daisy, iris and snapdragon for the flowers 💐 x
Hi love, long time no see! How are ya?
daisy - what’s your best childhood memory?
For some reason I barely remember anything about my childhood, but I do remember one summer we went to the hills for a week with god camp (😭) and I remember playing in a little creek in the woods with my childhood best friends. No inhibitions, just the peace and quiet of nature 🫶🏻
iris - favourite 90s song?
How fucken dare you 😭😭 that’s like making me choose between my children if I had them. But probably either Grace by Jeff Buckley, Slide Away by Oasis or Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls or Black by Pearl Jam ugh I cannot choose
snapdragon - favourite mythical creature?
I love a good dragon! Magical creatures, very multifaceted. They come in all colours, sizes, small wings or big wings, horns or no horns. Defo dragons yes.

fic author interview
thank you for the tag @mirrorofliterature 🥰
How many works do you have on AO3?
technically 3, but one I'm listed as a co-author but I just did the art in it so I don't really feel comfortable counting it. so 2.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
37,317 words and counting!
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Well I only have two, so a sign in the midnight sky (297) and my floorplan for Grimmauld Place (24)
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes!! I try to respond to all the comments I get 💕 they always make my day
5. What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
hahaha well it's not finished yet so I'll skip over this question!
6. What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
like the above, ASITMS isn't finished yet so I don't have an answer haha, but I'll at least say that when it does end it'll probably be more happy than angsty (the angst ends will be for the rest of the series)
7. Do you write a cross-overs?
I haven't but I want to!!!!! I've got a HP Founders fic/Narnia crossover AU thing that's been sitting in my brain for ages and I definitely want to poke at one of these days (but I am trapped by ASITMS for the foreseeable future (i am okay with this i like it here))
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
nope! Everyone has been really lovely so far!!
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Not in ASITMS, it's very firmly in it's T rating (and if I do boost its rating later it'll be for some uh. violence. i've got planned 👀) but later in the Shrines series there might be some, if I feel like it. I've never written smut before though so I think I'd be worried about the quality of it haha
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope!
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No
12. Have you co-written a fic before?
Co-written, no (though I want to! one day!). But @sandervansunshine wrote an absolutely stunning little Jegulus fic based off an art I did and put me down as a co-author on that one! You can read it here
13. What's your all time favourite ship?
oh gosh, I don't know. Like maybe a tie between Drarry and Wolfstar? I go back to drarry a lot, and I think a good chunk of my favourite fics to re-read are drarry
14. What's a WIP that you want to finish but think you never will?
ohhhh well I don't know that I'll never finish it, because I do intend to write it one day, but I've got a time travel tomarry sitting in my WIP folder gathering dust, and it'll probably stay there until ASITMS is done at the very least, if not the whole shrines series.
15. What are your writing strengths?
uhhh oh no... probably descriptions? I feel like I'm pretty good with atmospheric stuff and having characters interaction with their environment. Oh and worldbuilding, I do love worldbuilding. 😅
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Dialogue. The absolute bane of my existence. I don't know how to talk in real life and I definitely don't know how to make a conversation sound normal. (Though I've been told I'm doing a decent job of it, so I guess hours of obsessive editing do pay off lmao)
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in fic?
I mean, I don't mind it in fics (I do appreciate having a translation in the notes though) and if it feels appropriate, I'd definitely put a few lines in my own fic, but I don't think I'd put like... a whole conversation in a different language. If someone's having a conversation in a different language and it's really long I'm more likely to either just say they're talking (if the POV character doesn't understand the language) or write it in English but in italics (if the POV does understand).
18. What's the first fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter!
19. What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?
I really really want to write a Dungeons & Dragon: Honor Among Thieves fic, for no other reason than I want to flex my forgotten realms knowledge somewhere other than my own campaigns 😂
20. What's your favourite fic that you've written?
Well it's a pretty easy answer when there's only one! a sign in the midnight sky. It's not only because it's my only one though, i'm really proud of the outline that I wrote (50k between two docs). The whole series is massive and honestly a bit of an insane project to take on, but there's so much time and research that went into it, and because it's 5 fics planned out from the very start there are threads I've already started laying down for the last fics and it's stupidly intricate, and I'm very excited to share the rest of it because I worked really hard on it!!!

Welcome! You've guessed it, I've finally reached 500+! Thank you guys so, so much. You have no idea how happy this makes me. I've decided to jump on the trend of doing milestone events, totally original I know but I thought it would be fun. There might be a prize involved, I'm not sure yet because there's not much I can give out but I want to make this as fun and enjoyable as possible! Should I make a server so we can work together? Let me know in the comments! This is not a requirement obviously for anyone who wants to participate but decides to drop out.

