"Burglar Gets Three Years," Windsor Star. January 12, 1943. Page 8. ---- Chatham Magistrate Says Accused's Record Holds No Hope --- CHATHAM. Jan. 12 - Lloyd Armstrong. 30, of no fixed address, was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary at Kingston on a charge of breaking and entering and theft by Magistrate I. B. Craig in police court yesterday.
Armstrong pleaded guilty to the charge a week ago and was remanded one week for sentence. He was arrested in London a week ago Saturday driving a truck stolen earlier in the day from a garage here where he had been employed.
Commenting upon the long record of the accused, Magistrate Craig declared he could see no hope for him.
Francis Turner, Concession 5, Chatham-Gore, was sentenced to seven days in the county jail when he pleaded guilty of drunk driving. He was, however, given a month deferment of sentence to assist his father in moving. Turner was charged by Provincial Constable Jack McQueen of Wallaceburg who found the accused intoxicated in his car in the ditch on Highway 40. January 9. In addition he was assessed $19.90 in costs.
[AL: Armstrong was married, though he did not disclose his wife's address to the police or prison authorities - his sister lived in Noranda, Quebec. Despite the sensational claims of the sentencing judge, Armstrong's record amounted to less than two years in prison, with several terms in the reformatory and local jails for minor traffic, drunkenness and property violations. He had been released from the penitentiary in February 1942, after serving a year and a half of a two year sentence for theft in the low security unit. This time around, he was convict #7167 at Kingston Penitentiary. He was assigned to the garage, fixing cars, and was transferred May 1943 to the reform-oriented Collin's Bay Penitentiary. There he was inmate #2056 and, again, worked in the garage. He had severed reports but was otherwise 'clean' on his record, and was released May 1945.]

Bhubander Singh says he got into trucking after a friend told him it was a good way to make money. A year and a half into his new career, now working for his third company, he says he regrets his decision. The 26-year-old immigrant says his employers have constantly withheld pay, claiming he hasn't completed trips, and he's now owed over $9,000 in wages. "I did hard work. I was driving like 70 hours a week," he said. "I'm under so much pressure with the rent and with my bills and the car payments, and the company's not paying."

I am curious: What are your current thoughts about the Toa Inika's drivining situation when they become Toa Inika?
Hahahaha I am SO glad you have asked me this because I have Thoughts
Terminology for non-Canadians (and/or Ontarians, idk what other provinces call things):
G1 - learner's permit, obtainable at 16, written test only, must have someone in the passenger seat who has had their full license at least 4 years, can't drive between midnight and 5am, can't go on certain high speed highways (401, QEW, etc) unless the person in the passenger seat is an accredited driver's ed instructor, must pass G2 exit test within 5 years or restart process
G2 - must have had a G1 for either a) 1 year or b) 8 months if graduated from driver's ed, practical exam, can drive alone, on any roads, at any time of day, certain other restrictions apply (esp if under age 19), must pass G exit test within 5 years or start over
G - must have had G2 for at least a year, practical exam, no restrictions except for basic road laws lol
MTO - Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, basically the DMV but for Ontario
OKAY SO ALL THAT SAID:
Jaller: got his G1 the day after he turned 16 because his birthday was on a Sunday and the MTO was closed. Took the driver's ed course affiliated with his school that same year. Just got his G2. Has to beg and plead to borrow a car because both his parents work and need vehicles for that, and he can bike to work from the house.
Hahli: has been driving farm vehicles illegally for several years. Has her G1 but isn't eligible for her G2 yet. Is learning how to drive from her uncle because he's the only person in her family who respects road safety laws. Can occasionally convince her parents to loan her the truck if she fills up the tank.
Kongu: got his G2 a couple months ago. Inherited his grandparents' junker. Mostly just drives himself and Tamaru to school and back. Grumbles about being his sister's taxi service but also uses this as an excuse to hang around in town.
Nuparu: almost eligible for his G2 but not quite. Took driver's ed exclusively to lower his insurance premium. The only Inika who knows how to drive stick. Wants to get a motorcycle license too. Does all his family's car maintenance in exchange for money being put into the "Nuparu Gets His Own Car" fund.
Hewkii: can't drive. Wants to move to a big city with good public transport so he never has to learn how.
Matoro: was forced to get his G1 against his will and avoids driving like the plague. Sometimes his parents make him drive to the store or something for practice and he hates it. Wants to move out to the woods so he never has to drive again.
Takua: had to learn to drive so they could take on more cleaning jobs. Is actually almost eligible for their full G license. Has the most experience driving because their mom would make them drive between jobs for practice when they had their G1. Is not allowed to cover their mom's company car with bumper stickers to their immense dismay, and also isn't allowed to borrow it for non-work reasons if it's not an emergency.

