Most recent mundane thing caught on the Friday Files: Peter recently it seems, sustained an injury (just bruising) to his jaw, and as he heals slower in the winter it’s bugging him a little longer than usual. The day after, Tony caught him sitting at the counter, adorably struggling to bite into an apple. Tony of course did a Dad Thing and cut it up for him, but also added some Gouda to his plate and now Peter has a new favorite snack combo!
Poor Peter! Good thing Tony is so dad-shaped and therefore inclined to do dad things. I would kill to see the footage of Tony cutting up an apple and making little gouda cheese cubes. I heard through the grapevine that Peter has a special snack plate at the tower. I understand it's one of those little separated kiddie plates with iron man on it. Tony bough it to be funny but Peter loves it? Can FRIDAY confirm??

In Safe Hands
Pairing: Platonic!Tony Stark and ofc
Warnings: referenced vehicular accident at the beginning, maybe some light angst
Summary: Tony didn’t quite know why he was standing there.Actually, he did know why. He just didn’t want to believe it. It was his second funeral in eight years - the funeral for two of the five people he would actually call his friends. Closest to the caskets was the one who got left behind from that fatal crash - and was also the one who had yet to look up from the ground. It was their daughter Katherine, who had just turned three.
*~*~*
Tony didn’t quite know why he was standing there.
Actually, he did know why. He just didn’t want to believe it.
It was his second funeral in eight years. Not bad, when one considers the reality of life and how people die every second of every day - meaning that there are potentially a lot of funerals he could go to.
But he only had a handful of people he liked in more than the I’m-legally-obligated-to-deal-with-you sense, so the reality of the number of funerals he would actually attend was quite small.
But this was one of them. The funeral of two people he would actually call his friends.
Their names were Oscar and Tiffany, and they met after being paired up during Freshman Orientation at MIT. Found out they had a lot in common, became friends, started dating, and married each other as soon as they graduated college. The classic love story that a lot of girls at the boarding school across from his used to swoon about.
But, their love story was cut short when both died in a fatal head-on collision where the intoxicated driver got away with just a broken collarbone, three broken ribs, and a twisted ankle.
Wasn’t that just stereotypical.
Tony looked around the funeral home and was once again surprised by how few people were in attendance. Oscar was about as pleasantly extroverted as one could get, and Tiffany made the best cookies, so it really was a shame how few people showed up to remember them.
Maybe the bitterly cold autumn weather was the blame.
Closest to the caskets was the one who got left behind from that fatal crash - and was also the one who had yet to look up from the ground.
It was their daughter Katherine, who had just turned three.
Tony couldn’t help but watch her - seeing as he was now her legal guardian courtesy of the will Tiffany had the unfortunate foresight to make. He was trying to remember absolutely everything Oscar and Tiffany ever said about her, anything he had ever observed from her, and anything that Katherine herself said in passing as she played with the probably-a-bit-too-old-for-her toys that Tony bought when he took care of her, trying to come up with a reason why she didn’t appear to be reacting to anything.
But he was coming up empty.
Katherine was a bright little spark, and nearly always wanted to know what Tony was doing, as was often the case for her age. He babysat her a few times, and once tried to bore her to sleep with mechanical and electrical engineering when she was too hyper.
Not that it worked, because she begged him to tell her about the ‘sparky science’ before going to sleep (Tony couldn’t help but hope that Oscar continued teaching her about it when she was sent home).
But this child who was right in front of him was vastly different from the one he knew. She was still, and she was quiet.
The fact there was a massive bandage on her face probably didn’t help much, either.
He vaguely wondered if children that young were capable of suffering from depression. He’d have to ask Rhodey later.
When the caskets were placed in the ground, he stuffed his hands back into his coat pockets and watched Katherine, who was sitting next to a woman who looked like she could have been her aunt.
He waited until the crowd thinned out, before he made his way closer to Katherine. Unfortunately, he was stopped by a heavy-set man with a scowl engraved on his face.
Tony really wouldn’t have been surprised if this man came out of the womb looking like that.
“You must be Anthony,” The man gruffed, holding out his hand.
“Tony,” he corrected, taking the offered hand. His father only called him Anthony when he was in trouble, and it sent an uncomfortable shiver up his spine.
