Moon Knight: The Complete Collection by Lemire & Smallwood
As creative, empathetic and thoughtful a study of DID as you're likely going to find anywhere in literature.
This run is a perfect, all-encompassing take on Moon Knight. It delivers the character in a way that subverts general expectations of Marvel superheroes. And while I loved the actual crime-fighting scenes in Warren Ellis' run, what we get here feels truer not only to Mark Spector, but also Jake Lockley, Steven Grant and Moon Knight, in that it wholly understands them beyond their functions as a Marvel superhero. Lemire's writing is a gargantuan achievement in exploring dissociative identity disorder and Smallwood's artwork pairs with the writing beautifully, doing wonders in visualizing it in a manner that never feels offensive or imbalanced.
This character is going to fit perfectly within Phase Four of the MCU. I can't wait for March 30!
9.5/10

Thomas Whitfield
Tumblr media
Thomas Anthony Whitfield (April 30, 1954 – June 20, 1992) was an American gospel singer, songwriter, arranger, pianist, choir director and producer best known for helping to shape the fabric of contemporary gospel music with his elaborate choral arrangements and the merging of musical styles ranging from jazz to classical into traditional gospel foundations. This style earned him the respectable title of "Maestro" by many of his colleagues and supporters. He was best known for organizing one of the popular contemporary gospel choirs of all time, the Thomas Whitfield Company, and for producing best-selling records for Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Shirley Caesar, Yolanda Adams, Douglas Miller, Keith Pringle, Paul Morton and for Aretha Franklin.
Biography
Early years and career
Thomas Whitfield, the eldest of five boys, was born in Detroit, Michigan to Thomas and Jacqueline Whitfield. He took to music at a very early age and was inspired by his great-grandmother to take piano lessons at the age of five and would advance to playing the organ by the age of ten. His influences remained some of Detroit's greatest musicians including renowned organist Herbert Pickard and Timothy Beard. After graduating from Detroit's Central High School, he attended the Detroit Conservatory of Music and ended up sharing his expertise and knowledge as a music instructor at Finney High School. While teaching, Whitfield continued to gain recognition in the area for his unique style of musicianship and would eventually work with the Beverly Glenn Chorale, the Craig Brothers and Rev. James Cleveland.
In 1977, Whitfield, along with his good friend Tyrone Hemphill, felt led in establishing The Thomas Whitfield Company (The Whitfield Company for short); a local music ministry featuring some of Detroit's finest singers and musicians. This remarkable institution remained the apparent incubator for most of Whitfield's most popular creations and would forever be attached to his musical legacy and recording career. Amazingly, it didn't take long for Whitfield to get the attention and overdue recognition he deserved. Sound of Gospel, a local Detroit gospel music subsidiary of Westbound Records operated by music guru Armen Boladian, took notice in Whitfield's fresh sound and approach to gospel music and signed him and the group thereafter; resulting in the debut release of "Brand New" in 1978. Detroit's sophisticated brand of traditional gospel crafted by artists such as Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, Donald Vails, Rev. Charles Nicks and Rev. James Cleveland remained the prominent and popular style from the area and was usually the formula the majority of the country expected from the region. Whitfield, on the other hand, merged traditional gospel with stylish piano performances, riveting rhythmic sections, melodic choral harmonies and musical arrangements. This style is heard on "Repeat The Sounding Joy", a funk-disco melding which ended up being one of his early hits, and other works including "The Lord Is Blessing Me", "I'm His Today" and "That's How The Lord Works".
The big break: Hallelujah Anyhow
After getting local attention with the releases of "Brand New" and "Things That We Believe, Vol. I" and "Things That We Believe, Vol. II" during the years of 1978–1980, Whitfield recorded his first live recording session (a popular trend in modern gospel music) with the Company at the St. Paul Church of God In Christ in Detroit. The album was finally released in 1983. At the same time, Whitfield began his association with Onyx International Records (a black gospel subsidiary of Benson Records) and also released "Hold Me"; a solo project that seemed to be threatening towards SOG's current contract with the Whitfield Company. While "Hold Me" was released on a more recognized label and was by far one of Whitfield's state-of-the-art productions to date, it also help increased the popularity and exposure of "Hallelujah Anyhow" and kept the album on Billboard's Gospel Music charts for over a year.
