I'm going a little nuts. I've just read the Odyssey (they only had me read the Iliad in high school, so I'm correcting that oversight, lol). I've looked at multiple different translations because the library/Guttenberg Project are free so comparing/contrasting is easy and fun! I've also listened to EPIC. And like... it's an adaptation with an obvious set of themes drawn from the original they want to explore over others more predominately present, so there will be differences. It's also a modern interpretation? So like... it's not going to 100% adhere to ancient Greek values? Like a modern audience is going to have some qualms about baby murder, so if you want to adapt it that's going to have to be addressed (if you don't take the coward's way out and just shove every war crime on Neoptolemus - or go the full historian route and fully write from an ancient Greek perspective which may alienate new readers but could also be dope? It's subjective).
Like, we all should know an adaptation (especially a modern one) is never a substitute for reading the original work. But adaptations can also bring new or expanded perspectives on the original work, expand on or address themes from the work in a new way, as well as inspire people to read the original. And honestly? A popular adaptation should motivate people to read/watch the original - this is exactly what kicked my ass in gear to read the Odyssey!
I'd also say don't hero-worship the original. Especially if you haven't read it in a while and have a knee-jerk negative reaction to any new adaptation. The original works should still be read but let people have fun! Don't criticize, just say if you want more content/context read the original! I would, for example, never criticize someone for loving Muppets Treasure Island or Treasure Planet even though they don't stick one to one on the original Treasure Island story - even though it was my favorite book growing up. I think they both are made with a love of the source material, but are changed for the medium + the specific themes they want to address.
I don't know. If an adaption makes a story (especially and old one) more accessible it should usually be celebrated and met with encouragement to look deeper into the source material instead of acting superior - especially if you haven't read the source material in a while either. Let people have fun and encourage them to explore! Don't shame them for liking an adaptation, especially when it's made to expand the reach of a wonderful work to a younger, wider audience.

CONEY ISLAND | cl16 —THE PRELUDE.
series masterlist
summary —an article on y/n l/n and all that entails.
WHO IS Y/N L/N? by Louise Kelly
April 29th 2017.
By now, everyone and their mother has heard the name Y/n L/n. With the awards and the acclaims, it's a surprise to find that she isn't an old Hollywood legend, but instead an 19 year old girl with raw, unfiltered talent.
Although, as brilliant as L/n's work is, many fans and followers have noticed a distinct pattern in her projects: she releases something legendary (i.e. an Academy Award for directing after her debut, topping charts with her first album, etc.) and ghosts all media for six months minimum before returning with another knockout. This reputation has lead many tabloids and reporters to refer to her as "Star" an abbreviated version of what was "The Shooting Star" in reference to the fleeting moments of brightness of her career.
Many people over the years have speculated that this nature has been brought on by a lack of media privacy, as paparazzi and obsessive fans alike tracked her down and documented what was near to her every move in the two years before she began her complete media lockdown—outside of promotions, of course.
Due to this private nature of hers, there's a lot of room for speculation when it comes to her life—something news outlets and tabloids such as enews and entertainment weekly have taken advantage of too many times to count over the years by starting rumors and spreading gossip through clickbaited headlines.
In fact, most things people have come to know for certain about the young woman are through speeches she makes or posts from her friends and family's accounts.
In her 2013 Oscar acceptance speech, she went out of her way to thank her mother and brothers, saying they were the only reason she was standing there and their support meant more than any award ever could. Since then, she's never skipped a chance to praise and credit them for her success.
She has also spoken very fondly of her boyfriend and racing car driver, Charles Leclerc, with whom she's been dating for little over three years and grew up living beside. While she does not credit him by name in her speeches, she often dedicates her awards to "her love". Because of this, most information on the pair's relationship has come through both party's instagram accounts, and the accounts of their friends.
Y/n's closest friend, Amalie Billard, has been the public's window into the life of L/n, sharing sweet and funny moments through Instagram stories and posts. Amalie herself is a photographer who grew up with Y/n and has worked closely with her since an internship and ELLE magazine two years ago. Y/n has been the subject of a vast majority of Billard's work and has said that she "feels more comfortable around Amalie than she has with anyone else in the industry and treasures that bond greatly."
