Fruits Basket Personality Types Part 1: an Introduction to the Enneagram

If you've never heard of the Enneagram, it's a personality typing system that looks at your core motivations and the childhood wounds that inform them. I love it because it's entirely internal; while it's true that people of the same type tend to have some traits in common, what's most important is that deep-seated, all-encompassing belief that drives you. In this post, I will give a brief overview of the 9 types to refer back to when I analyze the characters of Fruits Basket. I plan to analyze all the cursed Sohmas, plus Tohru, Arisa, Saki, Kazuma, Kakeru, Machi, and possibly some more minor characters (like Kimi, Megumi, Kyoko, Katsuya, and anyone else who captures my interest).

As I've been writing fanfiction, I've been using the Enneagram as a tool to better understand the characters and their motivations. When I've been stuck on how to write a character, I try to figure out their Enneagram (and sometimes their MBTI) to get a better sense of who they are, what drives them, how they think, etc... It's a wonderful tool for writers, and I highly recommend learning about it if you ever struggle to understand a character (as a writer or a reader/viewer!).

When I first learned about the Enneagram, I connected strongly with 1, 2, 4, and 7. I connected slightly with 5 and 6, and not at all with 3, 8, and 9. Can you guess my Type (and Wing) from that information? Answer is at the bottom of this post!

Hello, I've seen lots of people type this way and it really confuses me: they'll have their enneagram with wing e.g. 7w8, but then their tritype beginning with a different enneagram e.g. 953. How can this be??

It can't, this is a misinterpretation of the theory, likely by only just starting to get into typology and using simplified sources such as truity or enneagram institute. These sources are often vague about the functions of wings and their importance, leading people to typing their core type with the wing in mind, and their tritype based solely on whichever type description they relate to most. Though if 7w6 with the tritype 953 is a reference to an actual type you've seen, I don't know how they got to this conclusion to be honest. it might be because of a description of this specific tritype as a whole.  Regardless of why, enneagram doesn't work like that. People typing themselves in this way likely do so because they just haven't found the right sources, which is fair because it can take quite some looking around. Personally I do try to point it out whenever I see this, but do make sure to go about it respectfully!

heeseung is very creative, he knows how to make a situation turn around and knows how to pull out something completely unexpected. that is definitely a trait for a poison type pokemon. he also seems to be very hard headed, he is confident but sometimes it is too much, so he may be a poison-dragon type!

by process of elimination, heeseung is totally eternatus! not to mention, his moves would definitely be very unpredictable and dangerous. since eternatus is an alien that can make holes in spacetime, this is pretty fitting!

ace of swords, the hermit, nine of wands rx., the hanged man

jay is a very intelligent and secure person, he is extremely mature and seems to balance his head and his heart well. jay is also in tune with the world around him and seems to be able to connect with people very easily. which i think it very fitting for a psychic pokemon! it also seems that jay as a pokemon is extremely protective.

deoxys is a great fit given these conditions. deoxys is incredibly smart, being able to change form depending on what it needs. a lot of jay's moves could be something underneath the surface, which fits deoxys' telepathy shown in the anime!

queen of swords, ten of cups, knight of pentacles rx., the high priestess

jake is someone who cannot be held down, he is independent and jumps towards change and his own rules. suffice to say, he may be a little, if not a lot, mischevious. since i also got the emperor he is most likely only darkness, there is no need for him to have another type if he is already strong with one.

the only legendary pokemon that is strictly dark is darkrai! as i mentioned before, there really is no need for darkrai, or jake in this scenario, to have a dual type if he is already strong with one. darkrai is frequently described as the strongest dark type pokemon.

the wheel of fortune, the fool, the emperor

sunghoon is very stubborn about tradition, most of his decisions are based on his past and romanticizing the past. from this i believe that sunghoon would most likely be a dragon type. he would most likely be a dual type dragon-steel, as he can be resilient to what does not align with his beliefs, it can seem lik denial.

the only dragon-steel legendary is dialga, a member of the creation trio. dialga is very strong, being able to control time which fits nicely if sunghoon is heavily influenced by time related themes such as the past, present, and future.

sunoo is very hasty, it feel impatient but he seems to think or at least have a good idea about what is happening. sunoo also seems to be someone who moves very fast, but still, it seems to work out for him in the end. this best suits a water type pokemon. as for dual types, he most likely does not have one.

