“Huh? I didn’t see you.” The man with the white hair said casually, holding a drippy head by the scruff of their scalp – having torn it clean off the body that now lay gushing in a pool of its own sticky red insides. Still warm but lifeless.

You’d been hiding amongst the other remains. Your mind struggling to cope with the chaos surrounding you, so lost that the thought of running away hadn’t even had the time to surface yet – having left you wading around in the blood and guts aimlessly – soaked through and through with death and chilled to your own weary brittle bones.

The end was imminent, and you couldn’t wrap any of your thoughts together to either accept or deny it.

He dropped the head in his fist with an unceremonious splash and took long strides – in front of you sooner than you could bat an eye, much less crawl away or decide if you were going to try and fight him off before it was too late – before he had his long fingers curled around your throat, lifting you up off your feet.

“No wonder~” He laughed. “You’re so weak; I couldn’t sense your cursed energy at all~”

He was frivolous while you cacked for air, kicking your feet beneath you, trying to pry his hand from your neck with such weak effort it was pitiful to watch.

And yet he remained unfazed by the pathetic struggle, only offering a slant of his head while eyeing you up and down – his orbs going from a stark neon to a simple sky blue as he released his technique. Holding you up simply with his own sheer strength.

“Hm…” He hummed then, tilting his head to the other side, now with a thoughtful pout on his lips. He brought his other hand up to rub his chin as though he was debating something. “Be a shame to kill you, really…”

You remained gasping for breath as he mused – but only for another short moment until you felt him pause in his squeezing, loosening the chokehold right before your head could squish free from the rest of your body.

“You’ll make such a pretty new trophy.”

He was smiling, but it was far from kind – though he let go of your throat entirely, letting you drop to your hands and knees, spluttering with coughs – staring at your own reflection in the crimson bath beneath you. Able to spot how terribly panicked you looked before you felt him loop an arm around your stomach – lifting you, then beaming the two of you away.

You’re still in shock when you’re dropped to a different floor someplace else only a moment later – and though the marble is much colder than the blood you’d been sitting in prior, it isn’t the reason you’re shaking. Rather, it’s the recurring flashes of fellow curses being leveled like trampled grapes – in the dozens by a single sorcerer who hadn’t even broken a sweat. One who’d bore a smile the entire time.

“Come on now, pretty curse-” The man dismissed, seemingly completely disconnected from the turmoil of your trauma. “Say hie to your new home~”

This time he grabbed you by your tunic, holding it by the neck as he dragged you along further into the room with him until he sat down on a plush sofa there – pulling you into his lap to straddle him.

You didn’t resist – you didn’t do anything – shell-shocked into a plaint stillness while struggling to accept the truth behind all the stickiness that had your skin coated and shivering with growing cold.

His face was also splattered with different shades – some red, some blue, some purple. You wonder what shade yours was with a tremble in your throat as he reached out to thumb your chin, angling it as he got in close with his lips tugged in a grin.

“The last pet I kept ended up dying of hunger. It didn’t behave right, so I had to starve it.” He revealed – bright eyes gleaming – rendering you further scrambled in thought, unable to grasp what he was saying or that he was even talking to you.

You just blinked blankly in return.

“Can you talk? Or are you an even weaker curse than I thought?” He asked then – cocking his head down and sideways – leering up at you with an eerie twinkle that made you tense with a small whimper.

You hiccupped, lip quivering – suddenly reeled back to reality by the bite of his blunt nails digging into the soft flesh of your hips. “Uhm- I…” Your voice was weak in your throat, breaking before it amounted to much more, feeling so thin under his heavy gaze while he peered at you without blinking. “I talk…” was all you were able to squeak out in the end.

“Oh- good. I was afraid you couldn’t understand me. But I see~ you’re just in shock ‘cause I obliterated all your friends.” His smile widened, and you paled even more in light of it.

Swallowing thickly. Now with the numbness of the shock finally dying down, you were allowed to process your fear more entirely – resulting in tears welling and running down your cheeks in quick rivulets – breaths picking up speed until they tripped into each other on their way free.

“Oh- don’t cry~” He chuckled, watching you break down – your swiveled eyes looking at your blood-soaked hands, trembling at the sight.

He ran his hand up from your chin to cup your face, his smile tugged into a toothy smirk – amused by your meltdown – and even happier when your eyes snapped to return his, glistening with fear and the blitz of panic.

“Be a good little curse for me, and I won’t hurt you like I did the others.” He offered suggestively, planting his forehead against yours while getting lost in that beautiful look riddling your face.

Completely relaxed and comfortable – flirty as he rubbed the small of your back almost soothingly, gliding up slowly beneath the fabric of your tunic. He used no pressure – being featherlight with fine fingertips – as though in mockery of how he’d easily reached in and torn hearts out of ribcages only a moment earlier.

You swallowed again. Feeling caged by the serene blue staring back at you.

“How… how do I do that?” You asked him timidly, and he marveled at how human you looked – chewing your bloated lip with such pretty misty eyes peeled at him.

You weren’t much of a curse at all, he thought with another laugh – licking his teeth at how obediently you sat in wait on his lap – more like a little animal than anything else – wounded in the hands of its hunter.

“Follow my lead.” He answered your question hotly, his eyes glinting with something playful but equally sick and sadistic as he stroked your lips with his blood-stained fingers – eagerly watching your little nose twitch at the scent while he pushed two of the digits onto the wet bed of your tongue. “Can you do that, pretty curse?”

You offered only an uneasy whimper, tasting the cursed blood with cinched brows.

It visibly aroused him, making his lips tug at the corners – leveling you with his keen stare as though daring you to do anything but submissively lick the fingers clean.

There’s always been something very sweetly satisfying about forcing a curse to please him. Due to them being purely selfish in nature, it becomes torture in and of itself to make them serve anyone other than themselves.

But strange as it was, observing you, he couldn’t decide if it pained you the same way he’d come to recognize after breaking his many previous pets…

Maybe you’re just a little slow on the uptake. You do seem a little confused, as though his cruelty has you asking yourself why at every turn instead of making you feel the normal rage that most curses fall instinctively to. They all always look at him with such searing hatred, but you’re just… he can’t exactly place the expression as you allow his fingers to rest on your tongue.

Suppose… well… you look as though you’re getting a little shy.

It's a funny thing to witness in a curse. It would have been normal if it were chagrin, but it doesn’t really have that temper to it.

“Wow~ I didn’t know curses could be this humble~” He drawled then, still playing with the wet warmth of your plushy tongue. “Most of you put up a fight- too proud to understand your own good.” He squinted his eyes, finding it more and more strange how you hadn’t tried to bite him yet – even as he split his digits like a scissor and traced the points of your teeth. “Guess you’re just better at knowing your place, huh?”

He withdrew from your mouth and dropped the hand to your collar – dancing the pale spit-slicken digits there as though to remind your throat of its former grip around it.

You flinched when he pulled you onto his bulge; breath caught in your throat and kept there as he pressed his smile onto your lips in a kiss.

His chest rumbled with something guttural, sighing into your mouth with rowdy hunger.

You fumbled, taken aback – but he followed until you accepted it. Then his hand ran further up your back, lifting your shirt on the way.

“Up with your hands~” He guided, and you, though trembling and confused, listened all the same – raising your arms so he could pull the article off over your head. “Good curse~” He purred – right before laying his tongue out flat on your newly exposed skin, licking along the blood stains on your chest.

You’d probably cringe if it didn’t horrify you first. How he moaned at the taste and strengthened his hold, grinding up into you with his hips – pressing you down against himself.

Lifting his head, he attacked your lips again and you allowed it, tasting the blood left on both your tongues as he pushed his inside along yours – exploring your mouth with sounds so hungry they made you whimper in return.

Your bottoms were ripped off suddenly, leaving you naked while cold fingers peppered over the fat of your hips until stationing themselves there firmly, carding into the plush and rolling you over his clothed bump. Hissing at the feel, he bit your lip. And while you whined from the sting it left, he tore open his jacket and wrung it off fast, tossing it somewhere behind you.

Beneath it, he revealed a pristine silk button-up – as white and shiny as his hair – looking out of place against the blood splatter on his skin.

“Come on, make yourself useful-” He groaned with heat, nodding suggestively to his chest, taking your hands and placing them close to his throat – again, as though trying to tempt you into doing something stupid.

But you ignore the bait, undoing the buttons instead of throttling his neck – as though the thought didn’t even cross your mind.

He kept you riding his crotch – his mouth going to your chest again, sucking your nipples into his mouth. Making your job hard, where your hands kept stilling with the need to clutch something.

But eventually, all his buttons were done up – opening to a firm torso of chiseled alabaster abs. No scars to prove he’d ever struggled. Just fair skin lacking a single lasting blemish.

“Like what you see?” He snickered lowly, having caught you staring.

You didn’t know what to say, but either way, any words were caught in your throat as he spun you on your back, bearing down on you with his hand returning to your neck.

He’d found it strange, but now he found it worrying. Vision clouded with heat though still trustworthy, he couldn't help but conclude that you weren’t going to fight him at all.

But that just didn’t make any sense.

“What makes you so eager to please, huh?” He asked then, a lilt in his voice as he crept closer – leaning until his bangs brushed your forehead. “What type of curse are you, exactly…”

You pressed your lips together, bowing your head – having dreaded the question.

“It’s embarrassing, I’d rather not say…” You tried, but the sorcerer wouldn’t allow it – holding you captive with his eyes.

“I wasn’t asking.”

You trembled some but had it on your tongue, and then he tightened the fist on your throat and squeezed the truth out of you.

“Weakness...” You finally let slip, feeling the humiliation tickle up your spine – making you goosefleshed where you lay naked beneath the all-powerful six-eyes whose stare only urged for more detail, compelling you to indulge him.

Your lip quivered but then gave in yet again.

“Made from the self-loathing of weaklings whose only method of survival is to manipulate the strong into pitying them.”

The shame of it made you go flushed.

“It’s... the life of a leach.” You balled your little fists and nibbled your lip. “It’s pathetic…”

It took a while for him to accept it – stunned by what a ridiculous type of curse you revealed yourself to be. But then he loosened his grip again like before, humming out a light chuckle he couldn’t help.

“You’re the only one I didn’t kill.” He said then, audibly and visibly finding it very funny.

You blinked, confusion taking your face – once again looking up at him and regretting it, feeling the weight of those severe comet blues rest heavy on you – life-threatening in and of themselves.

“Seems being pathetic saved your life.” He stated – as though in a compliment.

You weren’t sure of its intentions, finding yourself to be so very small lying there beneath him while confessing to being such a lowlife.

“But there’s more to it, isn’t there?” He cocked a brow, leaning in even closer until his nose bumped yours. “You feed off of the strong. Isn't that right, pretty curse?” His voice edged with something smug and something carnal – watching your round eyes hang off his. “You want me. Isn't that right?”

You took a moment but then nodded real pitifully – your lips brushing each other. He could see so clearly now, swirling in your big eyes – how badly you wanted him.

He chuckled under his breath, whispering against your lips, “Behave, and I’ll make sure to keep you well-fed.”

Sexual Assault TW - Please, don’t feel pressed about answering this, if the topic would make you uncomfortable; I am just curious on your perspective as you have had excellent advise/opinions for other people

Do you think there’s ever a cutoff point for being assaulted/sexually coerced? Like, how many times it can happen to a person?

