ok here's my headcannons for the disco elysium swap!AU post game life that i may or may not be playing out on the sims atm
we all agree that kim is so disillusioned that he quits the RCM in some badass yet dignified way and goes into his full rebellious phase: tats, piercings, sluttier outfits, machoism and vulgarity, also a bit more loudly gay, very "queers bash back" vibes
harry is also disillusioned by everything and quits the RCM to prioritize recovery, and something about this level of commitment shows kim and jean that this is it, this is gonna be the attempt that sticks
jean can now finally build his own legacy with the RCM without being trapped in harry's shadow, and he likes the feeling of empowerment, but he also sees seedier underbellies of corruption within the RCM that even he can't stomach, or maybe he just can't tolerate ugliness like that these days. he thinks about eventually quitting too, maybe in a few years, but they need the money right now because:
Cunoesse Redemption Arc: they're literally driving back after illegally adopting cuno, and the kid gets cold feet about leaving cunoesse behind so he screams until they pull over on the side of the highway. turns out cunoesse is hiding out in a squat, they send cuno in to go talk to her. she actually swallows her pride and accepts her one ticket out of poverty and the guys respect that, so everyone starts off on a blank slate
jean is like, well, let's be realistic, we can all live in my apartment while C + C + harry go through the initial stages of withdrawals and we'll support each other for a tough few weeks. harry and kim will give up their leases and they'll pool their money together and figure out how to buy a crappy little house while the kids catch up on school
no one even has their shoes off yet when punk!kim stops them all and says, look, there's going to be homosexual activity in this house and if the kids even think of making a homophobic joke they'll be kicked to the curb, and everyone just mind their got damn business about it (i.e don't let it leave the house). the kids are lowkey scared of angry kim so they just nod
and thus kim and harry are at liberty to figure out their feelings for each other, and the fusion of their love lowkey saves harry's life and helps him get better
jean has a spare room that's more of a closet, and it just stores some boxes and a sad little weight lifting set that's covered in dust. he sells it for quick cash, then he and kim build a set of bunk beds while harry and the kids are taking turns vomiting their guts out in the bathroom
jean and kim make a surprisingly good team - they find creative solutions to the lack of space. they take turns playing nurse during the cold-turkey-ultra-detox
jean and kim come to a shared, silent, conclusion that, for the first time, they are not Doing All Of This because they need the control or want to retain professionalism, in fact it doesn't feel like labour at all because it's genuinely coming from a place of love
the guys sleep on cots in jean's bedroom until they're like ooohhh noooo what a waste of space why don't we all just share one big bed oohhhhhh
over the next few weeks jean digs through the storage room at the precint and finds a small desk for the kid's room to promote maybe doing their homework for once. he lets them decorate the walls however they want, and everyone agrees that it's a sacred no-adults zone
cuno and cunoesse still have some mysterious beef between them, and in their misery of coming off the drugs, they're constantly fighting with each other (in a cryptic way that still provides 0 context for the adults to eavesdrop on)
harry is quiet lately, contemplative; he has to come to terms with things he's been avoiding his whole life. his body is a fucking wreck, and isn't used to sitting still for so long, and everything catches up with him all at once. he doesn't tell anyone for awhile but his memory is more fucked than he thought, and he finds time slipping away from him. he's sick in bed most of the time so he re-reads all the books he owns, and also randomly takes up knitting so his hands can stay busy and his mind can wander. everyone knows it's been a rough night if harry emerges from the shadows, crusty and stinking, and drops a dozen pairs of knit socks on the table
since kim knows the game from a cop's perspective, he gets his kicks doing stupid petty crimes, and also earns the household some cash on the side to keep them going. it helps him get through the intensity of his life and he lives out all his bad boy fantasies
the kids get better enough that they can go back to school, i imagine they transferred and are appreciating a) getting out of the house b) something to do c) cuno actually likes meeting new people and he's a novelty being the new student. cunoesse has a harder time adjusting and gets crazy jealous
with jean at work and the kids at school during the day, kim and harry FUCK
one day the angst sex is so good that harry stands up after, wipes himself off, and is like "yeah, okay, i'll go to rehab"
okay it's more of a support group personalized therapy package deal thing in the next city over, but harry really benefits from healing around other people who are going through something similar. his progress is immediate, he is a new person overnight. he is going forward, not trying to chase someone he once was. he lets himself slow down a little bit, lets himself be eccentric, lets himself age gracefully.
jean can't avoid telling pryce about the new situation ("you mean to tell me....three adult male colleagues? and two random teenagers they met during an investigation? do you know how bad that looks?" "i know, i know, but it's more of an at-home rehab-orphanage scenario") but pryce is actually strangely very kind about it (yes jean is more self assured now but also he dangles some blame in front of his eyes - pryce pushed harry too far and fucked over not just harry but jean and kim's personal lives).
pryce runs into harry soon after and almost doesn't recognize him. he's so clearly improving that pryce calls jean into his office first thing the next morning. if harry completes the whole rehab program and doesn't drastically relapse, he'll massage the budget so that jean can get a fat bonus, enough to cover the shittiest, cheapest house on the market, a way of saying thank you and i'm sorry to all three of them
cuno is smart, obviously, and snuck the last of his dad's drugs with him before he left. he finds it too difficult to get off speed and secretly indulges when kim leaves in the evening, but at least now cuno can do his homework and shower every night. he also shares with cunoesse and they learn how to trust each other again
kim has to do more parenting than he bargained for until harry gets well enough to take over. he'll be stern when boundaries need to be placed but otherwise he doesn't waste his time nagging or scolding, just the eyebrow is enough. he makes the kids help around the house while also learning how to do the basics: how to cook, how to clean, how to do laundry, how to change a tire, first aid, etc
c + c blossom with a safe home environment and some structure in their lives. at first they'd sleep for thirteen hours at a time, unfamiliar with the feeling of safety and utter relaxation. they shower too often and use up all the hot water, obsessed with this new luxury. they eat like wolves, used to the panic of not knowing where their next meal would come from.