Gossip and drama aside, Y/n has build up an impressive reputation in the world's of cinema and music. She has won a total of 5 Academy Awards; Best Leading Actress (2012), Best Supporting actress (2014), Best Leading Actress (2016), Best Director (2017), Best Supporting Actress (2017). And has one 4 Grammys for her music; Pop Solo Performance (2014), Pop Vocal Album (2014), New Artist (2014), Best Alternative Music Album (2017).
She's been praised by some of Hollywood's greatest over the years for both her work ethic and work itself. "She's an incredibly talented young woman who has the sort of grace you'd see in Old Hollywood and the humour you wish you'd see in everyone now. She's truly a great role model for all—young and old." Said Meryl Streep in an interview for "Call for me", a film that she and Y/n starred in in 2015.

A link-clump demands a linkdump
Tumblr media
Cometh the weekend, cometh the linkdump. My daily-ish newsletter includes a section called "Hey look at this," with three short links per day, but sometimes those links get backed up and I need to clean house. Here's the eight previous installments:
https://pluralistic.net/tag/linkdump/
The country code top level domain (ccTLD) for the Caribbean island nation of Anguilla is .ai, and that's turned into millions of dollars worth of royalties as "entrepreneurs" scramble to sprinkle some buzzword-compliant AI stuff on their businesses in the most superficial way possible:
https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/08/ai-fever-turns-anguillas-ai-domain-into-a-digital-gold-mine/
All told, .ai domain royalties will account for about ten percent of the country's GDP.
It's actually kind of nice to see Anguilla finding some internet money at long last. Back in the 1990s, when I was a freelance web developer, I got hired to work on the investor website for a publicly traded internet casino based in Anguilla that was a scammy disaster in every conceivable way. The company had been conceived of by people who inherited a modestly successful chain of print-shops and decided to diversify by buying a dormant penny mining stock and relaunching it as an online casino.
But of course, online casinos were illegal nearly everywhere. Not in Anguilla – or at least, that's what the founders told us – which is why they located their servers there, despite the lack of broadband or, indeed, reliable electricity at their data-center. At a certain point, the whole thing started to whiff of a stock swindle, a pump-and-dump where they'd sell off shares in that ex-mining stock to people who knew even less about the internet than they did and skedaddle. I got out, and lost track of them, and a search for their names and business today turns up nothing so I assume that it flamed out before it could ruin any retail investors' lives.
Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory, one of those former British colonies that was drained and then given "independence" by paternalistic imperial administrators half a world away. The country's main industries are tourism and "finance" – which is to say, it's a pearl in the globe-spanning necklace of tax- and corporate-crime-havens the UK established around the world so its most vicious criminals – the hereditary aristocracy – can continue to use Britain's roads and exploit its educated workforce without paying any taxes.
This is the "finance curse," and there are tiny, struggling nations all around the world that live under it. Nick Shaxson dubbed them "Treasure Islands" in his outstanding book of the same name:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780230341722/treasureislands
I can't imagine that the AI bubble will last forever – anything that can't go on forever eventually stops – and when it does, those .ai domain royalties will dry up. But until then, I salute Anguilla, which has at last found the internet riches that I played a small part in bringing to it in the previous century.
The AI bubble is indeed overdue for a popping, but while the market remains gripped by irrational exuberance, there's lots of weird stuff happening around the edges. Take Inject My PDF, which embeds repeating blocks of invisible text into your resume:
https://kai-greshake.de/posts/inject-my-pdf/
The text is tuned to make resume-sorting Large Language Models identify you as the ideal candidate for the job. It'll even trick the summarizer function into spitting out text that does not appear in any human-readable form on your CV.
