"Here With Me" ||
Arthur Morgan x GN!Reader

Ok, I gotcha….what about the first time someone tells Arthur they love him? Could be reader, m or f, or an existing character?
Oh I like this idea a lot and think it’s such a bittersweet feeling for Arthur, I won’t get into the meat of it, but you know how he feels about people calling him ‘a good man’, or just how Mary ended up treating him before she left. This man deserves the world, okay?
*
It had been an age since he heard those words, never had he thought he would actually ever hear them uttered to him, nor did he think he'd ever find the courage to mutter them aloud again to any living soul. He found himself undeserving of any kind words, living the life he had, he knew there'd be a mark upon his soul, and anyone foolish enough to accept him as he was, well they were just that: foolish.
But there you were, admiring him from afar for so long that it almost felt like a fever dream when you two met. He'd brushed anything off at first, just thinking that whatever the weird spark he felt was just in his head, he always ignored those gut feelings because he felt that they didn't deserve to be had. But slowly, those large thick walls were chiseled away one by one over time.
When you had decided to tell him how you finally felt, he wasn't sure what to do, he sat there unblinking, staring directly at you. What was he thinking? Why was he just… sitting there? You knew he wasn't one to delve into his feelings so openly, but your admitted confession had meant a lot to you, so your leg bounced up and down due to your nerves. You knew Arthur well enough that if you rushed him or made him feel like he needed to supply an answer right away, it wouldn't work out so well for either of you, but that didn’t stop you from assuming the worst.
As you sat there and allowed Arthur to think your confession through, you sat back and thought of all the ways he'd changed your life and the way you saw things, but most importantly, he always looked out for you, even when he felt that he shouldn't have gotten you involved in his life to begin with. Boldly, you reached across the wooden table that sat in the camp, the smell of fire and booze hung heavily around you, the lingering gang members that were awake were too drunk or tired to pay you two any mind. Your hand was placed on his, you didn't need to exchange words, you felt that he understood how you felt and why, well, you hoped he understood.
Arthur was good at thinking of others, though he wouldn't care to admit it, always thinking of what was best for you, but never what was best for himself or you both. He was a stubborn man, but it was one of the many reasons you did love him.
His silence wasn't odd, you preferred that he sat back to think things through rather than immediate dismissal, it meant that he was considering your words more than anyone could realize. But you loved to hear him speak, that gruff voice that you could never get enough of, and he graced you with the sound of it.
“You uh, you sure you'd wanna love a man like me? You know what that means, don'tcha?” He asked you, his eyes stared at you beneath the brim of his hat. The light from the fire illuminated half of his face and he looked so beautiful, like a painting that was created with love and carefulness with each stroke.
You just nod in response to his question as you sit across from him, a small smile across your face. “I do, yeah,” you say with a small breath of laughter. “I wouldn't say it carelessly, Arthur. Loving you with all of the ups and downs it comes with is something I'm willing to live with.”
Arthur listened to you once again, his jaw slightly clenched as he held back what he truly wanted to say, which would only be dismissing himself, and you smiled at his ability to bite his tongue.
You couldn't help but chuckle at how his face contorted with so many emotions at once, and he just looked up at you with a hard stare, but it softened as soon as he locked eyes with you.
“No matter what I say, you ain't gonna listen to reason, are you?” He asked you, his tone more gentle this time.
You shook your head. “Nope. I've made up my mind. As grim as it seems, this world doesn't promise us anything, so why not take what time you have and enjoy it? You deserve it, Arthur.” Your grasp on his hand tightened, showing him you weren't going anywhere, he was stuck with you.
The gunslinger swallowed, how mouth suddenly dried as he nodded to your words. “It's… been a while since I heard ‘em, figured I never would again. But… it's nice to hear ‘em, ‘specially comin’ from you.” Arthur offered a smile as he continued to look at you beneath his hat, not wanting to give away just how happy you'd made him. Not yet.
“I love you, that's all you need to know,” you assured the man, “you don't have to do things alone, you never had to, okay? Let me share your burdens with you, and if you don't wanna say it back yet, that's okay. I ain't going anywhere.”
Arthur just nodded again, the smile widened, stretching his lips. “‘Course you ain't, wouldn't let you if you tried,” he said with a chuckle that followed.
For now, those were the only words you needed to hear from him, you knew that with time and patience, that man who was so closed off to the world would allow you a glimpse of his heart.

Whenever Rusty was gone for weeks at a time, that part didn't bother you in the slightest, it paid the bills and was a necessary trade-off for affording all he could provide for you. You didn’t even think he would give up what he loved doing, and you’d never want him to, but what you hated the most was the loneliness.
You'd grown accustomed to having him around, so when that first time back on the job came around, you were slightly nervous, but living in his larger home was nice and much more peaceful than staying in your city apartment. It gave you things to do with a place so large, new things to discover about Rusty that he had displayed around the walls, but for such a larger place compared to your apartment, it was painfully quiet after a while of living there. Rusty wanted you to feel at home here since you decided to stay with him, so he tried his best to do what he could to bring more of you out within the confines of the walls. He offered to set up a room just for you if you wanted it, sort of like an office or a crafting area, and he'd arrange it to suit your needs. You spent time in there when he was away, fiddling around with whatever you had set up, and you just mostly liked to sit in there and read, but today you were feeling impatient, so you placed the book down and let out an irritable sigh.
You weren't upset with him, far from it, you were upset with yourself for being so codependent on this man. He brought out a side to you that you didn't know existed, and you were starting to feel that feeling in the pit of your stomach whenever you began to think of Rusty. It would lead from missing him and wondering what he was thinking, to wondering if he'd ever let you fuck him in his truck. You sure hoped he would at some point, you needed to ride him while he was in that seat of his–
“Oh god,” you grumbled and stood up from the chair, then you decided it was best to go and take a shower. Wash away your sinful thoughts, that's what you needed to do. You pulled yourself away from the room and weaved your way around to the shared room you had, then rummaged through the closet, your mind desperately trying to bury the thoughts you were having.
The trickling of water felt great as soon as it hit your body, your muscles relaxed under the warmth of it, so you cranked it up just a little more to get the temperature just a bit higher. A smile grew across your face as the water soaked your hair, ran down your back, and you stood there to allow yourself just a few moments to gather your thoughts. But as soon as you closed your eyes, his face was there. You could imagine him walking into the bathroom as soon as he heard the water start running, opening the door, and just leaning against the frame, because he’d know you heard him, so you’d peek out.
“What’re you up to, sugar?”
You’d scoff and look up at him as you peeked through the shower curtain meekly. “Taking a shower, why?”
“Just wonderin’ why you didn’t invite me in.”
Rusty was like that sometimes; he would want to be wherever you were, wanting to touch you in every place he possibly could reach. You weren’t opposed to it, you encouraged it even, but something about his gentle touch when he was in one of those moods always made you feel empty without him here. Your fingertips ghosted over your lips and slid down to your neck -his favorite spot to kiss you- as you stood beneath the running water still, smiling to yourself.
The impure thoughts that took over your mind were willing you to slide those fingers lower and lower, smiling as your eyes remained closed until you gently dipped them between your legs. Your vivid memory of the way his large, calloused hands handled you so well flooded back, and the way he curled those two fingers into that sweet spot made you buckle at the knees. Yours weren’t as good as his, but they’d get the job done. You let out a small moan, your breath hitched as you pictured Rusty pinning you against the cold tiles of the shower.
“Easy there, girl, you’re so eager. Gonna take my time with you.”
Just thinking about his deep voice as smooth as pouring a glass of whiskey, it tickled your brain in the right ways when he spoke you through everything he did. Most times he'd tease you, edging you to the point you were a shaking, sobbing mess. Other times, he would talk you through it and watch you as your face contorted from feeling pure bliss to feeling complete frustration.
“Please, Rusty, I wanna cum so bad,” you'd whine.
“Oh you will if I let'cha,” he'd respond smoothly, knowing you couldn't do much to change his mind.
Your head leaned back as the water sprayed down your chest, you couldn't help but grab your breast and squeeze it, playing gently with your hardened nipple. God, you needed him so badly, and you wondered when he'd be back home, back in your bed. You wanted to feel his mouth between your legs, feeling the way his facial hair rubbed against the inside of your thighs sent you into a frenzy every time, and he knew what to do to get you to cum on command.
You wished he was here to pick you up and place you in the bed, but you had to make due until he came back. With a sigh, you removed your fingers from yourself and washed them off, then stepped out of the shower with a towel wrapped around you. The sting of sadness set in a little as you shuffled to the large bed in the center of the master bedroom, seeing how painfully empty his side was. He was already gone for a couple of weeks, and it had been a while since you last called to check on him, so maybe you would do that to ease your loneliness. But you felt so pent up and needed to feel a release in one way or another, so maybe you'd call afterward.
As you crawled into the middle of your bed, you laid on your back and sprawled out, one leg lifted as you placed your fingers between your already slick folds, thinking of the large, rough man of your dreams. He would know how to take care of you, it's like he was easily attuned to your needs and what you preferred, and his fingers fit so well into your hole. You moaned out softly, your body moved as you rolled against your hand, wanting to feel his thick digits stretching you so well. The room was filled with your moans and wet sounds from between your legs, and you pulled those mental images to mind that made you want to descend into your orgasm, already so eager to feel the sweet relief so you could finally relax.
What you hadn't been paying attention to was the front door opening and closing.
Rusty had tried to call you twice, but your phone was still sitting in your office space beside the book you were reading, so you had no indication that Rusty was going to surprise you by coming back a little earlier than expected. He heard your moan from downstairs, his ears perked up and tuned into his surroundings. At first, he was a little worried by your lack of reaching out, but it seemed he'd caught you at the perfect time. He was missing you while he was away, and he already felt the growing excitement in his jeans. Slowly but surely, he made his way up the stairs, making sure he didn't tip you off just yet, and the sounds coming from you only sounded more enticing the closer he’d gotten.
He had finally got to the doorway and he peeked inside, watching as you lay there spread out on your shared bed, touching yourself as your eyes were squeezed shut. You were pumping your fingers in and out, curling into that sweet spot as you moaned out Rusty's name over and over, wishing he was there to take care of you. It was hard for him to keep watching and do nothing, he had to have you, he couldn't wait for much longer.
His large hand slowly pushed the door open as you continued, no sound came from the hinges which would have given away his position. Instead, he stood in the doorway, leaning against the doorframe with one arm keeping him in place while the other slid into his front pocket. Damn, you looked good like this, he was always a watcher, but never to this degree.
“Well, damn, if I woulda known you were havin’ fun without me, I woulda came home sooner,” he said suddenly, his voice still low and deep.
Your eyes snapped open as you removed your fingers from yourself, the sudden shock of the fear of being caught electrified your nerves. But after the initial shock, you stared up at him and smiled with a hint of embarrassment.
“R-Rusty! You're home!” You wanted to run to him to greet him, but your soaked hand kept you from doing so. “You're back early.”
He stepped up toward the bed, his head cocked to the side as his hands managed to find his belt as he began to undo it. “Well, I wanted to surprise you, but it seems you surprised me first. What'chu doin’?”
Your face was most definitely red as you closed your legs, poorly hiding the fact that You were just touching yourself. “Uh, I was just… I was thinking of you all day, I was missing you… and I got caught up…” You confessed with a blush in your cheeks.
“Missin’ me that much means a lot to little ol’ me, sugar.” He stepped up to the edge of the bed and without missing a beat, he grabbed your legs and pulled you toward him, which caused you to yelp out a little in surprise, but you were now face to face with him. He smiled down at you beneath the brim of his aging trucker hat, his eyes bore deep into yours. “Havin’ all the fun without me, ain't you?”
“I wasn't having that much fun, I was wishing you were here with me,” you explained, staring up at the large man. “But… you're here now, and well, I haven't finished…”
“Oh, so you want me to help you with that, huh?” He asked with a smirk, his large hands still resting on your ankles. “And so what if I do help you?” He asked playfully. “What do I get out of this if you finish?”
You knew he wanted you just as bad as you needed him, and he wanted you to work for it now that he caught you in the act.
“Couldn't keep those pretty little fingers away, just had to get impatient, huh?” He chuckled as he lowered his body onto you, massive in size compared to you.
You bit your lip as you reached up for his neck, wanting to play with the hair that peeked out from beneath the hat. He stopped just above you, hovering enough that if you were to lean up, he would be just out of reach. “Rusty, kiss me, please?”
He just chuckled in response, that smile you fell for immediately peeking from beneath the hat. “Oh I don't think so, you gotta earn that, sweetheart.”
You were about to whine in protest, just wanting to dote on the man now that he was back, but you barely had time to recover when he lowered his mouth to your inner thigh, kissing it and biting at your sensitive flesh that was oh-so close to your heat. The gasp that escaped was loud and sharp, but you soon turned into a whining mess the more he teased you.
“Rustyyyyy~” You whined as you tugged at his hair, causing the hat to shift and fall off to the side of the bed. “I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do it.”
“You mean you didn't mean to get caught, is that it?”
Your face was flushed at the realization that he was right, you meant to pleasure yourself but wanted to get it out of the way so you could hold off a while longer for him to get home.
“Been so greedy ever since you were fucked,” he huffed and lowered his mouth back onto your thigh. “Give you a taste and now you're fuckin’ cock hungry.”
His lips kissed your slick folds over and over, just missing the mark of paying attention to your throbbing clit, and you swallowed a pathetic whimper that died in your throat as soon as he plunged two of his fingers into you. You hissed at the feeling of those calloused digits, curling into you and causing your walls to flutter around him. Your back arched as you rolled your hips into his hand, feeling that sweet friction that hit you in just the right way, you wanted to cry with how much you've missed him.
“Oh my god, Rusty, please, keep going…” you sighed, your lead lolled off to the side as you removed the towel from your top half, and then you began to massage your breast as he kissed and touched you.
“You better not cum till I tell you to,” he warned in that deep honeyed voice. “Else you ain't gettin’ what you want.”
“I-I don't know if I can hold back–”
“Then you better learn real quick, sweetheart, you ain't gonna like the punishment you get if you don't.”
You loved when he urged you, spoke to you like he did, the gravelly voice he got with you was so sexy that you could have fun just listening to him talk. You shifted and couldn't help but continue to fuck yourself on his hand, whimpering as you were stretched so good with just his fingers. Rusty then slid his tongue around, coating it in your wetness as he continued to finger you, gently playing with your clit. He sucked at it, watching as you went from a whiney mess to a blubbering mess. You twitched and your body jolted, feeling that intense pleasure on your clit, getting the friction you so desperately craved.
“Oh, fuck, Rusty! Please!” you begged, your knees shaking as he held one of your legs up behind your knee.
You urged him to continue, so he obliged and removed his fingers, to which you cried at the loss of feeling him inside of you. But now those had been replaced with that broad tongue, lapping away at your essence, wanting to taste the sweetheart he so desired in his absence. You could feel his facial hair scratch and tickle at your thighs, the overwhelming feeling of his stubble, his tongue, and his large hand gripping at your leg so hard was a lot to handle while your orgasm was building.
“Oh fuck, fuck, fuck–” You were at a loss for words with how well you were being treated, you'd loved how he got you so sinfully wet.
Rusty smiled as he brought his lips up to your aching nub and began to swirl his tongue around it before he began to suck at it. You cried out and thrust your hips upward, pushing yourself further against his mouth as if you could get him any closer to you, all while your hands were clutching at the comforter beneath you.
You were so close to feeling a sweet release until his mouth harshly pulled away from you, leaving you feeling empty and aching. “Rusty, no! W-Why would you do that?”
