. morgan likes that veronica doesn’t take herself too seriously and respects/relates to the way she tackles problems (quickly, head-on, and without complaint but also without pretending that it doesn’t suck?). veronica appreciates morgan’s bluntness, likes bantering with her, and in general just likes being around people that have quiet/steady presences.
What were their first impressions of each other?: neither of them had much of a first impression honestly. morgan barely thought of veronica at all beyond “she’s annoying,” and kept to herself so much that any dislike veronica had of morgan took a backseat to her dealing with the rest of unit bravo.
What do they do to spend time together?: lots of just sitting in the same room and listening to (low volume) music, veronica spends a lot of time hunting for songs morgan might like. morgan is also her go-to sparring/training buddy. and there are semi-frequent movie nights where veronica shows farah her favorite old shitty B movies, and sometimes morgan will tag along just to sit in the room with them or affectionately talk shit.
Anything else you'd like to share: i’ll talk a little about N! obviously veronica and nate respect, trust, and like each other, but she finds him the hardest of UB to connect with. they’re both people who wear their compassion on their sleeves but keep a lot of their hearts/themselves held back, so they just kind of circle each other, especially since like... nate values politeness and is very sweet in how he relates to people, while veronica values directness and is more jokey/lighthearted to put people at ease. idk how well i’m communicating this; as of the book 3 demo it’s getting easier, but their friendship is still newer/more... nebulous? than the others.
OTHER RELATIONSHIPS (Feel free to go in depth!)
Relationship with Rebecca: so strained. veronica has come to terms with rebecca’s absences throughout her childhood, but there’s newer resentment over... a lot of things, but how she handled the murphy case especially. veronica hates being kept in the dark, and even more than that she hates being rebecca’s priority. it’s difficult to reconcile her childhood and present images of rebecca, and she’s angry that rebecca is so freely and recklessly choosing her, now, to the point of endangering others if she has to, especially when she never felt like rebecca’s choice before. and incredibly frustrated/confused by how often the lines between their professional and familial relationships are blurred and what rebecca actually wants from her.
Relationship with Rook: veronica takes after rook a lot. in stat terms, the only trait they don’t share is stoic, and even then that’s veronica’s least extreme stat. people always told her how like her father she was growing up, and it’s a comparison she took/takes a lot of pride in! she looks up to him based on the stories, but more recently is uncomfortable with the comparisons. veronica would never have even come back to wayhaven if her life panned out as planned, let alone become a detective or joined the agency. that makes her doubt herself, and she feels like that doubt is letting rook down somehow.
rook is also part of the reason her relationship with rebecca isn’t as bad as it could be. she knows that rook loved her, and that he would want his family to be there for each other, so she feels obligated to at least try to make things better. but it’s really hard for her to move past everything to connect with rebecca (which also makes her feel like she’s disappointing rook).
Relationship with Bobby: they were together for a long time and veronica thought she loved him a lot! it was her first relationship, so she wasn’t sure a) what a “bad partner” looked like, or b) how to even be in a relationship or rely on someone in that way. so they spent a lot of time together and had great superficial chemistry, but veronica didn’t have enough experience with not feeling neglected to realize how shallow it was, or notice the red flags when she did occasionally open up. the plagiarism fiasco was a slap in the face, especially because it cost her internships/grad school apps/whatever, i don’t have the details, and forced her to move back to wayhaven after school. she’s still very hurt by it and finds it hard to be around bobby.
Relationship with Verda: due to the above plagiarism fiasco, veronica was pretty depressed when she moved back home, and disliking her job didn’t help. she was extremely jealous when verda was hired and wanted to hate him. but it did not take long for that to crumble into respect/admiration, and eventually into close friendship! verda is a role model for her; they bond over science; they joke easily and have good chill fun. she was really excited to see him piecing together the truth about the supernatural and then devastated to see how he reacted. she feels insanely guilty and thinks it was selfish of her to let him figure it out, but is also cautiously optimistic about making it up to him as of the book 3 demo.
Relationship with Tina: very close! veronica isolated herself when she came back to wayhaven after school, and she is so grateful to tina for being her closest friend and link to the rest of the world during that time. hates keeping the supernatural from her, though. she didn’t like lying to tina to begin with, but she feels even worse about it now that verda knows, and now that tina has clearly picked up on something being wrong but she still can’t say anything.
Relationship with the Mayor: cannot stand him. hates the way he talks about rook, hates the way he talks to rebecca. she cooperates as necessary but doesn’t bother hiding her lack of patience/respect for him.
Relationship with Capt. Sung: basically fine. i think veronica might be a little too casual for him in the way she works, but she always gets the job done so he’s not too bothered by it. (she is ‘bend the rules,’ but more ‘strict rules aren’t important as long as you’re still doing good work’ than the ‘boooo fuck paperwork’ variety. so it’s mostly fine.) she also appreciates him as a minor link to rook.
Relationship with Haley: very friendly, but not super close. they get along great and could make pleasant conversation for hours, but ultimately don’t know each other super well despite the familiarity of growing up together.
Relationship with Elidor: such a comforting presence for veronica during her recovery! she is so grateful, so fond.
Relationship with Tapeesa/Vieno: veronica loves vieno’s cranky-yet-friendly vibe and they get along well! not close, but will stop to chat whenever they pass each other.
Relationship with Unit Alpha: loves their energy. always looks forward to the next opportunity to chat with them, and fully supports any harmless dunking on UB even if she rarely joins in.
Relationship with the Maa-alused: going through the house of mirrors and then coming home for them to appear in her apartment and infect bobby was one of thee worst experiences of her life, and it’s hard for her to get past that + the illness in general. sympathizes with them, and got them to sign the treaty, but is still kind of unsettled by everything that happened and by falk.
Do they have any other important relationships, past or present? (Relatives, friends, etc.?): some vague figures i have in mind but no one i’ve really developed. a couple friends from college, and maybe an elderly couple that lives on her childhood street and used to check in her.
PERSONAL BIO
Describe their personality: her usual demeanor is very warm and casual. sincere but private--she’s pretty blunt and likes to be direct with people, but steers conversations away from personal topics. likes to joke around and doesn’t take herself that seriously. but behind all this, she’s extremely stubborn and won’t shy away from conflict if she thinks you’re in the wrong (which is why she seems like a different person in the first half of book 1. UB is surprised by how like... chill and nice she is once they clear the air). a workaholic, self-reliant and secure but still pretty hard on herself, takes a lot of responsibility for the people around her.
Strengths: so dedicated. honest and trustworthy, has a strong moral compass and can always be counted on to do her absolute best. flexible and intuitive, her brain works really fast.
Weaknesses: cannot compartmentalize or separate herself from a case, throws herself so recklessly into everything (in terms of both physical danger and emotional burnout). doesn’t necessarily hold grudges but has a hard time letting go of hurt, still can’t think objectively about bobby or rebecca.
Where in the world is their Wayhaven?: somewhere on the US east coast idk what to tell you. perhaps a carolina or a virginia.
What is their personal history?: veronica was pretty social and well-liked around wayhaven growing up. she was known as just a really good kid; she was an overachiever and got along with almost anyone. in college, she felt like she was free of something and took a very work hard/play hard approach to life. always doing or going, whether it was for school or work or fun. she really enjoyed life during this time but crashed and burned pretty hard when she and bobby broke up; a lot of her plans were delayed until the plagiarism incident was resolved and she didn’t really have the heart to pursue them afterwards.
a year or so after graduating, she returned to wayhaven with the intention of taking one more year to regroup, and she has been stuck there longer than she meant to be and has kind of hit a wall when book 1 starts.
If they weren't a detective, what would their dream job be?: she was on track to become a biochemist and it was her dream job but then the main plot happened to her.
Anything else you'd like to share: i don’t really know enough to fully explain this, but no OC i love is a cop so like. i think maybe the job she took when she got back to wayhaven was a douglas-esque receptionist role for detective reele’s private office. then reele retired and small town politics + veronica’s history of useful contributions to cases in her downtime at work led to her being pressured to take up the mantle. it’s hard to explain why she’s a detective when she so deeply does not want to be one but i am Trying (or maybe she would have jumped at the chance to do something marginally closer to forensics?? who knows)
RANDOM FACTS
Zodiac sign: aries is what i assigned her when i first made her and i think it suits her! plus it’d be fun for her and M to be twins. this goes hand-in-hand with my birthday commitment issues though
Hobbies: music (she plays guitar and bass and sings a little), running, gaming unfortunately. i could also see her having been into boxing or some martial art but idk what exactly!
Likes: early morning stillness, DIY projects, t-shirts with inexplicable slogans and other weird thrift store finds
Dislikes: overly sweet food or drink, when cold weather lasts too long, being lied to or “protected” from the truth
Drink of choice: something with gin maybe. also feels a great fondness and gratitude for cheap wine.
Starbucks order: i truly know nothing about coffee. is it weird to order black coffee at starbucks
Favorite food: variations on spicy chicken soup! she eats a lot of crockpot meals for convenience and they’ve grown on her, and she has a few different recipes based on whatever she has on hand.
Favorite color: maybe like a rusty orange
Favorite music: she will listen to anything, but her favorite is probably folk rock, or sometimes stuff with soul or old school country vibes. big thief is a good example of an artist she’d be into i think! also was very into the indie music scene in her college town and still follows some of those bands.
Favorite genre (and favorite movie/book/etc): loves old, campy, unselfconsciously optimistic sci-fi. loves star trek tos. also a fan of documentaries of all kinds.
Favorite season: summer
Anything else you'd like to share: a kiss for you reading this mwah

--
He’s acting casual, he’s acting like he doesn’t care, but the last thing Tanner wants right now is to be dragged onto an Agency mission before he’s found Helk. It’s why he hadn’t informed the Agency of what he was doing, he didn’t want the “while you’re in the area…” situation that he’s found himself in now.
And of all the Units, it has to be Bravo. It has to be Adam. If he’d been caught out by Alpha, he knows that he can get Lesedi on side enough for her to allow him to finish his personal business. But Adam is a by the book hardass, and he doesn’t particularly like Tanner. Even better would’ve been if Delta had been working in Wayhaven. As unlikely as it might seem for a bunch of demons to get along so well with a nephilim, he knows that they probably would’ve helped him find Helk before starting on their own assignment.