Embedding weird stuff into resumes is a hacker tradition. I first encountered it at the Chaos Communications Congress in 2012, when Ang Cui used it as an example in his stellar "Print Me If You Dare" talk:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njVv7J2azY8
Cui figured out that one way to update the software of a printer was to embed an invisible Postscript instruction in a document that basically said, "everything after this is a firmware update." Then he came up with 100 lines of perl that he hid in documents with names like cv.pdf that would flash the printer when they ran, causing it to probe your LAN for vulnerable PCs and take them over, opening a reverse-shell to his command-and-control server in the cloud. Compromised printers would then refuse to apply future updates from their owners, but would pretend to install them and even update their version numbers to give verisimilitude to the ruse. The only way to exorcise these haunted printers was to send 'em to the landfill. Good times!
Printers are still a dumpster fire, and it's not solely about the intrinsic difficulty of computer security. After all, printer manufacturers have devoted enormous resources to hardening their products against their owners, making it progressively harder to use third-party ink. They're super perverse about it, too – they send "security updates" to your printer that update the printer's security against you – run these updates and your printer downgrades itself by refusing to use the ink you chose for it:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/11/ink-stained-wretches-battle-soul-digital-freedom-taking-place-inside-your-printer
It's a reminder that what a monopolist thinks of as "security" isn't what you think of as security. Oftentimes, their security is antithetical to your security. That was the case with Web Environment Integrity, a plan by Google to make your phone rat you out to advertisers' servers, revealing any adblocking modifications you might have installed so that ad-serving companies could refuse to talk to you:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/02/self-incrimination/#wei-bai-bai
WEI is now dead, thanks to a lot of hueing and crying by people like us:
https://www.theregister.com/2023/11/02/google_abandons_web_environment_integrity/
But the dream of securing Google against its own users lives on. Youtube has embarked on an aggressive campaign of refusing to show videos to people running ad-blockers, triggering an arms-race of ad-blocker-blockers and ad-blocker-blocker-blockers:
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/where-will-the-ad-versus-ad-blocker-arms-race-end/
The folks behind Ublock Origin are racing to keep up with Google's engineers' countermeasures, and there's a single-serving website called "Is uBlock Origin updated to the last Anti-Adblocker YouTube script?" that will give you a realtime, one-word status update:
https://drhyperion451.github.io/does-uBO-bypass-yt/
One in four web users has an ad-blocker, a stat that Doc Searls pithily summarizes as "the biggest boycott in world history":
https://doc.searls.com/2015/09/28/beyond-ad-blocking-the-biggest-boycott-in-human-history/
Zero app users have ad-blockers. That's not because ad-blocking an app is harder than ad-blocking the web – it's because reverse-engineering an app triggers liability under IP laws like Section 1201 of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, which can put you away for 5 years for a first offense. That's what I mean when I say that "IP is anything that lets a company control its customers, critics or competitors:
https://locusmag.com/2020/09/cory-doctorow-ip/
I predicted that apps would open up all kinds of opportunities for abusive, monopolistic conduct back in 2010, and I'm experiencing a mix of sadness and smugness (I assume there's a German word for this emotion) at being so thoroughly vindicated by history:
https://memex.craphound.com/2010/04/01/why-i-wont-buy-an-ipad-and-think-you-shouldnt-either/
The more control a company can exert over its customers, the worse it will be tempted to treat them. These systems of control shift the balance of power within companies, making it harder for internal factions that defend product quality and customer interests to win against the enshittifiers:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/28/microincentives-and-enshittification/
The result has been a Great Enshittening, with platforms of all description shifting value from their customers and users to their shareholders, making everything palpably worse. The only bright side is that this has created the political will to do something about it, sparking a wave of bold, muscular antitrust action all over the world.
The Google antitrust case is certainly the most important corporate lawsuit of the century (so far), but Judge Amit Mehta's deference to Google's demands for secrecy has kept the case out of the headlines. I mean, Sam Bankman-Fried is a psychopathic thief, but even so, his trial does not deserve its vastly greater prominence, though, if you haven't heard yet, he's been convicted and will face decades in prison after he exhausts his appeals:
https://newsletter.mollywhite.net/p/sam-bankman-fried-guilty-on-all-charges
The secrecy around Google's trial has relaxed somewhat, and the trickle of revelations emerging from the cracks in the courthouse are fascinating. For the first time, we're able to get a concrete sense of which queries are the most lucrative for Google:
https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/1/23941766/google-antitrust-trial-search-queries-ad-money
The list comes from 2018, but it's still wild. As David Pierce writes in The Verge, the top twenty includes three iPhone-related terms, five insurance queries, and the rest are overshadowed by searches for customer service info for monopolistic services like Xfinity, Uber and Hulu.