“Told you you couldn't cum without my say so, and as much as I wanna taste you, I want you to cum while I'm inside you,” he explained, followed by a dark chuckle.
It didn't take him long to crawl back toward you, one hand guiding himself to push against your folds, his head pushing against your clit. You squirmed and rocked against him, trying to feel him slide against your lips, just wanting anything more than the emptiness you felt right now.
Your eyes closed, your brow furrowed, and you moaned every time he pushed against you just enough to feel just a little relief only to pull away again, and it was driving you insane. Your eyes fluttered open and you stared up at him with a look of pure frustration.
“Rusty, pleaseeeee,” you begged him again, but you regretted doing so as soon as he pulled away from you. “Wait, what are–”
He pushed himself up, then with a quick turn and an arm slung around your waist, you flew up against him, landing against his chest as he quickly positioned himself so you were straddling his lap as he sunk into the mattress.
“Told you, sweetheart, you're gonna work for it.”
Your lips suddenly felt dry as you could feel his hard cock twitch beneath you. He was giving you the chance to ride him, how could you refuse him this? Your hands hold onto his shoulders to gain some leverage as you move yourself a little higher, allowing yourself to line up perfectly with him. Slowly you sunk onto him, the girth of his cock stretched you so well, it made you let out such a low sigh as your entire body shivered with the feeling of how much you needed this.
“Oh my god, Rusty,” you groan out, your hands still placed on his shoulders. “Fuck, missed you so much while you were gone.”
“Yeah?” He asked with a wicked smirk, his hands gripped your waist as he pushed himself deeper inside of you until he bottomed out, and then those calloused fingers slid down to your thighs.
Your hands immediately reached up and snaked through his hair, grabbing and pulling at it as his hands held you by your ass, allowing you to bounce on his cock at your own speed, but he could easily change that in an instant if he decided to. You leaned forward, wanting to kiss him, but he leaned back a little and smiled, chuckling at the disapproval plastered across your face.
“Told you sugar, you gotta earn that. Need you to cum on me first, now start movin’,” he huffed as he leaned back against the pillow, watching you with interest as you began to bounce on him.
He helped a little, lifting you every so often to get you to fall harder into his lap, your skin slapping in a beautiful rhythm as you cried out his name over and over again, but your voice hitched when he slipped his hand between the both of you to rub his thumb against your clit. Your fingers clasped the back of his head and neck, your nails grazing his skin while he continued to gauge your reaction.
“Oh fuck, Rusty-” you gasp.
His thumb rubbed in increasingly tighter albeit sloppy circles, and that only caused the pleasant tingle between your legs to grow with a deeper intensity. Rusty then pressed the pad of his thumb harshly against your throbbing nub while he thrusted his hips upward at the same time, watching you as you were coming undone as he watched you intensely.
“Yeah, you’re doin’ a good job there, wonder if I should let you cum now…” He chuckled as he saw your eyes roll back once he jerked his hips upward, hitting that spot in such a delicious manner.
“Please, oh my god, PLEASE-”
“Please what, sweetheart?”
You shivered and bit your lip, wanting to stifle your moan so you could form a singular sentence. “Please, I wanna cum so bad. Please, let me cum…”
Rusty’s grip tightened as his smile widened. “Atta girl, love hearin’ you beg for it.” His hand pulled away from your possibly bruised hip as he reached up, his massive palm now wrapped around your throat as he pounded into you harder, faster, all while still stimulating your clit.
You cried out, your whines and moans drowned out by the blasphemous sounds that came from your slick-soaked pussy. He relished in the sounds you made, you knew he wanted you to be as vocal as you possibly could, even in public when he would make sure you knew who you belonged to. His hands released your throat and moved away from your clit, then slid around to rest on your ass, gripping your cheeks hard as he began to fuck himself into you. He’d give you the release you so desperately craved, and the release he needed to lose himself in being away from you for all that time.
“Rusty, I won’t be able to hold it...” you warned through gritted teeth, your hands resting firmly on his chest as you clawed your nails against his skin.
“Guess I could let you cum on me, then,” Rusty offered through his heaving breath, still smiling up at you.
Several more hard thrusts against your aching cunt and you were going to be ruined in his lap, you cried out while he continued to plow into you, making you take every inch you could of him as your body tensed and finally released that pleasure. You couldn’t even take the time to ride out your orgasm, Rusty was relentless and continued to take you at his unyielding pace, wanting to be able to cum deep inside of you. His thighs tensed with each roll of his hips, his body straining beneath you as your walls clenched around him.
Rusty wrapped his arms around your waist and buried himself to the hilt inside of you, coming hard as spurts of his hot seed coated your insides, his deep honeyed voice released a guttural growl as he gripped you hard. It throbbed as he held you in place, but you were too tired to move much anyway, so you allowed him to use you as he deemed fit as you lay limp in his arms.
You were both straining to catch your breath as you both lay there, your body now collapsed on top of him while his arms released the firm grip on your waist and just draped over you gently. Your head was resting on his shoulder as you attempted to catch your breath, and Rusty just lay there with his hand stroking your hair softly, rewarding you for your good behavior with the softness only you really got to see. He wouldn’t force you off after, he enjoyed the affection you showered him with during moments like these, so he allowed you to remain splayed on top of him.
“That was amazing…” You sighed happily, your eyes closed as you listened to his heart beating. You couldn’t find the heart to pull away from him, even if he’d been gone for a while, you just wanted to enjoy it with him, no matter how brief.
His arms wrapped around you as if to give you a hug that he hadn’t thought of giving you till that very moment, so you moved your head lazily to look up at him, your chin resting against his chest. “You still haven’t given me that kiss yet,” you huffed and pushed out your bottom lip.
Rusty just let out a low chuckle as he always did, but he pushed himself up and slid his hand around your neck, tangling in the sweat-soaked hairs as he pulled you into a heated kiss. When you pulled away, you smiled up at him and felt content with everything in the world now.
“Missed you, too, sugar. Next time you’re feelin’ lonely like that, I suggest you call me up.”
“And how will that help me exactly?”
Rusty just laughed again and slid his hand down to your ass, giving it a firm slap. “Oh, I’ll think of a way.”

Rusty had put his jacket on the couch momentarily while he went to fetch his phone from upstairs. He came back down and went to grab his jacket only to find it had gone. Rusty chuckled to himself as he walked towards the kitchen where you were making a cup of tea.
"Baby could I have my jacket back please I gotta go."
"But I'm freezing and this is really warm plus it smells like you."
"I could just stay here but then we wouldn't have anything to eat"
"Can't I just come with you. Pleasee?" Giving your best puppy dog eyes.
Rusty rolls his eyes pretending to be annoyed "well come on then, hurry up and put some shoes on."
You quickly but carefully poured your tea into a travel mug to drink on the drink into town. Putting your shoes on while Rusty went upstairs to get another jacket.
Bo Sinclair
Tumblr media
Bo had come back home from working in the gas station to have some lunch. He was in the middle of making a sandwich when he felt arms wrap around his waist from behind.
"Hey baby" he says as he turns around in your grasp to kiss your forehead. "You had any food yet?"
"No, I was planning on taking some and Jonesy to that lake in the forest."
"M'kay, just be careful"
"I will" you place a quick kiss on his lips before making your own sandwich. You also pick up a packet of crisps and a can of pop.
"I'mma get back to work, ya gonna be ok?"
"I'll be fine honey" giving him a sweet kiss before taking his hat off his head and it on yours.
"Oi ya little minx, that's mah hat"
"I gotta go byeee" you wave as you walk out the door.
Michael Myers
Tumblr media
Michael was looking around for the new hoodie you brought him last week. He had checked the bedroom, the entire wardrobe and the drawers had been emptied, their contents lying all over the floor. He had checked the washing basket. Picked it up and emptied it on the bathroom floor. His hoodie wasn't there either. Michael walked into the living room to ask if you knew where it was, only to find you curled up on the couch wearing the exact hoodie he was trying to find. Michael let out a sharp of air out of his nose before deciding to lie down on the couch and pull you on top of him.

PenPals(Veneer x OC)Chapter 4
Previous chapter
Author’s Note: This is a more Avery-centered chapter, so I hope you enjoy getting to know this character more! Thank you again to my best friend @tinalbion for beta reading for me! Here’s more fanart of Velvet, Veneer, and yes, even Avery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How would one describe their work without sounding insane? Avery didn’t know, even though she’d been working at that stupid rink close to five years. She was on her thirty minute lunch in the staff lounge, her skates off and under the table at her feet. In front of her, she had a slice of pizza and a soda, with a pen and notepad. She found herself taking notes of things she wanted to tell Veneer throughout the day and used those notes to write to him in the evening. She wanted to make sure that her letters were full of content, whether it be photos or just daily updates. Never once did she want a letter to lack any content, especially since Samson put a lot of effort into writing her back. Sometimes she would get pages of letters and sketches.
For about a month now, they had been sending letters back and forth. Avery felt herself grow closer with the male, yet too shy to ask if she could visit in person. If anyone asked her a few years ago where she imagined herself, she would have not answered with: Oh yeah, I’m sending letters back and forth with someone who was close to going to prison!
It just made her feel less lonely, after losing her one and only friend. Her best friend too. She knew that she had to get back out there eventually, to learn to trust others again and make friends, but it was hard when someone screwed you over as hard as Rebel Rivers did to her. She still felt hurt that one moment they were roommates, and the next second she was quite literally drained of all her money and kicked to the curb. Would it be weird to ask a coworker to go out and do something? What could they even do: go to another nasty joint or go bowling at another cheesy diner?
Absent-mindedly, she allowed her foot to fidget with her skates, rolling them back and forth, though she made sure not to let them roll too far away. She didn’t know what else to write to Samson without sounding as though she was one who constantly complained about their situation. But truly, at her work, she felt lonely, and at home, she felt isolated.
From the other side of the staff lounge, one of Avery’s coworkers watched her silently mope.
What Avery didn’t know was that her coworkers had noticed this loneliness. One did. This one in particular was Gracie, who had been there the longest after Avery, and knew that Avery had been on her own since a young age. Gracie was only a few years older, but she felt as though Avery somehow was more mature than her, and isolated. She didn’t know why, however, but felt like she could possibly work up the courage to reach out and see if Avery wanted to open up to her at a later time. She would have reached out to Avery sooner, but it felt as though that once she finished cleaning up the kitchen for the night, Avery was already gone before she could ask. Gracie was one of the preppers and line cooks while Avery skated and waited tables, which made it hard to get her to slow down, and their breaks hardly aligned with one another. But today would be different, she promised herself. She told herself that she would ask Avery tonight to come with her to the club tomorrow. She knew both of their schedules and that both of them had the day off tomorrow.
It was now or never.
Gracie calculated that Avery had about seven minutes left on her break, same as Gracie herself. Her palms were sweaty. She was nervous that she would be rejected. Now was the best time to do it, if she really would ask Avery tonight.
Stumbling over to the blonde in the booth, Gracie approached Avery. To her, Avery was beautiful and had her own unique style with the pink strip in her hair and the fishnets she wore under her uniform skirt. Gracie wished she had her confidence.
Despite being standoffish, Avery always smiled at her coworkers, so Gracie wasn’t any different. Avery smiled up at her as she approached. “Hey Grace, what’s up?” Avery asked, flipping the paper she was writing over, then sat up straighter.
Gracie scratched the back of her neck. “Sorry if I’m asking on such late notice, but if you’re not busy would you like to come clubbing with my boyfriend and me tomorrow night?” The question came out in stumbled words, so Gracie hoped that they were understandable to Avery, “I just realized that we’ve been working together for two years and we’ve never even stayed over extra for a drink or anything. It felt wrong to me in a way.” She smiled timidly.
Avery blinked up at her coworker in shock. Gracie was…sort of like her. Gracie kept to herself at work, though once when Avery was working, she had waited at her coworker’s table when she was out for some friends, and seemed to be a social butterfly then. Avery still treated her with kindness outside of work.
Avery stared up at the dark-skinned girl and admired how pretty she was with her curly dark black hair she had to keep pinned up and hidden while on the job. It was hard to believe that she even stuck around at a cook job when she could be out there and be a model or something.
“I don’t see why not,” Avery replied, smiling at her, “I’m off and if I take another shift, I would be doing TOO much overtime. So yeah, that sounds fun. Do you want to make plans to maybe do our hair together and makeup? I also have a couple dresses I could wear. I’ll bring them over.” Watching Gracie’s bright brown eyes wide when she answered did make her feel happier in a way, “I could come over, or you could come over to my place.”
Gracie nearly bounced off the floor. Avery wouldn’t realize that she had just opened Pandora’s jar. “OMG, that would be amazing!” She clapped her hands in excitement, “You can come over to my place, I have all KINDS of makeup to share with you. Just text me through my personal number. Can I write it down?” she pointed to the piece of paper that Avery’s hand had remained on top of the entire time.
Avery looked at it and handed it over hesitantly, “Yeah, sure.” She watched carefully as Gracie wrote her number out, and made sure she didn’t flip the page. She was a bit anxious for others to find out she was sending letters to someone who had been arrested.
“Text me tonight so I can text you my address ASAP! I don’t have anything going on, so I’ll be back at home with my boyfriend. Feel free to come over any time! This is going to be so much fun.” Gracie giggled, “Oh, we only have a minute left of our break! We should get back to work. It’ll help make time pass for the rest of the night!” She turned on the ball of her feet and rushed back into the kitchen. She stopped for a moment to look back at Avery, “Don’t forget to text me!” And then she was gone.
That wasn’t so bad… Gracie thought to herself, Avery is actually an interesting person. I shouldn’t have judged her so quickly. With that thought, she returned to her work.
Avery didn’t personally mind being a couple minutes late returning and took her time to slip back into her skates, sliding her notepad into her uniform apron. She chuckled quietly to herself at the encounter with Gracie. She didn’t realize Gracie had so much energy in her. Though she had to think to herself for a moment—Gracie had been so nervous about approaching her? Did Avery give off that vibe…? Was she just that unapproachable to others?
Shaking off some creeping thoughts, Avery skated back into the room, where her shift was as normal for the rest of the night. When she returned home, she was almost too tired to shower but did anyway because she did not want her bed to smell like grease. So, she took a long hot shower, taking her time to wash the smell off herself before she went to bed, not even adding to Samson’s letter for the night, too exhausted from her long shift. She did make sure to text Gracie before she passed out.
When Avery awoke, she was more sore than usual. Honestly, she was considering texting Gracie to cancel. The longer she lay there in bed, teetering back and forth, the more she began to think about the day. She had already promised her coworker to go out for the night, and she didn’t like the thought of chickening out and then facing Gracie at work the next day. Plus, it would probably do her good to get out to somewhere that wasn’t the grocery store. This soreness would pass.
But did she really want to face the Boom Box again? After what had happened with Velvet and Veneer, and now her own personal trauma of having her own art stolen, that place seemed almost…traumatic for her now. Even if nothing remotely traumatic happened to her in it.
Avery released a long breath. “Okay, stop thinking or you’ll start to spiral. Let’s get up and do something,” she encouraged herself and stood, stretching her long limbs above her head. If her body could make cracking sounds, then it would have.
Avery checked the time. It was only 9am. She sent a text to Gracie, seeing that she had texted her address late last night, probably around the time when they both got home. I just got up. Going to get ready. Do you want breakfast while I’m getting some? There, that seemed friendly, right?
Gracie texted back immediately, making Avery wonder if she was staring at her phone the entire morning, waiting for Avery to text. Yes pls! A coffee and a burrito if possible! ^0^
Will do! How do you like your coffee? After texting, she set her phone aside to brush her hair and look at herself in the mirror. She ran her fingers over the pink strip in her hair, seeing that it didn’t look as glossy as usual. Was your natural hair color supposed to fade this early? She brushed her teeth and then tended to her pets.