Summary:
“Why are there so many animations?” Jon tapped his foot impatiently through the unnecessarily arduous process of getting to the next page. “I’m not a child. This is for Elias, not a primary school.”
“I thought they looked nice…” Martin said softly, shuffling his feet. “I can take them out, if you’d like-”
“They’re wonderful Martin, don’t listen to him."
Jon has to make a presentation for Elias. Sasha, Tim, and Martin help, with dubious results.
“It’s standard procedure, Jon. Every new department head does a presentation.”
“But I-” Jon left off with a sigh. Being called up to his boss’s office at the beginning of the day to be informed that he would be making a presentation to all of his intimidating colleagues (and superiors, if he were being honest) was not the way Jon wanted to start his Monday. Besides, what was he going to say? How could he explain this mess of an Archive that was currently under his command? That he didn’t really know what an Archivist did, and that when he googled the position it didn’t seem anything like what Elias had described? He might as well get in front of the room, announce his resignation and go home. Somedays this felt like the best course of action.
He’d heard the whispers following the email announcing his promotion to Head Archivist. “Him?” was said more than once. A few scoffs, a few appraising eyes from the other department heads who were all at least a decade older than him. Even Sasha and Tim had given him a sort of silent treatment, only speaking to him in short sentences and one-word answers in the weeks that immediately followed.
Elias seemed to sense his unease. “It doesn’t have to be long. Just a rundown, a simple assessment of the Archives as they are and what you plan on implementing during your tenure. Perhaps a little about you and your team. Introduce yourself. Everyone’s eager to learn a bit more about you.” Jon very much doubted that.
“Well the Archives, in my “assessment,” are currently a mess.” His candor was not appreciated. Elias was not amused.
“A mess that you’re going to fix,” Elias gave him a withering glance. “I assumed you could handle this, but if that’s not the case-”
“No, I-” He sighed again, the only sound he was capable of making. “Al-Alright. You said it was this Friday, correct?”
“Yes!” Elias gave him a brief smile and ushered him out of the door with a hand on his shoulder, signaling the conversation was over. “Let me know if you have any issues. Not that you will, of course.” Of course.
The door shut behind him and Rosie gave him a sympathetic look from her seat. “You hang in there, alright? You’ll do just fine.” Either Jon looked that pathetic, or Rosie truly did eavesdrop on every conversation.
Perhaps a bit of both.

It was Wednesday evening and Jon was staring at a blank screen.
Everyone else was packing up for the day while he sat in his chair, stewing over what words to write. He should be recording statements like Elias wanted, not putting together some bureaucratic nonsense so the others could ‘get to know him and his plans.’ He didn’t really have a plan for the Archives besides digitization, and even that was going disastrously. Should he even mention the tapes? He’d likely be met with scorn and laughter. Elias may find them promising, but anyone who took one look at their equipment said otherwise. Google told him that he should share fun facts about the team but that seemed highly unprofessional. Who cared that he liked to watch documentaries in what little spare time he had? Instead, he’d written a very bare-bones outline of what he’d like to say but for some reason typing it out was impossible. The only thing he’d managed to get was a layout and font in neutral, unobtrusive colors. This was very important to him.
“Still stuck on the presentation, Jon?”
Sasha was leaning against the doorway with a gentle smile on her face. She knew how hard it was for Jon to get his thoughts together sometimes and was always a sympathetic ear when it got particularly bad. She seemed to have finally settled into her role (whatever that may be) and was talking to him more and more. Though no one in the department had any experience in archiving, Sasha at least had more concrete ideas.
“Yes, I’m just-” he sighed, taking his glasses off and rubbing his temples to ward off the approaching headache. “I’ve got no idea what he wants. What is a ‘rundown’ and how can I have one with the Archives like...this?” He gestured to his mess of an office, currently drowning in paper and cardboard boxes.
“Well, what do you have so far?” Jon grimaced and handed over his notebook, filled with messy scribbles and half-finished ideas. Sasha skimmed it and made a few promising noises; Jon hated the part of himself that sought her approval. She finished and looked up with a grin. “How about you let me have a go at it? You know I love this sort of thing, and then you’ll have some time to record that statement tomorrow, hm?”
“I-really? Would that be okay? I don’t want you to have to- I mean, it’s my job.”
“I’m your assistant, Jon,” she interrupted with a placating hand. “So let me assist you!” Her offer seemed very genuine. Jon was loath to ask for help or admit to trouble even in the best of cases, but Sasha had a way of wearing him down with one well-placed smile. He decided to take the hand offered.
“Thank you, Sasha. Really.” He leaned back in his chair and gave her a grateful smile, glad for any progress made on the project.
“And it’s no problem. Really.” She tucked his notebook into her bag and gave a cheerful nod. “I’ll show you what we come up with!”