But no. He’s stuck with Adam and the rest of Unit Bravo. He hasn’t met the two female members of the unit, not all of them were considered necessary for the mission he’d assisted Adam and Nate with in the past, but he can’t imagine that they’d be any more fun than the two members he does know and he dreads the thought of being stuck with them all for any period of time.
“This is it.” Adam announces as they get to the end of a driveway that Tanner hadn’t noticed they were walking along, it seems like barely more than a cattle trail, and he arches an eyebrow at the building standing before them.
“You’re messing with me, aren’t you?” He asks Adam, who just frowns back at him and doesn’t seem to know how to answer.
“What are you implying?”
Tanner sighs and gives a shrug, pushing past him and Nate to get to the door.
“It’s a dump.” He mutters, knowing full well that the two vampires would’ve heard him. He hears Adam start to say something from behind him but he stops abruptly, and Tanner knows that Nate has probably stopped him and is trying to keep him from becoming too angry. It’s not a hard thing to achieve with the commanding agent.
He pushes at the doors, any hope that he’d had for the place being nicer on the inside than on the outside diminishing with every second as he takes in the dilapidated building. He turns to face them, letting them see how unimpressed he is with their residence, and Adam just huffs out a sigh as he steps past him. He swipes a card against a panel on the wall and a door opens to something that’s much more what Tanner was expecting. Maybe even a little nicer. It was obviously not Adam who was in charge of decorating the place.
“Are you satisfied?” Adam asks sharply, and Tanner smirks at him and gives a small shrug.
“That depends on what the rest of your unit is like, I suppose. I’m reserving judgement for now.”
An uneasy expression crosses Adam’s faces at the mention of the two agents that Tanner has yet to meet and he can’t help but wonder why he seems to want to keep Tanner away from them. It couldn’t possibly just be because Adam doesn’t like him.
He doesn’t have to wonder for long as Adam and Nate lead him down a hall and through a door which seems to open into some kind of common room and he lays eyes on the remaining two agents. The shorter of the two leaps up from where she’s sprawled haphazardly on a chair on the other side of the room, a wide grin on her face as she bounds over to him. She eyes him up and down before shooting a confused frown in Nate’s direction.
“He’s not what I expected.”
Tanner cocks an eyebrow at Nate, studying him harshly for a moment before turning his attention to the cheery girl in front of him. He likes her already.
“Been talking about me have you, Sewell?” He asks Nate, though his attention remains on the girl as he takes her hand in his and lifts it to his lips to kiss the back of it. She lets out a laugh as she looks in Nate’s direction briefly before pulling her hand back.
“I’m Farah.”
“Pleasure to meet you darling, I’m Tanner.” He smiles and gives a small bow before his eyes shift over to the other girl leaning against a small corner table, an unlit cigarette hanging from between her lips as she studies his and Farah’s interaction with narrowed eyes.
“So this ray of sunshine must be Morgan, am I right?”
--
He's good looking. Annoyingly good looking. Morgan had at least been hoping for someone not so easy on the eyes to make it easier for her to ignore them. But damn.
Her eyes subtly roam up and down the length of his body as she watches him greet Farah. He's tall - very tall, only an inch or so shorter than Nate. Not as big as Adam but definitely not scrawny and he exudes a cocky kind of charm that she already finds herself feeling drawn to.
"So this ray of sunshine must be Morgan, am I right?" He turns dark brown eyes in her direction, studying her intently as he runs a hand through his hair before stepping over closer to her.
"If you're after a ray of sunshine you're barking up the wrong tree." She tells him dryly and one of his eyebrows quirks up slightly as a smirk slowly crawls across his lips.
"I see." He replies, amusement dripping from his tone before he turns his back on her, focusing back in on Farah.
She dislikes him already. He's full of himself and cocky and most likely bratty and as Adam had put it, infuriating. But, he's also good looking and hey, what's the harm in trying her luck?
Except that it would see the moment's passed and he's already acting like she's not even in the room. He has Farah laughing, almost hysterically and she scowls at his back for a moment before pushing herself off of the table she's leaning on and snatching her lighter up out of her pocket as she stomps outside.
--
He notices her leave the room even though he pretends he doesn't, pretends that he's too busy talking to Farah. He knows her type, he'd known it the second he'd laid eyes on her. Grouchy, anti-social bitches who despite everything somehow think they're charming enough to get laid anyway.
It's not that he's against sleeping with her - quite the opposite actually - but he also knows how much fun it can be to string people like that along for a while before giving them a bit. The fact that the only other female in the group already seems a bit besotted with him will only make it easier to get under Morgan's skin.
He quite likes Farah so far anyway, so it shouldn't be too hard to act as though he's cosied up to her. If luck's on his side he might even manage to get her in the sack and really piss Morgan off.
"Where did Morgan go?" Farah asks after a moment, glancing around the room.
"Cigarette, I presume." Adam answers from where he's waiting on the phone, Tanner assumes he's informing the Agent he'd mentioned that they've returned. Either way he seizes the opportunity, dropping his bag onto the table beside him and retrieving his own cigarettes.
"Good idea." He gives Farah a smile and a small bow before excusing himself and heading out in the direction that Morgan had disappeared in.
He begins to follow the path that Adam and Nate had led him on to get to the common room, pausing when he hears a quiet but steady bang, bang, bang. Frowning he follows the source of the noise, up staircases until he reaches the door to the roof.
Morgan's sitting on the edge, smoke curling into the air in front of her and her legs dangling over the edge. Her legs are swinging, softly hitting the wall below her and providing the noise that had helped him find her.
She glances over her shoulder when the door opens and rolls her eyes before turning away again and taking another drag of her cigarette. Undeterred by her unveiled hostility, Tanner strides over and plops down next to her, lighting his own cigarette before glancing over at her.
"Those things will kill you, you know." He jokes, gesturing to the cigarette in her hand. She doesn't even scoff out half of a laugh, doesn't even look over at him as she answers.
"Alright, human."
"How dare you!?" He gasps in fake horror, pressing his free hand to his chest as though she's wounded him. It seems to pique her interest just slightly and she glances over at him.
"Are you pissed off about being human, or are you pissed off that I called you out on it?"
"I'm not human." He answers simply, looking back away from her and taking a drag of his smoke. Well that definitely got her attention. He's somewhat surprised that Adam and Nate haven't already told the other two agents everything about him, but it definitely explains why she'd been so outwardly dismissive of him. Some supernaturals are funny about those things.
"So what are you?" She asks, shifting to face him a little more and moving closer to him in the process. She leans towards him and wrinkles her nose before adding, "you're at least half human."
"You're a perceptive one, aren't you?" He grins down at her and she straightens back up as though only just realising how close she's gotten to him.
"I'm a nephilim." He answers after a moment, and she rolls her eyes again before they shift to meet his.
"Half breed."
"I've been called worse." He leans back into her to whisper and finally, finally he manages a smirk from her. More than that, she shifts her cigarette to her other hand to brush her fingers over his where his hand is resting on the roof between them.
"I bet you have, sweetheart." She murmurs before snapping her hand away, the smirk stretching into something of a grin before she looks away from him again.
Oh yeah. She wants it bad already. This is gonna be fun.
--
The agent has already arrived by the time he and Morgan make it back down to the common room, and Tanner can't help but notice the disapproving stares both Adam and Nate cast in their direction when they step through the door. Morgan arches an eyebrow at them then looks towards him, obviously giving him a once over before turning back to them.
"We were gone for fifteen minutes, if he could be done that fast you think I'd look this happy?"
"This is you happy?" Tanner asks incredulously before anyone else can answer, causing Farah to burst out laughing from where she's draped herself all over two of the chairs, her body slouched on one and her feet propped up on the one beside it.
"Tanner, you have no idea." She comments through her laughter, shaking her head with a grin.
"Agent Drake-" The stranger in the room tries to divert the conversation, but Tanner holds a hand up to interrupt her, only just now noticing that the detective he'd met earlier is standing beside her.
"Not an agent." He interjects, successfully masking the annoyance he feels at the title. It's not the first time someone's mistaken him for an agent, and he struggles to think of anything worse than being officially associated with the Agency. It wasn't until he'd been given a tour of a facility and seen what was in store for him if he didn't agree to work on call for them that he'd been confident in his decision to take them up on their offer. It turns out there are things worse than death after all.
"Right, Tanner." The agent corrects with a small nod. "I’m Agent Langford, this is my son and Wayhaven's detective, Lucas. He works with Unit Bravo."
"Actually, we've met." Tanner grins at him and the detective gives a stiff, forced smile in return. Agent Langford ignores the obvious tension in the room caused by Tanner's presence and continues.
"Since you are in Wayhaven without an assignment, we need you to work with Morgan to track someone down."
"What?" Morgan sputters, even Adam frowns and takes a small step towards Agent Langford.
"We don't require his assistance."
"You've been tracking him for almost three weeks and you are no closer than you were when you started. He's a bounty hunter, finding people is his job." The Agent points out, drawing a resigned sigh from Adam despite the sharp glare he throws in Tanner's direction.
"I can work with him."
"We’ll need Morgan with him when he finds him. We still believe he's working with others, we need direction from him to find the rest of them."
"I can simply-"
"Morgan is our interrogation specialist. Tanner will find him, Morgan will question him. Understood?"
Tanner watches the exchange between the two in amusement, trying not to laugh at how easily this woman can get him to back down.
"Do I get a say?" He pipes up once they fall silent, and everyone in the room glares at him. Except for Farah, who lets out a light chuckle.
"No." Agent Langford replies, pointing a finger at him as though scolding a child for eating cookies before dinner. "You took it upon yourself to travel here without permission. While you are here, you might as well make yourself useful."
"Naughty boy." Morgan drawls quietly from beside him, and he glances over to see her smirking at him. He leans down closer to her, so close that his lips just barely brush against her ear when he whispers.
"You have no idea, sunshine."
--
Morgan can't quite put her finger on this new guy, can't tell if she wants to get into his pants or punch him in his smug face. Maybe both. Despite how good looking he is, he's arrogant and remarkably self assured for a half breed. He's a jerk, really. But charming enough to be able to get away with it and he seems fully aware of it.