The understanding of the agreement with both music labels was that Whitfield recorded "Hold Me" as a solo entry while SOG was mainly interested in Whitfield being attached to the choir; feeling that his choir was the "selling card". SOG continued to record them as: Min. Thomas Whitfield & the Thomas Whitfield Company. Whitfield wrote most of the songs (except for "Soon As I Get Home" and "There's Not A Friend" – written by Roscoe Corner) and produced both projects. Songs like "God Wants Our Praises", "There's Not A Friend", "Walk In The Light", the infectious arrangement of "Oh, How I Love Jesus" and the brilliant ballad "Hallelujah Anyhow" were standouts.
Whitfield began a line of notable achievements in producing for both established and fresh talent. In 1984, Whitfield produced the historic debut project Peace Be Still, for a virtual unknown singer at the time by the name of Vanessa Bell Armstrong; earning him his first of three GRAMMY nominations. That year, he also wrote "Time To Come Back Home" for Shirley Caesar's GRAMMY and Dove Award winning "Sailin" album. Whitfield's popularity and demand continued to escalate – possibly pointing that he may have reached the beginning of his recording zenith. Production on projects from the Soul Children of New Orleans, Keith Pringle, Douglas Miller, the Winans, the Michael Fletcher Chorale and Paul S. Morton followed. In 1986, "I'm Encouraged" was released; a live recording session held at the Civic Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. The project climbed to the #1 spot on Billboard's Top Gospel Album charts.
During Whitfield's final years with Sound of Gospel, Whitfield discovered Texas native Yolanda Adams and produced her first project Just As I Am for the Detroit label in 1988 which skyrocketed up Billboard's Gospel charts.
An opportunity of a lifetime was awarded to Whitfield when the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin confronted him with the task to head the musical direction for her upcoming live recording – a project that the media labeled the sequel to her best-selling and award-winning "Amazing Grace" LP. In 1989, Aretha Franklin took home a GRAMMY Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Female for "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism" and a Dove Award for Traditional Gospel Album of the Year – an album that featured musical and choral arrangements from Thomas A. Whitfield. Some of the album's serious highlights include the moving opener of "Walk In The Light" and Aretha Franklin being serenaded by Whitfield's entrancing piano accompaniment on "Ave Maria".
Later years
In 1989, Teresa Hairston (head of Benson Music Group's black gospel department) contacted Whitfield and expressed interest in signing him, along with the Whitfield Company to her label. SOG released two successful projects ("The Annual Christmas Services", "...And They Sang A Hymn") in 1990, while Whitfield went into the studio to record "My Faith" for Benson. The project contained the Edwin Hawkins' composition "Glorify The Lord" and featured musical appearances from Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Karen Clark-Sheard (from the renowned Clark Sisters). In 1992, Benson released what would be Whitfield's last recording, "Alive And Satisfied". The album, to so many gospel music historians, felt like a prophecy and a "love letter" to Whitfield's presence in the gospel music industry. The album featured the moving praise-and-worship ballad "Precious Jesus", "Let Everything Praise Him" (which features the popular sampled vamp used in a number of recent gospel selections) and the reflective "We Remember (Medley)". The medley featured some of Whitfield's most treasured classics strung together in one song. By this time, Whitfield had already been contacted by Paramount Pictures to appear in the motion picture Leap of Faith, starring Steve Martin. He eventually turned down the offer; feeling that even though the visibility was good yet he felt it might diminish the dignity of his ministry. He also began work with music mogul Quincy Jones' "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration" – a powerful display of modern musical arrangements mostly handled by Mervyn Warren.
Death
On June 20, 1992, after a lengthy choir rehearsal, Whitfield went with four of the choir members to Elias Brother's Big Boy; a popular local restaurant on Telegraph Road. At the table, he started to clutch his chest and began to gasp for air. After being administered CPR by his dinner companions and arriving at Garden City Hospital, Whitfield died on June 21, 1992 from a heart attack.
Legacy
Whitfield's musical brilliance and influence has left a tremendous impact on today's leading contemporary gospel artists. Musicians such as protégé' Rudolph Stanfield, Donald Lawrence, Fred Hammond, John P. Kee, Byron Cage, Ricky Dillard, J.J. Hairston & Youthful Praise, Walter Hawkins, Richard Smallwood, Big Jim Wright, Edward Dawson and many others. He is still highly regarded for his numerous innovations during the eighties and early nineties and being one of the pioneers to master the usage of the MIDI-sequencing and synthesizers in gospel music; all helping to earn him his own style: the "Whitfield" sound.
