Carmy as Your Baby Daddy | Social Media AU & Headcanon Series | part one

masterlist | part two now that i've finished my top gun: maverick series, it's me i'm back and gearing up for season two. after a bout of food poisoning, i finally cracked and am writing this pregnancy headcanon that i said i wouldn't bc my ovaries would explode (looking at you @allthefandomstogether). anyways, a huge thank you to @carmensberzattos who pinged many an ideas back and forth about carmy as your baby daddy and screamed into the abyss about this on a friday night. i'm writing this with my main character from the make your heart surrender-verse, but can absolutely read as a standalone piece. posting now because i'm so damn excited but i may go back and add some more things later.

oh and this a headcanon series now so. that part.

carmy as your baby daddy:

sometime after the wedding, you and carmy decide that you're ready to start a family. you're not trying but you're not not trying, meaning you've gone off of birth control but you're not carefully monitoring your ovulation cycle either. you both figure that it'll happen when it happens and if it doesn't, there are many other ways to make a family.

carmy never really thought about having kids until the two of you got together. after adopting your kitty together, carmy got to see a your more nurturing side and taking care of something together as a team made him think about how much he wants a family with you. after sugar has her baby it really ups the ante. seeing carmy become an uncle is what starts the conversation about seriously starting a family, and every time carmy sees you holding the baby, it's 'when our kids this, and when our kids that' for days after.

you swear it's food poisoning. after a somewhat questionable late night meal, you spend half the night vomiting while carmy works a later night at the restaurant. you text him to bring ginger ale and tums home. of course he comes through because are you kidding this man is a caretaker?!

you insist that you're fine and much better, even though you're absolutely exhausted. things are so busy at work for you (and have i mentioned the pregnancy fatigue) that you don't think much of it when a few nights later, you find yourself kneeling on the bathroom floor once again.

there are always little kids running around at the extended family gatherings and which led to your realization (when you first met everyone) that carmy is surprisingly good with kids.

it's not till a week or two later (after your little bout of 'food poisoning') that you're at cicero's place for a family birthday party that it hits you. one of carmy's cousins (not richie kind of cousin teehee) has just had a new baby with his wife. you've been catching up with ava, richie's daughter because you've become an auntie of sorts to her. you find some time to steal away for a some girl-time but when you return, carmy is holding his new niece/nephew in his arms.

the sight of him holding the baby not only takes your goddamn breath away as he stares long and hard your way, his blue eyes piercing right through your heart, but it's then that you realize that you're a few weeks late. it's like time stops as you look at him, seeing him coo at the baby with the softest look on his face. the realization hits you, clear as day.

"holy shit." is all you say, earning a few funny looks from the berzatto extended family and friends. "carm, can i borrow you for a second?" you and carmy find a quiet place to talk inside. "you okay, babe?" "carmy i think i'm-. what if i-. i'm late." "what do you-? like.. late late?" "now that i think about it, a few weeks late, honey." "yeah?" he asks you, totally in shock and eyes wide. "yeah."

the two of you make an excuse to leave the party as soon as possible, and hurry to the nearest drugstore to pick up a pregnancy test. you wait till you're home to take it. "do you want me to come in, sweetheart?" "no, carmy! i don't want you to watch me pee, you weirdo!" you answer, even though you know he's just excited.

the two of you are pacing back and forth, practically making dents in the floor with your footsteps for what feels like the longest two minutes of your lives. when your timer goes off, you're both simultaneously freaking out about the fact that you're lives are about to change forever, while also really, really hoping for a positive result. and as the fates would have it, the test is positive.

"holy shit. holy fucking shit. we're- you're-, we're gonna-!" carmy is ecstatic as searches for words. "we're having a baby, baby!" you squeal jumping into his arms." "god, i love you so much," he says, grinning at you as wrap your legs around his waist. "i love you too, carm. so, so much."

you literally get the biggest kick out of calling him your baby daddy: to friends and family, coworkers, random strangers, in restaurants, at the gas station. you'll take photos of him at the farmers market and post on your ig story referring to him as your baby daddy because you find it hilarious. carmy doesn't find it as funny (even though he secretly loves it) and he's cherry-tomato red when you tell the checkout clerk at the bodega across the street from your place that your baby daddy is going to pick up the tab.

everyone at the restaurant is so excited for you! even richie cries a little when you tell him the news. you hadn't really gotten close to richie until ava grew super attached to you, which opened up a whole new avenue and understanding for your friendship with richie.

ever since you found out you were pregnant, carmy always has bread and ginger ale on hand for your morning sickness. he started making you your favorite soft scrambled eggs with toast, but the chives have been way too strong of a flavor for a sensitive tummy. it's slowly become eggs & toast and then just... toast, which you promptly apologize for stripping away any kind of artistic freedom he may have previously had.

you get near compulsive cravings for certain foods, and carmy is always ready to throw on a jacket and run across the street when you get midnight cravings.

carmy hates seeing how tumultuous pregnancy has been during your first trimester. he's always ready with a hair tie or a glass of water for when you're done throwing up. okay hear me out: but carmy starting to wear hair ties because he wants to always have one ready for you. he'll even take off a morning with you or call your workplace if you need a sick day just so that he can take care of you. even if you don't need care, he just wants to spend time with you and be there for you while you go through it.

we already know that carmy is an acts of service king. he is the tenderest, most gentle partner and wants to be as helpful as possible. if you're sick, he wants to make you feel better. if the pregnancy hormones are raging against the machine, he's more than happy to let you be upset, or get you off by any means if the hormones go that way too. he'll sit on the bathroom floor with you and rub your back until you need to vomit again. he'll give you the best morning head of your life. he'll run a bath for you when you need one. he checks in every hour on the hour in your first trimester, which you appreciate, but eventually have to ask him to chill the fuck out.

speaking of physical changes, the pregnancy boobs are ELITE. carmy is always there to make you feel beautiful despite your rapidly changing body, esp when your clothes start fitting differently.

the first time your bump starts showing and you point it out to him, carmy cries. or maybe he notices it first and he's just like... weeping and you're like: babe r u ok? and then you realize that you're showing and carmy is kneeling and admiring your baby bump and now you're crying. sorry, but i don't make the rules it's just a fact that this is how it would go down.

carmy is so emotional about this because he realizes that he finally gets to build the family he didn't have and he gets to build it with you.

well this just hijacked my writing plans oops. part two will be more 'you & carmy pregnancy things' and part three will be birth & post-birth.

