We all know that the one and only intention of a record company is always to sell and make as much money as possible, so it's clear: YES, it was necessary. Here we have a compilation of the most famous songs sang by the brilliant voice of Mercury, without Queen, among cover ("The Great Pretender"), duets with the soprano Montserrat Caballè, various remixes and songs taken from his two not famous solo albums.

Really, it seems as a summary of the Solo Collection published in 2000, with some not unmissable remixes added.

Who Wants To Live Forever?

"Lover of life, Singer of Songs", this is what is written on the statue base in Montreux. Brian May, guitarist of Queen, coins this sentence that gives full justice to the intense artistic and personal life of the great singer born in Zanzibar. The first of the 2 dvds covers Mercury's life from the childhood to the death, through those glory days with Queen. A well done documentary, objective and sometimes moving: just this piece is worth the purchase of the entire product. But the 2nd dvd is nice too with videos of Freddie's solo performances and the duets with Montserrat Caballè in Barcelona. To love Queen is useful but not necessary to appreciate this dvds. After all we're speaking about a piece of Rock History that everybody should know very well.

"Here we are, born to be Kings, we're the Princes of the Universe/ Here we belong, fighting to survive in a world with the darkest powers". 7th March 1986, Christopher Lambert enters cinemas all over the world in the immortal Connor MacLeod's shoes for "Highlander". To wander with him through the scottish lands there are, apart from Sean Connery, Queen songs later included in the album A Kind Of Magic. This picture is taken from the video of "Princes of the Universe", filmed on the original movie's set by the director Russel Mulcahy: Lambert faces Mercury in a bloody duel. Nobody even know that, but after few months, 9th August, Freddie played with Queen for their last concert in Knebworth. It was the beginning of the end. Even if, 20 years later, the one and only real immortal becomes just Freddie Mercury.

In the middle of Koreatown, a Korean-led start-up called ‘Nesten’ is a hot topic.

The items of Nestens, where Dr. Andrew Baek, a Korean American, took the lead in technology development as CTO are the Internet of Things (IoT) and block chain technology. Both technologies are attracting more attention because they are cutting-edge fields. The company has high expectations not only for hardware software but also for networks using the hardware. Its vision is also to revitalize a networked community.

Nesten(네스텐) started combining blockchain and business model in 2018, and since the beginning of this year, has built blockchain and applied wireless communication networks intensively in Texas, and is operating pilot services in the East and South Korea. 1775 – The Olive Branch Petition, adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 5, 1775, was signed by members of the Continental Congress. The petition was a final attempt to avoid a full-blown war between the Thirteen Colonies that the Congress represented, and Great Britain. The petition affirmed American loyalty to Great Britain and entreated the king to prevent further conflict. In August 1775 the colonies were formally declared to be in rebellion by the Proclamation of Rebellion, and the petition was rejected in fact, although not having been received by the king before declaring the Congress-supporting colonists traitors. 1776 – In Philadelphia, the Liberty Bell rings out from the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now known as Independence Hall), summoning citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, by Colonel John Nixon. On July 4, the historic document was adopted by delegates to the Continental Congress meeting in the State House. However, the Liberty Bell, which bore the apt biblical quotation, “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land unto All the Inhabitants Thereof,” was not rung until the Declaration of Independence returned from the printer on July 8. In 1751, to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of Pennsylvania’s original constitution, the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly ordered the 2,000-pound copper and tin bell constructed. After being cracked during a test, and then recast twice, the bell was hung from the State House steeple in June 1753. Rung to call the Pennsylvania Assembly together and to summon people for special announcements and events, it was also rung on important occasions, such as when King George III ascended to the throne in 1761 and to call the people together to discuss Parliament’s controversial Stamp Act of 1765. History from Long Ago and a Bit of Nature Thrown In

Another dark day here, absolutely bogging as we might say. Wet and uninviting. There’s no way I want to venture into the great outdoors despite the younger Nature Watch flagging up this helpful article.

So instead, I’ve stayed snug indoors and embarked upon a history lesson. Settle down as you could lose an afternoon on this one. I do apologise for rambling on so much, but it was one of those that once you started, you I just couldn’t stop.

On an historic day in American history, when a woman takes a presidential role for the first time, I’ve been focusing on women.

The question is do you know anything about Edith Pretty?

This is she.

Now I very much doubt that Edith Pretty is a name that springs to many people’s mind? but if it wasn’t for her, it seems Britain would have been denied one of its greatest national treasure collections.

I started off looking at Edith and her story at Sutton Hoo because I was looking into another little known but hugely influential woman who made an impact on natural history, with barely any recognition at the time and then I got side-tracked by news of The Dig, a new Netflix film, out at the end of this month - the 29th to be precise. Now I’m not a big film fan, but this tells the intriguing true story of how a wealthy and idiosyncratic widow with a ferocious sense of civic duty, lead an archaeological excavation just before the outbreak of World War II (1939-1945)

Just what I want on these horrid Winter evenings, history and mystery.

Edith had a very privileged background and travelled extensively with family in her youth, not just pleasure trips but educational journeys far and wide. The family were interested in ancient sites and antiquities and this stayed with Edith.

When she married at the age of 42 she purchased a marital home and estate named Sutton Hoo*in South East Suffolk. Frank and Edith went on to have a son born when Edith was 47, but sadly Frank only lived until the boy was four years old, after which it’s possible that Edith became more and more interested in spirituality and lives that had gone before.