Jon yawned into his fist for the fourth time in an hour. The Amy Patel statement wouldn’t record on the computer so unfortunately he brought out the tape recorder. For some reason every time he recorded to tape he came away exhausted and anxious, unsettled by the words he spoke. Luckily he managed to get to the follow up recorded without too many interruptions- usually one of his assistants would come banging on the door and he’d be forced to start over for the sake of professionalism.
“Knock knock!”
Speak of the devil. Tim grinned at him from the doorway, Martin standing close behind him.
“Yes?” he asked shortly, straightening the files on his desk. “Do you need something?”
“Your presentation, as requested!” Tim bestowed upon him a flash drive with much pomp and circumstance. “You’re welcome.”
“Oh! Er, I thought I gave that to Sasha?” He looked in surprise at the device before him. He wasn’t expecting them to actually finish everything- he also wasn’t expecting anyone but Sasha to help him out. If Tim and Martin helped out as well... “I’ll uh, check it out in a few moments, thank you.
“But I want to show you now, boss!” Tim’s voice reached the whiny pitch that he knew Jon loathed. He sighed however, and plugged it in. After a few moments a window popped open, with a file labeled Jonny’s First Work Presentation. He rolled his eyes while Tim snickered. I’ll need to change that before the meeting…
The file looked...hellish, to say the least. Jon spied on the first few slides a strange and ugly gradient background that faded from bright green to black, along with garish rainbow WordArt. He was almost afraid to click on anything, lest it blind him or inspire a seizure.
“It’s really best viewed in slideshow mode,” Tim nudged Jon’s hand out of the way and made it so, the full screen now proudly showing the title page- Jonathan Sims’ New and Improved Archives!! Martin and Tim leaned in over his shoulder, the latter clearly excited to showcase his work. That’s never good.
“That’s far too many exclamation points, Tim.”
“There are never enough exclamation points, Jon.”
The next slide came in with a sort of shutter effect that did nothing to minimize the horrendous resizing done on the Magnus Institute logo, which had been stretched to fit almost the entire page and was unrecognizable due to pixilation. Jon gritted his teeth. “This is unnecessary.”
“Wow, everyone’s a critic,” Tim rolled his eyes.
“I-I can probably find a logo with better resolution,” Martin offered timidly. Jon had almost forgotten he was in the room.
The next pages were not much better- the Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of ‘archive,’ the audio pronunciation for it had a page to itself. There were several collages of books and artifacts (these looked handmade, as if someone had copy and pasted several finds from google images). Jon felt his anger grow with each laborious click. Was this someone’s idea of a joke? Where was Sasha? “Is there anything of actual substance in this?” he asked, huffing as the current slide disintegrated out of view in a dramatic fashion.
“God, so impatient! We’re building up to it.” A few more clicks. They got to a page covered with cartoon ghosts and nothing else. “Watch this!” With a click the ghosts all flew away, a clunky piece of animation that revealed Jonathan Sims’ Plan of ATTACK!!
“I did that one,” Martin announced in his ear with not a little pride.
The ‘plan of attack’ included bullet points (which were also little ghosts) regarding the new digitization and accessibility project in clear, cogent prose which must have been the work of Sasha. The rest, however- random paragraphs about ‘synergy’ and ‘dynamic team players’- was clearly unsalvageable and designed to make him the laughing stock of the institute.
“I can’t...this is unusable, Tim!”
“Keep reading! There’s good content there. God, there’s no accounting for taste these days, is there Martin?” Martin did not answer. What could Martin have said? Each page was worse than the last- the current slide had only a picture of what looked to be an ancient Egyptian scroll and nothing else.
“This is the definition of unusable.”
“No it’s not!” Tim argued though he was on the verge of laughter. He was smiling, clearly enjoying the entire scenario. “Look, I even put a ‘Meet the Team’ section-” He clicked through the slides, each piece of text gliding across the screen in an obnoxious star pattern.

“Tim Stoker: A Gentleman and a Scholar,” Jon read aloud. “I’m not saying that. And shouldn’t we be starting with me? I ask for one thing-”
“I saved the best for last, of course! Martin, you’ll love this,” Tim began frantically clicking through animations, taking a full minute to get to Jon’s slide. “Ta-da!”
Jonathan Sims: The Man, the Myth, the Legendary Archivist
It was a picture of Jon from a happy hour years ago, smiling broadly with half-lidded eyes and sprawled across the bar in a state of disarray. He had a vague memory of Sasha snapping the photo before he fell to the ground and vomited everything he drank. No no no no - he attempted to slam down the laptop screen before Martin could see but the damage was done. The man was red and stuttering, clearly embarrassed for Jon. He took a deep breath, attempting to calm down. He contemplated his options- double homicide or self-immolation. Both seemed equally appealing in the moment.
“Please leave,” he fumed, his own face a tomato red as he stared at the floor. “Now.”
“Aw boss, don’t be like that-”
“Now!” Two sets of footsteps scurried from the room as Jon threw his head into his hands.
He had quite a bit of work to do.

Of course he scrapped almost all of it, keeping only the informative parts that Sasha had written. This is why you should do things yourself. ‘Assist’ my ass.
Jon had kept the door closed for the rest of the afternoon, ignoring both the plaintive apologies from Tim and Martin and Sasha’s insistent knocking. He wanted to blame her for letting the other two get involved, wanted to yell and stamp and maybe throw a thing or two. But it was his job. He shouldn’t have left it all to them. Lazy, incompetent, his mind raged but the words were aimed at himself. Perhaps that’s why they sabotaged the slideshow, to tell him they weren’t going to do his dirty work. Hazing the new boss. Did they realize how important this was to him? Did they even care? He already looked like a fool- why not double down on it?
He took the ‘Meet the Team’ page down, his fingers angrily punched the ‘delete’ key for every picture and turned it into one slide with only their names and positions. That’s all they need to know, really. He managed to throw together a few slides on a new organizational system and something about research follow up, but it all rang false and hollow- any academic would see right through this bullshit attempt. Even the digitization slides seemed trite- why was this his first order of business? What the hell are you doing?
It was late into the night when he finally finished, though the presentation was nowhere near what he wanted it to be. The clock informed him it was only ten though, so he still had some time before the last train. He was just going to rest his eyes for a minute and then he’d get up and go. Just a minute...