Fantasy — Modern & Medieval
Modern fantasy is usually described as a world hidden among the mundane, with examples like The Shadowhunters, Harry Potter, Narnia, and Pan's Labyrinth. This is your chance to explore that, to release hidden secrets or have reader fall down a rabbit hole metaphorically or literally.
Medieval fantasy should speak for itself. Knights, kings, princes, blacksmiths, dragon slayers, you name it, it exists here. Medieval fantasy in my opinion is far more creative and often difficult to touch since a lot of research is involved to make sure you're accurate to the times, but it's so much fun!
Monsterfuckers, this is your time to shine.

1. This contains NSFW Content, Minors DNI. I will be checking people and blocking accordingly.
2. This does not HAVE to be NSFW or Dark Content, it can be as angsty, light hearted, fluffy, etc as you want! TAG THINGS CORRECTLY.
3. Not every character slot has to be filled, however this is first come first serve! Species and everything else are NOT limited so multiple characters can be elves or princes or whatever. Kinks are your personal choice and must be tagged accordingly. Make sense? If you are familiar with DnD but don't know about any other fantasy type things, feel free to reference that! I will be making myself an exception to the first come first serve rule because I really wanna do Gladiator Izuku and I wanna see what another person comes up with for him too💀
4. Send me an ask if you would like to participate and write for this event! I will not accept participation requests in comments because they get lost. Just write out this in an Ask: (Occupation/Title & Species)!(Character) x (Occupation/Title & Species)!Reader + (Song)
Example: Elf Prince!Armin Arlert x Human Servant!Reader + All Of My Days - Tyler Brown Williams
Example: Blacksmith Orc!Izuku Midoriya x Siren Singer!Reader + Alone With You - Ashlee
5. Because I want people to be as creative as possible, I'll be limiting the human option. Please do your research because, as an example, there's a difference between the Fae and a fairy! If you wanna do something that isn't on the list, go for it! This is ✨Fantasy✨. If you're a bit lazy and don't wanna do a bunch of searching, feel free to ask me what they are.
6. THE PLAYLIST— Listen to the playlist and choose up to three songs for you to base your story off of. You can use the song as a whole, certain lyrics, etc for your prompt! I have plenty of options for sfw, nsfw, angst, fluff, etc! MAKE SURE YOU ADD LINKS TO THE SONGS YOU USED SOMEWHERE ON YOUR PIECE!
7. THE MASTERLIST— The masterlist is where your work will be listed!
8. When submitting, tag me and add the tag #dreamer's fantasy collaboration! I'm excited to see what you come up with!

A Year in Advance - 2021 goals/plan
Heya Everyone, I hope your day is going well!
I thought it was time to update everyone on my writing plan and goals for this year (2021).
Reach 50 completed Gif drabbles... I’m currently two off, and have exactly two gifs in my inbox, so hopefully this will be achieved soon.
Reach 100 completed Gif drabbles! I’m going to need your help for this one! I’m short approximately 50 gifs to achieve this, so please send me gifs of characters you’d like to see me write, it can be one I have already done as well, I’m happy to do something new for the same Gif. I am also working on writing something that’s actually drabble size, and not a small oneshot.
Keep sharing my work with you all! The series and one shots that have filled my google drive and have never been seen outside of my friend group. Also any new work that I do.
I am totally open to you sending me requests, head cannons, ideas, anything, even if you just want to chat!
If anyone is waiting on more of/another part of an already posted fic, or you spot a character/show you’d like to see past work on, please let me know, I can boost that up the priority list (aka remember that I was working on that, and switch WIP’s/post the next part if it’s done and I forgot to post it)  ((I have memory issues... I would appreciate reminders)).
So the shows, movies and characters I write for:
(Under the Cut)
(side note, if a character you want isn’t on here, feel free to message me and ask, I’m often happy to write other characters/rare/unpopular characters. I’ll keep updating this as I find new addictions/expand my character base).
Supernatural:
(I haven’t seen past season 10 yet, so only pre-10 characters/ story arcs please. The bf and I are watching through them, then I’m hoping to convince him to go halvsies with me on buying the last 5 on disc.)
Dean Winchester
Sam Winchester
Gabriel
Castiel
Crowley

So I finished reading Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
This isn’t so much a review, as an attempt to cement some of my thoughts, and to at least write something down, the better that I will not look back in a year and not be able to remember a thing of what I thought of HPMOR. But overall... that was quite a thing.