He's definitely got Farah on-side already, which might make Morgan feel a little better about him usually, but Farah's friendly and sees the best in everyone. Nate's very obviously wary of him, and Adam doesn't seem to be too keen on him either. His apparent dislike of the Agency is curious as well, and she can't help but wonder what he's doing working for them if he thinks so little of them.
Beyond all of that though, she can't work out why she can't get him out of her head.
"You like him, huh?" Farah's grins at her from the doorway of her room and Morgan rolls her eyes as she sits on the edge of her bed.
"I'd probably like him better with his clothes off." She deadpans and Farah huffs out a sigh as she makes her way into the room to sit down beside Morgan.
"I think he's nice."
"Nice?"
"Yeah, funny too."
"I didn't pay that much attention to what was coming out of his mouth."
"Just, try to wait until you're done working with him before you get him into bed." Farah advises with a small sigh, patting Morgan's thigh lightly before getting to her feet again.
"I'll try. No promises, though." Morgan grins at her as she shakes her head and leaves the room.
The grin fades once she's alone again and remembers that she's the one who's going to have to work with the guy. Alone. She groans and gets to her feet, deciding to go and join Adam in the training room. She can hear the muffled thumps of him hitting the training dummies and knows that he's probably working out his own frustrations after learning that Tanner's going to be around for a while.
It's probably exactly what she needs to get the nephilim off her mind.
--
“God dammit.” Tanner mutters to himself as he steps back into the hotel room and dumps his stuff back down on the bed, Luckily he’d decided against giving up his room just yet, and luckily he’d managed to convince Unit Bravo that he didn’t need to stay in their warehouse with them. He wants the option to skip town if needed - he doesn’t exactly fancy the idea of working with either Adam or Nate again.
The news that he’d be working mainly with Morgan had been more than welcome. Besides not needing to spend excessive amounts of time with the two male agents, Morgan was already proving to be more entertaining that he’d expected. He supposes that if he’s to be stuck in this town, there are worse ways to be stuck than having to work with a hot and obviously eager vampire.
Plus he really doesn’t want to piss the Agency off too much and wind up being imprisoned by them. He’s to go back to the warehouse in the morning for details of the person he needs to find. So he’ll find them for Unit Bravo (perhaps have a little fun with Morgan while he’s at it), then find Helk and get his rings back and then be gone. Probably to an Agency facility far away from here so that he doesn’t get roped into another mission with bloody Bravo.
But he can do this, it shouldn’t take too long just because it’s taken three weeks for a bunch of vampires to get nowhere. Vampires are incredibly efficient when they know exactly what they’re after. They can follow scents, sounds, even feelings sometimes once they’ve already met the person they need to find. Useless though when it’s an unknown. What’s taken them three weeks to get nowhere on should take Tanner no more than a couple of days, then once he has the supernatural in his grasp he can turn them over to the unit and then wipe his hands of the entire situation and do what he came here for.

Penny! She wears nice clothes that definitely would require ironing.

who is more likely to cringe at the other’s fashion sense at times?
Penny. The waistcoat, Felix. Why. No
who crushed first?
FELIX DIDDDDDDD. Penny got flustered but is very :/ at relationships bc she struggles socially and the only serious relationship she had prior was fucking BOBBY. So she straight up doesn’t trust that felix is being genuine at first. Also she’s a lil bit oblivious.

nope!
who is more likely to stumble home, drunk, at 3am?
neither
who swears the most?

13, 14 and 15 for all detectives and routes from the Wayhaven Routes Questions, please!
Mallory
13. Did your detective save A or Sanja? Why do you think they do so? And how are they feeling about the aftermath? (Sanja dying, A getting hurt, both being fine in the end)
Mallory saved Sanja. It was a harder choice than she expected it to be, given that Sanja was their mission and she would technically count as a non-combatant, so her protection would be priority even without the maa-alused treaty in the picture(my girl is nothing if not a protector). But Mallory started flashing back to Murphy jamming a dagger in Adam’s ribs the second she saw him in trouble, so she did actually hesitate the barest fraction of a second(we are not going to talk about the “You need to let go” parallels between here and after the Murphy fight in book one. my heart). That fight and him being so hurt are what finally started her denial of her feelings crumbling into absolute dust... (also gave her big-time PTSD flashbacks, so that was really fun)
14. If your detective did save Sanja, how do they feel about the famous “Tu Omnia”? If they saved A, how are they feeling about them saying that they are glad that they thought of them first? (But, of course, they say they mustn’t feel this way)
...And then hurt, drugged-up Adam admits he’s glad he didn’t have to choose between her and Sanja(implying he’s not sure he would have Made The Right Call) and her heart just about stopped for a minute, before we even get to the Tu Omnia. Which. Oh man. OH MAN. Mallory walked out of that room with her hands shaking and had to lean against the closed door for a minute to get her emotions under control or there were about three different directions of breakdown she might’ve gone. As someone who mutters under her breath in Hebrew a lot when she doesn’t want other people to know what she’s saying, she has a pretty good guess why Adam went to Latin for that (not-so)little confession (too bad for him she knows Latin :3), which is why she doesn’t ever bring it up. (Well, that and me loving the idea of Adam not knowing she understood him until he sees her Latin tattoo and Panicking)
15. What is your detective’s relationship with Rebecca like? If they saw the conversation that she has with A before the end of Book 2, what would they think?
Mallory and Rebecca had a pretty good relationship. They’re not as close as AJ or Janine are to their Rebeccas, but they’re definitely on good terms. I guess it’s more... professional? for Mallory and Rebecca until the beginning of Book 2, when Rebecca says she doesn’t regret the consequences for giving Unit Bravo the DMB to help rescue Mallory. Mallory knows how much her mother loves her job, so that she was willing to risk it for her is when they start moving toward being actual mother-daughter close.
If she’d overheard that conversation.... well, first of all, it would make her smile to hear Rebecca’s proud of her. The rest of it would leave a hollow ache in her chest that she not sure if it’s due to Adam’s denying Rebecca has anything to worry about or how much he struggled with it after Rebecca’s clarification she was asking as a mother.
AJ
13. Did your detective save N or Sanja? Why do you think they do so? And how are they feeling about the aftermath? (Sanja dying, N getting hurt, both being fine in the end) Do they regret their decision?
She saved Sanja. Sanja was the one they were there to save, and Nate told her not to worry about him. Didn’t make it easy, by any stretch, and she panicked just a tad when she saw how badly he was hurt as a result. But she didn’t regret it, and she knew Nate wouldn’t either, even before he said as much.
14. What do you think drew your detective to N? And when exactly was the moment, where it was “yes, I like them” (If they’ve admitted that to themselves, of course) And if not, what’s stopping them at this point?
Answered!
15.  What is your detective’s relationship with Rebecca like? If they saw the conversation that she has with N before the end of Book 2, what would they think?
AJ has a really great relationship with Rebecca. They talk whenever they get the chance and she always looks forward to the occasions Rebecca manages to visit.  If she’d seen the conversation between Nate and Rebecca at the end of book 2, she first reaction would’ve been indignation that Rebecca could even think Nate would ever hurt her(come on, that’s ridiculous. Right?), followed by near melting into a puddle at his response.
Janine
13. Did your detective save F or Sanja? Why do you think they do so? And how are they feeling about the aftermath? (Sanja dying, F getting hurt, both being fine in the end) Do they regret their decision?
Sanja, but oh my god, it was so much harder for her than anyone else.Even if saving Sanja was the reason they were there, she had to force herself to do it instead of saving Felix. And then he got hurt so bad and Janine was an absolute wreck until the doctor assured them he’d be okay. Absolutely cuddled and was Big Spoon bc her protective instincts were in overdrive. She doesn’t regret saving Sanja, but she does regret that Felix got hurt, even if he is a vampire with healing abilities and was fine by morning.
14. What do you think drew your detective to F? And when exactly was the moment, where it was “yes, I like them” (If they’ve admitted that to themselves, of course) And if not, what’s stopping them at this point?
Tumblr media
Definitely how joyful he is, and how heart-on-sleeve, no holds barred, infectiously open he is about it. He’s fun to spend time with, makes her smile(and trip over her words, which is no mean feat), and never holds back from complimenting people he cares about(She gets a lot of that, but there’s also the super casual, “Oh yeah, Nate knows, like all the languages” type ones, where even if he’s teasing in the process, he’s still complimenting someone from UB). She knew she liked him by the whole vampire reveal in book 1, was about 60% sure she was in love by the unicorn necklace, 80% by time they actually started dating, and is 98% sure she’s in love by the end of book 2.
15.  What is your detective’s relationship with Rebecca like? If they saw the conversation that she has with F before the end of Book 2, what would they think?
Very close(all my girls love their mama. If I had to rank it though, it’s AJ->Janine->Mallory->Kasey), mostly through effort on Janine’s part thanks to how busy Rebecca is. She’ll call and leave a message if Rebecca can’t talk, just “Hey, Mum, wanted to say hi [insert something about her day] and let you know I love you.” type things. That conversation? Ohgod. You want her reaction before or after she melted into a Detective-shaped puddle at “When we kiss she doesn’t break. She smiles.”? XD That was... that was adorable and she’d be walking around grinning the entire rest of the night, not even remembering anything else she overheard.
Kasey
13. Did your detective save M or Sanja? Why do you think they do so? And how are they feeling about the aftermath? (Sanja dying, M getting hurt, both being fine in the end) Do they regret their decision?
Sanja, again. (look I love her. And the vamps all have healing, it’s fine. Bonus: juicy, juicy ANGST) Mason said not to worry about him, and Sanja was clearly in big trouble, being restrained and all. Even if Mason wasn’t exactly in a good position, at least he could fight back. Sanja couldn’t. Afterward there’s this weird twisty feeling almost like guilt that she hides under sarcasm and giving him shit(teasing him by kissing just the corner of his mouth)
14. What do you think drew your detective to M? And when exactly was the moment, where it was “yes, I like them” (If they’ve admitted that to themselves, of course) And if not, what’s stopping them at this point?
