Good Source for Trans Monkey King Headcanon

While Sun Wukong is not historically or canonically transgender, I wholeheartedly support anyone with a headcanon portraying him as such. A great example of spiritual gender transition from Buddhist scripture that could serve as a basis for your headcanon is the “Dragon Girl” (Longnu, 龍女) from chapter 12 of the Lotus Sutra (Miaofa lianhua jing, 妙法蓮華經; a.k.a. Fahua jing, 法華經, c. 3rd-century).

She is first introduced to an assembly of Buddhist deities as the eight-year old daughter of the Dragon King Sāgara (Suojieluo longwang, 娑竭羅龍王) and one of an unfathomable number of dragonfolk enlightened by the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī’s (Wenshu shili, 文殊師利) lessons on the Lotus Sutra. Her teacher describes her as a great student prodigy with a deep knowledge of Buddhist Law, as well as having many advanced spiritual achievements. But this upsets some among the assembly because the notion of a young girl approaching Buddhahood so quickly flies in the face of convention, which normally calls for untold aeons of severe austerities before one can achieve awakening. Her accomplishments are called into question at first, but everyone is appeased when she offers a priceless jewel to the Buddha, and he quickly accepts it as a symbolic gesture. Then:

The girl said [to the assembly], “Employ your supernatural powers and watch me attain Buddhahood. It will be even quicker than that!” At that time the members of the assembly all saw the dragon girl in the space of an instant change into a man (emphasis added) and carry out all the practices of a bodhisattva, immediately proceeding to the spotless World of the south, taking a seat on a jeweled lotus, and attaining impartial and correct enlightenment. With the thirty-two features and the eighty characteristics [of a Buddha], he expounded the wonderful Law for all living beings everywhere in the ten directions (Watson, 1993, p. 188). HEADCANON FOR MONKIE KID

I’ve been a little nervous to do this one but I need to get it out of my head. However, feel free to correct me if I say anything that’s incorrect.

Monkey king is trans

Okay let’s start with the fact that monkey troops are usually matriarchal (or at least Rhesus macaques, which is the species that monkey king resembles, are matriarchal) meaning it would be odd for the troop to make a male their leader. Furthermore I’ve heard people talk about how the title Wukong is officially given by the monkeys is gender neutral (sadly, I don’t speak mandarin or cantonese so I can’t confirm or deny this but antidotefortheawkward posted about it: click here to read it)

Second, Wukong learns transformation by the immortal Taoist so technically throughout the journey he could have transformed himself to look more masculine (also I doubt people would be able to tell the difference between a born female or male demon monkey. I also slightly headcanon that Wukong didn’t understand human concept of gender and Subodhi was the first to explain it to him (“WAIT! So humans treat females as weak?”, “sadly yes”, “but that makes no sense… you’d fear anyone if they were holding a weapon to you, just because their female doesn’t mean they can’t kill you!”). It’s also during this time that I think Wukong starts to transition with the help of magic.

We’re going to skip a couple chapters to when Wukong gets a position in heaven. His first position is Bow Ma Wen and I believe this is because of the Chinese tradition of raising monkeys in stables. (P.s antidotefortheawkward also talks about this). From what I’ve managed to gather the monkeys were believed to keep the horses active and therefore healthy. (I guess Warning for the rest of this paragraph because it’s going to be talking about menstruation) However, they usually used female monkeys because the blood produced from their periods and childbirth when added to the horses food was thought to stave off disease. Here’s an article I read on the matter.

The second position given to Wukong is protector of the immortal peaches. I believe it was a position specifically made for Wukong but I find it interesting that the only other people usually in the orchard of immortal peaches are the peach maidens. Personally I find it interesting that heaven (which is often shown to be very close minded throughout the novel) puts Wukong with a group of women, especially when in Chinese mythology male monkeys are often see seducing woman. So I hypothesise that heaven put Wukong in an orchard full of women because they believed Wukong was one too (I am aware that ancient china has examples of same-sex love and that it was common but I think heaven was trying to ‘stop Wukong from seducing the men of heaven’).

Now journey to the west has a lot of aspects that make it appealing to the modern day audience (the pilgrims being pro-choice is one example that I am here for), however, I doubt the writer wrote Wukong as trans.

It’s a nice headcanon thought that I like to imagine while watching lmk or when writing.

How the Straw Hats react when Sanji (Sanju?) comes back with her gender thoroughly transed:

Luffy: Does NOT notice. Not in a million years. At some point Sanji asks him if he noticed something fucking different. He frowns for a long moment and declares "Sanji looks happier".

Zoro: Notices SOMETHING. Stares a lot. Glares, one might stay. Looks very hard. Something about her is different. All his memories of her until now change the moment he sees her and he forgets entirely she hasn't always looked like that. Perona tried very hard to squeeze half a fashion sense into his brain (so did Mihauk honestly) and so what he finds is that this shirt is definitely new, and that Sanji didn't use to tie her hair. Caught staring he deadpans "Nice braid." expecting a fight but Sanji stands startled, she hadn't thought he'd be so classy about it.

Nami: "Now that you have your own boobs you can stop fixating on mine." She offers to take Sanji shopping. As a paid shopping assistant. Her fares are outrageous but she cuts her many great deals.

Usopp: The least normal about it because human bodies don't work like that and the weirdness of this crew is still growing. Relaxes when he hears about Ivankov's powers.

Chopper: Does NOT notice. He forgets human gender characteristics if they aren't medically relevant. He has to be told that Sanji is a woman. He asks what difference it makes and he gets extremely worried when he's told that Sanju will now sleep in the women's quarters. Will she die of blood loss in her sleep?

Robin: Sanji fusses over her like she usually does, asks her if she likes her new look, and with a soft smile Robin says, like she told Franky "you haven't changed at all".

Franky: So. Very. Emotional. Can never shut up about how brave and SUPER Sanju is for this. Calls her SISTER every time he sees her and Sanju thinks he's forcing it but Franky is just teary-eyed and thrilled to call her sister.

Brook: Politely requests to see her panties. Is kicked in the face he doesn't have. Writes a song called "She's not who he used to be" with puns such as San-judas, Coq/Chick/Kitchen/Cook, she's a woman/she don't woo men/she, who? my Sanju-san-chan, nii-ju-sai-ma'm, she's not playing around, she won't even show me her - Saaaaan-juuuuu-daaaas!

All my design thoughts went out the window I really should’ve written them down 😭 but uuuuuh; Nami’s hair was actually inspired by another artist’s redesign I saw. I used psychedelic soul as my main inspo for Brook even tho I havent even met the guy yet to know if it really fits him or not, I was mostly messing around anyway. But hes a goofy guy from what I know so I think this get up/base for his future fits work fine even if psychedelic soul doesnt. Also his shirt in the time skip is supposed to be ripped up into a crop top. Idk. I just think hed like to show off his midriff if he still had one.

NOW FRANK I HAD SO MUCH FUN AND SO MUCH DIFFICULTY WITH BUT THE END RESULT WAS DEFINITELY WORTH IT. I used 2009’s Transformers animated as style reference/inspo because it really does fit the vibes he gives off. I got rid of the bright light green palms in exchange for some subtle floral because 1) I couldn’t figure out how to make it work with the brushes I had downloaded + didnt have time to make my own between work, 2) It made him look too cluttered and drove the focus away from his face. This isnt entirely clear, which Im fine with, but TS Robin and Franky have little matching bits in their designs because i thought itd be cute???? Sue me lmao