All-in-all, we're living through a hell of a moment for piercing the corporate veil. Maybe it's the problem of maintaining secrecy within large companies, or maybe the the rampant mistreatment of even senior executives has led to more leaks and whistleblowing. Either way, we all owe a debt of gratitude to the anonymous leaker who revealed the unbelievable pettiness of former HBO president of programming Casey Bloys, who ordered his underlings to create an army of sock-puppet Twitter accounts to harass TV and movie critics who panned HBO's shows:
https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/hbo-casey-bloys-secret-twitter-trolls-tv-critics-leaked-texts-lawsuit-the-idol-1234867722/
These trolling attempts were pathetic, even by the standards of thick-fingered corporate execs. Like, accusing critics who panned the shitty-ass Perry Mason reboot of disrespecting veterans because the fictional Mason's back-story had him storming the beach on D-Day.
The pushback against corporate bullying is everywhere, and of course, the vanguard is the labor movement. Did you hear that the UAW won their strike against the auto-makers, scoring raises for all workers based on the increases in the companies' CEO pay? The UAW isn't done, either! Their incredible new leader, Shawn Fain, has called for a general strike in 2028:
https://www.404media.co/uaw-calls-on-workers-to-line-up-massive-general-strike-for-2028-to-defeat-billionaire-class/
The massive victory for unionized auto-workers has thrown a spotlight on the terrible working conditions and pay for workers at Tesla, a criminal company that has no compunctions about violating labor law to prevent its workers from exercising their legal rights. Over in Sweden, union workers are teaching Tesla a lesson. After the company tried its illegal union-busting playbook on Tesla service centers, the unionized dock-workers issued an ultimatum: respect your workers or face a blockade at Sweden's ports that would block any Tesla from being unloaded into the EU's fifth largest Tesla market:
https://www.wired.com/story/tesla-sweden-strike/
Of course, the real solution to Teslas – and every other kind of car – is to redesign our cities for public transit, walking and cycling, making cars the exception for deliveries, accessibility and other necessities. Transitioning to EVs will make a big dent in the climate emergency, but it won't make our streets any safer – and they keep getting deadlier.
Last summer, my dear old pal Ted Kulczycky got in touch with me to tell me that Talking Heads were going to be all present in public for the first time since the band's breakup, as part of the debut of the newly remastered print of Stop Making Sense, the greatest concert movie of all time. Even better, the show would be in Toronto, my hometown, where Ted and I went to high-school together, at TIFF.
Ted is the only person I know who is more obsessed with Talking Heads than I am, and he started working on tickets for the show while I starting pricing plane tickets. And then, the unthinkable happened: Ted's wife, Serah, got in touch to say that Ted had been run over by a car while getting off of a streetcar, that he was severely injured, and would require multiple surgeries.
But this was Ted, so of course he was still planning to see the show. And he did, getting a day-pass from the hospital and showing up looking like someone from a Kids In The Hall sketch who'd been made up to look like someone who'd been run over by a car:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorow/53182440282/
In his Globe and Mail article about Ted's experience, Brad Wheeler describes how the whole hospital rallied around Ted to make it possible for him to get to the movie:
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/music/article-how-a-talking-heads-superfan-found-healing-with-the-concert-film-stop/
He also mentions that Ted is working on a book and podcast about Stop Making Sense. I visited Ted in the hospital the day after the gig and we talked about the book and it sounds amazing. Also? The movie was incredible. See it in Imax.
