god im really going to expose myself (again) as a Generic White Man Liker but... honestly it's terminal. i will not be recovering, so it's ok.

Anyways: Dom Co/bb. I really did start this blog to yell about in/cep/tion, and I think about him more than I should. I still have a whole massive post in my drafts that I never finished talking about how I think he'd be as a pred but the tl;dr is that I think he is just so soft. Like, the whole premise of the movie is more or less "traumatized guy tries to see his children again" and honestly isn't that the vibe of so many of our beloved blurbos.

Ime with fanfic, he tends to get characterized as either an asshole (which I don't get, he just... isn't one in the movie. emotionally constipated, sure, but not an on purpose asshole) or a himbo. I prefer the himbo more but in reality he has to be excellent at reading people and social cues, and is more just... Bad At Emotions.

He is just so delicate, at the core of it, that I think he would be an excellent safe pred. Very gentle, very kind, possessed by a violent father instinct that is perfect for preds. 10/10. I really should write a sequel to that borrower fic (I have a couple of assorted things, but I'd need to format them to fit a bit more logically as a story/chronological progression.)

Also if anyone is curious, pred headcanons below the cut. I'd have put more but... lmao I think this is pretty extensive.

Depends on when you get him. Pre movie, before Mal's death, he's shamelessly in love and recklessly exploring dreamshare. He's a bit snarkier, hasn't settled down as much. He enjoys when his prey squirms, but he doesn't really need it. It's a fun treat, feeling them wriggle around inside him, but it feels just as good to be pleasantly full, too.

He isn't the most talkative, but he enjoys interacting with his prey while they're inside of him. He'll hold conversations or pet at them as needed, usually until they drift off, at which point he'll occupy himself with something else.

His favorite snack is Mal, followed closely by Arthur (or both, if he can get them). There have been multiple cases, both in and out of dreamshare, where he couldn't help but indulge in a treat. Never in anything serious, though, and never if they're really distressed. He prefers his prey to be willing, primarily, and will let people go if they're really serious about it.

He prefers prey in dreamshare, where the feelings are so much more intense. He can feel every movement of his prey inside of him, their breathing, their heartbeat -- all enhanced thanks to the weird properties of dreams. He loves it, loves poking at his stomach and feeling them move and shift about. The people he dreams with, mostly Mal and Arthur, learn to tolerate how curious he gets.

If you catch him during the year or so after Mal's death but before the events of the movie, he's an extremely reluctant pred. He's feeling wildly guilty, and the comfort of having a tasty snack curled up inside him feels like something he doesn't deserve. Mal's shade haunts him, too, reminding him of something he can never have again.

He misses the familiar weight of Mal inside him, and has phantom tingles in his stomach, a phantom taste on his tongue when he sees her shade, photos of her. He buries that part of him that craves the feeling of something warm and alive in his belly and carries on.

If a prey managed to pry his mouth open or otherwise desperately needed to be swallowed, he would do so begrudgingly. They aren't food, but the whole process is far more perfunctory and detached than he'd normally be. He'd check on them, make sure they're okay, but would otherwise be rather quiet and introspective. Probably would spend time spinning his top, rather than talking. He wouldn't forget that they were there, but they wouldn't really be the focus of his attention.

Part of him still really enjoys having prey curled up inside of him. The weight, the movement... it's real and grounding. He knows how they feel in dreams, and how they feel when he's awake; on the very rare occasion when he has prey inside him (likely Arthur, forcing him to take the self-care), he can rest easy knowing that the world is real because the weight inside is too dulled for a dream.

All the jobs he takes during this time are serious and corporate, leaving no room for friendly nomming, even if he wanted to.

Post movie, he's a pretty kind, maybe a bit teasing as a pred. Less so than before, however. He doesn't much care for squirming; he doesn't mind it, but after spending so long on the run, he really just wants his prey to settle down so he can enjoy a full stomach in peace. Generally, he goes for one or two, but could probably stomach up to three if he really pressed himself (something he doesn't do as much as he used to when he was younger).

He's still big into tummy rubs and interacting with the person inside him. Casual talking, gentle strokes, banter; whatever they happen to fall into. Now, he's much more appreciative of the littler things that he'd missed on the run. He likes the confirmation that they're safe and calm, and he especially loves when his prey nods off inside of him. It's such a display of trust in him, and it's something he's missed quite a bit. He likes to feel like people can depend on him, and what says "I depend on you" more than napping inside of his belly?

He also tends to nap on a full stomach, because he's getting older and can't be bothered to keep working when his body keeps trying to get him to settle down and sleep. He always makes sure his prey is asleep first, though.

He doesn't really dreamshare anymore; he gave that life up for his kids and would never look back. As such, and since the jobs he'd done in the past year or two had all been corporate espionage, he doesn't find himself missing the difference between prey in the waking world and prey in dreamshare. He just doesn't really remember it vividly enough for that.

i’m once again putting on my silly little detective hat and giving my silly little theories

spoiler warning here! i’m gonna be bringing up stuff that happens later in the games :)

disclaimer that this is all for fun! if you have any theories i’d love to hear them but please be respectful :,)

so before we get started i think we should establish the relationships

i’ve included separate graphs below for ayano, cole and seth because they’re aware of/have a disliking for so many other characters that it makes the rest of it hard to read

it’s pretty obvious what the dynamics are but i wanna be thorough :) some are included on the main graph regardless but that’s only if there’s an explicit line of dialogue or action regarding another character that isn’t the classic “i don’t like them”

it’s gonna take a long time to go over the proof of every relationship , and i haven’t even finished the graph yet (i’m about 3/4 through reading up on every character on the wiki - this is what i’ve found so far) but i’m planning on properly compiling all of the information and sharing it once hush hush is released.

if you’ve played the demo you may have also noticed that i haven’t included some characters/relationships in hush hush, such as lil and her relationship with cassie, cassie and eli’s friendship or lotus and nimh’s interactions. that’s because personally ? i think the crush crush/blush blush timeline happens parallel to hush hush.

(last spoiler warning before we get into it)

i think this for a few reasons. in short: the game is either set after the protagonist of crush crush or q-piddy sacrifices themselves OR hush hush is set in a timeline where the guys in blush blush were never turned into animals and the girls in crush crush had their respective whatever “crushed”. i’m leaning toward the latter as in hush hush there’s no relation to anything to do with the other games. namely the dark one’s form, eli and iro’s ages and will’s belief in magic/fortunes.

there’s more to this and i’m willing to elaborate but i’m also trying to keep this short :,)

but let’s assume that for convenience, hush hush is in fact an alternate timeline. we then need to have a look at the order of the games (crush crush, blush blush, hush hush and cabin fever).

i’d say it would look something like this

“pray tell, why did you put blush blush first when it was released after crush crush” - i’m gonna argue that it came first.

from conversations with the girls and also the option of the zoo job in crush crush, we can deduce that

1) the marshmallow in blush blush had lost their job by this time (from the conversations with “boss” in bb we know that they’re not coming back any time soon)

2) that the presence of the manimals was already made

this is also the reason that i think the marshmallow in cc and in bb are two different people. and arguably for hush hush too but like . the game hasn’t come out, i don’t have a huge amount to work with yet :,)

some separate theories that i think are pretty interesting!

- bearverly was not another victim of the magic water. she was turned human thanks to a potion, not like the power of love in bb (see: her staying a bear at the kiss interval). she also maintains her bear like qualities and doesn’t become “fully human” at the lover level, so honestly ? i think bearverly is just a fluke . a little hee hee ha ha if you will

- the “language that you don’t understand” that dmitri speaks is spanish. (see: him and lotus calling each other hermano/a, his use of cariño and little bird, the voice actor’s resume showing he can portray spanish characters)

- nimh left the bookmark in the book that cashew finds and contacts the player with . i don’t know how to explain this without going down a rabbit (haha get it) hole. the tl;dr is that you get cashew’s conversation when you reach boyfriend w nimh, the book is found in the university library and i’m gonna make the argument that nimh is studying to be a p.a and isn’t actually one yet (the average age of a paid p.a is much older than 20, and he only volunteers) AND a lack of romantic experienced is mentioned by both nimh and the writer. hook line and sinker i hope ???

- crush crush/blush blush is set in the same universes as rick and morty and hazbin hotel/helluva boss. (see dialogue with fumi and seth respectively !)

also! some theories that i’m currently working on:

- what’s the time/dimension travel element in all of this? (honey, reece, fumi)

- what are the ‘sushi rolls’ on nina’s head because i can’t find anything ?? is it a design choice ?? is it something else ? idk man idk </3

- what’s the link between the goldfish that was killed in cole’s introduction and the other characters because i don’t believe it was a random goldfish . AND did cole actually kill the goldfish because i’m gonna level with u . he doesn’t seem very capable of murder when you cross-reference with his attempts on the other guys . but also i guess a goldfish is way easier ?? idk :,)

- is generica the ghost that alfie employed or is there another instance of a ghost being summoned from the realm of the dead?

