One thing I think about a lot is that how omegaverse is a sort of meta-setting that can and has been applied to many different fandoms, right?

So there's "omegaverse supernatural" (because that's where it started) and "omegaverse star trek" and "omegaverse Frasier" and "omegaverse Batman" and "omegaverse US presidents".

You can basically easily apply it to any fandom with lots of men in it, which turns out to be most of them. (and you can apply it to the rare female-majority fandoms with a bit of extra work).

But the interesting thing to me is that omegaverse depends on characters having subgenders: alpha/beta/omega are effectively gender roles on top of the regular male/female ones, but they're ones not specified in the original fiction, right? (I mean, not usually).

So like, you can watch NewsRadio and it makes it pretty clear Dave is a man, but it never specifies if he's an alpha or omega, because why would it? Also, why is my go-to example of a random sitcom one from 1995?

Anyway. So you've got a bunch of characters with canonical genders (not that that has ever stopped fans from headcanoning them as different! Dave is a trans man, Lisa is a trans woman, and Bill? All Phil Hartman characters are closeted trans women, so jot that down), but you don't have canonical subgenders.

So fans have to decide which characters in a fiction are alphas and omegas and so on. They tend to be pretty consistent for most characters, actually.

But the part that interests me despite not really reading omegaverse stuff is just those headcanons.

Like, I can take a show I know well, like say Star Trek: The Next Generation, and find out what the fans think their subgenders are.

Like, I'm gonna guess that Riker and Worf are alphas. Picard could go either way. LaForge is an omega, Data is... An android, but he's had sex, so... I'm gonna guess alpha? O'Brien is an omega, but that's mostly going off DS9. Maybe he wasn't in TNG yet? Wesley I'm guessing gets headcanoned as omega.

And see, now I can go look at ao3 and see what other people think for these! And for some reason that's way more interesting to me than just reading any omegaverse fic.

I think we should do more of this sort of shit. I mean, I guess we kinda do for things like top/bottom, dom/sub, trans/cis, but I demand more subgenders! Subgenders that aren't depicted in the fiction but fans have to headcanon.

I kinda want to make a sort of wiki website which works by scraping ao3 tags and assigning alpha/beta/omega to characters from shows, basically a fan vote on how people headcanon the subgenders of these characters.

Anyway I checked and oh boy yeah everyone says Wesley is an omega. Apparently Zefram Cochrane is an omega too.

And the one fic I saw with Data in it made him an omega. Huh. Interesting.

I dunno. It's weird: I've got no interest in reading a fic where these characters fuck in their weird omegaverse ways, but I can't not be interested in knowing how fans headcanon them.

i honestly think the ds9 and bg3 characters would get along so well

kira and wyll would relate to each other’s sense of justice, having to grow up fast (wyll leaving home at 17, kira growing up in the cardassian occupation) and their banter (flirting?) would be great

jadzia and karlach, of COURSE. they have the fun trans bisexual energy going on between them. jadzia’s more of an old soul but would be constantly getting into pranks and hijinks with karlach.

julian and gale would just be so funny. constantly yapping back and forth about their respective fields. julian could teach gale that weird ass tennis game he plays

in a similar vein, i think astarion and garak would be hilarious together as well. the roguish types who are incredibly petty and bitchy. they would also try to kill each other at one point i think

odo and minthara. they’re both old grumps. i think they would have a respect for one another, and minthara would joke about killing quark and odo would be like “believe me, it’s crossed my mind”

halsin and sisko WOULD VIBE SO HARD. they’re both authority figures but also like the cool dads. halsin would whittle away while sisko tells him all about baseball

shadowheart would get along best with ezri, i think. especially selunite shadowheart—they’re both a little awkward in their own ways, but would relate to each other.

lae’zel and worf. they are SO. SO GOOD TOGETHER. both passionate about their cultures (autistically so), they would have such a huge respect for each other and would spar so much.