HPMOR is long. Longer (by word count, which isn’t a perfect method of judging this) than War and Peace, the normal benchmark for “really long books”. I don’t consider getting through it to be an accomplishment, in the sense of say, getting through Homestuck, though maybe that’s only because I have tried, and failed to do the latter several times. It may also be because the plot is, for all it’s time travel and scientific tangents, less complex than Homestuck. I do not expect it to stick in my mind the way the canonical books do. While I do not consider them to be high literature, the canonical Harry Potter books, in addition to being entirely an entirely decent story, had a certain... Depth, of sorts, to them. Some of this may come from the midi-chlorian effect; the workings of magic are never discussed greatly in the canonical books, but much of HPMOR Harry’s efforts are devoted to understanding magic from a scientific perspective. I think it is more likely that it is because HPMOR simply had a more limited scope.
HPMOR set out to be a puzzle, an encouragement of rational thought patterns, a demonstration of how they might be applied to great benefit. And it does this. While potential plot holes and inconsistencies exist, it does this fairly well on the whole. But there isn’t that much beneath it, at least not that I have seen. It’s a good enough story, and the way it chooses to fill in the unfinished coloring book of Rowling’s world creates a compellingly interesting universe, albeit not a pleasant one. It has some good humor at some parts (more on that later), many clever moments, and some moments that are, frankly, just plain awesome, though these often contribute to the monstrously overpowered being that Harry is. Both versions shared the core theme of (spoiler warning: the rest of this paragraph. If you’re interested, I’d really advise you to just read it so that you don’t have the dramatic tension reduced) Harry ultimately triumphing by virtue of who he is. Triumphing by being, as we would describe it, a better human being than his opponent. The difference is that in the canonical books, this is a much more theological process. By the final book, Rowling is pretty much bashing us over the head with a crucifix. I still maintain that, unless the hill you wish to die on is unmarried teen snogging, declaring Harry Potter as heresy for the simple fact that it includes magic is to foolishly ignore the veritable flood of Christian messaging the books contain. I thought I’d made a post about that, but apparently not, so I’ll divert myself to that briefly.
Spoilers for the whole canonical Harry Potter main series in the following paragraph:
The entire story is based on an innocent child who was permitted to live because of the intensely real power and protection offered by the selfless sacrifice of another to protect said child. So there, straight off the bat, right in the premise. And then in the 7th book, Harry does the exact same thing, but more so, and pretty much pulls an Aslan, “dying” willingly to protect others, but not by this being truly killed. And it’s not like the Christian messaging in Narnia is obscure. And at the end of the first Harry Potter book, Dumbledore, the most “good guy” character that the series has to offer goes off explaining how “to the well organized mind, death is but the next great adventure”. Then, in no particular order, having not done anything like a read through specifically looking out for these: the primacy of the soul over the physical, the specifically soul-corrupting nature of evil and killing, the power of redemption and forgiveness, the ultimate triumph of good over evil, the concept of powers that, while attainable, will damage your soul forever, and the existence of life after death. Anyway, back to the main matter.
HPMOR lacks any semblance of this depth (not that this is the deepest thing in the world mind), at least that I have been able to detect, and this makes it a lesser story to me.
The first ten or so chapters of HPMOR were pretty great as comedy. Harry constantly befuddling the wizarding world, and being befuddled by it, makes for some great laughs. Later on it undergoes a pretty significant tone change, and I had a very hard time adjusting to it, and enjoying the latter portion (which makes up most of the fic) for what it is. I did ultimately reach that point, but it was jarring.
This fic has some pretty obscure references. Have any of y’all read “Negima!?”? The author of this fic has. ( or at least, he’s watched some of the show.) It also had an offhanded reference to Madoka Magica, which is less obscure, but I still appreciate it.
HPMOR Harry just keeps on getting more and more powers. (potential spoilers ahead, less severe): It seems like every month he’s making some discovery of how to do something that the entire wizarding world “knows” is totally impossible. It makes a certain sense, in context, but it certainly does contribute to some Mary Sue-like feeling. But on the other hand, Harry routinely oversteps his cleverness, failing to think things through enough, missing obvious points that would have counter-indicated his action. And some of the consequences are rather severe, so I don’t knock too many points off for it. Harry is powerful, but he is also rather a child genius in this telling, and all things considered, most of his discoveries don’t seem too ridiculous.
I earlier mentioned that the world HPMOR painted was rather interesting. It (mostly) doesn’t directly contradict the wizarding world as portrayed in the common, but it does color in many of the blanks, and this author paints in dark colors. Wizarding britain, as portrayed in HPMOR, would be considered barbaric to most of the people reading this. Or perhaps it would merely be considered “medieval”. It certainly has some things going for it. It is portrayed as a place with relatively little history of institutional sexism, or racism amongst wizards. Even the stodgiest pure bloods find it silly to discriminate based on skin color. Wizarding Britain sees little wrong with homosexuality, and it is entirely un-taboo. But things get worse from there.