Sutton Hoo derives its name from Old English. Sut combined with tun means the southern "farmstead" or "settlement" and Hoh refers to a hill "shaped like a heel spur" Wikipedia

There’s a far longer and more involved tale than I can unravel here. It started with curiosity, hunches and investigations into some strange mounds of earth in the grounds, with the help of Basil Brown. Brown, who Edith was introduced to via acquaintances, was a self-taught archaeologist with an interest in astronomy.

The mounds of earth had undoubtedly been the subject of investigation by grave robbers centuries before, but fortuitously, they’d not gone far enough to make any significant finds and the land continued to lay undisturbed. It’s incredible to think that before the qualified experts became involved, the first excavations took place using household items such as penknives, pastry brushes and bellows. The whole wonderful significance of such an impressive discovery and the way it came about, is fairly earth shattering.

Basil and Edith’s project uncovered the shape and remains of a ship which was at first thought to be Viking, but later determined to almost certainly be a burial chamber marking the death of an Anglo-Saxon king. Interred with it were many priceless, perfectly preserved gold and silver jewelled and highly decorated artefacts from the early 7th century and before. These treasures had been gathered from far and wide; the products of breathtakingly deft workmanship, which, even today, with precision tools and artificial lighting, cannot be matched easily. Some of the items seem, to me, reminiscent of Fabergé’s finest.

Cloisonné is the technique of creating designs on metal vessels with coloured glass paste. This is placed within enclosures made of copper or bronze wires, bent or hammered into the desired pattern. Known as cloisons (French for “partitions”), the enclosures generally are either pasted or soldered onto the metal body. The glass paste, or enamel, is coloured with metallic oxide and painted into the contained areas of the design. The vessel is usually fired at a relatively low temperature, about 800°C. Enamels commonly shrink after firing, and the process is repeated several times to fill in the designs. Once this process is complete, the surface of the vessel is rubbed until the edges of the cloisons are visible. They are then gilded, often on the edges, in the interior, and on the base

The collection of 263 objects included weapons, silver cutlery, gold buckles, coins, and a distinctive full-face helmet, of a kind never before recovered in Britain.

The purse lid on this Link is photographed from various angles and the standard of the materials, design and workmanship is just mind boggling, as is the condition of something which was crafted in the 7th Century.

Two other women who played a key role in documenting the investigation were Mercie Lack and Barbara Wagstaff. People I hadn’t heard of either. They were both schoolteachers who had a passion for photography and for Anglo-Saxon archaeology. As friends they had previously spent school holidays photographing carved stone for the British Museum and they brought their skills to bear on recording the early days of the Sutton Hoo excavation. They likely responded to a public appeal for photographers to help out and turned the Summer break into a holiday stay as well. Their images, many of them neatly annotated, provide a fascinating insight into the project, and include some of the earliest colour photographs from an archaeological investigation in this country. Of all the volunteers their work was the most professional.

The National Trust has undertaken a project to digitalise this collection and preserve it for posterity.

Unfortunately, as is often the way, in the dramatisation the film follows the book upon which it is based, where the author chose to replace them with a fictional (male) character. Like Edith, Mercie also bequeathed her artefacts from the dig to the British Museum. You’d really liked to have thought that the women’s contributions were recognised and noted and not airbrushed out of the story.

Incredibly, after a treasure trove inquest (August 1939 at Sutton Parish Hall) it was determined that the astounding find - which would entirely revolutionise historians’ understanding of the Anglo-Saxons - belonged not to the Crown but to the landowner and extraordinarily Edith donated the entire haul to the nation.

In 1951, having been stored in Aldwych Tube station during the war, it went on display in the British Museum - albeit with no credit, not a single namecheck, for Basil Brown. Sadly, Edith was no longer around to object. Basil was almost 90 when he died in 1977, but after suffering a blood clot on the brain, she had died in 1942, aged just 59.

1926 Edith Pretty buys the site of Sutton Hoo, and becomes fascinated by the strange mounds of earth on her land.

1939 Basil Brown discovers a funerary cache of 263 objects in tumulus 1. World War II breaks out in September.

1946 After being kept safe underground during the war, the treasure—owned by the British Museum—is put on public display.

1990s Further excavations uncover another intact burial site in tumulus 17 containing a young man, a horse, and weapons.

Rebuilding the Ship and why use Green Oak?

The Ship’s Company Team is a group of people with the collective desire to resurrect King Raedwald’s burial ship and turn the famous ghost imprint into a living reality.

Although there is no evidence left to examine the identity of the illustrious occupant of the burial ship, a strong guess is that it was possibly King Raedwald? It certainly must’ve been someone fabulously wealthy and highly regarded. The Sutton Hoo sword video from the British Museum at the end of this blog is very well worth a watch, exploring more about the man.

Within the ship, archaeologists found various treasures from across both the British Isles as well as the Byzantine (eastern Roman) and Frankish (western European) empires — including the famed Sutton Hoo helmet.

The grave itself is thought to belong to King Rædwald of East Anglia, a member of the Wuffingas dynasty which has been associated with the Wulfing clan of Sweden, who appeared in the Old English epic poem Beowulf.

So there we are, you can see how I became utterly absorbed and went from internet site to site following all the history. BTCBAM - an overview of the cryptocurrency mining company

What is the project about ?

BTC BAM is a Vienna-based cryptocurrency mining company managed by entrepreneurs and professionals. It was founded by “ALKAN KG VIENNA”, a crypto money enthusiast and entrepreneur group that has been engaged in different commercial activities for many years. The company’s vision was to create a platform that allows anyone, anywhere in the world, to earn through mining.