And then it was tomorrow.
Fuck. Fuck!
Jon woke up with his head pillowed in his arms and his back almost completely immobile. He squinted at the clock- 7:00 AM. He tripped down the hallway and into the bathroom to freshen up, splashing cold water on his face and cursing under his breath. How embarrassing to be caught in yesterday’s clothes- if he switched out his sweater vest for a blazer, they might not notice. His wardrobe was nothing if not consistent and boring. His hair tamed into some semblance of neatness, Jon went on to his next stop, the break room for a cup of coffee and then finally, back to his office to survey the finished product and perhaps do a few run-throughs.
He settled in his seat and pressed the power button to coax his laptop out of sleep. The clock on the wall ticked a steady, droning rhythm that somewhat calmed his racing heart and he took a sip of coffee, savoring the bitter flavor. His eyes flickered down to the screen- still black. He pressed it again. Nothing. He looked to the side of the computer, noticing the lack of power cord. Oh, it’s not plugged in. That’ll do it. He solved that problem quickly and tried again.
Again, nothing. He pushed it harder, hurting his finger with the intensity behind it. The screen remained black.
It was then that Jonathan Sims screamed.

It was nine in the morning and he still had no idea what to do. No amount of coaxing, either through nice words or obscenities had managed to wake it up. He removed the battery and put it back in. He prayed to several gods, none of which he believed in. He kicked the desk and promptly fell to the ground, screaming in pain. IT didn’t come in until ten, and his meeting was at nine-thirty. He was well and truly fucked.
But then he heard footsteps coming down the hall and he dashed to meet them, hoping it was the person he needed. And it was.
“Sasha!” he panted, taking in heaving, gulping breaths. “Help!”
“Oh God Jon, is this one of your asthma attacks? Do you have your inhaler?” Her eyes widened and her hands fluttered nervously. ‘I’ve told you-”
“No,” he grabbed her by the shoulders, feeling more unhinged by the moment. “I-I lost it. The PowerPoint. My laptop won’t turn on, and-”
“Breathe, Jon! That’s no trouble at all. I can get into your drive, no worries!” she said, pushing him into a chair and booting up her laptop. Jon put a hand to his chest, attempting to follow her advice. See, it’s fine! “Where did you save it? On your ShareDrive or on the general Archives one? I’ll need your credentials if it’s the former.”
His heart dropped. No no no no. He’d done the one thing Sasha had always warned him against. “I-I saved it to the desktop…”
“Oh Jon.”
And that's when he spiraled. He was going to have to walk into that meeting, hands empty, and face the firing squad. Elias will know he should have never hired him and everyone there will nod and agree that the stupid boy who couldn’t do one simple task does not belong at the table with the rest of him and Jon will be sent on his way, back to research if he’s lucky or fired if he’s not and he can’t do one fucking thing right-
“Jon. Jon!” Sasha had a hand on his shoulder, firm and grounding. “Fucking breathe. It’s fine, you’re fine! Here.” She slipped the flash drive from yesterday into his hand and he groaned, attempting to pass it back
“I can’t use that one, you know I can’t-”
“No, this one’s different, I promise,” She grabbed his chin, forcing him to meet her eyes. “I tried to tell you yesterday- I’m sorry about all of that. It wasn’t funny. We fixed it.” She seemed honest, sincere. But Jon was still hesitant, taking in shaking breaths.
“This isn’t a joke?”
“I swear. Here, use my laptop.” She passed it over and Jon paused, considering his options, which were few.
So Jon took the flash drive and laptop and left, ignoring Martin’s greetings as he brushed by him on his way up to the conference room. Here goes.

“Erm, h-hello,” Jon coughed, clearing his throat. “I’m Jonathan Sims, the new Head Archivist, as Elias...already said, I guess.” He let out a nervous laugh which no one returned. Elias nodded, urging him to go on.
Jon had made his way to the room with fifteen minutes to spare, giving him some time to boot up the computer and load the presentation. A quick, nervous glance let him know that it was much changed- at least the first few slides. He shook hands with each department head as they came in, trying to see which of their smiles and congratulations were sincere. The answer? Very few. This was not comforting.
His hands shook as he clicked his way to the first slide, his heart pounded in his chest to reveal-
Bringing the Archives into the 21st Century- A Plan for Updating and Digitizing the Institute's Statements
Well that’s not bad at all.
He began to speak, his voice gaining clarity and confidence with every sentence. The presentation was lovely- incorporating his preferred neutral color scheme, a great improvement on the nauseating colors of before. The animations were minimal and sleek, making the transitions meld seamlessly from slide to slide. There was a bit introducing Gertrude’s past work and a dig at her filing system that earned him a laugh. There were new slides regarding the preservation of documents, a new organizational structure, the introduction of a database. All ideas they’d briefly spoken about before committing themselves fully to the digitization process as Elias instructed. Everything was written in his favored academic tone- so natural that Jon found himself speaking extemporaneously on the slides he felt more comfortable with. It was all met with approving nods and a studious gaze from Elias that Jon couldn’t parse. There was also no mention of the tapes.
The dreaded ‘Meet the Team’ section had been heavily reworked- each one of them had the headshot from their IDs (poor Martin had his eyes closed) and a mention of which department they’d transferred from, along with their credentials. It was professional and informative, everything Jon had wanted it to be. Sasha had outdone herself. Sasha should be the one making this presentation.
He tried to ignore the guilt settling in his chest, even as he smiled back at the approval from the academics he so desperately craved. He clicked to the last slide, which had their contact information and- oh. It was a picture taken from his birthday a few weeks back, where they all looked fairly presentable and were smiling, no idea of the task ahead of them. Elias was there too; Rosie had taken the picture at Tim’s insistence. His audience tittered, though it seemed to be in good humor rather than mocking.
“Ah, yes. Th-Thank you for your time.” He quickly turned it off and stared at the ground, his face warm with both embarrassment and a creeping sense of belonging that he didn’t know what to do with. He was startled when a small round of applause began and he looked up with wide eyes to find a smiling audience. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Elias nod and smile as well and he finally felt the sense of accomplishment he’d longed for since the start of his promotion.
The room cleared rather quickly (no one really wanted to be in a Friday meeting, after all) but Jon was stopped by a tall, smiling woman he had only seen in passing. “Sonya from Artefact Storage,” she reminded him, shaking his hand again and giving him a warm smile. “I’m looking forward to talking to you more about that database. I was always telling Gertrude she needed one, but of course she never listened to me. Stubborn to the end!” He could only stutter, too overwhelmed to formulate a proper response. A hand reached out to his shoulder.
“That was nicely done, Archivist.” For some reason the title made Jon feel odd, like he was having an honor bestowed that he had not yet earned. Elias wasn’t that much taller than him, but he always seemed to loom over Jon. “Quite the presentation. Lots of...ideas. But I must stress the importance of getting the statements-”
“On tape, yes, yes,” Jon said, quick to agree. “I just thought, er- I should let them know some of our other objectives, as well?” Seems like Sasha wanted to, at least.
“As long as you don’t forget yours,” A pointed glance. Jon gulped nervously, shoving a hand in his pocket. “Still, a good job all around. That Sasha of yours seems like a good asset. Enjoy your weekend.”
Jon froze in the doorway. Did he know? Of course not, don’t be silly. He shook his head and left the room. Well, at least that’s over with.