Well, he’s hot. And there’s the innuendo-laden flirting that had her all CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. And we can’t forget the Cherry Conversation in her canon run that had her very
Tumblr media
She has not admitted to herself she likes him for reasons beyond physical attraction, competitive flirting, and great sex, bc admitting that will mean letting herself be vulnerable in ways that make her uncomfortable to think about. (She doesn’t realize that yet; she’s sorta doing the same thing he is right now, the whole “man, you’re hot and great in bed, that’s totally all there is to it, there’s no deeper reason I’m drawn to you, none at all :D”)
15.  What is your detective’s relationship with Rebecca like? If they saw the conversation that she has with M before the end of Book 2, what would they think?
She’s on okay terms with Rebecca. They’re not super close, but they get along and she’ll hug her when she sees her.
If she’d overheard that conversation, her first thought would probably have been along the lines of “Damn straight I’m not sorry” bc she’d be thinking just in reference to the flirting/sex and she’s enjoyed both of those things immensely. Then she’d maybe think about Rebecca’s tone and wonder for juuuust a second if there was a deeper meaning before brushing it off.

This isn’t completely solid yet but I wanted to write out how things go in the twins canon
So the twins were born and raised in Wayhaven, after their father died Rebecca more or less dropped them off with an uncaring uncle and very very rarely ever saw the twins growing up
We’re talking like.....she’d maybe visit for a weekend a month
Poloma dated Bobby in college and it was her first real love but after Bobby stole her work, lied to all their friends making it seem like she was trying to steal from him, and ruining her reputation, she decided she wasn’t going to going to make that mistake again
Pax was one of the people that Bobby couldn’t persuade and after everything he absolutely loathes him
Pax was the first one to be promoted to detective about a year or so before the old detective I don’t remember their name retired, more or less so they could coast through the last year of their career
Poloma was promoted simply because of that detective retiring
Okay so moving on to the events of Book One
Both twins are at the crime scene and both twins go to that abandoned warehouse, they take Poloma’s car since Pax only has his motorcycle and it’s still too cold to be riding that around
Pax pepper sprays Adam
At the Official Meeting, Pax is professional and welcoming, Poloma tries to be welcoming but gets a little snarky with Mason (Felix kisses Poloma’s hand and she likes him immediately)
Listening to the four talk, Poloma highly suspects that these are the same four people they ran into at the warehouse but after asking about it Pax is convinced that they aren’t
At Adam’s dismissal of them, Poloma goes with the “ah yes you obviously don’t need our help since you’ve already caught the guy orrrrr...wait...no you haven’t” which leaves Pax to to play peacekeeper alongside Nate
So since Nate is present in all three investigative routes, here is how I see that playing out, Nate and Pax go to talk to Verda while Poloma makes a call to Tina to get the details on their witness and get a cup of coffee since Pax fixed that earlier
Then when those two are done, Poloma, Nate, and Mason go to talk to Mrs Hudders
After ub leaves for the evening the twins sit down and chat, Poloma still thinks ub are the same guys as the night before and with how weird Nate and Mason were after talking to Mrs Hudders (and after Pax tells her about Nate’s reactions when they were talking to Verda) she’s convinced they’re hiding something and is frustrated that these guys that were sent to “help” them are probably doing nothing more than standing in their way
Pax doesn’t agree, well he agrees they’re probably lying about something but really believes that since ub is there to help that they’re really trying to solve the case while including the twins as much as they can. Since they’re shady Agency types there’s probably a lot of things that are Top Secret. Poloma isn’t convinced.
The next day Pax and Nate go to talk to Kate, Poloma goes back to the station
Both of the twins, Nate and Adam go to talk to Verda
They decide to split up a bit, Nate, Adam, and Pax looking into the weird blood while Felix, Mason, and Poloma focus on the connection between the victims (this is also where there starts to be hints that Felix and Poloma absolutely cannot work alone together because they’ll distract each other)
Poloma loses to Pax in rock, paper, scissors, and has to take the call from the mayor
Both twins get to have their moments with their lis on patrol
Then for the fight with Adam, Pax leaves to talk to Verda, Poloma talks to Kate and comes back before Pax which leaves her to fight with Adam and then she runs into her brother down in Verda’s office
They both decide to leave Adam to cool off and head to the hospital, Pax drives and Poloma calls Mason but after Poloma tells her brother that Nate hadn’t been in the office when she got back, Pax leaves him a voicemail too
Poloma gets snarky with the receptionist at the hospital so Pax volunteers to go talk to Murphy while she hangs out in the hallway
When she hears the glass breaking, Poloma runs in and of course sees the broken beaker and Pax bleeding, Murphy does the whole take her hand, try to convince her to calm down and sit which doesn’t work so he now has confirmation that these are the people he’s looking for
Pax convinces Poloma that they need to stay at work that night even though Poloma would very very much like to go to the bar with Tina it’s been a week okay the girl just wants a bREAK They work in Pax’s office and when he goes to grab them both a snack and some coffee Bobby makes his appearance and ends up bugging Pax’s office
Somewhere in here Douglas had managed to sneak back into the station, possibly looking for a place to sober up a bit before heading home
Pax returns and immediately kicks Bobby the fuck out of the building
The fight goes down about the same with the added bonus of Pax saving Douglas and telling him to run, each of the twins gets to help out their li, Pax fights along side Felix and Poloma ends up pulling the fire alarm to end it
Only Pax ends up getting knocked out, Poloma manages to duck is this something she ends up teasing him about forever? The answer is a resounding Yes
Everyone heads to the facility, Poloma drives probably to transport her brother? With Nate and Adam at least probably? Either way no one says anything
The facility stuff plays out easily enough, Pax wakes up and is really only happy to see Poloma and Nate, Poloma makes a joke about how she’s fine because “apparently only one of us is smart enough to duck” Poloma takes the “actually them being vampires makes this whole thing make sense” and after a little convincing Pax takes the “...okay” option
The tour is...cold to say the least, Pax doesn’t hold back with the criticisms of Rebecca ,the secrets she’s kept from them, and how she’s made sure to put her work before her children, Poloma says nothing
The reveal about their blood is tense to say the least but they both agree to do the tests
Both of them stop outside of their lis doors though on different mornings
Once they’re back at work, the twins, Nate and Mason all head back to the hospital to scope out the lab
They rotate whose apartment they stay at which is fine with the twins since no matter where they stay at least they each get their own bedroom
Also somewhere in here Felix reveals that it was UB at the warehouse that night and a very vindicated Poloma gets $50 off of Pax and tells him “this is what happens when you doubt me”
Pax and Nate get to have breakfast together, Mason and Poloma get to check on the thralls
They’re at Poloma’s apartment when the attack happens, of course they have their little talk with Rebecca (still just as cold as their every other interaction mostly thanks to Pax) and they both still get moments with their lis since they get their own rooms, how the actual confrontation goes is a little hazy for me since I’m bad at planning big action sequences like that but uh...more thralls probably?
Anyway the twins end up caught
Before the transfusion Poloma just rips Murphy and his plan to shreds because this asshole went through the trouble of kidnapping them and isn’t even sure his plan will work and she’s not at all impressed
The transfusion is rougher on Pax and that leaves Poloma to get them both the fuck out of there (she manages to loosen the buckle with a pen) and more or less has to help heave her brother out into the room where UB finds them
Murphy bites Poloma on the neck
They still end up catching Murphy though by tripping him thanks to both of the twins and then they both pass out (Poloma from obvious blood loss and Pax from exhaustion)
The rest plays out like this, the twins are kept in the same room, Pax heals up faster since he didn’t have to deal with the extra burden of blood loss so they’re playing a card game on Poloma’s bed when Rebecca and UB come to visit, Pax ends up in the hallway talking to Nate while Poloma gets to talk to Mason
Now for Book Two!