- did volks and bearverly date? and that’s why they hate each other? what’s the story there :o

- who are THESE people

there’s a lot more instances of these but i chose the ones that have characters that are supposed to actually be people . some of these are p obvious (ayano for instance) but i’m not sure if any of these are just references i’m not getting ? i know that the hush hush kickstarter allowed for a self insert tier so this could be the case but lmk if you recognise any :)

finally , if you made it to the end of this post tysm for reading my word vomit. i have some more thoughts but i’d like to share those when i have things a bit more worked out :) likely when hush hush is out as i feel that’ll have a lot more answers

So about them TF animes

Had been thinking about TF villains and the sweet “pure evil” trope that I oh so love and what it means to humanize a villain.

Had a talk some time ago where my discussion partners basically said that pure evil versions of Megatron aren’t good and that a story about war should have more grey morality.

You know my opinion on the matter- I fucking love Megatron as a pure evil villain, I don’t care about his motives, I just wanna see him be evil and have fun :D

One thing I said is that the anime shows tend to not give the villains any real reason to be evil while the cartoons after G1 did, which led to the conclusion that the animes aren’t as good as the cartoons in regards to villain writing. 

Lemme make a counter argument to this:

NO. The TF anime villains are not worse than the cartoon villains. The anime villains tend to far more humanized than the cartoon villains!

Do the villains from japanese G1, Beast Wars II, RiD01 and the Unicron Trilogy have grey morality about them and any reasonable motive behind being evil? No.

Do Beast Wars, Beast Machines, TFA, TFP, Cyberverse and WFC (IDW too) villains have any reasonable motive for being evil? Yes. 

- Beast Wars Megs says he’s fighting against Maximal oppression, - Beast Machines Megs says he fights for harmony, - TFA Megs says he fights to return home, - TFP Megs started as a revolutionary, same as Cyberverse (and IDW), - RiD15 Steeljaw says he wants to create a decepticon homeworld, - WFC is the same as TFP and is special to me because he is seen to be far more conflicted about his methods than any of the above. 

“Good” motive, ey?

But lemme tell you one thing- Beast Era Megatron is an evil bitch. Nothing about what he says is true. TFA Megs isn’t a good person either.  TFP Megs even less. (and no we don’t care about his last minute redemption in the movie) Cyberverse never demonstrated any true motivation to fight for something good either. (WFC is another box and I don’t wanna go too deep into IDW because I haven’t read most of it, but I know that in Phase 1 he gives no shits and is just evil for evil sake) The idea of them having “good motives” means nothing, because their characters are still vile and evil. 

What about the anime villains? They don’t have any good motive or backstory. They do evil for evil sake. Only BWII Galvatron can be said to have a good motive, but that is basically “peace through tyranny” and it doesn’t get explored as he basically spouts his reasoning at the very end.  But besides Headmasters’ Megazarak, Victory’s Deszaras and RiD01/Cybertron Megatron, who are truly some evil bitches, most anime Decepticon leaders are more humanized than those of the cartoons, despite not having a good motive. Headmasters’ Galvatron is a far more nicer version of him than in G1. He is shown to be friendly and hugging his men on multiple occasions.  Masterforce’s Overlord is a caring leader for his men! He went against the true evil leader when that one tortured two Decepticons and joined the Autobots in the end! Also Overlord is a robot formed by Giga and his wife Mega, who act as parents to the Decepticons under their wing.  BWII Galvatron is a truly chill and nice boss with a soft spot for his younger brother, with whom he has some nice and heartwarming development in the end. Armada Megatron is shown to care for his men on multiple occasions and agrees to join forces with the Autobots against Unicron because of Starscream. He even had a sweet moment with the human characters.  Energon Megatron/Galvatron has some moments of genuine worry and care for his men too, especially Starscream, who is his favourite.  And these villains DONT have a good motive for fighting a war! They are evil for evil sake, written as evil villains to oppose heroic heroes, and they still got more nuance then the villains who DO got good motives! When do TFA or TFP Megs ever show genuine care for their men??? TFP Megs didn’t even show care about Soundwave being captured! And TFA is only nice when it benefits him and it is quite clearly only used for manipulation.  Beast Era Megs couldn’t care less about the safety of his men. And Cyberverse didn’t even want to help against the Quintessons and everything he did afterwards was to save his own ass.

So what’s the good motive for then??? It doesn’t make them more nuanced and it doesn’t make them less evil! 

In general, the anime Decepticons are far more humanized then the cartoon ones. You see them caring for another or having friendly interactions far more often than in the cartoons.  Headmasters’ got Sixshot as a genuine nice guy when he’s not ordered to do evil and leaving the Decepticons, Masterforce has the Decepticon humans be genuine friends with nice banter and the Godmaster brothers caring for each other as well + Sixknight switching sides,  Victory has the Dinoforce who all care for one another and even the Breastforce are shown moments of liking each other + Greatshot switching sides, BWII’s has Starscream and BB love each other as well as Thrust and Dirge + the Seacons being a really loving family, RiD01 has Sky-Byte as a villain who does good shit the whole time with the Predacons liking him, Armada has Demolishor being a caring teammate and Starscream as a tortured soul who is secretely very kind and switching sides, Energon has Demolishor and Cyclonus shown to be very good friends more than in Armada, Mirage being a lovesick fool, Starscream being saved by Scorponok and Sixshot loving his brother and wanting to avenge him, Cybertron has the four remaining Decepticons become buddies and end the show deciding to do evil together, after helping the Autobots save Planet Animatros. And not to forget that Soundwave and Sideways were genuine friends.

I am not saying that none of the cartoons have humanized Decepticons (roll call: BW Dinobot, Blackarachnia, Rampage + that scene where Inferno plays cards with Wasp and Quickstrike, BW Jetstorm and Thrust, TFP Breakdown, Knock Out and Dreadwing, Most Cons in Cyberverse + Globber switching sides) But you see, in those cartoons people argue that the villains have a good motive! And you got less examples of those Decepticons switching sides, being genuine friends or shown to care for their teammates.

While the Decepticons in the animes DONT have any good motives! They don’t fight for anything good and they didn’t start wanting to fight for anything good, and yet they are still shown to get along better as a team than the Decepticons in the cartoons, who are SAID to have once fought for something good!

So what does it matter how they started as a movement? How does the “had a good motive once” feature into their dynamics and actions?

Tl;DR The animes not giving the Cons a real motive to be evil is NOT a problem my peeps, as seen by the cartoons not writing their Decepticons any less evil then the animes do. 

The animes tend to write them as more “human” than the cartoons do.  PS: I didn’t mention Beast Wars Neo because I haven’t finished that one yet. Also I never ever believed that the Beast Wars cons ever fought for anything good apart maybe Dinobot, but Megatron says he fights against slavery, so :/ Also I do NOT hate the cartoons ffs, I just couldn’t let of the notion that the anime decepticons are somehow less than the cartoons ones just because they don’t have “good motives”. If anything the cartoons are more offensive for giving their clearly evil characters “good motives”. Like you either make a true grey moral stories or you just don’t give your damn pure evil villains “good” fucking motives. Which is why I just ignore the fact they supposedly have “good” motives, like who the fuck even cares when the villains themselves don’t represent that???

HOW TO BE PRODUCTIVE FOR SCHOOL tl;dr: structure, goals, and patience because it’s not gonna be easy HAHAHA

first let’s talk about the importance of routine!! humans are creatures of habit and having a structure to your life can make it a LOT easier for you to be productive :D try to pick a time that you’ll force yourself to sleep by, a time that you’ll force yourself to wake up every day, as well as set times to study and play!!! planning out your day can be sUPER helpful and it’s helped with my productivity a lot in the past ^^

i used to do bullet journalling which can help you organise your thoughts/life as well 😌😌 i haven’t done a new spread in aGES but these are some of the ones i used to use!!

there are lots of cute spreads you can print out or you can even make your own 🤩🤩 it’s super fun because it’s customisable (if i pick it up again i might to anime spreads HUEHUEHUE) and it makes you wANT to look inside then youll see the stuff you have to do and youll feel more motivated to do it 😌✨

also try to have some small goals/things you want to achieve so that you’re more motivated to work towards them!! it can be as simple as “finish all my homework by friday so i have the weekend free” or “study one extra chapter so next week’s workload is easier” :) you can even stick them on your journal/laptop/wall (or other places where you can see it), together with some motivational quotes so you’re always ✨inspired✨ to work towards something 😌

it’s definitely not gonna be easy at first but once you get into it, you’ll be on a rOLL 🤩🤩🤩 sometimes we gotta work hard for the things we want but i know you can do it bb i bELIEVE in you 🥳🥳 remember to take breaks and stay healthy okay I LOVE YOUUUU ❤️❤️

TROS Review - after second viewing

I’m glad I knew all the spoilers going into my first viewing. If I hadn’t known Ben died, I would’ve screamed. Although I’m pretty sure I heard someone at my second viewing go “What?!” when he fell over and vanished into the Force.