“Did it go alright?” Sasha asked immediately upon his entrance. He managed a self-deprecating smile.
“Surprisingly, yes. That was- thank you, I guess.”
“No trouble at all,” Tim jumped out from the break room, throwing an arm around his shoulder. “Always knew you had it in you. A consummate performer, I was telling our Martin-”
“Tim!” He scowled and tried in vain to shove him away, still irritated by his presence.
“Seriously, though. Sorry about all of that before. Just trying to lighten the mood, I swear we wouldn’t have actually left you with that-”
“It’s- It’s fine,” Jon sighed, reluctantly giving in to Tim’s insistent affection. “Well, not really, but it turned out alright in the end.” Sasha gave an encouraging grin.
“Did you like the photo?” Martin asked anxiously, hovering in the corner of the room. Jon paused. He considered telling him no, that he would have never put it in there himself and considered it rather unprofessional on the whole, but one look at Martin’s face told him that was the wrong move.
“Yes, Martin,” he said, summoning up the equivalent of a smile. “I liked the photo.”

METROPOLITAN SPECIAL EDITION: PRINCESS BELLE SPEAKS OUT ABOUT BREAK-UP WITH EMERY OF WINDASIA
The months since Princess Belle has broken up with Prince Emery of Windasia seem to have just flown by, but still there are ardent supporters who do not believe that Emery’s chosen wife, Princess Irene, is who he was meant to be with. In an effort organized personally organized by the Princess, she sat down with Metropolitan royal correspondent Winnie Farrell to clear the air, set the record straight, and why ending the relationship was “exactly what she needed.”
In the splashy five page spread, the Princess speaks out about how she still bought a piece of Irene’s after the Champs Les Sims fashion show because she had made a promise, and how she and Emery were on two separate paths from the start. “ I have grown so much because of it as a person -- I feel more sure of myself, more ready for my role as a working royal,” she says at one point in the article.
She also speaks about her new charity project: a charitable organization that she will be working with alongside her uncle, the Duke of Daven, called Mentally Fit, which is meant to help end certain stigmas around mental health in professional sports. As well, she also announced the launch of Fight Like A Girl, a new non-profit that she will serve as Chairman of the Board and patron of, which will help to keep young girls interested in sports as they get older and promote gender equality in athletics. “I love dressing up and getting my hair done as much as the next person,” she says, “but I also love getting my hands dirty and the thrill of competition that comes with playing sports. There are so many kids who don’t get those opportunities, especially young girls, because they’re expected to act a certain way and be into certain things, royal or not. Anyone can do anything, as far as I’m concerned, and I’m excited to hold our first event soon.”

Princess Belle floats into the studio to shoot on the early morning of October 14th. She is everything the papers make her out to be -- graceful, charming, but also incredibly kind and compassionate. She immediately treated the makeup and hair team like her best friends, but had brought a dress from home, requesting to wear it because it was the "right thing to do". When she pulled it out, I understood: this is a dress from the label of Ms. Irene Young, the former designer and current wife of Prince Emery of Windasia -- Princess Belle's ex-boyfriend of two years.
"I had promised her that I was going to buy a piece, and I never go back on my word. Despite the fact that she's married to my ex, I want to make it abundantly clear that she did not steal him from me. You can't steal love. Emery and I had always been on two different paths, it's just that ours happened to meet and go the same direction for a long time."
"Honestly, I'm grateful for the relationship ending," the Princess continued in our candid interview on a closed set. She had organized the photoshoot and interview personally, wanting to set the record straight by herself with her own words. "I have grown so much because of it as a person -- I feel more sure of myself, more ready for my role as a working royal. When your life is so public, it can feel like you're living in a bubble, especially when you're dating. I'm better for having burst my bubble."
When asked about why she thought the relationship ended, she paused, considering her words. "Emery leads with his heart," she said after a minute. "He cares so much about everyone, but that means he gets stuck in difficult choices easily. Ending things was not easy for either of us, but it was the right choice for me." -WF