Because I’ve had about eleven situations where I’ve said no, or that I wasn’t interested, and that I didn’t want to do anything, but each time has escalated into something coerced and I feel guilty and give in, or something more physically demanding

I think I might just be experiencing a wave of post evangelical upbringing guilt, but I’m starting to doubt that so many things could happen to me so many different times, and that I didn’t hit a cutoff point or something like that

I'm very sorry to hear this has happened to you.

there is, unfortunately, not a limited number of times that a person can experience sexual violence or coercion. in fact, it's unfortunately common for people who have experienced abuse before to fall victim to it more than once. this is called revictimization, which you can read more about here:

it's crucial to understand that being revictimized does not, ever, mean that you're at fault for experience abuse from multiple people. as this article outlines, it is most often happens when a survivor of previous violence develops responses to that trauma - such as dissociation, alcohol and substance abuse, distorted perceptions, low self-esteem, risky behaviors, cognitive accommodation to on-going violence, learned helplessness or passivity in the face of danger, willingness to tolerate maltreatment in order to avoid abandonment, adaptation to socioeconomic stressors and discrimination, list copy pasted directly from the above article - that others are able to take advantage of. again, this absolutely does not make recurring violence the fault of the person being harmed; that responsibility always lies with the person who has done harm.

I understand that the evangelical upbringing primes you to feel responsible for these things happening to you, and that it can be extremely difficult to unlearn. please remember that nothing you could have done could justify sexual assault, and that you don't deserve any of the pain you've experienced. there is no "reason" this happens to you except that people have autonomously made the choice to take advantage of you, which is beyond your control and not your fault. you can't change the past actions of others, but I hope you are able to be kind to yourself in the present and have the support that you deserve.

Tw: hate crimes, transphobia, pretty traumatic things Yves went through in his youth, body modification, violence, gore

Yves had breast augmentations before.

He had never truly identified himself as a woman, but he liked how certain dresses would look on him if he was well-endowed up top. He felt pretty and content with how he looked in front of the mirror after years of severe self-hatred.

It allowed him to bring back a bit more cash, but this wasn't his main motive to go under the knife. In fact, this observation disgusted him. Yves purely wanted a larger chest because it personally made him happy in his bleak bubble.

Though, it wasn't worth the sudden uptick of harassment and maltreatment from others around him. Men would predictably attack him every time he blinked, act entitled towards his body, and fucked him over in more ways than he could count. As if there was a massive bullseye target was painted onto him after he graduated from no bra to a C cup.

But what surprised him was that the women degraded him much worse than the men. They used to be indifferent to him at best, silently disgusted at him for being effeminate at worst. But as soon as he showed up with a feature that brought him closer to passing as a Cis woman, Yves lost almost all of their neutrality. Sometimes, they would set him up to be harmed by other men. Their hatred for Yves wouldn't be discrete anymore, they would call him hurtful names and slurs, accusing him of being a depraved sexual predator, even get into vicious physical fights with him, and end most nights with clumps of ripped hair and blood.

It was dangerous to reveal that he perceived himself as male while looking how he always desired to. So he lived a good chunk of his life under an identity that doesn't match how he felt inside. Yves had to train his vocal cords to sound feminine enough to not attract any more negative attention than he already had by existing somewhat authentically. He likes accessories that cover up his Adam's apple while flattering his form, Yves also likes styling his hair so that it takes the attention off his masculine features; covering his jaw and concealing his neck.

It was only when he caught himself in a particularly horrible altercation that his implants ruptured, spilling its silicone contents into his body and poisoning him slowly. But that wasn't as horrible as when he limped to the mirror right after merely escaping being beaten to death. He could ignore the wounds, bruises, and swelling, those can heal.

Yves was reduced to tears when he saw that he was ugly once more. His breasts were deformed and strange lumps started appearing elsewhere on his battered body. He couldn't afford to remedy it and neither was he mentally strong enough to handle the torment he was to face the following days. All his beautiful clothes are simply a reminder that he's a freak, an abomination of nature so atrocious, that the world tries everything in its power to kill despite Yves doing nothing except existing.

He swapped his stylish and gorgeous tops for baggy sweaters and turtlenecks. Anything above the shins was thrown out, likewise for clothing articles that revealed more than his face and hands. Gone, all of it must go. With a heavy heart and eyes puffy from incessantly crying, Yves burnt them all.

Yves was powerless back then. If the world didn't think that he deserved to wear it, then he simply had no right to. And he hated it, they made him feel like mere dirt no matter what he did. He couldn't do anything for himself without being unfairly punished for it.

He has moved on from that stage in life. He had matured and found peace within himself. Yves had fixed himself and he had learned how to let go. It's been a long time, the details are hazy to him now, and that is probably for the better.

But only if you knew what he went through, you would understand that he wasn't vacantly staring out of disapproval when you told him you wanted to have breast augmentation, just like he did when he was a fucked up young man. The long period of silence coupled with his empty emerald eyes unwaveringly trained onto yours wasn't due to judgment of your desire, but it was to manage whatever the fuck you dug back up he buried inside him by asking that one damned question.

After an uncomfortable pause, he would seemingly snap out of it and go ahead to tell you about all the risks that might come with it. In the end, he appears neutral, even supportive of the idea if he deems it beneficial to your self-esteem. All this while, you would never know about his own experience with it, Yves doesn't see the need to disclose it to you.

He had learned to let go of the past, making him see everything through an unbiased lens. You are not him, and you will never go through what he had to.

Yves makes sure of it.

In the post you made debunking the claim of Ares being the protector of women, you have written that secrecy and disposal of the child born point to rape. Can you please elaborate a bit as I'm having a hard time understanding how exactly? Especially with the latter, is it because the conception of the child happened without the permission of the father of the woman (I've heard even if woman slept willingly, without her father's assent then it would have been considered rape)?

There's a lot to discuss in here, and I'm afraid a Tumblr post from someone who's not a classicist won't cover all that needs to be addressed, so for further reading I recommend Rape in Antiquity (1997) edited by Susan Deacy and Karen F. Pierce, and their follow-up Revisiting Rape in Antiquity (2023), Edited by Susan Deacy, José Malheiro Magalhães and Jean Zacharski Menzies, a series of collected essays regarding Sexual Violence in Greek and Roman Worlds.

Broadly speaking, our modern concept of Rape (criminal act defined by the lack of consent during sexual intercourse) does not have a strict ancient greek equivalent (bearing in mind that "ancient greece" covers large periods of history where attitudes almost certainly differed from time to time and from place to place). Nor is there a greek match found for the english word 'rape' – derived from the latin rapere "seize, carry off by force", which was used for both people (in the sense of abduct or kidnap, only rarely denoting sexual violence) and objects (in the sense of plunder). The latin words most commonly used to denote rape were stuprare "defile, disgrace, rape," which is related to stuprum "illicit sex" (also to stupere "to be stunned, stupefied", origin of the word stupid) and violare "maltreat, profane, infringe, violate".

In ancient greek several words could be used to denote what we today would call rape: Biazomai (βιάζομαι - inflict violence, force, constrain), Harpazo (ἁρπάζω - snatch away, seize, carry off; from where the Harpies get their name, later used to refer to the christian rapture), Hybrizo (ὑβρίζω - outrage, dishonor, affront, treat as an inferior; related to hybris, a complicated word), Moicheia (μοιχεία ‐ adultery, illicit sex) or Phthora (φθορά - ruin, damage, destroy) were all words that, to a greater or lesser extent, were used to refer to violent or illicit sex. These last two concepts, though intimately related to our definition of rape, can be considered distinctly, especially when approximating a definition of "rape" in the classical world: e.g. the forcing of a slave was not morally wrong or illegal, while consorting with a free married woman was. Willingness did not define the crime, rather status and ownership did.

Regarding this last point, women's sexual and reproductive rights belonged to their kyrios (κύριος - guardian, master, head of the household), generally fathers and husbands, but failing that brothers (e.g. Apemosyne and Althaimenes) or sons (e.g. Penelope and Telemachos). Moreover a woman's virtue and reputation were primarily linked to her sexual activity: chastity, modesty, shame and obedience being her main ethical concerns. Therefore, when it came to sexual relationships outside of marriage, it was narratively "preferable that a woman should be raped [be unwilling] rather than seduced" (The Portrayal of Rape in New Comedy, Karen F. Pierce), thus preserving the moral virtue of "respectable" characters like goddesses or heroines. This is not to say every sexual interaction in greek mythology is presented as a rape, that obviously varies from telling to telling and depends on the myth, but it explains the narrative predilection for it. It should also be remembered that plenty of these unions are ambiguous as to whether rape or seduction take place, primarily because it's not usually of interest to the narrator unless the virtue of the women is being discussed (e.g. the centuries long discussions on Helen that survive to this day, and even then the distinction can be dismissed as irrelevant or nonexistent; "We think that it is unjust to carry women off. But to be anxious to avenge rape is foolish: wise men take no notice of such things. For plainly the women would never have been carried away, had they not wanted it themselves." – Hdt. Histories 1.4.2).

When it comes to panhellenic myth, sexual unions between gods and women are primarily framed as extramarital (beffiting a monogamous culture where gods' official consorts where to be found elsewhere), without the κύριος knowledge or consent (for a reversal see Hyg. Fabulae 129), and therefore under the umbrella of illicit sex (i.e. Rape). Recurring motifs are attached to these kinds of stories, which give us narrative context to identify (or at the very least be suspicious of) similar accounts in other myths where no explicit word denoting rape is used (as is most common in surviving works of mythography, that prioritise genealogy and gloss over instances of sexual assault). One of the most common tropes is that of exposure.

Myths of exposure in greek mythology usually come in three flavours. Either the child is exposed because of some prophecy (e.g. Paris or Oidipous), because it is born female (e.g. Atalanta or Iphis) or, in the majority of cases, because it is the product of rape (see below). As you noted the most frequent reason given for the exposure is fear of the κύριος discovery, who, in instances where he does find out about the rape, either does not believe the victim or is indifferent to her plight, and in either case kills her or attempts to do so (some examples below):

[Apemosyne: killed by her brother Althaimenes after she is raped by Hermes] "Not much later he became the murderer of his sister. Hermes loved her, but she ran away, and he could not catch her (for she was faster than him at running). So he spread freshly stripped hides along her path, and when she was coming back from the spring, she slipped on them and was raped. She told her brother what happened, but he thought the god was just an excuse, so he kicked her to death." (Apollod. 3.2.1)

[Auge: sentenced to death by her father Aleos after she is raped by Herakles] "After Auge was raped by Herakles, she concealed her baby in the sanctuary of Athena, whose priestess she was. But the land remained barren, and the oracles revealed that there was some ungodly thing in the sanctuary of Athena, so Auge was found out by her father, and he handed her over to Nauplios to be put to death. Teuthras, the ruler of the Mysians, received her from Nauplios and married her." (Apollod. 3.9.1)

[Psamathe: killed by her father Krotopos after she is raped by Apollo] "Psamathe the daughter of Krotopos got pregnant by Apollo [in Statius' Thebaid 1. 562-669 she is explicitly raped beside a river] and because she feared her father she exposed the child, whom she named Linos. The shepherd who received him raised him as his own, and one day the kings sheepdogs tore him apart. Maddened with grief, she was detected by her father, who [after she had bared her breasts and told him all] sentenced her to death, assuming she had been a harlot and lied about Apollo." (Conon. Narrations 19)

[Alope: killed by her father Kerkyron after she was raped by Poseidon] "Since Alope, daughter of Kerkyon, was very beautiful, Poseidon lay with her, and from this embrace she bore a child which she gave to her nurse to expose, since she did not know its father. When the child was exposed, a mare came and furnished it milk. A certain shepherd, following the mare, saw the child and took it up. When he had taken it home, clothed in its royal garments, a fellow shepherd asked that it be given to him. The first gave it without the garments, and when strife rose between them, the one who had taken the child demanding signs it was free-born, but the other refusing to give them, they came to king Kerkyon and presented their arguments. The one who had taken the child again demanded the garments, and when they were brought, Kerkyon knew that they were taken from the garments of his daughter. Alope's nurse, in fear, revealed to the king that the child was Alope's, and he ordered that his daughter be imprisoned and slain, and the child exposed. Again the mare fed it; shepherds again found the child, and took him up, and reared him, feeling that he was being guarded by the will of the gods." (Hyg. Fabulae. 187)

Not every account of exposure explicitly denotes rape (as mentioned before the nature of the union generally goes uncommented), and sometimes depending on the version seduction is to be better understood. Though both are interchangeable narrative-wise, frequently other details lead may us to suppose the stock character of the unwilling (raped) maiden is being portrayed, I'll use the example of Phylonome again:

"Phylonome, the daughter of Nyktimos and Arkadia, was wont to hunt with Artemis; but Ares, in the guise of a shepherd, got her with child. 1. Phylonome is explicitly mentioned as a huntress companion of Artemis (presumably sworn to chastity). The sexual vulnerablility of Artemis' companions is a common trope; see Kallisto, Daphne, Arethousa, Britomartis, Kyrene, Syrinx, Nikaia, Pholoe, etc.)