OK, let’s break this down.

THE GOOD

The movie looks great.

Daisy, Adam and John Williams all FUCKING brought it for this movie.

I actually liked some of the fan-service-y bits like Wedge getting a cameo, Han having a memory chat with Kylo/Ben, and Luke motivating Rey. I also noticed on the second go-around that Kylo flies an old Imperial TIE fighter (one from the Death Star ruins) to Exegol. And I like that shot of the old X-Wing of the Rebellion and the old TIE fighter of the Empire there alongside each other.

Most of all, I loved ALL the Reylo scenes we got in this movie. About 70 percent of the runtime seems to be dedicated to Rey, Kylo/Ben or both. I mean, it’s basically Reylo: The Movie, and I’m totally here for it. (But more on that below.)

I actually liked seeing Kylo in the mask again. I think it makes him look... sexy? Idk what I feel, y’all.

Some of the new creatures and characters were cool, even if we didn’t spend much time with them. (Again, more on that below.)

Loved Leia’s moments and how she had a big part to play in the story even if Carrie is gone. 😢

Those are all the big things; there might be a few small things that I’d remember if I were watching the movie in real time, but I can’t remember them now.

So, let’s get into it:

THE BAD

Oh, boy where do I start?

The pacing in both the very beginning (first 20-30 minutes?) and the very end (last 10) was ridiculous. My dad even agreed that the beginning felt rushed and disjointed.

While I love Kylo/Ben and Rey, the movie spends so much time focusing on them that no one else really gets an arc. Say what you will about TLJ, but Finn and Poe both had arcs in that movie, even if they were small. I felt like Poe did in this movie what he did in that last one: took to heart the words of wisdom of others around him (or at least, regurgitate their lines). He did it with Leia and Holdo in TLJ, and he did it with Zorri and Lando in this one. Finn doesn’t get any arc in this and the fact that he’s supposed to be Force-sensitive is like ... ??? What? I don’t even have time to unpack all that.

Also, Rose and Hux were sidelined majorly. I don’t even like Hux but even I felt his character and end were poorly done in this movie.

Something about both Finn and Rey’s Force abilities that bugged me was that I thought all Force sensitives can intuit or understand what others are saying in any alien/droid language. Remember how Rey could understand Chewie when she first met him but Finn couldn’t? It makes sense why Rey could understand a droid like BB-8 but why a Wookiee? Are there a lot of Wookiees on Jakku? No, she could understand him bc she’s Force sensitive and it’s an ability she has. But, in this one, neither she nor Finn could understand Babu Frick. I know it’s a small detail, and I could be misremembering canon, but it just bugged me both times.

So, Rey being a Palpatine... makes no sense. How and when did Palpatine have a kid? Was Rey’s dad a cloning experiment, or a naturally conceived and born child? This is something I’m morbidly curious about. I liked it better in TLJ when we thought she was no one, and this seems like a GIANT retcon and slap in the face to Rian Johnson. They even had to write a line about how Kylo supposedly never lied to her. Part of me wonders whether the Emperor was lying??? Maybe making Rey think she was his granddaughter would trick her into being obligated to come and end his life herself? But then, why was that Jedi Hunter looking for her parents? Oh well. Anyway, I did want her to be Rey of Jakku and no one else. But I also appreciate the thematic parallels and the yin/yang thing going with her and Kylo/Ben. He’s the embodiment of the Dark Side even though he’s descended from the Light, and Rey is the embodiment of the Light Side even though she’s descended from the Dark. So I’m a bit conflicted, but I hate it more than I love it.

I also HATE that Ben died. BUT, at least he didn’t die from falling into the pit, and at least there’s still a possibility that he’s coming back. The worst of it is that after he disappears, he’s never addressed again at all. Wouldn’t Poe or Finn ask about him? They don’t necessarily know he’s dead, and he would be a major threat if he were still alive. And why wasn’t he a Force-Ghost at the end? I HOPE it’s bc they’re leaving it open for him to come back. Or maybe his energy is living on in Rey whether spiritually (the dyad thing) or physically (maybe pregnant???).

But here’s the deal: in some ways this movie felt like the series finale of beloved TV show. All your favorites come back for little cameos, your main characters go out on a high note, and everything is resolved to a greater extent. Sure, there are more stories to tell, probably, but the Main Conflict has now been resolved. Think Avatar: The Last Airbender TV show or Star Trek: Voyager as examples.

BUT, in other ways, it DOESN’T feel like a finale. It feels like they’ve left doors to open and questions to explore in future properties. Is Finn Force-Sensitive? Is Jannah Lando’s relative? Is Ben Solo really dead? What’s gonna happen to Rey? Etc.

So, the movie needed to pick a lane. Either be The End of an era, or not. You can’t wrap up a story but then tease us with more stories. That’s not how this works. Fuck, even Harry Potter — as much as everyone hates JKR — got this right. Big Bad Guy is dead and instigating conflict is now resolved. Palpatine was the one who started this whole thing, so now that he’s dead, all is well???

Well, here’s my other big complaint about the movie. JJ & Co don’t seem to know how the Force works.

The Force is about a balance between the Light and the Dark. When one side becomes too strong, the other side grows stronger to compensate. When one side wipes out the other, the other responds. There must always be balance. Snoke even pointed this out in TLJ that Rey was Kylo’s Equal in the Light bc he was growing stronger.

And the Sith and the Jedi are religions on their respective sides. Not all Dark side users are Sith; not all Light side users are Jedi. And there are some Force users who use both freely and some who stay in balance.

The Mortis arc of TCW demonstrates this very well.

This is why so many people were pissed that Ben died. Not only are you losing a great character but you’re also losing the potential of what Ben and Rey could’ve been together as Force-users.

Palpatine and all the Sith are dead. Luke, Leia and all the Jedi are dead.

Except for Rey, who is descended of the Sith but trained by Jedi. So, she (and Ben) would have to figure out exactly how to keep the Force in balance. If the last Jedi just destroyed the last Sith, then the Dark Side is going to have to respond. But, if Rey could find other Force-users and teach them how to be in balance and use both Light and Dark in harmony then balance could be restored. There would be no need for these extremes if everyone stays in the middle.

This means Rey would have to end the Jedi. Which is what Luke wanted in the last movie. But then we find out that Leia received Jedi training??? So was Leia a Jedi? Is Rey? I’m so confused.

I like the fact that Rey’s saber has a darker hilt but it’s a yellow/orange blade. It kinda hints that maybe she will stay in balance — using both light and dark, being neither Sith nor Jedi, but something in between — a Skywalker, if you will.

So I guess, that’s a tiny win. The theory that the Skywalker(s) could be a new religion of Force-users in balance with the Force could still happen after that scene of Rey on Tatooine.

But, still, I hate all these retcons and the idea that the Jedi are the end-all, be-all. The Sith definitely aren’t good; but the Jedi weren’t always great either. And I hate that Rey had to fight Palpatine alone when it should’ve been her AND Ben — the balance between the Dark and Light should’ve been stronger than him, but whatever.

Also, one last thing, but why did Rey have BB-8 on Tatooine? Didn’t Poe make a big deal about Rey hurting BB-8 at the beginning? Why wasn’t BB-8 with Poe? Why wasn’t Chewie with Rey on the Falcon? (I guess he might’ve been and just never got off the ship.) Wouldn’t R2 and C3PO have been more appropriate in that final shot? They were in all 9 films. They’re more iconic and thematically appropriate than BB-8 to close out the saga, but oh well.

TL;DR: I have really mixed feelings about this movie. At the end of both showings, I was smiling, so that’s something. I had fun... I think?? But yeah, it’s definitely bittersweet.

Do you think Vince and Peter will address stuff like Saul harassing Francesca in BB or they will try to ignore it? i've read a theory that he knew he was being watched so he tried to play a part (also i noticed that BCS has way less racist and sexist jokes than breaking bad which. good)

That’s a really good question, and the answer is: I have no fucking clue. I hope they do! As much as I love him, I’m a little worried about Vince Gilligan being back in the writer’s room for season 6, (he hasn’t been all that involved with the show since season 2). Vince seems more willing to let things go unanswered. He’s repeatedly told Peter throughout the run of the show “you don’t have to answer every question, ya know!” e.g. Who’s this guy Saul’s so afraid of when Walt and Jesse kidnap him? Vince pushed back for a long time on introducing Lalo. (Ironically, I think El Camino answered too many questions, but that’s a whole other diatribe). 