Charlie is thirty-one and lives in London, England. He is a footballer-turned-businessman. Commitment issues have him unmarried. He has brought his almost two-year-old daughter Grace and his nanny Evie with him to the reunion.
In ten years, Charlie’s life has taken a dramatically different direction than he had originally thought it would.
Moving back to England after graduation, Charlie found a place in a League One team of the English Football League. It wasn’t the top competition he was dreaming of, but it was definitely a good stepping stone to get him where he wanted. After two years, he switched clubs as he was given an opportunity to move up into the Championship league and things seemed to be progressing well – until they weren’t.
Charlie’s dream of playing in the EPL well into his thirties was crushed in a mere few moments in the middle of a match. One aggressive tackle tore the ligaments in his right knee, and despite multiple operations and physical therapy, he never regained the competitive edge he had had before the injury.
Charlie did not take it well. He was forced to watch other younger players take his place as he was sidelined, and he was pissed. He had been sure he had so much left in him, but his career was ended before it had the chance to truly take off.
After much deliberation, he somewhat put his degree to use when he signed on as a coaching assistant. It wasn’t terribly satisfying, though, when he still longed to be out on the pitch himself.
His new direction came from the most unexpected person: his father. Since having returned to England, he made more of an effort to see his parents, and their relationship had improved over the years. Charlie had been expressing his discontent at dinner with his parents one night when his father suggested that he get into the behind the scenes business aspect of the industry. Charlie had scoffed – he had always been convinced he was not businessman material – and yet his father had connections, and when he set up a meeting for him with a rival club, Charlie was tempted with an offer he couldn’t refuse.
As it turned out, Charlie had a flair for bullshitting his way up the ranks, his charm and charisma going a long way. His father had his people give him a crash course in the corporate world, and before he knew it, he had faked his way up the ladder, his designer suits and charming smile, coupled with the Styles name, getting him further than he could’ve imagined. There were rumours he was up for a promotion next season, too. The most surprising thing of all was that he actually liked it. He had always been adamant that he didn’t want to be like his father, and yet he had become the kind of son it had always been assumed he would be.
Just as things were going so well, though, Charlie had his life turned upside down again. What he hadn’t known when he had taken a flight to Rome for a holiday was that he should never have gotten involved with the pretty flight attendant. His ensuing ‘relationship’ with Flight Attendant Crystal was purely physical – they hooked up whenever he was on one of her flights and whenever she had a stop in London. It was fun, he thought it wasn’t serious, until he fucked everything up for her.
Crystal was forced to take leave when she found out she was pregnant and she blamed Charlie for everything. They quickly realised that they didn’t really know each other. Charlie realised that, while he enjoyed the sex, it wasn’t worth it when he learnt she was kind of nuts. She constantly picked fights, easy when he was hardly an excited father-to-be, and they could never agree what the fuck they were going to do. Neither of them wanted to be in a relationship together, let alone raise a child.
After a gruelling nine months, Crystal gave birth to a daughter. Charlie was letting them stay with him, since he had some sense of duty, but after another screaming match between the two of them, where she reminded him that he had ruined her life and he declared he didn’t even want a baby in the first place, Crystal left. He woke up one morning and she was gone. He had found a note on the kitchen table reiterating that he could go fuck himself, and her sim card was snapped in half, floating in a glass of water, so he couldn’t call her again. He didn’t know her family, or whether she would return to her work. He didn’t know how to contact her. He was stuck with an unnamed newborn baby, and minus his favourite Rolex, which she had pettily stolen on her way out.
Way out of his depth, Charlie didn’t know the first thing about parenting. He reconnected with the nanny who had essentially raised him, and while she had retired long ago, she was more than willing to help him out until he could find someone permanent. Charlie might’ve been a dick, but he had enough heart to feel for the baby, his baby. He was not going to abandon her like Crystal had.
Charlie named her Grace. Ella had always been the one that got away, and while it wasn’t her he was settling down with, giving his daughter Ella’s middle name was a small comfort to him.
It took a few duds before Charlie finally found a nanny that it actually worked out with. Evie was the youngest of the women he had gone through – she was ten years younger than Charlie, and despite her not having as much experience as all the others, she was by far the best fit. Evie adored Grace, and the feeling appeared to be mutual. Charlie never had any problems with her, and in turn, he treated her well.
Coming from a modest beginning, Evie was thrown into Charlie’s life of luxury. He welcomed her into his flashy new apartment, gave her a credit card for anything she needed to get for Grace, and paid her generously, significantly more than she had been expecting to earn when she went for a job as a nanny.
Charlie enjoyed having her around. For lack of better judgment, he had slept with all of the previous nannies (which was perhaps partly why things hadn’t worked out), but it hadn’t happened right away with Evie. Of course, he was attracted to her: she was a gorgeous young brunette, who could’ve been spending her evenings doing something far more interesting than watching a rich man’s daughter while he was out for work commitments. And yet Evie was more interested in staying in with Grace. One night he had come home late from a meeting, he had asked her to stay a little longer for a drink, and he had ended up kissing her. He had (surprisingly) come to his senses mid-make out session that Evie was much younger than the girls he usually fooled around with these days, and that it could very well have been seen as him taking advantage of her, that maybe she thought she’d risk her job if she said no. But Evie had assured him it wasn’t like that at all.
Things are complicated between them. Primarily, Evie works for him, and aside from the discreet casual sex, she’s professional in every other aspect. Charlie always makes sure to give her days off, and sometimes gives her little (expensive) gifts as an extra thank you. He’ll find someone else to watch Grace when he wants to take Evie out somewhere. Evie’s family thinks it’s all a bit weird, but Evie only sees the good in him.
While Grace was certainly a curve ball, it was the reality check that Charlie hadn’t known he needed. He can still be an ass, but he’s settled more now that he has the responsibility of being a single father. He committed to being present more than his own father was when he was growing up; he tries to spend as much time as he can with Grace when he’s not working. Whenever anyone asks who her mother is, he explains it with a carefully worded, “She’s no longer with us,” and never corrects anyone who takes it to mean she’s passed on. Having not heard from Crystal in coming on two years, for all he knows, it’s true anyway. It’s better for everyone if they don’t mention her.
TL;DR: Charlie moved back to London after graduation, where he put in a few years as a footballer until a knee injury ended his career. He now works the business side of a Championship League EFL club. After accidentally getting a flight attendant he was fooling around with pregnant, she left him with their daughter and he is raising her on his own. He named her Grace and he’s more grounded now that he has her to look after. His young nanny, Evie, takes care of Grace while he’s working. He’s also sleeping with Evie. Charlie is, obviously, still rather stupid.