2. Ares transforms/disguises himself to approach her (perhaps the most common trope of all), and conceals his identity in the guise of a shepherd (a disguise otherwise used by Zeus to approach Mnemosyne; Ovid. Met. 6.103-128, Clement. Recog. 22)

3. After giving birth she casts her children into the river Erymanthos. The reasoning is the typical stock example, fear of her father, though in this case the form of infanticide is much more direct than exposure: she casts them into the river to drown. As usual with these stories the children are saved by divine intervention, and are nursed by an animal and later raised by shepherds.

Again, no verb denoting rape is ever explicitly used, yet the context of the story is enough to reasonably suppose it was considered as such. Other examples of myths where babies are exposed are listed below, many of them are explicitly rapes, almost all the rest can be inferred as such (I can't for my own sake provide references for all of them, so those interested must do their own research):

Koronis exposes Apollo's son Asklepios on a mountain near Epidauros according to a local legend, Psamathe exposes Apollo's son Linos, Antiope exposes Zeus' sons Zethos and Amphion, Alope exposes Poseidon's son Hippothoon, Akakallis exposes Apollo's son Miletos, Tyro exposes Poseidon's sons Pelias and Neleus, Kreousa exposes Apollo's son Ion, Pelopia exposes Thyestes' son Aigisthos, Auge exposes Herakles' son Telephos, Evadne exposes Apollo's son Iamos, and Phylonome "exposes" Ares' sons Lykastos and Parrhasios (this list is by no means meant to be exhaustive).

But aspd-culture, what "causes" ASPD?

Well, that's hard to say as it is commonly a mix of nature and nurture, and we can't say for sure "this set of things will cause ASPD". I can, however, explain some serious risk factors that, if you relate to them and have this disorder, may have been a part of why you developed it.

TW for heavy topics, as you might have guessed.

Just a heads up that, if you have the disorder, this one is gonna be a rough read. A lot of things that you were told throughout your childhood should be "normal" and maybe that you even thought were helping you are gonna pop up here as things that heavily increase the chances of ASPD, and we're not just talking about abuse and neglect, though of course that is the first one I'm gonna get into because it's the most obvious and well-known risk factor. Do expect some other information you might not have been ready to hear, though.

So the first one, as I said, is maltreatment as a child. This can include many kinds of abuse, including verbal, emotional, physical, sexual, etc. There are some reasons to believe that sexual abuse in particular, especially long-term sexual abuse, significantly increases the chance of developing ASPD.

The next is neglect, which also comes with a significant risk of developing ASPD, especially if the neglect is related to both the emotional and physical needs of a child. If the child experiences neglect in regards to needs such as food, hygiene, shelter, medical care, etc, but does not experience emotional neglect, the risk of developing ASPD appears to be somewhat less than if the child experiences both.

Maltreatment and neglect before the age of 18 months is especially significant when it comes to risk of developing ASPD. Not greeting an infant, not properly showing emotion and "appropriate affect" to an infant, and in particular a lack of attachment from their mother (either due to her literally being absent or just emotionally absent and disconnected) during the first 18 months of life are less commonly thought of forms of neglect that seriously affect secure attachment and increase the risk of ASPD.

The third and last of the "expected" answers to this question is witnessing intimate partner violence during childhood, especially regularly or across multiple partners. This shows the child two things: one is a fear of the aggressor as well a need to tiptoe around someone who should be a secure caregiver to avoid danger, and the second is a disbelief that the victim of the violence is able to protect them from danger, either because they appear weak (children are supposed to believe until a surprising age that their parents are superhero levels of strong and unable to be intimidated or weakened) in the eyes of the child, or because the child does not want to bother them with their issues when they already have their own abuse to deal with. This is especially true in cases where the child successfully controls the violence where the adult cannot (think those kids who use themselves as human shields because the abuser doesn't dare touch the child for various reasons), as it makes them feel they are responsible for protecting both themself and their caregiver, which disrupts normal attachment.

Here's where we get to the less obvious, more specific stuff that can lead to ASPD. There are multiple studies showing that an excess of television (I know, but hear me out bc this isn't about violence on tv), specifically when it is being used as a stand-in parent, significantly increases risk of developing ASPD even when other factors are controlled. As someone with ASPD, I can 100% see how this is valid. I used television to try and understand what normal people were like, and in turn, I experience a weird type of affective "empathy" when shown emotions in the over-acted way that they do on sitcoms, even though I do not experience that empathy when shown normally expressed emotions either on tv or in real life.

It also makes sense to me because generally when TV becomes a stand-in parent, the child is watching other children be cared for in ways that they are not in real life. The child may then be led to believe (as I was) that caring about other people is something made up for TV, since that's the only time they see it. Once the brain develops the understanding of fantasy vs reality, if TV is the only time that a child sees secure attachment styles, loving and attentive caregivers, etc, the brain may falsely place that in the fantasy category. That can lead to the thought processes and attachment issues that are typical of pwASPD, including feeling as though only they can be trusted to look out for themselves, that irl relationships are supposed to be transactional vs emotional, etc. So if you, like I did, attempted to watch sitcoms and such like Full House, Boy Meets World, etc. as a way of understanding what a normal family is supposed to be like or to understand how people are supposed to interact with each other, it is very possible that that was a contributing factor to the development of your ASPD.

Another somewhat surprising one: show of hands on how many pwASPD grew up hearing "it's just a joke", "you have no sense of humor", and "lighten up, we're just teasing you" - either from other kids, caregivers, or both?

Teasing is believed to be another major factor in developing ASPD. Teasing can cause a child to feel insecure, unsafe, and attacked when coming from people the child does not have a secure attachment to, and can decrease chances of the child developing that secure attachment later. This is especially true if the teasing came from caregivers, and of course has a higher chance of affecting the child if they attempt to set boundaries around it and aren't respected in that. This leads to the child feeling attacked by the people they are supposed to go to for comfort, and the more people who tease the child, the more likely the child is to feel unsafe around people as a whole - leading to the mindset that all people are dangerous and that the only person the child can trust is themselves. This teasing also causes self-imposed isolation as a way of feeling secure, which reinforces again that people are inherently unsafe and the only person the child can trust is themself. So if you tried to communicate your distress, discomfort, etc. about being teased and were dismissed, especially by your caregivers, then that significantly increased the chance that you would go on to develop ASPD.

One that is currently debated as to if it is a factor or not is the presence of an overprotective mother, specifically if that over-protectiveness became a point of contention between you two as you became more independent. It's surprising because a major characteristic of children who develop ASPD is independence, and most hold the belief that only they will protect them, but the reasoning is sound imo. The reason for this one, from those who believe it is associated with ASPD, is that when a child goes through the normal process of asserting independence, if they are met with either fear tactics as a form of control or heavy anxiety from their maternal figure, the child learns to be insecure, anxious, and obsessive about protecting themselves because they are being taught that the world is not safe/that they are not capable enough to explore that world. This can lead to an overblown expectation of the danger in the real world and leads to anxiety and distress around outside people. This anxiety and nervousness about the world can lead to the child seeing everyone and everything else as a threat, a mindset that is commonly associated with ASPD. If that anxiety is later disproven (as it inevitably will be unless the child experiences significant trauma - itself a risk factor for ASPD), this causes a rift in the attachment to the caregivers in question, and can make the child distrust their judgement and ability to assess risk, which again affects how safe the child feels with them. This is especially true if the connection to their caregivers is weakened by inconsistency, abuse, neglect, or other factors.

Any inconsistent behavior from caregivers, in fact, is another risk factor for developing ASPD. Children need to be able rely on consistency and routine to feel secure and develop normally. If they are constantly uncertain of how safe they may be with one or both caregivers, they are more likely to learn the idea that the only person they can rely on is themself.

Note that all of this is based on the current scientific understanding of ASPD's development, which deals significantly in both stigmatized and entirely false beliefs about the disorder. However, I focused here on points that made sense to me as someone with it, and did my best to explain how these contribute to ASPD through that lens in addition to the potentially biased medical lens. Our understanding of psychology in general is always changing, but these are some risk factors that are commonly believed at the time of writing to increase the chances of developing ASPD.

Also worth noting is that all of these factors do not need to be present to have ASPD develop. These factors significantly increase the risk of developing ASPD, especially when combined with a genetic component, but I am in no way claiming that you have to have all or even any of these to have ASPD.

I hope this helped you understand this disorder and the people with it a bit better. If you know someone with ASPD, maybe this can help you process why they hold the beliefs they do, and if you have ASPD and feel comfortable, feel free to show or explain some of this to your friends if you think it may help them understand where you're coming from a bit more.

A lot of the stigma, I think, comes from the fact that people don't get what we went through that led our brain to believe our antisocial traits were the best way to protect ourselves. For some, a little more light shed on that subject may be all they need to be more compassionate about it. And if you went into this with a negative outlook on pwASPD, I understand. It's easy in the world we're in to end up with that thought process. I appreciate you reading this far and ask you to read just a bit further to the end.

Try if you can to imagine what it's like to be a kid who has been through more than most adults have in their entire life and gotten so little help that that little child believes no one in the world protects anybody else. Imagine what kind of a world we were picturing growing up in because at the time, that was all we had ever seen. It would be horrifying, right? Even worse than the already pretty sucky world we currently live in. Imagine being a child and thinking that every other kid is going through the same stuff you are at home and handling it so much better. And for some, imagine knowing that some don't or that they get help, but not knowing why your life is different. Would you want to live in that world? Would you be able to keep the innocent, childlike wonder? Would you not be angry and hurt and confused as to why you didn't deserve the help and the life other kids get? Many of us lived thinking that from painfully early ages.

Is it so far-fetched for us to think we needed to protect ourselves if everyone was like the sample size of people we had met? Is it so shocking, then, that our subconscious thought that the traits we have now would be the only way to keep us safe? Is it really that surprising that a child so rarely, if ever shown kindness and empathy, might grow up not knowing how to replicate that for other people?

Most of us looked down the barrel of a proverbial (for some of us, literal) g*n as a toddler to young child, so we put on a vest. How were we supposed to know that other children had never felt that unsafe? How were we supposed to know that someone was supposed to help us when they never did?

Adams Misshandlungen und seine Bezugspersonen

Vor etwas mehr als einer Woche habe ich diesen Ask erhalten und sehr lange darüber nachgedacht, was ich darauf antworten will, weil ich sehr gerne meine Meinung dazu äußern möchte. Ich liebe nichts mehr, als über Spatort zu reden!

Meine Kurze Antwort™ ist: Ich denke nicht, dass sie sich des Ausmaßes von Rolands “strenger Erziehung” bewusst war — und eventuelle Körperstrafen kontextbedingt als “normal” betrachtet hat — und ihre Überraschung über Adams Aussage daher echt war.