In 1993, Benson Records released a tribute album dedicated to the memory and musical excellence of Thomas Whitfield. It featured new arrangements from Whitfield hits and featured a list of musical guests and musicians including Donald Lawrence, the Clark Sisters, Fred Hammond, Kevin Bond, Larry & David Whitfield and the Whitfield Company.
Thomas Whitfield was honored posthumously with the 1999 James Cleveland Award at the 14th Annual Stellar Music Awards held in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Thomas Whitfield Company has continued to perform and record since their founder passed and are ensuring to keep Whitfield's legacy alive. They have recorded "Still", a Top Ten gospel album, and featured new and rare selections from Whitfield, along with music from former Whitfield musician Rudolph Stanfield. The song, "Don't Give Up On Jesus", sung by Daryl Coley and Vanessa Bell Armstrong also appeared on the best-selling WOW Gospel 1999 compilation.
Larry and David Whitfield, brothers of the "Maestro", decided to organize the Whitfield Group (not to be confused with the Whitfield Company) in January 1994. Since their inception, the music troupe has recorded one project and have opened for artists including Yolanda Adams, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Men of Standard and Kim Burrell.
There have been a number of artists that have sung Whitfield's praises and have re-recorded his music. Some of the most memorable tributes include:
Shirley Murdock "We Need A Word From The Lord" ("Home")
Vickie Winans "We Need A Word From The Lord" ("Bringing It All Together")
Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar Mass Choir "Precious Jesus" ("Dallas")
Bishop Paul S. Morton "Down At The Cross" and "Nothing But The Blood"("Still Standing")
Tarralyn Ramsey "Saved" ("Tarralyn Ramsey")
Donald Lawrence/Tri-City Singers "The Little Drummer Boy" ("Hello Christmas")
Byron Cage "Still Say Yes" ("Prince Of Praise")
Byron Cage "In Case You've Forgotten" ("An Invitation To Worship")
The Clark Sisters "You Can't Take My Faith Away" ("A Tribute To The Maestro")
Earnest Pugh "Wrapped Up, Tied Up, Tangled Up" ("A Worshipper's Perspective")
Donald Vails featuring Yvette Flunder and Shirley Miller "Just Knowing Jesus" ("My Soul Love Jesus")
Rodney Posey "Dear Jesus" ("Live In Praise & Worship with the Whitfield Company")
Mark S. Hubbard & the Voices "Lift Those Hands And Bless Him" (featuring Ted & Sheri) ("Blessin' Waitin' On Me)
Dr. Ed Montgomery/ALC "With My Whole Heart" (Total Live Experience")
Benson Records released a rare VHS "Alive And Satisfied" video of Thomas Whitfield and the Whitfield Company. The video also features an award presentation to Whitfield for his record going gold and also an emotional tribute from Fred Hammond. BMG Heritage Records has also re-released a double-CD of Aretha Franklin's "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism" (1987) in 2003. The album featured four new bonus cuts including a previously unreleased version of Walter Hawkins' classic "Be Grateful".

❝  Ready or not, here I come, you can't hide Gonna find you .. ❞
PAST:
Back in 1856, the town of Riverdale Creek was profoundly known for its safe haven, where the supernatural from all areas of the world choose to reside in order to find peace and tranquility. From this time, supernaturals of all kinds lived in harmony, and it was easily mistaken for any normal human town. It held weekly resident meetings, the town council taking it within its stride to ensure the happiness between different supernatural beings. In fact, it was the definition of calm and tranquil, and it was as if these beings had a liking for one another. This remained this way up until 1900, where one family known as the Halson’s found their tension had risen, as the daughter of this family had found love with a son from the Smallwoods. This did not sit comfortably with either family, and therefore a fight broke out. Many died, and many fled in fear of their lives. The town remained uninhabited up until 2001, where supernatural folk, and the non supernatural begun to reside again within the town.
PRESENT DAY:
Things remain uncomfortable to all those in town. Supernatural of all kinds reside there, but they keep to themselves, separated off into different parts of town. This is done to keep the peace, as the mayor Timothy Winchester deems it to be for the best. Anyone caught going against these rules will be slaughtered on the spot. However, something is brewing, tensions are running high, and it is only a matter of time before things return to how they were in 1900.  But this time? Much more is at stake.