“Sorry guys, I can’t let you out today. I’ll be out all day. But here’s some extra treats to hold you over until then.” She took them out of their pen and allowed them to eat the snacks in her lap. When they were done, she put them back and returned to her phone. She picked it off her kitchen counter and checked to see if Gracie had answered her text. She had, so Avery made a mental note to her coffee order.
Avery’s fingers acted out of instinct, and she found herself looking up Samson on her phone. When no name popped up, she realized that she was about to text a man’s number that she didn’t even have—but a number she realized she desperately wanted. This made her blush to herself before she went and looked for Samson’s letter where she had started but not quite finished yet. She wanted to finish writing to him, but she didn’t want to keep Gracie waiting.
“I’ll finish you tomorrow morning before work,” she promised to Samson as if he was right in front of her, then set the letter down on the kitchen island where she did most of her writing.
Avery took her bag and headed out the door after she dressed. Today she was in a black t-shirt and pink skirt with fishnets. She had brought with her a dress or two for the club, though wondered if Gracie would make them go out shopping for some together. She secretly hoped not.
There was a coffee shop near the bus stop that Avery often visited on the days she went grocery shopping. She went ahead and got their coffees and two burritos before making sure that they were wrapped up nicely in a bag and secured. Sometimes the roads in Mount Rageous were crazy fast and tossed you back and forth, and Avery didn’t want to start this day with coffee all over herself or her dresses.
The ride took about fifteen minutes, and sure enough, the bus was fast, tossing Avery around in the back. Had she not needed to bring so much with her, she would have just skated and saved herself the aches and pains in her arms and legs. She pulled the brake for the bus driver when she neared the street that Gracie had texted her and then stood. When she exited the bus, she immediately texted Gracie, Hey I just got off the bus and I’m close. Do you think that you could step outside so I can see where you’re at?
There had been no response back immediately, though very did see the seen marker pop up under the text almost instantly. Her face was still buried in her phone when she heard someone call her name, “AVERY! I’M OVER HERE!”
Avery looked side to side but saw no one. All there were, was the apartments stretching down from both left and right.
“I MEAN UP HERE!”
Avery then looked up and saw Gracie standing on a fourth story balcony. She was waving her hand back and forth erratically while smiling. She cupped her mouth when she called out, “CUT THROUGH THE BUILDING IN THE CENTER AND I’LL MEET YOU DOWNSTAIRS!”
“Okay!” Avery called out but not nearly as loud as Gracie, so she wasn’t sure if her coworker had heard her. Gracie smiled anyway and disappeared back into her apartment.
As she had been told, Avery cut through the center of the apartments, where there were stairs, and waited in case that was where she was supposed to be. Sure enough, she heard the loud tapping of frantic shoes before Gracie made an appearance. She was wearing shorts, a white hoodie that had rabbit ears coming off the top of it, and house slippers. It was strange to see her outside of her work uniform.
“Good morning!” Gracie said excitingly, greeting Avery by kissing both her cheeks. It was a bit of a greeting that was too far into Avery’s bubble, but she didn’t voice that. Gracie immediately took the food out of her hands, making Avery’s load lighter. “We only have to go up one flight of stairs to the lobby, and then we can go into the elevator.”
Avery smiled and teased, “Thank god. You scared me for a moment when I saw you on the fourth floor. I’m on the third floor in my apartment, and our elevator breaks often.”
Gracie giggles, “You should move here then. The maintenance here is pretty fabulous!”
Avery thought to herself, If I could only afford it. Gracie and I work the same job, but she also has her boyfriend to help pitch in for rent…
“Oh shoot, I forgot to ask if your boyfriend wanted anything for breakfast.”
Gracie scoffed playfully and waved her hand, “Psh, don’t worry about him. He can fend for yourself. Thank you SO much for breakfast, it smells so good! Where did you get it?”
Avery followed Gracie up the stairs and to the elevator, “There’s this coffee shop kinda in the center of my apartments. It’s an amazing hang out place, and the food and coffee is—and don’t tell the boss—so much better than at the diner. I go there every other week, if not every week. It’s called the Truffle Tower ironically. Maybe the two of us can go together after work one day.”
“I would SO love that!” Gracie squeaked and pressed the button to the fourth floor, continuing to talk as the elevator went up, “My boyfriend is home but he won’t bother us. I told him to play video games all morning if he had to. I’m so excited to have a girls day out!” She tried not to jump while they were in the elevator, but once they stepped out she leaped for joy, unable to contain herself.
This made Avery laugh and snort, “Are you SURE you need this coffee? You’re bouncing off the walls!” she teased.
Gracie was too pumped to stop bouncing, even as they made it to her door. There was a doormat in front that said, Only come in if you have my delivery. “Gods yes, I’ll need more bean juice if you want to keep this party in motion! Oh, here’s my place.” She unlocked the door and stepped inside.
Upon stepping inside, Avery was greeted with an apartment that was luxurious compared to hers. The walls were light blue and the furniture had a gray, blue, or black modern tone to them. She could see the balcony with glass sliding doors, where Gracie had called out to her earlier. Avery almost gasped out loud.
What Avery was almost greeted with was a tall male with dark blue hair and pale skin. He was wearing a hoodie and boxer briefs, and was also in the middle of eating cereal messily.
“TROY! I TOLD YOU TO GET DRESSED, WE HAVE A GUEST OVER!” Gracie screamed and grabbed an orange off the counter, throwing it at him.
Troy laughed and grabbed the orange with one hand, the other still wrapped around his bowl, “I’m not starving myself for you, woman! Fine, I’m going!” He took the orange and the bowl and disappeared into one of the rooms, closing the door.
Gracie released a dramatic sigh, and for a moment she seemed to calm down, “Sorry about that. He doesn’t like to listen to the words I say!” She scoffs and takes Avery to her kitchen island. It was much longer and had a better countertop than Avery’s back at home. “Let’s eat here before I starve myself. Do you want anything back for breakfast?” she asked calmly as she took out the burrito box and the coffee labeled with her name.
Avery returned the smile and shook her head, “No way. I asked because it’s a treat from me.” She took her own coffee and removed the protective top that prevented spills and dove it, “I forgot to ask what meat you wanted on your burrito, so I hope sausage was okay. I got bacon for myself in case you didn’t like it.”
“Sausage was a fine choice! Thank you again!”
As they ate, it was silent, but only for a moment before Gracie began to speak again, “I’m really excited to go clubbing tonight. I heard that there’s going to be something exciting going on at the Boom Box tonight. Have you seen it on the news?”
Avery tried not to pale. Luckily her pink skin never seemed to lose much color, “No. I guess I haven’t lately. What’s going on?”
“I’m not quite sure yet…But I heard that it’s going to be AMAZING! It’s a surprise but it’s being announced tonight. I’m thrilled you’re going. It gets lonely with two people, especially when the other person wants to go do something else. With you and my boyfriend, there will always be someone there! Have you been clubbing at the Boom Box before?”
Avery tried not to hesitate, but her words faltered for a moment, “Oh, yeah. Once or twice. But I haven’t since I started picking up evening and double shifts.”
Gracie pouted her bottom lip, “That sucks. I see you working your ass off all the time. You deserve some time to rest.”
Avery shrugged it off, “I guess I’m just trying to save up some extra money.”
“But aren’t you burnt out or something?”
“Yeah, a bit, but at least I’m getting numbers saved up in my bank account.”
Gracie crossed her arms as she scoffed, “That won’t do you well, Avery! You’ll work yourself into a grave at this point. From now on, you and I are going to have some more girl time. Got it?”
Avery chuckled, not arguing with her coworker, though she worried that this wouldn’t work out. “Alright, alright. We’ll see how tonight goes, and go from there.”
Gracie agreed and then the two finished off their food. Avery went into the kitchen and washed the grease from her hands. “Where’s your trash?”
“It’s under the sink, but I’ve got it!” Gracie insisted and took their breakfast trash, throwing it away for them. “I see you brought some dresses. Can I see them?” she asked excitingly,
“Sure, I wasn’t sure what to bring really. I don’t have many dresses, but I dug out a couple. It’s been a while since I wore them though.”
Avery pulled out three dresses. There was a silky black one that reached her knees, and a blue one that had a low V line with a window in the back as well. It was the third dress that caught Gracie’s attention, however—it was a neon pink latex dress. The color was the same as the pink strip in her hair. The moment that Avery lifted it, Gracie covered her mouth and gasped, “Oh my god, try that one on, I think that one’s perfect!”
Avery blushed and held the dress. She looked down at it. Indeed it had been a while since she had worn this particular dress. In fact, it was probably a year at most? The last time she had was when she was at a Velvet and Vene…a…a concert. Yeah. How could she have forgotten? She had the sudden urge to shove this dress into the toilet and flush it until it was gone, but she couldn’t let Gracie know that she was upset. Instead, she smiled and nodded, “Yeah, of course. Where’s your bathroom?”
Gracie pointed to a door to the left, “That one. While you’re getting dressed, I’m going to get my makeup out. I already know the perfect look for you!”
Avery disappeared into the bathroom and changed into the pink dress. She hesitated to look at herself in the mirror but smiled when she did. The dress still fit her perfectly. It was a tube top that reached her midthigh. It wasn’t too short or too long. It also didn’t squeeze her, which surprised her considering she worked in such a greasy place. Her neck looked exposed, however, so she wished she had grabbed some of her jewelry to help her not feel as naked. With some fishnets and her long black boots, her outfit would be complete! Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad wearing this dress again.
Avery didn’t know what to expect when she stepped out of the bathroom. Gracie was seated on her couch and gasped the moment she saw her, her jaw nearly hitting the floor. “Oh. My. God. AVERY, YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL!” She almost cried, “Do you have shoes to go with it?!”
“I have my knee-high black boots since they could go with any of the dresses, and I plan on wearing my fishnets. I was wondering if you had a spare necklace I could borrow? I totally forgot how exposed this dress makes me feel right here.” She touched her neck.
“Girl, I was thinking the same THING! We’ll look for something before we leave okay? Now, tell me, which makeup style do you prefer…” Gracie motioned for Avery to sit down next to her.
Together, the two spent the morning and afternoon prepping for the evening to come. They watched a show together, and when it was closer to time, Gracie did their makeup. Avery had a glittery pink eyeshadow along with some black that smudged all around her eye. She also had lip gloss that made her lips look sparkly but didn’t take away from the masterpiece that was her eyes. Gracie chose something more teal. Her outfit was a teal crop top and skirt that could have been one dress had Gracie not wanted to show off her midriff. She also wore teal makeup to match. Her top lip was black while her bottom was the same blue as her dress. The two looked ready for the club, and Avery felt ready for it too.
After a small fit between Gracie and Troy, the two were soon out the door. Gracie was glued to Avery’s side the entire time, hugging her arm, as Troy walked behind him. Gracie happily chatted the entire time, even through the bus trip to the Boom Box.
Standing outside the Boom Box made Avery’s knees feel weak. Though the real nerves hit her the moment she passed the bouncer and stepped into the club. The lights blasted the colors of the rainbows and the combination of the others screaming along with music made it nearly impossible to hear Gracie despite the girl speaking directly into her ear.
Avery stood in the middle of the Boom Box now, but she recalled the familiar excitement she felt when she had gone to see Velvet and Veneer for the first time. She stood in the loud, crowded room now, but her mind was elsewhere, further away into the reaches of her memory. This brought Avery back so many months ago. Maybe even a year? Back when Rivers and her were rising to the top. Until they suddenly weren’t. Velvet and Veneer had hit the charts and hit them hard enough that it nearly knocked River off the charts. Avery believed that was the reason Rivers turned on her—when she realized Avery didn’t want to do more to rise back to the top. That’s why Rivers had stolen her work.
Staring at the stage, she saw Veneer and Velvet performing. She really did feel like she was living a sweet dream listening to them.
Avery was at the front of the crowd, her hands in the air reaching for the popstars. She was in the VIP crowd, screaming in pure joy. She swore Veneer turned toward her and winked, making her feel butterflies in her stomach and a blush in her cheeks. This was pure bliss, she had noticed him!
Sweet Dreams continued to play through the club, and even with the crowd joining in on the fun of singing, the twin’s voices carried the most. Velvet’s voice rang the loudest, and Avery wished that she could hear Veneer more. He was her favorite out of the two, though she never would admit it out loud since everyone else seemed to be Velvet fans.
“Alright, Mount Rageons!” Velvet held the microphone to her lips, her voice blaring over the music as it died down, “We’re so appreciative of our fans that we decided to give you all a gift. From us!” She grabbed some shirts and started to throw some out into the crowd. When someone caught the shirt, the fan screamed loudly.
When Veneer grabbed t-shirts of his own, that’s why Avery’s stomach dropped. She screamed as loud as she could and threw her hands into the air, trying to reach as far into the air as she could. For a moment, she swore he looked at her, flashing a charming smile her way. She wasn’t imagining it. They made eye contact. Veneer took one of the shirts and tossed them her way. Avery nearly climbed over the crowd to catch it. Some people tugged on it, but she refused to let it go. She threw it over her body before anyone could snatch it from her. The shirt was a fluorescent neon green, which glowed in the dark. It was completely unique! Holding it and wearing it almost made her cry. She pulled it over her pink dress and hugged it tight.
“I LOVE YOU VENEER!!” She screamed, cheering for her favorite idol.
Veneer winked, “I love you too!”
Avery nearly fainted on the spot. He noticed her!
Velvet took the front again, her brother falling behind as always. She looked over to the crowd as if they were her puppets and called out, “Whoever caught the t-shirts get backstage passes to meet my brother and me PERSONALLY! We look forward to seeing you all!” She blew kisses to the crowd, “Goodnight everyone!”
Avery’s jaw fell open, and her knees became weak. She was about to faint for real. Holding onto that shirt felt more like a priority than anything. She couldn’t let anyone steal it from her! She pushed through the crowd and found the twin’s bodyguards, who were intimidating.
“I…I have a pass.” She pointed to her shirt nervously. Her heart was beating faster the more she thought of the two, but specifically Veneer.
The guards leaned in closer and observed the shirt closer before they parted the way, allowing Avery to squeeze past her. One of the guards followed her down the hallway.
“To the door to the left,” he said from behind her, making her jump. The closer she came to the door, and soon her hand was on it. She was about to meet the people who inspired her the most…
Avery snapped out of it. She had been so out of it that she didn’t remember where she was or what she was going. Something felt wrong. When Avery looked up to the stage, she noticed her. A beautiful woman with a sparkling blue dress and pure white hair that touched her waist. Rebel Rivers. She was on the stage with small creatures on her shoulders. They were Trolls…?
Everyone quieted for Rivers as she called out to the crowd, “Brozone and I are happy to announce our collaboration and celebration of smaller artists with our Battle of the Bands! Brozone and I will open with some banging music before we ourselves will become judges. MAKE SURE TO COME BACK NEXT MONTH AND SIGN UP STARTING TODAY! The first ten people to sign up get autographs from Brozone and me! Cheers, my loves!” She blew a kiss to the crowd, and everyone screamed their approval.
Everyone except Avery.
This had been what Gracie was talking about earlier in the day. A special announcement.
Avery felt as though she was about to cry. She couldn’t breathe. Remembering everything upset her, and now Rivers was in the same room as her. When Gracie was preoccupied with her boyfriend, she slipped out of the Boom Box, her legs heavy as she dragged them. The wind felt cold against her cheeks as she cried to herself. She shouldn’t have come tonight.