Meine lange Antwort ist etwas komplizierter, erlaubt mit aber über etwas zu schreiben, das ich schon länger mal ausformulieren will: Adams Misshandlungen und die Bezugspersonen in seiner Kindheit und Jugend.

Ich habe es entsprechend getaggt, aber: TW für Kindesmisshandlung! Es geht primär um Adams Fall, aber auch reale Umstände werden dargestellt!

Vorweg ein Disclaimer: Ein Großteil dieser Recherche hat bereits vor einigen Jahren im Zuge meiner Masterarbeit stattgefunden und hatte einen etwas anderen Hintergrund. Ich bin keine Psychologin und arbeite auch nicht in dem Feld. Die aktualisierte Recherche hier beschränkt sich auf Literatur und Onlinequellen, auf die ich ohne Universitätszugang Zugriff habe.

Außerdem: Es ist deutlich mehr Essay geworden als geplant und ziemlich lang. Sorry dafür.

Kindesmisshandlung

Kindesmisshandlung ist ein furchtbares Thema, aber eines, über das dringend gesprochen werden muss. Der Aspekt, der dabei im Vordergrund steht ist natürlich die Prävention und damit verbunden auch das frühzeitige Erkennen von für Kindern und Jugendlichen gefährliche Situationen, damit ihnen geholfen werden kann.

Zunächst sollte aber geklärt werden, was unter Kindesmisshandlung zu verstehen ist und auf was ich mich hier genau beziehe.

1.1) Definition

Wie in so vielen Fällen, ist eine genaue Begriffsklärung nicht möglich. Es gibt keine einheitlichen deutschsprachigen oder internationale Standards der Begriffe Kindesmisshandlung bzw. child maltreatment. Bei einer kurzen online Suche werden die folgenden Vorschläge gebracht:

Bundesärztekammer: “[...]"Kindesmisshandlung" ist der Oberbegriff über Handlungen und Unterlassungen, die Kinder oder Jugendliche dem Risiko eines körperlichen oder psychischen Schadens aussetzen. Der Schaden muss dabei von den verantwortlichen Personen nicht beabsichtigt sein [...].”

Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO): “[...] Child maltreatment is the abuse and neglect that occurs to children under 18 years of age. It includes all types of physical and/or emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect, negligence and commercial or other exploitation, which results in actual or potential harm to the child’s health, survival, development or dignity in the context of a relationship of responsibility, trust or power [...].”

Ein Verständnis des Begriffs hängt immer auch vom Ziel des Geschriebenen ab und ist daher nicht einheitlich. In vielen Fällen wird — vor allem im deutschen Raum — der Schwerpunkt auf sexualisierte Gewalt gegen Kinder gelegt, was auch der Konnotation der Begriffe “Misshandlung” und “Missbrauch” zuzuschreiben ist.

Beholfen wird sich vielfach durch eine Unterteilung in verschiedene Untergruppen, die o.s in der Definition auch schon anklingen: Vernachlässigung, körperlicher Missbrauch, sexueller Missbrauch und emotionaler Missbrauch (vgl. Pekarsky 2022, Binder et al 2020 und Wißmann 2022). In einigen Fällen wird das Münchhausen-Stellvertreter Syndrom als gesonderte Form des Missbrauchs behandelt (Staubli 2007).

Hinweis: Bei jeder Definition — auch den Untergruppen — liegt die Annahme der Regelmäßigkeit zu Grunde. Ein einmaliger Vorfall wird i.d.R. nicht als Misshandlung verstanden, auch wenn er physische, psychische, oder rechtliche Konsequenzen haben kann. Des weiteren treten in den meisten Fällen mehrere Formen der Misshandlung auf. Eine klare Trennung in der Praxis ist selten möglich.

Eine Unterteilung hat allerdings den Vorteil, dass sie einen genaueren Rahmen steckt, denn in vielen Fällen sind die Grenzen fließend. Das dient vor allem der Abbildung der Realität und dem Versuch, präventive Ansätze zu finden, ist aber leider nicht so erfolgreich, wie man sich das wünschen würde.

Einer Pressemitteilung des Statistischen Bundesamts aus dem Jahr 2022 kann man entnehmen, dass das Niveau an Kindeswohlgefährdungen (siehe unten) weiterhin hoch ist und die Zahlen in den letzten Jahren gestiegen sind. Berücksichtigt wurden hier die letzten zehn Jahre, aber der Trend ist nicht neu (vgl. Wißmann 2022). Das hat nicht (nur) zur Ursache, dass sie Anzahl an Vorfällen gestiegen ist, sondern liegt vor allem daran, dass Stellen statistischer Erhebung auf immer mehr Vorfälle aufmerksam gemacht werden (ebd.).

Abgedeckt sind aber auch damit noch nicht alle Fälle. An vielen Stellen wird erwähnt — sodass es eigentlich schon Allgemeinwissen ist — dass die Dunkelziffer sehr hoch ist. Das ist mitunter auch durch die schwammige Definition und den Begriff der Kindeswohlgefährdung zu begründen.

1.2) Problematik “Kindeswohlgefährdung”

Kindeswohl und Kindeswohlgefährdung (folgend KWG) sind sog. unbestimmte Rechtsbegriffe. Das heißt, dass es keine klaren Grenzen und präzise Vorgaben gibt, ab wann das Kindeswohl als gefährdet gilt und dass im Einzelfall entschieden werden muss (vgl. Wißmann 2022, S. 6). Sowieso gilt es nicht, das Kindeswohl an sich zu sichern, sondern lediglich Schaden abzuwehren.

Laut Schone (2008) hat der Begriff des Kindeswohls zwei wichtige Aufgaben zu erfüllen, die durch die weite Definition ermöglicht werden sollen. So soll er zum einen „als Legitimationsgrundlage für staatliche Eingriffe und zum anderen als sachlicher Maßstab in gerichtlichen Verfahren, an dem sich die Notwendigkeit gerichtlicher Maßnahmen festmachen lässt” dienen.

Auch wenn damit das im Grundgesetz Artikel 6 festgelegte Recht der Eltern auf die Erziehung ihrer Kinder gewährleistet wird, werden so auch Lücken geschaffen, die Täter ausnutzen können und die möglichen Helfer:innen der Opfer die Hände binden, im Verdachtsfall zu handeln. Aber dazu später mehr.

Wichtig ist an dieser Stelle zu erwähnen, dass erst seit dem 8. November 2000 Kinder in Deutschland das Recht auf eine gewaltfreie Erziehung genießen (vgl. Unicef online 2020). Damit sollen vor allem Körperstrafen wie Ohrfeigen und das “Hintern-versohlen” verhindert werden.

1.3) Aktuelle Situation

Wie bereits erwähnt, gibt es keine genauen Zahlen. Die o.g. Pressemitteilung des Statistischen Bundesamts gibt einen Richtwert für die in den letzten 10 Jahren aufgetretenen Fälle von KWG und Fällen, in denen keine KWG vorliegt, aber Hilfebedarf besteht.

Grund für den fehlenden Überblick ist, dass es keine verlässliche, empirische Dauerbeobachtung gibt (vgl. Fendrich und Pothmann 2010, S. 1002). Verschiedene statistische Erhebungen unterscheiden sich teilweise stark in ihrem Zweck, ihrer Qualität und dem Umfang (ebd).

Hinzu kommt, dass die Befragung von Minderjährigen schwierig ist. Je jünger Kinder sind, desto mehr stehen sie unter dem Einfluss und der Kontrolle der Eltern bzw. Aufsichtspersonen, die in vielen Fällen selbst Täter oder Täterin sind. Es ist also davon auszugehen, dass bereits hier ein Großteil der in der Dunkelziffer angedeuteten Fälle zu verorten ist.

Repräsentative Umfragen unter älteren Personen sind rar, aber es gibt sie. Doch die Ergebnisse liegen teils weit auseinander, wie ein Vergleich der Studien von Häuser et al (2011), Iffland et al (2013) und Witt et al (2017) zeigt:

Physische Misshandlung: 12%, 12%, 12,5%

Psychische Misshandlung: 15%, 10,2%, 18,7%

Sexuelle Misshandlung: 12,6%, 6,2%, 13,9%

Physische Vernachlässigung: 48,4%, 48,4%, 41,8%

Psychische Vernachlässigung: 49,5%, 13,9%, 40,5%.

Ein weiterer Teil dieser nicht erfassten Vorfälle ist auf die rechtliche Situation in Deutschland zurückzuführen: Es gibt keine Meldepflicht für den Verdacht auf KWG (Wißmann 2022, S. 10), weder für Berufsgruppen, die besonders häufig in Kontakt mit Kindern stehen, noch für den Durchschnittsbürger oder gar Mediziner:innen.

Erst seit dem 01.01.2012 gibt es als Teil des Bundeskinderschutzgesetzes das Gesetz zur Kooperation und Information im Kinderschutz (KKG). Kurz gesagt (die juristischen Sachen überlasse ich doch lieber anderen) befähigt das Ärzte dazu, Verdachtsfälle weiterzuleiten, die vorher durch die ärztliche Schweigepflicht geschützt waren. Das gilt natürlich nur, wenn das geschützte Interesse (das Kindeswohl) das beeinträchtigte Interesse (die ärztliche Schweigepflicht) überwiegt (ebd).

Vielleicht interessant: In Staaten, in denen eine Meldepflicht existiert, wird nach deren Einführung ein erheblicher Anstieg der gemeldeten Vorfälle verzeichnet (vgl. Wißmann 2022, S. 11).

Bei Umfragen unter Ärzten zeigt sich, dass die Angst vor fälschlichen Beschuldigungen, Meldungen verhindert. Viele wünschen sich mehr Training für solche Fälle und/oder den Zweitbefund von Kolleg:innen (vgl. Wißmann 2022, S. 12ff.). Wie Wißmann im weiteren Verlauf seiner Arbeit zeigt, ist das keine neue Entwicklung. Bereits in den frühen 2000er Jahren gaben Ärzte verstärkt an, dass sie Verdachtsmomente aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht weiterleiten. 51% der befragten Kinderärzte gaben an, nicht alle Fälle oder nur unvollständig zu melden (ebd. S. 18). 64% meldeten, dass sie sich mehr Fortbildungsangebote wünschen (ebd. S. 19).

1.4) Erkennen und Prävention

Damit wären wir gleich bei einem der großen Probleme: In aller Regel werden Hilfsmittel zum Erkennen und damit auch zur Prävention von Kindesmissbrauch vor allem medizinischem Fachpersonal und Menschen in der Kinder- und Jugendarbeit zur Verfügung gestellt. Sind Nachbarn und Bekannte nicht zufällig in einer dieser Berufsgruppen angesiedelt, haben sie oft kein vertieftes Wissen. Das zeigt eine schnelle Suche mit Google Scholar sowohl im Deutschen (Stichwort: Kindesmisshandlung erkennen) als auch im Englischen (Stichwort: child abuse identification).

Natürlich gibt es mittlerweile auch im Internet frei verfügbares Material zu den Themen, wie zum Beispiel diese Info-Seite der Polizei. Aber: Auch die richtet sich vor allem an Lehrkräfte, Erzieher:innen, Jugendhilfeeinrichtungen und Mitarbeiter:innen in der Kinder- und Jugendarbeit (Polizeiliche Kriminalprävention online).

Dabei ist es selbstverständlich berechtigt, wenn gerade diese Personengruppen angesprochen werden. Mittlerweile ist ja bekannt, dass Vernachlässigung und Misshandlung von Kindern und Jugendlichen vor allem im familiären Umfeld stattfinden, die o.g. Personengruppen also außerhalb dessen die meiste Zeit mit den Opfern verbringen und Symptome erkennen können.