It is implied, or at least, I took away the message from my last reading some years ago, that the Wizarding power structure in the canonical books is... incompetent. That the benchmark of being a “fully qualified” witch or wizard does not in fact entail very much true competency, and many of the more powerful figures are somewhat dumb. HPMOR confirms this, and brings it into the light, offering more examples of just how useless most wizards are in matters non-magical. Wizarding Britain is controlled by an incompetent government, which is primarily controlled by one or several “Noble and Most Ancient House(s)”. The extent of Lucius Malfoy’s influence is brought up often in the canonical books, and the same is true here. This is a world where (minor spoiler for something before chapter 10-ish) a young noble raping a girl, and yes, girl is the proper noun here, repeatedly, and getting away with it indefinitely, is an open secret. Where this young noble’s security is secured by: a) the victim and her families’ fear of his familial power, b) memory charms, and c) a court system where the interests of the Noble Houses are often a primary concern.
Wizarding news is minimal, and it seems to primarily toe the ministry (which is to say, aristocratic) line, save for the Quibbler, which... on the whole, isn’t great news either. There is no particular concept of a fair trial at play in this world, especially if your crime was committed against a noble house. Less than three days investigation is considered enough to go from crime to a sentence of ten years in Azkaban. And then there’s Azkaban itself. For all it is a prominent feature in the books, and Dumbledore’s opposition to it is often mentioned, Azkaban doesn’t get much light shone on it in the canonical books. This is likely in part because it is such an incredibly, ridiculously cruel place that it becomes very difficult for many of us muggles to imagine it being an appropriate punishment for anyone. I won’t go into great detail, but there are very few crimes capable of causing enough pain that, even working from a perspective of vengeance, instead of justice or rehabilitation, it becomes very difficult to mathematically justify Azkaban.
To clarify, by mathematically justify, I mean, what percent of the pain a criminal inflicts by his misdeed can fairly be unleashed upon the criminal as punishment. Is a beating a proper punishment for beating someone? What about two beatings? Or three? At what point does the severity of the punishment become so much greater than that of the crime that it stops being sensible? If you slapped me, would I, absent any concerns about self defense or ensuring my future safety, be justified in immediately shooting you? Or boiling you? Or beating you to death? The murders who are so successful that we stop calling them murders and start calling them statesmen might have a shot at a mathematically (if not necessarily ethically) justifiable cell in Azkaban. For everyone else, it’s pretty difficult. And in both versions of the story, wizarding justice is NOT perfect. Innocent people go to Azkaban, and are exposed to this as well. Azkaban is pretty terrible, and most of the wizarding world just sort of... accepts it.
Anyway, I probably have more to say, but I really need to wrap this up. This probably wasn’t very coherent, so sorry about that.

Up Next for thelittlefanpire:
I’ve got a terrible habit of starting things and not finishing them...but I did write 12 fics(80k+) so far in 2k19, most of them are one shots and complete but there’s a few WIPs I’d like to wrap up and ideas that definitely need to be laid to rest before the fandom dies. #RIPTwilightWIPs. Most of these are titled. All of these probably have their own board on Pinterest and a moodboard in my drafts.
Here’s a neverending list of ideas that I would very much like to write, so...prompt me?! Help me fight through the writer’s block and publish these babies in some form! ilysm.

A Heart as Red as Paint by Jennifer Kropf is the second installment of The Winter Souls Series; a faith-based Christmas collection for teens, with characters from old holiday legends and folklore. "Deck the halls with bells and folly..." Helen Bell has changed since facing off with Mara Rouge in the Quarrel of Sword and Bone. But so has Winter. When a Timepiece crosses the intersect to give Helen a set of three warnings in the form of a puzzle, she's forced to re-enter the world she thought she might never see again to solve it before she meets a deadly end. But things are different in Winter. Things that were once proudly colourful have been painted red, and the Patrolman who swore to always be there for her has his own demons to face. Helen is forced to hide in plain sight by impersonating a Red Kingdom celebrity, all to follow the leads and solve the Timepiece's puzzle before she's taken and Winter's last Carrier of Truth is silenced forever. "Wow, I loved this book! This book was a magical twist between Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, and Spirited Away, yet somehow read as effortlessly original. It was gripping, fast paced, and full of action, yet not lacking in heart. High recommendation for young YA readers upwards." - USA Today Bestselling author Alice Ivinya "The Chronicles of Narnia meets Harry Potter. This magical Christian fantasy adventure totally hits the spot and gets everything right. It is a beautiful reminder of what is truly important in life." - USA Today Bestselling author Astrid V. Roman walked into the common room, took one look at Virgil, and rolled his eyes so hard it nearly hurt his head. Virgil simply stuck his tongue out in response.