Both of the twins have nightmares about what happened, Poloma’s revolve around the bite while Pax revolves around his inability to help his sister both during the fight and the transfusion
The twins talk to the Captain together, both of them reassuring him in their own way that they know they still work for him (Poloma picks the “surely more help is a good thing” while Pax is just like “yes sir”)
They drive separately to the warehouse since the weather is nice and Pax is just itching to drive his motorcycle
More coldness from Pax upon seeing Rebecca again (the fact that she hasn’t seen them at all in the last two months not helping the situation), while Poloma at least tries to be a little friendly by thanking her for giving Adam the dmb
Pax doesn’t approve but at least he keeps his mouth shut
Poloma ends up having to leave first since she gets a text from Verda about some test results pertaining to a case, Pax leaves some time later after getting a text from Tina about work as well
Pax doesn’t like that there’s a carnival in town without a license while Poloma is a little excited about it and the sense of normalcy it brings
Pax stays at the station with Verda while Poloma goes out with Tina to the bakery for a late breakfast
Both twins get to walk home with their lis, though its Pax and Nate that discover the sick supernatural
That means Pax also has to deal with Bobby
Meanwhile Poloma and Mason are interrupted by phone calls about what happened at the same time, Poloma asks “what are the odds that both of us getting called at the same time is a good thing”
Everyone gets updated at the facility, Poloma and Pax both expressing to Nate that while they want to protect everyone, Pax isn’t sure how to do that against a disease, while Poloma says that whatever this is she’s sure they can figure it out
Pax finds Ub outside of the station later and while he doesn’t shy away from talking to the Mayor he also doesn’t make any sort of greeting
Poloma is waiting inside the station for Pax (and her coffee) and bemoans the fact that ever since the attack, Douglas only seems to listen to Pax now
Poloma is the one drawn away by the phone call, while Pax leaves to grab some papers from her office while she’s doing that, when they both return she is the one to threaten Mason with a fire extinguisher when he goes to light his cigarette
Both of the twins are happy to see Verda’s family and when little Cara asks to sit on Nate’s shoulders, Poloma elbows Pax and just grins making him roll his eyes
But he absolutely thinks that’s adorable as fuck okay he just doesn’t need his sister’s teasing
While Pax is being all heart eyes, Poloma is the one that connects the carnival and the illness
Poloma finally gets in a witty remark with the whole “if you need a big car you’re just compensating” line
She and Mason along with Nate and Pax are all going to the carnival tonight though not at the same time, Nate and Pax leave first in an agency suv while Poloma and Mason leave about fifteen minutes later
Pax and Nate go for the carousel first and then head to the games (Pax gives the rabbit to Nate) while Poloma and Mason go the fortune teller and then the carousel, Adam tells Poloma and Mason that Pax and Nate are going for the house of  mirrors first so they need to pick one more attraction before heading there themselves so they go to the games as well
Since their radios cut out when they go in, Pax and Nate have no way to warn Poloma and Mason about what happened to them before they go in themselves and subsequently cause their own radios to stop working
The twins head home together with Poloma driving after that whole post carnival talk, after she drops off Pax he runs into Douglas and when she gets home herself she runs into Bobby. Pax lets Douglas stay with him for a bit and he ends up seeing Falk and his friends first so he calls Nate first
Poloma’s call to Mason is followed only a few minutes later (which I’m sure went over real well with Adam)
So both Bobby and Douglas end up at the warehouse and while both of the twins are willing to talk about Douglas and why he’s dressed like Pax, both are very obviously more hesitant to talk about Bobby. Pax tries to give Poloma an out simply stating that Bobby is a real fucking annoying reporter but Poloma admits that he’s her ex, thinking that it’s best to get that awkwardness out of the way not that she divulges any more details than that
The twins compare notes about how the attacks happened before each is driven home by their respective li
Poloma and Mason bang
The twins decided to split the difference between fight training and research, Poloma gets research in the morning with Adam and Nate while at the same time Pax gets fight training with Mason and Felix, in the afternoon they switch so Pax gets his moment with Nate in the library while Poloma gets her moment with Mason in the training room
Pax goes to the lab to find Verda and sabotages his work while Poloma goes to find Tina in the backroom and encourages her to find the truth
When they find out about the maa-alused, Poloma suggests that she’s the best person to go speak with them with both Mason and Pax agreeing with her (Pax has a line here about how if his sister says she can do something, he trusts that she will period)
Pax stays at the warehouse with the other three ub members while Poloma and Mason go the carnival and both agree to stay the night afterward and have been given their own rooms
They both also get their moments with their lis in the night after having nightmares
Felix is sent to hang out with the twins but after seeing that Pax really does want to just do work, picks to hang out in Poloma’s office and they proceed to make paper airplanes for hours and the rule that they’re not allowed to work together alone is born
Since Poloma was sent to talk to Falk, he appears in her mirror
Everything at the facility goes down easily enough with both twins impressed by not only UB’s tiers but their own as well. Pax goes for the more aggressive route when they talk with Rebecca about Rook but Poloma cuts in to be more sympathetic when Rebecca tells them that she didn’t look into his death
Back at the warehouse, sitting around with UB just shooting the shit is the first time that the twins really feel like they’re apart of this little family
So of course the subject of Rebecca and their own family is brought up, Poloma fields these questions saying that she’s sure working together will only bring them closer together, Pax rolls his eyes so damn hard its a miracle they stay in his head but at least he knows when to keep his mouth shut (I swear one day they’ll tell UB about how Rebecca abandoned them as children but not today)
Poloma diffuses the situation when Falk and his friends burst into the warehouse, Pax was super ready to fight them
After they visit the burned down carnival, they both get to walk back to their vehicles Pax with Adam and Poloma with Felix
Pax isn’t impressed by Unit Alpha but Poloma loves them instantly
Pax gets the call from Verda and when he tells Pax that Tina has recently gotten into some interesting books, Pax knows that this was Poloma’s doing and oh man is she gonna get an earful later when they aren’t near the facility or anyone that works for the Agency
The twins, Nate, and Mason all go to the sewers, Poloma uses her deductive powers to find the tunnel that the trappers are down in time for Pax who uses a map he downloads to his phone to confirm she’s right (she bemoans the fact that she should have bet money on it, now she’s out like $50)
For the actual fight, Pax fights while Poloma out smarts the leader and the twins work together with Nate to successfully rescue Sanja, Mason ends up hurt
Pax is understandably uhm...tense when they bring up that the Trappers knew who he and Poloma were because of their blood test results (and really how the fuck did they get a hold of those Rebecca hmmmmm) and specifically says that they don’t need her help especially since they’re part of UB now. Poloma doesn’t say anything but at least gives her brother a halfhearted glare
Falk signs the treaty, Pax and Poloma are attacked by the trappers outside of the facility but they deduce and science their way out of that
They run into Tina and Verda’s family at the carnival and Pax is instantly suspicious of what Tina and Poloma are talking about when Tina pulls her away (because of everything he might have forgotten to chew his sister out for spilling the beans)
Pax runs into Douglas while Poloma runs into Bobby, both are equally disturbed for different reasons after their encounters
Both end the chapter getting their moment with their lis!

Waking up slow
The Wayhaven Chronicles
Adam du Mortain x female Detective (in the future)
Detective Kat Kingston faces a murder, Unit Bravo and her mother. (Not always sticking with the canon)
Chapter 3: First they have a moment, then they have a fight.
AO3 link
Chapter 1 / 2
----
His scent lingered on her skin.
Almost undetectable, Kat noticed a hint of citrus and something else, a bit like frost on a clear day.
Alluring.
Kat bit her lip, rubbed her hands together and evaded Adam’s glance. Always so intense, always so unreadable. A blush spread on her face, thankfully less noticeable due to cover of darkness. Being alone with him, tied her stomach in knots nonetheless. With her wobbly legs, Kat longed for a nice, extended night of rest, and to forget about her life for a while.
She pulled her own jacket a bit tighter around her.
No one had ever given her a coat or any item of clothing, not even a scarf. Considering her stature, it never occurred to her someone might do.
Kat inhaled some of the cold air. It helped her calm down and lifted the fog on her thoughts. “Thank you.”
“Hm?” He blinked, seemingly suddenly aware that they still faced each other.
“For your coat. It is pretty cold.”
“Yes.”
Kat didn’t doubt her own intelligence, but she noticed a certain lack of decency and cleverness while standing close to Adam. Not to mention stumbling over her own words. Neither Felix nor Nate awoke such insecurities. Even Mason offered the comfort of silence and an uncaring attitude, with Adam things turned complicated.
He turned away, but Kat was sure that she’d noticed a bit of red sitting on Adam’s cheeks. Maybe a trick of the light, maybe wishful thinking.
She tucked her hair beneath her ear and fumbled with her bag.
“Do you want the radio back? For Government reasons?”
Adam shook his head. “No, keep it.”
Kat put it back and nodded. “Well, time to head home then.”
The rest of Unit Bravo had already left a bit ago, burdening Adam with the deed of getting her home safely. As usual, they kept things from her. It’d been more obvious tonight, but every question went unanswered. Why the sudden and frantic behaviour? Why did they look so surprised after walking around for two hours? Something had been in the air, lurking in the shadows and they didn’t dare to involve her.
“I’ll take you.”
“You don’t need …” “Yes, I need to.”
“Do I have a choice.” Adam shook his head, but smiled faintly. “Right now? No.”
They got to her car, which she’d parked a few streets away. Adam appeared tense, every muscle strained, always ready to jump at an unseen enemy. His eyes darted around, as if he waited for an attack. Kat decided to not bother herself with any more questions tonight.
He raised his brows, forming creases on his forehead. “You need a better ride.” “Well, Wayhaven’s budget is limited and I still have student loans to pay back and monthly rent.”
Adam tilted his head. “Of course. I didn’t mean to offend you.”
“You didn’t.”
He did. Not everyone lived on some huge government payment and drove through town in a SUV.
Adam crammed himself behind the wheel, not caring about a discussion about who’d drive. Kat was too tired to argue and just went with it. Adam’s head met the roof and he’d to bent his back in an uncomfortable position. He managed to start the car though. Huge success on his part.
Thankfully he didn’t mention her small plush-toy, dangling from the driving mirror. A dragon that she’d won on some Renaissance faire a few years ago, while rescuing a princess from a tower.
The drive seemed silent. Kat’s hand hovered in front of her radio for a bit, but she assumed that Adam wasn’t too keen on music, Especially with her taste preferring female-lead bands and solo artists. Instead she looked out of her side window, watching her peaceful hometown passing by. Kat felt dreadful. Such a serene scene, so many happy, innocent people all depending on her.
No pressure.
Kat rested her head against the window, wallowing in self-pity and ignored sitting so close to Adam. His scent still surrounded her and would be left in here and she wondered how she’d also deal with that. Maybe she needed to buy a magic tree in the morning.
An exemplar of the newspaper, which had led to this night of patrolling, waited on the backseat. Kat had read it a few times, experiencing a mixture of frustration and anger and hurt. Somehow Bobby managed to find every soft spot of her professional life and exploited them. Kat didn’t know better back in college and denied any signs of warnings, but he’d used the same tactics back then.
Manipulations, putting her down, making her feel small, useless. Years later, she still couldn’t escape her doubts.
Kat pointed at the apartment complex, rather different from all those small houses on the outskirts. “This is mine.”
Both got out of her car and his clothing appeared a bit ruffled.
Kat looked at her feet. “Goodnight, Agent du Mortain.” “Goodnight, Detective Kingston.” His eyes lingered on her mouth for a few moments and Kat turned around to open her door.
Adam still looked at her, as she entered her flat.
Oh.
Kat slumped down on her chair. She’d always thought of adopting a cat or two. It’d be nice to come home to someone, a warm, fuzzy presence at her side. Maybe later this year, after everything here was finished. A quick, hot shower and a huge towel improved her mood and Kat managed to read a few pages of her novel, before finding her eyes too tired and her mind wandering to Adam again.
Checking her phone, she saw two missed calls from Tina and one message from Bobby.
She ignored the latter and wrote her friend.
Long night. Going to bed. See you in the morning <3
----
“UGH.” Kat stormed down the stairs.
Verda gently closed a file that he’d been reading. “Bad day?” “Bad teammate…” Kat took a seat right next to him, remembering Kate’s tears and Tina’s reaction to seeing Garret’s mother again. “Bad month.”
“You’re welcome here, Kat.” He patted at the empty chair beside him.
Solomon Verda appeared rather polished and neat and far too elegant for a cellar lab like this. He’d be more at home in some stylish FBI headquarters or a tv-show. Verda had been a role-model for her wardrobe since becoming a Detective and his warm smile soothed her hurt feelings.
She’d also spend some nice family dinners with him, his husband and their two adorable children, so their bond went deeper than just a work friendship.
“So?”
“I’m starting to believe that working for the Government somehow steals your humanity.”
“Don’t be too hard on them.” Verda touched her hand. “Or your mother. We can’t imagine what they have to deal with on a daily basis.”
