Henry Justice Ford is a curiously under-remembered artist of the golden age. He is most known today, if he is known at all, for his work illustrating all twelve volumes of Andrew Lang’s Fairy Books (fun fact: despite being known as “Andrew Lang’s Fairy Books,” Lang’s wife Leonora Blanche Lang selected and translated all but the first in the series, The Blue Fairy Book).
This is a fairly thorough collection of Ford’s work from Dover Books: Maidens, Monsters & Heroes (2010). Ford’s ink work is bold and intricate, his color work luminous and often combining surprising colors (perhaps a side-effect of the reproduction process). I tend to gravitate more toward his inks, perhaps because there are more monsters there (though that Chimera is pretty fab). Ford, of all of these artists, seems to have delighted in monsters. Especially reptilian ones, though he has talent for grinning demons and goblins, too. So many of his monsters are downright strange, too — look at that Scylla! WTF?! He has quite an array of giants, as well. Longtime readers may recall my enthusiasm for his Arabian cyclops, which featured on the cover of A Natural History of Unnatural Things.
Unlike the other artists I’m looking at this week, Ford has a direct influence on Dungeons & Dragons. That affable looking giant with the club is the clear inspiration for Trampier’s cloud giant illustration in the Monster Manual and I think generally you can see a lot of resonance between the two artists, particularly in terms of framing and posing. Tramp’s pseudodragon seems to have a lot of Ford in it.
A tremendous artist, flipping through any of his collections is like looking through a Victorian Monster Manual.

Introducing the Sobek - Animalistic Terror
//:ERR: SEARCH_DATA<SOBEK>UNDEFINED //:ERR: SEARCH_DATA<BERSERKER>UNDEFINED //:ERR: SEARCH_DATA<BERSERKER_OMEGA> DATA RESTRICTED //:CLEARANCE_LEVEL: SERAPHIM //:PARSING: … … … //:GRANTED: WARNING: Knowledge granted beyond his point should be considered hazardous. Non-authorized persons viewing the data will be considered a data leak and thus dealt with by A.R.C. operatives appropriately.
-
Rampaging across the battlefield comes the Sobek, the most extreme representation of A.R.C.'s design philosophy. The Sobek is an apex on the battlefield, tearing through anything that stands in it's way, ripping enemy combatants limb from limb with it's unshackled rage.
The Sobek's license provides pilots with everything they'd require to turn the battlefield into a slaughter house, barbed Lock-blades and Lashers help pin mechs down, Ripper Jaws and Strider Talons tear apart even the toughest targets, and the Death Roll module will eviscerate whatever or whoever remains.
However, be warned pilots, the Sobek's hunger for battle and blood must be sated, if not, it may turn inward to find what it wants.

You know, thinking about it... I love the idea that Elphaba thinks she's a wizard but is actually a sorcerer. She has a natural gift that is hard to control. She works hard, studies even harder, but learning in that manor still doesn't come naturally to her. Not until she finds the power within her and really accepts herself. 🖤💚

Sidney Sime is another under-appreciated artist of the Golden Age, which is a shame, because he’s one of the strangest. This is Sidney Sime: Master of the Mysterious (1980), one of only four collections of his work, all out of print and all rather pricey. During his lifetime, he wasn’t terribly prolific — his largest, most well-known body of work was illustrating (and inspiring) early stories by Lord Dunsany. The largest extant collection of Sime’s work remains at Dunsany Castle.
Sime’s rather hard to pin down stylistically, I think. He often reminds me of Harry Clarke, who was a contemporary, but while Sime isn’t hesitant to be highly detailed or ornamental, he often combines line work and washes in ways that are surprising. These contrasts look like cells of cartoon animation, and give many of his illustrations a curiously anachronistic feeling. It’s so odd, but I can picture so many of these drawing moving.
Some really great stuff here. “The Incubus” is jaw-dropping in its subtly and its atmosphere, definitely a favorite. The castle of the Gibbelins and the house of the Gnoles are both nicely horrific (and are important influences on RPGs). Lots of skulls, lots of dragons, lots of weird lumpy creatures. I love how, like the Dunsany stories they illustrate, the art seems to depict mythology from an alternate world, free of the centuries of symbols and associations of our own. This makes Sime sometimes feel obscure, but also, as the title says, establishes him as a master of mysterious.