summary: To avoid being sold into marriage, you decide to run away, and you meet Pirate Captain Eddie Munson, who shows you a life you never knew was possible. But with your husband to be unhappy about being jilted and determined to get you down the aisle, is a life of happiness and freedom possible?
It was now or never. Tonight was your only chance to escape the life that had been forced upon you. You were under no illusions, you knew this happened; you'd watched your friends over the years be forced into marriages, some were sold, and some had been arranged since before they were born. You had, however, always thought this would never happen to you. Your mother had spent her life promising you that you'd experience marriage the right way, by falling in love, and if you chose it, and your father had always seemed to be in agreement.
But when you were fifteen, your mother died, cruelly, without any explanation or warning. One day she was alive, the next she wasn't. At first, your father did the best he could. He worked hard, but always made time to come home and cook dinner. He'd tell you about his day, you'd tell him about yours, and as you helped clear up, he'd tell you stories about your mother, ones you'd never heard before. But a few months later, things changed. He started going to the pub more often, drinking a lot more, staying out late before coming home to pass out in his chair, if he ever came home at all. You got used to the distance your father put between you both, even if it did break your heart, it was awkward when he was home, he could barely look at you, let alone say three words to you.
So it was unnerving when you came home from spending the day at the market with Nancy, to find your father, not only relatively sober but also cooking dinner - something he hadn't done in years - and you naively thought that maybe things were looking up, that he wasn't going to let his grief ruin his relationship with you. But you were wrong, he was ready to let his grief completely eviscerate any relationship you two had. He told you he was selling you into marriage, that he'd had an offer he just couldn't refuse. He tried to soften the blow with the news it would be to the Prince, but you didn't care.
You argued, cried, and begged, but his mind was made up. You screamed at him that you'd never forgive him, that you hated him, that your mother would hate him too, but he didn't flinch, he didn't waver. And so you and Nancy made an escape plan. While Nancy came up with the intricate details, you tried to make sense of your father's decision. You didn't think he needed the money, but you also had no idea what your father got up to anymore. Maybe he could no longer stand the sight of you, unable to live with the constant reminder of the love of his life, and how she was cruelly snatched away from him.
You didn't want to leave your home, the place where you grew up, that held the memories of your mother, memories that were slowly fading with time; but you knew that you'd rather leave and possibly die on the run with your best friend than live a life imprisoned in a marriage you never wanted. You just needed to get as far away from this town as possible, somewhere you could change your name and be free. So you grabbed a duffel bag, stuffed as many clothes as you could inside it - which wasn't many - begrudgingly leaving all of your mother's mementos, apart from a charcoal picture of her that you and drawn, her necklace, and your favorite ring of hers. Then after one last look around your bedroom, you slipped out of the window and shimmied down the makeshift blanket rope, where Nancy was waiting for you.
"Are you ready?" Nancy asked, wiping the tears from your cheeks with her thumbs. "We've got this. You've got this." She whispered repeatedly, as she led you away from life as you knew it.
***
You pulled your hood over your face a little further and followed Nancy into the pub. You couldn't be too careful, you had no idea if this was a pub your dad frequented, and with your mother's death having been the talk of the town, you were worried you'd be recognized.
The small pub was dingy and dim, but it was still busy and loud, everyone too invested in their own business to pay attention to you, and you managed to find an empty table near the back. You sat with your head low as Nancy ordered two bowls of soup and two small glasses of wine. "You'll be thanking me later," she said, "we'll need our strength, we can't be running away on empty stomachs!"
As you tucked into the soup, which was swiftly brought over, Nancy told you the first phase of the plan.
"The best way out of town, and the easiest way, is on a ship."
"Okay, and how do we acquire a ship?" You asked, between spoonfuls of soup.
"I have a contact," Nancy replied, tilting her head towards the rowdiest table. It didn't take a genius to know that the table was occupied by pirates, it was pretty obvious who they were from the way they were dressed, and how they acted like they owned the place. The men were singing loudly, shouting above each other and laughing, as they groped the women sat on their laps. "See the guy in the middle? That's Steve Harrington."
"Wait, Nancy...Steve "The King" Harrington? First Mate of The Freaks? Nance, you can't be serious!"
"Oh, I'm completely serious. This is our only option. In a few hours, the streets are going to be crawling with royal guards searching for you, we need to do this." Nancy said as she stood up and brushed down the front of her coat.
"I thought you said this would be easy." You mumbled, and she laughed.
"I said it was the easiest way, not that it would be easy." She smiled at your worried expression and leaned on the table as she asked, "Do you trust me?"
"Of course I do." You replied, without missing a beat.
"Then I'll be back soon." She turned away, just as you shot up.
"Nance, wait!" You managed to grab her hand and pulled her back, making her groan. "You can't just go over there and ask him for a favor!"
"Why? Because he's a pirate?"
"Yes! You know what they say about him and his crew."
Nancy pulled her arm from your grip and took your hands in hers. "I know, okay? This whole thing is a risk, but your freedom is worth it, right? It is to me." You nodded, and she carried on. "Look, I know Steve, okay? He's a pirate, so he has access to a ship, and I know he'll help us."
"You know Steve Harrington?" You couldn't help but smirk, and Nancy rolled her eyes.
"We have a...history, okay? He wasn't always a pirate, you know?"
You stared at Nancy, your mouth open slightly, making her laugh as she put two fingers under your chin, closing your mouth for you. "Okay fine," you replied, "but you're not going over there alone. He's still a risk, right?"
"Of course he is, he's a pirate. But if plan A doesn't work- Nancy dropped one of your hands and opened her coat slightly, showing off a revolver in a holster attached to her skirt. "- I have a plan B."
You masked the revolver with her coat again and sighed, before nodding. "Okay fine, let's do this. But promise me, one way or another, we're getting out of here."
"On my life." Nancy promised, giving your hand a squeeze before she pulled you towards the table of pirates.
***
You had heard all the tales about Steve "The King" Harrington, First Mate of The Freaks, and about how he grew up right here in town, his family wealthy, but not very present. Steve got into trouble around town, but with his family name and his charismatic nature, he got away with most of it before things escalated. He left it all behind for a life of piracy, though, and joined The Freaks, where he became infamous, the crew's status almost hitting mythological heights, where the line between truth and storytelling became blurred, until one day, they were the most fearsome crew on the seas.
You used to hear the rumors that Steve Harrington had died almost instantly after leaving home. People used to say "there was no way this pirate could possibly be little Steve Harrington, who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and who couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag" and laugh as if the thought of someone dying was funny. Then one day, Steve Harrington rocked up in town, squashing the rumors that he'd died once and for all, and he proved he and his newfound family were a force to be reckoned with by claiming this very pub as The Freaks' new hangout whenever they were in town.
Not only was Steve a fierce pirate, but he was a handsome one at that. You weren't sure how much of what you had heard was exaggerated, but his attractiveness certainly hadn't been. Your heart battered against your rib cage, you'd never been around someone this attractive before, and on top of that, he was a pirate too. You had no idea what was about to happen, or what to even expect, yet Nancy looked calm, completely unfazed by what you were walking into. It was just another reminder that - although she was your best friend, and you knew more about her than anyone else did - there was still so much you didn't know about her.
"Nancy Wheeler!" Steve shouted, slamming his tankard down on the wooden table as he stood up, kicking his chair over. He jumped on the table, walking over everything before he jumped off in front of her. "What the hell are you doing here?" He asked, embracing her. From over her shoulder, his eyes found you, and he raised his eyebrow. "Whose this?"
You felt scrutinized as he stared at you with narrow eyes, and you prayed he didn't know you or your father. "This is my friend, we need your help." Nancy replied, and Steve's eyes darted back to her.
"Does your friend have a name?"
"Her name isn't important, we just need to get out of town. Tonight." Nancy said. "You owe me, Harrington, remember?"
Steve laughed loudly, making everyone in the pub stop and stare for a second. "I should've known you'd not forget that!"
"Been holding onto it for six years." Nancy grinned. "So, is that a yes?"
Steve glanced at you both, before he clapped his hand on her shoulder, his large rings catching your eye. "I owe you, remember? I need to talk to Cap though, so meet me at the dock in an hour, can you keep out of trouble for that long?"
"I think we'll manage," Nancy said. "Thanks, Steve." They hugged again before Nancy pulled away and linked her arm around yours.
"See, that wasn't so hard, was it?" She grinned as you walked away, and you laughed.
"Why was it so easy, Nance?" You asked, and she patted your arm as she tutted.
"Don't worry about it."
***
When you and Nancy arrived at the dock, Steve was already waiting for you. He was smoking a cigarette, leaning against the wooden shed, illuminated from above by the one dim light attached to the building.
"Ladies," He greeted, taking one last drag of the cigarette before flicking it into the ocean. "Are you ready to become pirates?"
Your heart began to beat faster again, the nerves almost becoming too much for you. The tiny voice of doubt in the back of your head became louder as you started to question whether life on the run, forever looking over your shoulder was worth it.  Nancy grabbed your hand and squeezed it three times, almost as if she was reading your mind, knowing what you were thinking.
"We've got this. You've got this." Nancy repeated the affirmations she had said back at your father's house, and you smiled. "Let's go be free."
"Thank you." You mouthed, as Steve led you towards the large ship that loomed in the distance.
"Okay so, the Cap's a little...eccentric, chaotic, he's a little bit of a mess, to be honest with you, but he's alright if you stay on his good side," Steve explained. "So just do what he says, and everything will be fine."
You weren't sure what you were expecting, but the ship was stunning. The wood was dark, almost black, with the words Corroded Coffin etched in gold on the side. There were a few circular windows dotted along the side of the ship, red cloth hanging inside the rooms, acting like curtains, and two large white sails loomed above you. You followed Steve up the large plank, taking his hand when he offered to help you hop over the edge onto the deck.
The ship was huge, the deck bustling with members of the crew running around getting the ship ready. There were people mopping the wooden floor, setting the sails, rolling barrels, and carrying boxes down into the cabins under the deck. It was so chaotic and you were shocked by how busy the ship was. It was overwhelming, and judging from the way Nancy's nails were digging into the palm of your hand, she was feeling the same way, which was slightly comforting.
"So, these are the runaways! The damsels in distress!" A loud voice came from behind you, and you and Nancy whirled around.
You didn't need anyone to tell you that this was the Captain. Everyone on the ship was staring up at the curly-haired man in admiration; he was clad in black leather trousers, and a billowing white shirt as he balanced on the edge of the ship, holding only a rope with one hand for support. You were mesmerized by him; just like everyone else, you couldn't take your eyes off him. He jumped from the edge, onto the balcony, crossing it like he was a tightrope walker, his brown eyes never leaving yours. He was completely captivating, you had never seen anyone act this way before, and it was hard to tear your eyes away from him.
"We're not damsels in distress." Nancy said, the Captain's eyes finally leaving yours to look at her. You exhaled, you didn't realize you were even holding your breath, and you watched as the Captain jumped off the balcony, landing in front of you and Nancy. He looked you both up and down, his eyebrow raised, a slight smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
"Please, who are you trying to fool? You're damsels- probably from royalty, judging from the way you're dressed- who are so desperate to get out of town, that you're trusting pirates, of all people. Not just any pirate crew, but The Freaks!" He, and the crew, all laughed loudly and Nancy rolled her eyes.
"We're not royalty, just because we're dressed nicely, nor are we in distress, just because we need help." Nancy scowled, crossing her arms across her chest, and staring the Captain down. Nancy never failed to amaze you, she was always so fearless, no matter what she faced. She was the only person you could count on, the only person that had never let you down, and the only person you trusted with your life.
"I take it you're not the one running away." The Captain replied, turning his attention back to you. You took a leaf out of Nancy's book and held his gaze, although you were pretty sure Nancy didn't find it this hard to not drown in his beautiful eyeliner-covered eyes. If the First Mate was handsome, the Captain was beautiful, the most beautiful person you'd ever seen, if you were being honest. Luckily, before you made a fool of yourself, Nancy spoke for you.
"We're a package deal. If one's running, we both are."
He smirked, as he twisted the rings on his fingers. He was clearly amused by the two of you, and your doubts about your plan were growing. Trusting pirates was the worst decision you could make, and yet, here you were, trusting the worst pirates of all. It was so crazy, that even the Captain was in disbelief. You knew he thought you were both naive, and he could use that to his advantage if he wanted to. You had to make sure you were ready for anything. Before Nancy or the Captain could trade more jibes at each other, Steve clasped his hand on the Captain's shoulder and chuckled.
"Come on, Eddie, leave them alone. We need to go, now." Steve interjected, and Eddie winked at you before clapping.
"Alright, fine," Eddie said, his eyes slowly trailing up and down your body once again. "Robin!" He yelled, and you saw a brunette, freckled-faced woman scurry across the deck from next to the ship's wheel. "Would you be so kind as to take these two to your chamber, they need to change."
"Change?" You squeaked, and Eddie's head whipped around to you. A toothy grin spread across his face and you cursed yourself for being so awkward.
"Oh, she speaks!" He said, loudly and dramatically, the ship erupting with laughter again and a hot wave of embarrassment washed over you. "Yes, Princess, you need to change. You're on the run and you don't look like you belong on my ship, you do see how that might end up being a bit of a problem, don't you?"
You nodded, and Eddie smirked once again. "Make them look like pirates, Robin!" He said, and as Robin ushered you down some stairs, you couldn't help but wonder what the fuck you had gotten yourselves into.

The semi-annual trip to Pleasant Valley had been delayed this time around due to unforeseen and unwelcomed circumstances that were beyond your control. Namely, a set of hunters that had been on your tail for the better part of four months. They had been smart, annoyingly persistent, and meticulous in their planning. Far more trouble than you had met in recent years.
Once you had felt confident that you had shaken their incessant pestering and attempts on your life, you gathered all the necessary supplies and headed out to the small, off the beaten path, ghost town. Well, cemetery, but it had the feeling of a ghost town. The energy there was indescribable. Then again, after such a tragedy, it didn't come as a surprise. The spirits likely lingered there, something you understood even if others didn't.
You had first come across the resting site of the small town in your travels for your doctorate, focusing on the fall out of a war on small towns in the south from an economic, social, and overall day to day living standpoint. It was hard when records of those that had been destroyed as a byproduct and casualty of war were wiped from the map. Before heading back, you decided to take the summer and explore some more rural areas of South Carolina and Georgia. Besides, there were plenty of supplies for your other studies to be found in that took time, too.
The tug in your gut had you making that left hand turn for the first time. The graveyard was large. A place full of sorrow, of mourning, of anger. But so were most places like this when lives were irrevocably changed. Which, really, was a civilized way to say slaughtered. From your understanding after reading the gravestones and doing some digging, that was what had occurred in Pleasant Valley. A massacre of innocent lives. It was a frequent happening when it came to times of war but made it no less tragic or horrific.
After that first visit, there was something that kept pulling you back time and time again. Before you realized it, you had routinely visited the place twice yearly for years. It was a place to calm your mind and gather yourself. Feel recharged but also perform those darker rituals that required a draining amount of energy. There was enough in the place that you could draw from it and get done what was needed. The occasional necromancy and such. Not things that you dabbled in too often but when it was needed, and unfortunately, there was a time and place for it, then being in a place like Pleasant Valley helped.
This year, it felt entirely different. More energy, more lively. Typically, you came during summer and winter, but because your winter trip had been delayed, you were entering the area during mid-spring. Lively. That was an odd way to frame it, and your brain stuck on it when the normal left was marked with a giant detour sign. You stopped the car and stared at it for several long moments. The lettering had been poorly done with the e of detour backward. Enough to make you laugh, but at the same time, there was a nagging concern. Had someone desecrated the resting place of these poor souls?