MINING

As you probably know, Bitcoin and many other cryptocurrencies are decentralized. Centralization means that the responsibilities to support the blockchain are spread among all cryptocurrency network users around the world. Various blockchains do not rely on a specific person, group, country for support. Support here means legitimizing blockchain transactions and monitoring the cryptocurrency network

Miners check and verify previous transactions. Doing so eliminates the possibility of “double spend”. Mining is done by computing a 64-digit hash. Of course miners don’t bother for fun. Finding the hashes of the 1 MB (I Block) transaction or the equivalent of the hash that needs to be calculated, a miner requests a reward.

This principle is called Proof of Work (PoW). Removing a trading block earns a reward that is currently 6.25 BTC. This amount will be halved again (3,125 BTC) at the next Bitcoin Halving scheduled for 2024. The last one happened on May 11, 2020.

PROBLEM

he concept of mining started with the invention of Bitcoin about 10 years ago. It was pretty easy in the beginning. However, over time, it became difficult to beat other miners to find suitable hashes of a transaction block. Not many users were mining Bitcoin in 2009, which probably explains the ease of mining. The growing popularity of Bitcoin, coupled with the corresponding difficulty of the mathematical puzzles that come with validating a transaction, means that miners need relatively large computing power to increase their chances of defeating other miners in solving transactions and thus gaining block rewards. This fact turned mining into a big business. For this reason, large companies with sufficient budget allocation set up mining rigs with great computing power. These companies receive most of the block rewards. The situation described above means that the profitability of mining is now a protection of these companies.

SOLUTION

POOL MINING

As highlighted above, the difficulty of computing mathematical puzzles of an operation has increased significantly over time. The miners came up with the idea of consolidating resources in pools. Pool mining means sharing computing power to increase the chance of validating transactions on the blockchain. However, the higher the chance, the lower the profitability as it is shared proportionately among all the miners who contribute computing resources. The available share for each miner depends on the hash rates it provides. For this reason, those who start mining first earn more profit than those who start later.

CLOUD MINING

It has been found that miners with insufficient capital and equipment investment can still mine BTC profitably. But what if you have insufficient resources and are not familiar with mining? Is it possible to access profitable mining resources regardless of your location? Well, if you answered yes to all these questions, cloud mining might be what you need. Thanks to cloud mining, you can lease computing power and mine BTC without the need for hardware. However, in order to get high income, you need to make a very high rental transaction, and it is possible to find the equivalent of such an investment among other investment tools

Black Girl Magic: A Rise in Fantasy Representation on Screen

"Black Girl Magic” is a phrase coined in 2013 by blogger CaShawn Thompson, in “celebration of the beauty, intelligence and power of Black women everywhere.” It has since become a rallying cry for black women of different backgrounds to celebrate their accomplishments and moments together in sisterhood. But unlike the phrase and recent movement behind it, “Black Girl Magic” in the literal sense has rarely been showcased at the forefront of film and television. There are many film franchises and shows built on fantasy or supernatural stories, but these largely feature white casts and protagonists. Since the 1990s, however, more black women with magical abilities have moved to center stage.

Rochelle Zimmerman - The Craft, 1996

An outcast at her Los Angeles school because of her skin color, Rochelle befriends girls on the fringe who form a coven to regain power over their teenage lives. Rochelle is not only one of the witches in the main cast, but a skilled swimmer whose goal is to make the high school team. When this is hindered by a racist school bully, Rochelle aptly casts a spell to make the girl’s hair fall out. In addition to this, she has the power of telekinesis, levitation, and glamouring. Though left without power at the end of this cautionary tale, Rochelle is a rare portrayal of black women unapologetically using their power towards their own goals.

Eve Batiste, Mozelle Batiste Delacroix, Elzora - Eve’s Bayou, 1997

This trio took African-American cinema to new heights in its portrayal of black women with clairvoyance and voodoo. Eve, the youngest, finds her dreams to be visions of tragedy to come. Her gift of sight mirrors her aunt Mozelle’s, a woman who not only has visions, but reads people’s lives by holding their hands. Mozelle also sparingly uses voodoo to help customers if they’re desperate enough. Eve and Mozelle encounter Elzora, an elderly woman who tells fortunes at the market and proves to be quite twisted. The three are brought together in a tragic coming-of-age tale in which Eve takes on her troubled family one summer in a Louisiana bayou.

Memory is the selection of images, some elusive, others printed indelibly on the brain. Each image is like a thread, each thread woven together to make a tapestry of intricate texture. Raven Baxter - That’s So Raven, 2003 - 2007

Dealing with friendships, boys, and dreams of becoming a fashion designer, a huge part of Raven’s life are her psychic visions of the future. She’s very insecure about being seen as a freak if anyone finds out, but also has unique experiences and life lessons during her adolescence in San Francisco because of her gift. Raven afforded many children and teens a lighthearted, relatable portrayal of Black Girl Magic in comedy. She returns as the star of spinoff and sequel series Raven’s Home, which aired in July 2017 and is set in Chicago.

Alex and Cam - Twitches, 2005, & Twitches Too, 2007

Cam and Alex discover their powers and one another on their 21st birthday, and soon find out that they belong to a world of witches and warlocks called Coventry that they were taken from at birth for their own safety. They must save the day in both films, using their combined powers that coincide with the sun and moon. This portrayal of witches is on the spectrum between previously-mentioned Raven Baxter, an original TV character, and the upcoming Bonnie Bennett, another book character that undergoes a race lift for the TV adaptation.