I've been having a TON of fun dressing dolls up in clothes made by @cosmomoore! This isn't even everything I have, and I've already ordered something else whoops.

Some ghoulfriends! This is Ghoul Spirit Cleo, wearing an outfit Cosmo Moore designed (including the fabric!) with stock accessories (headband is Skulltimate Secrets, shoes are I think core, earrings are Ghoul Spirit and idr where the necklace is from) based off of early g3 concept art and Feardescent Frankie wearing an ooak outfit they designed including accessories! Frankie even has socks that you can't see, which is so fun.

I have so many Draculaura leggings that it's almost not even funny. Cosmo Moore just had SO MANY prints that look adorable on her! This is Ghoul Spirit Draculaura wearing Bite in the Park stock along with some lovely spooky leggings and a delightful pink jacket. I love how the leggins look with her dress so much!

Twyla is a bit of a mess right now, but that's okay bc she's comfy! She's wearing her stock shoes, skirt and accessories as well as a Neon Frights top (sans earrings idk where they are) with the leggings I originally got for Lagoona but forgot about her fins along with a trans version of Cosmo Moore's skeleton bomber jacket and a "plush" rabbit purse! I'm very happy to have a pastel version of that jacket, and as SOON as I saw this little rabbit, I knew Twyla needed it.

The last one for this post is Lagoona sporting one of the ooak outfits Cosmo Moore did for her! I love that each piece of clothing incorporates multiple but not all of her palette, and the button holes to accommodate her fins is a very clever idea! The outer top is reversible, and this is actually the back side - if you look at the pic they originally posted the front is a very nice blue that's subtly different from the blue background of the shirt. It's absolutely lovely, but I'm more of a high contrast monster myself. This Lagoona is Skulltimate Secrets with stock earrings and shoes. I'd put the hat on, but it fell off in a hard to reach spot so hatless she shall be.

I absolutely adore the little winged heart purse, too! I keep imagining her chewing on it to self soothe. And this is an outfit for a ghoul design they didn't like all that much! And it still turned out so good! That's super impressive to me, especially since Lagoona is probably my single favorite character this generation due to how fun she is in the show and how much I like lots of color.

I think that with Haley he was like somewhat reserved with his PDA like even in front of the team who are all closer than family he was careful not to let his guard down so much SOOO I think when he’s recovered from that loss and he’s ready to finally move on again, he would not hesitate to hold your hand all the time and have you right by him, I actually think it would become like a compulsion to have skin to skin contact with you otherwise how can he be SURE you’re okay, so I think he would appear to be the clingy one but of course you know he’s just afraid of letting go

Bonus points bc I think reader would obviously know that them not being near/touching Aaron makes him nervous so they would give him something else to hold onto every time they have to leave the station/ leave work early or whatever it may be so they’re like hey babe can you just hold my tea while I go buy everyone coffee real quick? and he’s like sure seems strange but okay but then when he gets anxious with how long you’re gone he’s like okay okay the tea’s still warm, it’s not even cold yet. something i wish there was more focus on, was aaron in terms of the aftermath of what happened to haley. we got bits and pieces in s5, little mentions throughout, route 66, but everything quickly went back to normal with him. while it made sense for his character in a way, it didn't make sense.

aaron having survivors guilt, a total possibility :( while it wasn't his fault she died, and it took him so so long to realize and accept that, he knows he was a contributing factor. how many sleepless nights did he have where he lying there in the dark, staring at the ceiling, completely tearing himself apart over it - that his high school sweetheart, the one he pictured himself being with forever, is no longer here. what if he had only figured it out/driven faster, could he have prevented the outcome? could he had said something differently on the phone to distract foyet, something that would've bought him more time to get there, could he have stopped foyet and saved her? that jack no longer has a mother present, that it should've been him, and he's just wondering over and over about what would've happened if he just took the deal.

and all while thinking that, he's mourning their relationship and all good times he had with haley. he loved her. it's clear he never stopped. and maybe he even thought after this nightmare was over, they would've reconnected, figured things out, and gotten back together.

he knows, firsthand, what it's like to lose someone. so when it comes to you, he will not make the same 'mistakes' he made with haley.

so, aaron will show everyone and anyone that he loves you. he makes an effort to. pda, while still practiced when appropriate, isn't a huge concern of his anymore. he'll give you that kiss in public, he'll grab your hand or be touching you in anyway he can, he'll gush about you to the team. he's learned the hard way; love is too fragile not to.

in addition, aaron has nightmares every so often. this is when he first really opened up to you about his fears; you were sleeping over and woke up to him jerking awake :( sweat dripping down his face, breathing heavily, frantically grabbing onto you. so you asked him if he wanted to talk about it :(( while he dreams about haley, you make your way into his dreams as well. he's lost haley, and now he can't afford to lose you. he can't. the worst is when he dreams about losing both of you :(

some days are worst than others. so if you aren't around, he has to ground himself to remind him that you're here. your favorite book is laying on the coffee table, with the bookmark poking out, you will be back to finish that book. your side of the bed is made, but later that night you will be pulling the duvet back, ready to sleep with him at your side. also if you and aaron were to have a disagreement, he'll allow you your space if you want it, but he will not let the matter go about without acknowledgement. after his disagreements with haley, with her or even him walking out, he won't allow for it anymore. he's protective and mindful when it comes to you. he didn't know how much time he had with haley, so with that in the back of his mind, aaron will stop at nothing to show you affection, to show you off to the world, and to protect you in every possible way he can manage.