That heartwarming tale of healing through big suits is a pretty good place to wrap up this linkdump, but I want to call your attention to just one more thing before I go: Robin Sloan's Snarkmarket piece about blogging and "stock and flow":
https://snarkmarket.com/2010/4890/
Sloan makes the excellent case that for writers, having a "flow" of short, quick posts builds the audience for a "stock" of longer, more synthetic pieces like books. This has certainly been my experience, but I think it's only part of the story – there are good, non-mercenary reasons for writers to do a lot of "flow." As I wrote in my 2021 essay, "The Memex Method," turning your commonplace book into a database – AKA "blogging" – makes you write better notes to yourself because you know others will see them:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/05/09/the-memex-method/
This, in turn, creates a supersaturated, subconscious solution of fragments that are just waiting to nucleate and crystallize into full-blown novels and nonfiction books and other "stock." That's how I came out of lockdown with nine new books. The next one is The Lost Cause, a hopepunk science fiction novel about the climate whose early fans include Naomi Klein, Rebecca Solnit, Bill McKibben and Kim Stanley Robinson. It's out on November 14:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865939/the-lost-cause

If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:

as always if any of this information is incorrect or outdated, please feel free to correct me in a reblog or an ask and i'll update the information in this post. i'll try to keep up with any new companies that are brought up on the twitter account mentioned at the beginning of this post. i'm not here to call for a boycott of every artist mentioned here because i don't feel i am in the position to do so, but i'm not discouraging you from choosing to do so. in fact i encourage you to listen to these artists unofficially at the very least.
i'm not sure the extent to which these companies get revenue from these artists, i don't know if it's just streams or if other things like merch sales and youtube views contribute but quite a few of these artists' companies are being boycotted currently or in the near future anyway, so i would suggest you not buy any merch or watch youtube videos officially from them. this post has more info on downloading music, youtube videos (with subtitles), and the boycotts i mentioned so i hope you all will check that out too. tris @bandzboy has also been posting about and sharing twitter posts about zionism in music, especially in the kpop industry so i suggest you check out her blog as well

Maroon
Maroon is looking back on her relationship with Harry in a linear way. It was the surprise song 26 May, 2023, the first show after 20 May.
Tumblr media
'Red'...
Taylor wrote 10 of the final 30 Red TV tracks after Harry entered the chat in March. @taylor-on-your-dash has this Making of Red post which shows it was complete 4 months after they met, it's release was 7 months after 'The Very First Night'.
It is wild to me that people say Red can't be Haylor but 1989 was inspired by a '3 month relationship', yet Reputation is about Joe, who she started dating 5 months before it's release, Rep was mostly done by then. Rep's vault tracks will surprise some more than 1989's did!
All this is to say, we know Maroon is Haylor because it is not filled with All Too Well rage and the title references Red. The Lyric Video also includes a pink/maroon sunset, which similar to sunsets referenced in Cruel Summer, INTHAF and Slut!
Lyrics
When the morning came we were cleaning incense off your vinyl shelf 'Cause we lost track of time again Laughing with my feet in your lap Like you were my closest friend "How'd we end up on the floor anyway?" You say "Your roommate's cheap-ass screw-top rosé, that's how" I see you every day now
The first verse remembers the start
Harry's unreleased track, Hunger, is similar in meaning to Maroon. It opens with a similar line "Candles burned down to the floor." New Years Day also includes Candle wax on the hardwood floors.' Finally, Taylor included the incense in the lyric and music videos for Lavender Haze.
The first verse is very 1989 feeling, they sound young, hanging out and enjoying each others company. The room mate is most likely Ben Winston, he stayed with Ben while dating Taylor and renovating his current house. some of the This is Us Harry scenes were shot there.
And I chose you The one I was dancin' with In New York, no shoes Looked up at the sky and it was
Harry and Taylor danced with no shoes in New York after 1D's first Madison Square Garden performance 4 December 2012. Taylor is looking up to the sky in the photo of Harry lifting her.
Harry also mentioned barefeet in the leaked Trouble "And we could take this anywhere / Cause were we’re going / We don’t need no shoes" Trouble was leaked 20 April 22, 6 months before Midnights.