Bonnie Bennett and The Bennett Family - The Vampire Diaries, 2009 - 2017

Bonnie discovers her penchant for witchcraft as a teenager when her best friend gets involved with vampires. She goes on a journey of honing her powers, learning from her grandmother Sheila that they hail from a long line of matriarchal witches. They are descendants of Emily Bennett, who was a powerful witch in Mystic Falls, VA in the 19th century, as well as one of the most powerful witches of all time, Qetsiyah. Bonnie experiments with both dark and natural magic, eventually developing the powers of divination, healing, necromancy, and psychokinesis (aero, bio, pyro, and tele). Through Bonnie’s storyline, audiences have an example of Black Girl Magic through several generations of powerful women in the same family.

Queenie and Marie Laveau - American Horror Story: Coven, 2013 - 2014

Queenie, a new student at Miss Robichaux’s Academy in New Orleans, is descended from Tituba of the Salem Witch Trials, and calls herself a “human voodoo doll,” able to transfer self-inflicted wounds and pain to others. She later performs telekinesis, teleportation, mind control, and astral projection. For a time, Queenie joins the fold of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau, based on the real-life, renowned figure. Marie survives to modern times because of an immortality deal with Papa Legba, in which she must sacrifice an innocent once a year. In addition to her voodoo mastery, Marie demonstrates telekinesis, teleportation, necromancy, and a war cry that causes people to turn on one another. Both Queenie and Marie take on an immortal racist and other threats in the war between hunters, voodoo practitioners, and witches in this campy, dark story.

Abbie & Jenny Mills - Sleepy Hollow, 2013 - 2017

Abbie, who has prophetic dreams, learns that she is one of Two Witnesses in the Book of Revelation meant to prevent the apocalypse with Ichabod Crane. A Lieutenant originally headed to the FBI, she remains in Sleepy Hollow, NY to rise to the cause. She can also see spirits, have visions of the past, and assist with casting spells. Her sister Jenny is drawn into the fight, having seen the demon Moloch when they were children, as a supernatural relic hunter. This is one of the rare portrayals of black women, fantasy, and the Bible coming together.

“Here's what we can do: no more first-hand accounts of witches or founding fathers. Or donut tax outrage unless you want to be sent back to the asylum.” - Abbie

These portrayals of Black Girl Magic, which feature characters who have storylines independent of their white counterparts, are markedly different from “The Magical Negro” stereotype in cinema. The Magical Negro was first seen with The Song of the South (1946), but mostly lends itself to male characters. The handful of black women who fall into this category are Oda Mae Brown in Ghost (1990); Mother Abagail in adapted miniseries The Stand (1994); Jezelle Gay Hartman in Jeepers Creepers (2001); Missouri Moseley on a single episode (2005) of Supernatural; and Evelyn in Annabelle (2014). These characters have no purpose in the story beyond helping white ones, even going so far as to sacrifice themselves in some instances.

Black Girl Magic speaks to a beauty and power that black women have on their own, as evidenced by stronger characters in TV and film recently. Fortunately, the road doesn’t end here. Coming to television soon are actresses Sibongile Mlambo in the role of a mermaid on the Freeform show Siren, and Clark Backo in the role of a psychic and descendent of Supernatural’s Missouri Moseley on Wayward Sisters at The CW. On the big screen, expect to see Oprah Winfrey in the role of Mrs. Which for Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time in 2018.

As black women continue to see the magic within themselves, they can now see even more of it represented on screen.

Harriet Tubman $20 Bill Is Delayed Until Trump Leaves Office, Mnuchin Says

Currently, The 7th U.S. President Andrew Jackson, a populist hero who owned slaves, has appeared on the $20 bill since 1928. Should he be replaced on the bill by Harriet Tubman,who was born into slavery, escaped and then returned to the South, where she led other slaves to freedom, and a Union scout during the Civil War and later advocated women’s voting rights: (1) Yes, (2) No? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?

Harriet Tubman — former slave, abolitionist, “conductor” on the Underground Railroad — will not become the face of the $20 bill until after President Trump leaves office, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday.

Plans to unveil the Tubman bill in 2020, an Obama administration initiative, would be postponed until at least 2026, Mr. Mnuchin said, and the bill itself would not likely be in circulation until 2028.

Until then, bills with former President Andrew Jackson’s face will continue to pour out of A.T.M.s and fill Americans’ wallets.

Mr. Mnuchin, concerned that the president might create an uproar by canceling the new bill altogether, was eager to delay its redesign until Mr. Trump was out of office, some senior Treasury Department officials have said. As a presidential candidate in 2016, Mr. Trump criticized the Obama administration’s plans for the bill.

That April, Mr. Trump called the change “pure political correctness” and suggested that Tubman, whom he praised, could be added to a far less common denomination, like the $2 bill. “Andrew Jackson had a great history, and I think it’s very rough when you take somebody off the bill,” Mr. Trump said at the time.

Mr. Trump has frequently described Jackson, whose portrait hangs in the Oval Office, as a populist hero who reminds him of himself. Two months into his presidency, Mr. Trump stopped to lay a wreath at Jackson’s tomb at the Hermitage, his plantation in Nashville. “It was during the Revolution that Jackson first confronted and defied an arrogant elite,” Mr. Trump told a crowd gathered there. “Does that sound familiar?”

