Happy birthday to the best boi! DUCK!!!

So I have a head canon that all engines have a section of wall in the sheds that is dedicated to all of their big achievements. It’s to help them feel better when their sad, but also to remember some highs. So I drew a small section of Duck’s wall.

Top left:

This is a picture of Duck and Stepney not long after they double headed the express after the class 40 diesel failed. I feel like Stepney and Duck’s friendship is often over looked. I head cannon that their drivers totally write letters for the other engines to read.

Top right:

This is a picture of Duck having a Great Western Railway conversation with his idol The City of Truro. I would have loved to hear their conversations.

Bottom left:

This is a picture of Donald with Dilly. I feel like it is often forgotten that Duck was very important in Donald acquiring Dilly. So Duck is clearly Dilly’s second father.

Bottom right:

This is a picture of Oliver and Duck on the Little Western. It didn’t become a real Little Western until Oliver joined Duck on the line. They have such an amazing dynamic together that I wish we had more stories about them too.

On the far right is a flag that Duck received from when he helped save a man in the regatta all those years ago. This feels like something Duck would have kept for all those years and smiles every time he sees it.

Similar experiences = Empathetic Comfort 💙💚

In the Sodor Spirits AU, both Thomas and Oliver went through incredibly horrific past experiences (Thomas being a veteran of a spirit war with many human casualties and Oliver going through hell on his Great Western branch just for being a metal spirit before escaping to Sodor.) with the two of them dealing with in different ways. Thomas putting on a smile, pretending he’s alright and constantly going on adventures and getting himself into chaotic trouble to cope. Oliver on the other hand; closes himself off with a blasé and dour demeanour and doesn’t want anything to do with his Great Western heritage.

Despite their opposite personalities, they were both drawn to each other when they first met and managed to come together again after drifting away initially due to their separate work on different branchlines. Both Thomas and Oliver are able to emphasise and take comfort in each other’s presence and words, not feeling alone anymore in their suffering and becoming closer and closer after confessing their feelings for one another.

As the day wore on, the cool late-autumn weather drew across the island. As Edward puffed back into his station, he found it was empty, and there were no trains for a while.

"Good!" Said the driver, "Once we finish tidying the yard, we can have a good lunch break before we leave out again."

So after a great deal of shunting, they parked Edward in a siding, damped his fire, sheeted him snug with a large tarp like a cloak, and promised to be back as soon as they were done.

Edward, simmering nicely, was about to drift off for a snooze, when suddenly, he found he had some surprise visitors. A bird was perched on his buffer, and two squirrels and even a rabbit had clambered onto his footplate.

"Why hello there!" he greeted warmly. The little animals twittered as they nestled under the cloak and his warm boiler.

The old engine smiled. "Well, you lot are more than welcome to stay before I have to leave for my next train," he said, and so they did, as he rested peacefully.

@avaford2009 requested me to draw Edward wearing a hooded cape cloak, talking to some animal friends, rather unexpected for my first ask! After searching account for a bit more context, I figured it was to be Edward as a human, but I ultimately went with him as an engine as that was easier to work with, so my deepest apologies! As for the animals, I decided to go with the ones from the S15 episode, Percy's New Friends, not a good episode obviously, but I suppose it's a smidge more tolerable than other particular episodes from the likes of the Nitrogen era. Anyway, that's what got me a little more creative as I came up with the cute little snippet story, hopefully I can write longer stories and post them here at some point. Enjoy!

An animation test with Thomas' smoke puff as well as the right side rod and the track animated.

While the drawing of Thomas may look polished, there are details missing such as a driver and fireman's ladder. But to give an idea how the rod was animated I had to keep it like this.

Also, for consistency, I made both bufferbeams and buffers line up. Making it perhaps one of, if not a consistent design of Thomas right next to Alexander Reginald Payne and John Theodore Eardley Kenney.

Lastly, is the smoke puff trail. I'll admit, it's not my best as it is difficult to do it in an animation scene and making it realistic. But I did my best and I really like the end result.