It was a smart idea to see what you were walking into before you did. Metaphorically speaking, of course. Parking the car on the shoulder, you settled back into the driver seat, closed your eyes, muttering the words of the spell, and concentrating hard. Astral projection was always one of those spells that you could never quite get the hang of, but this was worth the attempt.
It had to be repeated twice before you felt the telltale heaviness and then lightness of your limbs. Traveling slowly down the dirt road, hands in your pockets, you still took time to appreciate the beauty of the natural surroundings. Right as you were about to cross under the arch that marked the threshold, you were thrown back into your body. Gasping and coughing, it took a moment for your spirit to settle back in and breathing to come normally. Well, that was new. Something was happening. Something not of the natural world. With your intrigued spiked, the tires nearly peeled on the gravel as you turned the car down the road towards the familiar spot.
Instead of a graveyard, you were met with a quiet, quaint looking town. Something akin to what one would see in the south during the eighteen hundreds. You should know well enough. As you got closer and closer, there was a buzz in the air that felt electric. The anger that hung around Pleasant Valley was present, but this was far different. If an energy could feel hungry, that was what you would have described it as. There was a gathering of people ahead, surrounding two cars. The cheering and hollering were evident from a ways back. Your skin pricked, and your hair stood on end. And in that moment, you understood perfectly.
It was dangerous. So very dangerous for any living being to be here right now. These weren't people. They were vengeful spirits. How had you not made the connection before now? Was it because there wasn't enough energy when you normally stopped by.
“More guests!” The patch was recognizable. After so many trips to the site, you knew that it could only be George Buckman. Whether you made it out of this or not was up to how it was played. And that required a private conversation with the man that seemed to be pulling all the strings. Offering help seemed like your best chance. Should you feel bad about offering the lives of those who had unwittingly found their way here? The answer was yes. But would you? No, not likely. Who was dimwitted enough to follow a sign like that in today's day and age? Besides, fresh sacrificed blood was a hard commodity to come by unless you got your hands dirty yourself and even then, it could be iffy.
It took a little bit, and there were a few odd looks, as if people were trying to place exactly who you were to them. The familiarity of a place you had never been washed over you. It wasn't entirely true. You had never been to Pleasant Valley when it had existed with living people, homes, businesses, and the little quirks that came with such things. But you had been here before, had communed with the land and in ways with the spirits. In a way, they did know you, and you knew them.
Southern hospitality dictated a certain set of manners in return. That much you knew. Your history degree wasn't entirely useless after all. The sirs and ma'ams worked their way in, albeit a little unnaturally and awkward at times. Offers to help with whatever it is they were doing were made. They were declined each and every time but the offer was there.
There were other ways to be useful, though. Hex bags and a corresponding hex could provide easier targets for the souls stuck on this Earth. The problem was making them quick enough and properly placing them. You might be able to get one or two together and tucked hidden away, but would it be enough?
Before much thought could be put in, or you could gain a private audience with Mayor Buckman, someone else decided to grab your attention. Quite literally. The large hand clapped down on your shoulder, a firm touch that spoke a fraction of the strength it held.
“I think you and me need to have a chat, miss.” It felt like there was little room for argument. Nodding your consent, though it was hardly needed, the large man beside you was a presence that you would lose a physical fight against. And a fight would not help with your plans here. It was best to go along quietly and see what it was that he wanted to discuss. No one else was being pulled off on their own, at least not yet and no in a manner like this. Hopefully, you weren't marching towards your death.
The town was mostly out of sight by the time that the little walk had come to an end. You were finally able to turn and look at the man. Taller, broad shoulders. But an air about him. Another magic user. In some form or another.
“You're the one that comes around here.” It wasn't a question, a simple statement and acknowledgment that maybe some did know who you were. “Practices your witchcraft.”
“That is me.”
“You're late this year.” It shouldn't have been surprising, and yet, you were standing there, entirely caught off guard to the fact that the man knew your schedule had been entirely thrown off.
“I had a little problem to take care of,” you paused. “Well, not so little. Took me a good four months to handle. But, occasionally, things like that come up, someone tries to take my life, and it's a vicious circle for a short while.” An amused twitch of his lips was the response. You took that as a good sign for what was to come. It was all a matter of still carefully navigating the landscape.
“Yet, you are still here.”
“Well, did you think I was going to miss my routine just because I had two men trying to kill me?” At that, you ended up receiving a smile, which was counted as a victory.
“Why do you come back?” Now, that was something that you had asked yourself quite a bit over the last few years and never came up with a solid answer. Perhaps ones that sounded pleasing to the ear but never one that was genuine. Why not be honest with the spirits? More than you had been with yourself, at least. A small shrug came before the words started to flow.
“Because it always felt right.” A simple answer. “There was always something pulling me here, demanding attention and a commune. There was never really a solid explanation for it. I just knew the first time I passed something demanded, I show up, and that demand never ceased. The energy always felt right.”
“So perhaps you are the one.” The tilt of your head came unbidden, something that you couldn't help at the words grabbed your curiosity. Never one for chosen prophecies or the like, it was still something that was worth the intrigue. There didn't seem to be much more information forthcoming. “You do understand what is going to happen here?”
“I would be foolish to miss it in the air. Vengeful spirits create a certain…energy in the air. Intent shapes it and leaves lingering traces.” He nodded.
“Yet, you remain.”
“Admittedly, at first, I was worried someone had desecrated the graveyard. And when I felt something blocking me, I had to investigate. You all did catch me a little off guard with the whole, ya know, appearance thing going on.” He chuckled and nodded.
“I do suppose that would cause a bit of a shock upon arrival.” He nodded to himself and motioned for you to follow after him. This time, he wasn't leading you but rather trusting that you would be walking alongside him. Far more peaceful that way. There seemed to be people milling about, watching, but not really participating in anything now that there wasn't anyone to pay attention to them. You supposed you could understand such a thing. If you were stuck in a purgatory pattern like this, there wouldn't be much drive to do anything either.
“Didn't go getting lost now, did ya?” The mayor greeted with a wide smile, eye flickering back and forth between you and your companion, whose name that you never got.
“Think you and Granny Boone need to have a sit down with this one, sir.” There was an odd emphasis on some of the words, but whatever he had been trying to convey was apparently done successful as Buckman paused long enough to process the information.
“Really, now? Ain't that the darndest thing. We were just going to have a little chat, so why don't you just come along then?” This would be the make or break moment that had been looming since your arrival a few hours ago. Once again, you could only consent.
“Of course.” With Buckman taking over, you were led towards the small church in town, after it had been demanded that your former companion let Granny know that she was expected to attend the meeting.
During the short walk, you exchanged names properly, and there was an ease about it that could be appreciated. Rare was it that you got along well and right off the bat with others, a byproduct of the life that you led. A sense of calm that came from him, even though there was still that hint of rage simmering beneath the surface. As much as it would make others uncomfortable, you found a calming effect to it in the familiarity.
The church was void of everyone and everything, and while it wasn't exactly your favorite place to be but it wasn't the worst.
“Must be a reason he is thinking so highly of you, darling. You gonna explain or keep me in suspense?”
“Wouldn't it be easier to wait for the others?” Waiting meant that you wouldn't have to repeat yourself multiple times. It was far more preferable than spitting out the same explanation over and over and over. There was a moment of indecision, the choice flipping around before a sigh was given as an answer. He didn't have to wait long. The older woman who had been running the quote hotel of the town came in, eyeing you suspiciously. The response? A broad smile as you remained seated, allowing the two to gather around you.
“All right, Missy. Best start explaining what's going on.” Granny Boone was no nonsense. You liked her.
“Well, I've been coming to Pleasant Valley for years now, twice a year specifically. This is the first time that I've met any of the residents, though.” There was a tension that briefly filled the room, enough to give you pause and wonder if you had said the wrong thing before it broke and a sense of excitement took its place.
“Knew I recognized something about ya!” Buckman was practically joyous, while Boone remained a little more reserved but was all smiles like he was. “Looks like this year's festival is about to get a whole lot more interesting, ain't it?” Boone quickly batted at his knee.
“You haven't even asked yet. Don't get ahead of yourself.” The interaction was enough to make you smile.
“I'd be happy to help in any way that I can. Eye for an eye aren't just some fanciful words. I can spot others' work when I see it.”
“Ain't you a smart one.” You shrugged. “Well, we got our answer. We got our guests. All we need now is to get ready for the barbecue.” If you thought he was excited before, it was nothing compared to now. The man was all but vibrating with energy in his spot.
“I just have a quick question. And you may or may not be able to answer it for me. I've been coming here for years but this is the first time we have met, face to face, so to speak. Why now? Why not then?” There had been plenty of opportunities, but nothing had ever happened. The two looked at one another.
“Well, it's not always easy to appear as it is at other times. The more Yanks, the more it's worth the effort.” Interesting. Something caught, but the idea refused to fully form right yet. Stuffing that thought away for later, you nodded.
“Makes sense. Wasted time and energy if the reward isn't big enough.”
“Besides, you bring something with ya that just livens us all up a bit. Especially since you drop by at quieter times.” That idea drug forward a little further. Again, thought would be dedicated later in a quiet moment where you could concentrate on the feeling and what the idea was supposed to shape up to be.
“I suppose I should say I'm flattered.” The small laugh that accompanied the words had the other two smiling wider. It was a relaxed but giddy and anticipatory atmosphere. One that you found yourself sinking further and further into as the seconds ticked by. A place to stay. To be safe. The whispers tickled your consciousness. “Just direct me as to where I'm needed and what is expected of me. I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty if that's required.” Not to find joy in it. Maybe they did to some degree, but this was about avenging the egregious act that they had suffered. After suffering so long in a made purgatory, things started to twist a little bit, though.
“No use in sitting here like bumps on a log. We got work to do.” Buckman clapped and jumped to his feet. “Think I'm gonna keep you with me, pretty thing. Wanna see just whatcha can do.”
Boone went back to continue prepping whatever it was that she was in the middle of, something with the ladies that had arrived from your understanding. With her gone, it was just you and Buckman.
The seemingly jovial man was observing you still, though he was on his feet and motioning for you to follow.
“Ya know, ya been coming here so often, for so long, sort of makes ya an honorary resident of our little town.”
“Sort of feels like that.” There wasn't any use in lying or trying to deny that feeling. Being honest with the man had been your decision from the smart, so why stop with something as silly as telling him that there was something that made you feel so connected to this place. “Moved around a bunch as a kid. Never really had a set place, and that's sort of been the theme in my adult life, too. Moving minimizes the risk of being caught by those who would prefer to see me dead. Always liked it when we stayed in the south, though. Felt most at home. That subtle heat in the spring and fall. Different pace to life in the smaller towns. An abundance of ingredients for spells and such. Better energy, too. Something far more deeply rooted. Unless I visited places like Salem or Plymouth. Sometimes, there was less acceptance of the….well, lifestyle for lack of a better term but always made due.”
“That happen often? Someone chasing after ya like that?”
“Often enough. It's what delayed my appearance here this year. Though, I guess that it worked out in everyone's benefit in the end. Except for theirs….”
“Hm, then ya really won't have a problem helping us take care of these Yanks.”
“I've brought people back from the dead for less than honorable purposes. Yeah, I really don't mind helping you kill someone. Or in this case, someones given the turnout you have here.” The laugh that came from Buckman couldn't have been classified as anything but ecstatic and excited. A sound that others would likely think bordered on the sound of insane. For you, though? There wasn't a way to stop the grin that it brought. “My hands haven't been clean in many, many years. What's adding a little more?” And your view on the world and the people in it may have been twisted and just a little skewed, but it came with the territory.
“Just gonna have to gather up the town to make sure no accidents happen then. Let them know you are here helping.” He raised a hand to rub his chin, thoughts clearly going a mile a minute. Not that he could be blamed. You knew that while you were there to help and would, your presence ilkley threw a monkey wrench into whatever plans that they had.
While Buckman might have been accepting, it didn't mean that the rest of the town would be right away either. So a meeting would have been smart. You would have hated to cause a problem for one of the spirits because you had reason to defend yourself. They couldn't be hurt in the traditional sense and had probably gotten quite comfortable in their relative safety from physical harm. But, you weren't their usual prey, and while you didn't want to focus on it, having various methods of protection were floating through the back of your mind. Hopefully, there wasn't a need for it.
******************
It was a sight to behold, how quickly the spirits were able to create chaos, one that was under a tight control and allowed them such freedom to do as they pleased. Impressive, really. So much so that you were feeling immensely grateful that you weren't on the receiving end. No one was spared, and no corners were cut. The brutality of it wasn’t so uncommon to you that it gave a weak stomach, but on the same hand, it did press some sort of line. As complicit as you were, you kept your mouth shut. Besides, was there really room for you to talk? It was a reminder to yourself given all that you had done in your life.
There was such a captivating sort of aura around the entire thing, the passion and need that came from those around you enough to make you want to drop to your needs. All driven forward from desperation. If you helped them, how long would it take for them to finally know rest?
“He's getting away!” There was one that had just escaped the flaying knife of the cook, apparently not all the way dead. The urgent tone cried out loudly and caught your attention. The man was moving far faster than he should have been able to, adrenaline, and the critical need to stay alive kept him moving. And he had a heavy head start on just about everyone. So far, the spirits had appeared to move like normal humans. The first natural, gut reaction that you had was to lash out, the ground immediately rising into a wall in front of him. Head first he ran into it, with no time to hit the brakes and bring himself to a stop. How he wasn't knocked out cold was beyond you, but it was enough for others to catch up to him.
“Well, buttermilk pancakes, look at that.” Buckman was by your side seemingly out of nowhere, letting out a low whistle. It had been a long time since you had heard anyone even slightly impressed with your abilities. A twinge of pride swelled in your chest. “That's a mighty fine trick ya got there.”
“Ain't the only trick up my sleeve.” The comment slipped a little more flirty than intended. The chuckle that came from the man was well worth any embarrassment.
“I think you are going to do just fine here, sweetheart.” That old southern twang that came through was pleasant to listen to, an emotion that came unbidden and unexpected. Trouble. The thought meant big damn trouble. You were too far into things now, though, to give up. Giving in was the only option. What was the use of living a long life if a little fun couldn't be had every once in a while? It wasn't like he was going to be around forever after all. Once they were able to fulfill the force keeping them here on this Earth, they would finally be allowed to rest.
“Planning on keeping me, sir?” A proper southern gentleman, even if he was a vengeful, cannibalistic spirit, instead of offering back anything vulgar or too untowards, he simply grinned and rested a hand against your lower back.
“Oh, ya ain't ever getting free, sweetheart.” The possessive note sent a shiver down your spine. Not in a bad way. It had been many years since you had ever felt a flick of danger mixed with desire like he was able to ignite. He would be gone eventually, but until then? There was nothing saying that you couldn't enjoy yourself and bring a hint more pleasure to his life.

Welcome to Lucid Dreaming 101
Whether you just want to trip out or hang with your f/o
Let's begin!
Tagging a few people who were curious @carpenter-synth @jayjayblogsthings @justalittletomato @tinalbion @immelyna-14-tb
It's simple but complicated
FIRST OF ALL
There's really no wrong way to lucid dream, but here are a few pointers
Myth: Am i supposed to lay on my back to lucid dream?
I mean you can if that's how you sleep weirdo
I'm kidding you're doing great
Now then
Get yourself in a good headspace. Nothing matters in the world when your head hits that pillow.
Wash your face, brush your teeth, take your meds. Do your nightly routine for a better result. Clean mind, clean dream-space. If you like listening to music while you sleep go for it. Legit whatever you feel is comfortable.
Scripts and Such
A script is legit what it sounds like. Write down everything you want to happen in your dream, who you are, characters you want to interact with.