What makes these shows great is that they’re so character-driven. I think the fact that there are fewer racist/sexist jokes in Better Call Saul than Breaking Bad has a little to do with the times in which they’re written, but more to do with the fact that there’s no one to tell them in BCS. Who’s gonna tell them? It wouldn’t really fit for any of the "villains” of the show. In the legal plot lines, Howard and Chuck certainly wouldn’t. The cartel is pretty homogenous, so in those plot lines the only opportunity for shit like that has come in the form of Hector and Lalo making homophobic remarks about Gus. The two characters that were primarily responsible for all the off-color jokes in BrBa were Hank and Saul. It’s uncomfortable to watch, but I think that Hank’s racism/sexism was significant to the narrative because it’s one possible answer to the question “what makes a man?” (That being said, they didn’t have to do as much as they did). Obviously a major theme throughout BrBa is masculine pride. When Walt’s ready to pack it in in season 4 (?), Gus gets him to stay by appealing to his sense of masculinity-- “what does a man do? A man provides.” Hank’s ostentatiously vulgar brand of masculinity is meant to act as a foil to Walt’s. Walt regularly feels threatened by Hank’s machismo and his ability to provide when he can’t (specifically when Hank acts as a strong male role model for Walter Jr.), but Walt is able to maintain a sense of superiority because Hank’s overt prejudices and crass attitude allow Walt to paint him as provincial and uneducated. Of course, Walt has plenty of his own prejudices, but either he doesn’t recognize them or sees them as completely justified. 

The point of Saul’s attitude, however, is a little harder to pin down. I don’t think it initially had much of a point. I think they liked the idea of a scumbag, ambulance-chasing lawyer so that’s exactly what they wrote. The fact that they cast a comedian like Bob Odenkirk just meant they could lean even harder into those attributes. They were having fun writing a scumbag, and illustrating that Walt was really getting mixed up with the wrong people at this point. It wasn’t that deep. But now, because of BCS, it is that deep! Jimmy’s still got a long way to go before he becomes Saul Goodman. The tricky thing is, we don’t how much of the Saul Goodman we see in BrBa is a performance (check this out). The idea of Saul knowing he’s being watched when he harasses Francesca sounds far-fetched to me. I also think it’d be very unsatisfying to learn that most of Saul’s despicable behavior is just an act. The whole series is based around the question “how does Jimmy become Saul?” They can’t end it by saying “jk he never actually became Saul he was just doing that all for show.” Saul has to be more than a mask that Jimmy wears.

TL;DR: I’m not saying anything remotely new here. I don’t think they’ll specifically address Saul harassing Francesca, but they’ll show how he becomes the kind of person who would do that.

Ready or not, here’s my Simp List in no particular order:

1. Kirishima Eijirou (MHA)

That Ghost series really messed up my MHA simp list.  He’s just such a precious bean and I would do anything to protect him.  Even though he would absolutely end up protecting me because. you know.  ROCK.  ugh just look at his cute lil smile and i think we need more headband!Kirishima.  TL;DR 10/10 would simp again.

2. Makoto Tachibana (Free!)

Awwwww I just adore him so so so much.  Look at his lil puppy eyes!  And that hair flop? *SOBS*  But, I have genuinely loved watching Makoto grow as a character and just a young man in general over the past three seasons. He will absolutely always have a special place in my heart because he never fails to make me smile except for that one time when he went for a swim in the ocean in the middle of a storm and nearly drowned but i don’t wanna think about that

3. Viktor Nikiforov (Yuri On Ice!!!)

I have one word and one word only: GOD.  No, but seriously, I adore him so much.  He’s genuinely so passionate about everything and his love for skating and Yuri just leaves me crying all season.  I love love love his accent and everything about him as a character.  He and this show are just absolutely stunning.  I find myself rewatching it pretty often.  In conclusion, Viktor could cut me with his skates and I would say thank you.  Yuri would too, let’s be real.

4.Draco Malfoy (Harry Potter)

Draco Malfoy deserved better. I ADORE him so so much.  Is it mainly because I find Tom Felton insanely attractive?  Oh yeah.  But, also.  Draco is such a complex character and I could go on for days and days about why I don’t think he deserves a lot of the hate that he gets.  He was 16! 16! And told to murder his headmaster! That’s fucked!

5. Sokka (Avatar the Last Airbender)

I think I love him for the soul purpose that he’s the comedic relief character??  And because he’s used for comedic relief it’s really easy to forget that Sokka is actually really intelligent and just as capable as any of the other characters in the show.  His character development is *chef’s kiss* and his protectiveness over everyone in the Gaang is really sweet and worthy of a simp.

6. Link (Legend of Zelda franchise)

I think it’s just because BOTW is my absolute favorite game and because this franchise in general just means a lot to me.  But, I love Link.  We’ve been on so many adventures together and I’ve thrown him off of many cliffs out of sheer frustration sorry bb 

7. Asra Alnazar (The Arcana)

I remember seeing him in an ad for the game and was like “Yeah. I’m sold.”  I loved his route so so much.  The writers ( @thearcanagame​ here on tumblr) did an amazing job at portraying his emotions and had me wanting to do everything in my power to get the upright ending just so I wouldn’t have to hurt this fluffy magician.

8. Joker (Black Butler: Book of Circus)

Book of Circus is absolutely my favorite spin off of Black Butler.  I loved the story line.  If I’m in a Black Butler kick, I always rewatch Book of Circus instead of the actual series??  Is it because I love Joker?  Likely.  He was just a super interesting character and I really enjoyed watching his development in such a short span of time.

9. Kazuma Hashimoto (Cheer Danshi)

Awww looking at this gif reminds me just how much I miss this anime.  It’s really sweet and wholesome.  If you’re looking for a new sports anime, I 10/10 recommend Cheer Danshi.  This show honestly throws any gender roles out the window by centering around an all male cheer leading team and Kazu is always so positive and you can tell that he really loves cheer leading and bringing the positive energy to the squad.  Yeah. I simped hard for Kazuma.

10. Bokuto Kotarou (Haikyuu!!) Best for last oya oya 

I had to find a gif that included all three of these guys because I am a complete WEENIE for all of them.  My Wattpad readers know just how conflicted I’ve been trying to figure out which of them tops my simp list.  I love them all for very different reasons, but since I called out Bokuto, let’s talk about my sweet sweet owl baby.  He’s a weenie and a simp and no one can tell me otherwise.  He would love you with every fiber in his being and god damnit i love him with every fiber in my being too.  I’m big sad that we’ve been robbed of beefy bokuto with shoulders so wide you could land a plane on them but the animators gave him some mad cake so I guess we’ve compromised.

This was actually super hard?? I never realized just how few fandoms I was actually in.  But searching for gifs of all of my sweet beans was really fun, so it was worth the literal hours of deliberating to compile my simp list.

I enjoy our conversations a lot, especially when we talk about things like Heaven’s Feel because they’re usually always such fun things to talk about.

Much like Anna, I’ve already told you what I wanted to here in the form of an ask a few hours ago - however, I do wish to say smth that I’m sure a lot of people feel. Regardless of how you think about yourself, you’re a very good person BB and we’re all very blessed to know you. You’re absolutely one of my best friends, and though there was a point where we lost communication for a bit, I’m very grateful our friendship is the exact same.

This post is incredibly long already, luckily I’m just about done -- but I’ve got three people to go starting with you two!

Sere, you’ve heard me vent a lot and you’ve known me (Kayla has known me this long too) for a pretty damn long time if you ask me, 3 years may not seem like a lot to people, but with all the stuff we’ve all gone through these 3 years? It’s been a LOT and I can’t say I’d be the person I am without you hearing my dumb ass vent and creating Cursed Night.  I appreciate all of your icons, thank you for giving us (Hell) special treatment with them. Seriously! While you are a best friend for sure, you’re also practically family to me. Thank you again for everything. 

Kayla, the same of what I said for Sere is said for you. You’re legit like my older sister, you’ve been there for me for just bout the same amount that Norgie has; you’re someone who means a lot to both me and Norgie, so thank you for giving talking to us a chance way back when you were shy (I think that’s what it was!). There have been a lot of ups and downs for all of us, but I’m glad the downs at least had the positive effect of giving me a second family who I love dearly. I actually teared up on this part, so god help me when I write for Norgie.

I’m going to save a lot of what I want to say to you for our anniversary in June, but I will say a few things because I love you so very much.

When I met you, I was not expecting you’d turn out to be the woman of my dreams. You’re genuinely my better half, and I have never been as happy as I am than I am with you. You’ve truly had the biggest impact in my life Norgie, you’ve made me laugh, cheered me up when I’m sad, called me out when I was dumb and helped me better myself. 