Picard, bisexual but has never used the word and does not like to think or talk about it. Ideal situation is him getting fucked by a man while a woman is present and in front of him, or fucked by a woman but he has to be able to fuck her after or he gets really weird about it

Dr Crusher, straight

Dr Pulaski, bisexual but like it would come as a surprise to everyone. She could have a years long partnership with a man or a woman and everyone would assume she was straight or gay off that but then she'd offhandedly mention an old lover that indicated otherwise

Geordi LaForge, straight

Riker, bisexual. The ultimate verse switch. Truly split down the middle in what he enjoys but is almost always expected to top and/or dom

that's a good question, i knew a lot about star trek from a young age and i had a lot of it spoiled for me online but i will say i was surprised by how barely subtextual a lot of the gay subtext was. like people told me quodo would be like that but i didnt know they were telling the truth

so in an episode of season one of picard, will and deanna's daughter is wearing a t shirt for a klingon band thats name translates to "sex phasers" and i'm convinced that miral is the frontwoman, bc she'd be about 20 by stp (peak band starting age) and she has both klingon heritage and a dad who's obsessed with 20th century pop culture (i mean who else is gonna get that reference)

pondering on what the next episode would be about led to the idea of lila hiring a babysitter. concepts ensued and have led us here so far

she started doing gigs as a babysitter as she needed more cash to pay school fees (i.e. books n electronics n stuff). and also boys and grills wasn’t having much business after yknow. the whole human meat thing

as shown in the sketches above she’s entirely an overpreparer. earlier concepts had her wearing a fanny pack with a fucking crossbow.

she’s also very silly!!! she loves to watch bad horror movies to laugh at them, and loves true crime videos, especially when they’re bad. so she can laugh at them.

DS9 S2 E19 - Blood Oath

I love Kor so much. He's my favorite Klingon lol

This is the first Jadzia centered episode I enjoyed and it made me realize just how perfect she is for Worf in later seasons. It was clear that she valued Klingon culture before but this one really highlighted how deep it goes for her as well as how much she KNOWS Klingons as a whole, too. She pushed all the right buttons, said all the right things. I enjoyed seeing her like this.

Back to Kor for a second. I've seen all the image sets of the trans allegory between Curzon and Jadzia so I knew that scene was coming but I was not prepared for how smoothly he took it. Not only was it a smooth transition between one to the other, he also was constantly defending her "brother, sister, what does it matter" and the like. Kor treated her like an equal the entire time and I have mad respect for him for that alone. Plus he was just super fun.

The way the episode was framed it was apparent to me that she'd end up going along somehow so I was curious to see how she did but I wasn't expecting a suicide mission from Kang as that doesn't feel like the Klingon way. That said I really appreciate him trying to stop her before he finally relents because of his secret plans, he knew she was not the old man he once knew and there was no reason to drag her to her death. But she's as stubborn as the other Klingons, so she wouldn't drop it.

I don't have a lot to say about Koloth. His death in battle was one that he wanted and he was an asshole up until that point. The only thing about him that was worth noting to me was how he realized Jadzia's strengths were varied and wide after his little sparring matching with her and that's rare for even Klingons at times. I'm glad he got to die with honor, though.

I also appreciate the episode not making Jadzia a killer, though I personally think she would have done it, but instead sat there and let the man who was hurting more take the final blow. Narratively Kang deserved it and so it was a satisfying end to see. I really do think Jadzia would have gutted the man if she was the only one left standing though, without hesitation.

The thing I take issue with in this episode was Jadzia asking Kira how many people she killed in the most insensitive manner possible. Even with her head wrapped up in the turmoil of the impending possibilities I feel like Jadzia, with the many lifetimes of Trill memories and empathy in her head, would have asked differently.

That and Kira being a snitch to Sisko about Jadzia's plans.

7.5/10 - this feels like one of those episodes that I might skip to just to play on its own sometimes

Alexander Rozhenko who got an opportunity to ENJOY Klingon culture at DS9. Alexander getting Dax and the owner of the Klingon restaurant and Martok & crew to take him under their wing. Coming to love things about a culture he never really knew, between his father and mother’s struggles. Alexander Rozhenko bonding with Jake Sisko about creativity. Over lost worlds and lost mothers. But Jake’s closeness with his warm, open dad - who reminds Alexander a lot of his mom - always stings just a bit. Alexander Rozhenko talking with Nog about culture clash and embracing culture.