Myth: Could i die in my dreams?
No! What is this, elm street? Nah
You are and will be in control of everything happening
Speaking of Scripts
Write down everything that happens in your dreams. Keep a journal, a log, the notes app on your phone.
It'll help greatly with future dreams and art/fics.
Myth: Am I going to enter sleep paralysis if I screw up?
No!
Sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming are completely different circumstances. That includes the hat man
Unless you want the hat man to appear I'm looking at you monster fuckers
Tumblr media
Moving on.
Focus!
Now Breathe
If you can visually depict what you want to happen in your mind, then that works greatly too!
I think I've covered everything
Keep that journal/notes app close. The more you write down dreams, the more you'll remember them.
And it's okay if you don't some times. Happens to me during stressful/rushed mornings
Sweet dreams and best of luck!

Arthur Morgan x GN!Reader
Rating: None
Length: 2.1k
Tumblr media
Asked by: @photo1030
Ooo! Random thought, maybe can link to my last request. Reader (or character, your choice) gets hurt and Arthur has to take care of them. Maybe shot in the leg and he has to carry them. They get to see a softer side to him, being all caretaker and protective.
Protective Arthur is just... *chef's kiss* I can't explain it but seeing him so good with a gun, being able to down someone within seconds then to turn around and be so gentle with you?? I need it, crave it, even. Thanks for the ask, hon!~
*
It was supposed to be a simple bank coach robbery, just a quick in-and-out sort of situation, and you insisted that you go along to assist Mary-Beth and Sean, but with Arthur being as worried as he always was, he felt it was best to tag along and make sure Sean didn’t pull you into any other mischief. The Irishman, of course, took offense to that, but he didn’t exactly mind that you two wanted to tag along. The more the merrier, even if the cut of the pay was less.
As much as Arthur tried to insist you remain back, you were headstrong and refused to let him tell you what you were capable of. You’d had a successful string of heists you were able to pull off with the other gang members, so why would this one be any different? Without much argument afterward, you rode off on your horse behind Sean and Mary-Beth, and a disgruntled Arthur followed you all from the rear.
It was difficult to put into words how this made Arthur feel, but he knew that going along to assist would have eased his discomfort, and hearing Sean’s plan to distract the coach was more than entertainment in itself. But with Sean being inept with firearms, Arthur had ridden alongside your horse to listen in on the plan.
Mary-Beth was more than excited to get out of the camp and put her talent to good use, and even more so when you had offered to tag along if they wouldn’t mind. Oh, this is excitin’!” She exclaimed with a large smile on her face. “Easy enough to flag ‘em down, I think.”
Sean was proud of his idea and felt that he should have had more credit, but Arthur, being who he was, was unsure and unimpressed with Sean’s usefulness when it came to stressful situations.
“I’m just keepin’ an eye on you, MacGuire, I know they’re solid,” he stated matter-of-factly as his horse trotted along to the speed of Ennis.
“Alright, alright, you get knocked out on a mission one time-”
“More than once,” Arthur corrected.
The Irishman just scoffed and shook his head. “Look, you can write about it in your journals, but let’s get back to my job, the one I brought y’all in on!” He huffed.
You couldn’t help but laugh at how much those two men were always at each other’s throats, no matter what the other was doing. “Let’s focus, gentleman, the lady and I will have this done lickety-split, it’ll be a cakewalk.” You looked over at Arthur with confidence shining in your eyes, and you thought you caught a glimpse of a smile from across his face, but it was gone before you could blink.
Sean led the way until they came to a crossroads, then he told you all to keep the horses out of sight as he scoped out where they could hide for the time being. “Alright then, here we are, they’ll be comin’ from the North any minute, you both know what you’re doin’, right?”
Arthur just scoffed and shook his head. “Course they know what they’re doin’,” he replied gruffly.
You jumped down from your horse and patted its muzzle gently. “Mary-Beth is gonna run out and flag ‘em down, I’ll be off a ways to scope out the guards, and you two will be behind the log. Sean will ring off some shots, and Arthur will come in and clean up while I pick ‘em off from behind. Easy.”
Sean looked satisfied with that response and nodded. “Alright, perfect! Now, Morgan, let’s go and get behind this log, you-” he pointed in your direction, “-get over to those trees and don’t be spotted. Mary-Beth, get ready.”
The redhead felt proud of this plan, he was sure everything would work out, and he had the details down to a T. Everything went fine until it didn’t.
Instead of spooking the guards to throw them off, Sean took aim after hearing the way one of the men spoke to Mary-Beth and scoped him from his spot behind the log. Arthur immediately began to fire, albeit reluctantly since Sean was deviating from the initial plan. He hadn’t caught sight of you yet, but he figured you were doing alright for yourself. Then suddenly, a man lunged for Mary-Beth and held a gun to her head, his arm clenched around her throat.
“Let GO of me!” She snapped, trying her best to claw at his arm.
“Got your little lady friend here! Drop your guns!”
Arthur removed his rolling block rifle and watched the man hide himself behind the woman through the scope. “Dammit, he keeps movin’, don’t got a clear shot.”
“I got it!” You suddenly yelled out, and before you had a chance to line up the shot, the man had heard you and took aim. The shot rang out and the bullet penetrated your upper thigh.
Your scream echoed out and Arthur finally had a clear shot to take the man down for good. “Sean, get Mary-Beth! I got them!” He said as he threw the gun over his shoulder and took off running where you’d fallen to the ground. “Shit, shit, shit,” he mumbled to himself as he finally caught up to you.
You were trying your best to hold onto your leg the best you could to apply pressure, but it didn’t help much, you couldn’t stifle the scream you released when it hurt a little too much. “Shit, guess I messed that up badly…”
“Nah, you didn’t, lemme see,” Arthur said as he moved your hands, checking out where the wound was. “Ah, right through the meat of the leg but just missed your femoral artery. You’ll be alright, just gotta treat it when we get to camp. C’mon, it ain’t gonna feel pretty.”
Arthur grabbed his bandana and tied it around your leg the best he could to keep pressure, then he scooped you into his arms and carried you back to his horse.
Sean and Mary-Beth had cleaned out the coach and the dead men’s pockets as he took care of you, but Mary-Beth felt awful. “Are they gonna be alright?” She asked, her tone laced with worry.
He just nodded and helped you as carefully as he could onto his horse, but the discomfort was a lot, yet you remained as strong as you could and held onto the horn of the saddle. “Call my horse, please…” You whimpered. “Can’t leave ‘em here…”
“You worry ‘bout yourself, your horse’ll be fine,” the gunslinger assured you as he hopped on behind you. “It’s gonna hurt with the ride but the faster we get back the better. Y’all go on, we’ll split the money when we meet back, don’t let anyone follow you.”
“Sir, yes sir,” Sean said with a meek smile, feeling awful you’d been hurt. “Take care of ‘em, will ya?”
Arthur nodded in response, whistled for your horse to follow, and rode off as quickly as he could. The ride was definitely painful, but you managed to hold out long enough until you got back to camp, where Arthur had taken you to your tent, which thankfully had some privacy. He left you alone for all of two minutes when he came back with all the necessities he needed to fix you up proper.
You lay there on your cot, and as you tried to look up at him to speak, all you could do was groan in pain until he placed his hand gently on the back of your neck, having you sit up slightly. “Here, take a shot of whiskey, it’ll help a bit. I gotta dig the bullet out and cauterize the wound.”
After hearing all that and swallowing the burning liquid, your consciousness was in and out, very hazy, until you saw black and just heard the sound of Arthur’s voice.
Hours later, you awoke with a dry hoarseness in your throat, your eyes blinked rapidly to adjust to the low lamplight that had been inside your tent, and you looked up to see Arthur beside your cot. He already reached for the deerskin and placed it to your lips. You drank greedily at the water until you felt satisfied enough to pull away, coughing from the coldness.
“There you are,” Arthur greeted softly, removing the deerskin from your grasp. “You’re gonna be fine, just gotta stay off the leg for a while,” he commented. “You feelin’ alright?” He leaned over and dunked a cloth into a bucket of water, then wring it out, and placed it gently over your forehead.
You looked over at him and smiled softly. “Didn’t know you were so caring,” you joked softly, chuckling to yourself.
Arthur waved his hand dismissively and scoffed. “Had my fair share of bullets is all, makin’ sure you don’t pull a stunt like that again, you hear?”
You nodded and a small smile crept across your face, you couldn’t help but stare up at him and admire the man. He acted as if he didn’t care much about others, that he wasn’t any better than a stone-cold killer, but here he was worrying about you and taking care of you. Usually, it was left up to one of the women who were more well-versed in bedside manner, like Miss Grimshaw, but Arthur had insisted on your behalf. Naturally, he didn’t tell you this, it was Mary-Beth who informed you when she came in to visit while Arthur had gone to refill the bucket and grab some more medical supplies from Strauss’s wagon.
“Oh it’s been real sweet, he ain’t left unless he needed to get somethin’ for you,” Mary-Beth beamed. “Almost like somethin’ straight out of one of my books, he’s been real particular, too.”
“Of what?” You questioned.
“He hasn’t let anyone other than me and Tilly into your tent, even was on edge when Charles offered to help.”
This information made your cheeks feel warm, he was practically babying you back to health, you’d never seen this side of him before. “Wow, I would have never expected Arthur Morgan to be at my bed-side,” you teased as you looked up at the young woman.
She nodded, still all smiles. “Well, I hear him comin’ so that’s my cue, better leave you to it or else he’ll kick me out,” she joked and stood up from the chair. “You feel better, and holler if you need anythin’ from us.”
“Thanks, Mary-Beth.”
She nodded her head and left the tent, then was quickly replaced by Arthur, who set the bucket down beside his chair and had a bowl of stew in the other hand. “You think you can eat yet?”
You hummed in response and wet your dry lips with your tongue. “I can try if it’ll make you feel better.”
“It would, now here,” he offered as he slowly placed his hand beneath your shoulders, giving you a little push to help you sit up.
“Heard you’ve been fussin’ over me since we got back, that true?”
Arthur sighed, knowing damn well Mary-Beth was going to say something to you at some point. “It ain’t a big deal, no big drama,” he waved it off. “Just makin’ sure you’re gonna be okay, which you are, by the way.” He held the bowl until you were ready to take it and try to feed yourself, but still leaned forward in case he needed to grab it from you. “Just rest up and you’ll be right as rain soon enough.” You grabbed the bowl and smiled over at Arthur, the adoration in your eyes quite apparent. “Arthur… thank you, I know you’re gonna think it’s no big deal, but it is to me. Couldn’t have made it without you,” you remarked. “I owe you-”
“You don’t owe me nothin’, well, except maybe one thing.”
Your head perked up and you offered him a smile. “Anything.”
With that, his mouth curled into a wide smile, thoughts running through his head as if he could have said so many things, but those thoughts would be shared later. For now, he figured he should settle on the obvious. “Promise me next time you ain’t gonna go runnin’ with MacGuire, you need a job done, you ask me.” He sat back in the chair and offered a lopsided grin.
Thankfully you didn’t bring the spoon up to your mouth; you’d laughed and almost dropped the bowl. “Sure thing, Arthur, anything for you.” Your eyes locked with his and you couldn’t help but feel like you owed him more than that, but for now, you owed him to get better and listen for once. You’d show him how grateful you were when you could use your leg again.
“Hey, Arthur?”
“Hmm?”
“Thanks again,” you said softly.
The man just chuckled and lit up a cigarette after getting your permission. “Anytime, sweetheart.”

As you stared at your form in the mirror, you had no idea it would come down to this.
Your eyes seemed sunken from the lack of sleep, and it wasn’t always like this in your house, but sleepless nights were now becoming the norm for you. You wiped away the funny feeling from your eyes and let out a sigh, knowing very well that there would be consequences later on. You had just slammed your door shut as you screamed out at your family on the lower level of the house, the air was now still and tense, and that’s when you braced yourself.
Your father would try to be the voice of reason while your stepmother would see red. She hated you from day one, you couldn’t ever figure out why, but lately, you had been making it painfully aware you didn’t like her attitude toward you, which led to tonight’s outburst. But you didn’t hear those familiar footsteps coming up the stairs, you were met with silence. Your muscles relax as the moments ticked on by and felt you were safe enough to change into your sleep clothes and crawl into bed, you were too afraid to emerge from your room in case hell would rain down upon you, so you opted for snuggling beneath the blankets. Moving back home was a mistake you regretted every moment you were here, but what else could you do? The comfort of home after losing what you had seemed like a comforting idea at the time, but now, it was a waking nightmare.
You were not able to hear the whispers across the house, speaking ill of you in hushed tones as your father fought for you as he always did.
‘She’s my daughter, whether you like it or not,’ he’d say.
‘And I wish she’d never been here, I wish she’d be taken away from my home.’
‘OUR home, and you can be so cruel to her, leave her be.’
‘I wish she’d get what's coming to her with that smart mouth.’
‘Stop. Now.’
But your stepmother hadn’t said those words, not just yet, she’d whisper them into the darkness when she was alone, where she knew the voices would be whispering to one another, where the dozens and dozens of eyes would catch in the dim light of the moon as she spoke the words bitterly: ‘I wish the goblins would come and take that girl away from us, take her away so we could be happy.’
When you awoke to a slight chill in the air and a bright light in your eyes, you sat up amongst a tended bed of flowers, not blankets of your own that gave you warmth and comfort, and that’s when you felt the first pang of panic jolt through your body. You had no idea where you were, some sort of bare garden with a sky that seemed to be on fire and clouded.
You found out you were in a labyrinth, the tall hedges covered so far out that it turned to stone further out, your eyes widened as you stood high on a nearby fountain to see where it was you were. You didn’t hear the footsteps that neared you from the stairs behind you, but you felt the energy in the air shift, so you whipped your head around to see a tall, slender figure. He was beautiful, terrifying, and mysterious. You wanted to look away so as to not seem rude but your eyes refused to move, instead he stared down at you as he eyed you carefully.
"Wh-where am I?" A natural question to ask, but right after speaking, you felt almost ashamed.
"You're in my Labyrinth, little one." The man's voice was low, soft, and soothing.
You stood there and looked down at your feet, still wearing your socks with little designs on them. "Am I dreaming this?"
A small smile pulled at the corner of his mouth. "Would you prefer if this was a dream?" Was he toying with you or did he truly mean to question your thought process due to curiosity? He seemed almost familiar with you as if he'd known you'd be coming and he was waiting for you to come inside.
You took a cautious step closer and could make out more of his features, like how his eyes seemed to take on a shape and color of their own. He seemed otherworldly as he stood tall, his slender form seemed to tower over you while you remained unsure of your fate.
"I'm not sure," you finally responded. "But… what am I doing here, in your labyrinth?"
Your face didn't quite give the whole story much like everyone else that had been wished into his domain, you weren't a bratty toddler, nor were you a vile creature, you were just simply…you. The confusion, sadness, and pain you felt as you stood before him made him falter, it made him rethink his course of action. Especially when those who wished you away wanted nothing to do with trying to win you back before the clock struck the thirteenth hour.
He didn't have the heart to voice it, but Jareth felt sorry for you.
And that's how you came to live there in his labyrinth for some time, and though most of the goblins had wanted you turned into one of them as was usually intended to be done, Jareth refused to give you that 'gift', instead, he had you become his apprentice.
What had felt like days was actually weeks had gone by, and you grew comfortable in your new place among the goblins and other weird creatures that surrounded the labyrinth and its walls. You had picked up things here and there, but you didn't learn much when it came to the castle and its workings, that was something that was only left for Jareth's future heir, he'd tell you.
'You shouldn't worry your pretty little head about any of that,' he'd muse with a small grin.
