Summary: Joe (Michael Sheen) was just released from a mental hospital but his foster parents wont take him back home. Desperate and having nowhere to go he attemps to commit suicide but is saved last minute by Sandor (Paul Rhys). Joe is now devoted to his saviour, who uses this to his advantage by further manipulating Joe up to the point where he aggrees to help kidnap a young woman.

Starting off with a punch in the gut (litterally)

Found this a bit uncomfortable to watch. Not necessarily because its bad, but because is portrays a very abusive relationship between Sandor and Joe. It’s proper fucked up, so that is kinda the point. Joe is almost obsessed with Sandor, constantly excusing his horrible behaviour and actions. You very much believe that Joe would do anything for him. It’s genuinely scary to watch.

Sandor saves Joe

After they successfully kidnap the young woman they where after it turns out Sandor isn’t after a ransom, but is in love with her and wants to free her from her (as he thinks) miserable life. She rejects him which he, after some drama, accepts. However Sandor ends up killing himself the same way Joe tried to earlier, by throwing himself in front of a train. And because he’s a total bastard he does it right in front of Joe. (poor guy can’t catch a break)

Throughout the series are short clips of Joe explaining the events in hindsight This shows a very different aspect of the character it’s almost jarring. But in a good way. You very much get the sense that this whole story scarred him even further, but he also seems more mature and reflected. In the end we see that he might be talking to a therapist (maybe even in a prison?) so I like to think that at some point in his life he manages to set himself free from that past trauma. “Tilly said Sandor was bananas, off the wall, after lunch…there seem to be a lot of words for mad. I told her never to say it. He wasn’t mad, he was just in pain…I know all about that, don’t I?” - fucking shivers down my spine The way he delivered that line, fucking genius. If you dont wanna watch the whole series, watch this one scene it’s so good. (it’s somewhat at the 44 minute mark of episode three)

The performances of the lead actors are way more convincing than I expected, it’s the most interesting part of the whole series imo. Joe starts off already broken and by the end he’s absolutely fucked up. He gets completely corrupted by his saviour to the point of kinda assuming his persona after Sandor died. Thats a pretty interesting dynamic and it left me feeling a bit icky afterwards.

I havent read the book but even with the great performances of the actors something about the story didnt quite capture me. Like the suspense was built up, but the payoff wasnt quite there. Maybe the stakes arent high enough? Idk something about the overall story couldve been pushed a bit more…

Anyway idk if this was Michaels very first time acting in front of a camera, but considering this was very early in his career he did an exeptionally good job. Michael has this way of completely disappearing in his characters its amazing to watch. And it blows my mind that he could do this so well already when he was just like 24 I think?

His acting combined with Paul Rhys gives a very convincing dynamic. If it wasn’t for them this would’ve been an absolute bore.

Would I recommend watching this? Maybe, If you don’t have a problem going through a few unconfortable scenes and a overall mediocre story. If you absolutely want to see Michael play a very broken, fucked up young man, sure! There’s some good acting in it so at least it isnt boring. Just prepare for violence and some uncomfy stuff.

Just finished what I'm pretty sure was the series finale of ua (idk hbomax doesn't have evrything) and it was kind of a let down. Half the time felt like vilgax was just standing around waiting for something to happen, like they couldn't have had him escape for a bit and then come back?

The little end flashback part was kinda cool tho, even if the build up to it came out of nowhere. Also didn't really like that diagon was just absorbed by vilgax felt like a cop out.

I have a few criticisms but like honestly solid show.

Its kinda like a rehashing king arthur and merlin and all that. But like in a real creative way. And honestly the way its described on netflix isn't very good.

MILD SPOILERS below. Mostly in the criticisms i have for the characters. So just like ignore that part it will be marked.

Meet our protagonist! Her name is Nimue! Shes a Fae, a decent fighter and has a spooky secret that alienates her from her clan.