“Gregory,” The man stuffed his hand back into his pocket. “Look, we already know that Oscar listed you as the one that Katherine would go to if he and Tiffany died,”
Tony nodded.
“But let’s be honest, you live on the other side of the US, far away from what she recognizes to be home. Why don’t you give up your rights to her and she can stay with us? Her family?”
He bristled. “No. I was asked to look after her, which I will be doing to the best of my abilities. Besides, you haven’t said your relationship with Katherine. For all I know, you could be some pervert who should be locked up.”
Gregory’s face grew red, but he didn’t comment, which made Tony wonder if he was at least a little bit correct. “Anthony,” Gregory sighed, and Tony didn’t bother to correct him, “You’re not the best example of for a young child. They will be watching and copying your every move, whether you like it or not. And I have heard about your latest, let’s say, celebration,”
He was really starting to dislike this guy. “I understand that children look to their authority figures for guidance, as I was a child myself. You don’t have to worry about her receiving negative influence under me.” This means that he’d have to stop drinking and going to parties, but he would do it. He would do anything to prove this man in front of him wrong and make him terribly embarrassed.
“You are also a busy man, Tony. She needs constant attention, which I doubt you will be able to provide for her.”
“I have an assistant who is more than qualified to look after her if I cannot.”
“You’re just going to thrust Katherine into the hands of some assistant?” Gregory lifted an eyebrow.
Tony gritted his teeth. “No, I will not. I am at home most of the day, and when I am not, Stark Industries, which I remind you I am the owner and CEO of, is more than childproof should there be a time when she needs to accompany me. After all, we do have idiots coming into the building each day.”
Gregory visibly bristled. Before he could open his mouth again, Tony held his hand up.
“I’m done talking. I will be taking Katherine in, as was asked of me by both Oscar and Tiffany. You can take me to court over it, but you will find out very quickly that not only do I have her parent’s wishes and the law on my side, but I also have the most skilled attorneys in the nation at my disposal. I would not press my luck if I were you.”
Gregory’s face twisted in a very unpleasant manner, and Tony rolled his eyes.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a child I need to retrieve. After all, I am now her legal guardian.” Tony clapped his hand on Gregory’s shoulder as he passed, making his way over to where Katherine was standing.
When he was close enough, he crouched down to her level.
Katherine was still staring at the soft dirt that covered her parent’s graves, though her face was surprisingly without tears.
“Hello, kitty cat,” Tony said, trying his best to not be too loud.
Katherine’s head jerked, swinging to the side to look at him, her brows coming together in confusion.
An odd sense of emotion struck him. He knew that he wasn’t the most available person, but surely he visited her often enough that a young child would still remember.
Didn’t he?
“Do you remember me?”
She just pursed her lips.
“I’m Tony, your Mommy and Daddy’s friend. I took care of you last Spring while they were gone for work, and I gave you the tinker tools set.”
The woman on the other side of Katherine shifted. The quick glance he gave her told him that she was simply watching the exchange with interest.
Katherine frowned in thought, but quite suddenly, her face broke into a grin and she nodded quickly. “You helped me light a bulb with a tater!”
“Yes, I did.” Tony chuckled, before sucking in a deep breath. “Kitty, when you were really small, I promised your Mommy and Daddy that I’d look after you if something happened to them.”
Her eyebrows furrowed. “I’m going with you?” She asked, her voice a lot quieter than a second ago.
Not that he could really blame her.
Tony nodded. “I’m going to take care of you now, since your parents can’t. And we can make lots of electricity with potatoes and lemons.”
Katherine grinned. “Okay.”
“Mister Stark-” her aunt started, only to stop when he lifted a hand up.
“It’s in the will,” he stood up, “I will not turn my back on her. If you have any grievances, take it up with the lawyers,”
“That wasn’t what I was going to say,” she gave him a small grin, and Tony was surprised with how young she looked, “but I am glad to see that you’re willing to dedicate yourself to Katherine. That being said, if there is any way that I can help with the adjustment, please let me know,”
His brows furrowed.
“I’m Tiff’s sister. I probably would have gotten guardianship of Katherine instead of you, if I were old enough,”
“How old are you?”
“Seventeen come March.”
That explained why she looked so young. “You’re Stephanie?”
