V V fanfic below V V
“The wolf can be anybody.”
For the ex-thieving rogue, not many myths and curses fazed him. He held a strong belief that such things didn’t exist; why would they? They were nothing more than cheap fairy tales, told time and time again by fortune tellers and voodooists to gain a quick buck from some paranoid schmuck. No matter what he saw, he would tell himself, he would never fall victim to believing such stupid trickery for someone else’s monetary gain.
Not unless he had substantial evidence, anyway.
“It has to be someone in Corona,” Rapunzel thought out loud, a hand cupping her cheek. “That monster finder wouldn’t be here otherwise… but I can’t think of who possibly would hold… a deep-seated anger… Everyone in Corona is so- happy!” A huff of air left her, her hand moving to push a loose bit of hair behind her ear.
Rapunzel and Eugene had taken it into their own hands to find the apparent werewolf that had infiltrated the Kingdom’s walls, at least before the monster finder could- seeing as she had it in her plans to ‘destroy it’, or so she had mentioned. Rapunzel believed that, no matter who the werewolf was or what they did, they didn’t deserve to be killed, especially if it was a citizen of Corona. It was in her best interest to keep the creature safe, and, if she could, help them manage their curse.
“Listen, Blondie,” Eugene began, looking over at his girlfriend with a look of concern painting his face, “sometimes… people hold things in, and sometimes we don’t pick up on those things.” A hand moved onto Rapunzel’s shoulder as he stood in place, his leather boots crunching against the rough grass beneath them. “And like the monster… finder… person said, it can be anybody! We don’t have long until the sun’s down, and it’s the final night of the full moon… We might have to postpone the search, sunshine.” There was a glimmer of sympathy in his eyes as Rapunzel’s face dropped somewhat, another huff leaving her. “I don’t want her to find them first.” She tilted her head back up to look at Eugene, her eyebrows furrowed. “We’re going to search until we find them, or until we run out of time.”
There was a look of determination in her eyes.
He couldn’t tell her, not now.
Eugene had always had Rapunzel’s best interest in his heart, ever since he realised his love for her, even if it meant putting himself at risk.
So how could he tell her he was the monster she was so desperately trying to find?
“Rapunzel,” he took in a heavy breath of air, spotting the sun quickly setting in the distant sky. “I love you, and you know that I’d follow you anywhere, but this isn’t worth it,” He was cut off by Rapunzel’s insistent glare, staring him down right to his very core. They both knew she wouldn’t budge on the idea, and it was putting pressure on him. How could he get her out of the forest, with nobody else around, on the very outskirts of the Kingdom, without getting angry at her, in the next few minutes?
“Why do you want to leave so badly, Eugene?” She finally spoke, her face softening.
“Well-” Cutting him off again, Rapunzel continued, “is there something you’re not telling me? Or are youuuu the werewolf?” With a playful grin on her face, it was clear the comment was in a joking manner, however painfully accurate she may have unintentionally been.
“Wha-hat?” With an awkward laughter buried in his words, Eugene’s face contorted into one of nervousness, though subtle. He looked away from her for a second, using that brief moment to reassure himself. ‘She doesn’t know, she’s just making a joke. It’s just a joke. You’re okay.’
It had been their trip to the Dark Kingdom that started it all.
That wave of anguish, the dismay that comes with learning your whole life was a facade, it almost broke him. Learning you’re the lost prince, destined to be the holder of the Moonstone, is a lot of weight on a man.
The spirit of the wolf had come to him in a moment of distress, where he had no other possible options, where he believed he had been the one to betray the love of his life, the one person that gave him hope for a brighter future. Where he believed he had thrown all of it away, in one short, brief moment.
It told him it could show him how to fix everything, how to find himself and bring back that happy life, of fun memories and days with his sunshine. How to feel like he was finally in control of his own life.
All he had to do was let it happen.
“Of course I’m not! I’m insulted you’d even think such a thing, honestly,” he scoffed, flicking his hair in a dramatic moment of comical offence, “a blow to my ego. My reputation, Rapunzel, my reputation!” The joke went on, an attempt to lighten the mood before he continued to try and get Rapunzel as far from the forest as he possibly could. The soft laughter that left her lips was almost relieving, before his eyes set on the sinking light of the sun behind her once more. “...Okay, well, would you look at that, the sun’s almost set, the werewolf’ll be out soon, and I, personally, don’t want you to get hurt, and I don’t fancy being mauled by the world’s biggest dog-person either, so let’s just-” He planted a hand on her back, gently putting pressure on her to try and nudge her in the direction they came in.
She wouldn’t budge.
“Rapunzel,” he began, his face dropping as he looked back at the sky one last time. It had lost that orange glow of sunset, and taken a deep, murky blue as the moon rose. He was rapidly running out of time.
“No, Eugene. We’re going to find it, please, if we just keep trying, please-”
“For crying out loud, Rapunzel, we need to go!”
Her face dropped in woeful distress, Eugene immediately realising what he had done from her face alone. He had lost his temper with her, raising his voice and shouting at her in one final, desperate attempt to get her out of here. “Rapunzel, I.. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean,” he stammered, gritting his teeth as he saw the moon’s light begin to hit the ground behind them.
He paused, straightening his back and looking away from his girlfriend. “I.. I have to go, Rapunzel.” He furrowed his eyebrows before quickly beginning to step away from her, back in the direction they had come from.
“Eugene, wait!” With an outstretched hand, Rapunzel grabbed at Eugene’s deep purple jacket, pulling the fabric back from his frame.
There was one distinct feature to someone with lycanthropy, in the shape of a small, blue paw-print blemish on the skin of the person. This blemish could be found on either their face, neck, arms or hands.
For Eugene, it was the neck.
As the fabric pulled away from him, the neck of the jacket followed with it, revealing the bare skin of the ex-thief’s neck.
Revealing the striking blue blemish, forever staining his skin.
It didn’t take long until both of them had realised what had been revealed, Rapunzel gasping and letting go of him while Eugene stumbled to get his jacket back on, a look of horror overcoming his face.
“Eugene.. You’re.. You’re-”
“L-Listen, Blondie, I can explain, it’s not- it’s-” He held his hands out in a panic, heavy breaths escaping him as he frantically tried to pull together an explanation. “It- it was in the Dark Kingdom, and I was going through a lot of things, and- and-” He was cut off by Rapunzel, her voice soft and quiet. There was a horrid tone of betrayal, one that cut deep into Eugene’s heart.
“Why didn’t you tell me, Eugene?”
Everything went quiet for a moment, almost as if time froze where they stood, the light of the bright moon beaming down directly onto Eugene’s back as Rapunzel stared at him.
“I didn’t want.. I didn’t want you getting hurt- I-” He was cut off by something else this time, a sharp pain running through his entire body as the night sky caved his attempts at restraint.
With one final noise of distress escaping him, his teeth sharpened in his mouth, a flick of saliva running down from the corner of his lips. His usually bright and bold brown eyes were replaced with a horrific shade of red, overtaking the entirety of them, glowing bright in contrast to the dark forest surrounding him. All Rapunzel could do was watch on in horror, witnessing her beloved boyfriend and redeemed criminal turn into the rampaging monster she had been trying to find.
She had no idea that it was next to her the whole time. And for so long, too…
It was over in an instant, his entire body almost exploding in a sudden transformation of tearing fabric and sprouting fur.
The creature that stood where Eugene once was glared down at Rapunzel, a nasty growl rumbling in its throat.
Rapunzel was frozen in place.
The werewolf was Eugene Fitzherbert.