Criticism:

Honestly as a character I have no real problem with Nimue, shes really cool, very stubborn and has a strong sense of identity, she makes her own choices but also relies on her two friends whom I will talk about later.

I suppose one thing to be said is... I think theres a lot of allusions to real life colonization that they couldve made the protagonist non-white "human-passing" woman. But thats just my opinion

Arthur! He's the deuteragonist of this lovely show. Honestly I love Arthur he starts out a bit of a coward, a mercenary living proverbial paycheck to paycheck paying off debt and a bit full of himself. And he grows into man confident in his own abilities and who protects those who share a similar cause. Hes just GOT A GOOD HEART AT HIS CORE AND HES GONE THROUGH A LOT AND HE DESERVES BETTER OKAY!!

Criticism:

I like the path Arthur went on this season. This is a role a black man normally wouldnt get a chance to play. At least i believe that to be true. So I'm really glad he is black!! No real criticism excwpt he starts out a little insufferable but he truly grows on you!

Okay i know this one may look bad but i promise this criticism will be spoiler free so you can read it and see why the criticism is so long here. I love Kaze a lot and I hope they do more growing her character in the next season.

Criticism

Very dissapointed yet again, this is the only picture of her. Kaze is a secondary character and i have a lot to say about her. Shes kinda like the black best friend without the friend part and sorting through all of nimues emotional baggage about the choices she must make.

Kaze is one of the few dark skinnned characters to get lines at all. She believes in Nimues abilities and advises her to step up which she does. Then kaze kinda fades to the background doing cool fight moves and killing bad guys for a few shots. Dont get me wrong these scenes are important for her character. But they also seem a little hollow. I do have hope for the next season.

Oh Merlin.... I like him a lot! Hes not really a good guy. Hes lived many lives, worn many hats. Seen loved ones die, hes killed, hes lied, and hes stolen. Hes a nasty self serving chaotic man. But damn does he try. Arthyr is still my favourite character though.

I’m sorry if I sounds dumb but I couldn’t finish the last two eps it hurt so much - is this the last season w this group of paladins???? Who tf is gonna go after haggar or whatevs????? Are they really gonna throw those weak ass garrison characters on us in one season when they can’t even develop their original characters after 7 seasons?

sorry for saying that it’s the last with this group of paladins!! i couldve sworn that i read it somewhere but it honestly could’ve just meant that we now have a whole bunch of new characters who are sticking around for Real this time (like commander holt, james, veronica, so on and so forth) rather than for an episode or two. 

and pls dont watch those last two eps. i found myself falling asleep and feeling sick to my stomach during the whole thing. they dont even have the paladins together at the end of the season............they’re all separated and off doing different things which gives me totally different vibes than usual. like i said earlier its not “voltron” anymore, if that makes sense. its just. bad.

and thats what im so mad about?? what even HAPPENED to haggar?? its like they throw a villain at you, forget about them, and then create a new villain without ending the story of the last one. we got sendak in 90% of season 7 right? the thing you didnt see was that RIGHT AFTER they defeated him, there was a new villain (im talking 2 seconds after sendak died) that took his place. and to make it worse, this villain was an altean so its like. 

are we just gonna forget about haggar and lotor or? because now we only have one season left and you’re telling me we have to wrap all of that up in 13 episodes.................... yeah gl w that

it’s really a tough one, basing it on the book version of everyone……..theyre really kind of similar roles….theyre both sending uninformed english schoolchildren essentially from another world to take care of problems they couldve stepped in and handled themselves………… my dumbledore hate is really strong, aslan is just frustrating but you can kind of wave it off because part of his lore is that everyone has just accepted he has his own bullshit way of doing things that involves waiting for things to get really shitty before he bothers showing up after giving 10yr olds a crack at it first, and then leaving before anythings really resolved. but dumbledore doesnt deserve any of his reputation and he also uses that reputation to solve problems he created while pretending he totally didnt create those problems and has been so helpful this whole time with his superknowledge about everything thats going on, what do you mean i never really helped anyone if it wasnt convenient for me!!! he sucks