No matter how much you asked and begged to learn, he wouldn't burden you with such things just yet, so he found other ways to concern yourself with. But you did take much notice of him, the Goblin King. He hadn't given you much to think about in regards to his past, more did he disclose much in general, but he always intrigued you to the point that you'd ask him randomly given questions throughout the day.
"How long have you been king here?"
"Long enough."
His answers were short and simple, which you expected from someone who looked like he didn’t have much patience, but you never really found that out. Not until much later on.
You don’t know how long you were there in the Goblin City, working around the castle to earn your keep, but you were thankful he took pity on you. You lived a lavish life and really didn’t have to worry about the difficulty of life, college, or a job. But you missed those things that made life, well, life. So Jareth had you become his assistant and would help him with tasks that required a more steady hand when he couldn’t leave it up to one of the goblins. They didn’t resent you for it, they actually seemed rather relieved that you ended up taking over for them, it gave them much more time to go about their daily shenanigans.
Of course, you didn’t question it and you proceeded to do as Jareth wished of you. Your head was so far in the clouds one day that you didn’t seem to notice just how much you began to stare at him as he sat upon his throne and spoke to one of his loyal subjects. You admired not just his good looks but also the little acts of kindness he granted you since you first arrived.
You were merely an unwanted stray that was cast out by your own family though he couldn’t pinpoint exactly why they’d done it, more and more he found himself staring at you as well. Studying the way your face would easily show your emotions unlike his own, where he shied away from allowing himself to be so easily read, you stood there before him and weren’t afraid of him. You told him like it was when he did something rather displeasing, and he was almost thankful for your nature, it clashed with him in the best way.
It was another morning in the castle when he awoke incredibly early, his mind wracked with nightmares that tended to happen on occasion, his past coming back to haunt him. He sought out comfort for so long and couldn’t find it, not until you were here, and he had thought of it for a mere second until he was scolding himself for it.
‘You shouldn’t, it’s out of the question and you know it,’ he’d convince himself. But as he walked along those long empty halls, the door that sat at the end had called to him, and Stars, he wanted to walk in and take what he wanted so badly, wanting to know if you’d ever give it freely.
Jareth couldn’t help himself as he ended up standing outside of your door, knowing very well that you would be asleep, so he pushed it open gently and watched you with intense curiosity. He hadn’t done this before, he shouldn’t be doing it now, watching you at your most vulnerable moment. But something about your face and how soft it seemed with your eyes closed, your breathing gentle as your chest rose and fell. He hadn’t allowed himself to feel this comfort in a very long time, he couldn’t remember the last time he did. But seeing you here now, looking like a beautifully carved angelic being before him, it was eating away at him.
He didn’t realize that he stepped closer, and he could hear the gentle intake of breath as he rounded the soft material that surrounded your bed, and he could easily see your sleeping form through the fabric of the canopy that surrounded your bed. Jareth watched you intently while he seemed to glide around your room, his hands touched the curtains and made them flow behind his touch. He wasn’t sure what prompted him to walk into your room and watch you sleeping peacefully, all he knew was he felt tranquil as he stood there gazing down upon you, and whenever you moved ever so slightly beneath the sheets, it amazed him how your face would have such soft expressions.
It was then he knew he was falling for you in a way he didn’t think was possible.
You hadn’t known he was there the first time watching you sleep, but ever since that night, you awoke feeling strange and you couldn’t place why. While you scavenged for food in the kitchens, you avoided Jareth all morning successfully because you needed to get your head in order.
Why were you thinking of him like that? He took pity on you, he took you in and gave you shelter and a means to earn your keep, nothing more. He never gave you that feeling of feigned romance, so why did you want to look at him as if he were one of the most beautiful beings to ever exist? You wanted to worship him and just be lucky to be in the same room as him, and thinking of him only made you forget about your food and made your heart beat faster. How would you be able to look at him after this?
And as if on cue, one of the Goblins had walked into the kitchen and announced that the king had wanted to see you, so you finished off your breakfast and tentatively made your way to the throne room. The mere thought of looking upon him excited you and frightened you, especially since you wouldn’t know how to carry yourself around him.
You stepped inside and saw him there speaking with another, but once his eyes looked up to meet yours, you froze and felt as if your breath was taken from you, and you felt a jolt that traveled through your body as his eyes remained locked on yours.
Jareth stood swiftly and continued to stare at you, the Goblin speaking was interrupted and he looked startled by his king’s sudden movements. “Gabs, leave us,” he demanded as his hand waved him away.
Gabs listened and immediately ran from the throne room, scurrying as quickly as he could.
“I’m sorry to interrupt,” you began, “I was told you were looking for me.”
“Yes…” He trailed off and continued to stare, but it wasn’t until a moment later that he spoke again. “I want to know if you were sent here with intentions other than being sent away from your family.”
“Wh-what?”
“I ask for so little from you, Y/N, and right now I am asking if you are a spy, or even perhaps a witch sent to entrap me, to steal my kingdom.” He began to circle you as you stood there before him, greeting that familiar sensation of fear you once felt when you first arrived.
“No, I told you, I was asleep in my bed in my house, and I woke up here, I remember nothing other than that. I swear to you, my liege.”
Jareth stopped in front of you and continued to look at you, knowing very well your emotions would betray you, and he saw nothing but that look of fear. He stepped away, not wanting to mar your beautiful face with such sorrow, and he tried to seem less imposing as he stood there, unsure of how to proceed.
“I believe you,” he finally breathed and hung his head for a moment. “Only it doesn’t explain the way I’ve been feeling as of late, little one. How can you explain the way my chest feels whenever you’re around me? Or how my flesh is bristling with gooseflesh whenever I catch your gaze with mine? I don’t understand what sort of spell you’ve suddenly cast upon me but I am growing exhausted trying to figure it out.”
Your stomach dropped as you stood in shock, Jareth completely unaware that you were feeling the exact same way about him, it was eerie how it was almost a sort of connection you must have both experienced. You began to laugh quietly, Jareth’s head whipped around to see why it was that you’d begin laughing at him.
“I don’t believe it,” you breathed as you wiped away the tears that spilled from your laughter.
“Believe what, exactly?”
You gazed into his unique eyes and smiled sweetly. “You and I have been experiencing the same exact feeling for one another because I’ve been wondering the same as of late… and I think I have the answer, but I don’t know how you’ll feel about it…”
“You can’t be thinking…” His words once again trailed off, not thinking it was even possible to feel such emotions anymore. A small smile played at his glossed lips and his hand reached out for you, his thumb gently stroking the side of your cheek down to your chin. “It can’t be…”
As you bit your lip, you nodded once and sighed. “I think it is, Jareth.”
You swore you almost saw his shutter at the mere mention of his name, but the look in his eyes as his face inched slowly toward you was a sight you only dreamt of. Upon instinct, your eyes closed and you leaned forward, wondering if he’d reject you, but you looked so eager that he met your lips with his just as fervently. Your mind was hazy as you tried your best to think, but nothing else mattered as the taste of his lips or the scent of him overtook your senses. Without warning, his hands pulled you in deeper into his embrace, a gloved hand entangled in your hair while another slid carefully down from your neck to your arm.
Not wanting to pull away, you urged yourself forward and your entire body shuttered when his hand grasped your waist, but you didn’t dare stop now, though as soon as you had committed yourself to this, Jareth pulled away from you. He sighed heavily and looked as if he didn’t know what to say next, truly a feat you never thought possible: rendering the Goblin King speechless, even if for a moment.

It was late at night, the only lights coming from the moon, the truck's headlights and a little lamp inside the truck. You were sitting in the passenger seat on a long stretch of highway, heading home after going on a drive about with Rusty.
A comfortable silence was in the air when a few moments later your body shivered. Looking around for the blanket that was usually kept in the truck, which had mysteriously disappeared. So instead you pulled your legs up to your chest, wrapping your arms around them to try and keep warm. Rusty noticed this "you alright darlin?"
"Yeah I'm fine, just a little cold that's all" with a small smile on your face you shrugged your shoulders a little.
He looks you over for a few seconds before a smirk spreads across his face "it is cold isn't it? Why don't you come sit on daddy's lap and to keep us both warm baby."
Your eyes immediately wandered down to his crotch for a split second before bringing them back up. You could feel your cheeks grow warm as you moved to straddle his lap. There wasn't anybody else on the road, there hardly ever was on this patch. He placed quick little kisses on your neck before saying "why don't ya get yourself ready for me darlin."
You were already a little wet just by his voice. Luckily you were wearing a skirt. It wouldn't take that much to bring you to where you needed to be. When you were practically dripping from rubbing yourself and Rusty's dirty talk, you unbuckled his belt and undid his jeans to free his semi hard erection. You lower yourself onto him letting out a noise of pleasure feeling him inside you.
"Now you be a good girl and stay still until we get home." Rusty kisses your forehead as you put your head on his chest, wrapping your arms around him underneath his jacket.
Some time later you slowly begin to roll your hips letting out a soft moan. Rusty let out a low groan before grabbing your waist with one hand. "Ah ah pretty girl you're just supposed to be warming my cock not fully getting it hard."
"I'm sorry daddy" looking up at him with puppy dog eyes "you just feel so good inside me" you say with a big smile.
He lets out a chuckle "aww you're very precious pumpkin, I've hardly done anything and yet here you are all worked up."
You lean forward to put kisses along his jawline.
"Hmm, baby I'm sure you can wait until we get home not that long left." Reaching down to grab your throat squeezing lightly looking you right in the eyes "otherwise I might just have to punish you if you can't follow orders"
"I'll try daddy"
"That's my good girl"

Pen Pals(Veneer X OC)Chapter 7
Author’s Note: This would have been posted earlier but with the storms my power went out for a few hours. I had attempted to drive my friend home and a tree had fallen down near her home, knocking the power lines down. We turned around immediately and went back to my home. Stay safe and stay warm out there! I want to give thanks to my bestie and beta reader, @tinalbion <3

Veneer settled in the chair across the table. The atmosphere was uncomfortable, and his brain kept telling him that he wanted to run away from the situation. He could feel Avery’s eyes staring at him, and it didn’t make him feel any better. When he shifted in his chair and made himself as comfortable as he could in this type of situation, he looked up and read Avery’s grim expression. Her face was that of disapproval. He knew this wouldn’t work out. None of it would.
“So yeah…I guess you know who I am then if you’re looking at me like that…” He drummed his fingers nervously into his lap. “And I guess you’re not very happy about it.”
Avery couldn’t believe it. Veneer couldn’t recognize her? Of course he wouldn’t…Why would he memorize a single fan over the thousands he had back then? Had Avery been the same as she was before that night, then maybe she would feel more disappointed than she felt right now. But also…Veneer was a fraud and had scammed everyone. He had fooled everyone in Mount Rageous along with his sister into believing that they could sing because of a Troll they very nearly killed in the process. Avery remembered seeing the speech where Veneer had exposed themselves at their own concert, but also remembered that she was at work that night and didn’t care too much about what happened to the two.
“Yeah, uh…I remember who you are. I’m just a little speechless seeing you right now. You’re not a Samson. You’re Veneer, ex superstar. This isn’t a joke, is it?”
Veneer raised his hands defensively. “No! No! I swear. I’m Samson. I just used a pseudonym so I wouldn’t be rejected because of my name…But I regret it so much.” He rambled, “I didn’t lie about anything else, just my name. I swear it, Avery.” He held a hand over his chest.
He still couldn’t tell who she was.
“So everything else you told me was real?” Avery questioned suspiciously, unsure if she should believe him. “Every single thing that you sent me in those letters was absolutely one hundred percent true?”
Veneer nodded. “Yeah…So the interest in fashion, the sketchbooks, doing good here…That’s all real. I made a huge mistake listening to my sister and I’ve been working really hard to right the wrongs I committed against Mount Rageous. I’ve been learning a lot here, and Dr. Graham thought it would be good for me to join the Pen Pal Program to help me get back into the real world. I fell in love talking to you, and the last thing I’ve ever wanted to do was disappoint you. That’s why I wanted to confront you in person and let you see me before I told you my real name. I was feeling really guilty about using a fake name in the first place. I hope you can give me a chance, Avery…I have been loving to get to know someone as a person again and be myself…” He rubbed his hand.
Avery saw the remorse on his face and how truly he meant these words as he said them. If he was a man of lies, he wouldn’t have exposed himself and his sister to the world and would keep manipulating people. She thought hard and realized that she…she didn’t feel manipulated at all. Sure, she would have loved to know the person she had been talking to in the first place, but she understood why he had done what he did. She knew that if she saw she was writing to Veneer in the first place, then she probably wouldn’t have given him the second chance he had been craving. He didn’t deserve that.
“...I think I still need a moment to process this…” Avery pressed her fingers against her temples. “But I can see why you didn’t tell me right away. It must be scary being on the other side of things.” She slowly began to unwrap the food she had brought for the two of them, Veneer watching her closely. “I think I would do the same thing if I were in your shoes. I want to give you—Veneer—a chance, but you have to promise me that you’ve got to tell me things from now on. I fell in love with talking to Samson too, not because of his name but his personality and actions. Samson is you, and I think that maybe you do deserve a chance.” She slid the sandwich over to Veneer and smiled warmly at him. “But I don’t want to be lied to anymore. OK?”
Veneer couldn’t believe his ears. Avery…Avery didn’t reject him! He gratefully took a bite out of his sandwich, which tasted a little like freedom, making him want to cry. “I really appreciate that, Avery…More than you think.”
“Can…Can I ask you something though? If you don’t mind?”
Veneer nodded. “Yeah, you can ask me anything. I think I owe that to you at least.”
“You probably don’t but…do you recognize me? We met a while back when you were—uh famous? I was at one of your concerts at the Boom Box and I met you personally when I caught your t-shirt in the crowd. You had been so nice to me, and that’s why I really admired you. You always seemed nicer than your sister. I can see why you’re doing so well here.”
Veneer blinked once and then twice. He took a long look at her face before he noticed the features and realized they had been familiar. “Oh yeah! I remember you…But I had never caught your name. I remember looking out in the hallway for you but you had already gone…You never sent me those pictures, though.” He slowly ate at the chips Avery brought him. He got chips here, but it was the cheap healthy kind.
Avery nodded solemnly, trying to push those memories out of her mind. “Yeah, I had accidentally forgotten my phone when I took a last trip to the bar. I think someone stole it. It was long gone when I went back to look for it.” Avery felt a small pang of guilt. She was technically lying to Veneer, as if she hadn’t just made him promise to never lie to her again. Then again, she didn’t want to get in trouble with Rivers if a little rumor about her lip syncing made its way around. She knew that the fraud would come after her first and she dreaded having to deal with her again. Maybe that’s also why she was okay with jumping on and taking another chance with Veneer, too…It’s not like she was perfect either.
“Are you alright?” Veneer waved a hand in front of her face, snapping her out of her thoughts. “You look like you’re far away in thought right now.”
Avery nodded. “Yeah, a lot happened that night and I wish I hadn’t lost my phone.” She smiled, but it was a sad smile. “Otherwise I would have sent you those photos. Despite what happened with you and Velvet—I think we looked cute in those.”
Veneer blushed. “How do you…feel about all of that? Knowing what I did?”
“I wouldn’t say I was exactly happy. I did spend a lot of money going to those concerts.” As she said those words, she hated the sad expression that came across Veneer’s face, even if what she said needed to be brought up, “But there had been a huge refund to everyone who had proof of old concert tickets, and I eventually got mine. I’m just glad that you owned up to your mistake, even if it was a huge one. You said your sister was here with you, didn’t you? Velvet’s here in this facility?”