The delay comes three years after Mr. Mnuchin’s predecessor, Jacob J. Lew, announced plans for a sweeping and symbolic redrawing of the currency that would see Tubman replace the slaveholding Jackson on the face of the note.

Treasury Department officials did not say whether Mr. Trump had a hand in the decision, and Mr. Mnuchin would not say whether he himself believes that Tubman should be on the bill’s face. “I’ve made no decision as it relates to that,” Mr. Mnuchin said Wednesday at a congressional hearing in response to a question from Representative Ayanna S. Pressley, Democrat of Massachusetts.

During the hearing, Mr. Mnuchin said that he was now focused on enhancing the anti-counterfeiting security features of the currency, focusing first on the $10 and $50 bills. Designing new imagery is on the back burner.

“It is my responsibility now to focus on what is the issue of counterfeiting and the security features,” Mr. Mnuchin said. “The ultimate decision on the redesign will most likely be another secretary down the road.”

Replacing Jackson with Tubman was both filled with symbolism and marred by controversy.

Tubman was born into slavery, escaped and then returned to the South, where she led other slaves to freedom. She was a Union scout during the Civil War and later advocated women’s voting rights. Jackson orchestrated the removal of Native Americans from lands to the east of the Mississippi River and sent them marching west on the so-called Trail of Tears.

In 2017, speculation began that Mr. Trump might scrap Mr. Lew’s plan for the $20 bill when mentions of it were scrubbed from the Treasury Department’s website during a redesign.

Then, that August, Mr. Mnuchin made clear that Tubman’s future on the bill was in doubt.

“People have been on the bills for a long period of time,” he told CNBC. “This is something we’ll consider. Right now, we’ve got a lot more important issues to focus on.”

Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Democrat of New Hampshire, recently introduced the Harriet Tubman Tribute Act and called on the Treasury Department to offer clarity on the status of the $20 bill. The legislation, if passed, would direct the department to place the likeness of Tubman on $20 Federal Reserve notes printed after Dec. 31, 2020.

“There is no excuse for the administration’s failure to make this redesign a priority,” Ms. Shaheen said. “Sadly, this delay sends an unmistakable message to women and girls, and communities of color, who were promised they’d see Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill.”

Supporters of the tribute act in the House — including Representatives Elijah E. Cummings, Democrat of Maryland, and John Katko, Republican of New York — also expressed frustration with the Trump administration over the delay.

“The administration’s decision to drag their feet and delay the redesign of the $20 until 2028 is unacceptable,” Mr. Cummings said in a statement. “Our currency must reflect the important role women, and especially women of color, have played in our nation’s history.”

Former Obama administration officials have been quiet about Tubman during the past two years, hopeful that Mr. Trump would forget about the plan and allow it to proceed.

Mr. Lew, through a spokeswoman, had no comment on Wednesday. But Gene Sperling, the former director of President Barack Obama’s National Economic Council, assailed Mr. Mnuchin on Twitter for embracing Mr. Trump’s divisiveness.

“Today Mnuchin pathetically announces that Tubman on $20 will be delayed till 2028 — meaning their goal is never,” he tweeted.

Women have appeared on United States currency a handful of times, often on seldom-used $1 coins. In the 19th century, Pocahontas and Martha Washington were the first women to make it onto American currency — and the last to make it onto paper.

Pocahontas appeared among a group of men on the $10 bill and the $20 bill in the late 19th century. Washington was on $1 silver certificates in 1886, 1891 and 1896.

The suffragist Susan B. Anthony was the first woman to appear on an American coin: a dollar produced from 1979-81 and again, briefly, in 1999. But originally, the Treasury Department planned to depict the allegorical Lady Liberty. It was not until legislators and activists objected that the department agreed to honor a real-life woman.

In 2015, Mr. Lew started a 10-month process to develop a plan that was initially intended to honor a female historical figure on the $10 bill, replacing Alexander Hamilton. After much controversy, consternation and public debate — in part because of the popularity of the musical “Hamilton,” which is based on the secretary’s life — Mr. Lew changed course and instead made plans for a vignette of suffragists to be put on the back of the $10 and for Tubman to become the face of the $20 bill.

On Wednesday, activists from the group Women on 20s, which helped push Tubman to the prominence of the $20 bill, were disappointed but hopeful that the delay would avoid meddling from Mr. Trump.

“At Women On 20s, we’re not surprised that Secretary Mnuchin may be kicking the design reveal of the $20 bill to sometime beyond the potential interference of a Trump presidency,” the group said in a statement calling on Congress to pass legislation to add Tubman to the currency. “As we’ve been saying for years, symbols do matter.”

Places to Shoot in Bangkok Part 1: Baiyoke Schmaiyoke

I thought it might be good to go into some detail of specific shooting locations in and around Bangkok, starting here with August’s entry to the blog. Just in case it causes confusion for any regular readers, these will be posted here as separate monthly blog entries AND also added to the bottom of the seemingly ever popular ‘Ultimate Guide’ (click the tab header at the top of this page).