I’m so incredibly happy I got to spend the rest of the last decade being your boyfriend, and now, going into 2020 - a whole new decade with you. Like I said, you’re my better half - I can’t see myself with anyone else but you. You’re the greatest treasure in my life, I’m so happy we’ve had all this fun with roleplaying.

Thank you so much Norgie, for giving me Orion/Artemiis, all of our other ships - being my soulmate (at least, I think so). I hope 2020 treats us both well, but I’m willing to go through whatever as long as it’s with you.

Now, that’s the end of that -- but I have a few extra things to say.

My 2019 has been...quite possibly the hardest year of my life, at least on the internet. For a very long time, I was fearful of interacting with others - I made mistakes that I wish I could take back, I got put through hell for nothing...man, I don’t wanna go back in and say what happened, what is and isn’t true -- the long story short is, shit happened, but it’s the past now. 

I want to go into 2020 just..as positive as I can be, I’m tired of the drama, I just want to have fun with my friends and my girlfriend you know? So, I’m finally choosing to move on and just...try having fun again. This choice would be impossible without the people mentioned in this post. 

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of you who have stuck around through it all for me. I’m so incredibly thankful to be part of the friendgroup I’m in, to know everyone I’ve met who’s put up with me. I’ve had so many times where I wanted to leave this site, but I wanted to keep trying to write with everyone -- to have fun with everyone. You all have no idea how genuinely happy you’ve all made me, just by writing with my Orion and Norgie’s Artemis. 

Though I couldn’t think of anything to say specifically for the others tagged below here, thank you all for everything as well -- just following me makes me happy. I’m sure I’ve forgotten some people, but trust me, I’m so very happy to know all of you.

tl;dr: North East lass is super smart and earns herself a place at Cambridge. One bad boyfriend threatens to ruin it but she still gets her first class law degree before moving to london to do her masters. Plays nice at work but spends her weekends organising protests and petitions. Wants to be in government because fully believes in being the changes you want to see in the world. 9/10 is an absolute bean but bb has a chip on her shoulder and that 1/10 she will bite.

Born in Newcastle to two very working class parents. Her grandfathers had both been miners with her mum working as a carer and her dad an electrician. Their house was always a full one, four children and living next door to her mum’s parents who were over more than they were in their own home.

She learnt from an early age that she’d have to speak up to be heard in such a big family and so before long she had little problem making her opinion known. While her other siblings spent their time outside, she found herself more drawn to learning and also spending time with her grandparents, listening to them putting the world to rights.

After a difficult entrance exam, she managed to get a place at the local grammar school and excelled there. She captained the netball team and eventually got Head Girl. Initiatlly she’d have been happy to go to Durham or Newcastle University but with some pushing from her head of sixth form, she aimed a bit higher.

Went to Cambridge University and read Law even though she was unsure if being a lawyer was the way forward for her. She found herself a solid social circle, feeling flattered that the place she’d earnt on the netball team had brought with it new friends. None of them came from the same background as her but one of them in particular, Hugo, took her under his wing and helped her adjust to the new lifestyle.

They started dating as soon as they got back in the September of their second year and it seemed too good too be true. And it was. He constantly made it clear that she should be feeling grateful that he even looked her way, diminished her acheivements and made fun of her lingering Geordie accent. For six months she put up with it, too worried about what would happen to her social circle if they split.

The final straw came when what had started as a playful debate turned nasty and the exchange ended with her getting a black eye. It helped remind her of who she was and consequences or not, she wasn’t about to let him get away with it. She went to the police about it but due to it being a first time offence (and the money and power his family had) the case disappeared pretty quickly.

From there her social life took a downturn and she had to retreat somewhat in order to get through the next year. But all it did was help her focus on what she wanted and what she wanted to do was start changing laws and holding those accountable who thought that they were untouchable. So she worked hard to get her degree, knowing that she’d soon be changing course to politics instead.

With her third year having been made hell, she decided against doing her Masters Degree at Cambridge and instead chose King’s College. She’d loved life in London and it was there that she met her best friend and now flatmate. After graduating she took the first job that came her way and ended up working for the Earl of Devon. One rocky start and a threatened letter of resignation later, the two have a fairly stable working relationship.

She heard about the society from her friend, who is a legacy (also a wc if anyone wants to bring them xoxo) and while on paper it seems as though it could be everything she hates, she can’t deny the use that it might have. After all, if she’s going to take on the rich and powerful, she’s going to need the same firepower that they have at their disposal.

Y’all wanna know what my updated thoughts on Reylo are? No? I don’t care.

Rey and Kylo Ren met for the first time in the middle of the First Order invading Maz Kanata’s castle. Then he kidnapped her and proceeded to prod and torture her for information on BB-8. Torture. Her. It ain’t romantic y’all. Then he killed her father figure, and his actual father, Han Solo, in front of her, before chasing them outside and battling her and Finn. He throws her against a tree, guys. And manipulates her into trying to join him. She defeats him and leaves him for dead.

The Last Jedi. They meet during Force Skype and she tries to kill him. More Force Skype. She calls him a murderous snake. He tells her to find the real truth. Force Skype pt. 3. Shirtless Kylo telling her to come to him after she gets into a fight with Luke about Kylo’s turn to the dark. In the elevator, she persuades him to join the light, calling him Ben. Throne room. They fight together against Snoke’s guards after Kylo kills Snoke for still unknown reasons. Kylo persuades her to join him again. They attempt to each get the Skywalker saber. Rey leaves while Kylo is unconscious.

They have had 9 encounters over two movies, 4 of which are non violent towards each other, and 3 being the main evidence for Reylos. Even if the non violent encounters, most are still iffy on the moral scale. She obviously hates him in the beginning of TLJ and throughout TFA, but when she learns the truth, she discovers something else in her. There is no possible way, however, for a human to go from blood-boiling, shoot-on-sight hatred, to “ILY sooo much I want your babies” in a few days. Rey would, using common sense, only be interested in him to join the light side. I see it as what it is, someone finds out their enemy is broken and hurt and wants them to become better through friendship and maybe therapy, but also paying for what they’ve done. I think that Reylo is a complicated situation for what it is portrayed as. In a morally right world, it would not be canon ever, but portrayed as someone guiding a lost soul back to the light, PLATONICALLY.

*However, there are extreme amounts of sexual tension in TLJ, and I totally over looked that. They do have some form of physical attraction to each other, and why not? Idk. The elevator scene has so much tension that it could be cut with a light saber. Not to mention the throne room fight. Rian Johnson had an idea for their relationship and ran with it. That movie was more full of sexual tension than Titanic.*

That “Bad boy is restored to good with a kiss by a good girl” trope is unbelievably toxic. Relationships like that are not sustainable or healthy by any means, as they often end in abuse or neglect. Not even to say that Rey has plenty of other relationship options, like Finn(*ok maybe not Finn*)

Reylo is totally fine as an offscreen, crackship that is not portrayed like Twilight, especially to all the little girls who look up to Rey as a role model. What do you think they are gonna do when they are faced with a man like Kylo Ren when they grow up? Fall in love because “oh its okay, its so cute”. Media does influence us, especially as kids and young teens. Seeing a relationship on screen can influence us to think it is okay, especially if it is written to be okay.

Now, the fandom. Jesus Christ on a cracker. Can you all chill the fuck out? Please? You are making this place so hard to have fun in. (*Referring to the people who take it way too far, everyone else is cool*)

I’m into Reylo as a crackship. Yes, I ship it. I think they, aesthetically, are cute together, because I am a bi mess and they are hot as hell. Now, do I want them to be canon? Absolutely fucking not. Fanfics and edits are fine with me, but please keep this ship off the big screen. I feel the same way about Kylux. Crack ship up the wazoo. Do I think they’re cute? In certain fanfics and AU’s, yes! Canon wise? NOOOO.

*But you guys have fun and ship and let ship, I just wanted to rant and put my opinions up on the inter web.*

So, TL;DR

Reylo is fine as a ship if it stays away from the big screen. I ship it too, but in the same way I ship Bubba and Stretch, Momo and Todoroki, and Kylux.

APA’s Take on Downton 2019

First of all, whoever had the brilliant idea to have a 10 minute recap of the show before the film and include *those* scenes from S4E3 like.... it did not set a great tone for me. I had warning thanks to some awesome friends who messaged me, but yeah.

Anyway though here’s my very opinionated thoughts. For reference, here are the A/B spoilers.

tl;dr: this film did not give me anything I wanted, and really wasn’t about the characters, it was about making money. It felt like it was a farce, not a sequel. And Anna was grossly out of character. S6CS remains my ending.

This is my personal opinion, after one viewing so might be a bit knee-jerk; super long; contains major spoilers:

One of the main overall issues was that the pacing was... bad. Like the TV show has short scenes but this was like... on speed. And a lot happened off screen and was just mentioned. Everything was very, very rushed. And it felt sloppy to me.