“You’re right.” Sighing, Kat let her head sink against Verda’s desk. “But … just … ugh.”
“Glad we can talk without real words.” “Ugh is a real word.” “You sure?”
“Pretty sure.”
“The little ones use it a lot and they’re not even in school yet.”
“See.” Kat smirked and sat up straighter.
Adam du Mortain grated on her nerves and evoked raw emotions beneath her ribs. With his lack of empathy and feelings, how did he manage to go through the day? Kat was sure that they’d been moments between them. Minutes of him acting like a human, of him being shy, awkward. Just last night, he’d offered her his coat and drove her home and made sure that she got back in one piece.
Why did he have to stumble into her life? There was enough on her plate already and too many burdens. With all of Kat’s conflicting emotions, old friend depression knocked on her door. She already felt a numbness waiting behind her eyes, ready to suck all the joy out of her life again.
Sensing that something was off, her friend tapped a finger against his chin. “Hm, do you remember our budget cuts last year? Getting rid of the really nice coffee station and our lab security cams?” “Yes, I do.” She furrowed her brow. “Why?”
“Because without a security cam.” He spun around, quickly rummaged through some drawers and emerged with a flask. “We can do that.”
“Oh, Solomon, we’re still on a job.”
“It’ll be alright. Husband got it for my birthday. It’s filled with a tasty non alcoholic cider and won’t dull our senses, but sometimes you just have to take a sip, you know.. for the taste.”
“For the flavour!” Laughing, Kat put an arm around him and they shared a non -alcoholic drink in private. The cider tasted sweet and sour and absolutely perfect.
“Your husband has good taste.” “I know.” Verda’s soft expression spoke of love and loyalty and Kat couldn’t help but feel a tiny sting of envy. Not that she granted such an abhorrent too much room in her thoughts, because there was also genuine happiness for him in her mind.
“Detective Kingston?” Nate appeared through the doors with Adam trailing behind him, cutting a sweet moment short. The later held his arms in front of his chest and wore a stony mask. His green eyes focussed on where Kat’s and Verda’s shoulders touched and his expression turned even sourer.
“We’ve come to apologize for our behaviour. We’ve acted out of line and we understand your frustration with our behaviour.”
Kat doubted that Adam had agreed to this plan or felt remorse, but she stood up and walked towards them. “I don’t think that this is necessary.” Adam nodded. “I agree with Detective Kingston.”
Kat narrowed her eyes and meet his gaze. “Well, we agree then.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“Hm!”
Nate’s smile didn’t waver. “Great. So … we can talk about some lab results then?”
Verda broke the awkwardness. “We can.”

Astronomical - Wayhaven SecretSanta 2018
Hei, people!
So, here on Brazil it’s already 25 of December, so I’m posting my gift to @dae-kalina. I truly, truly hope that you like it! I thanks @otomefandomevents for the oportunity to participate on the event! S2
The story and a quick sketch are under the line ;) Probably I didn’t get everything right and Felix and everyone are not exactly canon, sorry for it D: Also, I hope you like the Detective created for this story :)
Astronomical
I’m drawn to the unknown where shadows hide
A slave to the powers that magnetize
There’s something inside of me I can’t fight
Forces of gravity taking me, taking me
Weightlessness forsaking me
Oh, this pull is astronomical
Oh, this pull is astronomical
 (Svrcina – Astronomical)
Carefully he aimed the point of the paper airplane - he had been elated when the Detective showed him how to make one -, and then let it go with a soft impulse. The piece went softly through the air and landed right in the middle of the report the Detective was reading. Bull’s eye, he though with a grin.
“Felix…” she said, her voice naturally low, a subtly tenor and raspy tone to it. He liked her voice as much as he liked her tempting smell.
Then she raised her head, one of the thick dark eyebrows raising until it disappeared behind the black fringe. Her blue Native-American eyes fixed on him with a slightly reproaching look.
“I really need to finish with these papers.”
“Workaholic.” The vampire rebutted and was rewarded with a grin from the human.
“Totally true and with pride.” She answered with a wink, turning her attention to the reports after putting the paper airplane on the side, carefully.
Felix deflated when she didn’t unfold the airplane, and consequently didn’t read his invite to go to the warehouse after she finished. He really wanted to spend some time with her without the barest talk or presence of work distracting the Detective from him.
And he was boooooored.
The sound of cellos invaded the room, a tune Felix immediately recognized as the Detective’s ringtone. With a barely restrained sigh of frustration for being interrupted again, she attended the call.
“Detective Müller.”
“Where are you?” he caught Tina’s voice from the other side of the call, annoyed, with an undertone of sadness.
“Uuuh… What?” Felix laughed quietly with the very smart answer.
“My birthday on the bar, Jocelyn!” hiccups were audible. Felix couldn’t help but think that she was drunk, while mentally cursing that yep, his idea of spending time with Jocelyn wasn’t going to happen.
“Crap, Tina. It’s already this late? Sorry, I was working and didn’t see the time passing… I’m going, ten minutes!” Jocelyn rose and put her gym-bag on the desk.
“You better.” Tina muttered on the other side and the call ended.
“Crapcrapcrap…” Jocelyn muttered all the time while almost literally throwing her things on the bag. Felix rose and orbited the room, feeling a little left aside, but still glad that at least something was able to make Jocelyn stop working and have some fun. He preferred if said fun was with him, but at least it was with her best friend.
He followed her outside the Police Station, grinning with how much she was cursing for having forgot the time – she wasn’t someone that cursed on a constant basis –, and waited for the Detective to enter the car.
“What are you doing there?” she asked before he could leave, brows furrowed, the glass window lowered.
“I’ll go back to the warehouse.” He smiled, pointing a thumb over his shoulder.
“What?! No! You’re coming with me to the party! Please, Felix, don’t let me suffer alone the Drunk Tina and bar party!” Jocelyn let her ‘drama queen’ side surface, extending her hands through the window to him and making an exaggerated face. Felix laughed both for her actuation and for seeing the side so rarely exposed. Unlike Ava, the human wasn’t serious and workaholic 25/7, more like 22/7, but was still phobic of social gatherings.
He shouldn’t. He really, really shouldn’t. Ava had made pretty clear along the months since they had established themselves on Wayhaven to keep their public appearances to a minimum, but… More time with Jocelyn. And she was pretty good at drama queen act.
“All right, all right, I’ll rescue you from social life!” He bowed mocking briefly before entering the old silverback, anxiety and happiness gnawing at his insides: more time with Jocelyn. Yes.
She turned to him while starting the car, a subtly smile on her face.
“Thanks, Felix. I love Tina, but I don’t get all the necessity of bars.”
“The alcohol?” He grinned and she barked a laugh, guiding the vehicle.
“Besides that. But thanks.” She focused on the street, still smiling, and Felix wanted to take the hand resting on the gear shift, wanted to be closer still to her. The only thing that stopped him was the knowledge that she needed to focus on driving, at least for the time.
The bar hadn’t changed since the first time he had entered the place. It was a little more packed, Tina and some of the volunteers from the station playing pool – all of them looking and smelling extremely drunk – with both Verda and his husband acting like the sober friends, keeping an eye on the officer and smiling in an almost patronizing way.
“Jooocelyn!!!” Tina shrieked in delight when she saw the Detective, and Felix couldn’t help but laugh when the woman hugged tightly her best friend, while Jocelyn stiffened like if she didn’t know how to act to the touch. She probably didn’t; Felix had caught on since meeting her that the Detective wasn’t the keenest person on physical contact. “You came!”
“Of course I came. Sorry for being late.” Jocelyn at last hugged back in an awkward way, smiling softly; the vampire felt his insides go mush at the tender moment between the two friends. All right, he wasn’t alone with Jocelyn, but for seeing that… Totally worth it, getting to see glimpses of all the facets of the Detective.
“Nah. You are responsible, I get it…” Tina let go of her and saw him. “Ooooh, Felix! Hi!” Then she got on the toes to whisper on the Detective’s ear. Or try. All that alcohol had seriously messed up with the ability. Felix would’ve heard it even if he wasn’t a vampire, he was sure of it. “Why you didn’t tell me he was with you? I know how you die to be alone together… I wouldn’t mind in this case…”
Felix let a big smile spread through his face, exhilaration filling him to the brim with the knowledge that he wasn’t the only one wanting time just the two of them. The way the Detective’s sun-kissed skin flushed and the light that appeared in her eyes when they turned to him gave Felix the will to jump with pure excitement and happiness.
Tina stepped back, a drunken grin on her lips, her eyes going between them.
“I’ll let you two… Talk.” With that genial way of putting whatever was on her mind in the word “talk”, she returned to the game, everyone on the pool table cheering her return.
Felix gave a large step, stopping in front of Jocelyn, barely two feet between then. The flush on her skin, a subtle red against the bronze, was still present, for his delight. Not even the fact that he needed to look up to get her eyes was able to lower his mood.
“Uh… Sorry about that…” She muttered, smiling at him, and Felix wanted to kiss her to show that there was nothing wrong with what had just happened.
“Only if you tell me more about wanting to spend some time alone.” He asked, sweetly, letting his body oscillate in her direction. Delight filled his being when the color on her cheeks got more intense and, subtle, her body also oscillated on his direction until his faces were mere centimeters apart.
“Well… How can I say…” Jocelyn started, stammering, and stopped to lick her bottom lip as if in need of time to think. Felix felt the urge to reach to her lips with his own and follow the path with his own tongue.
Before he could act as he desired, someone, extremely drunk, bumped against Jocelyn’s shoulder, almost sending her stumbling to the ground. Damn. So close, echoed in his mind while helping her to reclaim her balance with a hand on her arm.
They faced each other and suddenly she was laughing. For a second Felix just looked at her, confused, before being contaminated by the laugh.
“I think we aren’t in the best place to talk. Let’s see if we can find a table.” The Detective caught one of his wrists in her hand and guided him through the bar. Felix felt almost giddy with how his excitation spiked with the contact.
They found a table where they spent part of the night, mostly talking since Jocelyn hated the taste of alcohol. Just talking. Not about work – Police or Agency –, but about themselves and all in all just spending time together.
Felix loved each second of it and each smile that Jocelyn gave that was, in a way, only his. He wanted that to never end, to talk with her that way, only them, for more and more hours, so he almost pouted when Jocelyn took a look at her watch and said that she needed to return home.