i'm sure it's been said but i feel like both Raxtus and Ronodin can be argued as "the only gay kid in the family and consequently shunned/rejected" and it's like. so weird bc Mull is so Mormon he'd probably rather eat his shorts than even acknowledge the possible existence of gays but

and they both get so thoroughly rejected and sidelined by their families their whole lives and it turns Raxtus into an awkward but basically decent guy who runs back to the approval of his family once he's performed masculinity/violence enough to be accepted, only to then realize that he's basically just being used and still not fully trusted/accepted and having to betray them to save his real friends

(who sadly are probably actually homophobic but that's ok bc they're not dragon-phobic so that works out for him)

while Ronodin's like "fuck it. chaos and murder then!" and can you really blame him? he spent his entire life trying to conform to the "right" (in this case, Light) way of life, started spending time with the outgroup and learned to question things, then was told he was "too corrupt" to remain in his home

like. the symbolism is right there.

it's so funny, because sure Raxtus isn't a bad guy, but Ronodin definitely is and he pretty much gets sent to a type of hell at the end of Dragonwatch

and while Raxtus gets kind of a happy ending, like, him becoming an effective killer in a war and being accepted by his dad for being Good At Murder in the first Fablehaven series is presented as a happy ending. if Celebrant didn't wind up being the main villain for Dragonwatch, that probably would've been the end of it! gay kid learns how to soldier and is finally accepted by his homophobic family bc he's finally aggressive enough for them to love him

(i mean i have MANY issues with Celebrant being the main villain later and the reasons he's framed as bad but like. that's a separate rant lol)

1- [Fairy Tail] Lyna Dreyar (technically now Dreyar-McGarden) . I genuinely don't remember much from when I created her years ago — I think I do have notes somewhere. She was always Laxus' little sister though. She was also a Dragon Slayer but now she isn't anymore jdjdjdb. I think I reworked her personality a bit too? She was more of an extrovert in my first drafts I think, but she's not as much anymore 🤔

2- [One Piece] Monkey D. Ceeli (previously Shelly). Once again, I created her a long time ago! And she changed a bit, too. (I mean, we also learned some more about this world since I created her lmao). She's Luffy's little sister (by three years). In my first drafts (I do have a fanfic with a few chapters posted with her as a character, over on my ff.net... not on ao3 bc i don't think I will ever complete it) she was supposed to have been raised with the ASL brothers, with a pretty serious personality and very interested by the Revolutionary in general. Also I don't remember what it was exactly but she had powers™. Now, she has a super powered haki (bc i can), she was raised by their mother (for... reasons), and Luffy doesn't know her (or that she exists). She's also way less serious and a bit more into the overexcited side.

3- [HP] Daisy Potter (it... wasn't her first name when I first thought about her but I can't remember what it was now). Again, a very old OC! She wasn't that developed all that time ago, but she's way more present in my mind now haha. You will never guess, but she's Harry's little sister, bc i once found the HC that Lily was pregnant when she died and I ran away with it. Interestingly enough, I think that the explanation I have for her birth now and then is the same? And same for her fate in canon,,, (I mean, a canon where she's born). Rip (i love u baby). I put her in a lot of different aus now, where she grows up differently each time and things impact her differently, but I think at her core she's a very brave and smart girl who wants to do good. She's her parents' daughter all the way!

4- [Star Wars] Letti Kryze. One of my most recent ones! So maybe five years old or so idk what time is. She's Korkie Kryze's daughter, a Jedi, eight years younger than Luke & Leia, and has the habit of causing accidental chaos everywhere she goes. I love her she's a baby. I remember after watching the first season of the Mandalorian thinking it would be funny if her and Din kept throwing the Darksaber back at each other bc neither of them want to be the big boss™. She's a tired teenage girl in the middle of an intergalactic war who just wants her father back and it shows.

5- [DC] Emma Pennyworth. Alfred's granddaughter via his daughter Julia. She is, in general, done with the Batfam's collective bullshit, and wants to hold the braincell. She's also like, twelve, so there's that. I've written her a few times actually!! She tries so hard to be serious and mature and she forgets a bit to be a kid, but also her favorite sport is annoying Damian lmao.

Yes there's a common theme in all of those lmao. Interestingly enough, even when the OC is like... Cringey and a bit Mary-Sue and all, the goal was always to have them as part of the family and... That's it. Legit 0 of them have a love interest (I'm thinking of Cana for Lyna but that's a very recent development, and I do have a few ideas for Letti but it would be another OC)!! It's so funny in insight idkdkd

I also have a fair share of OCs that are like. The next gen (you know the type). So there's that. I'm giving so many characters kids and I'm not even sorry.

One of the biggest reasons people sympathize with Marcela is Natalia Ramirez’s acting. I was watching a comparison video between ysblf and lfmb and Elizabeth Alvarez fumbled a couple of scenes were Marcia’s vulnerable side shows up. For instance, one of the times that Armando rejects her, Marcela is crying in silence right next to him. Marcia, on the other hand, is just staring off into the distance without crying and Fernando is not there next to her. It doesn’t have the same impact. Not saying it was the actress’ fault. The director played a huge role on how it was portrayed. Also, when you have the actress defend her part constantly and referring to Betty as the true villain, it’s bound to make an impression with the audience. Especially when ysblf is still huge in streaming. I know lfmb was a major hit for Televisa and has many fans, but it can’t compare to the reach the original continues to have. So there’s a lot of people in the fandom with different takes.

But I agree with you. If you are gonna defend a character, you can also talk about their flaws. Marcela didn’t just hate Betty for hiding Armando’s mistresses or being the other woman or for her part in the financial mess. She hated her way before that and wanted her out of Ecomoda ever since she first set a foot in there. Stole her work, treated her horribly, and the list goes on and on.

When people say that Marcela was always there for Armando like that’s a good thing? It would be different it was like being there for a friend who is having a rough time. But when you are taking about being always there for someone who cheated on you over and over, endangered your family’s business, and is in love with someone else? How is it a good thing to be always there to pick up the pieces? Forget about the pieces, she was collecting crumbs and was happy with that.

