Sometimes a fever dream of an idea grabs you by the lapels and will not let you go until you paint it. That's what happened with this watercolour of Baba Yaga station here, an urban metro station standing on a pair of funky lil birb legs, under which the subway passes. Please imagine the lil guys on the platform got down there by way of an escalator or some stairs I didn't feel like painting. Just don't question the logistics tbh. Torontonians may recognise that Baba Yaga Station here is inspired by an entrance to the Line 1 platform at Spadina station, which indeed used to be someone's house, and was apparently enough of a significant building that they just... built a subway entrance directly into it. It's a weird, cool building that I love a lot, and I'm pretty sure the upper portion of the building is still a habitable home. Wacky!

The New Kipling station, which goes into service Friday, along with Kennedy station on the Bloor subway line, has 20 concrete arches giving it a distinctive roof-line and making it something of a landmark. 1980 [TPL Archives]

"A CIVIC STEAM SHOVEL'S BIG BITE," Toronto Star. June 10, 1912. Page 2.
---
If the big ten-storey Lumsden Building on Yonge street were extended upwards ten storeys more, the giant structure thus formed would be equal in size to the amount of earth which is being dug out of Carlaw avenue by this steam shovel. It is a huge "bite" which has to be taken about 50,000 cubic yards. As shown by the picture, the shovel is served by a civic "dinky" engine and cars. The outfit was moved to Carlaw avenue from Gerrard street the other day, and will chew its way through to Danforth avenue.. Its work on Carlaw avenue is made necessary by the construction of a subway there. The earth taken out by the shovel is being used to level up the streets of the district, notably Gerrard street. Morley avenue, Rhodes avenue and Danforth avenue. As the shovel is working in heavy blue clay, the bite to be taken is hard as well as large. It will take about three months to complete the job.