aslan also throws children to the wolves at random but none of them ever died of it. also, he’s generally just kind of rude and unhelpful to them and everyone else when it would be a lot easier to be a little friendlier and more informative. but thats part of his thing, whereas dumbledore is supposed to be accessible and yet never helps any students ever and makes crap decisions re their welfare. he’s shittier. aslan at least handles the boss battles. and aslan couldve intervened earlier but he didnt ever really…cause the rise of a supervillian directly through his own negligence. and sure aslan is lion god but dumbledore is supposed to be the most powerful wizard alive, which is close enough to that in a practical sense.

i’ll still allow that its debatable but imo dumbledore is crappier

But Babylon at least had bronze weapons, the best the aztecs could offer were axes with volcanic glass blades.

The aztecs couldve resisted the spanish though, but their culture and reaction to the invading spanish fucked them royally, as they saw they were literally a force of their god

and thats not even unique to the americans, the europeans and christians of the old world reacted the same way when 200 years earlier, a similarly, insanely advanced and merciless empire bound for conquest rolled out of the superior society basket of china and swiftly brought ruin to everyone else because they found it their religious destiny to spread their domain over the world. The muslim world was so THOROUGHLY ravaged at the height of it’s own golden era that most historians believe it still hasn’t recovered.

the white man’s world of Europe was literally 10 years away from being reduced to the same fate north america had been, when it’s best armies - the largest fielded since the roman empire - were completely smashed in poland and hungry as they desperately tried to fight back subotai’s horde. The christians were certain these were the endtimes because the tatars, or rather, the mongols were unstoppable. They reacted as such, in disarray and in total fear and capitulation.

except these mongol army decided at the last minute to turn around and ENTIRELY return to mongolia because the great khan died and everyone was obliged to be present for the new khan’s ascent to power. That was the literal 1 in a million chance that saved western europe. The total apocalyptic wasteland in the middle east (that europe surely wouldve experienced too) left by the mongols helped pave the way for western europeans to spread their influence, now suddenly aware of and curious to what lay beyond their known universe now that a massively powerful, advanced society exploded out of the far fringes of that and nearly destroyed them. The age of exploration began.

like we are living in the alternate history timeline where europe achieved dominance rather than asia, particularly because of a single, freak, sudden death.

it would be like if hernando cortez arrived at the fringes of mexico and began his conquest of the aztecs and then, suddenly, died, and the expedition returned to the carribean and sailed back to spain. The aztecs suddenly, aware of what NEARLY wiped them out, begin to seek abroad and understand a broader world that nearly wiped them out.

id like to believe most alternate universes of human history are where europe was conquered by asia. Imagine if western europe were as chronically impoverished as eastern europe and culturally influenced by chinese culture (mongols would go on to assimilate into settled chinese societal norms)

but yea, if not yuro poors, the asian societies wouldve rolled into and ravaged the new world. yuropoors got a lucky break and were spared the least scathed group of people from the mongol wave.

Send Me a Character: Keith Kogane

im sorry i wrote too much probably i just…really like keith…

first impression: Space Nico di Angelo. basically a moody, angry, lonely outsider who didnt need anybody and was like an antihero. in general i thought he was gonna be like really angsty and sad cause thats what all the fanart of him seemed to be. this was also back when just season one was out, and i thought his whole story arc was about being an alien because, again, fanart. 