“The one and only,” She handed him a piece of paper. “That’s my phone number, but try to keep from calling between 8 and 3. I’ve got school,”
Tony swallowed. “Thanks, I’ll try to keep that in mind,”
Stephanie smiled again, and knelt in front of Katherine, where they had a hushed conversation.
Tony looked at the paper, the girl’s penmanship seemed to be rushed, before folding it and stuffing it into his pant pocket.
*~*~*
Katherine’s mood didn’t improve after they made it back to Malibu, which Tony expected, and tried to plan accordingly.
He anticipated some anxiety, as she was in a newer environment, so he’d taken a few weeks off from Stark Industries. His assistant, Pepper Potts, kept him up-to-date on some matters and brought the occasional file for him to look over, but he couldn’t quite bring himself to stop working in the lab. And considering it wasn’t the safest place in the world, he planned on working around her. What he didn’t expect, though, was that she refused to lose sight of him.
He wasn’t a stranger to separation anxiety - he had it himself when he was young, and still seemed to struggle with handling it. However, he didn’t anticipate for it to become near all-consuming. She didn’t want to be left alone in the kitchen while Tony went into the pantry to grab a loaf of bread, didn’t want to be left in the bedroom while Tony was in the walk-in closet, didn’t leave Tony alone while he was in the shower (which was by far the most uncomfortable thing about this), and she absolutely refused to sleep on her own.
Which, considering he had to lay down according to her schedule (and eventually falling asleep himself because one could stare at the ceiling for so long before getting bored to sleep), his sleep schedule improved significantly. JARVIS, despite only recently being tasked with keeping tabs on his general health, seemed quite pleased with the adjustment.
However, when Katherine was asleep during the day, he’d make his way down to there to work on restoring one of the car frames he purchased before the funeral or sketch a diagram for one of the new guns or missiles for a military demonstration, and not thirty minutes later JARVIS was telling him that Katherine was calling for him.
Almost every time Tony went up to her, she was crying desperately and clung to him when she spotted him.
His work started piling up dangerously high - and add on the fact that Obediah called more than once to scold him over his lack of responsibility - which had aggravated him to the point where Tony bit the bullet and put a child-proof play area in the safest section of the lab so she could see him while he worked.
Eventually, Pepper suggested taking Katherine to a child psychologist, which Tony reluctantly agreed to. He didn’t particularly like psychologists, but he wasn’t able to keep Katherine with him at all times. Not only did his work really not allow for it despite his efforts to make it otherwise - especially when he started going back to the company building - but she was going to be going to school soon. If they couldn’t get the anxiety under control, then everyone involved was going to be in for a rough ride.
The first psychologist came with high praise from one of Rhodey’s coworkers (coworkers? Co-Piolets? Special force air force buddies? Tony had no idea), though she gave Tony the willies and he was not about to force Katherine through an hour-long session with her. The second came at the recommendation of Pepper, and he was a bit better, but the third, a fifty-something-year-old woman, Katherine really liked.
It took a few visits, but soon Tony was able to observe from a chair by the desk, instead of sitting on the floor with Katherine on his lap.
*~*~*
The first Christmas was the most festive Tony could ever remember. He and Katherine made a weekend of it and hit the hobby stores for decoration, hardware stores for lights and garlands, and he let her choose the perfect tree. They decorated the beach house with angels, reindeer, garlands, wreaths, and Dr. Suess’ The Grinch.
Why there were Grinch decorations Tony had no idea, but Katherine liked them so in the cart they went.
The fake snow he placed near the fireplace seemed comically out of place with the large window nearby that showed off the private beach and pure blue ocean outside.
In the attempt to keep things normal for her, he kept a steady stream of Christmas Carols floating through the speakers (Oscar’s favorite season was Christmas, and was listening to carols near-constantly immediately after Halloween, the heathen).
More than once he caught her swaying to the rhythm of one of those pieces from that Nutcracker ballet, which made him decide that a visit to see the ballet was in order, as much as he thought he would be asleep before the curtain rose.
But Katherine would like it.
Hopefully.
*~*~*
Tony might have gone a little overboard on Christmas Morning.
He put Katherine to bed early, waited an hour to make sure she was asleep, and proceeded to stay up the rest of the night, carefully wrapping each present and tying it with a bow. He would have done it sooner, though Katherine clearly decided that her new favorite game was hide-and-seek but without the hiding, and he was terrified that she’d find the wrapped presents. Instead, he kept them at Happy’s apartment, and when Happy came by today, he brought the presents with him.