It’s an ongoing conflict - using Medicines that reduce my physical anxiety cortisol which comes through as wheezing escalation attacks and very bad sleep - sleeping correctly makes me feel calmer, breathe/think clearly Medicine examples - coffee, reishi mushroom, cannabinoids, magnesium, L theanine, Lemon balm, Sleep specific - L tryptophan, Zinc, valerian root, doxylamine (unisom) -----Escapism - learning how to use mindfulness and writing to transform my self avoiding into Self Actualization ------Counterdependence - Realizing that sharing/affection and giving affirmation would make me feel good, letting me treat ppl like I deserved their attention (as a provider) not gonna stand by saying nothing while they try to trash gaming and say we are giving kids screen / media addictions, when the only things I even really know I learned from gaming, mostly online blizzard and/or adventure gaming. I’m gonna teach what I learned. It’s battle shout. how we are failing worst as a so called civilized population: Educating the youngest. We are not doing it. We are not prioritizing growth and wellness for the children here. We are breaking their families, parents and guardians instead of supporting. Simulations Help Districts Build and Sustain an Effective Principal Pipeline
Supporting a ‘grow our own’ approach to leadership improves district culture and student achievement.

The Wallace Foundation, in association with the RAND Corporation, recently released its 7-year study called “Principal Pipelines: A Feasible, Affordable, and Effective Way to Improve Schools.” A key finding was that a focus on developing school leadership over the long-term benefits student achievement as well as retention of school leaders.
Using a leadership pipeline as a tool for improving, supporting, and building a strong “bench” of up-and-coming leaders can be a key strategy for building a positive district or school climate. That positive climate is sustained by ensuring that schools have the necessary quantity and quality of leaders who are steeped in the district’s culture and eager to shape and maintain the desired climate. This “grow our own” approach enables finding and recruiting appropriate candidates from within the district who have the education, skills, and experience required for the job. This approach also places the focus directly on development and communication among the sitting and aspiring leaders in a district, rather than enculturating new hires.
In general, the current educator development and certification process does not always prepare aspiring leaders for the power and influence of context in leadership. Although context can relate to tactical elements like the nature of the building, demographics, and the like, it’s really a subset of the district climate. In addition, aspiring leaders are not always prepared for the emotional consequences they experience, which challenge their ability to exercise good judgment and require them to be resilient.
Given these challenges, more and more districts are looking to grow their leaders from existing staff, which enables aspiring leaders to be more familiar with the context of the district. Getting the right people into leadership positions and supporting them with solid professional development is actually fairly straightforward, especially when districts use leadership simulations.
The Power of Simulations
In a simulation, participants take on a leadership role and exercise their judgment as they are presented with a particular school or district administrative situation. They are provided with contextual information regarding the problem they face through other characters in the sim and supplementary materials. Each decision the participants make leads to different consequences and feedback as their path branches to develop critical-thinking.
What makes computer-based sims unique is that they promote both skill development and team-building at the same time. By engaging educators in an exercise that requires collaborative decision-making and provokes organic peer-to-peer discussions in a realistic context, districts reinforce and expand the climate in a consistent and unforced way. When appropriately blended with instructional content focused on the necessary competencies and skills, sims provide a safe space for sitting and aspiring leaders to experience which it might take to be a leader in their schools. By sharing their different perspectives in a facilitated simulation setting, participants gain an appreciation for collaboration as well as a deeper understanding of decision-making in the context of the evolving district climate. The shared experience helps to provide depth and meaning to the importance of consistency in how decisions are made about a range of problems of practice.

Simulations make this communication process more robust by challenging both the sitting and aspiring leaders to think about the values from their own perspective, then talk them through with their peers in a safe place.
Having educators apply the selected content to the evolving climate has the further benefit of reducing the need for outside experts or enabling participants to practice the application of their content while experts are present to answer questions and provide feedback. These sessions might include working in small groups to complete a performance-based task, reviewing a case study and learning from others, or the use of online simulations.
Focusing on Adaptability
These simulations present a problem or a challenging situation—anything from the mundane like dress code violations to the complex such as cyberbullying incidents—and give the participants the opportunity to experience that challenge and reflect on what decisions they can make and the consequences of specific actions. Rather than emphasizing a right or wrong answer, simulations give our leaders the opportunity to focus on the thought process they follow by engaging them in conversation with their colleagues.
Just as selecting leaders with the right core beliefs is more important than the specifics of how they will put those beliefs into practice, this focus on the decision-making process rather than arriving at the “correct” decision is key for school leaders.
It’s a question of adaptability: today’s right answer might be the wrong answer two years from now. In many situations, the right or wrong decision will shift or change completely depending on the context or key details. Just as educators have moved away from expecting students to simply recite facts and figures in favor of teaching them to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills, so, too, should administrators focus on the process school leaders use to come to their decisions, rather than the decisions themselves.
Defining and Implementing Culture
For leaders to work toward common goals, however, they need the guidance of shared values—otherwise known as district culture. In education, just as in the private sector, culture encompasses the beliefs, values, and commitments an organization collectively holds. Seen from the outside, an organization’s culture is understood through its reputation. What is the organization known for? What are the words and characteristics people associate with your district?
Organizational cultures develop gradually, but over time, they become embedded. Organizations develop reputations and, once they’re established, they inform the way members of the organization think about it, their roles within it and, eventually, how they behave within it.
The literature about organizational culture tells us very clearly that organizations with a strong reputation for performance are those that pay attention to their culture. Perpetuating that culture includes making sure that throughout the onboarding, induction, training, and development of new employees there is a thread of sharing those cultural beliefs and values every step of the way.
The specifics of how they go about implementing those attitudes and beliefs is important, certainly, but there’s room for variety and experimentation there. Indeed, variety and experimentation are important pieces of innovation and improvement, but they must be in service of those broader ideals if they are going to fit within and maintain a district’s culture. By choosing the right candidates from the beginning and using adaptive tools like sims, schools get the best of both worlds.