He had told them he sat in odd places. It wasn’t on purpose. It just… happened. Like right now.
He had first walked into the living room and sat on the couch like a normal person, one elbow propped up on the arm of the couch with his legs sprawled out in front of him, scrolling lazily through his phone. Then his legs got cold, so he curled them up under himself. Then he just slowly leaned over the arm of the couch more and more until it was sticking into his stomach and he was on his phone upside-down, blood rushing to his head, legs sticking out behind him and taking up most of the cushions. Then that got uncomfortable and stopped up his nose, so he flipped over and arched his back over the side instead. But that didn’t work for long- so he slowly just melted off the couch until his head was tucked into his chest and his phone was resting on his ribs. His knees were bent over the edge of the couch, feet dangling over the seat.
“Honestly, Virge. I didn’t know you personified Thomas’ back problems.”
Logan glanced over from his chair and blinked in surprise at seeing Virgil’s shoes where his body should have been. “When did that happen?”
Virgil rolled out of his stance with a huff before either of them could admonish him any further. Logan looked to Roman, who shrugged.
“I just wanted seating for 1 on the couch, Quasimodo- Patton told me earlier that there’s a Harry Potter marathon coming on.”
Virgil perked up at that and glanced at the couch. “I’ll talk to my center of balance and see if we can work out a compromise- if I can watch, too.”
Roman nodded in agreement before flouncing onto the couch, propping his boots up on the coffee table and grabbing the remote. Virgil took up his post on the opposite side, sitting much more normally, to Logan’s relief.
After a short while, Roman paused in his channel-flipping, a sudden thought occurring to him. He grinned devilishly at Virgil, who glanced over and paled at the look on the creative side’s face.
“Hey Logan,” he drawled, “Did you know Virgil thought my closet door was a portal to Narnia?”
Virgil choked on his spit and his cheeks turned bright pink. Logan lowered his book and marked his page before looking up at Roman, interest piqued.
“What?”
“Wh- Roman!” Virgil protested.
“Yep!” Roman grinned, ignoring the flustered Side. “He thought any time I was daydreaming, I was off in a world I had conjured up behind the door!”
Logan smiled slightly. Virgil sank into the couch cushions and covered his face with his hood.
“Go on- tell him what you thought his door was.”
“I am rather interested,” Logan added, glancing at Virgil, who looked like he wanted the living room furniture to swallow him whole. “Discussing our respective hypotheses as to what Thomas’ mind could hold would be quite enthralling. I have thought extensively about what can and cannot potentially occur here based on past observations, and I am curious as to what your own ideas are.”
“Oh... well...I, uh… I thought your closet was the door to a chemistry lab,” Virgil mumbled. “Or a spaceship. And I thought Patton’s was the door to a house- with a bunch of family photos and, like, children of his own or something.”
Logan laughed brightly; the other two jumped at such a rare noise. “Well! What I wouldn’t give to have access to my own chemistry laboratory. I might fall behind on Thomas’ scheduling if that ever happened. Alas, the only things behind my door- as impressive as it looks- are simply some old textbooks and extra clothes.”
“And a unicorn onesie,” Roman added. Virgil snickered.
Patton whirled into the room at that moment, a small tower of fresh chocolate chip cookies and three glasses of milk on a tray in his hands. He set it down on the coffee table and beamed at the other three. “Anybody got the munchies before this movie marathon?”
“Oh my god, Pat, you’re the best,” Virgil gasped, lurching forward to grab a cookie. Roman eagerly snatched one off the plate and grinned up at the fatherly figure.
“Hey, Patton, did you know-”
Roman was cut off when a huge CRASH! came from the hallway to their bedrooms, followed by a high-pitched shriek and bubbly laughter. Patton jerked upright and turned towards the noise.
“-Hold that thought for just a jiffy, Roman- KIDS! Are you alright?!-and what have I told you two about roughhousing inside?!” Patton bolted down the hall, cookies forgotten.
“Oh, no- it’s Dad- RUN!”
They heard a squeal, the sounds of scurrying footsteps, and the slam of a heavy door.
The three sides in the living room just stared at each other.
“...What the-”
A/N:...i think i’m hilarious, honestly

Detour: Magnum Opuses
Though this blog is about philosophy and theology (roughly 500 words at a time), I’m taking a detour here for personal reasons. Feel free to skip this post if you’d like, because today I’m going to talk about a realization I had regarding Writing.
I appear to have two types of work when it comes to my writing. One, which I’m not sure what to call, consists of stories or topics I want to get done and “out to be read.” My book on Creativity, Fred the Monkey’s Murder Mystery Novel, my response to Bertrand Russell, and How to Win NaNoWriMo Every Time consist of these types of books. Heck even this blog falls into this first category. I wrote them to get them finished so people could read them and, hopefully, get something out of them.
