Let’s Talk About When Willow’s Eyes Turn Green
I have heard some people question why Willow has her green eyes in certain scenes versus others. So let’s think about this for a minute by taking in the big magic scenes with her green eyes and compare them to the ones without the green eyes.
————————
The scenes with green eyes:
- Willow getting angry after Amity’s bullying sets her off and makes her sick of Abomination magic (I Was a Teenage Abomination)
- Willow trying to make a path for Luz to escape from getting dissected (I Was a Teenage Abomination)
- Willow trying to protect herself and Gus and make their way to Luz (Really Small Problems)
- Willow using her powers in front of Amity while telling her she doesn’t need her protection and wants her to see who she really is (Labyrinth Runners)
- Willow using her powers to attack Kikimora in an attempt to free Luz, who was disguised as Hunter at the time (Clouds on the Horizon)
- Willow expressing her stress and anger towards Boscha (For the Future)
- Willow breaking down emotionally while attempting to use her magic (For the Future)
The vast majority of these involve Willow experiencing an intense emotion that is tied to her personal character and character growth, mainly her perception of her being weak.
————————
The scenes without green eyes:
- Willow fighting the bounty hunters (Hooty’s Moving Hassle)
- Willow fighting the Basilisk (The First Day)
- Willow playing in the Grugby game (Wing it Like Witches)
- Willow fighting against Lilith (Agony of a Witch)
- Willow playing in the Flyer Derby game (Any Sport in a Storm)
- Willow protecting the Emerald Entrails against Darius (Any Sport in a Storm)
- Willow fighting against an army of Coven Scouts and an Abomaton with Hexside students (Labyrinth Runners)
- Willow fighting against Belos (King’s Tide)
- Willow fighting against possessed Hunter (Thanks to Them)
————————
The vast majority of these are traditional fight scenes against a threatening antagonist.
Most shows use glowing eyes as a power up for scenes that resemble the latter, but TOH decides to use Willow’s glowing eyes as a trigger from an internal conflict rather than an external conflict.
Next time you question “why does/doesn’t Willow have her glowing green eyes?”, ask yourself what the threat towards Willow is. Is it an evil villain, or is it something personal to her? That should answer your question.

Raine's Last Words
OK maybe somebody else already said this but I just realized this and it's blowing my mind so I'm gonna talk about it
So in King's Tide, the draining spell is happening and everyone is dying. And Raine uses the last of their strength to save Eda's life.
And they have no idea if they are going to survive, so as far as they know, this could be the last time they talk to Eda
And they choose to say this:
"I promised a special kid I'd protect you."
And it's really interesting to me that these were the last words they chose.
Because think about it.
The last time they worked with Eda to stop the emperor, Eda almost killed herself because she thought Luz and King didn't love her enough and were going to leave her.
And Raine just barely stopped her from going through with it.
And it's haunted them ever since, to the point where they spent the entirety of season 2b trying to keep Eda away from making that kind of choice ever again.
But of course, there was no other option, and eventually Eda had to get involved.
So with their dying breath, Raine chooses to tell Eda one specific thing: that she is LOVED. That there is a kid out there who loves her and needs her and made them promise to protect her.
And of course, they could have said "I love you." Because Raine knows they still love Eda.
But they chose to remind Eda that Luz loves her, not only because that was something Eda wasn't sure of last time, but also because Raine doesn't think they are going to make it out of this alive, so they need to remind Eda that there are still people, ALIVE people, who love her and need her.
And they used their dying breath to tell her that, protecting Eda in more ways than one.

Okay all my love to TOH fandom but one of the biggest Ls is the fans making “huntlow” the primary ship name for Hunter and Willow when the crew used “Winter” and it is SO MUCH BETTER AND PRETTIER AND 😭 I wish it was more commonly used I love when ships make clever names

LUZ’S CAT HOODIE WAS FORESHADOWING OF THE SYMBOL OF THE REBEL MOVEMENT SHE’S SO PIVOTAL TO THIS WHOLE TIME -
I love her. I love that she’s so important to so many people and the setting and the narrative, that she now is the the ‘this one kid can and will change an entire fantasy world for the better and save it from evil’ archetype she once looked up to as escapism, but none of it has anything to do with her Destiny or Powers or Great Heritage. It’s because of herself. Her active mind and enormous heart, her passion and courage; her willingness to stand up for what’s right and reach out to people with kindness and belief; her unwavering desires to understand and help. Qualities and abilities anyone can actually have. So it feels earned in a way the Chosen One narrative usually doesn’t. Glyph magic is just adapting to her environment and manipulating the available resources to work for her - that’s what humans do! I love that ‘Luz the human’ has almost become a heroic title as well as an identifier, her humanity being the source of all her strengths. There’s genuinely nothing more innately good or special about her than any other person. She is Luz the Human and that is enough. This is why it’s so perfect and fitting that the mighty, despicable villain Emperor Belos is just Phillip the Human, no more immoral than any of us can be.
I know that’s quite a grand speech to be inspired by such a little detail, but… look. The only reason she wears that cat-eared hoodie is that she likes cats and therefore it. That is literally it. It’s one of the multitude of casual preferences and tiny choices that make us, well, human, and makes Luz Luz. However, now - even if it was pure coincidence, which it may not have been if Raine was thinking of a name she’d like - the ultimate united front of fighters for freedom and justice has a name that spells out CAT and it wouldn’t exist, some of its members would be dead, without this random teenager in her cat hoodie. Cats mean something big and powerful only because Luz made them mean something big and powerful. Like how she made herself an incredible hero and witch. “Everything’s coming full circle” indeed.
(Amity is gonna be pleased about the acronym, by the way. Petition to make Ghost the CAT’s mascot. You have to respect Raine making a great resistance organization naming formula and then just sticking with it. If it works, it works, Darius!)