RIVERDALECREEKHQ is a OC supernatural appless RP, accepting a range of different species allowing plot development for all original characters. With weekly plot drops, events and tasks, and relaxed activity checks, it allows all RPers to join in with the fun.

Chapter 33 of ‘Domestic Bliss Must Suit You’ is up!
Hey, I finally got this chapter up lol! Sorry for the delay, this sickness has been kicking my ass all week. I hope you enjoyed this chapter!
Sherlock's parents come visit their grandchildren in the first half. Molly deals with insecurity in the second half.
"Oh, they're precious," Wanda Holmes gasped. "We have grandchildren, Timothy, aren't they beautiful?" Tears filled her eyes.
"They sure are," Mr. Holmes replied. "Hello there, we're your grandma and grandpa." He wiggled his fingers at them. The twins were in their lounger that resided in the sitting room. It was a lovely gift from Mycroft and Lady Smallwood. It had been a week since they were born. Sherlock and Molly had invited the Holmes to visit sooner but they insisted to wait after the first week to allow things to settle.
"You two are going to make wonderful parents," Mrs. Holmes told them.
"We certainly hope so," Sherlock responded, his arm wrapped around Molly's shoulders as they sat on the sofa. Just then, Charlotte began to cry.
"Oh, come here," Molly cooed as she picked her up into her arms. "Mummy's here. She needs to be fed, I'll be back." Molly sauntered off to the bedroom. Victor was lifted up into Mrs. Holmes's arms with Mr. Holmes smiling over her shoulder.
"Sherlock, we are so proud of you," Mr. Holmes stated. "You started a lovely family with Molly and you seem so much happier than you've ever been."
"John was right; it does complete me as a human being," Sherlock smirked at the memory. Years ago, Sherlock would have scoffed at the scene before him but now, he couldn't imagine living without Molly or the twins. Speaking of Molly, Sherlock stood up from the sofa. "Excuse me a moment." He kissed the top of his son's head before heading into the bedroom.
Molly was still feeding Charlotte when Sherlock popped in.
"Hey you," she greeted him. Sherlock sat himself next to her on their bed. He rubbed soft circles on the small of her back and kissed her temple. "What's all this about?"
"Well, things have been a bit…hectic lately and I want to make sure you're alright," Sherlock told her.
"Oh, I'm fine," Molly told him.
"It's okay if you're not. I know how you are, Molly. You try to put up the happy pretense because you're always one to be there for everyone else at a moment's notice regardless of what you feel. It's okay to…to need me," Sherlock spoke rapidly.
"Sherlock, where's this coming from?" Molly asked.
"Well, I've read up on postpartum depression and I was worried you may be struggling in silence and you know I'm here for you, right?" Sherlock continued. "For you, for our children, always." Molly's heart melted. Charlotte finished feeding and Molly just settled her into her arms more comfortably.
"My sweet husband," Molly smiled, "I know you are. I promise you, I'm truly happy; exhausted, but happy." She let out a half-hearted laugh.
"Would you tell me if you were going through it? Say, if it hit you next week? Because I read that it sometimes comes around as late as two to three weeks after birthing and—" Sherlock was stopped by Molly's index finger placed against his lips.
"I promise I will tell you if I'm going through it," Molly told him. "Thank you." She gave him a quick, soft kiss on his lips. "I love you."
"Mm, I love you too, Molly," Sherlock returned, his tone gentle and loving. "So much."
They walked back out into the sitting room to find Sherlock's parents fawning over Victor who was now settled in Mr. Holmes's arms. Molly held Charlotte out to Mrs. Holmes, offering to let her hold her granddaughter now that she'd been fed.
"Tell me, what are the two of you going to do when they need separate rooms?" Wanda asked. Molly opened her mouth but closed it again, realizing they never discussed such an important topic. But, once again, Sherlock took her by surprise.
"I've actually figured that out but I haven't talked with Molly about it yet," Sherlock explained. Molly raised her eyebrows, waiting for him to elaborate. He took note of her expression, running a hand through his hair.
"I'm listening," Molly encouraged him.
"Well, you see, I thought maybe Baker Street would just be used for casework and we'd find a bigger flat here in the city or a house in the country, say in Surrey," Sherlock rambled. "Perhaps a cottage or—" He trailed off, having not completely prepared himself for this conversation. For once, he couldn't figure out what was going through her mind.