And it wasn’t so much that it was because there were too many storylines. Because there barely were any personal storylines!! And’s what was lacking. The heart of the show isn’t Downton the house; it’s the characters.

Something that I’ve always thought about the show, is that your opinion on an episode or season really does depend on your favorite characters (and/or why you like the show overall). And it’s the same for the film. It’s an ensemble show and that’s the nature of it. An add-on movie therefore needs to appeal to fans of all and it does not imho.

I’m an Anna x Bates fan, and a downstairs fan. And I went in thinking, well this is gonna be pretty classist to believe that all the servants would still want to be there in 1927 (the year however is not that clear in the film). But you don’t even really have time to think about what should be going on,  because it’s such a rush of a bit of preparing and then the weekend of the royals being there. There was no time for organic personal storylines, more or less. Thomas got a tad but tbh, less than I thought he would?? Daisy and Andy are apparently engaged but don’t even act like it? 

The film isn’t a true sequel to me because it’s not showing us where these characters would go with their lives after the show. The plot was chosen first and it’s obvious. 

And that creates a feeling of disconnect that makes the film seems isolated from the TV show. Like it wanted to be stand alone, but also had to juggle using established characters. But it could not honor the 52 episodes before it. And I mean, you can’t cram everything people loved about the TV show into 2 hours, no matter what they all say. However, the most major issue is that the film is plot driven, whereas the show was character driven.

As I feared, the downstairs characters were caricatures. They more or less all shared one plot, or facets of it (barring those mentioned above). Even upstairs really didn’t have as much going on either personal life wise other than Edith and Tom (well and the new characters, but it shouldn’t be about them at all). But that is a fraction of the cast. This is not at all Downton Abbey to me, with several interwoven plots. There wasn’t 22 plots lines, nor 11 even if divide them into one plot per couple.

I primarily wanted to see Anna and Bates with their son, their much longed for child. But he was barely in it for five seconds, with only one of his two scenes actually with his parents, which undermines his symbolic importance in the TV show. 

I really did fear Anna being out of character and concocting a stupid scheme. And then it turned out to be worse. She drugged someone and blackmailed another. W T F. It’s like Fellowes forgot who she is. Like okay she wasn’t drugged in S4 but that is really disturbing all the same, and why would Anna blackmail someone after she herself has suffered at the hands of it (i.e. Vera).

And of course while I am super super glad that Anna and Bates are happy and not being traumatized, I also would have like a sense that they overcame a lot to get this point, and that vibe is just so missing that it makes it seem like their film counterparts don’t have their TV show plots as a backstory. Hell, we barely actually saw that they were happy, given that their child was in one scene with them??? Where was the “devotedly raising their son” that the TV Guide promised???

I mentioned this in the spoiler post, but you know S3CS and the Marvelous scene? Why didn’t I get something similar with Bates toasting Anna??? You can be lighthearted and still be poignant. And that is what is missing. It wasn’t poignant with them at all. 

I mean it makes sense that it’s not tragic and of course I didn’t want it to be. But it lacks depth and cheats the characters. Having a fun romp is nice, as is levity, but DA also needs to be poignant, or it's meaningless and superficial.

Like the happy part with them is really that they saved the day and the honor of Downton. Yeah nope. I had thought I was gonna complain about how they put the honor of Downton first before their child, but because of the short amount of days covered in the film, it kinda makes sense as to why we didn’t really see him but it’s that Fellowes put honor of Downton first before their child when he wrote this plot. We could gotten at least had a line of Anna saying to Bates, ugh the royal visit means less time with our kid.

“It’s got everything all the fans want”, except not only did I not get Anna pregnant again nor a whiff of a hotel (which I knew were pipe dreams but when you tell me the show is over and I can dream up my headcanons... LET THEM HAVE THEIR DREAMS!!), but I didn’t even get to actually see my favorite character again. Fellowes changed her personality to fit his plot, and it stinks. This is what happens when you make a plot first for what was a character driven TV show.

I cannot understand why Fellowes thought, ah yes, the favorite storyline people had of Anna's was Anna Bates Investigates. I'll pepper it with "fight fire with fire" and then make her... drug someone and commit blackmail??? (and remember why she said that line in S1E5? because someone was directly happening to the man she loved. Yeah). Instead you know, showing her happy with her family. The Anna at the end of the TV show is not the same Anna as S1 or S3. She had to overcome so much. While of course I don’t want overt references because I want her to have healed and moved forward with her life, film!Anna seems to have no knowledge of her past.

Why is this weird scheme Anna’s plot in the first place? It’s even worse than I thought it would be??? Because Anna has always been labeled a Good Person and also the “moral center” were we supposed to think that what she did was a good thing? Did he confuse her with O’Brien? Do all lady’s maids need to scheme and Anna hasn’t done enough of that??

And when you have been through a lot of horrible traumatic things, you want more mundane stories. Not some weird out of character mess. I’m very defensive of TV!Anna, but her two subplots are being rightfully panned.

Even though Brendan was also doing a play during filming, Bates managed to be in it decent amount. He didn’t really have plot beyond being in on the one scheme of Anna’s but tbh I didn’t need him drugging people either.

I know I ought to be grateful that Brendan was able to be in the film and that Bates is like... live. But tbh I feel like I deserve more than that. They could have made better use of Brendan’s time.

Also having BB (who I will still refer to as that because again, I don’t like the film’s name choice for him, and clearly he had no canon given name before now) in only one scene with his parents and then the gallery scene with the nanny like. Nope.

Again, I get Brendan’s limited availability but I really could have used A LOT more Bates Family moments, considering how long it took them to have a child. And... not like Joanne wasn’t available and they could have had Anna doting on him more. It’s just the one scene for a hot hot second. Like we had more of him in the end of S6CS and he was literally just born. YEAH.

Like Anna went through a lot to have him, and I get that filming with kids can be a struggle but for a woman who once said “when a woman loves a child, it must stay with her,” she might like... spend more time with her kid than work on her schemes. Fellowes basically stripped her of the one dream she got fulfilled after all the trauma, along with her morals. What she did here is not strength, let me say that.

It’s one thing to shove off the Crawley kids, but it’s for not a couple who not only longed for a child, but also is working class, and who we have always known would take an active role in their child’s life...

But yeah the lack of shippy scenes, like Fellowes wtf, married couples can be romantic, and I got no kiss. I have to wonder if that one still is from a deleted scene. 

I mean I love teamwork stuff! But with A/B you can't just give me that and say "here have this it's shippy, haha #TeamBates!", (Team Bates has three people on it now though!!) and the film is lacking actual romantic moments or family moments. And a lot of Anna’s plot happened off screen so it’s not like we even saw him discussing it with her???

And sorry Mary, but one of those scenes with her could have been swapped to Anna with her child. And the friendship lines were so... again... just there, when it could have been really nice. And the scene where she mentions staff leaving to Anna and I’m like... can Anna and her family leave and get their hotel? No?? Did they give up on that dream??

(On a shallow note, the wigs were horrendous in this. Mary’s bangs/fringe was horrid, and I’ve already voiced my opinion about how I don’t think Anna would ever get a bob and damn that wig was so wiggy. Pro tip: if you have to use a wig, don’t cheat and use ones you just plop on an actress’s head. I think the hair was a sign of how out of character Anna was gonna be in this film.)

I get that the more mundane things isn't as exciting for the casual audience for a film, but if Fellowes wanted this to be sequel to the TV show, it can't be some throwaway thing. He has include furthering the characters' lives. And instead he stuck them in stasis, and forced them into these plots because he came up with it first versus writing what was logically next for them.

And that’s because Fellowes didn’t want many status quo changes (along with wanting it more stand alone and time constraints). I honestly am unsure what the scene with Violet is really saying. At a different time I would have said that if Violet died, that was the end, but maybe it was saying that Downton the franchise will continue without Maggie Smith as Downton the estate will without Violet (also that scene with Violet and Mary was the few that had depth in the film; Thomas could have been deeper imho but at least he had something).

I get that some people don’t mind filler, but the TV show overall was a serial, and if this is the new ending, I need more than filler. A/B got a baby out of the finale, what did they get out of this? Just stasis. That’s not an ‘ending’, time really hasn’t moved on, has it?

Clearly, the issue is that S6CS was written as the end, and the film only has that feeling with Violet and her health. The Bateses needed to leave and get the hotel. I guess maybe Baxley isn’t canon in Fellowes’ mind after all, but at least figure out what is going on with Daisy and Andy??

I have said this approximately 1 million times, but what I love about DA is the characters. If you aren't gonna build off of 6 series of backstory and go with the organic plot of the characters' personal lives, then no thank you. This film fails to be Downton Abbey to me. It fails to be a continuation. 

