Up for a Challenge?
I fell in love with the arts the day I was asked by a friend if I wanted to go to their dance studio’s Bring-A-Friend day. Coming home from that class and begging my mum to enroll me started my decade long career of dancing and gave me my first artistic outlet. Dance was the first way I learned to interpret nature without being surrounded by it.
Over the years I trained to preform routines which embodied the destruction of the “cave of wonders” from Aladdin, spooky forests, and my personal favourite, a Beyoncé mashup depicting a pack of lionesses hunting. The dances rarely reached 3 minutes in length but we spent months practicing to perfectly capture the feelings represented by these pieces so they would be translated to the audience. Although my love for dancing has evolved into dancing in my kitchen and yoga in my backyard, I will never forget the lessons of performing and interpretating I learned from dancing. These skills have helped me learn to perform for people and keep things interesting as an animal presenter while educating the public in order to get them to think beyond just how cute the animal I’m handing was. This let them begin to interpret and appreciate the animal in a new perspective.

My first experience of the combination of the arts and nature came when I was very young and my family took me to see a rendition of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” in a park amphitheatre. Did I have a passion for Shakespeare at a young age? No. Did I understand what they were saying? No, I don’t think I realized it was English until the second act. But I was captivated by the set designs, the costumes and most importantly the actors. The atmosphere of park sounds in an amphitheatre surrounded by trees held my attention and I’m doubtful this would have happened if I had been watching the play from inside a dusty old theatre.

When asking myself the question “who am I to interpret nature through art?” I find myself arriving at the same answer every time: A novice. I love art, especially painting, and always find myself inspired by the natural world. However, combining both of these passions often leads me to the moment of trepidation where I see something so beautiful in nature but have no idea how to translate it onto the plank page before me. If you can relate to these feelings of anxiety when you don’t know where to start a painting and want a way to interpret nature in a new way, then I have a challenge for you! Like many of you, I’m sure this quarantine has kept you indoors a little too long and has you itching for a new activity, so I encourage you to try my Paint Night Challenge!
The Challenge:
· Choose a paint tutorial video of something from nature that inspires you
· Grab your favourite drinks, snacks and art supplies
· Put on a good movie or music for background
· Enjoy painting something you didn’t think you could!
Good luck and happy painting everyone!