I understand appreciating excellent performances and complex and very human characters. But it’s a different thing to make them out to be flawless and completely innocent. I love your thoughts, you have very nuanced takes and those are hard to find 🫶

Re Ramirez (marcela) vs Alvarez's (marcia) acting: bc lfmb decided to copy the Ecomoda Spin off Sitcom style (bc they did and that's a future post blah blah blah), they do not make space for marcia's dramatic moments. they soften the character a lot in the mexican adaptation. characters are not as mean to lety as they are in the original. the direction of lfmb is so different and in some scenes it's bad. (or rather the set design is bad).

On one hand, yes I think Ramirez is a better actress than Alvarez bc I think Alvarez suffers from 'I have blue eyes look at me Condition'. But also, she's not given anything to work with or anyone to work off of. Camil does not give her enough to work with but again, the directors are not asking them to give what was given in Ysblf. It's a vicious circle but its much easier to blame the directors.

Back to Ramirez, I've come across a handful of her interviews and yes she's def said some stuff and some I agree with and some I do not. It's her character at the end of the day, but she's looking at it fm her character's pov and not what is seen on the screen. I get that she probably did not like being called a villain, so again, I understand the need to defend her but...the text is clear that Marcela is a manipulative and classist person. Great acting is done on her part to show the vulnerable side but it doesn't justify the character's actions.

She hated her way before that and wanted her out of Ecomoda ever since she first set a foot in there. Stole her work, treated her horribly, and the list goes on and on.

Nobody ever wants to discuss how Marcela is a misogynist. She hated Betty on sight bc of her appearance, her class, her education, her sex. There's an old Ramirez interview where she talks about how Ysblf is the traditional Cinderella telenovela but remixed to modern day. Betty is Cinderella--kind, loving, poor and shunned to her little office. Except she is not beautiful like Cinderella, and the ugly step sisters are Marcela and Patricia except they're beautiful, rich and cruel. And obviously Armando, who Betty idealizes as Prince Charming but is actually far more complex. I think if today's fans realized this, they would get their shit together and realize that Betty isn't a villain in her own story.

When people say that Marcela was always there for Armando like that’s a good thing? It would be different it was like being there for a friend who is having a rough time. But when you are taking about being always there for someone who cheated on you over and over, endangered your family’s business, and is in love with someone else? How is it a good thing to be always there to pick up the pieces? Forget about the pieces, she was collecting crumbs and was happy with that.

People that say that believe that Armando owed her and that he did not appreciate her. Mind you, when it's found out that he lost their family's company and he was in the dumps, he did not ask her to stand by him. He did not ask her to be there for him. She chose to be there for him (at his lowest) and then held it against him like she does with everything. She has the ability to alienate him from his own parents. She could have called Margarita to help her with her own son but she doesn't. Marcela was desperate to hold on to any part of him just to say she had him. It didn't matter to her if he loved her or not bc in her mind, she put in the work and therefore deserved him.

Marcela was never there for Armando for his own benefit. It was always for hers. Marcela is a complex characters like Armando, but her complexity doesn't absolve her of any wrongdoing. Also, she had no self respect. Like, stand up girl. That man does not love you.

i rant a lot abt genya and sanemi so here’s 8 rants abt genya and sanemi that no one asked for. but still got.

dedicated to everyone on twitter that got sad after reading them.

1.

i feel like ppl misunderstand genya i think bc they’re projecting into him like “he should be mad abt what sanemi did” no he shouldn’t????? don’t get me wrong he sure COULD but the whole point of the character is that he doesn’t, bc he’s simply not that kind of person !!

he’s so empathetic. he understands sanemi more than,,, probably anyone lmao, not in a logical sense bc he doesn’t analyze sanemi per se hes just led by feelings !! the thing abt genya is that ppl degrading him didn’t make him hate them, it made him hate himself.

i feel like that’s rlly important to who genya is, his values, how he sees life,,, he’s a naturally forgiving and loving person and sees the good in everyone by empathizing,,,

many people wouldn’t do the same but some other people would and that’s the beauty of his character, that he has his own ideals and perception.

2.

one thing that gets me is that genya was,,, healing. he met friends and people he appreciated and appreciated him. he wasn’t alone as he was when he was a kid and as he was when sanemi was no longer by his side.

he was healing until he wasn’t, right? physically and mentally. not even regeneration, not even having friends could save him. he got strong enough to save others, but not himself.

replying to a comment : I actually think it’s a great trajectory narratively speaking,,, specifically bc it’s unfair. The whole thing with kny is that demons are stronger than human, that their lives are on the line, that it’s a war and people die unfairly.

i think genya didn’t feel like sanemi HATED him or something big like that, i think he just thought sanemi didn’t want him as a brother bc he had hurt him with what happened in their past

genya is hurt bc he wants a good relationship with sanemi and therefore wants to apologize, and that’s where his insecurities abt if sanemi hates him arrive, but he never questions sanemi being a good person

and he doesn’t think sanemi wants him dead or to hurt him, he just thinks sanemi’s mad at him and has every right to be (in genya’s mind)

i interpreted it this way bc of the scene where he talks to tanjiro and tanjiro tells him sanemi isn’t angry (he has doubts abt sanemi’s feelings) and bc of the scene where he punches zenitsu (he knows sanemi’s not a bad person)

(both of this scenes are before sanemi’s confession of his true intentions, bc genya’s perspective could’ve changed after that giving place to the death scene. but this leads me to believe this were his feelings before all of that)

but yeah i think we tend to extrapolate their behavior towards each other to every field when i think it’s not it

genya felt hurt on a personal way bc sanemi was trying to cut their relationship, but i didn’t get the feeling that he felt abused

besides genya being a kind and understanding and forgiving person, sanemi was always dismissive towards him. not aggressive.

i mean, he was mean (and he got worse due to genya not relenting) but his objective wasn’t to actively hurt genya by saying he was a worthless piece of trash, it was more to make him see he didn’t have talent.

but he never searched for genya to degrade him and ruin his life, in fact, what hurt genya wasn’t being degraded it was being ignored. related to what i said earlier abt him wanting a good relationship.