Please write the small town dteam au
I didn't have much plotted out for it but I remember
- Sapnap is the youngest but the only one who has a license so he has to drive them everywhere (they're in the country so nowhere is in walking distance)
-Sapnap drives his dad's massive white ram truck and only pretends he has road rage to impress some of his other friends 😭
- Dream is a hockey boy and he has flow. I'm so sorry everyone him having flow was important to the plot
- George insists on Timmies runs every time they're going somewhere but never pays for it because he's not the driver and so can't pay at the drive through
There was some other stuff I think there was dnf going to a drive in theatre in sapnaps truck and also the three of them hanging out in the park after dark to get high or something
It was very reminiscent of 2010s small town Ontario high school and I think that's why I didn't do it was because it felt too self indulgent

I don’t usually make vent posts like this but I need to scream into the void about this right now and my friends don’t want to hear it anymore.
Tomorrow I have a doctor’s appointment about an hour’s drive away. Unfortunately, I don’t have a car because I just paid for school and insurance would tear me apart.
Outside my building is a train track that goes right up to the edge of the property. It’s hidden by a fence, but every time a train goes past it’s like a continuous rolling clap of thunder that you feel in your inner ear. Naturally, one would assume that there would be a train station in town. One would be dead wrong. There isn’t a train station for miles in any direction, and the only way in and out of town is through the highway.
Looking up bus routes on google maps shows me several with the same rough timing: SEVEN HOURS. Somehow, taking the bus is more time than it would take to bike all the way there (six hours). Even with all the stops a bus makes, you would assume that once it got on the highway there wouldn’t be much of a difference. But if it takes me FOURTEEN HOURS to see the only doctor that does HRT nearby, then that’s simply not viable. I have free time, but not that much. Not that much.
Of course, I could take an Uber. At this point it seems like the best option. Pay hundreds of dollars for a drive that would normally cost <$100 for gas, while stranding a complete stranger in an entirely different town. An Uber driver once told me that if they drove out of a certain area, they would have to drive all the way back to it before they could pick up more riders, which wastes their time and their money. If I order an Uber, I’m asking two separate strangers to make a two hour round trip drive in which they’re only allowed one rider at a time. Just an absolute dogshit thing to do to another person.
I live in Ontario, which is supposed to be Canada’s number one industrial powerhouse. We have the highest population of any province in the country, mostly in one dense area along the US border. Every year the government spends millions of dollars to maintain the roads and highways connecting all these places. And not one, NOT ONE train station in my whole fucking town? You’re telling me there’s enough money for the roads and highways and all the streetlights and fuel for transport trucks and construction. But it’s just not in the budget to lay down some fucking tracks and make commuting without a car fast and affordable? Really?
I guess if everyone just buys a car then that’s good for oil companies and insurance companies and car companies and… you know, all the people that get rich off covering everything in pavement and waiting for people to die. But for people like me who don’t have a car and need to get somewhere an hour away? Well, I guess we can just go fuck ourselves. It’s our fault for not having enough money to buy our own personal 3000 pound death machine.
Look. I get it. People like driving their little metal boxes around. It’s fun. Whatever. But human beings have been laying railroads (not like that) for literally hundreds of years. The industry my country loves so much was built on railroads. We KNOW that trains work, we KNOW that they’re fast and easy and they get people places on time, and we KNOW that they can transport WAY more people than a highway while taking up way less space. SO WHY THE FUCK IS THERE NO TRAIN STATION IN MY TOWN. WHY IS THE ROAD THE ONLY OPTION. WHY AM I STUCK USING BUSES AND RIDESHARING AND SHITTY HALF-MEASURES TO GET AROUND THIS OBVIOUS GAPING HOLE IN OUR PROVINCE’S AWFUL INFRASTRUCTURE. STOP ADDING MORE LANES TO THE GOD DAMN HIGHWAYS AND GIVE US A WORKING TRANSIT SYSTEM. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST.