He didn’t want to start a pot of coffee in case Katherine developed super-hearing, so when he started feeling the effects of fatigue, he strategically placed each gift under the tree, each pile more complex than the next in order to keep himself occupied while doing the mind-numbing task of wrap, tape, and tie. He mindlessly snacked on carrots she laid out for the reindeer and the cookies Katherine so carefully decorated for Santa to enjoy when he arrived, though was careful to leave one of the cookies half-eaten for Katherine to see in the morning.
He considered trying to convince her Santa actually wanted chicken tacos and beer, but decided against it in case she wanted to try the beer herself to make sure it was good enough for Santa.
Once the wrapping was complete, he crept down to the basement garage, opened the door of the car that Happy used to buy an obnoxious amount of topsoil and straw, and started lugging them up to the living room.
He brainstormed ideas with Pepper, Happy, and Rhodey in preparation for the big day a few weeks before, and Pepper had mentioned in passing that her father always did extravagant efforts to make each Christmas special, as they didn’t have much growing up. Instead of flashy, expensive toys that broke within two months like Tony and Rhodey received, her father made Christmas an experience - a core memory, as Happy called it.
And Tony was going to do his best to recreate it for Katherine.
Dampening some of the topsoil, he pulled on a pair of too-big boots, stepped into the soil, and planted footprints from the fireplace to the tree and back. He scattered the soil, creating large piles and smoothing it out, before sticking the leg of a deer decoy to create reindeer footprints - he even went as far as to scatter a bit of the topsoil over the presents and smeared some on the tree.
Next came the straw, which he scattered everywhere. In the fireplace, on the rug that was probably going to be ruined from dirt stains, between the cushions of the couches, and in amongst the presents.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw movement.
Heart in his throat, Tony froze. Katherine could absolutely not be awake! He was not going to ruin the spirit of Christmas for a three-year-old! He refused to do it! Scambling for a suitable lie that would preserve her innocence and explain what he was doing, he nearly jumped out of his skin when there was a crash.
Snapping his head to the sound, he paused.
It was a nutcracker. One that was supposed to be wrapped for Katherine, but must have slipped between pillows. And while he was rearranging the cushions for the straw, it must have come loose before falling to the floor.
He blinked, before a wide grin appeared. Tiffany loved nutcrackers and went into great detail about how special they were during Christmastime, and Tony wanted it to be a reminder for Katherine that even if her parents were gone, they were always watching over her.
The fact that nutcrackers were traditionally considered to be generators of good luck and protectors against bad spirits during the holiday season was just an added bonus.
It was an impulsive decision, but he grabbed the nutcracker, stamped his boots back into the soil, and trekked up to Katherine’s room.
Despite being sure the door wouldn’t creak while it opened, he still opened it painstakingly slowly. Once the gap was wide enough for him to slip through, Tony made his way to her, and slipped the nutcracker into her arms.
She was a relatively still sleeper, so he wasn’t very concerned about her wiggling and flopping, and risk breaking it.
Carefully walking out of the room (making sure to step firmly so the dirt would fall off his boots), he closed the door with a soft latch, before stomping back down to the living room to get rid of any evidence that would suggest he created the mess.
It was nearly 5 in the morning by the time he made it to bed, only to be awoken an hour later by a toddler jumping on him.
“Santa came! Santa came! He came into my room and gave me a nutcracker!” She screeched, shoving said nutcracker into his face, and causing him to go cross-eyed. “He left tracks, too! Come see, come see!”
Katherine grabbed his hand and tugged him towards the door. Tony groaned as he stood up, and stumbled out of the room, nearly falling onto his face as she tugged him harder towards her bedroom.
She squealed when the footprints came into view, and he couldn’t help but feel a bit proud that his last-minute decision worked so well.
He marveled at the tracks, poking at them and ‘predicting’ when they might have arrived (“Precisely midnight! Wow, he must have wonderful time-management skills - we should learn from him, shouldn’t we, kitty cat?”). Next, he was pulled to the living room, and he prepared to act very upset at the disarray of the room.
Hopefully all those trashy soap operas Rhodey liked in college would help him.