genya also has self esteem issues and i guess it’s partly influenced by what sanemi said but it’s mostly bc it’s true that he can’t use breathes. this never deterred him from eating demons to be able to fight though, he was determined to overcome this.

in kimetsu gakuen it’s said sanemi’s hard on genya so genya can be better and i think it’s based on this part of canon; it’s characteristic of genya bc it helps him get stronger (study more in gakuen) and it makes him kinda doubt himself

(in gakuen he thinks sanemi might like him more if he was smart like the tokito’s) but it ultimately doesn’t mean he has a bad relationship with sanemi, it’s just a depiction of their brotherly dynamic smh.

in canon though, the being ignored part IS what’s making their relationship fail.

also, the fact that genya didn’t think that sanemi hated him (he only wanted to be away from him) explains why he was so surprised in the eye poking scene,,, he didn’t feel like sanemi hated him so he didn’t expect him to do that, it felt out of character for him.

i don’t know what genya thought about sanemi after that but i bet it’s something related to not hating him, but hating that he was eating demons and doing something so foul.

4.

sanemi overthinks about genya. about life. on his desperation not to loose people he loves, he makes intricate plans to push genya away.

genya’s simpler, in a way. “you had many horrible memories and i want you to be happy” he’s not carefully crafted plans to protect, he’s much more genuine. he just loves.

5.

i can’t with the shinazugawas bc they loved each other sm they didn’t want the other to die before them. the only thing sanemi wanted for genya to be alive and viceversa bc they could handle loosing their relationship but they couldn’t handle loosing each other

6.

no bc i just know that genya was terrified while he died but i think that he was also happy that sanemi didn’t, everytime i think abt how selfless he actually was i get sick he deserved sm more

he must’ve also felt so broken bc his brother loved him !!! but they’ll never see each other again !!! and they didn’t enjoy their moments together to the fullest but he really only wanted sanemi to survive and viceversa.

7.

i think a lot abt how family dynamics affect the shinazugawas storyline bc sanemi feels like he has the duty to protect genya bc he’s the older sibling

but genya’s the second oldest . was the second oldest and he also has the instinct to protect

genya feels responsible too and more so after he wasn’t there for sanemi when sanemi needed it the most

he had to fight to protect bc sanemi wanted him to be the one protected but he saw the suffering he wanted to help

he’s an older brother who doesn’t have little siblings anymore

comment : Oh not to mention Genya was the one who witnessed his siblings getting killed, sanemi wasn’t in there when it happened. I feel like that would also effect genya majorly since he seen it happen yk?

YEAH THAT TOO that must’ve affected him sm bc he couldn’t protect anyone that night. sanemi protected genya but genya was there and he was unable to do anything 😭

i think that’s also why he’s so insistent on apologizing to sanemi bc like . looking back he’d see that the only thing he could’ve done that night was at least be there for him and he wasn’t

reply to a comment : yeah sanemi could’ve had better communication skills, but honestly? i get him. he wanted genya to get away and be safe and if he had accepted genya’s apology and showed him a bit of warmth genya wouldn’t have let go 😭

i feel like more ppl see genya only as a victim bc his way of reacting to trauma was to blame himself but that is too his issue

he could’ve hated sanemi or defended himself but he . didn’t . and he probably should have bc that was what sanemi was aiming to do too 😭 but genya just blamed himself

genya didn’t have to keep being after sanemi given how bad he was being treated, and then sanemi wouldn’t have been driven to extremes

it’s the fact that their interests and ways of reacting to trauma and family dynamics conflict what makes the events of kny possible but genya’s trauma did influence it he wasn’t acting like any normal person would, either.

AAAAH so I’ve been inactive/lurking for years but I need to come out from the shadows for a second to THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR OFMD METAS. Especially your takes on Stede in 6/7!! I know a lot of people have said it, (bc it’s true and right) but you describe and explain things SO WELL IT BREAKES MY HEART. AGH. THANK YOU. I feel like this last episode especially was just the culmination of Stede putting all his core insecurities into a pressure cooker and leaving them there while he focuses on everything else. We all love to point out that this man just does NOT talk about any of his core issues while they are VERY MUCH still issuing! He still believes everything bad that has happened is all his fault!! He’s still thinking about that blood spattered little boy at his core!! (side note: a famous, deadly pirate getting killed via Stede throwing a violin at his head was NUTS. that concept is NUTS. I love this show.) Honestly I think at this point it’s just finally Stede’s turn to have a breakdown, and that’s where at least some of his behavior at the end of ep 7 is coming from. Most of our major characters this season have had one where they break hard, find support, and come out on the other side of it at least a little better. He has NOT. He hasn’t had a Stede centered heart to heart with anyone yet!! He’s grown so much in so many other ways, but like you’ve said!!! He just will not OPEN UPP. Because it’s scary!! What if you finally say the thing you know is fundamentally wrong with you, and the people you love finally see you for what you are?? Why would you do that when you can just try to fix it by shoving it down and making yourself into something else instead? And then what do you do when that all goes to hell anyways?? You act a fool and get your ass beat by a pirate queen is what 😭😭. It feels like we’ve all been side eying Stede not talking about his issues and the show just went, “Yep! For sure! Now look at what it’s done for him.” That compared to everyone else working through things and starting to move on?? Owie. Absolutely delicious- but also I think I’m different now. Like, as a person. And I trust this show to work it out!! I think Stede will get there eventually!! But like. Fuckin OWIE.

Because Lord, you're right, how do we expect this man to function when he hasn't had his bathtub moment yet? And to think--he ALMOST could have. Ed was opening the door and giving him a place to talk and share vulnerabilities. Ed came in and started talking about his DAD, which as we know is a MAJOR piece of vulnerability for him. He really came in and set the stage for them to go in that direction...

Like, it kills me. HE kills me. People give him the opportunity. People try and extend an olive branch. And yet still, he hides behind numerous walls. He helps other people before he helps himself. His bathtub was used for the benefit of others in episode 6 as opposed to his own. And I think that's a perfect representation of his character as a whole, really.