I thought that a good way to start this little series might be by addressing the elephant in the room, the Baiyoke Tower. It’s actually the Baiyoke Tower II as the original is a slightly smaller building nearby but for all intents and purposes, when you say ‘Baiyoke Tower’ or ‘Duk Baiyok’(in appalling phonetically spelled out English/Thai), people in Bangkok think of this:

It was up until very recently, clearly the tallest building in Bangkok, and by quite some margin. It still towers way above all of the other buildings anywhere in the immediate area. It was also for a long time the holder of one of those Guinness Book of World Records titles, but only on a sort of technicality. It was sort of true to say that it used to be the world’s tallest hotel but this statement needs a disclaimer; the tallest hotel building that is only 100% a dedicated hotel. There are certainly always hotel rooms around the world located within other, taller buildings but these buildings may not be dedicated hotels in their own right. On those grounds, the Baiyoke II was able to hold this claim to fame for quite a while. In fact, if you believe the blurb on site, it apparently still holds the records but this is patently false. There are now several dedicated 100% hotel buildings that are taller and newer in the Middle-East but of course this would be a huge hit to the selling point of the Baiyoke tower. Even now you will see the old (now false) claims emblazoned all over the place when you visit, not unsurprisingly nobody seems in any great rush to update the posters and ‘fess up to the truth that they are currently hovering around 7th place at best!

The Baiyoke Tower is accessed via Pratunam, a generally busy (and sometimes a tad shady) market area mostly famous for wholesale cheap clothing including all the usual knock-off suspects. It’s not directly on the skytrain but any motorcycle, tuk-tuk or taxi driver will take you straight there in a flash. You’ll see lots of central Asians and Africans milling around the area as well as all kinds of Thais looking to sell you visits to erotic massage parlours and illegal drugs.

The main reason I am starting this series with mention of this place is actually because it is potentially something of an anti-climax from a photographic point of view and I have had so many people writing in to ask me about it that I decided to just do a post about it for general future reference instead.

I first shot from there back in the mid 90’s with a cheap (but very faithful) old entry level Nikon film SLR, a tripod that would snap if you sneezed anywhere near it and a budget Tamron zoom lens (I know my blog has more than its fair share of elitist and expensive camera kit snobbery but in the past I have also spent many a year using cheaper, humble kit quite happily!). The conclusions that I drew way back then are still basically my view of this location now, it’s nice to go once (and there are some chances to strike gold) but for shooting it’s not always that great. Here’s why:

Firstly, at the very top, it’s too far above the horizon line of the city for the nice shots that you imagined you might get. It’s not impossible, there’s some nice stuff out there on the net that you can find from people, but it’s not nearly as good as you think it’s gonna be. Secondly, the open viewing platform at the very top has a lot of wire fencing in the way obscuring a lot of your view. This is made worse by the fact that this deck is also basically quite a crude metal platform which rotates you around as you stand still (sometimes this breaks down, depends on the day). The rotation is certainly not that finely engineered, not at all smooth and this is a real pain when you consider that you might well need to be using a tripod on top of it. There will also be lots of people up there moving around that you will have to work around in terms of framing your shots and if it’s really busy this can be a nightmare. Added to this bundle of photographic ‘no-go’ joy is the fact that the winds at such an altitude are also really liable to be strong and mess up camera stability. As if that wasn’t enough, you really need an unusually clear Bangkok weather day for it to work at all, and that isn’t always guaranteed, not to mention the bright smog pollution effect sometimes raining on your parade. One thing that can work up there (if you have all your ducks in a row) is if you can get a camera locked pointing down at a nice angle and then then shoot off a long series of frames for digital editing into a 180 (or even full 360) panorama with some kind of stitching tool. I have done this myself with reasonable success a long time ago. Long exposure, blur effects and other high altitude arty shots are also a possibility.

Okay, so is there anything else we can salvage from this train wreck? Any other possibilities?

Well, maybe. Before you ascend to the outside, uppermost rotating platform, you will have had to climb up a couple of sets of stairs from the highest of the indoor observation floors. This allows you all the Bangkok vista that you could ever wish for but from a solid, fixed footing with no problems of wind, weather or movement. However, as with everything else in life there is a trade-off: It comes in the form of the very thick safety glass windows that you will see the world through up there. There are possibilities to shoot through the glass without too much of a glare debacle but it’s not always easy to do if you want decent image IQ. Sure, there will be masses of people quite happy with how these shots look on their smartphones up there but for dedicated photographers looking for high quality images, this just won’t be good enough. There are coin operated telescopes all around up here at the best spots so anybody using one of those nearby in light-coloured clothing will probably end up reflected into your shot. You might do well with some kind of lens hood that you can actually press up to the window, literally touching it on the glass as you set a camera up for a shot on a tripod and countdown the shutter using a timer-enhanced, minimal movement exposure.

Other options might be to come to the Baiyoke Tower (on the indoor floors again maybe?) before sunset and shoot from there without all the horrible direct overhead light, it’s much more likely to offer some beautiful shots (IF you get the weather right, some of the best sunsets can be towards the end of the year as the rains give way to the cooler season with ethereal colours abound). This can be a real ‘two for one’ kind of deal as if you don’t get lucky with the second half of the photographic golden hour as the sun goes down, you are then in for a treat with what is perhaps the only side of the Baiyoke Tower experience that I think is actually worth going there for as a photographer….NIGHT EXPOSURES!