Das Standardwerk für die Prävention von KWG ist die Broschüre “Kindeswohlgefährdung — Erkennen und Helfen” des Kinderschutzzentrums-Berlin e.V., ein 208 Seiten langes Werk mit einer Fülle an Informationen, das — in überarbeiteten Versionen — seit den späten 1970ern als Grundlage für die Präventionsarbeit im deutschen Kinderschutz dient. Darin wird unter anderem vermerkt, dass “[...]um Schädigungen von Kindern und Jugendlichen im Zusammenhang mit Kindesmisshandlung oder Vernachlässigung zu erkennen und zu verstehen, [...] gute Kenntnisse in der körperlichen und seelischen Entwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen nötig [...]” sind.

Der Fall Adam S.

Nach dem etwas trockenen Theorieteil nun also endlich zu Adam, den Informationen, die wir an verschiedenen Stellen in den Filmen erhalten und wie wir daraus mutmaßen können, wie das Ganze in einem realweltlichen Fall geschehen sein könnte.

2.1) Fallanalyse

Ich denke, dass außer Frage steht, dass Adam misshandelt wurde. Bedienen wir uns der Unterteilung in die Subgruppen von Misshandlung, können wir mindestens bei physischer Misshandlung einen Haken setzen, vermutlich auch bei emotionaler Misshandlung und Vernachlässigung. Trotzdem gibt es nachfolgend noch einmal einen Abriss über die Informationen, die wir haben und die Schlussfolgerungen, die wir daraus ziehen können.

Anmerkung: Bilder möchte ich an dieser Stelle nicht verwenden. Ich werde die betreffenden Timecodes angeben, sodass die Szenen, falls nicht mehr im Gedächtnis, nachgeschaut werden können wenn etwas unklar ist.

2.1.a) Physische Misshandlung:

In “Das fleißige Lieschen” (folgend DfL) erhalten wir die Information, dass Roland Adam trainiert hat. Wir sehen in einer Rückblende, wie Adam auf der Terrasse des Bunkers Liegestütze macht und Roland ihm dabei immer wieder gegen den Brustkorb tritt (ab 00:12:29). Durch Leo erfahren wir später, dass das Ganze der Ausbildung zum Elitesoldaten dienen sollte und seine Aussage suggeriert, dass die beschriebene Szene ein regelmäßiges Vorkommnis war (ab 00:34:21).

Des Weiteren sehen wir, wie Roland in einem Wutausbruch, Adam mit dem Gürtel prügelt (ab 00:56:45). Mit Abschließen des Films wissen wir allerdings nicht mit Sicherheit, ob es sich dabei um einen Einzelfall handelt.

“Der Herr des Waldes” (folgend HdW) etabliert vor allem die Häufigkeit, mit der die Misshandlungen stattgefunden haben. Erste Hinweise sind, dass Adam seiner Mutter sagt, dass er sich früher auch gewünscht hat, dass sie ihn nicht mit Roland alleine lässt (ab 00:11:25) und setzt sich zu Beginn des Films durch Rolands Bitte um Verzeihung (ab 00:13:37) fort.

Interessant sind unter diesem Gesichtspunkt aber vor allem die Szenen im Badezimmer (00:35:00) und später in Adams Kinderzimmer (01:02:00): Adams Ausdruck, als er von dem Vorfall in der Garage und den früheren Ereignissen des Tages erzählt, suggeriert, dass das “Training” normal war, also häufig genug vorkam, dass Adam es als gegeben ansah und ohne erneute Aufforderung nach der Schule in der Garage auf dem Boden wartete.

Auch der dritte Teil “Das Herz der Schlange” (folgend HdS) bestärkt diesen Eindruck. In seiner Auseinandersetzung und der subsequenten Beichte gegenüber Pia und Esther sagt Leo, dass Roland Schürk Adam “wie ein Tier” (00:53:46) geschlagen habe und dass er selbst “jahrelang dabei zugesehen” (00:54:28) habe, wie sein bester Freund “immer und immer wieder” (ebd.) gequält wurde. Zuletzt hat Roland Schürk “wie besessen auf ihn eingedroschen” (00:55:47).

In “Die Kälte der Erde” (folgend KdE) erfahren wird — diesmal auch von Adam selbst in Teilen angesprochen — dass es sich bei den Schlägen vermutlich um keinen Einzelfall handelt, sondern um ein regelmäßiges Vorkommen. Durch Manuela Baron lernen wird, dass Adam bei der Polizei angerufen hat, um zu melden, dass sein Vater ihn schlägt. Sein “An die Prügel denk’ ich heute noch” lässt darauf schließen, dass das Rolands Reaktion auf die Kontaktaufnahme durch die Polizei oder andere zuständige Behörden war, er also mindestens zweimal physisch misshandelt wurde (01:13.42).

Interessant ist in dieser Szene auch, die nicht-textuale Andeutung, dass die Misshandlungen schon frühzeitig begonnen haben. In den Rückblenden in DfL sehen wir Adam als Teenager. Durch die Möglichkeit, den Vorfall in der Garage mehr oder weniger genau zu datieren, wird uns von den Filmen eine obere Altersgrenze gesetzt: Adam ist zwischen 15 und 17 Jahre alt, als er das letzte Mal von Roland Schürk geschlagen wurde.

Wir gehen mit dem Hintergrundwissen aus HdS in die Szene mit Manuela Baron, dass Leo die Misshandlung jahrelang beobachtet und erhalten mehrer Hinweise darauf, dass Adams physische Misshandlung bereits im Kindesalter stattgefunden haben. Zum einen kann er sich nicht an Manuela Baron und die Heimatschänke erinnern. Erinnerungsverlust kann eine Folge von Traumata sein, aber durch das Bild, das Manuela Baron Adam in der Heimatschein zeigt (01:13:25), wird suggeriert, dass er noch sehr jung war, als er regelmäßig dort war. Auch ihre Aussage “Kinder denken sich gerne Geschichten aus. Weißt du noch [...]” verstärkt den Eindruck, dass Adam im Kindesalter war, als er versucht hat, die physische Misshandlung seines Vaters gegenüber der Polizei zu melden (ebd.).

Wir haben nicht genügend Informationen, um eine ähnlich genaue Grenze nach unten zu ziehen, wie wir es nach oben können. Aber der Eindruck, der erweckt wird — ob beabsichtigt oder nicht — deutet auf einen langen Zeitraum und wiederholte physische Misshandlungen hin.

2.1.b) Psychischer und/oder emotionaler Missbrauch

Natürlich ist es nahezu unmöglich, langanhaltende physische Misshandlungen von psychischen Missbrauch zu trennen. Selbst einmalige Vorkommnisse können langanhaltende Schäden verursachen. Aber es gibt auch konkrete Hinweise auf psychischen und emotionalen Missbrauch in den Filmen.

In DfL fällt da zunächst die Szene mit dem Hund auf, der Adam bellend gegen die Wand drängt (ab 00:23:03). Die Rückblende wird durch Conrad Hofers Erzählungen über die psychische Misshandlung seines Bruders durch den gemeinsamen Großvater gespiegelt. Auch wenn wir nicht eindeutig wissen, warum Roland Adam mit dem Hund gequält hat, werden wir zu den Vermutung hingerissen, dass es ähnliche Gründe hatte, wie bei Erik Hofer.

Konkreter werden die Beweise in HdW. Adam sagt, dass alles ganz normal gewesen wäre, dass er wie “jeden Morgen in diesem Schrank” aufgewacht sei, was eindeutig der psychischen Misshandlung zuzuordnen ist (ab 01:04:00). Ein weiteres benanntes Anzeichen für die psychische Misshandlung durch Roland Schürk ist, dass Adam nach der Schule direkt in die Garage gegangen und sich dort auf den Boden gesetzt hat, um zu warten, dass er die Zeit finden würde, ihn zu trainieren (ebd.). Nicht nur wird dadurch suggeriert, dass Adam sich aus Angst, den Misshandlungen aller Art fügt, es zeugt auch von einer deutlichen Isolation.

Das Gespräch mit Peter Lausch liefert einen möglichen Beweggrund für sämtliche Formen von Roland Schürks Missbrauch. Roland sagt: “Es gibt nichts Demütigenderes, als einen schwachen Sohn” (01:23:25).

HdS lässt den Zuschauer an der emotionalen Misshandlung teilhaben. Auch wenn das Gift des Frosches physisch wirkt, ist die unmittelbare Konsequenz von Roland Schürks Handeln jedoch psychischer und emotionaler Natur.

Im weiteren Verlauf des Films erfahren wir von Leo, dass Roland Schürk immer wütend gewesen sein soll (ab 00:55:00). Dem Zuschauer wird — vor allem mit dem Vorwissen aus den ersten beiden Filmen — suggeriert, dass diese Wut sich auf Adam konzentriert hat.

Was die psychische und emotionale Misshandlung angeht, erfahren wir in KdE nichts. Trotzdem liegen ausreichend Informationen vor, um davon auszugehen, dass Adam regelmäßig psychisch Misshandelt wurde.

2.1.c) Vernachlässigung

Vernachlässigung im Sinne der KWG ist schwer einzuschätzen und kommt als Form des Missbrauchs meist nur dann zum Tragen, wenn es sich um besonders schwere Fälle handelt, die in Teilen bereits durch die Definitionen der physischen oder psychischen Misshandlung abgedeckt sind. In der Realität ist die Berufung auf KWG sehr viel weiter gefächert und wird von verschiedenen Personengruppen — teilweise auch von Eltern — aus verschiedenen Gründen gemeldet. Reine Vernachlässigung, die sich in “klassischen Symptomen” wie mangelnder körperlicher Pflege u.ä. äußert, finden wir in den Filmen nicht.

Wir erfahren aber in HdW, dass Adam morgens dazu gezwungen wurde, seinen eigenen Urin zu trinken und dass er nach der Schule in den Wald gegangen ist, um nicht daran zu denken, wie hungrig er ist (ab 01:04:00).

Das rückt das Gespräch mit Lida Tellman (ab 00:48:25) aus dem ersten Film in ein neues Licht. Wir können bis dahin nur vermuten, dass Adam “den Hunger” zuhause kennengelernt hat. Natürlich sind seine Aussagen aus Der Herr des Waldes keine Bestätigung der Vermutung, legen diese aber nahe.

Weder in HdS noch in KdE werden konkrete Hinweise auf Vernachlässigung angesprochen. Einzig Adams Essverhalten könnte als solcher angebracht werden, ist aber nicht ausreichend fundiert. Trotzdem kann man davon ausgehen, dass eine Vernachlässigung im Sinne der KWG stattgefunden hat.

2.1.d) Sexueller Missbrauch

In keinem der Filme wird sexueller Missbrauch angesprochen. Es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass Adam auch diese Form erleiden musste, auszuschließen ist es jedoch nicht.

Vermutlich obliegt die Interpretation dem Zuschauer, der sich die Szene ansieht, in der Adam in den Rückblenden von DfL mit dem Gürtel geschlagen wird. Es ist durchaus möglich, den Fokus der Kamera auf Rolands Gürtelschnalle als Hinweis auf sexualisierte Gewalt zu verstehen.

2.1.e) Münchhausen-Stellvertreter Syndrom

Hierfür gibt es keinerlei Anzeichen. Eine Misshandlung per Definition dieser Subkategorie hat nach den uns vorliegenden Anzeichen nicht stattgefunden.

Nach dieser genauen Betrachtung kommen wir jetzt (endlich) zu dem Teil, über den ich eigentlich schreiben wollte: Wer wusste was, wer hätte helfen können und hat es aus welchem Grund nicht getan, und welche Motivation liegt dem (Nicht-)Handeln zugrunde?