Tumblr media
The burgundy on my T-shirt when you splashed your wine into me And how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet, it was The mark you saw on my collarbone, the rust that grew between telephones The lips I used to call home, so scarlet, it was maroon
This verse remembers a passionate fight, like the album Red Taylor described the emotions from that period as red, and later on Lover as Golden. The wine stained dress or shirt here is also in:
Olivia “This isn't the stain of a red wine, I'm bleeding love”
Clean “you're still all over me like a wine stained dress i can't wear anymore"
Blood rushing to cheeks is blushing, in Gold Rush Taylor also referenced this "I don't like anticipatin' my face in a red flush"
The mark on Taylors collarbone may be the possible hickey here, from the night before she left the Virgin isles.
Rust growing between telephones indicates they stopped calling, Harry also references this in From the Dining Table “Even my phone misses your call, by the way”
When the silence came, we were shaking blind and hazy How the hell did we lose sight of us again? Sobbin' with your head in your hands Ain't that the way shit always ends? You were standin' hollow-eyed in the hallway Carnations you had thought were roses, that's us I feel you no matter what The rubies that I gave up
This verse is the aftermath of the fight in the one before, with apology flowers, not talking and paying for it.
Harry cries with his head in his hands
Now that we don't talk and Afterglow "I lived like an island, punished you in silence" also refer to silence/not speaking
'The rubies I gave up' to me is treasure, rubies being the red theme. To me this is in the Pay for it' Haylor theme, however Taylor has referred to her friends as Junior Jewels in YBTM, she may have she lost friends in the break up.
Standin Hollow-eyed in the Hallway refers to the Hallway theme
The carnations not roses means they were plagued by things going wrong. Harry referenced the Carnations in the Satellite MV:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I wake with your memory over me That's a real fucking legacy, legacy (it was maroon)x2
The outtro is after some time has passed, she wakes from an adult dream remembering her lost muse. Taylor and Harry have a surprising number of songs about this:
Wildest Dreams (Even if it's just in your wildest dreams, ah-ah, ha (ha-ah, ha) / Wildest dreams, ah-ah, ha / You'll see me in hindsight / Tangled up with you all night
Ready for it...? In the middle of the night, in my dreams (my dreams) You should see the things we do (we do), baby (baby, mmm, eh)
Little Freak - "You bring blue lights to dreams" and "A wet dream just dangling"
Cruel Summer "Fever dream high in the quiet of the night / You know that I caught it"

Feather blowing in the wind. Twilight. 5:52 am. April 17, 2024. Cove Island Park. Stamford, CT.
What happens every day is what’s surprising. The treasure’s never where I look to find it but where I simply look — the sky, the wind, sunrise, a silver arc, the moment’s chance.

14 final scenes that inspired LOTBB, A thread:
1. "Black Sails” (2014) is a historical drama set in the early 18th century and serves as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island." The series is about the adventures and political intrigues of Captain Flint and his crew of pirates in the Caribbean. John and Madi's relationship stood out to me. John is a former British naval officer and Madi is an enslaved woman and the daughter of an African leader. Just from their descriptions you can imagine how different they are. I found that some of the themes in the show overlap with my intentions for LOTBB. It’s not often you see a black woman on a boat with pirates on a tv show. However, every few years we see something different. As their personal connection deepens, it becomes entangled with the larger conflicts and ambitions that drive the narrative of the series. I chose two scenes for you those interested. Scene 1 and Scene 2.
2. “Becoming Jane” (2007) is a biographical drama about the early life of Jane Austen. The film explores Austen's relationship with Tom Lefroy. Their romance, which faces societal and economic challenges, serves as an inspirational story. The film blends historical facts with fictional elements to illustrate how Austen’s personal experiences influenced her novels. Jane and Tom have such good chemistry in this movie and I think this scene perfectly encompasses the tension between Roman and Jane, especially in those early days when their relationship was still undeclared and seemingly vague. I loved the literary element of the second scene so much that I found some way to work it into the story . Watch scene here & Here .
3. “Belle” (2013) is a historical drama based on the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed-race daughter of a British admiral. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle in 18th-century England, Belle navigates racial and social issues while becoming involved in the fight against the slave trade. The film explores her personal and legal struggles, her relationship with a young lawyer, and her impact on the broader movement for justice. Belle (Dido) who was born in the West Indies like Jane. This movie was really popular here in the early days of tumblr. This scene was sweet to me as Belle learns how to manage her hair as a black woman in such a difficult and tumultuous time. I relate Jane with this character as she navigates Europe while being black and a woman. She learns the beauty of self care and begins to enjoy things like styling her hair and dressing up. Jane begins to accept that it’s okay to be perceived in her new life. Readers will see Jane in a new light in the last chapter, as she fully embraces her differences and even falls in love with them. Watch it here.