From 3D in high school to race tracks in games
I was in high school when I began working with 3D software, and this new obsession eventually landed me a job at Ratbag. While there, I helped make tracks for the PC racing game Powerslide, and designed Dirt Track Racing. We made it part way toward an unreleased car combat game that looked a lot like GTA meets Mad Max, before I left to form my own company. I'd been inspired by reading Robert Kiyosaki's book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad.
Leaving game development to start a business
With a little background in photography, and experience using textures in 3D, I somewhat blindly jumped ship with the thought to make some random texture maps and sell them on Turbosquid. I drifted towards doing skies, because no one looked at me like I was a big weirdo, as they would when I was taking photos for dirt textures! Plus I could go to the same location every time and get a different end product!
To fund the business, I sold my Nissan Silvia sports car and promptly ran out of money a year later(!).
After scraping the bottom of my bank balance for another year after that, Hyperfocal Design began making decent money, and since that point has been a fairly solid, reliable source of passive income, meaning I don't have to actively work on the business to make money. That's only partially true, of course, since the longer I neglect the business, the less it gets promoted, the less updates go out, the more competition comes in, and the less money I make.
The time-line
...went something like:
5 years at Ratbag
2 years of scraping through to get Hyperfocal off the ground
A few more years doing well (during this time, Ratbag 'went under' - closed by the publisher, Midway)
A year trying my hand at professional poker (I really love the game, but boy is this a stressful career choice!)
A few more years at Hyperfocal
After getting a real creative itch again, went back to developing games with Saxon Druce from Ratbag
A few years of making Zombie games with Saxon before parting ways
1 year creating Unknown Orbit, solo (first Unity title)
1 year back to Hyperfocal
1 year making prototypes + vr prototypes
Now: Over a year working on Exo One
During this time, I very rarely ever worked on Hyperfocal every day, except for the latest 1-year stretch. Mostly I'd put in a few months here and there, which allowed me more time to do whatever else I liked - semi-professional poker, training for triathlons, traveling, surfing, bread making, and whatever else I was interested in at the time.
While I've been comfortable from Hyperfocal's income, it doesn't bring in the big dollars or allow me to hire employees or anything like that. But with a pretty low-key lifestyle I haven't had to worry too much about money, while simultaneously not being chained to a desk 8 hrs a day. I'm also confident that if I had a higher income target, I could have certainly made it happen (as I did recently in 2015 where I dedicated the whole year full time).
When Ratbag went under, I was particularly glad that I'd gone and formed a business where no single entity (a publisher in this case) could 'fire me' or cut off my entire income stream. For Hyperfocal to die off, I need to lose every one of 100's of customers a year, which isn't likely.
Back to games
So since I began making games again with Saxon 8 years ago, I've been mostly making indie games while Hyperfocal pays the bills. If Hyperfocal ever started declining too much, I was perfectly free to take some time to prop it up. I wasn't forced either way to do one or the other, and I was never at risk of sudden and complete income loss.
I've also been fortunate that the zombie games we worked on together contributed a little to some additional passive income, which has certainly been a nice additional safety net.
Setting up your own content creation/passive income streams
If you're a game developer, or someone with skills in 2D/3D art, coding, sound, music, etc, there are good opportunities to create niche 'content', plugins, assets, etc that may help supplement your income, or fund your lifestyle entirely. Especially since so many game developers use Unity these days.
If this sounds interesting to you, I'd ask myself:
Where do my skills lie
What do developers need (in my case, choosing skies was a nice choice, since so many games take place outdoors!)
What niches are under served or don't suffer as much from multiple, similar assets.
What could I teach? (unless you're a complete beginner, there's people out there who know less than you!)
I'd personally (as an artist type!) look at assets that tick one of these boxes:
Don't require constant updating as new Unity versions come out (or even assets that are completely untied from any software)
Can be sold for a higher price. Lower prices typically = you dealing with more support issues.
Has a creative aspect that can't be easily copied (so making yet more 3D, real-world gun models would probably be a poor choice! )
Since working on Exo One, here's just a few things I've noticed, which may or may not be of interest:
Substances and procedurally generated textures are now pretty amazing, and there's not enough of them
Despite already having music in the game, I get a deluge of emails from musicians wanting to help (good luck, musicians!)
But zero emails from voice actors, despite, as above, already having voice/story/narration in the game
"Sim-lish" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1_NVYPMmhE (voices that sound like a language, but are just gibberish, to go with text), is popular in games, but there's zero libraries out there as far as I can see
Real time volumetric skies are starting to look rather awesome!
Having decent support and response time from plugin developers is incredibly important, especially when so many people like myself are solo or small teams that rely on that support to put a game out.
Ensuring plugins work with other plugins is pretty huge
Platforms like Patreon and Kickstarter can help you get things started
To end with, I'll just say I'd encourage you to think about whether you have some skill that you can use to create products to help create your own passive income streams. As real-time graphics have gotten increasingly realistic, often a product or 'content' can also be sold to people in film/vfx and architectural visualization as well.
Depending on your skills, products could include art assets, sound/music libraries, plugins, a course where you teach something, etc.
Market your stuff!!
Perhaps the biggest challenge these days with almost anything, is that everyone is doing it - you will absolutely need to do some marketing and promotion! I also encourage you to put your face and name behind your business, to give it a personal angle.
Throughout Hyperfocal Design's life, I've rarely put much if anything into promotion for my products, outside of sending an email to my newsletter. "Back in the day", I got by with newsletters + Google search, but you can no longer guarantee a good Google placing. In 2015 when I finally decided to stop being a wuss-bag and actually market Hyperfocal's latest product, I had my best year ever! It is hard, and your ego is on the line, but power through!