impression now: still space nico di angelo?? i didnt expect he’d be so caring though, i loved that! like, keith is a loner, but its not cause he wants to be. people just keep abandoning him/getting abducted by aliens and he tries his damnest to keep people together every time he does find a new family. hes such a team player, he just?? loves his team so much?? hes the only one who signs up for that suicide mission, he fights zarkon solo for shiro, and even though it would kill him to lose the team he runs off so he doesnt put anyone else in danger and i just,,, have a lot of feelings about keith. and i really like how, even though hes touch averse, he still craves intimacy and you can especially see it in how open he is with the little touches between him and shiro. he’s also not an angry person i think, hes just been dealt all these bad hands. keith strikes me as someone who couldve been a quiet, but honestly easily content and mild mannered sort of person. he seems more gentle by nature, but you are what the world makes you i guess 

favorite moment: the part in blade of marmora when he has the hallucination about seeing shiro–and shiro is literally right there watching. i went through all of season 2 the night it came out and by that point it was like 5 am and i had to stop and wonder if i had fallen asleep caus no way did someone just say shiro was the person keith “most desperately wants to see” i was so damn happy. it also made keith’s fear of losing shiro a lot more visceral, and honestly watching it for me is just painful. seeing shiro and red both lash out and ready to take down everyone in the base to save keith was also amazing. my favorite episode 

idea for a story: i was doodling something for this earlier so–little mermaid-ish type au where the reason keith doesnt look galra is cause he made a deal with haggar to get his human form so he could go back to earth with the Champion

unpopular opinion: personally i dont think he’s romantically interested in lance. i also think he and lance would have actually been a lot closer by now if lance wasnt actively pushing him away, which is a shame. in season 2 especially you see the rivalry is more one sided and keith really is trying to make things work. not that i dislike lance for it or anything, but i think his issues with keith are about himself more than keith and as soon as he realizes that things will get a lot better for them both 

favorite relationship: i feel like this doesnt even need to be said lmao but sheith definitely sheith. i felt like really conflicted about it at first though cause even when keith is first introduced and rushes in to save shiro i was feeling it but..uh…i was totally dead convinced shiro was a sleeper agent thatd betray everyone lmao. once i came around though i loved everything about their relationship. their history, the mission failure, keith’s time in the desert and the way his voice breaks when he speaks to shiro in that soft gentle tone, the way theyre always so honest and vulnerable with each other, the way shiro sees him as a leader, all the parallels thematically, its just,,, i really like their character development a lot alright 

favorite headcannon: i firmly believe keith is a druid in all honesty and even if he isn’t id still insist caus it just makes too much sense to me lmao. i also really like trans keith and ace keith

If you stand on the southernmost point on the tip of land a bit east of the bridge, you will fight monsters you would normally fight later. Once Ivan gets 85 HP, it becomes much easier. (Most monsters you find in this spot like 4 or 5 types, will have Normal attacks that hit on average between 45-55 damage with mostly all heavy attacks between 70-89 damage). It is highly recommended to save after each successful battle. This earns a great amount of EXP and coins this early in the game.

serren gets beat up by Endlyn (with her ghost-punchin’ arm) and genuinely believes shes gonna be totally dead because at this point, she’s vaguely aware of the whole ‘kiss to come back’ thing (not sure from where) and shes like ‘fuck fuck fuck FUCK IM A GHOST’ and probably spends her last moments desperately reaching for Endlyn even though she knows thats.... pretty pointless actually. she’s desperate, yknow.

then, poof, she jolts awake in her tower in derse. its incredibly confusing all around. theres probably noone on derse to actually help her make sense of the situation either... or any way for her to leave.......... uh. thats actually an issue. though i suppose she should have a computer in her room (given jade did, right) so she could possibly contact someone. not sure how theyd help, exactly. this is the issue. she’d be essentially stranded on derse until one of the other derse dreamers - Endlyn, Dahnte, and Tsitas - wakes up and offers to fly her home. the only candidate for that is Tsitas. Dahnte would refuse unless he could possibly wrangle a favour out of it, though if Serren mentioned shed ‘visited his hive’ as a ghost he’d do it immediately. he hates ghosts. this boy is terrified of ghosts.