And man I knew, I KNEWWWW he was going to have so much to work on when the season opened up with that dream sequence. I think that dream sequence spoke on SO MUCH of what's going on in his head. It really cracked his psyche right on open. The beard, the ruthlessness, the deeper voice, the posturing, the way he doesn't "gain access" to Ed until after he's made a kill...

It was all just SCREAMING self-image issues and toxic masculinity issues and trauma to me. Not to mention how DRAMATIC of a contrast it was to Ed's. Ed loves his darling, sweet, fantastic goldfish for who he is. And it kills me that Stede can't see that yet.

But yes, I do believe we'll get there. I believe that's WHY all of this is being shown/set up. The show is very clearly telling us that Ed and Stede have issues to work through, and that their relationship is going to take mutual effort to become mature and grounded.

...But man, is the climb up to that A BIG OWCHIE INDEED LMAO.

Author's notes for Sick aka I ramble about my complex Disability Feelings

When you're sick, especially given the dominance of the medical model of disability, it's easy to view your body as a separate adversary, and this scenario takes it to the extreme of completely removing yourself from your body. I've talked before on this blog about my complicated feelings on magic disability cures - I don't like them in fiction; I'd like one myself in real life - and this is me contemplating 'what if'?

I do not like being sick. It is painful, time-consuming, expensive, and frequently embarrassing. I wish it had not happened to me. But being disabled is now a major part of my identity and experience - it's probably the first label I would list when thinking about the different facets that impact my life. Being disabled has made me more aware of disability justice issues and changed the way I relate to and rely on other people. In some ways that sucks - it's progressively taken over what I eat, where I work, where I live (which I also take to the extreme in this story with ambiguously literal possession) - but in other ways, I think the disability community often has a much better worldview than mainstream America. I'm glad I've become more aware of some of those perspectives and issues. And because disability has shaped so much of my life for the past... six? years, for good and for ill, it's hard for me to conceive of what my life would be like without it. How would I think about myself? What would I do? This is my new normal, like it or not. I don't remember what it's like to make a fist painlessly.

An added wrinkle is that autoimmunity is my body Trying Its Best. I make a lot of jokes about my body trying to kill me because that's how it shakes out (please, little guys in my blood, stop eating my bones) but autoimmunity is a trauma response. My body got clobbered by so many outside poisons that it can't recognize what a real threat is anymore. It's trying to protect me and doing a terrible job. It's another place where you can look at your body as an external adversary versus a system that your mind is also a part of. But also no matter how you look at it, I am still sick.

There's also some stuff in the piece about the helplessness that comes from being sick which (surprise!) I also have mixed feelings about. Because it sucks not having control over your body! I want to be supervising that shit. But also... I don't know how common this is, but there is a weird kind of comfort in being tucked in bed with someone else taking care of me. I even find going into surgery oddly relaxing because for a while my life will be someone else's problem.

At the same time I also worry that I'm using disability as an excuse. Am I begging off attending something because I really am tired or worried about exposure/overwork or do I just not want to go?

Finally we have Aro Angst because that's always on my mind. And it's extra on my mind in the context of disability because what if I get to the point where I can't take care of myself anymore? I don't have a romantic partner to help me or to provide health insurance if I can't work. I live near my parents and have passed up job opportunities that would take me further away. Most specifically for this story, even I find myself sometimes falling into the trap of assuming the ultimate endstate of closeness/intimacy would be romantic/sexual bc of cultural conditioning. It's annoying! So the character (Dani, I named her Danielle in a reference to the Daniel/the cooler Daniel meme) is still seeking the community, care, and closeness she experienced as part of the disabled community, and the messier weirder intimacy of feeling connected to her own body, but she's struggling with interpreting that through cultural norms of amatonormativity. Sometimes 'I want to be inside you/I want you inside me' is, shockingly, not a sex thing. Hence, toxic nonhorny clone makeouts. I guess???

Side note: I've mentioned this wrt pieces I've written with aromanticism that follow a similar pattern of taking something I am at least not too consciously dramatic about and making the MC a pathetic wet cat about it. I guess they are serving the purpose of Everyman in a medieval morality play here. They are crash test dummies I am flinging at walls to count the cracks. Not great character writing but that's not what this is about rn.

Heyyy!! Saw you talking about Astrid and was wondering if you have any headcanons for her that sort of fill out where the canon content doesn't?

I actually have a good number of hcs/little canon facts that I’ve compiled for her that I really like and feel like they fill her character out a little more

She fights so hard to be a strong fighter (and seen as such) to offset the reputation her family got after Fearless Finn Hofferson got frozen by the flightmare, even into RTTE

This leads to her putting herself in danger in fights excessively to leave no doubts that she is strong

We don’t see her acting like,,, ‘traditionally feminine’? In many ways except around Hiccup, but I think that she does really like stuff like flowers and sparkly things and stuff

She’s always been a very natural leader (which kinda falls by the wayside sometimes bc Hiccup is the gang’s leader and chief) but we can see that in the way she acts in the first movie, the Astrid’s Team episode, and other battle scenes (like in the finale)

A little piece of her always felt that there might be a little more to dragons than they gave them credit for (but between being raised to kill them, generations of war with them, and the negatively impacted reputation of her family after her uncle froze up in front of a dragon, she pushed any of those doubts to the side), this is part of the reason why she was so quick to change her mind after taking her first flight on Toothless

She has a very hard time realizing when she is wrong, and when she is told that she is wrong she gets defensive and kinda refuses to see their point for a bit (before she calms down and eventually realizes she was wrong)

She is very proud over the fact that Stormfly can fly faster than Toothless and has the hottest fire

She was raised just as much by her Uncle as she was by her parents. They were very close and in the aftermath of all of the flightmare stuff he was the one to tell her to keep fighting and hold her head high no matter what the people around her think

Fubuki and Suoh have been put together to do countless group projects since half the time they had the same classes.

Due to visiting Suoh and as such, Suoh’s house so much, Fubuki has secretly grown to love the smell of flowers

After Turbo, Fubuki returned to Japan briefly to finish the school year there before fully going to America. He always comes to visit the beyclub from time to time though (everyone’s like “OMG. FUBUKI’S HERE!!” When he comes to visit. Some people are crazy enough to bring party popers or roll out the red carpet or something.)