“I’m accompanying you.” He jumped to his feet, following her leadership.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.” The human said in a soft way, extending her hand to his with color high on her cheeks. Felix hesitated, unsure if he was dreaming, but then took the offered hand and made the risk move of interlacing their fingers.
Jocelyn just smiled and tightened the hold before leading him one more time.
He should return to the warehouse. He really, really should. Ava had called two or three times already, asking where he was and ordered at the last call that Felix were to left Jocelyn at home and return.
In the end, however, the vampire went to the Detective’s apartment – still as messy as always –, sharing one of the few drinks Felix was able to consume without his super-senses getting too much in the way: cocoa, Jocelyn way, using toasted cocoa seeds, milk and honey. It was still almost too strong for his abilities, but the adaptations the human had made so he and Nat could drink it were enough to make it bearable and pleasurable in a way.
“You were saying something about a kid who hunted for faeries in the woods…” Felix started with a smirk, bringing back to the forefront the talk they were having in the car and putting the empty mug on a side table; unlike Jocelyn and Nat, he usually drank the cocoa almost all at once.
Jocelyn groaned while getting comfortable on the only sofa in the room, closing hre eyes.
“Do you really want to know about it?” the human asked and then drank, a thick cocoa mustache remaining as proof of the drink.
“Of course! A pocket sized Jocelyn, running around, dirty to the bones and looking at every little place trying to find magical beings? I can sense some fun histories.” Felix nudged one of her toes, next to him on the sofa, and throwed Jocelyn his best smile.
Some color appeared on her checks, but she smiled, subtly pushing her feet towards him. Felix let the smile slide from cheerful to flirty and his hand rose to her shin, enveloping the member. She briefly cleared her throat.
“I was a very bored kid. Mom was always out, and I loved exploring and everything fantasy. My nanny hated that I was able to easily run away from home even at six and enter the woods without a care.”
She drank some more, and Felix let his eyes follow the movement of her throat before zeroing on the renewed cocoa mustache, now mostly on her upper lip. He liked the fact that at home and with him she relaxed enough to don’t care if she appeared silly with that.
And when she licked the substance, Felix suddenly just wanted to have been the one to lick the cocoa off her mouth. Yup. Good idea. Amazing idea, indeed. He should put it in practice as soon as possible.
“… Then there was this one time that I had just read Narnia and was for some time a firm believer that Aslan and every other kind of talking animal lived on the forest. For two months I explored the woods, trying to find them.” She smiled, and the vampire noticed that he had zoned out a little bit, because he had no idea what she had said before Narnia, the book he had saw Nat reading but never himself had he at least opened the book, so the explanation went over his head.
“How usually pissed off was your nanny when you came back?” Felix asked to make the talking keep going, and lift up his hand from her shin, raising it under the soft and loose material of her pants, the point of his fingers gliding against her skin. Her breath stuttered, but she kept going.
“A lot. She tried to keep me on house arrest as punishment for a whole month.” She gave a tiny smile and brought the mug to her lips.
Felix felt as if the whole world went into some kind of freakish slow motion around him as his excitement sky rocketed, waiting for the cocoa mustache to appear. A tiny part of him prayed that nothing would interrupt them.
The vampire showed his best smile before briefly abusing his speed to quite literally pounce on the Detective. Jocelyn let a short lived high pitched scream escape in the time between he was sitting and then leanning above the human, his hand on her knee, the other on the armrest behind the woman, and just a few inches that were barely there separating their faces.
“Uhmmmm…”
He wanted to laugh with the intelligent word that came from Jocelyn’s throat, but he was too focused on how her skin flushed, how her lower lip lowered slightly and the how upper was smeared with cocoa, the way the pulse of her heartbeat went faster against his hand, to indulge in laugh.
“Hi there, beautiful.” Felix whispered before capturing the lip smeared with cocoa between his own. The sweetness of the drink along with Jocelyn’s taste and the fact that he was finally kissing her made him moan, closing his eyes and turning the contact into a firmer one.
Felix, for a moment, wanted to step back and scream in endless joy when he felt Jocelyn close her lips on his lower one, a soft bite following it. She leaned into him, her head getting into an angle and one of her hands tugging gently at the hair on the nape of his neck. He was all too happy to indulge in the way Jocelyn pulled him against her.
With the iron grip she kept on his hair, he didn’t mind when Jocelyn slightly withdrew, and raised his eyelids, smiling at her. Her light-blue eyes looked at him in a glazed way, almost as if not totally there.
“Wow.” She whispered; Felix just couldn’t resist her tempting smell and started nipping along her jaw. The contented sigh that escaped her lips as she gave him more space, leaning her head to the other side, made him groan.
With a sigh of his own and a nip slightly harsher, his hand slid from her knee to her waist, and then he could feel her heat along his body, her heartbeat all along him. A heady feeling filled Felix, Jocelyn’s surrounding him at all sides: smell, heat, touch, taste, sounds… He never wanted to leave.
“Felix” her voice had a demanding undertone, and suddenly Jocelyn’s used the grip on his hair to bring his mouth back to hers. This time she whimpered against him.
And then there was something vibrating angrily in one of his pockets, along with a high pitched song that made Felix jump. He found his phone and there it was: Ava. Probably to ask why he hadn’t return yet.
Felix looked at Jocelyn. Flushed skin, glazed eyes, swollen lips… A paradise’s vision that was a sin to just abandon. But if he didn’t answer the call, Ava would come searching for him.
He sighed and accepted the call.
“I’m fine, Jocelyn are fine, I’ll return by the morning, please let us and don’t interrupt again.” Felix didn’t wait an answer, what was probably some kind of suicide, and turned off the phone.
Jocelyn laughed.
“She will kill you for that.” The Detective touched his cheek and Felix leaned into the touch, smiling in a smug way.
“She can try, Nat won’t let her. Now, where were we?” The vampire didn’t wait for an answer: he just pounced again and kissed her.

Tanner's eyes narrow at the town sprawled before him. What was it called again? He pulls his phone out of his pocket, checking the text message he'd received a few days ago. Wayhaven.
It's small. Smaller than he'd expected. Tiny compared to New York, where he'd been living for the past six months. How much trouble could a goblin get up to in such a small town? More importantly, how hard could he be to find?
He rubs his hands together, shoulders rolling slightly as he retracts his wings before reaching into his backpack to pull his shirt back on. He's still buttoning it when he steps out of the woods surrounding the town, eyes scanning the street from the tree line.
Should be quick, he tells himself. Get in, find Helk - or whatever he's calling himself while in hiding - and get out. Three days, tops.
He pulls a cigarette from the pack in his bag and lights up as he steps out of the cover of the trees before shouldering the backpack again and heading down the street. Pulling his phone from his pocket again, he brings up the last known location of Helk - in an alley behind some place named Haley’s Bakery in the centre of town.
The fingers of his free hand flex before he curls them into a fist at his side as he walks along the street, ignoring the curious looks he’s getting from passers by. Small towns, he hates them. The kind where everyone knows each other and he sticks out like a sore thumb. It’s always harder than necessary for him to get information out of people in these places.
His fingers feel strange without his rings, fidgeting as his hand swings beside his hip while he walks, and as much as he wants to just get on with it and find the damn goblin that had stolen them, he knows that it’s probably wise to try and be friendly and hope that someone’s seen something strange. That would make his job infinitely easier.
It would seem he's had a stroke of luck as he stomps out his cigarette and pushes the door to the bakery open and a short, fair and friendly looking woman smiles over at him. Being good looking definitely has its advantages.
“Hey there, handsome. Take a seat and I’ll be right with you," she exclaims cheerily, and he glances around the homey room, obviously decorated to be more welcoming than functional. He feels as though he’s in this woman’s living room. He disregards her offer and instead walks over to lean against the counter, watching her carefully as she goes about what she’s doing. She startles a little when she turns and finds him standing there, and he shoots her a charming grin in an attempt to put her at ease.
“You’re not from around here, are you?” she asks, the tiniest hint of suspicion in her eyes as she looks him over. He lets out a light chuckle and shakes his head.
“That obvious, is it?”
She doesn’t answer, just leans against the counter opposite him and gives him a small smile, his easy going attitude towards her obviously convincing her that he’s harmless.
“What brings you to Wayhaven?” she asks conversationally, standing up straight again to wipe her hands off on the front of the apron she’s wearing.
“Just looking for a friend. I heard he might be in the area. Say, you might be able to help me. You haven’t seen any other obvious out of towners around in the last couple of days have you?”
She shakes her head and gives him a sympathetic smile. “No, sorry hun. You could head on to the police station and ask around there though. The detective and the team he works with seem to always know the ins and outs of what’s going on around here before anyone else.”
Tanner tenses, his fingers twitching as he tries to avoid letting them ball into fists again. So the rumours are true. He’d heard there was a group of agents working with a detective human liaison in some tiny nothing of a town. Not ideal, to have to avoid trained agents while he’s running his own unapproved mission. He can work around them, though. They don’t even know he’s here, after all.
“Where can I find the station, gorgeous?”
She almost giggles and he struggles for a moment to keep from laughing at how easily he managed to get her on side. Hopefully the law enforcement in this town are just as easy and he won’t ever have to risk encountering the agents in the town. She draws him a small map, unnecessary considering once he examines it he finds that the station is only a couple of blocks away. He rolls his eyes once he’s out of the bakery, screwing the map up into a ball and dumping it in a trash can as he heads for the station.
--
The man - or rather, boy - manning the front desk of the police station is so engrossed in the game he’s playing on his phone that he doesn’t even hear Tanner enter, and he leans against the counter watching him in amusement for a moment before clearing his throat loudly, making the boy jump. He hastily brushes long blonde hair out of his face and sits up straight, the phone landing loudly on the desk in front of him as he drops it.
“Uh, hello. How can I help you?”
He’s trying to appear professional, Tanner can tell. But the illusion has been shattered the second he’d stepped into the police station and he just smirks at him.
“I need to speak with the detective," he tries. Which detective, he doesn’t know. The boy nods and pushes himself away from the desk on his chair, leaning back to yell out across the station.
“Detective Langford!”