“Uh huh.” Veneer groaned and leaned back in his chair, his arms crossed, “And she drives me absolutely INSANE, I’ll be honest. She was really bad coming here at first. She destroyed stuff, and made others feel like crap, me included. She was a full-on entitled brat. I was totally embarrassed to be her twin, especially since I’m basically the female equivalent of her. We’re the total opposites.”
“What’s she up to now?” Avery leaned back in her chair, comfortable though wishing they were sitting in bean bags right now. That would be peak comfort. “Has she been behaving better than when you guys were first sent here?”
“Actually, yeah. But I can’t tell if it’s an act or not. She pretty much forced me to be in on her therapy appointments with my counselor by saying she’d only do it if I was there. It’s been not fun lately.” Avery noticed as his hands made silly gestures as he talked, pretty much expressive with his body as he spoke, “And now she’s in Anger Management class. But I think she’s doing better at least. She doesn’t yell as much as she used to.”
Avery had no clue Velvet would be acting the way she was. There was a pang of empathy in her chest, and she felt for the male even more. He probably dealt with a lot with himself alone, but also to carry the burdens of his sister. That sounded like a lot…
“Well, I hope that you’re putting yourself first.” Reaching across the table, she linked her fingers with Veneers. The male’s eyes widened and his cheeks blushed as he saw how perfectly their fingers linked together on the table. It had been a long time since he had felt a kind touch and this…It was perfect. He loved it. Secretly.
Veneer stuttered as he responded, “I, well, uh…I am. I’m trying at least. It gets hard some days, but my journal is my best friend. The one you got me! I draft my letters there and also my thoughts. It helps me collect myself so I can feel better.”
“That’s great, Veneer!” Avery cheered for him, her free hand raised confidently, “I should do the same thing. Sometimes it just gets hard. When I’m feeling things in the moment, I just get more frustrated and tear the pages out…”
“Have you tried to breathe first? I know those breathing exercises sound stupid and cheesy, but Dr. Graham tells me that they help regulate your nervous system, enough to calm down and think properly. Or even chewing on ice. When you’re calmed down, that’s when you should start writing your thoughts. It’s helped me a lot when I learned about that, especially at my lowest…What’s that…look for?” He saw how wide her eyes were on him.
“Not-Nothing!” Avery pulled both her hands away, waving them defensively as she did so, “Sorry I was just…amazed because I would have never thought of that. I’m just admiring you. That’s all. Sorry if it came off as rude.” She rubbed the back of her neck.
The two of them were blushing messes. Avery looked at Veneer first and smiled. “Speaking of journals…Did you bring your sketchbook, like promised?” She bounced excitedly, scooting closer to the table. The way she leaned both her hands on her cheeks and eyed him in wonder made Veneer aware of how really cute this woman was.
Veneer swallowed the lump in his throat. He reached beside him and picked his sketchbook up from next to his foot and put it on the table. He laid his hands on top of the cover of the sketchbook defensively. “I…I’ve been drawing a lot. It’s clothes, but also sometimes I go back and sketch the photos you sent to me. It really helps me feel better and it’s a great distraction for me here. I’m not the best—”
Avery interrupted him, “Are you KIDDING me?” She huffed, “I’ve seen your artwork before and I’m so in love with it. Every sketch just gets better and your passion is just blinding.” Avery smiled at him, reaching her hand back out to him, her palm facing up this time. Veneer blushed when his hand touched hers again, sending jitters down his spine. Avery led his hand away from the sketchbook, his other one opening to the first page, which he used to test out different supplies directly onto the paper. It helped him with the first-page perfectionism. He closed his hand around hers, holding her hand once again.
The two of them held hands as he flipped through the pages and explained each one. Avery started memorizing the sketches of clothes and imagined what they would look like on real-life models. The man clearly didn’t recognize his own skill or potential. She wished she could do something to help him realize that potential.
“Oh Veneer, these are so good! Can I see them closer?” She asked for his consent before she took the sketchbook into her hands, flipping back through the pages he had shown her. The smile on her face was infectious. “They’re amazing and it’s like I can actually see these being made.”
“Real…Really?” he asked and copied her smile, “I told you once, but I hope that somewhere will accept me into fashion school…I always loved picking the outfits for Velvet and me when we were famous, but I didn’t realize how much deeper it was than that.” He smiled and took the sketchbook when Avery gave it back.
“I think I should get you some colored pencils. These would look so much better with color.”
“Sometimes, I get to color them, but I don’t have my own colored pencils to take back to my cell. Depending on who’s out in the rec room, we’re not allowed to have sharp objects. So, if you could, I wouldn’t say no, but I won’t ask you.”
“Don’t worry, you don’t have to ask! Colored pencils can be cheap. I don’t mind getting you some.”
“I’ll draw you lots of things then.” Veneer grinned.
The door cracked open and Veneer’s guard poked his body in. There was a surge of fear in his stomach, thinking that their time together was up, until the guard said, “You have thirty more minutes, just to warn you.” Then he left.
Avery’s shoulders slumped. Had that much time passed already? “Damn…The time really flew by…I don’t want to go.”
“Trust me, girl, I want you to take me with you.” Veneer laughed nervously, “But I would rather not ruin this good streak I’ve been on. I get out faster that way.”
“How much longer do you have here? Is there any way to get out on good behavior?” Avery took the sandwich leftovers and put them into her back, wiping crumbs off her black shirt.
Veneer nodded. “Actually, yeah, but it can still take a bit. There’s a rule though: You have to have a home lined up for you before you. I…I haven’t heard from my parents, and I don’t blame them, so I’m not sure where I’ll go. I have some money, but not a lot. I could get a small apartment.”
As if there was a draft in the room, Avery shuddered. The night she had been kicked out by Rivers, it had been so cold. Avery couldn’t imagine Veneer leaving this place, cold and unsure of what to do. She didn’t want that to happen. So, there was an idea in her head: would it be weird to offer Veneer her own home? There she went again, thinking too far ahead. Veneer still had some things to prove to her before she could even think about letting him move in with her. So, she chose to not bring it up for now.
“Awh, well you’ll let me know if they contact you back, will you? I would hate for you to be stuck here just because you don’t have somewhere to go.”
“Yeah, I have maybe two months, especially if I don’t screw up. I don’t imagine that happening though. I just hope to hear back from my parents sometime soon…We’ve talked A LOT about me today though, I want to hear a bit about you before you have to go.”
“Well, I think it’s because I’ve already told you so much about me in the letters. I did bring these for you.” She smiled as she slid pictures of her babies across the table.
“Awe, the big hammies…Are these photos for me?”
“Yeah! To keep. I wish you could see them in real life though. They’re so cute and fluffy. When they beg for treats, they’re just adorable.”
“I can’t wait to sketch some of these photos. Did you bring any photos of the place you work at?”
Avery shook her head. “No, but I can’t bring some for next time…” She offered.
The two spent the rest of the time talking, laughing, and generally enjoying each other’s presence. For the first time in a long time, Veneer felt normal, and that things would be alright. That he would be able to make it out of the facility alive, and maybe even be happy. Thanks to Avery.
Veneer stood. “Hey, is it okay if I hug you?” He opened his arms, in case she wanted to. When she stood from her chair, he didn’t realize how short she really was. She only reached his chest as she stepped forward and hugged him. He wrapped his long arms around her, not wanting to let go of her for a single second. This visit far exceeded his expectations and he was glad he followed through and didn’t chicken out.
“Thanks for being my friend…” he whispered to Avery, his cheek pressed against her hair.
Avery smiled as she pulled away from him. Her hands were still wrapped around him, her hands resting against his sides. “And thank you for being my friend. I was wondering if maybe we can make a small arrangement—?”
“An arrangement? Like what?”
“Like…” Her nose wrinkled as she took a moment to think about it, “I still want to send letters, but I want to be able to SEE you and talk to you too. So, we send letters with art and pictures now and then, and maybe every week if we can, and then visit now and then?”
Oh, Veneer wanted to cry hearing that. “I would LOVE that, Avery. I think I can do it every week, as long as you can.” He smiled down at her, finally pulling away when the door opened again, showing the guard from earlier. Both of them felt disappointed and didn’t want to leave.
“Time’s up, kids. I hope the meeting went well.” He looked the two of them up and down, then stepped out of the way, allowing for them to step out, “Veneer, you first.”
Veneer stepped out and gave a final look at Avery, “Oh, and Avery…I just wanted to let you know…I want to pay you back, no matter what. I don’t care if they gave you all your money back, but I want to do it too. Mark my words, I’ll give you back everything…”
“Oh Veneer…”
Avery watched as the guard put his hand on Veneer’s shoulder and guided him away from the door. Avery poked her head out the door and watched as they turned the corner and out of sight. She didn’t know where to go, so she waited for someone to come fetch her. That same guard returned and guided her out the door. Stacie was still at the desk and read a magazine now, not giving the young woman a glance as she left.
Avery’s heart was pumping wildly, and there was adrenaline going through her. She took out her phone and her first instinct was to call Rivers. She shrugged that thought away and pulled up Gracie, texting her instead.
Girl! Something interesting just happened. Can I come to talk to you?
***
Veneer was taken back to his cell, where the guard led him back in. He was breathless as he dropped onto his bed, flopping onto his back. He stared up at the stripped mattress above him, his cheeks redder than tomatoes. He still memorized Avery’s scent. It was strange, but it wasn’t that he hated it. It was the smell of a floral presume covering up the scent of grease and pizza. He wished he could play the lunch over, not to change anything but to experience it for a second time. Avery was making him go through these feelings that he had never experienced before. Suddenly, he felt as though he needed to talk to someone—anyone. Maybe he could catch his sister at dinner.
Veneer had a few hours to kill before dinner, so he sat at his desk, looking through the latest magazine Avery had bought for him, just filled to the brim with inspiration as he sketched away, not realizing he was planning matching outfits for himself and her. As he looked at his sketches, he realized that yes—she was right. He needed more colors in his drawings! Maybe he wouldn’t feel so bad about letting Avery buy him the colored pencils as a gift, though wanted to make sure that she didn’t feel obligated to buy him anything ever.
Many thoughts circulated in his mind. He couldn’t believe that she had been the one who wanted to call and visit him now. Since they had met and probably felt more comfortable with each other, he wouldn’t hesitate to ask her if she wanted to join him on his supervised outing. It wasn’t required for her to be there, but he wanted to have the experience with her, and now he felt confident that she would say yes. With their next visit or call, he would ask her. Dr. Graham would be thrilled to hear the news, and he wondered if his sister would too, or if she would blow up at him. If her anger management classes were working correctly, then maybe he didn’t have much to worry about.
When it was closer to time for dinner, Veneer held onto the bars of the cell, waiting for the guard to come back up the hallway with the others to take them all the dinner. He leaned his head against the bars to angle himself and see down the hallway better, trying to catch a glimpse of the guard. Sure enough, he caught a glimpse and stepped back so he wouldn’t appear desperate to get out that day, even though he really was.
Veneer contained his excitement all the way to the cafeteria. He grabbed a tray of some sort of processed salisbury steak meal and scanned the room for his sister. He always looked toward the back at the window. His sister liked to sit there the most because she enjoyed looking out the window. It was her way of tasting freedom. She was alone, per usual, and he came to sit across from her.
Velvet barely glanced at him for five seconds, eating some cheesy mashed potatoes on her plate, hardly touching the obviously fake meat. “So, did you get rejected or not? Go on, tell me.”
Veneer squirmed excitedly and anxiously. He held his hands together, trying to contain the excitement to avoid getting his sister all flustered. “It actually…WENT REALLY WELL! Of course, Avery was very disappointed at first, but I think she warmed right up to me! She brought me these delicious sandwiches, and we talked the whole two hours though it didn’t really feel that long. She promised to stay in contact and try to visit me more.” He waited and watched his sister closely, ready but also not ready for whatever reaction she was about to display.
Velvet put her spork down and slowly looked up to her brother. At first, Veneer was unable to gauge her reaction and worried she was about to have a meltdown. Velvet instead glumly leaned on her fist, casting her eyes down at the table. “Is there a way…you can help me get to that point?”
Veneer was taken aback. “Point…? What point?’ he asked.
“That I can have someone to talk to as well. This dump is annoying and I don’t have anyone else but you to talk to.”
Blinking in shock, Veneer’s mouth hung ajar slightly. “I mean…Yeah, I can try. I got mine with good behavior.” He smiled fondly at his sister, watching as she pushed around the food on her plate as though she was trying to hide her true feelings. “But I know you’ll get there, Velvet. I’ll help you through it, I promise.” For the first time since they had been arrested, Veneer truly felt connected to his sister.
Finally, Velvet met his gaze. “Do you still want to watch Desperate Housewives with me after dinner?”
Veneer reached across the table and put his hand over his sister’s. “Of course! I love watching that with you, Velvet…”
The siblings shared the last few bites of their food together. Something felt different for the two of them that day, and it was a good and welcoming sensation.

For the fanfic ask game – D for TMOMD, F, and R? 💜
D: Is there a song or a playlist to associate with [insert fic]?
Oooh okay so I already gave one song for TMOMD but another one is Still Feel by Half.Alive. I found that song for the first time when I was working on the last chapter of The Man Of My Dreams and I have just forever tied them. Like for real give it a listen, read the lyrics as you do and think about Amber feeling lost and hopeless during the break.
F: Share a snippet from one of your favourite dialogue scenes you've written and explain why you're proud of it.
Love this one, I got long with it, so under a read more it goes.
---
He took the lead before I could. "Can I ask you a question?" An idea. A stupid idea, but I couldn't help it, I let myself smile wide. "You can ask, doesn't mean I'll answer."
His own smile widening, he laughed first, and I followed. We both laughed harder than we should have, God it was just a stupid call back to something he said to me one of the first times we were in the playroom together yet I was dying like it was the first joke I'd ever heard. It broke the ice. I had my hands on my knees, still shaking a little as the laughter started to die he said. "Nice call back."
I took another deep breath and stood up straight again, one hand pushing my hair back as I replied. "Thanks."
Another beat. He speaks, it sounds true and genuine. "I missed you."
"I really fucking missed you too." I said it without thinking, I meant it with every fiber of my being. I just didn't want to say it to him, yet anyway. I looked him over and I took a step to be closer to him as I said. "You can ask me a question if you do me a favor first."
"Anything." He said it quickly and easily and it made me smile, my fingers tangled together in front of my stomach that felt so sick and filled with emotion. This was it. The real test. I was scared but I had to.
I took a deep breath again and looked up into his eyes as I asked that burning question: "Say my name?"
"Amber." What? "Again." It surprised me when I said it and before I can question it he indulges me readily.
"Amber."
It has been far too long since I've heard my name said like that. I loved it, it was the best thing I've heard in ages, I took another step forward, I asked quieter, eyes looking into his. "Again?”
He took a step towards me, my fingers laced so tightly my knuckles were white and he chuckled slightly before saying it just right. "Amber."
Jesus fucking Christ the way he said it, he stretched the M lingering on it and rolled the R in the way only he knows how. My knees are a little weaker and I say so softly, almost pressed to him now. "It really is you, Freddy."
"It really is, Amber."
---
Okay! A lot I know! But this, was one of my fave things to write, one of my fave things I have ever written. After the two year break in TMOMD, Freddy and Amber getting back together and having this fucking sweet little moment, the start of them reuniting. I love the call back, putting it in a new context, the tenative nature of it all. A little soft, a little broken, a lot of things but very, very, them. I think I totally nailed just what I wanted it to be.
R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?
I have said it before and I will say it again. @tinalbion. Her writing inspo'd me to start writing and posting my stuff, without her I wouldn't be here doing what I do and you can allll thank her and should thank her too!
