TikTok ban “not excluded” in EU, Ursula von der Leyen says

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hinted that banning TikTok in the European Union is an option, during a debate held in Maastricht, POLITICO reports.

“It is not excluded,” von der Leyen said after the presenter referred to the US, where TikTok is under a national ban unless it is sold by its owner, ByteDance. The chairwoman also added that the European Commission was among the first to ban its employees from installing TikTok on their work phones. She said:

“We know exactly the danger of TikTok.”

Von der Leyen was speaking in Maastricht not as Commission President but as the leading candidate of the centre-right European People’s Party, but the remark came amid a string of bad news for TikTok in Europe.

Last week, TikTok decided to suspend a feature that rewarded users for interacting with the TikTok Lite app after the Commission launched a review of the feature under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) content moderation law.

TikTok is under separate investigation – also under the DSA – for alleged failure to protect minors. Under the DSA, the Commission can in any case order a temporary suspension of the service as a last resort.

I’m a proud believer/user of YouTube Shorts because I don’t have to download anything new, I’m not as paranoid scrolling since the algorithm is garbage, and the user interface is actually navigable. Being able to scroll through a creator’s Most Popular shorts should be a necessity for all of these apps.

Reblog cause I’m genuinely curious. Some of these apps have millions of downloads but I’ve never heard of them before. And users on here complain about TikTok all the time (rightfully so) so pitch your alternate in the tags.

US passed bill to ban TikTok

The fate of TikTok, which is used by about 170 million Americans, has become a major issue in Washington, where lawmakers have complained that their offices are flooded with calls from TikTok users opposing the legislation.

Following India’s anti-China strategy, the US has joined the league in banning Chinese apps. Announcing the ban on TikTok, the Senate unanimously passed the “Protecting Americans from Apps Controlled by Foreign Adversaries Act”. 352 lawmakers supported the bill to ban TikTok, while in the US House of Representatives, only 65 members voted against the ban.

This is certainly a major setback for the video sharing app, as more than 170 million American users use TikTok.

Reacting to the US government’s serious decision, TikTok’s Vice President of Public Policy Michael Beckerman said:

“This latest legislation being rushed through at unprecedented speed without even the benefit of a public hearing, poses serious Constitutional concerns.”