Tanner arches an eyebrow at the kid as he rolls himself back towards his desk and remains sitting up straight, the phone remaining untouched. Apparently this town is small enough for there to only be one detective, how tragic. Still, this detective must be a real hardass judging by the way the boy at the desk is pretending to be a real cop. Fantastic.
The man that steps out from an office in the back and comes to a stop behind the desk is not what Tanner had been expecting. Close to his own 6’3 height but scrawny - he doesn’t look as though he’d be much use in a fight. That might work to Tanner’s advantage before he finds what he came for and can take off, though.
“I’m Detective Langford, how can I help you?” He has a soft voice, and Tanner can’t imagine it sounding in any way authoritative and he wonders if that’s the reason one of the Agency’s units has also been assigned to Wayhaven. If there’s even infrequent supernatural activity in this tiny town he doesn’t imagine that this man would be equipped to handle it.
“I’m not sure, I’m looking for a friend of mine.”
The detective raises an eyebrow, instantly untrusting of the obvious stranger in front of him. “Your friend got a name?”
“I know him as Helk, but he may be going by something different while he’s in town.”
“Is he on the run from something?”
“Yeah.”
“What?”
“Me.” Tanner gives a small grin which the detective does not return. Langford studies him carefully for a moment as though trying to figure out how to proceed before shaking his head.
“Even with a name I don’t think I can help you. You’re the first newcomer I’ve seen here in months.”
“You lay eyes on every occasional visitor to your town, do you?”
“Yes. I do.”
Tanner nods and pushes off of the counter, straightening himself up. The boy at the desk looks between the two of them nervously, making him think that perhaps there’s more to this detective than meets the eye. Maybe he needs to tread a little more carefully for the remainder of his time in Wayhaven. Especially if he has an Agency unit to back him up.
“Right, well thanks anyway.” He turns to walk out of the station but Detective Langford calls out to him before he can step through the door.
“What’s your name? I’ll be sure to let any Helks that I come across know who’s looking for them.” He’s testing him, Tanner can tell. He realises that Helk doesn’t sound like a real name - definitely not a name that anyone in a town like this would consider normal anyway - and he’s probably trying to get a more honest answer out of him.
“Tanner Drake," he calls over his shoulder with a grin before stepping out of the street, the smile instantly fading and his eyes narrowing as he scans the street. This is going to be harder than he’d thought.
“Where the hell are you, you little shit?” he murmurs under his breath as he starts walking, realising that he’s going to have to find a place to stay. He didn’t want to stay in this town any longer than necessary, but it’s become obvious that it’s going to take longer than today to track Helk down, especially if he doesn’t have the assistance of the locals.
--
Morgan shoulders her way through the door of the common room, a lit cigarette already hanging between her lips as she assumes her usual position leaning against one of the side tables in there as they wait for Lucas.
She’s not terribly fond of the man, and she despises these weekly meetings they get dragged into with him. Especially when there’s nothing happening and they usually just consist of Lucas and Nate flirting.
She’s about to lose her patience and leave, forgoing the meeting altogether when finally the detective makes his appearance, and she pulls a face at the way Nate jumps to his feet like a love sick puppy and pulls him into a hug. As though they don’t see each other everyday.
“Can we get started? Some of us have better things to do," she snaps, crushing her cigarette in the ashtray sitting on the table she’s leaning on. Lucas rolls his eyes and reluctantly steps away from Nate. After going through all the usual rigmarole, revealing that there’s nothing interesting to report, as Morgan had expected, she’s pulling another cigarette from her pack and getting ready to head outside when Lucas calls everyone back. She rolls her eyes with a groan and crosses her arms across her chest, her unlit cigarette still hanging from between her lips.
“I met someone strange this morning.”
Not unusual. The town is full of strange as far as Morgan is concerned. It’s unusual that Lucas didn’t know this one though, she’d thought he knew just about everyone.
“Strange in what way?” Adam asks and Lucas shrugs slightly.
“I didn’t recognise him, he came into the station and said he was here looking for someone called Helk. He didn’t mention why.”
“Did you get a name?”
“Tanner Drake.”
Adam tenses instantly and obviously and Morgan frowns over at him. “You know him?”
Adam doesn’t answer, his focus on Lucas.
“Can you find out where he’s staying while he’s here and report back?”
Lucas nods with uncertainty, and Adam turns to face the rest of them, his brow furrowed even deeper than usual.
“Who is he, Adam?” Farah asks from where she’s sprawled on the couch, but Nate answers before Adam can say anything.
“Bounty hunter.”
“We need to find him and figure out what he’s doing here. If he has an assignment in Wayhaven then we should have been notified. The fact that we weren’t suggests that he’s here for personal reasons," Adam cuts in before Nate can say anymore, and Farah nods slowly, casting a worried glance in Morgan’s direction. Morgan just shrugs and pushes herself off of the table when it becomes apparent that the meeting is over, at least until Lucas can find out where Tanner is staying.
Adam storms through the door after Lucas, and Morgan jogs to catch up to him, plucking the cigarette from her mouth and twirling it between her fingers.
“This guy dangerous or something?” she asks, trying to make sense of Adam’s reaction to his name.
“Not unless you’re being hunted by him.”
“So why the unease?” She gestures to him as she asks, and he glances down at her with a heavy expression.
“He is infuriating. I hoped not to have to deal with him again.”
Morgan grins. Now it’s making sense, and she figures that anyone who can get on Adam’s nerves to such an extent has got to be an absolute riot. She finds herself mildly hopeful that she’ll get to meet him and at least have some real fun for once.
--
Adam stares at the door inside the hotel in obvious disdain, reluctant to knock. Nate stands patiently beside him, trying to keep the amusement from his face as he waits for Adam to do something. He knows that Adam and Tanner hadn’t gotten along the last time they’d crossed paths; Nate had had a front row seat to it. Tanner is antagonising and cocky and easily as arrogant and self assured as Adam and it had led to a number of less than friendly confrontations between the two of them. He knows that Adam is hoping that he’s on a personal mission and he’ll be able to send him packing rather than needing to work with him again.
Finally Adam knocks on the door, a grimace on his face, and then lets out a heavy sigh as he waits for an answer. They hear the chain being unhooked on the other side of the door before it pulls open, Tanner’s eyes widening in surprise before a grin slowly crosses his face.
“Adam!” he exclaims, pulling the door further open and stepping aside to let the two Agents inside.
“Commanding Agent du Mortain.” Adam corrects in nothing short of a grumble as they walk inside and Tanner closes the door behind him.
“Never thought I’d see you again.”
“The feeling was mutual, trust me.” Adam replies, throwing an already exhausted glance in Nate’s direction before clasping his hands behind his back. Tanner’s eyes dart towards Nate and a scowl crosses his face for a brief moment.
When they’d first met, Tanner had taken an instant dislike towards Nate and he still isn’t sure why, but he suspects that maybe they are simply too different.
“Why are you here, Drake?” Adam asks before they can veer too far off topic but Tanner just grins at him.
“I should’ve known it was you four working with the detective. What with how much this one loves humans.” He nods towards Nate though his gaze remains fixed on Adam, who shifts just barely under the attention.
“Why are you here?” Adam repeats his question and Tanner sighs and tuts with a shake of his head.
“I’m sure your detective friend told you that already.”
“You are hunting for someone you call Helk.”
“Right.”
“Who is Helk and why are you looking for them?”
“A goblin, and he stole from me. I want my things back.”
“So it is not an Agency assignment? If you are not on assignment you need to return to the nearest facility. You should-” Adam’s interrupted by his phone ringing, and he lets out an irritated sigh before moving to the other side of the room to answer it.
“What did he steal from you?” Nate asks, trying to fill the awkward silence that falls between them once Adam steps away. Tanner looks over at him, a bored expression on his face as though he’s already tired of interacting with him, and then raises his hands in front of him.
“My rings.”
“Are they important?”
“Does it matter? They’re mine.”
“Seems like a lot of trouble to go to if they can be easily replaced.”
“No one steals from me.” Tanner answers simply before looking away, indicating that their conversation is over and Nate knows better than to push it. He seems unassuming, even as tall and well built as he is. Tanner has a charming smile, a cheeky and playful personality for the most part, and it’s hard to imagine him taking anything or anyone seriously.
But Nate and Adam were both witness to what he is actually capable of when they worked with him years ago. He assisted them in finding a supernatural who refused to even meet with the agency to discuss signing any kind of treaty and by the time Adam had finally pulled Tanner off of him the supernatural had needed treatment in the agency’s medical facilities before he was in a position to discuss anything. Even Adam is subtly wary of the nephilim and Nate knows it.
He is not sure what would happen should Tanner ever have an opportunity to meet Morgan and Farah. He suspects that he would get along with Farah fairly well - they have a similar sense of humour and Farah would have no desire to push his buttons and rile him up. Morgan, though. Morgan and Tanner are too similar, and Nate doesn’t imagine that she would be willing to back down just because he warns her too.
He doesn’t suspect that Tanner would be willing to hurt someone technically on his side for no good reason… but he can’t be entirely sure that he’d bother to try and hold himself back either.
Adam appears beyond displeased when he comes back over to them, tucking his phone into the pocket of his coat and letting out a heavy sigh. He turns to Nate, disappointment written all over his face.
“That was Agent Langford. She has a job for him.”
“I’m right here, you know. You could just tell me directly.” Tanner pipes up, back to his usual cocky self now that Adam is there to buffer between him and Nate. Adam turns to him and speaks reluctantly.
“You are to come with us.”
“Back to the Warehouse?” Nate asks incredulously, to which Adam simply gives a short nod.
“To Morgan and Farah?”
“Yes.”
“I get to meet the girls this time, excellent.”
Tanner either doesn’t notice the tension in the air at the idea of him accompanying them to the Warehouse and meeting Farah and Morgan, or he simply doesn’t care about it. Knowing what Nate knows of the Nephilim, it’s probably the latter.
“It would seem so.” Adam answers reluctantly, then nods to the backpack sitting on the edge of the bed.
“Pack. We’ll wait for you outside.”
Tanner grins and grabs his backpack, hoisting it over one shoulder and gestures to the door. “I never unpacked, lead the way.”
Adam groans, not even bothering to hide his unhappiness with the situation before walking out of the hotel, followed closely by Tanner as Nate musters as much positivity as he can to follow behind the both of them.
Well. This will certainly be interesting.