"Sounds perfect," Molly finally spoke up with a smile.
"Um, which part?" Sherlock asked.
"A cottage in Surrey sounds lovely," Molly told him, hardly believing she was actually having this conversation with Sherlock Holmes.
Another two months pass and everything has settled into a routine. On nights that Sherlock doesn't sleep, he takes care of the 3am feedings, using the bottles of Molly's breast milk stored in the fridge. He had convinced her to let him do this as he pointed out the fact that she needs the rest more than he does.
"You've done all the work, after all," Sherlock had told her. "You carried them to full term and had many restless nights. We're a team, Molly, and I will take on as much as I possibly can to share all responsibilities with you." That was when she decided to start leaving bottles of her milk in the fridge for the nights he fed them.
So there he was at three forty five in the morning, occupying his chair in the sitting room, feeding Victor who was propped in his arms. Molly stepped out of their bedroom, wearing his aubergine dress shirt. He remembered how happy she was earlier that day to find she could fit into it again. She wasn't back to her pre-baby body yet, nor was she really too worried about it, but Sherlock loved the adorable plumpness she maintained.
"Hey," Molly said quietly, sitting herself in the chair opposite her husband's.
"Couldn't sleep?" Sherlock questioned.
"Not really," Molly replied, brushing her fingers through her hair.
"Have I told you lately how beautiful you are?" Sherlock asked her with a smile and a wink. Molly's heart leapt. She was beyond believing such shallow things, but deep down inside, she was afraid that Sherlock would no longer find her attractive. Molly knew it sounded stupid but it wasn't unheard of in marriages. Everything shifted and changed once children were in the picture. But this is Sherlock, she told herself. He loves you more than life itself.
"Possibly, but I don't mind hearing it again," Molly blushed.
"You've been worrying," Sherlock said matter-of-factly. Of course, he's noticed that, Molly thought. "Why?"
"I don't know why," Molly admitted sheepishly. "I guess because it's not exactly rare for the attraction to wear off after the fact." Sherlock stood after Victor was done being fed, as their son had fallen back asleep.
"Stay right there while I put him back to bed," Sherlock told her. He disappeared to the nursery. Molly waited just as he requested, a bit nervous. She didn't notice him come back into the sitting room until his lips were suddenly everywhere; on her forehead, eyelids, nose, cheeks, lips. He ventured to her jaw, ear, neck and perfectly plump belly, kissing her softly. Sherlock lifted her into his arms and carried her into their bedroom where he made sure to gently show her just how much he truly loved her.

Your Friday Morning Roundup
In case you haven’t heard, there is a new Crossing Broad. Better content, no ads. Win-win for you, the faithful CB reader. Urge you all to subscribe to get the best in-depth coverage, great coverage of Philly sports in your inbox, and other great perks!
The roundup:
While you were probably sleeping, the MLB hot stove was SCORCHING last night as ace Justin Verlander is no longer a Detroit Tiger.
Official: Justin Verlander is with the Astros
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) September 1, 2017
While the Phillies actually won a game last night, everyone’s favorite crazy uncle Odubel Herrera began a rehab assignment with the Reading Fightin Phils and brought the bat flip with him.
Guess what #Phillies fans? http://pic.twitter.com/sYEDJFZrvN
— Jeff Israel (@JPhils90) August 31, 2017
Sticking with the Phillies, the lone bright spot is still Rhys Hoskins, who keeps writing his name into the record books.
As the media landscape continues to drastically change, especially here in Philly, FS1 is ready to launch a new morning show with former Eagle Cris Carter. Here is first promo for it. Your thoughts?
In case you missed it on FOX, here's the 1st commercial for First Things First w/ @criscarter80 @getnickwright & @JennaWolfe, Sept 5 on @FS1 http://pic.twitter.com/EeziHqtkan
— First Things First (@FTFonFS1) August 27, 2017
I’m sure you weren’t watching the Eagles final preseason game last night, but Chris Jastrzembski did (unfortunately for him) and you should reward him by reading his observations from the contest.
Even Tony Corrente wasn’t paying attention to the game last night…
The person in charge of Ezekiel Elliot’s investigation by the NFL recommended he not get suspended. He got suspended six games. Wait, what?
This morning, Zeke is suing the league to overturn his suspension:
Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has filed a pre-emptive lawsuit challenging the appeal process arising from the six-game suspension imposed upon him by Commissioner Roger Goodell.