2.2) Roland Schürk, Täter

Roland ist der klare Primär-Täter. Es wird in den Filmen wie o.g. immer wieder angesprochen und gezeigt. Er gesteht die Misshandlung und äußert etwas, das auf den ersten Blick wie eine Entschuldigung wirkt: “Ich erinnere mich an das, was ich dir angetan habe. Wenn du kannst, verzeihst du mir. Irgendwann” (00:13:35 - 00:13:53).

Es steht außer Frage, dass er von den Misshandlungen wusste. Allerdings erfahren wir kaum etwas darüber, warum Roland Adam misshandelt.

In DfL erwähnt Leo, dass Roland Schürk seinen Sohn zu “so einer Art Elitesoldat” formen wollte (00:34:47). Wie verlässlich diese Aussage ist, können wir nicht einschätzen, da Leo selbst noch ein Kind ist und auf Informationen von Adam angewiesen, um diesen Eindruck zu formen.

Mehr Aufschluss über die Motivation erhalten wir in HdW. Bei ihrer scheinbar ersten Begegnung nach Rolands Koma sagt dieser: “Du bist ein Mann geworden”, woraufhin Adam mit “Ja. Auch ohne deine Hilfe”, antwortet (00:13:25). Durch den Austausch — und die darauffolgende Nicht-Entschuldigung — wird dem Zuschauer suggeriert, dass Rolands Handeln einen erzieherischen Hintergrund hatte und möglicherweise in einem veralteten Bild von Männlichkeit verankert ist.

Der Eindruck wird zum einen verstärkt durch Rolands “Sieh dich an. Du bist alles, was ich mir immer für dich gewünscht habe. Ich bin einfach nur stolz auf dich” (00:26:33), zum anderen durch die Aussage “Es gibt nicht Demütigenderes, als einen schwachen Sohn” (01:23:25) im Gespräch mit Peter Lausch am Ende des Films.

Unter diesem Gesichtspunkt ist vor allem Adams Formulierung in den beiden Szenen in denen er vom Vorfall in der Garage erzählt, interessant. Er spricht davon, dass Roland die “Zeit finden muss”, um ihn zu trainieren (01:04:13) und dass er bestraft werden musste.

Roland selbst wiederholt mehrfach, dass er Adam lehren wird (01:09:10). Was genau das sein soll, erfahren wir nicht, aber es wird klar, dass seine Erziehungsmethoden hauptsächlich auf physischer Bestrafung, methodischer Vernachlässigung und der emotionalen Manipulation basieren.

Letztendlich wird uns im Kontext von HdW und Lauschs Etablierung als Psychopath auch Roland als solcher präsentiert und damit eine mögliche Erklärung geboten. Adam selbst bezeichnet ihn als einen von “den Fünfundzwanzig” (ab 01:13:50) und Roland festigt diesen Eindruck als er auf Lausch Frage “Kennst du was Schöneres, als was Schönes zu zerstören?” (01:22:10) zustimmend nickt.

Der Vollständigkeit halber soll an dieser Stelle noch aufgeführt werden, dass uns Roland als grundsätzlich gewaltbereit vorgestellt wird. Dazu äußern sich natürlich einerseits die oben bereits erwähnten Rückblenden, in denen er Adam misshandelt, aber auch die Verurteilung wegen illegalen Waffenbesitz, die Pia in HdS anspricht (ab 00:32:20). In diesem Zuge erfährt der Zuschauer auch, dass während eines von mehreren bewaffneten Überfällen ein Wachmann erschossen wurde (00:46:24). Im weiteren Verlauf des Films wird nicht eindeutig geklärt, ob Boris Barns, der für den Mord verurteilt wurde, diesen auch wirklich begangen hat. Eine Interpretation, dass er den Mord gestanden hat, um Roland zu decken, ist möglich (01:06:45).

Roland scheut nicht davor zurück, zu töten. Auch wenn er hofft, dass Adam an dem Froschgift nicht stirbt, bringt ihn die Möglichkeit nicht von seinem Vorhaben ab. Der Grund, warum er will, dass Adam lebt ist letztlich, um ihm größeren Schaden zuzufügen (ab 00:50:37).

Verschiedene Fan-Theorien unterstützen die Neigung Rolands zur Gewalt, unter anderem, dass er nationalsozialistischen oder reichsbürgerlichen Ideologien anhängt. Dabei handelt es sich aber um Interpretationen, die zwar durch Bilder in den Filmen unterstützt werden können, für die es aber keine eindeutigen, im Text verankerten Hinweise gibt.

Ökonomische Existenzängste als Grundlage akzidentellen Kindesmissbrauchs können fast ausgeschlossen werden. Zwar sagt Pia, dass Roland Schürk “vierzig jahrelang ein arbeitsloser Taugenichts” war (00:32:50), spätestens nach den ersten Raubüberfällen ist diese Grundlage aber verschwunden. Diese haben 2003 stattgefunden (ebd.), als Adam etwa 12 Jahre alt war.

Es ist unklar, ob die Familie Schürk bereits vor den Raubüberfällen im Bunker gewohnt hat, oder erst danach eingezogen ist. Ist ersteres der Fall, ist das zeitweise Vorhandensein von ökonomischen Existenzängsten zumindest in dem Ausmaß unwahrscheinlich, dass es zu wiederholter Kindesmisshandlung führen würde. Im Fall, dass das Haus nach den Raubüberfällen gekauft und bezogen wurde, unterstützt es das Argument vom Wegfall der Ängste als Auslöser. In beiden Fällen ist jedoch anzumerken, dass das Haus zentraler Ort der Misshandlungen ist.

Eine Motivation der Kindesmisshandlung aus der persönlichen Biographie Roland Schürks wird dem Zuschauer nicht gegeben.

2.3) Soziales Umfeld, Mitwissende und mögliche Helfer:innen

Viel interessanter ist allerdings Adams Umfeld. Auch hier haben wir keine konkreten Angaben, wer in welchem Ausmaß über die Misshandlungen informiert war und können nur Mutmaßungen anstellen. Es hilft aber unter Umständen, des eigentlichen Ask zu beantworten.

2.3.a) Heide Schürk, Mutter

Wir wissen, das wir nichts wissen. Also, nichts Konkretes. Weder über Heide selbst noch über ihr Wissen hinsichtlich der Misshandlungen werden je definitive Aussagen gemacht und alles obliegt der Einschätzung des Zuschauers.

In DfL taucht Heide Schürk dreimal auf: als Adam unangekündigt bei ihr vor der Tür steht (ab 00:35:45), als sie zusammen zu Abend essen (ab 00:38:10), und als Adam sie nach Abschluss des Falls besucht (01:26:45).

Ihr erster Auftritt zeigt lediglich, wie überrascht sie von Adams plötzlichen Auftauchen ist und gibt keine Aufschlüsse über ihr Wissen hinsichtlich des Misshandlung. Auch während des Abendessens erhalten wir von ihr keine konkreten Informationen. Die Art und Weise, wie sie über Rolands Zustand spricht, ist neutral und deutet in erster Linie nicht darauf hin, dass sie Mitwisserin war. Sie zeigt sich sogar überrascht, als Adam nach Erwähnung seines Vaters und Leos vermeintlicher Fürsorge aufsteht und geht (00:38:58).

Den größten Hinweis auf ihre Erfahrungen mit Roland in der Vergangenheit bietet der dritte Auftritt mit ihrem “Vater ist aufgewacht” (01:26:52). Auch wenn es nicht angesprochen wird, legt das Schauspiel nahe, dass mindestens Sorge um Adam hat, möglicherweise aber auch ihre eigenen Misshandlungserfahrungen wieder in Erinnerung gerufen werden.

Exkurs: Häusliche Gewalt gegen Frauen

Dass der Zuschauer (fast) nichts über Heide Schürk erfährt bedingt auch, dass es unklar bleibt, ob sie selbst misshandelt wurde und/oder häusliche Gewalt erfahren hat.

Die Frage, inwieweit Heide Schürk selbst unter ihrem Mann gelitten hat, bietet genug Stoff für ein eigenes Essay. Um nicht vom eigentlichen Thema abzuweichen sei an dieser Stelle — mit dem Hinweis auf die Info-Seite der Organisation Terre des Femmes — gesagt, dass sich in Heides Verhalten einige markante Züge finden, die auch mit Opfern und Überlebenden häuslicher Gewalt assoziiert werden. Darunter fallen unter anderem ihr Trinkverhalten, ihre scheinbare Passivität und die Andeutung von Wahrnehmungsstörungen, als sie nicht versteht, warum Adam als Kind nicht mit seinem Vater allein gelassen werden wollte. In vielen Szenen mit Roland Schürk hält sie sich im Hintergrund. Die Farbwahl ihrer Kleidung lässt sie förmlich mit den grauen Wänden des Bunkers verschmelzen und macht sie beinahe unsichtbar.

In der eben angesprochenen Szene bittet sie Adam, zurück in den Bunker zu ziehen und sie nicht mit Roland alleine zu lassen (ab 00:11:10). Der Grund, warum sie Adam als Unterstützung sucht, wird nicht genauer benannt. Es ist durchaus möglich, dass sie sich vor ihrem Mann fürchtet und damit Adams Schutz erbittet.

Hinsichtlich ihres Wissens bezüglich der Misshandlung wirft der Halbsatz “Ich konnte doch auch nicht-” den sie nie zuende führt, noch weitere Fragen auf (ab 00:11:40). Sowohl die Aussage, dass sie nichts unternehmen konnte, weil sie selbst unter Roland gelitten hat, als auch das Eingeständnis, dass sie nichts von den Misshandlungen mitbekommen hat, sind denkbar, jedoch ungleich wahrscheinlich.

Die Vermutung, dass Heide Schürk von den Misshandlungen wusste, aber das Gefühl hatte, diese nicht verhindern zu können, wird durch ihr “Entschuldigung, für alles”, mit der sie Adam aus dem Haus entlässt (01:07:15), erhärtet. Aber auch hier fehlt die konkrete Benennung dessen, wofür sie sich entschuldigt.

HdS wird augenscheinlich deutlicher in seiner Zuweisung von Mitwissen. Im Gespräch mit Leo merkt Heide an, dass es gut ist, dass Roland tot ist, weil er den Jungen sonst “nie in Ruhe gelassen” hätte (00:40:05). Wieder ist es aber keine definitive Aussage, denn: Sie kann sich hiermit auch auf die Gegenwart beziehen und Rolands Versuche mit Adam Kontakt aufzunehmen, nachdem er aus dem Koma erwacht ist.

In KdE erfahren wir wieder ähnlich wenig über Heide, wie auch schon im ersten Film. Einzig ihr verändertes Aussehen (00:09:39) könnten Aufschluss darüber geben, dass auch ihr der Tod Rolands gutgetan hat. Es ist aber genausogut möglich, dass das veränderte Aussehen auf die Änderungen im Produktionsteam zurückzuführen sind.

Letzten Endes liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass Heide Schürk etwas gewusst haben muss. Schon allein die physische Nähe der vorrangig im und am Haus stattfindenden Misshandlungen macht es unwahrscheinlich, dass sie überhaupt nichts gewusst hat. Sowohl die Aussage Leo gegenüber, dass es gut sei, dass Roland tot ist und ihre Entschuldigung an Adam können diese These unterstützen.

Geht man davon aus, dass sie von den Misshandlungen wusste, liegt es nahe anzunehmen, dass sie auch hätte helfen können. Wie aber bereits oben beschrieben ist es möglich, dass auch ihr Gewalt von Roland widerfahren ist und sie sich selbst — und möglicherweise ihren Sohn — in weitere Gefahr gebracht hätte, hätte sie versucht, Hilfe von außen zu erhalten.