Canadian Robber Involved in Crash Killing Indian Family of Three Also Hails from India
Tumblr media
During a police pursuit of a liquor store burglar in Ontario, Canada, tragedy struck as the suspect's truck collided with another vehicle, resulting in the deaths of three members of an Indian family. Shockingly, it has now been revealed that the suspected robber, who died in the crash, also had Indian origins.
On April 29, a 21-year-old burglary suspect of Indian descent, identified as Gagandeep Singh, was being pursued by Ontario Police when his U-Haul truck crashed into a van carrying members of the Srinivasapillai-Ananthakrishnan family from Tamil Nadu, who were visiting Canada. The collision claimed the lives of Manivannan Srinivasapillai, 60, Mahalakshmi Ananthakrishnan, 55, and their three-month-old grandson, Aditya Vivaan. Miraculously, the boy's parents survived the crash.
The tragic incident has sparked debate about the Canadian bail system, as Singh had been released on bail for minor offenses prior to the fatal crash. While some, including Conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre, argue that a better bail system could have prevented the deaths, others believe Singh's releases were justified based on the information available at the time.
Meanwhile, a funeral was held for Aditya Vivaan, the youngest victim of the crash, who was remembered as a "beautiful soul" that brought immense joy during his short time on earth. The family's grief is compounded by the fact that Aditya's grandparents, who had traveled from India to meet their grandson, were also among the casualties and were cremated earlier in the week.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is currently investigating the crash, which resulted in the death of the van driver and serious injuries to the passenger.

"SEND SIX TO PRISON FOR THEFT," North Bay Nugget. May 18, 1943. Page 14. ---- Two Get Penitentiary Terms for Stealing Auto in Mattawa --- Phillippe Grenier [TOP] and Ormond Foubert, both of Montreal, were found guilty when they appeared before Magistrate M. G. Gould in North Bay police court on Monday afternoon on a charge of stealing a car in Mattawa on April 28. Each was sentenced to two years and three months in Kingston penitentiary.
Isadore Grenier, Andre Coursol, Gregor Larocque and Fernand Beausoleil, also of Montreal, charged jointly with the first two men were given sentences of one year each at Burwash Industrial Farm. Coursol pleaded guilty; the others, not guilty.
Heavier sentences were handed out to the first two because each had a previous conviction on a theft charge.
Three witnesses were heard. Murray Kolvinko of Mattawa, owner of the car, told of seeing the six in Mattawa on the morning of the theft, of talking with them and of identifying them later in a Toronto police station.
Mrs. Amy Granfield of Toronto identified two of the accused as being members of a party of six who had parked a car behind a garage at the rear of her property on April 28 and had failed to return for it.
Joseph Shield, a member of the Toronto detective force, told of the arrest on the afternoon of April 28, of the six near where the car was abandoned and very soon after that took place. He told also of finding on the person of one of the accused a number of "postage due" stamps used by the owner of the car in his duties as mail courier. Found also in a cell occupied by the accused had been ration books bearing the name of the victim of the theft.
Before passing sentence, Magistrate Gould said: "While the failure of the accused to give evidence is by no means conclusive against them, still it is a matter to be considered, when joined to the fact that all five who pleaded not guilty were found in Toronto with the one who pleaded guilty and also with the fact that two of them have been definitely identified." Continuing the magistrate said that identification was sufficient to involve all six in the theft.
Crown Attorney E. A. Tilley conducted the prosecution and Arthur Courtmanche was interpreter.
[AL: Grenier was 22, married, a truck driver and had served a two year term at St Vincent de Paul Penitentiary. He was convict #7309 at Kingston Penitentiary and worked in a broom factory - he was transferred August 1943 to Collin's Bay Penitentiary, the lower security camp. There he was inmate #2109 and was released February 1945. Foubert was 22, single, a construction welder by trade, and had done time in Montreal and Ontario prisons. He was convict #7310 at Kingston Penitentiary and worked in the change room. He was a difficult prisoner and reported five times for insolence or poor conduct. He was transferred August 1944 to Collin's Bay Penitentiary, and released in early 1945.]

Niagara police say they’ve solved a 25-year-old murder using DNA and genetic genealogy connecting the death of a Toronto woman to a suspect from Northern Ontario.
Homicide investigators say DNA evidence has linked the death of then 26-year-old Nadine Gurczenski with a New Liskeard truck driver who died in 2017.
Gurczenski’s body was found in a “roadside ditch” on May 8, 1999, around 5 p.m. in an area around Victoria Avenue and Eighth Avenue in the Town of Lincoln.
“Three passing cyclists … located a female’s body in the ditch on Victoria Avenue, which is in Vineland,” Det. Staff Sgt. Andrew Knevel explained. [...]