4. “Anna Karenina” (2012) revolves around Anna Karenina, a woman trapped in a loveless marriage who embarks on a passionate affair with Count Vronsky. This movie birthed MANY Aaron Taylor Johnson fans. I personally gravitated more towards Kitty and Levin in the story. Their story was allll about patience and growth. No did not mean never. This proposal scene is heart warming and a Hint for chapter 9. Watch the scene here.
5. “Chevalier” (2023) is a historical drama about the life of Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges. Set in 18th-century France, it portrays Bologne as a talented Black composer, violinist, and swordsman who rises to prominence despite facing racial prejudice. The film explores his achievements, personal struggles, and the impact of his extraordinary talents in a society that is both fascinated by and hostile toward him. Roman’s backstory is based heavily on this portrayal of Joseph Bologne. I recommend this movie to any of you period piece lovers out there. It’s the embodiment of “you have to work twice as hard to get half”. I also appreciate a nod towards the people of color who lived in Europe during this time. All too often movies like these use black people as props or decoration. However, Joseph’s mother introduces him to a whole new world that the “others” create for themselves when nobody is watching. Those who are “othered” have always made space for themselves—even during the darkest points in their history. Paris will be eye opening for Jane. This is a Hint for chapter 9. Watch the scene here.
6. Castlevania:Nocturne (2023) Edouard and Annette's relationship is marked by a deep bond rooted in shared experiences and mutual support. Edouard, a skilled and determined vampire hunter, is initially focused on his mission to vanquish the vampire threat. Annette, his close ally, provides both emotional and practical support. Their relationship evolves from professional partnership to a more personal and affectionate connection, with Annette often serving as a source of strength and encouragement for Edouard. Annette’s backstory helped shape Jane’s backstory, especially as she finds herself. Annette begins to understand that she is not defined by what she’s been through. She pushes past the labels placed onto her and finds her strength. Edouard uses his talents to disarm and survive much like Roman did at one point in his life. However, Edouard is on a mission and Annette joins the cause proficiently. Watch the scene here.
7. “Pride & Prejudice” (2005) a film adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel. It follows Elizabeth Bennet, a witty and independent young woman, as she navigates issues of class, marriage, and morality in 19th-century England. The story focuses on her relationship with the wealthy and initially aloof Mr. Darcy, exploring themes of first impressions, social expectations, and personal growth. I’m sure that most people have heard of this movie by now and it’s certainly a slow burner. However, my favorite part of the movie was Elizabeth asking for her Father’s blessing. A close second was Darcy’s second attempt at a proposal. It was so touching and it will be a hint for chapter 9. Watch the scene here.
8. “ Sense & Sensibility” (1995) is an adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. The film focuses on the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, who must navigate love and hardship after their father's death leaves them in a financially vulnerable position. Elinor, who represents "sense," is practical and restrained, while Marianne, embodying "sensibility," is emotional and impulsive. As they contend with romantic entanglements and societal expectations, the story explores themes of love, class, and resilience. I found this movie touching and the element that I hoped to extract from the male lead was the patience of Colonel Brandon. This movie is age gap done right especially considering how much older the Colonel is than Marianne. Watch the scene here.
9. “ Hunger Games: Catching Fire” (2013) needs no introduction or explanation. There’s a good chance you’ve seen it or have seen enough clips to understand what this movie is about. It’s nothing short of devastating. However, the monkey mutts idea is an idea I pretty much stole (not without tweaking a few things of course). Do I feel bad about it? Considering some of the political affiliations/opinions that the directors and producers/actors have—-no I don’t. Watch the scene here.