Looking down at a smorgasbord of Bangkok lights and cityscape with all its traffic at night is actually pretty awesome by anybody’s standards. This is a time when you can get some real joy. There is still the problem of (night) reflections from the glass there though but by using a hood and tripod and shooting when there is nobody near you, a patient shooter can get some really good results. In the digital age, when everybody and his dog can shoot long exposures and simply chimp off a screen to see if they like what they got or not (not hating, but it’s a lot easier nowadays!), there are a lot more people up there shooting than there used to be. Back in the film days, long night time exposures required at least a modicum of decent photographic technique and knowledge combined with a bit of maths and some luck. There hardly used to be anybody up there at night with a camera. After a lot of searching I found this very modest effort of mine that I shot with the aforementioned (very) low budget Nikon film SLR and cheapo zoom and tripod 22 years ago. I don’t seem to have the original negs anymore so this already mediocre shot is not helped in its presentation here on this site by beinga scan of the actual printed photograph (circa mid 90’s). Although it's not anything to be that proud of, it was hard to earn and a lesser seen kind of shot back in its day! It gives you an idea and at least shows that people have been doing this for a while. Would still be fun to get up there at night nowadays with a film camera and some high ISO film to see what could be done, I'm sure.

Of course, as with everything else in the perpetual building site that is modern Bangkok, even this part of the city has now changed beyond recognition, this is actually looking down onto the old ‘World Trade Centre’ (now known as ‘Central World’).

I don’t know the exact costs off hand nowadays to go up the Baiyoke Tower as the price might vary from year to year and various seasons. It’s not too much, a few hundred baht at the most. There’s also a large buffet restaurant up there close to the top but although it was once a reasonably okay affair, I ate there again two or three years ago and it had definitely slipped down from ‘quite passable’ to ‘blatantly sub-par’ even by Bangkok two/ three star standards (oooh what a snob).

You generally need to take two lifts, the first one will get you up to a large and very noisy reception kind of floor where you then have to decide if you want to pay 'the full monty' to go up to the upper floors or not and the tickets are issued there. You are then fed into a line that leads to the other lifts that go up about another eighty floors or so. It’s quite the fast run up and you can sometimes even feel your ears pop as you go. For cheapskates, be aware that at certain times of the day (very late afternoon to be more specific), one really can get some very solid cityscape sunset opportunities just from the lower reception floor alone as it is already quite high up and has some huge windows and vistas on offer. That’s assuming you can get any peace or quiet from the tourist groups, in fact whilst I am on that subject…

Please be warned that, as with lots of touristy spots in Bangkok in recent years, this place has the tendency to be overrun by busloads of mainland Chinese tourists who might have a different idea about how to behave in public than a Westerner might. The tour leader (often a Chinese speaking Thai but sometimes a Chinese national working illegally as foreigners are prohibited from tour guide work in Thailand) will often simply either not be willing, ready or able to reign them in either and it can be quitea shock. Lots of shouting very loudly just for the purposes of a ‘normal’ conversation, pushing, shoving (even some spitting on the floor indoors when I last went) and general lack of respect for basic decorum in a public place can really put a downer on things. I wish I could put a more positive spin on that but it is difficult, I am trying not to judge but that was honestly my impression of the situation, maybe it's better at other times and I just got unlucky.... sorry if anybody disagrees or is offended.

The whole feel of the Baiyoke Tower is as with much of the Bangkok constructions of that era (80’s and very early 90’s), it’s generally a bit of a run down, old ‘former glory’ vibe that looks like they might have to close it soon, but yet it still somehow keeps crawling along year after year just fine. I know about the theory of too big to fail but what about too tall to fail? To be fair, I’ve never actually stayed in it as a hotel. I doubt it would be that impressive though.

So...I'm sorry if the first installment of places to shoot reads more like a place to not shoot (I really must split my infinitives more often, to hell with grammatical convention) but it’s just somewhere that I thought really warranted dealing with before I look elsewhere. Consider this case closed.

The 1,000 Club - Altcoins From the Depths

Ah, the 1,000 Club – where 24 hour volume range between $0 and the price of a good pair of shoes. Where blockchains abandoned by their developers go to die. Where a 500% daily spike can be caused by a few hundred dollars worth of trades.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. In our random trawling through the coins ranked 1000-1099, we’ve also uncovered some unlikely gems; although they’re few and far between amid a sea of joke-coins, scams and just plain old bad ideas.

With that said, let’s take a look at some of the coins which are languishing in the 1000 Club.

Cannation Coin #1010

Cannation is unlikely to remain in the 1010th spot for long as it continues to make good on its 49% gains over the last day. In the last 36 hours Cannation Coin jumped 280% – but this was a recovery from losses incurred earlier.

Cannation Coin joins the burgeoning ranks of ‘pot coins’, where the (sometimes vague) aim of the project is to promote and/or increase the profile of the legal cannabis market.

Cannation launched in May 2017 and grew steadily all the way up to January 14th when CNNC coins were priced at $0.39. However the subsequent crash carried on for the last six months to leave CNNC at a price of $0.01 – marking a 97.31% bloodletting for the once promising pot coin.

Cannation has a total 24 hour volume of $2,310 with 97% of that coming from CoinExchange. CNNC is also listed on YoBit and NovaExchange, while its listing on Cryptopia was brought to an end on June 7th.

The cannationcoin.com website is dead and doesn’t look to be coming back any time soon. The Bitcointalk forum thread is remarkably small for a coin launched over a year ago, but is still being occupied by a few enthusiasts.

Without casting aspersions: it would be easy to jump to the conclusion that Cannation Coin was a fugazi – a basically useless ICO launched in a weekend by some opportunistic money-makers. Such a coin probably wouldn’t take hold today, but in mid-2017 there was still room to grab people’s attention with a cannabis-focused altcoin.

Carboncoin #1058

The Carboncoin blockchain has been up and running since 2014, but besides a 600% spike in January the coin has failed to gain traction, recording typical daily trading volumes of a few hundred dollars.

The project aimed to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to cryptocurrency mining by planting a tree for every set amount of CARBON coins mined.