The petition, a copy of which PFT has obtained, seeks a ruling from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas vacating the eventual ruling in the case, which would block the suspension to be imposed by the NFL, presuming that arbitrator Harold Henderson affirms all or part of the pending six-game banishment.
This will get fun.
A former ESPN football analyst reveals he left the network because he could no longer be a cheerleader for a dangerous sport.
On the hardwood, former Sixer Spencer Hawes is on the open market. Somewhere, John Smallwood calls for his triumphant return.
Milwaukee plans to waive Spencer Hawes, league sources tell ESPN. Bucks using stretch provision on his $6M salary to get under luxury tax.
— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) September 1, 2017
ESPN used their Megacast for Thursday night’s Ohio State-Indiana game and new hire Les Miles really needed to use the bathroom and tried to find it on live TV.
Damn:
yooooooooooo http://pic.twitter.com/yIY6OkIx6P
— Timothy Burke (@bubbaprog) September 1, 2017
Off the sports grid, support from all over has been pouring in for the Hurricane Harvey victims. Philly’s own Kevin Hart has raised over $1 million while J.J. Watt has gotten over $12 million. Every little bit helps.
Sidney Jones will reportedly start running next week. A lot of work left to do – especially for a cornerback – returning from a torn Achilles.
And I’ll leave you on this one…Six Flags announced a new ride yesterday, that well, I think no one will be able to stomach. Take a look, would you strap in?
Enjoy the weekend, and be sure to subscribe to the all-new Crossing Broad because everyone is checking it out, even Howie Roseman.

{libation: chapter two/3} jezebel & timothy
“Jezebel…can I ask you…I mean, she’s all right, isn’t she?”
Utterly shocked to hear the man talk for he had been sitting silent for near an hour (actually he had never spoken so much in her presence before), Jezebel drops her needle. It splashes into the bowl, bouncing off the hard clay edge which clatters to the floor as she tries to snatch it, soaking her sandals and skirt.
“Bloo—”
Leaping to her feet, her hand flutters uselessly after the bowl and needle. Tiny grin planted on his lips, Timothy catches her wrist.
“Easy girl.” His voice is gruff, but comforting. “Easily mended.”
Quietly abashed, she rests back on bent knees and nods. Timothy let her go, his big hand waving over shattered clay until the earthenware was a whole piece once more. No cracks were visible as he handed her it; you would never know how many times nor how oft it broke. Her nose wrinkled. The medicine could not be returned to it; the heart of the bowl’s use and purpose. She would have to remix the herbs and refill the bowl.  It occurred to her she was like the clay; her purpose molded, shattered, and molded again in the kiln fires. Still, Jezebel was grateful, merciful and fearful, so she smiled at Timothy and thanked him for the thorn in her heart just the same.
His shrug careless and smile kind, he said nothing else as she stood and went to the mortar and pestle. Eyes trained on the little pounding mallet as if he expected her to pound him with it, he shifted his arm with discomfort.
Tap-tap-tap. The constant pounding was calming as her heart endeavored to match it’s rhythm. Steadily working, Jezebel tried to ignore the angry red lines imprinted on her palms. They were from this morning. Tim had appeared on the edge of their vegetable patch, when she was bent in the dirt with the labor of tending crops. Rattled as easily then as she had been a second ago, at least that time she had yanked out the pesky weeds. They’d left the marks on her skin, criss-crossing the heart lines, but she had not set herself back then.
His easy grin then had made her laugh; he had come because Jasper had ordered him to go. He wanted a cut looked at; tired, Jezebel had assumed, of the man’s silent suffering. Or of him getting blood on their stuff, Timothy had joked. She wondered why she had laughed. The wound was deep in his skin, a madder scarlet than the brand she knew he too wore. What the cut had come from, Jezebel was careful not to ask. From the angle, an instinct told her it was an odd wound that was likelier to have been self-inflicted…but she forced her mind to stop there. That was chasing a thread that fanned the fear in her chest, a sickness in her belly — as easily as Timothy informing her Jasper had sent him to “the best” fanned the flush in her cheeks.
Turning the stone to dump into the bowl, she went to the basin still filled with water from their well and spooned it in. Only when she approached Timothy again did she hear what it was he’d asked. Quietly turning the question over in her mind, wondering if she dared, she decided that considering he had asked - it would be worse not to attempt and answer.