Fubuki, ironically enough, does not like bananas.

He likes teaching younger kids that are in the raging bulls all the tricks he had learned (beyblade related or not). He just finds it fun.

He may be the designated shu kurenai of his season, but his report card says otherwise (instead of it being above average… itd average. As Suoh says “he’s the hard worker and I’m the genius”, or some sh*t like that)

Fubuki and Suoh OBVIOUSLY made up after the events of turbo. Bc c’mon. Why not.

Arman:

My man likes to garden. Or literal anything that has to do with plants. I guess my man just likes plants period.

In a way he’s much like Shu but like a more responsible, less impulsive version of him. By that I mean basically is that he will be the most responsible person in the room if he HAS to be, because I aslo feel that that’s something that Shu would do (except that Arman would do this without pulling a stupid and getting himself caught up in his own snakepit mess)

He probably likes classical music, but Japanese classical music specifically (listen to it guys. It WILL blow your socks off)

He’s that one nice yet overprotective brother, not just to Taka, but to EVERYONE (okay except Arthur due to obvious reasons)

(Due to the fact that in the manga Gwyn kind of broke his bey) I feel like Arman was suspicious of Gwyn when he saw him initially (like In a “what’s this guy doing here” *pause* “this guy that’s…up to NO GOOD-“ kinda way)

He likes gold accessories. Not because of the way he acts, but because of a thing that happened in a dream I had about him…hee hee… 🤭

Everyone keeps telling him that he looks like gon from hunter x hunter and he is so done. (Don’t tell him that unless you want the biggest bombastic side eye of your life)

If you do get on his good side though he’ll be the most loyal piece of sh*t you have seen in your entire time though. This is my pro tip for you, whatever you plan to do with that.

If you do betray him though, after the initial betrayal, he’ll hate you forever. There is two sides of this Arman , so be careful not to betray him.

(but even though Gwyn kinda did betray him (& the rest of the victories) they have made up and now they’re cool, so forgiveness IS possible)

✨8.5/10✨. He was a great charather, great guy. The writers did him great justice…although much like other turbo characters, he was only revelant for the only first half of the season. I liked him a normal amount. He was there, he’s chill and cool with the kids, what else could you ask for??? Like- seriously??? His character and personality was nailed perfectly too, and the fact that he didn’t instantly become buddy buddy with Aiger is perfect. Kudos to the writers and the handling of this charather. Only reasons not a 9/10 or a 10/10 is bc 1) he’s not my fav character like ever ever and 2) I just like Arman better lol

Arman:

Solid ✨9/10✨. At first I found it funny that we didn’t have a Kiyama for Dante and instead this guy, but when his own unique personality set in that wasn’t just another copy paste Kiyama or copy paste Shu Kurenai, I was so impressed. I don’t think that Dante could have worked as a character if he had a Kiyama, so I’m glad that Arman filled in that void instead. He was so cool too. The fact that he kept it together most of the time but sometimes had moments were a more silly side of him poked out worked PERFECTLY. And DONT get me STARTED about how he pulls out those goofy looking glasses and begins analyzing stuff. I just like that sh*t. Only reason that he isn’t a full on 10/10 is bc I like other characters above him. Sorry Arman 😓.

Aww I can understand that! I don't think I can offer the best advice with romantic relationships since I don't really feel the need to be in romantic relationships(I prefer being single even if a romantic interest presents itself. Even if the romantic interest is someone I do love in a romantic way;;it's an ace thing it's hard to describe dsfjdskf) but I do get the feeling of wanting the people I love or care about to be happy.

Back when I was a little younger, I did feel something a bit similar(?). It's the whole detachment, the isolating feeling of Oh, I'm okay now, but I could not escape the fact that something was "wrong" with me before: because I had been "broken" and I had no choice but to piece myself together over the years, it looks poorly done. Chipped up. I can see the lines where the glue holds everything together. What if I fall apart? It's not your responsibility to fix me. I love you too much to see you go through what I went through.

One of my favourite translated books define it as the kind of love that is like "I love you but this has nothing to do with you." And for me is what that one Mitski song is.

Hey Sydney (you finally found some luck etc)! How was the show??

hello friend!!! i was waiting for you to reach out (though i was gonna make a post when i got back home)

warning for those who are reading on - i’m on mobile so no read more, and these incohesive thoughts WILL include spoilers for the film and musical versions of wine and roses. read on at your own risk!

so i loved it, though as always i have thoughts. first thing i want to mention is i love the staging. i was up super close and the pre-show staging is reminiscent of a greenhouse

which i found so evil! but they were creative in the staging to keep the action moving. my favorite bits were the pivotal pier scene takes place overlooking the audience. brian and kelli moved over the set piece and stepped out onto us and were literally staring right down at us as they spoke! kelli’s first line for that was “look at all this trash” which got us a laugh. there were also two little pools of water on stage which they utilized nicely. there was one moment when kelli’s character is on a bender and she falls and for a minute we forget the pool is there and she almost falls in. they also had brian climb up the side of the stage to act out the climbing out the window to the greenhouse.

i want to start with brian. he was incredible. i’ve always loved him and this is a fact, but god damn he was crushing it. it was honestly really emotional seeing him up close! he has an amazing voice and he really captures the complexities of joe - it’s hard to fill an established film star’s shoes, and BDJ has shown he can go toe to toe with jack lemmon AND tony curtis. the scene that got me with him was the greenhouse scene (i’ll elaborate on this more in a minute). he really goes for the physicality of it - my only note, and i know this is bc it’s staged, is that i really wanted to see brian go for it and just tear up the greenhouse the way film joe does. his performance is intense but i wanted to see him GO THERE.

kelli is the star of this show. most people at my show were there for her, but also she gets the big songs and the big moments, and that’s fine bc she’s fucking kelli o’hara. she is an amazing singer…. and kirsten is a really hard character to play. she really had me concerned for her at so many moments (where she sets the apartment building on fire… i knew that was coming but there were several little fake outs that had me holding my breath).