Anna and Bates deserve more children, they deserve the hotel, they deserve the world after all the pain and suffering. They deserve all their dreams. You all know I love their son so so much. But what they got in the film was not enough. This was crumbs of what could have been.

Things could be worse but this was... not. good. And I fear that any subsequent films, if they were to do them (without Violet/Maggie??)... would also not have an sense of an ending. Let alone an ending. Which S6CS had, and was super poignant. The TV show left me in a good fulfilled place. This is a tacked on add on doesn’t do that at all for me.

And if Fellowes is holding off on certain things for future sequels, then when does it end? Do Anna and Bates only ever get the hotel if Joanne says no to sequel to the film (it would be easy for Brendan to say no)? Are we still gonna end up with more shallow plots that don't advance the characters' personal lives? Because when would Fellowes know to do that if there's literally never an ending again? BB came at the end of the show because Fellowes stalled on it on purpose for their child to come at the end. What was the end anyway. The film wasn't the future that they were set up to have.

I get that there was only two hours and you can only do so much. But that also proves that there was no reason to do this film if there wasn’t that many established loose ends to wrap up. And what I consider loose ends (e.g. A/B and the hotel), were ignored.

While yes, the TV show did continue because it was successful i.e. money, Fellowes had an idea because it hadn't ended yet. A/B potentially will never have more children or leave DA and get the hotel all because of greed. We could dream of those things still where the TV show let off. Now... I don’t even know. And it really upsets me that they took that from them. And from me. BB was my reward for staying when I should have raged quit (i.e. S4E3). There’s more to Anna and Bates’ lives than just being loyal servants. Quite a lot. So it’s kinda insulting.

But we are supposed to be happy they are alive! Be happy no more trauma! But I mean, it cost Anna her characterization. I didn’t suffer though several years of pain and misery for the movie to just be filler and OOC. I’m going back to the S6CS as my ending where Anna was actually in character.

If this was a film to a totally unrelated to Downton Abbey that Fellowes wrote, with a whole cast of characters that never existed before in some other castle, it would be a glitz fun romp (that’s light on human drama) but you just cannot force characters with 52 episodes of development and exposition into these "roles" for this plot driven film.

But for me, this is not at all what I wanted if we had to have this film.

An Elusive Computer Post

Y’all, 99.999% of the time, I exist on my phone and tablet. It’s very rare that I do any Fandom Stuff or social media on my laptop. But tonight, after This Episode, I had to break out the big guns. I need to be able to type as fast as my brain screams words. tl;dr: EVERYTHING IS THE WORST AND I HATE IT. Hey I’ll do a fun little page break so you don’t have to scroll past this whole thing if you don’t want to. How nice of me.

JUST DON’T with this foster parent (allegedly) killing a foster child thing. Foster parents have enough of a negative perception as it is... a foster parent who “cracked” and killed a child in her care certainly won’t help. And I know this won’t turn into a well-done, thoughtful Discourse on the lack of support and resources for foster parents who are caring for children with complex needs. So I hate it. 

I’m so, so, so sad for this child.

Sidenote re: Sam saying “I’ve already got a mom” (explaining why he didn’t call his foster parent “mom”) - okay, BB, one actual sensitive portrayal here, thumbs up. 

Welp Erin’s boss is an asshole but so’s everyone else on this show. What else is new? 

And now Sam is locked out of his new foster home. Another nice tally in the Negative Portrayal column. This is disgusting. His appreciation for his previous foster parent is obvious (this kid’s a ten times better actor than fucking Will “Dead Face” Estes at this point) and I hate this entire concept. At least the show’s portrayal of the child in foster care himself is positive. 

Now Sam’s at Anthony’s house and this is off topic, but for half a second can we appreciate that Sam is also a bajillion times better at apologies than Jamie Reagan? Nice. 

If Anthony becomes Sam’s foster parent I will be SO ANNOYED. One, because I’m sure the show won’t even hint at an accurate process - it’ll be insta-parent, Anthony walks into some caseworker’s office and walks out with physical custody of a child (fun fact: it takes three months or longer to get licensed as a foster parent). Two, because it’s kind of another blow to the reputation of foster parents that this episode is painting - like the only suitable foster parent in a whole city of veteran, trained, experienced FPs is this newbie? This does not taste good. 

This is a cute scene. Rather than Anthony being Sam’s foster parent, how about he becomes his mentor? 

OH. NICE. EXACTLY WHAT I DIDN’T WANT. “I’m going to sign the papers later today. I’m going to foster Sam myself.” Can we please get some follow-up on this, BB? Let’s please see Anthony trying to navigate the waters of parenting a teenager who likely has attachment-related diagnoses and other challenges. Is Anthony going to get trauma-informed care training? Or is he just going to wing it and hope that it’s all magical and swell? Does he have a sensitive, non-snarky bone in his body? I’m on the edge of my seat. (LOL @ Erin being the voice of reason here.)

OH. WHOA WHOA WHOA. “It’s not like I always wanted a son, but one came knocking and I answered the door.” Remember that line above where Sam reminded us that he has a mom? Do you understand why this line made me gag? There’s a fine line you walk as a foster parent, where you’re performing all the duties of parenting this child as if they’re your own - but you have to remember and be sensitive to the fact that they’re not. Kids in foster care are a package deal, yo, they come with a whole other family too. For teenagers this is an especially important Issue. 

This entire storyline was terrible. 0/10. 

Fat Shaming (Frank and co)

Poor Witten, you guys. That is awful and terrible and dangerous that her partner can’t even make it up 4 flights of stairs. “I’m here and you’re fine” - but what if she wasn’t? 

Did Sid Gormley just use the word “fat shaming” and argue that physical fitness does not affect a cop’s ability to do their job? 

Cops who are on the beat should be able to pass a fairly high standard for physical fitness. The end, basically.

Family dinner (tossed in here due to the topic of conversation): Seriously? Henry’s going to talk about it being discrimination to require cops to meet a physical fitness standard that is a pretty basic aspect of their ability to do their job? Nice. 

Oh, magical, Frank has come up with a Compromise that Makes Everybody Happy. Raise your hand if you’re surprised.

TBH I hardly noticed this storyline at all. I’m much too busy angrily scribbling all of the examples of Dismissive Jamie on my whiteboard. Oh well, win some lose some.

The way Jamie brushes Eddie off during this whole New Partner Discussion is gross. Refer to yesterday’s Two Pronged Complaint for the details. 

The Biggest Issues: Jamie minimizing Eddie’s experience on the job, and being too protective of her/failing to be an objective boss. Et cetera. 

“wHaT eLsE dOn’T I kNoW?” suck a dick, Jamie Reagan.  

Peep those obviously empty coffee cups that probably have a piece of dry ice at the bottom to make the “steam.” A+. 

I’m going to keep track of how many times “female empowerment” is said in this episode. I’ll keep you updated. 

So this “fraternal organization” that we’ve all been so stressed about Eddie joining is...basically a women’s intramural sports league? LOLOL so I’m super excited to watch Jamie sputter about how Joe died playing softball* and therefore Eddie shouldn’t join. 

LOOK AT EDDIE. She is legitimately excited about the idea of playing softball, dude. That smile is as much personality as we’ve gotten out of her all season. CAN’T WAIT TO WATCH JAMIE “WET BLANKET” REAGAN SNUFF THAT RIGHT OUT. 

This ~date night~ situation is hilarious in a Young Childless Couple way. 

OH, so NOW Jamie’s interested in a legitimate conversation with Eddie, engaged and responding... with questions in a demanding, rude tone? I’m so annoyed at his whole handling of the Eddie’s-new-partner thing.

I’m so angry that the scene cuts off there. Did they just go about their stupid dinner date with this Tension floating palpably in the air between them? Did Eddie pull out an “I think I’ll sleep at my place tonight” and stalk away in that red? satin? dress? ? I hope she poured his stupid ON TAP IPA (objectively the worst type of beer, btw) down his shirt and walked out. 

I AM SO SAD watching this scene of Eddie backing out of softball. 

“I’m not much of a joiner” is a DUMB RIDICULOUS LINE and Eddie says it TWICE, folks. 

Witten doesn’t bring up Jamie at all - I therefore assume she doesn’t know Eddie’s a Future Reagan (which is a whole other issue, but anyway.) . Witten thinks Eddie’s backing out so as to avoid associating with Witten. So I assume Witten’s intentions with the softball invite were totally pure. IMAGINE THAT! A woman who wants to be friends with another woman, one who she works with and respects and wants to get to know better! With no ulterior motive! Someone please hit Jamie Reagan in the nostril with a dart. 

I like Witten more and more. Can we replace all the Reagan storylines with Witten, Sam, and Old Eddie in dark jeans and a studded jacket?