unlike the other members, there are a few pokemon that meet these conditions. to narrow it down, the background behind sunoo as a pokemon has something to do with fresh beginnings after a painful end. based on this suicune is the best option, since it is said to purify water!

as a general rule of thumb: it’s best to stay away from personality quizzes (such as truity & IDRlabs) while they do serve a brief overview of the types, it’s not a tool that types accurately. i myself got acquainted with the topic through spotify podcasts [x] [x] but there are also several decent books on the subject. Day 7 of Ode to Phoenix

Whoa, I can't believe we're already a week into celebrating this glorious, gorgeous woman. Talk to Me Ch. 15 is on track for a late night/early morning finish so I didn't want to miss a day of recognizing our girl.

As promised, this one will be shorter. It's a Phoenix headcanon. As you can probably tell, I've personality typed the heck out of these characters and that includes their Enneagrams. And what better day of Ode to Phoenix than Day 7 to celebrate her being an Enneagram Type 7!

I was talking to @melodiousoblivionao3 about this, and I think there is definitely a strong case for Phoenix to be a Type 3. I'll lay out how I type, and we can all discuss! It can be easy to mistype based on characteristics, so I tend to prefer starting with the triads: Gut (anger), Heart (shame), and Head (fear). In very simple terms, the triad determines what drives or motivates you. 8s, 9s, and 1s are driven by gut; 2s, 3s, 4s, by heart; and 5s, 6s, and 7s by head.

Of these, I feel that Phoenix is most driven by head (fear). And, specifically as a 7, the desire to avoid/distract from her inner world. The movie doesn't give us a lot to go off of in terms of what drives most of the younger pilots, but Phoenix is always the first to jump into something whether it's a game of pool, song at the piano, or football competition. One of the things that sets her apart from the other pilots is that although she is determined to go on the mission, she doesn't crave recognition (maybe why she doesn't get as much love as she deserves?). Natasha is the only one to own her mistakes during the debriefs with Maverick and notably never tries to impress him during the hops beyond flying capably within the parameters.

What clinches her being a 7 for me is that she operates through knowledge (also head.) I think it was @coraphoenix who pointed out that she is the only one who doesn't underestimate Maverick. She is also the only one who doesn't underestimate Bob. Instead, she sizes him up through a game of pool and waits until she's had a chance to fly with Maverick to make any judgments. She and Hangman also seem to be the fastest at processing information and determining outcomes, which keeps them a step ahead of everyone.

As a 7, Phoenix's key traits are according to Truity:

Which means, she shares many of the same qualities as the Type 8. The 7w8 typically appears tougher and more career-driven than other Sevens. The 7w8 is confident, assertive, and encouraging. They harness the 8’s bravado, becoming persuasive, assertive, and competitive. Often starting things they don’t finish, they still value having a good time over gaining power. Hangman is a Type 8, imo, so this last part explains why the two of them actually work really well together.

hello , i wanted to ask what means " 5w6 " ?

That's an enneagram! It's a personality test and I personally really like the Truity website for that! You have 9 enneagram types in total and all of them have a core desire and fear, along with a subtype. For example, I'm a type 2 but my wing is a 3 (that's what that "w" stands for). I took the test again to try explaining it better:

Just to be clear, I am indeed a 2w3, not a 7w8! The only reason why I got a type 7 is because ever since I started college I became a lot more confident and open with myself and others.

Regardless, what kind of sucks about these tests is that they're stuck behind a paywall so this is how I like to research - I know my mbti, I do the enneagram test and check that circle up there. See how 7 is the highest? And the numbers next to them, 6 and 8 would be the wings. Since 8 is higher than the 6, that would mean the enneagram is 7w8! You can't be a 7w2 for example, you can only have a wing that's right next to your own. When I'm curious about my own personality type (ENFP 2w3) I usually look it up on Google and there are quite a few articles about it and honestly, they're all pretty accurate.

There is also the chance that you get an enneagram that doesn't necessarily "belong" with your mbti. For ENFP's I feel like the most common ones are 7 and 2, when was the last time you saw an ENFP 5w4? Yeah, rare combos like that do exist but there might be a chance that you were either mistyped or you're cool like that and broke those boundaries!

I'm honestly horrible with explaining these things, I'm so sorry for this turning out the way it is. If someone can do a better job than me, by all means go for it!!