10. “Annihilation” (2018) is a science fiction film based on Jeff VanderMeer's novel. The story follows a group of scientists led by biologist Lena, who enters a mysterious and rapidly expanding zone known as "The Shimmer." Inside, they encounter bizarre and deadly mutations affecting both flora and fauna, challenging their understanding of reality and human nature. As they delve deeper, they confront existential questions and personal traumas, leading to a gripping and surreal exploration of transformation and the unknown. The island in chapter 8 is inspired by this movie, especially the encounter with the Monkey’s. I highly recommend this sci-fi if you’re into aliens. Please proceed with caution with this scene as it has gore and the death of a character. Watch it here.
11. “ Damsel”( 2024) The talking dragon. Need I say more ? Watch the scene here.
12. “ Alien” (1979) directed by Ridley Scott, follows the crew of the spaceship Nostromo, who encounter a deadly extraterrestrial lifeform after investigating a distress signal from a remote planet. The alien creature, initially discovered as an egg, grows into a lethal being that picks off the crew members one by one. The film builds tension and horror as the remaining crew, including Officer Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), must fight to survive and ultimately confront the alien. This scene is such an organic depiction of how a group interacts during an impossible situation. There’s frustration, fear, disbelief, anger, paranoia and exhaustion. I wanted the conflict for my story and I did that to the best of my abilities. Watch the scene here.

Peerages & Titles: how Royal titles work
[Full list of disclaimers is in the master post but tl;dr is that sources for this information are not consistent, sources may be modern, and this may be edited/expanded at anytime as my research continues.]
The full style of the monarch is Charles the Third, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of His other Realms and Territories King, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith [Queen Elizabeth II used the same].
The full styles of King George III were George the Third, by the Grace of God King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Archtreasurer and Prince-Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg from 1760–1801; George the Third, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith, Arch-treasurer and Prince-Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg from 1801–1814; George the Third, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith, King of Hanover, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg from 1814–1820.
Full list of the styles of English monarchs can be found here.
Monarchs always also hold the Duchy of Lancaster, Duchy of Normandy [used when on the Channel Islands] and Lord of Mann [used when on the Isle of Man, only from 1765 when it was purchased by King George III].
On Lord of Mann; Queen Elizabeth II was referred to as Lord of Mann however Queen Victoria was Lady of Mann. I imagine it is personal preference, somewhat influenced by public perception/opinion at the time.
The monarch, man or woman, is referred to as the Duke of Lancaster and Duke of Normandy. Despite their difference in regards to Lord/Lady of Mann, both Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria were referred to as Duke’s.
If a peer succeeds to the throne, the peerage merges with the crown and ceases to exist.
A fount of honour is someone with exclusive right to grant titles of nobility and orders of chivalry. In the United Kingdom, it is the monarch. [The concept is older, but the specific term dates back to late feudalism around the 15th century. It is appropriate in your fics.]
A Queen Regnant is a queen ruling in her own right.
A Queen Consort is the wife of a king.
A Dowager Queen is the widow of a former king.
Queen Mother refers to a dowager queen of a queen regnant, but is rarely used as a formal title.
A Queen Regnant’s husband is never the king consort, as a king will always outrank a queen, but they are still a royal consort. They are whatever other title(s) they may hold. They are not automatically a prince. Queen Elizabeth II made her husband Prince Philip in order to elevate his title and status to be in line with that of their children, otherwise he would have remained only The Duke of Edinburgh. The only man to hold the official title of Prince Consort was Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, who held no other peerages or titles.
The Prince of Wales belongs to the heir apparent of the Crown, an heir presumptive does not hold the title. Therefore, the Princess of Wales is/was only a title for the wife of the Prince of Wales. [Given the abolition of male inheritance primogeniture for royals in 2012, it is unclear whether this would change in modern/future applications. It is entirely possible, given girls can now be heir apparent, that a girl may one day hold the title of Princess of Wales in her own right].
The heir apparent also holds the Duchy of Cornwall.
The Princess Royal is the oldest daughter of the monarch, and the highest title for a female member of the royal family (other than queen). Queen Elizabeth II was never The Princess Royal, as there can only ever be one at a time and her aunt Princess Mary of York already held the title when Elizabeth became eligible.
All people in the below tables are real British royals from the 19th–21st centuries.