i have issues processing songs on a first listen so it’s hard for me to talk about the music, but i will say the song they sing every time they fall off the wagon gutted me. the first time it’s so charming! a little dance ditty (and watching them dance is SO FUN) but when it continues to come up again and again i just started crying lol. there’s also a really good song brian and then later kelli sings about finally recognizing yourself while sober. kelli and the actress who plays their kid have a song that made me cry too towards the end

so my biggest “issues” with the show are that…. i don’t really like how the show adapts the jim storyline! the actor who plays jim is great, but so many of his lines are about how joe is a born drunk and he’ll die a drunk and once he accepts that he can get sober, etc., which feels……. i don’t know! not very nuanced re: addiction. especially when the show cuts out one of the most important bits of dialogue from the movie, that kirsten’s love of chocolate may have been a warning sign of an addictive tendency. the show seems to imply that joe was born this way but he MADE kirsten an addict, instead of the reality that she already had those same tendencies too. it’s a weird change that kinda alters the dynamic the characters have.

i also wish the show had utilized some of the most powerful visual moments from the film: joe being so drunk he crushes the flowers he brings home (this happens in the show but it’s never really addressed), joe seeing his reflection in the mirror and not recognizing himself (brian does this in passing - if you’re looking at him you see it, but the focus is on kelli so it can easily go unnoticed and it’s never addressed!), and the last shot of joe and the BAR neon sign. this last one is most likely something they wanted to do but couldn’t in lighting, but still! it’s an iconic and heartbreaking shot. i would have loved to see that.

little things i loved: brian and kelli were clearly having so much fun and that was a joy to watch, they have such an easy chemistry, you could easily buy that these two people were in love, brian does the thing he always does where he shimmies his hips and it’s so embarrassing, he also does a little strip tease and i was fucking dying, the actress who plays their kid is so good and she has one of the most heartbreaking lines that no one seemed to get — “i know how to do everything,” which made me cry! again, the greenhouse scene is just amazingly well done and the greenhouse set becomes a part of the staging for the rest of the musical, as if joe’s actions continue to haunt him throughout the rest of it.

i’m trying to think of what else to say! it’s just really good and i’m so happy i got to see it. i don’t know what will happen with the show in the future, but i hope more people get a chance to listen to it or watch it.

also i didn’t talk much about meeting brian! he was really nice, when i showed him the ssos script he was genuinely stunned. he was like oh wow! and when he asked me who to make it out to, he thought i was joshing him when i said my name was sydney. but he was kind - i told him how much he means to me (and all of us!) and he thanked me. he was like don’t miss kelli!! before he left. kelli was super sweet too - she had the same reaction lol, “oh wow!” and then bc i can here’s me and the bestie again:

20. have you noticed any patterns in your fics? words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc? UMMMM call me the forgetter the way i forget..... there are definitely words/expressions that show up a lot definitely. im sure if i looked hard enough id be able to see them GHFDJGSDFKG aaaaaannnnd as for themes i noticed ive been writing a lot on trauma and some of the uglier side effects of it ESPECIALLY when put in a situation that does not encourage healing or anything like that other than that I AM REALLY BLANKING THERE ARE DEFINITELY SO MANY MORE COMPARISONS TO BE DRAWN LMFAOOOO

22. are there certain types of writing you won’t do? (style, pov, genre, tropes, etc) hmmmmm i do a LOT of genfics and im not that much of a purely romantic type of guy yknow..... i dont see myself doing anything like that in the future i reckon! unless its a gift or something :). in the same vein i dont think ill be posting smut on my main ao3 either just bc i feel like itd really come out of left field ghfjkdgshdjkfgh.

29. what’s your revision or editing process like? i stare at it. hope google docs caught any spelling errors. convert it into ao3. hope ao3 caught any spelling errors. send it out. wake up the next morning and grimace so hard

40. if someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see? IF ANYBODY MAKES FANART OF MY WORK I CRY IMMEDIATELY YOU HAVE NO IDEAAA HOW MUCH IT MEANS TO ME SERIOUSLY. ohhhh there are a lot of big scenes in fics ooooo............. if youre looking for a dramatic piece of fanart then the miu+kokichi confrontation in lgowab is a good one. the sonia+akane conversation in opddmh could be cute........... like them on the floor looking up yknow. like a little comic. i can see it in my brain. and oooo a lot of interactions from that second last chapter of odietlg when the whole place is falling apart ................................

56. what’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on? BWAH uhm the characterisation :) i try to keep them in character but also make them feel a little more real if that makes senseee

75. what scene in odietlg took the longest to write? what was difficult about it?  ooo its been a while hm. odietlg was during a time i had a LOTT of time on my hands so i was whipping through chapters so fast it was crazy. um. maybe the finale???? just because it was a lot longer than most chapters and i kept going back to flip a few things around and all of that :))

76. did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of odietlg?  I DONT HAVE A DISCORD CHANNEL FOR THIS ONE SO THERE ISNT A LOT OF EVIDENCCEEEEEE let me think let me think. because this story was more interactive there were a few scenes that didnt make the cut solely because it wasnt voted for!!!!! i know there were MULTIPLE executions that were avoided during that miu gonta trial. there were a few more scenes including a tsumugi conversation that got cut in favour of the tenko/himiko chat in the bunker. ummmmmm unrelated to any sort of poll im really unsure!!! odietlg had a lot less planning which means a lot of initial ideas made the final cut!! i think tenko nearly started hearing other "voices" other than angie but i decided against that just bc it was never supposed to be supernatural or anything

77. do you have a favorite scene you’ve written from odietlg story/chapter?  OOOO THERE ARE A FEW SCENES I ENJOYED WRITING i think one of my favorites has to be the final 3am encounter with shuichi and tenko. it really just felt like all of those conversations were building up to this last one and i loved writing the setting and loved writing their interaction bc it just felt like a great culmination of their character development up until that point but ESPECIALLY tenkos :)