2.3.b) Boris Barns, “Onkel”

Auch wenn wir erst in HdS von Boris Existenz erfahren, wissen wir doch letztlich mehr über seine Beziehung zum jungen Adam, als bei Heide Schürk. Das erste Mal wird er von Adam selbst erwähnt, als er sich in der auf die Mordnacht folgenden Nacht in einer verlassenen Hütte versteckt. Er blätterst durch Unterlagen und findet ein Bild, das Roland Schürk und einen weiteren Mann mit einer Waffe posierend zeigt. Adam identifiziert diesen als “Onkel Boris!” (00:30:35). Auf der ersten Blick bzw. das erste Hören hin, scheint Adam ihm nicht abgeneigt zu sein. Dieser Eindruck wird an späteren Stellen bestätigt, zum Beispiel als Heide Leo erzählt: “[...] aber Adam und Boris, die haben sich geliebt” (00:39:35) und als Adam und Boris sich im Gefängnis das erste mal wiederbegegnen (01:06:10).

Weniger klar ist, wie viel Boris Barns von den Misshandlungen Roland Schürks wusste bzw. ob ihm das Ausmaß derer bewusst war.

Ein wichtiger Anhaltspunkt im Text ist hier, dass Barns 2003 in Haft kommt (vgl. HdS 00:46:24), als Adam zwischen 12 und 14 Jahre alt war. Obwohl aufgrund der oben genannten Szene in der Heimatschänke aus KdE (vgl. 2.2) davon auszugehen ist, dass die Misshandlungen im Kindesalter begonnen haben, können wir darüber nur mutmaßen. Es besteht die Möglichkeit, dass Boris Barns nichts davon wusste, liegt der Beginn der Misshandlungen nach seiner Inhaftierung.

Was aber spricht dafür, dass er von den systemischen Misshandlung seines Patenkindes wusste?

Zunächst einmal ist da die Bezeichnung Rolands und Boris als “Der König und sein General” auf der Rückseite des Fotos (00:39:21), das Adam aus dem Safe holt, später an Leo weitergibt, und Pia als Grundlage ihrer Recherche dient. Die Bezeichnung lässt ebenso wie Heides Kommentar, dass Adam und Boris sich geliebt haben (00:39:35) darauf schließen, dass Boris ein enges Verhältnis zur Familie Schürk hatte. Das wird durch Adams Aussage in KdE unterstützt, dass Boris “irgendwie schon” sein richtiger Onkel und ein Teil der Familie sei (ab 00:40:40). Es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass er nicht mindestens wusste, dass Rolands Erziehung sehr streng ist.

Geht man davon aus, dass Boris Barns unmittelbar nach dem Raubmord ins Gefängnis gekommen ist, liegen zwischen der Einführung des Gesetzes zum Recht auf eine gewaltfreie Erziehung (vgl. 1.2) und seiner Inhaftierung etwa sechzehn Monate. Dass er weitgehend verbreitete Körperstrafen in Adams Erziehung akzeptiert, wie zum Beispiel Ohrfeigen und moderate Schläge auf Weichteile, ist nicht unwahrscheinlich.

In diesem Fall besteht für Boris Barns kein Grund zum Handeln. “Moderate Körperstrafen” als Teil der Erziehung seines Patenkindes können für ihn durchaus akzeptabel sein und ein Heranziehen externer Hilfe ist nicht vonnöten. Viel wahrscheinlicher ist, dass er Rolands strenge Erziehung durch einen möglicherweise liebevolleren Umgang mit Adam auszugleichen versucht, ohne die Erziehungsmethoden seines Freundes zu untergraben. Diese Interpretation lassen zumindest die anfänglich liebevollen Verhaltensweisen Boris’ Adam gegenüber in HdS (01:06:05) und KdE (00:37:28).

Dass Boris Barns sich an die Polizei wendet, um Hilfe für Adam zu erbitten ist unwahrscheinlich, da er zu der Zeit vermutlich in mehrere illegale Aktivitäten involviert ist.

Auch wenn wir nicht wissen, ob die Misshandlungen zum Zeitpunkt seiner Inhaftierung bereits das Ausmaß angenommen hatten, die dem Zuschauer an späterer Stelle gezeigt werden, gibt es doch einige Indizien, die dafürsprechen.

An mehreren Stellen wird deutlich gemacht, dass Boris ein enger Freund der Familie und Vertrauter von Roland war. Er ist der General zu Rolands König (vgl. HdS 00:39:21 und 01:06:10) und Adams Königssohn (vgl. KdE 01:13:17), Adam und er haben sich geliebt (vgl. HdS 00:39:40), und er behauptet von sich selbst, dass er nie zulassen würde, dass jemand Adam etwas antut (vgl. HdS ab 00:37:43). Trotz gebrochener Finger in Untersuchungshaft bezeichnet Adam ihn immer noch als Teil der Familie und besteht darauf, dass Boris immer für ihn da war (vgl. KdE ab 00:40:50). Falls die Misshandlungen bereits so fortgeschritten waren, wie wir in den ersten beiden Filmen lernen, dann ist es unwahrscheinlich, dass er nichts davon wusste.

Geht man noch weiter, besteht auch die Möglichkeit, Boris Barns als Mittäter in Adams Misshandlung zu verstehen. Dabei ist nicht unbedingt gemeint, dass er Adam selbst physisch oder psychisch misshandelt oder ihn vernachlässigt hat, sondern eher, dass er Rolands Art der Erziehung in vollem Wissen unterstützt hat. Auch hierzu lässt sich wieder die Bezeichnung als General anführen, sowie die Tatsache, dass Boris auch bei anderen Straftaten als Rolands Komplize fungiert hat (vgl. HdS 00:45:43 - 00:46:24).

Unter diesem Gesichtspunkt ist es auch interessant sich zu fragen, ob Boris den Mord begangen hat, für den er inhaftiert wurde. In HdS sagt Pia zwar, dass Boris wegen Raubmord in der Lerchesflur sitzt und dass Boris den Mord auf sich genommen hat (00:45:43), das wird aber im Gespräch mit Adam durch Boris nicht bestätigt. Seine Aussagen lässen die Möglichkeit offen, dass er den Mord fälschlicherweise gestanden hat, um Roland zu decken:

“Das letzte Mal, als ich dich gesehen habe, hattest du noch kurze Hosen angehabt” - “Was machst du hier, Onkel Boris?” - “Befehl vom König” - “Das war immer mein Spruch” (01:06:10). “Warum bist du hier?” - “Wegen Raub und wegen dir. Ja, ich hab das immer ernst genommen mit der Patenschaft. Bin ja sonst von niemandem Onkel. Als es dann darum ging, wer in den Knast geht, ich oder dein Vater- Mich brauchte ja sonst niemand. Aber ihn schon” (01:06:29 - 01:06:25).

Auch für Adam scheint dies ein mögliches Szenario zu sein, da er kurz darauf zum Ausdruck bringt, dass er sich wünscht, Boris sei nicht für Roland ins Gefängnis gegangen (01:07:52 - 01:08:05). Sollte dies der Fall sein ist damit belegt, dass Boris durchaus bereit ist, Rolands illegales Handeln ohne erkennbare Einschränkung zu decken und zu unterstützen.

Weiterhin interessant ist im Kontext der Misshandlungen als Erziehungsmethode zu der Boris Roland befähigt hat Boris Frage “Biste deswegen hier? Haste was damit zu tun?” (01:08:36), die er Adam auf die Nachricht von Rolands Tod hin stellt. Er scheint es nicht für unmöglich zu halten (ungleich Heide Schürks, HdS 00:18:47), dass Adam seinen Vater ermordet hat. Erinnert man sich an Leos Aussage aus DfL, dass Roland Adam zu einem Elitesoldaten erziehen wollte, könnte es ein Hinweis darauf sein, dass Boris von diesem Plan wusste und davon ausgeht, dass Roland damit erfolgreich war.

Boris selbst ist körperlicher Gewalt nicht abgeneigt, wie wir an mehreren Stellen erfahren. Er posiert zusammen mit Roland und einer Waffe für ein Bild (00:30:33), er ist Komplize bei Banküberfällen, bei denen von tödlichen Waffen Gebrauch gemacht wird (ab 01:06:29), er lässt sich selbst verprügeln und bricht Adam die Finger, um Informationen zu erhalten (01:13:00). Im Gegensatz zu Roland wirkt seine Anwendung von Gewalt auf den Zuschauer aber eher wie ein Mittel zum Zweck als aus der Wut heraus geboren. Vergleicht man zum Beispiel die Strafe mit dem Gürtel (DfL 00:56:44) mit dem Finger-Brechen in der Kapelle (HdS ab 01:13:00), wird dieser Unterschied deutlich.

Auch wenn es keinen eindeutigen Beweis dafür gibt, dass Boris vom Ausmaß der Misshandlungen und Adams Training wusste, liegt die Vermutung nahe. Es ist nicht auszuschließen, dass er Roland darin unterstützt hat und der Meinung war, dass dies zu Adams Bestem sei (vgl. HdS 01:06:25). In diesem Fall besteht für Boris keine Motivation Adam zu helfen.

2.3.c) Manuela Baron, Bekannte der Familie

Auch über Manuela Baron wissen wir nicht genug, um definitive Aussagen zu treffen. Allgemeine Aspekte, wie zum Beispiel die Tatsache, dass Körperstrafen in der Erziehung von Kindern noch gestattet waren, als sie Umgang mit Adam hatte, gelten bei ihr genauso wie bei Boris Barns.

Nach ihrer Vorstellung in die Kälte der Erde als Besitzerin von Esthers Fußballkneipe, der Heimatschänke, wird später durch Pia eine Verbindung zur Familie Schürk durch Boris Barns aufgebaut, an die Adam selbst sich nicht erinnern kann (ab 01:06:00). Als er und Leo die Heimatschänke aufsuchen, um mit Manuela Baron über den Fall zu sprechen, erkennt sie Adam jedoch sofort als “Schürk junior” (01:08:14), was ein vormals enges Verhältnis — entweder zwischen ihr und Roland/Boris oder ihr und Adam selbst — suggeriert.

An dieser Stelle stellt sich die Frage: Warum erinnert sich Adam nicht an die Heimatschänke?

Die naheliegendste Erklärung ist, dass er bei seinem letzten Besuch zu jung war. Das Foto, das Manuela Baron ihm später zeigt (01:13:25), lässt vermuten, dass Adam jünger als zehn Jahre zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme war. Obwohl in diesem Alter dauerhafte Erinnerungen geschaffen werden, ist es nicht unüblich, dass er diese später wieder verloren hat.

Sollte Adam die Heimatschänke bis zu einem späteren Alter regelmäßig aufgesucht haben, ist es ebenfalls möglich, dass er sich aufgrund des Traumas nicht mehr daran erinnern kann. Viele Opfer von Misshandlungen und darauf resultierenden psychischen Krankheiten weisen Gedächtnisverlust oder Wahrnehmungsstörungen auf.

Wie auch Roland Schürk und Boris Barns wird auch sie als jemand dargestellt, der Gewalt nicht unbedingt abgeneigt ist. Ähnlich wie wie Barns scheint sie diese aber gezielt als Strafe einzusetzen und bleibt dabei ruhig (ab 01:07:05).

Ebenfalls ähnlich ist hier die Frage, inwieweit sie sich des Ausmaßes der Misshandlungen bewusst war und nicht, ob sie überhaupt davon wusste. Wie auch bei Boris ist es möglich, dass sie Rolands Erziehungsmethoden als streng, aber nicht unüblich eingestuft hat und es darum keinen Grund für sie gab Adam zu helfen. Hierfür spricht vor allem die Unterhaltung bei Adams zweitem Besuch in der Heimatschänke:

“Kinder denken sich gerne Geschichten aus. Weißt du noch, als du bei der Polizei angerufen hast und behauptet hast, dein Vater würde dich schlagen? Das war ein Theater. Und wegen was? Wegen nichts!” — “Ja, wegen nichts. An die Prügel denk’ ich heute noch” (ab 01:13:41).