unless someones.... god tier? which could work. my candidate is Lyndel or Junzha. Having Junzha do it seems like overkill considering he is already responsible for Serren not being dead (and thus responsible for her existing as a ghost, because he woke up her dream self way fucking early) so having him also ‘save’ her by picking her up seems too much. since Lyndel’s role in the slightly rewritten sage of Rhiana Tasiai has her relegated to buying serren a laptop, having her ascend reasonably early and then going to collect Serren from derse seems... fair enough. and she’s a doom player, so dying way early on seems completely justifiable. have her die early on as a sort of ‘sacrifice’ that allows the players of the session to know that in this new world, death isn’t the finale. Which gives Serren a lot of hope, which can then be briefly crushed when Endlyn accidentally finds out she exists and beats the crap out of her. i think that works?

which then begs the question of how Lyndel dies. it’d have to be a quest bed death in order for it to work properly whiiiiichhh begs a lot of questions, to be honest. Zekari could help be a part of that, perhaps accidentally self fulfilling by seeing her death in the clouds (for those keeping score [me] thats the second time hes seen a death in the clouds) and deciding to forewarn her, resulting in her deciding to do a sweep of the area around her home to ensure its safe. resulting in her getting blindsided and totaaaaaled. in a big ol pyre-looking mfucker. nice. though if she’s a Page and we’re going Active Serve on this bitch.... imma have to reread the thing, hold up. if she’s a page, arguably she should be forcing (accident or otherwise) someone to serve her doom - to act as the sacrificial pony upon which the session new understanding of death can be built off. whose the candidate for that? Junzha, probably. he’s not all that strong, his telekinesis isnt even very powerful and in fact pales in comparison to his two other psychic friends (serren has pretty decent telepathy and zekari is a gold blood telekinetic with a more versatile set, while junzha can only manipulate momentum and not direction). so him accidentally dying earlier, as a result of something Lyndel told him to do, allows him to do all the shit. and it works really well because their classes mesh together REALLY well here, and in fact would manifest in similar ways. as Junzha is Knight of Life, and so being killed and brought back to life sorta fits that mold - passively serving (giving, whatever) life to the session, with Lyndel actively giving death to the session by showing them how it can be used. they fit together here. so, ok, Junzha dies early on as a complete accident that Lyndel takes the responsibility for. She’s the one who called him to her planet or whatever, she put him in that place, she accepts her place, and finding out he survived after she kissed him is literally one of the best things she’d heard all day. then she allows Zekari to serve her Doom later when she doesn’t cut off a conversation with him (aka she was busy but stopped for her when she couldve ignored it) and to tell her where she should go in order to get herself killed (that wasnt his intent - its a Page thing. it also ties into him being a Bard, though not into his aspect). serves doom to the session by again showing Good Death and shit. yeehaw.

ok. junzha dies early. whiiiich would then strand him on skaia????? Zekari IS on Skaia though, and has been awake for ages, so its wholly possible for Zekari to, if convinced to fucking go to bed (you dumbass) to give Junzha a lift. way easier than convincing The Crew to do the same thing on Derse, due to the shenanigans involved in those folk.

yeaaassss...... i think that works. Junzha dies early in an accident that Lyndel caused (by accident, she didn plan this), Lyndel is later killed in her quest cocoon (or Pyre, really, thats what her world is Full of) and ascends, which allows her to then collect Serren after Serren gets the absolute shit kicked out of her by an enraged Endlyn, who was angry that Serren had tricked her by pretending to be a Cobalt (again, Endlyn is kinda weird about this shit, and if Serren were a more manipulative person and had done it deliberately to earn favours, like.... endlyn’d be right to be miffed).

admittedly Junzha dying because of Lyndel doesn’t have any real place in the Ancestral Karmic Cycle but its an accident, so its not a huge deal. i dont think Junzha can even die as part of that cycle..... he could kill Tsitas, but thats about it. and there are a good chunk f folk who would kill Tsitas. so its literally whatever. he’s a Life player, he’s not going around killing his friends, yknow.