On the other hand I have a category I’d call “Magnum Opuses.”
Traditionally a Magnum Opus (In Latin Opus Magnum) is an author or artist’s greatest work. The one standout piece that defines their career or craft. Stephen King refers to his Dark Tower series as his Magnum Opus. Some would probably consider either Narnia or Mere Christianity as CS Lewis’s Magnum Opus (though I would hold that it is The Great Divorce). Tolkien has The Lord of the Rings and Orwell has 1984.
The problem I have, and am discovering “have had for the last 18 years or so, at least,” is that I get caught up on ideas I think are so great they need to be my own Magnum Opus.
I started a novel in 2002. It is the story of a character named Ben, and I planned it to be a trilogy. It was not the first novel I ever started, I think, but it was the first I ever finished. Finished in the sense of a completed first draft, that is. Ben’s story was never completed in terms of being RELEASED.
I was terrified of releasing the book, because it was in my mind a Magnum Opus. It was an idea so dear to me that I knew as soon as I published it I would think of 100 ways to make it better. (Ironically now, with more experience, that number is more like 1000 ways.) But then it would be too late. So I simply did not publish it, or even complete a final draft.
18 years is a long time to hold back something because of what is essentially fear.
But in the past year I’ve finished a second Magnum Opus, a story I love and want to make perfect. I’ve also started a third. And what I’m coming to realize is that if I don’t just complete one of these types of “much more important to me than the other category” books, I’m never going to finish any of them.
(This post is really just a public version of me working this idea out on paper.)
My hope is knowing that the two categories exist will help. Also either I can’t have multiple Magnum Opuses or I totally can. Who says I can’t? But really, it isn’t ABOUT having a Magnum Opus. A Magnum Opus is to the artist what “World Series Game 7, Bottom of the 9th, two outs, bases loaded” is to a ball player. It’s the dream. It’s what you make-believe every pitch is when you’re practicing on the sandlot behind the school with a bunch of your friends. But how often does it happen? Almost never.
If we get so caught up in the dream of that Game 7 Bottom of the 9th then we will never hit the triples (and yes, the infield pop-outs) in all the other games. We won’t enjoy the walk-off homers because they weren’t/aren’t the one highlight that define our careers. We’ll never draw a walk, or strike out swinging, or nail that magical grand slam. Sometimes we’ll never even get off the bench and walk up to the plate.
18 years is enough. I don’t want it to turn into 20. I want this story to be done and released, and if five people read it and four of them hate it then so be it. I can’t keep it locked up anymore for the sake of dreams and wishes. Ben may never be the next Harry Potter, and that’s alright. It’s time to finish this thing and start figuring out the next Magnum Opus. Maybe, if I do, some book I write will actually turn into one in the end.

The Golden Compass Can’t Find its Soul
Tumblr media
In 2001 there was a little movie released, you may have heard of it...it was called Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It made a shit-ton of money, and spawned a still expanding franchise. As always, when the film industry makes a successful movie, everyone else tries to decipher the formula so that they can have a juggernaut too. In this case, the thought process was: “Harry Potter is based off of a children’s novel. If I make an adaptation of a children’s novel, I will also become more rich.”
Unfortunately for the financiers of Hollywood, none of these attempts to ride the Children’s Literature Film bandwagon was especially successful. The Narnia movies probably did the best, but even those didn’t make much of an impact. Most were total disasters, like the Series of Unfortunate Events movie, or the horrible slew of live-action Dr. Seuss movies. (Let’s never talk about those...) Unfortunately for me, one of these attempts was based on a book series very near and dear to me, His Dark Materials.

Your an amazing writer. What books have inspired you, what are your favorite books in general, and which books do you think are closest to your writing style?
God, thanks for the complement! I’m gushing and blushing and everything in between!😊
Hope these answer your questions lovely!
Books that inspire me is a long, broad and vast list that features a shit tone of genres. I don’t limit myself to genres, so I cant really think of a specific book that completely inspired me…oh wait, that’s a lie. The Alchamest. I picked it up with pretty low expectations, because the inner hipster in me didn’t want to believe Oprah when she said it was an incredible book. It was. This one isn’t a book, it’s a play, but it still a pretty fucking good one and that’s ‘All My Sons’ by Arthur Miller. That was my first real taste into the depths of writing outside of prose. I don’t think I’d have the courage to write scripts if it weren’t for that play.