“Is who all right?”
Extending his arm once more as she reached for it with a loaded linen, his eyes clouded with emotion. Momentarily worried she should have left the man to his thoughts, he seemed to guess this and held up his free hand. Waving off her concern, he grunted out a single name,
“Marya.”
Tone and gaze tender, he kept his softened eyes on her steady dabbing. She thought for a moment she had never heard been so choked by a single word. Emotion in her own gaze, her thumb swiped under her eye as if mad at her skin. As if the tear was a flek on her porcelain skin. Marya lived with her son of a late husband in the village, aware of the war, aware of the magic. Jezebel knew that wasn’t why he asked. Breath hot and stuck in her chest, she couldn’t think what to say. He guessed the truth of it as her mouth gaped.
“Healthy.” Settling on the word, Jezebel didn’t look up. That was not a lie. Marya was not physically ill. Only sick of heart, as they all were, and for all her slight frame and lack of magic she was as fierce a fighter as any of them. She was a mother.
Head jerking as he accepted it - and of course he accepted it, for he wanted something in this goddamn life to be good - his voice was gruff,
“And little Peter?”
“Making as much trouble as ever.” That was easier to answer; the joke evident as she finished cleaning his arm off and reached again for the needle. The silver tip directed her magic without breaking the skin; cutting him further would do no good. His laugh was heart-warming in her ear.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” Jezebel winked at him. “He knocked over a sack of grain in Bertha’s store the other day. Made up for it though - he sang in the service last sunday. Megan Harte wants to steal him for every Sunday now — says he has the voice of an angel.”
She said this just to make Timothy proud. Even if Peter was not his biological child, she could see in his eyes, that smug-soft look her father got when he praised her. Jezebel focused on that, rather than the swimming tears.
“He’s a good lad.” He spoke, then gasped, a rush of heat that he presumed was her magic flooding up his arm. Narrowing his eyes as he felt the muscles relax, he thought the warmth was more from relief after a moment. When there was nothing else to burn, you have to set yourself on fire. The words stuck in his heart. Amazed with how cold flames could be, he was grateful for her warmth. He didn’t remember how he’d gotten the wound she now closed, only knew that he woke with it. Timothy only wished to say waking up with no memory of the previous evening was uncommon.
It was affecting all of them differently, he thought with no small amount of anger though it was controlled in comparison to Harry’s outbursts. Joel was scared of his own shadow and skittish of rabbits half the time — the other half ravenous. For what, Tim didn’t know. The baker’s son would eat twice as much as him, then complain nothing was enough with tears on his cheeks. And Jasper…
No, he shouldn’t think about any of this; he would only black out again. Jezebel was a good girl - a good friend, he didn’t want to frighten her. He did that enough just by speaking. Filling his thoughts with memories of Marya’s smile, he knew his bottom lip was trembling by the time he spoke once more,
“Too good, really. Too good for me. Both of ‘em. Can you—tell her that? Tell her to forget me?”
“I will not.” Pulling on the linen she was using to bandage, her jaw set in sudden anger. Jezebel bit down on her lip hard. How could he think that? The emotion flashed across hardened eyes as she met his gaze and shook her head.
“Timothy Smallwood, what would she say if you told her that?”
He said nothing.
“Marya misses you - she knows you. She knows you better than this. Should I tell her — are you sorry you were with her?”
Though Timothy said nothing still, Jezebel could see the answer easily in his stubborn gaze of eyes like obsidian. Just like Jasper’s, she thought. In her mind’s eye, Timothy’s image melted to Jasper’s, became Timothy’s again - hazy with the angry tears in her eyes.
“She isn’t sorry she met you - she isn’t sorry. Don’t throw that away. Do not. “
Saddened by the heat in her gaze and voice, he exhaled heavily, heart sinking in his chest. How terrible it was for all of them, to be made kin by mutual ire.
“Jezebel — after what I did — “
“No, don’t.” She snapped it, tying off her work. Her heart had skipped a beat; she did not want to be reminded of his crimes. “You were targeted for something you could not help; do not reward their despicable actions by hating yourself as they do.”
Laying a hand over his hand, she curled his fingers in a comforting squeeze. Tenderness returned to her as suddenly as the flash of anger, and she spoke with utter certainty — thinking she knew exactly how the woman felt,
“Marya would not blame you for anything but telling her how to feel.”