The living room came into view, and as Katherine gasped loudly, Tony sucked in a deep breath before starting his performance.
Katherine startled at the volume of his voice, before a bright grin showed on her face as Tony went around and pointed at each and every stain and straw, complaining that Santa had to learn to wrangle his reindeer or there would be a lot of trouble. Katherine started laughing - really belly laughing - when he made notice of the couch.
Rhodey came by a little while later, nearly dropping his tray of muffins when he saw the state of the room. Though as Katherine excitedly told him about her findings and pulled him to look at Santa’s footprints (Tony had a feeling there would be pictures taken of them before they were cleaned up), Rhodey gave him a thumbs-up.
He grinned, and collapsed onto the dirty couch.
Katherine’s reaction was well-worth the fatigue he felt. In fact, as he felt himself slip back to sleep, he decided that he was willing to do nearly anything to keep her grinning. No child should have so much misery in their life - and Tony was going to do his best to shelter her from any more that may come her way.
*~*~*
Tony choked. “You want me to what?”
Oscar grinned. “Be her godfather.”
“I’m not-”
“I don’t care. Tiff trusts you with her, and so do I.”
“But what about your family - or even Rhodey? Wouldn’t that be better?”
He shrugged. “Maybe. But I trust you, and my gut’s telling me you’ll keep her in safe hands.”
Tony’s brow furrowed. “I haven’t had a good example of taking care of kids,”
“Neither have I,” Oscar leaned against the glass of the hospital window, his newborn baby just on the other side. “But I’m willing to do my best. That’s all anyone can ask for, really,”
Tony looked at Katherine (he had no doubt her name was influenced by one of those books Tiffany read), tightly swaddled in a small pink blanket, and a knitted hat with what looked like bear ears.
He watched her for several moments longer, before letting out a deep sigh.
“I’ll accept,”
Oscar’s hand slapped his shoulder, gripping onto it. “I don’t think you’ll regret it,”
Katherine yawned, her hat slipping off her head a bit.
“I don’t think I will, either,”

Headcanon that when Peter accidentally calls Tony dad for the first time, he immediately freaks out over his slip-up (as usual) but Tony is running on like -20 hours of sleep and doesn’t even notice the mistake but he responds to it so suddenly Peter spirals into ANOTHER crisis because does that mean Tony thinks of Peter as his son, or did he just not hear him right? And now he doesn’t know how to bring it up without outing the fact that he wants Mr. Stark to be his dad
Peter: “Hey, dad?”
Peter, internally: Wait, shit shit! Why did I say that? I can’t call Mr. Stark DAD. That’s so creepy-
Tony, dead on his feet and hearing colors: “Yeah, Pete?”
Peter:
Peter, tearing up: “Um-”

Irondad fic ideas #155
Tony can be... a bit overbearing with his helicopter parent tendencies. To combat this, Peter sets up a small protocol with FRIDAY.
Any time Tony wants to do something paranoid or invasive, FRIDAY is to send him a helpful article first, with titles like "Excessive Surveillance Can Harm Adolescent Development, Study Finds" and "Why Teens Need Privacy From Their Parents"
Peter leaves the choice of articles up to FRIDAY, trusting her to send ones that fit the situation.
While this protocol does get Tony to reconsider some of his more... extreme impractical requests, in most cases it fails to change his mind. Being hands-off about Peter's safety is not something he can do -- not when he knows the kinds of dangers this particular kid could face.
He's grateful for the insight that the protocol has given him, though. So instead of removing it, he decides to add to it. He asks FRIDAY to make it a two-way street. Now, whenever Peter complains about one of Tony's safety protocols, FRIDAY will send an article to help him understand
However, Tony doesn't anticipate the kinds of articles FRIDAY will choose. While she continues to send Tony studies and editorials, to Peter she sends news reports from Tony's past
Peter's mad that Tony has put trackers in everything he owns? -- "Tony Stark Still Missing: Inside Month Three of the Harrowing Search"
Peter hates the constant health monitoring that FRIDAY does when he's in the tower? -- "Death Wish or Death Sentence? Stark Behavior Tied to Secret Illness that Almost Cost Him His Life"
It goes on and on. For every seemingly insane overreach, there's a story, an experience Tony is trying to protect Peter from.
They both still disagree about how much protection is too much, but at least they understand each other better now