As for favourites, here are a few: Vast majority of Billy Shakes (William Shakespeare, lol), The Harry Potter series, Chronicles of Narnia, Catcher in the Rye, Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Fault in our Stars, Eleanor and Park, most all gothic fiction (But my all time favourites are Picture of Dorian Grey and Frankenstein), Little Women, Anne of Greengables, Rebecca (READ THAT BOOK, LIKE HOLY SHIT), everything Murakami, it goes on and on and on. For someone that gets a lot of praise for portrayals of what real love is like, I don’t like romance books. I know a lot of the books there feature love, but I wouldn’t say love is the main theme in most all of them. See, I don’t want my writing to reflect a 'boy meets girl, fall in love off the bat’, sort of deal. I try my damnedest to write from reality, yeah, I know, my stories are as far from realistic as possible, but I do damn try. Prince Charming and Cinderella stories aren’t real, and yeah sure mine aren’t either, but I want people to have a hard time accepting that to be fact than believing the love I wrote to be fiction.
Books that inspire my writing voice are vast and wide. Voice and style are effectively something you have innately and also perfect and change and tune constantly throughout your life. The best way you do this is by comparing your style with other writers, so I’m going to answer your question by altering it, because that way I can answer it best I can 😂. Yeah I know, I bend the rules all the time!
Which writer’s do you compare and base your writing style on?
Wellllllllll, in short everyone lol, but mainly authors that write a lot of literary and general fiction, and authors that are decorative in their prose. Decorative, you may ask? Think people that describe the sun as, 'a phosphoric God suspended above us, one too bright for our minds to comprehend its herculean glow’, than say someone who would describe the sun as, 'a ball of gas, intimidating and powerful and of which we are in its total mercy’. Neither is a wrong way of describing something, and I use both pretty equally if I’ being honest, but I just like to be a bit more liberal with my word paintings is all, and that’s because the types of writers I read are also like that. Murakami is possibly my favourite author ever and his descriptions, though not as robust and fruity as 'the sun is a phosphoric God’, also is very descriptive in his prose. His sentences are quiet to the point but his use of language is so beautiful, it allows your mind to illustrate both the story he created and the one you interpreted, in equilibrium. He’s a genius.
I hope that answered your question and thank you once again for taking the time to appreciate my work. Ultimately I write for you, and to have you admire my craft makes it worth the hard work I put in it everyday. Thank you ❤️

Okay that does not seem like an appropriate habitat This all has so little to do with Christmas. https://external-preview.redd.it/uzUWdKH11awsRkfQFArl8KhcKQC5XiMMZrMYtMXxZG0.jpg?auto=webp&s=929d814cd06688484059aff9629a617d842b8da4 brain trauma and animal abuse, truly the real meaning of christmas uh or rather http://i.imgur.com/DFqlhuz.jpg Aladdin rubbing his lamp is just a metaphor for masturbation I bet his parents won't have any questions about the new tree in their yard whereas a kid playing hide the turtle and planting his ring seed is.... I have no idea. That's not really how mowing works. I miss when this movie was about bolgna and meatloaf, and made sense Those were good tims. *times What is he even doing she' s calling a divorce lawyer, right? Was he... not looking where he was going? And people got paid to write and make this too This scene feels like it's been going on for years. So he just has a grudge against this tree because he ran into it like a dumbass, right I can't remember when this scene wasn't happening this family is really half assing their christmas GAH! WELP did he just say "enter you" seriously kid, get a brain scan hahahah So... his dad's going to come back and find a tree already there "hey, THESE aren't our decorations" you are a nightmare made real I would have fragged this tree at a certain stage in my life. kid uh you really wanna be a tree ...Stages. It's the voice, isn't it. if you ddon't get that brain scan kid, you'll end up being a plant for life That and I have a thing for haughty, awful Seekers. It is. yes kid, go towards the light Yikes when does he  turn someone into a jack in the box? what is going on? murder suicide? hahahah "Uh, no further questions" wish for infinite wishes, duh He... wants Santa for his very own Kid No ...Oh. Well. could they not have hired an  actor with a real beard? Uh "belong to" He could have just wished directly for whatever dumb toys okaaaaay that was genuinely disturbing there stroking the gun like that Yeah ....What. What. what the? UH??? UGH, HE'S SQUATTING. So... if it's morning... wouldn't his parents have gotten up and found Santa trapped in that chair Wow. Ha santa might forgive him, but i will never forgive the director Agreed. I feel like I could have made a much better job of three wishes. Oh so it was alllllll a dreeeeaaaaam see, I said he he had a brain injury get a brain scan, now though I'm sure you would. continued hallucinations and altered sensory perceptions... this kid is bleeding into his brain Ha! Oh boy Hahahaha was this guy on the epstien jet too? OHH That face Killer?? And one more for the road! The Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly challenge post previously hosted by The Broke and Bookish and now hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl. You can follow along for each weekly post here. This week’s post was originally the top ten outrageous things I’ve done for the love of books. I couldn’t quite think of ten things so I modified it a little to top ten ways I know that I’m a book lover.