For much of the coin’s lifetime it was priced at 1 satoshi. During January’s peak that price rose to 12 satoshi.

Control over the project has changed hands since launch, and some recent activity posted on Medium suggests the current developers are gearing up for another big push. A new ICO is being launched, with current CARBON holders being urged to hand their coins in for a new version of Carboncoin.

Many users on Bitcointalk have denounced this is a scam, with some claiming to have lost their coins to the scheme already.

Where Carboncoin goes from here remains to be seen, but a meagre 24 volume of $18 just a couple of days ago suggests that a huge marketing push would be needed to jumpstart a climb up the rankings.

PutinCoin #1054

The landing page of the PutinCoin website describes its function as being to serve as a tribute to both the President and the people of ‘…one of the largest and greatest country (sic) in the world: Russia!’.

The PutinCoin blockchain uses both PoW (Proof of Work) and PoS (Proof of Stake) in its confirmation algorithm, and promises the usual mix of fast transactions and low fees.

While January 2018 saw a strong performance by PutinCoin, its best performance actually came in 2017 when 1 PUT coin reached a price of $0.04. Indeed, 2017 was kind to PutinCoin in general, and PUT coins regularly recorded a price exponentially greater than its current price of $0.003.

PutinCoin disappeared off the map in 2018, and has a 24 hour volume of $300 at the time of writing. However, it has also managed to remain listed on numerous exchanges, including Cryptopia, Livecoin, CoinExchange, TradeSatoshi and Crex24.

As with many of these coins down in the low 1000’s, there is uncertainty as to whether or not PutinCoin is a scam. A lack of response by developers has led many to believe the project lacks authenticity, while there remain some forum members who vouch for coin’s future potential.

BiblePay # 1039

BiblePay is a Christian-oriented blockchain which donates 10% of its funds to charities and non-profit organizations. The project is sponsor to over 300 orphans on a monthly basis, and encodes the King James Bible in its transactions in what it terms a Proof-of-Bible (PoB) hash.

BiblePay is currently is something of a lull, having crashed around 50% since its recent high point on April 15th. One BBP coin is currently priced at $0.002703, which is 78% less than it was during the gold rush of January.

The BiblePay thread on Bitcointalk.org is still very active to this day. An enthusiastic group of volunteers continue to develop and refine the blockchain, and its economic rankings are ultimately not reflective of its overall popularity. The project only launched in November of 2017, and there’s still plenty of time for BiblePay to climb the market cap ladder.

42-Coin #1057

What if I told you that one of the most expensive coins in the top 1628 cryptocurrencies was the coin ranked at number 1057 by market cap?

Because that’s the case for 42-Coin, which holds the unique virtue of only having 42 coins in circulation.

42-Coin debuted in January of 2014 at a price of $1,013,620. Popularity cooled on 42, and the value of the coin fell to a mere $38.41 by August 2016.

However 42 then got swept along by the growing market throughout 2017, and by January of 2018 had reached a unit value of $91,000.

Two-thirds of those gains have since been lost, but 42-Coin still ranks an overall third for the cryptocurrency with the highest face value. The title of most expensive cryptocurrency was previously held by 42-Coin, but it eventually lost out to Project-X and Bit20, which recorded token values of $2,530,660 and $1,702,440 respectively.

As the website landing page states:

“42 – the answer to life, the universe, and everything…”

If that isn’t enough to get your investment then I don’t know what is.

Woodcoin #1072

You’d be forgiven for thinking this was another of those ‘mine a coin – plant a tree’ platforms, but Woodcoin actually has a lot more going for it than just replanting the rainforest.

Woodcoin seeks to find the sweet-spot between inflation and stagnation by growing logarithmically (LOG). This means that mining rewards decrease at a set rate, and that coins mined right now will always be worth more than coins mined tomorrow.

Unlike Bitcoin and Litecoin who released half of their coin supply in the first 4 years, Woodcoin will release theirs over 200 years.

No pre-mine or ICO took place during Woodcoin’s launch. Its blockchain has been operating since way back in 2014, without any fork, interference, or influence in that time.

At the time of writing, Woodcoin’s 24 hour volume stands at $39. One LOG coin is worth $0.09 – which is almost half the level it achieved in April, and a four-fold decrease from January’s peak of $0.39.

The forum chatter is limited, and developers don’t show themselves very often. Don’t expect Woodcoin to sprout and grow any time soon.

PiggyCoin #1094

Not many cryptocurrencies are specifically aimed at children, but that’s exactly what sets PiggyCoin apart from the competition.

The only trouble is that it doesn’t seem to have helped. PIGGY coins have halved in value since March, and the 24 hour trading volume has sunk to $402, from a respectable low-six figures recorded in January.

It’s not clear how much input the original developers still have in the project. The only posts on their blog in the last year relate to exchange delistings, with no news of upcoming developments being posted in a long time.

The idea behind PiggyCoin is novel, and we may eventually see some version of it succeed one day. PiggyCoin’s website and wallet is designed to educate children about sensible economics, while also introducing them to cryptocurrency. Several games exist on the website, mostly based around the eponymous Pig.

Regardless of its recent performance, PiggyCoin has still experienced a tremendous 600% growth since the time of its ICO, going from a coin price of $0.000129 up to its current value of $0.000967.

So there we have it – another handful of lurkers from the depths of the market capitalization charts. Whether this article inspires you to buy up some PutinCoin, or to simply never venture past the Top-100 ever again is entirely up to you.