A LAUNDROMAT? ONE: Shouldn’t Jamie, as A Reagan, have laundry in his building?* TWO: It he didn’t, why wouldn’t they do laundry for free at Frank’s house every week?*

I CAN SMELL THE TENSION and I am legitimately curious how they’ve coexisted between the date and now. How’s that working out, hmm - that “keeping work and home separate” thing? 

“I DIDN’T TELL YOU TO, I ASKED” says Jamie. Shall we go back a few bullet points to when he told her it’s a “no-go”? 

I NEED TO KNOW WHAT ELSE I NEED TO KNOW - Same, Eddie. Do I really need to reiterate how ridiculous this whole thing is - that they’re engaged without dating, and now finding out that maybe there’s a reason people date first, even if they’re best friends, because this is the kind of stuff you work out before you start shopping for your dress.

“Are we talking, or are we just talking smack?” SOME ACCUSATION from the dumbass who said ALL THE THINGS IN THOSE BULLETS UP ABOVE. 

Finally, for once, Eddie is voicing some real and legitimate concerns. Are we going to get any sort of resolution or mature adult discussion of these things? NOPE! 

Did he seriously just tell her to cut it out? I hate him so much. I hope somebody duct tapes him to the front of those washer/dryers and pulls out each individual eyebrow hair with tweezers. 

This laundromat scene just exemplifies so many of the issues I’ve been rage blogging about all damn season. Jamie ultimately brushing off Eddie’s concerns without ever giving her real answers. Not having the respect for her to even take her thoughts into account. Barking orders like he knows it all, and Eddie isn’t capable of making her own decisions. At least this time that’s the actual point of the scene rather than the nasty subtext. 

EDDIE AND DANNY SCENE: I’m actually surprised that this is the first time Joe has been mentioned. Watching the sneak peek I figured Jamie’s main argument against Eddie joining an organization would be that it’s what got his brother killed (being vague, obviously, since Eddie clearly didn’t know the details). Not that it’s improper As A Reagan. I hoped the context of the episode would make me feel a little better about this scene but it just feels even more out of place and poorly/choppily written. I like Eddie and Danny together - I’d like them to interact more. But this didn’t do it for me. Gotta meet that Joe Mention Quota* on the season, I guess. 

FINAL SCENE: in summary, FUCK THIS. 

Sidenote: When is someone going to get suspicious @ how often Eddie gets pulled into Sarge’s office? 

For the record, I anticipated an eye-rolly “Ohhkay, maybe I overreacted...” speech. 

WHAT WE GOT FELL BELOW EVEN THAT VERY LOW BAR. 

Jamie explains himself. Fine, he has a right to do that, and it’s constructive in helping Eddie understand the man she’s about to marry (god don’t even remind me). BUT HE DOES NOT ADMIT ANY WRONGDOING. 

THERE IS NO APOLOGY

THERE IS NO ADMISSION THAT HE MADE MISTAKES in how he spoke to her, ordered her around, and didn’t even stop for eight seconds to listen to what she had to say

THERE IS NOT EVEN THE VERY MINIMAL “I overreacted” type of acknowledgment. 

“So maybe if I forget sometimes, you can remind me” THIS IS GROSS TOO because it essentially puts the burden on Eddie to teach/remind Jamie how to HAVE AN ADULT CONVERSATION AND NOT BE AN ASS. He could AT LEAST take responsibility for his own improvement in the Future. 

Eddie said literally two words in this entire scene. There was no mutual understanding, no real agreement, no genuine Development in their relationship. 

THIS IS NOT A SATISFACTORY RESOLUTION TO THIS CONFLICT. 

This episode is called Rectify but NOTHING HAS BEEN RECTIFIED. 

ALSO, this seems like an awfully Personal conversation to be having in uniform, Sarge. Are they even trying anymore? 

HE JUST THREW A SOFTBALL GLOVE AT HER. Is that supposed to be... sweet? Touching? An admission of guilt/mistake/wrongdoing? TRY AGAIN, BB. NONE OF THE ABOVE. 

WELL. If you’ve made it this far, I hope you’re as disgruntled as I am. Seems like plenty of y’all were quite unhappy with this episode as well. I’m enjoying your tweets and sadness. TTYCT Write Up

Hey everyone. So I went to ttyct twice- once in Lethbridge and the other in Red Deer. 

First off, let me just say that if there is a show coming remotely close to you, buy tickets and go because it was a once in a lifetime experience (or two if you go to more than one). 

Now that I’ve had a few days to digest what I witnessed, this show was extremely different from SOI. Stars on Ice is laid out where usually each act does 2 individual numbers whereas ttyct, the first act was individual, but the second was all group numbers for the most part. Let’s break down the whole thing.

Opening: In Lethbridge, I was on the ice level and man oh man was that ever worth it. When they all came out with their flags looking so beautiful, smiling so bright, I immediately got a great feeling about the show. It was a really nice touch for them to sing O Canada at the beginning. Right after they transition into Let’s Dance, and honestly that was one of my favourite numbers in the show. They all set the tone right away for both shows on what they were trying to accomplish which is to make people dance, and let me tell you, I was grooving in my seat.

Weapo: I was lucky enough that since I got to go to back to back shows, I saw their tango romantica and the FD. The tango was okay, they showed passion and it seems like they’ve been working on it super hard. Their FD in Red Deer was gorgeous and a really nice tribute to Denis Ten. 

Elvis: the man, the myth, the legend, did his iconic kung fu routine and holy cow can that man ever skate! People around me were crying, it was just fantastic. 

Kaetlyn: my sweet angel did black swan and god bless it was so amazing. She was on in Lethbridge, hit every jump clean, was confident, all that good stuff. In Red Deer, she missed her first jumping pass which unfortunately set the tone for the rest of the routine, but the crowd was so supportive. 

Meagan and Eric: they did with or without you!!!!! (one of my faves of all time) they are mesmerizing skaters, they cover the ice so well, they really draw you in and I love love love. 

Chiddy: Phantom!!!! Yeah he really did that, it was super cool. I love him. I can’t say much more.

Tessa and Scott: okay so at first when we found out they were doing MR again, I was like meh I don’t really care if I see it again, but then they came out with their hands all over each other and being sweet and soft and fierce all at the same time and immediately changed my mind. There’s just something about it that will make me want to watch it forever and ever. Amen. 

Memories: holy shit y’all, this was BEAUTIFUL. I don’t want to spoil it all but there’s a montage and it’s so emotional and they’re all bbs and I was crying a little bit and then they all come out and do a sequence from their most iconic programs (cue Mahler). Catch me on the floor. 

Intermission

Tragically Hip Group: fjhewhsigheairhgaiorgoj I LOVED. I LOVED. They’re all hot. From Tessa’s long time running body suit to Scott in plaid and the idea behind a Canadian program, it was a banger. 12/10 would recommend and watch 100 times over. What made it so awesome was that it looked like they were all having the time of their lives. 

Dance Battle: Heh. Holy shit. I was rendered speechless both damn nights. Girls in their outfits which are actually not that bad in person, to the boys ripping their shirts off. It’s a real family show. In Red Deer, I sacrificed not watching Pony so I could watch the girls in the corner and I wish I was at an angle to film it well because Miss Tessa was out here licking her lips and giggling like a school girl watching them. She looked like she was about to pounce. Okay, yeah, it’s normal. 

Weapo: they did a super sick routine to an edgy version of I wanna dance with somebody. It was awesome. Super flowy, but sharp, they made this song their bitch. 

(this is where I forget what else I watched cause the whole second half was like being high)

uh yeah, it was hot, they’re hot, I don’t know what else to say. You’ve all seen video by now. Scott looked like he had steak and potatoes in front of him the whole time. Tessa was teasing him. Iconic, legendary, amazing, beautiful, brilliant. They didn’t follow the original choreography one bit. 

Flash mob: first off wtf. Kaetlyn comes out and absolutely rips it to I Like It- cue everyone else in matching yellow and green? they do all the moves and stuff and while it was all very confusing, it was a lot of fun. In Lethbridge, when Tessa and Scott do their little salsa thingy and Tessa was so flipping cute!!!!!!!! their doing it and Tessa just goes “JUST SHAKE IT” to Scott, I died. And the finale to Diamonds: it was so pretty. So, so, so, so pretty. Single tear. The body suits look SO much better in person and the white shirts with black pants were hawt.

That was it. I sat in my seat after both shows attempting to process what I just watched and I still am trying to comprehend. I’m now in withdrawal. 

Also, some of you know that I went to the meet and greet. I’m not gonna share my experience from that because I want to be able to keep some things to myself. But know that they’re all the most lovely and gorgeous human beings. I got to talk to Tessa and Scott for over 5 minutes and they apologized for having to stop. They are so lovely and amazing. 

Okay tl;dr TTYCT was worth all the driving and money. The merch is BOMB and I love this cast with all my being. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