Ihre Überraschung hinsichtlich Adams Reaktion scheint echt zu sein.

Manuela Barons Verbindung zur Familie Schürk wird vor allem durch Boris Barns etabliert. Da dieser 2003 inhaftiert wird (00:46:11), gibt es keinen Hinweis darauf, dass sie danach noch Kontakt zu Adam hat. Das Bild, das uns gezeigt wird, bildet einen noch jüngeren Adam ab. Es ist also durchaus im Bereich des Möglichen, dass sie nicht um das Ausmaß der Misshandlungen wusste und diese für einen Teil Rolands strenger Erziehung und weit verbreiteter erzieherischer Maßnahmen hielt. Handlungsbedarf entsteht daraus für sie nicht.

Hinweise darauf, dass Manula Baron enger mit der Familie Schürk verbunden war, gibt es in KdE nicht. Auch wenn es im Bereich des Möglichen ist, dass sie in die kriminellen Aktivitäten von Roland Schürk und Boris Barns involviert war, sind das nur Spekulationen. Im Gegensatz zu Boris, dem “General” wird ihr keine Rolle zugewiesen, auch wenn ihre Bezeichnung Adams als “Königssohn” (01:13:17) darauf hindeutet, dass sie sich dieser Rollen bewusst war. Interessant ist an dieser Stelle, dass das Bild, welches sie Adam zeigt, Heide Schürk nicht beinhaltet, Manuela Baron aber trotzdem von der “ganzen Familie” (01:13:29) spricht.

Sollte sie in diesem Rahmen vom Ausmaß der Misshandlungen gewusst haben, ist es einerseits möglich, dass sie diese für die Erziehung und Ausbildung Adams zum Elitesoldaten als notwendig erachtet hat und andererseits, dass sie sich durch die Unterordnung unter Roland Schürk und Boris Barns als König und seinen General nicht in der Lage sah, Adam Hilfe zukommen zu lassen.

2.3.d) Leo Hölzer, Schulfreund

Dass Leo von den Misshandlungen wusste, ist hinlänglich bekannt. Bereits kurz nach Adams Rückkehr äußert er Caro gegenüber, dass Roland Adam zu einem Elitesoldaten ausbilden wollte (00:34:47). Ob es sich bei dieser Erklärung um eine Beschönigung der Tatsachen handelt, erfahren wir nicht.

Im weiteren Verlauf des Films wird der Zuschauer darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass Leo die Misshandlungen beobachtet. Die Rückblende zeigt ihn, wie er mit dem Fernglas in seinem Baumhaus Sitzt, und das Training beobachtet (00:34:34). Adam scheint erst später davon zu erfahren und sich dafür zu schämen (ab 00:32:35).

Weitere Informationen erhält der Zuschauer in rapider Abfolge in HdS. Esther gegenüber gibt er zu, dass Roland Adam “wie ein Tier” geschlagen habe (00:53:46). Auf den Vorwurf hin, dass Adam Roland aus Rache dafür getötet und das bereits mit dem Brand in der Garage versucht habe, gesteht Leo: “Das mit der Garage, das war nicht Adam” (00:54:20). Daraufhin folgt die vermutlich umfangreichste Schilderung der Misshandlungen, die Adam widerfahren sind und dass diese jahrelang angedauert haben, eine Einschätzung von Rolands Temperament und wie Leo die Situation erlebt hat. Er sagt: “Und diesmal wusste ich einfach, der schlägt ihn tot” (00:55:15) in Rechtfertigung seines eigenen, späteren Handelns.

Im Gegensatz zu den anderen betrachteten Charakteren Heide Schürk, Boris Barns und Manuela Baron, weiß Leo also definitiv von den Misshandlungen. Ob ihm das volle Ausmaß bewusst war, wird nicht klar, es ist aufgrund seiner Angst um Adam aber naheliegend.

Im Gegensatz zu den anderen Charakteren wissen wir bei Leo auch, dass er helfen wollte. In DfL sagt er von sich selbst, dass er nichts tun konnte, um Adam zu helfen (00:35:05). Diese Aussage wird in HdS konkretisiert, als er Esther gegenüber zugibt, dass er zu viel Angst hatte und froh war, dass nicht er es war (00:54:39).

Der Zuschauer erfährt gleich zu Anfang von DfL, dass Leo in der Schule selbst Opfer von Gewalt war und das Adam ihm geholfen hat (ab 00:08:49). Ob die beiden zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon befreundet waren, ist nicht klar, aber wahrscheinlich, da Leo in HdS erwähnt, jahrelang Zeuge der Misshandlungen geworden zu sein (00:54:30). Ansonsten erfährt der Zuschauer nicht genug über Leos Hintergrund, um Schlussfolgerungen darüber zu ziehen, warum er nicht — früher oder anders — helfen konnte. Es ist nicht klar, ob er kein oder nur ein schlechtes Verhältnis zu Eltern, Lehrern oder anderen erwachsenen Bezugspersonen hatte, die er hätte ansprechen können. Der Zuschauer erfährt auch nicht, ob er sich überhaupt mit Adam über die Misshandlungen unterhalten und ihm dazu geraten hat, Hilfe zu suchen.

Letzten Endes hilft Leo, indem er Roland niederschlägt, als er um Adams Leben fürchtet (00:55:15). Mehrfach wird in den Filmen etabliert, dass Leo sich vor den möglichen Konsequenzen seiner Tat fürchtet und mit den Folgen des Traumas kämpft (vgl. DfL 00:57:57, HdW 00:16:00, und HdS 00:55:). Ob er den Hilfeakt an sich bereut, wird aber nicht klar.

2.3.e) Sonstige

Über das sonstige Umfeld des jungen Adam ist quasi nichts bekannt. Die wenigen kontextuellen Informationen, die die Filme bieten, lassen aber Vermutungen zu, die hier nicht außen vor gelassen werden sollen.

2.3.e.i) Lehrer

Generell steht bei Kindesmissbrauch oft die Frage im Raum, warum Personen, die die betroffenen Kinder regelmäßig sehen, nichts unternommen haben. Auch wenn wir in Adams Fall kaum Informationen zu seinen Lehrer:innen haben, gibt es jedoch Hinweise, die vermuten lassen, warum er auch von dieser Seite keine Hilfe erfahren hat.

In HdW erfahren wir sowohl durch den Trainingsplan und die Pokale in Adams Zimmer (ab 00:34:00), als auch durch die Schülerzeitung (ab 00:50:21), dass Adam auch für richtige Sportarten regelmäßig und viel trainiert zu haben scheint. Auftretende Verletzungen können demnach auch Sport- und Trainingsunfällen zugeschrieben werden und müssen das Lehrpersonal nicht auf Misshandlungen schließen lassen, sollten besagte Verletzungen sichtbar gewesen sein.

Des Weiteren kommt hinzu, dass Lehrer — wie auch Ärzte — oft befürchten, dass eine Meldung von Misshandlung, die Situation für das Opfer schlimmer machen (vgl. Wißmann 2022). Auch eine Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Behörden wie der Polizei oder dem Jugendamt wird oftmals als nicht zielführend beschrieben und vielfach scheint die Zuständigkeit unklar (ebd.).

Interessanterweise wäre Lausch als von Pia diagnostizierter Psychopath vermutlich Adams beste Möglichkeit auf Hilfe durch eine Lehrperson gewesen, da dieser in der Lage sei, die Gefühle und Emotionen anderer Menschen perfekt zu lesen (HdW ab 00:39:00). Allerdings ist er erst als Lehrer für Adam zuständig, nachdem die Misshandlungen durch Rolands Koma bereits ausbleiben (vgl. Mögliche Timeline).

2.3.e.ii) Polizei

In KdE erfährt der Zuschauer, dass Adam als Kind selbst bei der Polizei angerufen hat, um die Misshandlungen zu melden (01:13:46). Wie der weitere Kontakt zur Polizei und anderen verantwortlichen Stellen verlaufen ist, wissen wir nicht, aber es ist davon auszugehen, dass Roland zur Meldung befragt wurde, da Adam angibt, danach als Strafe verprügelt worden zu sein (01:14:00).

Leider lohnt auch hier ein Blick zu Wißmann, der mehrere Umfragen unter ärztlichem Fachpersonal zusammenträgt, die wiedergeben, dass die Zusammenarbeit mit der Polizei im Fall von Kindesmissbrauch oft nicht das erwünschte Ergebnis hat (vgl. Wißmann 2022).

Es ist also durchaus wahrscheinlich, dass die Meldung durch die Polizei weiterverfolgt wurde und Roland die Bedenken hinsichtlich des Kindesmissbrauchs aus dem Weg räumen konnte. Hinzu kommt, dass der Zuschauer nicht weiß, wann Adam die Polizei verständigt hat; ist der Anruf vor November 2000 erfolgt kann es sein, dass die von Roland angewandten Körperstrafen als rechtmäßiger Teil seiner Erziehung angesehen wurden und für die nachverfolgenden Stellen kein Grund zu weiterem Handeln bestand. Auch danach ist eine solche Einschätzung nicht auszuschließen.

Fazit: Warum wurde Adam nicht geholfen?

Die Kurze Antwort ist: Weil die Gesamtsituation scheiße ist. Moderate Körperstrafen werden noch immer als Teil der Erziehung akzeptiert, Elternrechte in vielen Fällen über das Kindeswohl gestellt und die Mittel fehlen, um Gefahrensituationen zu erkennen und betroffenen Kindern angemessen zu helfen. Selbst wenn KWG-Meldungen erstellt werden, bringen diese nicht immer das gewünschte Ergebnis, vielfach weil Zuständigkeiten nicht geklärt sind und Ressourcen zur adäquaten Hilfe und Unterstützung Betroffener fehlen.

In Adams Fall spiel hinein, dass der Zuschauer nie genau erfährt, wer von den Misshandlungen wusste und wie viel. Roland wird als Adams Vater als klarer Täter inszeniert, seine Motivation bleibt aber bis auf die Vermutung, dass es sich um erzieherische Maßnahmen handelte, uneindeutig.

Was die anderen Personen in Adams sozialem Umfeld angeht, können wir nur Mutmaßungen anstellen. Es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass weder seine Mutter, noch sein Patenonkel nichts von den Misshandlungen wussten. Auch bei Manuela Baron liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass sie mindestens von einer strengen Erziehung Kenntnis hatte. Sollten die Vermutungen zutreffen, wird den Zuschauenden zu keiner Zeit suggeriert, dass sie versucht haben, etwas dagegen zu unternehmen.

Einzig Leo — von dem wir auch wissen, dass er sich eines Großteils der Misshandlungen bewusst war — hat Adam letztlich geholfen. Inwiefern er dies zu früheren Zeitpunkten schon getan hat, oder in welcher Form, ist nicht bekannt. Zuschauende erfahren lediglich, dass er das Gefühl hatte, nicht helfen zu können.

Was jedoch noch schlimmer ist, als die Vermutung, dass Adams Umfeld im generellen Unwissen gelebt hat ist, dass viele der Interpretationen zulassen, dass Adams direktes Umfeld zwar von der Misshandlung wusste, das Ausmaß aber entweder nicht richtig einschätzen konnte, oder die Misshandlungen und Vernachlässigungen als notwendigen Teil seiner Erziehung und Ausbildung durch Roland Schürk betrachtet haben und so keinen Handlungsgrund sahen.