I’ve Lost Count of How Many Books I Own
I used to have a count of how many books I own but truly, I can’t even keep track anymore. The picture only shows my favorites – I have an entire closet practically stuffed to the brim with books. I just buy and buy and buy and get them as gifts and receive ARCs in the mail and its always growing and I love it.
I Own Multiple Copies of the Same Book
I have such an obsession with owning multiple editions of the same books! You can see I own multiple editions of various Leigh Bardugo books and I own about five copies of Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl. I love owning different covers and if a special edition is released for one of my favorite books? Forget it, its an instant buy. They just look so pretty on the shelf!
I Have Waited HOURS in Line to Meet My Favorite Authors
#gallery-0-4 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-4 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Not only have I waited hours in line to meet a particular author but I’ve spent hours of my life going to various book signings, book festivals and such to meet my favorite authors. I would be curious to add up all the hours I’ve spent doing it because I bet its a pretty astronomical amount, especially in the past nearly seven years I’ve been blogging about books! I love meeting authors, I love having signed editions on my shelves. I look at my shelves and think…wow, majority of those books are signed!
I Have 12 Book Related Tattoos
I actually had to stop and count for a moment and I was actually surprised – I have 20 tattoos total and I thought more of them were book related but twelve is still a LOT! I originally started with book related tattoos and I definitely want more but money definitely gets in the way of that haha. Tattoos aren’t cheap, they shouldn’t be (PSA – PAY FOR YOUR TATTOOS!) but I love the book related ones I DO have. I have six Harry Potter, one Vampire Academy, two Mortal Instruments, one Divergent, one Rusk University and one for my own book and I count that!
I Read Roughly 100-200 Books a Year
I LOVE to read and I want to read as many books as I can because there are so many books out there to read and I get major book FOMO when I hear people talking about a great book or series and I haven’t read it yet! When I’m writing, I definitely read less but I do still read a lot more than most people and I love it. I consume books. I wish I knew the amount of books I’ve read in my lifetime but its impossible to know but I’m sure its a ton. I’ve read 100 to 200 every year since 2012, when I started recording on GoodReads. I was 24. Who knows how many I read before…
I Can Read a Book in a Matter of Hours
I have always been able to read really fast and I think its less a talent to brag about and more because I just love to read, I love diving into an amazing story and I love getting to the end to find out what happens and that’s why I read fast. When I’m reading a book I do not like, I cannot read very fast. It’ll take me anywhere from days to weeks to months to finish it, if I even decide to finish it. I read fast because I love the book and I want to know what happens!
Most of the Movies I Own Are Based Off of Books
I have a small four shelf bookcase for my movie collection, which is a fairly decent size, and its mostly movies that are based on books. Before I Fall, City of Bones, Divergent, The Darkest Minds, Chronicles of Narnia, The 5th Wave, The Hate U Give, Harry Potter (obviously), The Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, If I Stay, Howl’s Moving Castle…I mean, I could go on and on. Even all the Marvel movies I own are based off of comic books. I really don’t own many books NOT based off of books that I love!
I Write Books – I’ve Written 8 and a Half Novels
I love books so much that I write them – or I do the best I can to write them. I’ve been writing full novels since I was about 16 years old; Cast A Spell was the first one and it was god awful and will never see the light of day, so don’t ask. But since then I’ve written eight – three of which were published – and I’m currently working on number nine. I love the stories I get to delve into as a reader and I love creating those kinds of worlds for other readers.
The Bookstore is My Happy Place
I have my happy places – Trader Sam’s. Angel Stadium. Disneyland. Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood. But my ultimate happy place is a bookstore. I walk into a bookstore and I feel like there are so many possibilities. Sometimes I walk in, super happy because I know exactly what I want and its exciting to finally get my hands on it. Sometimes I’m just happy because I don’t know what I want and I’m excited to see what I end up with before I leave.
Bonus – I’ve Attended Movie Premieres for Books I Love!
I don’t do it as much as I used to because I’m old and tired LOL but mostly because I don’t hear about premieres as much as I used to and I don’t really have the friend group to do that with anymore but I used to go to premieres all the time! I was at the red carpet premieres for City of Bones, THG: Catching Fire, THG: Mockingjay Part 1, If I Stay, Divergent, Vampire Academy and The Hobbit, to name a few. I love seeing my favorite books come to the big screen and I love to meet those who worked hard to make it happen. Like Theo James, who I thought did a fantastic job playing Four in Divergent.
